Customer Reviews:
Eye-opener.......2005-06-09
This book is amazing. I usually watch movies with the action just washing over me, not paying too much attention to details.
After reading this book I actually went back and watched some movies (like "Two Weeks Notice") again and suddenly saw them in a totally different light. Thank you for the eye-opener. In future I will pay more attention to the hidden agenda in "chick-flicks". Also thank you for mentioning my alltime favorite actress, the great Judy Dench. It is nice to know that there are others out there who appreciate class.
Fun, fun book.......2005-06-09
This book is a star. Hugely entertaining, smart, sassy and great fun. A pageturner and an eye-opener.
From a world where a Brazilian can change your life..........2005-06-07
If you've given up wondering how and why George Bush got re-elected during such bad economic and political times, turn your attention to a world where Gwyneth Paltrow says that a Brazilian wax "Changed her life" and junior high girls fellate "hello." This book is nicer than I am, and makes a little sense out of all this. I'm astounded by my own fascination and love of bubbly starlets. And as I prepare for my forties, I do so wish that there were older women on screen whose foreheads moved and they didn't have to laugh through a taught "O"-shaped hole in their face (poor, beloved Farrah Fawcett).
What have we done to ourselves?
Well, read this book for starters. And forget about the PW article above. This review is much more Birkenstock-wearing and hairy-legged than the book is. And girls, you can run but you can't hide; getting older makes feminists of us all. (Cybill Shepherd, etc.)

Good advice and techniques for advanced Sudoko player.......2007-01-25
This book provides lots of discussion, ideas, and techniques for the advanced Sudoku player bored with "difficult" puzzles in the newspapers and wanting to move beyond the simplest advanced techniques such as X-wing and Swordfish. The discussion of techniques differs from the typical approaches you'll find on the web, and is more general. Lots of practice puzzles along the way to help turn theory into useful technique. Also, lots of encouragement for players who rely too much on penciling in.

Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners.......2006-08-05
After a good introductory section the book launches into Sudokus at the beginner, novice, intermediate, and expert levels. I do not advise this book for beginners. My average completion times (although they may be slow compared with many others!) were 26 minutes for the first 5 of the "beginner" level, and 39 minutes for the "expert" level. For "beginner" in other publications my average is about 6 minutes. In my opinion the "beginner" level puzzles are much too difficult and will probably lead to the book receiving little attention from beginners.
Beware of two puzzles.......2006-02-08
Beware of puzzles 43 and 141... they're unsolvable. One clue needs to be added to each. For puzzle 43, add a "9" to row 5, column 5 (very middle of the puzzle). For puzzle 141, add a "6" to row 6, column 5. This will help save your hair from being pulled out.
Sets the standard for Sudoku.......2006-01-27
Teach yourself Sudoku was not only the first Sudoku book I owned but is still the best. The puzzles in this book are true Sudokus, unlike others I have seen which are unsymmetrical.
The first section of the book offers clear and useful advice with helpful diagrams and quick tips to help you progress. There is also a smattering of interesting and amusing quotes throughout.
In all the puzzles are well paced and graded and will certainly keep you occupied this winter.
It was the best of times, it was the 794563281.......2006-01-22
If you find yourself ready to roll up your sleeves and roil the waters of Sudoku this is a fine book to start with. Its compilation of challenging puzzles and accompanying strategy guide offer a great start for anyone looking to take the next sudoku step. Broken up into four seperate skill levels, the jump in challenge isn't dramatic, but it's definitely noticed. Even the "novice" section is challenging enough to side-step any breeze-through puzzles. Quotes spread throughout the pages of the book range from notables to anonymous and it keeps the mood light, especially when you're pulling your hair right before what mystics refer to as the "ah-ha" moment. And to cap it all off it contains a very welcome solutions section for every puzzle.

