Book Description
Patrick S. Halley has had politics in his blood since he was a high school senior. But his life changed with a phone call in 1992 and an offer to work as a campaign advance man, setting up publicity and appearances for Hillary Rodham Clinton, then a presidential candidate's wife, a "secondary" in advance-man parlance. Little did he know that by saying yes, he would embark on a ten-year roller-coaster ride through the American political landscape.
On the Road with Hillary takes readers from President Clinton's successful 1992 presidential bid through two terms in the White House and Hillary Clinton's own victorious run for the Senate in 2000. Through Halley, the reader sees Hillary's multifaceted, sometimes misunderstood persona and often hilarious behind-the-scenes episodes. Filled with tidbits that only an advance man could know, trips to exotic locales across the globe, anecdotes involving who's who in recent Democratic history, and personal encounters with everyone from Fidel Castro to Ronald Reagan to Nelson Mandela, this is the ultimate book for political junkies and all of Hillary's admirers and detractors.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Read, Author clearly a hard core Hillary fan........2004-07-15
I purchased this book so that I could learn what being