Book Description
A guidebook for the small investor who wants to invest in single family rental houses. Chapters guide the reader through setting meaningful and realistic goals, locating money for down payments, selecting good properties to buy, getting a loan without doing "creative financing" gyrations, managing tenants with a minimum of time, writing leases and getting good landlord insurance, and eventually doing a tax deferred exchange. Written clearly with the beginner in mind, but including the information an experienced investor needs to learn.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good Book.......2006-11-19
In fact, this a very good book for someone interested in this style of investing (ie. buying a handfull of rental houses for bettter or earlier retirement). Its easy to read and I found several important points not covered in some of the more famous books. You prolly needs to read a few more books before beginning an investment enterprise, but this shold be one of them.
Good, With One Major Problem.......2006-10-10
This is on the overall a good book as the other reviews have testified. There is one major problem, the author talks very little about risk.
She recommends that you get deeply into debt and use that leverage to make money. That's ok and many people have made money that way. Many people have also lost their shirt that well as well. The book would have been much enhanced is she spent a chapter talking about the risks involved with taking on massive amounts of debt, especially for the small investor - the target audience - who likely doesn't have much to lose. She should've included several case studies, some that look those who have successfully used leverage (debt), and looked at some who lost everything. Then she could've analyzed what were the underlying factors and decisions that led to either failure or success.
Instead the author casts debt in an overly positive light, saying almost nothing about the risks involved. This is all well for her, she began to buy several years before the biggest real estate boom in the history of the country. But there have been plenty of real estate markets in the past where investors took on too much debt and lost not only their investment properties, but everything else as well.
Any credible book about investing has a responsibility to spend a healthy amount of time discussing risk. It's like being enthusiastic about a medication but not saying anything about the potential side effects or hazards. Such an approach is bad medicine, and Ms. Thomas' book is bad teaching because she ignores the subject of debt, and for that reason I took off 3 stars.
Beyond that, it's a very good starter book.
A very good book but you will need others.......2006-09-17
This is my 3rd book on real estate investing and I must say that each is totally different, with different ideas and different strategies. I think it's important to keep this in mind because there is not one single book that can tell you everything you need to know.
I like how she talks about goal setting, something I've learned from Tony Robbins and that I feel is really important. I like how she calculates the rate of return. I like her differing point of views. I would have never considered an adjustable rate mortgage before reading this book. Overall I learned a lot, despite having already read 2 other good books.
A few things I didn't like: I would have liked more information on selecting and comparing properties. And especially calculating if I can afford it or not. The information she gives is quite good, but since this is the most important topic I think it deserved even more.
The book is well worth the price and if you're serious about investing I highly recommend it.
A Gem Among Rental House Investing/Small Investor Books.......2006-07-05
In her own conversational style, Suzanne P. Thomas communicates a wealth of information for the small investor in a compact package.
While researching real estate investing and landlording, I read about a dozen books that I carefully selected from the library. Out of the dozen I read and the others I perused, this is one of two that I bought. This book is an invaluable resource, and I've read through the majority of it at least four times.
This book begins by getting you thinking about your long term goals for investing. For example, is your focus on creating cash flow for income, or are you interested in capitalizing on appreciation?
A nifty section of the book is on the subject, "Why Doesn't Everyone Buy Real Estate?" This small section changed the way I thought about real estate investing. After discussing obstacles to investing, Thomas clearly conveys that capitalizing on real estate takes patience. You won't find Thomas trying to fill your head with get-rich-quick schemes or promises of unrealistic fast returns.
One of Thomas' statements is a clincher. Thomas says, "Just remember that there is a difference between investing and speculating. Speculators need to get out before the market tanks, and this can be difficult to time correctly. Investors have a long term plan that can handle ups AND downs."
About the time I read Thomas' book, I still had lingering thoughts about "flipping" properties. I have to admit that "flipping" is enticing. Although people do make money flipping real estate, this method is a gamble. So, unless you have a lot of cash to invest that you can afford to lose, I wouldn't recommend it.
The chapter on "Selecting Properties" was especially helpful. I do not consider myself a "Slum Lord" and want to own properties that my family would be pleased to live in. We just completed work on fixer-upper home in a modest, older neighborhood. The home is now a nice place with some class, and we've enjoyed renting it to another family who fell in love with it.
In Thomas' book, there are excellent chapters about loans (with sharp insights into ARMs), 1031 exchanges, qualifying tenants, etc. Each chapter has multiple tidbits of information.
WHAT THIS BOOK IS NOT: Although this book contains good information about landlording, it is not a nuts and bolts landlording book, nor does it profess to be. You should seek the nuts and bolts from landlording books, from other investors, from a real estate attorney, and also from an experienced investor/teacher (community education programs usually have someone in the area who is an expert and teaches investment and landlording classes).
This book is excellent and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a down-to-earth, information-packed book on this subject. I hope Thomas writes more books on landlording and related subjects.
An expertly instructive guide to becoming a successful small investor in a specialized sector of the real estate industry.......2006-04-10
Rental Houses For The Successful Small Investors by experienced house-investor Suzanne P. Thomas is an expertly instructive guide to becoming a successful small investor in a specialized sector of the real estate industry. Enhanced with an easy-to-use, step-by-step construct replete with practical information on how to predict profitability of individual properties, discover where to get down payments, learn how to select the best properties, understanding exactly how loans really work for investors, selecting the best tenants, creating a comprehensive lease, properly managing property, and an informative exploration of what advantages 1031 tax deferred exchanges might allow an investor, Rental Houses is an excellent reference for all investors. Rental Houses is very strongly recommended for all readers interested in exploring the prospects of profitable investment in rental housing, as well as to those already in the practice of being a home rental landlord.

Book Description
Greek philosophy for kids
“I know that I know nothing.”
With this classic statement, uttered over two thousand years ago, Socrates set the standard for the future of Western philosophy. By day, he soaked up the sun in the Athenian marketplace, where he’d converse for hours on end about the meaning of wisdom, right and wrong, courage, justice, and love. By night, he feasted and danced with friends. He was charming, but not handsome, happy, but not rich. Unfortunately, his method of thinking did not sit well with everyone. In the end, his fellow Athenians punished him with death.
The story of Socrates’ life unfolds through cheerful illustrations and a two-tiered text, one layer quite simple, the other full of juicy additional details about the philosopher’s life and times. The ending assembles a “School of Athens,” showcasing thinkers, from Erasmus to Martin Luther King, Jr., who have been inspired by Socrates’ philosophy.

Since I ordered Wise Guy for my eight-year-old grandson Sam, I asked him to review it. We home-school each other.
1. Would you give Wise Guy 5 stars because it is one of the best books you ever read, or no stars because it's one of the worst, or 1,2, 3, or 4 stars? SAM: 4-1/2 stars. 2. Which did you like more, the pictures or the words? SAM: The words. 3. Will you tell your sisters or your friends to read it? SAM: Yes. I would like my best friend to read it. 4.Do you think you will want to read it again? SAM: Yes. 5. In what way would you like to be like Socrates? SAM pointed to his brain. 6. In what way would you not like to be like Socrates? SAM made a face and said hemlock. 7. Did you like the way the book tells the story of Socrates' life in larger print and tells about him in smaller print? SAM: Yes. 8. Did you like the pictures and descriptions of famous persons Socrates influenced, at the end of the book? SAM: Yes. 9. Did the book make you think you might want to become a philosopher? SAM: Maybe. 10. Would you like to read more books about philosophy and philosophers? SAM: Yes. 11. Do you have any more to say to Amazon customers about this book. SAM: Buy it.
Fundamental Socrates for Children.......2006-03-26
Excellent overview of who Socrates was, his life, and his way of thinking. I have read this to my two sons (5/9) and they both enjoyed it (text and artwork). Socrates is at the foundation of western thinking and philosophy.
Great Classical Homeschool Resource!.......2006-02-20
Homeschoolers will want WISE GUY on their bookshelf. Our family loved it and it was a great introduction to Socrates for our 9 and 12 year old. Younger children will enjoy the great illustrations and gentle story about Socrates while older students, adults included, will learn more historical information about ancient times. Usher and Bramhall combined these elements creatively and made a great family book to re-visit as the family grows. A great find for our homeschool!
Excellent picture book.......2006-01-29
I love this book! Having studied philosophy in college, I wanted to introduce my children to the subject. (Aristotle himself said that all philosophy begins with a child-like sense of wonder.) The author, a philosophy professor, does a marvelous job of presenting not only Socrates' life and times but also his philosophical ideas in a simple, straightforward way. My small children (one a beginning reader) had no trouble at all following the basic storyline, and my husband and I learned a lot we didn't know from the commentary that accompanies each page. Socrates was a rationalist, but what I especially like about this book is that we get to see Socrates' mystical or spiritual side, which is presented in a lighthearted, yet serious way. The best part about this book, however, are the artful illustrations. Some scenes are whimsical (like the picture of Socrates dancing), others touching (especially the pages dealing with Socrates' trial and death). I've looked at this book two or three times since I bought it and I expect it will get many more readings over the years.
Good but thin.......2005-12-08
When I read the review of the book, It sounded great. When it actually arrived and I found it was not an actual "book" book but a large (9x11.25") very thin (40 pages) kids book I felt a bit cheated. (No fault of Amazon. All the info was presented if I'd bothered to read the details.) Still I felt disappointed. Then I read the book. The illustrations are subperb and the text is thought provoking. I'm still sorry there isn't more to it, but I'm very glad I ordered it.

Drawing on creation stories, oral history, archaeological evidence, federal documents, and hundreds of published sources, Josephy takes us on an encyclopedic journey through Native America's past and present. A must have for all households; Also buy DVD's.......2007-02-11
This book is a must have for all U.S. households, along the with the DVD's. It is important for adults and children alike to know the Truth, as harsh as it is. I watched each disc with my two children and they were engrossed with each episode. We have used the book for research for school reports and on the local Native American history for my job. This book is an eye opener for some teachers.
I bought the book and the VHS tapes when they first came out, after watching the show on PBS. After I watched the VHS tapes several times, I borrowed them to my Dad, who has never given them back! I told him to keep them, when I purchased the DVD's.
I have also purchased this book for friends and family who are interested in Native American history. It has been great to see what some of our ancestors were really like and how they were treated by the white men. If you do genealogy, or know that you have Native American ancestors or even closer relatives, you should definitely read this book. I can say that the way my ancestors were treated, angered me a lot. Prepare to feel anger and guilt for what the white men did. But most of all, share your knowledge with someone else, who has the wrong idea about the Native Americans.
North American Indian Research.......2007-01-06
I think this book is very helpful to anyone either curious about North American Indians or doing research. I am using this as a research tool for my art since I am doing a series of paintings of North American Indians from the period of around 1850 through 1910.
History 101.......2005-06-16
This book is a grand overview of the history of the native peoples of North America, from the time of first settlement until their ultimate confrontations with European immigrants. Josephy takes us on a tour of the continent from the Mayan and Aztec civilizations to the Inuits. For each group of people, he describes their major accomplishments and customary ways of life. He then traces what happened to the tribes when Europeans determined to take away their lands or resources.
Although I thought I knew a fair amount about the history of Native Americans, as I read this book, I became more and more aware of the enormity of my ignorance. For example, I always wondered before why there were no Native American cities-but Josephy explains that that there were indeed numerous large cities in North America before the arrival of Europeans, but for some reason, most people have never heard of them. Native American history has been suppressed to the extent that school kids never come to understand Native Americans as having any history at all. They never hear about the role the Native Americans played in the early wars over the sovereignty of the continent, let alone the policies of genocide set in place in the Nineteenth Century. It's time that more of this information gets included in general school curricula.
Eye opening experiance.......2005-05-14
This book opened my eyes to my heritage as a Native American (Hopi/Zuni). Straightforward writing, beautiful illustrations & wonderful pictures. I liked this book because it is a comprehensive study of the First Nations through prehistoric times to the Great Civilizations on to the time of Columbus and the coming of the Europeans. Finally, to the dissemination & destruction of the Native People's religion & culture. This book delves into an often overlooked period of American history- the Native slave trade. For hundreds of years Native peoples were kidnapped and forced into servitude, either sent to European countries or to European owned plantations in the Caribbean. The average Native died within a year after being captured due to harsh cruelty or European disease for which they had no immunity. European diseases wiped out whole tribal populations. I fully recommend that anyone interested in real American history reads this book.
Wonderful overview.......2003-06-25
I love my copy of this book and read it often. It is very informative, sensitive, and beautifully illustrated. You know: this book would make a perfect college graduation or birthday present, because the recipient will dip into it every now and again, enjoyably, for ever.

Chittums predictions are coming true.......2007-03-26
One look at what's happening with our porous southwestern border, the throng of illegals streaming across it, and our ineffectual government's refusal to seal and protect it makes this important analysis a must read for those who know the score concerning the looming national disaster that the evening news refuses to cover.
Very Good Book.......2007-02-26
Chittum talks about phases of Civil War II: 1. Tribalization, or the undermining of the concept of citizenship. 2. The creeping loss of democracy to private, governmental institutions and international bodies. 3. Gradually falling wages. 4. The slow decay of infrastructure in our cities and the abandonment by Americans and their replacement by minorities wedded to welfare and affirmative action. 5. Growing legal and illegal immigration to transform America into a typical Third World country. 6. Massive drive for gun control to cripple military potential from the working class. 7. Cooperation of the mass media to dumb down the population.
Near the end of the book he makes projections that you can see happening right now:
1.Shrinking hourly wage. 2. More immigrants than Americans. 3. Foreigners hold most Federal Debt. 4. Twenty million Third World slums on our borders known as `colonias'. 5. Manufacturing jobs moved out of the USA making it impossible for us to make or sell anything to the world. 6. Republican and Democratic politicians refusing to deal with the immigration crisis. Worse, both parties aid and abet it. 7. Growing power of advocates of Aztlan or the reconquest of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas by Mexico.

I moved cross country because of this book. I spent months doing my own research, trying to refute the claims by this author and couldn't. Multicultural nations are filled with animosity, fear, distrust and ultimately do not survive. Even the liberal Harvard researcher Robert Putnam (author of "Bowling Alone") reluctantly admitted that people "hunker down" in diverse neighborhoods and don't trust either people who look like them and amazingly, people who do look like them. According to Putnam, Los Angeles had the lowest levels of trust of any city, while Chittum stated that Los Angeles would be ground zero for the coming civil war. Putnam was so distressed by his findings that he said "we must create a new us." Only an intellectual could come up with something so foolish.
The best part of the book is that he provides a geographical map of where the new nations are likely to be. He even maps out the white enclave areas in Texas, Georgia etc. and shows you the lack of viability and logistical problems of remaining in these spots.
The checklist will make a believer out of you. Some of these trends were somewhat apparent in 1996, but the vast majority were not. This man either had a crystal ball, or he knows what he's talking about. I gladly paid over $50 for this book, but now you can buy it for much less, so what are you waiting for? I literally have hundreds of books in my personal library, but if I were only allowed to keep one, it would be Civil War II.
A glimpse of the present and the future.......2007-01-30
Great book!! The chapter titled Civil War Checklist is especially disturbing because many things he mentions have already come to pass.
The breakup of America is inevitable. The chaos and bloodshed will make the Balkans and our first civil war look like some sort of game.
Dont buy this book unless you are ready for some startleing revelation's.......2007-01-10
This book written about ten year's ago is unfolding like the daily newspaper.SO many truths that are being shown so many lies being unvealed for people who are ready for a life changeing reality check here it is if this dont get you you motivated nothing will.

Gender And Environment (Routledge Introductions to Environment)
ASIN: 1842771574 |
Book Description
This unique collection of in-depth case studies from Latin America, Asia, Africa, Europe and North America demonstrates the importance of women and gender relations in plant genetic resource management and conservation. It provides a state-of-the-art overview of the concepts, relationships and contexts explaining the relatively hidden gender dimensions of people-plant relations. The contributors come from a rich range of disciplines including ethnobotany, geography, agronomy, anthropology, plant breeding, nutrition and development economics. They demonstrate how crucial women are to plant biodiversity management and conservation at household, village, and community levels; and how gender relations have a strong influence on the ways in which local people understand, manage, and conserve biodiversity.
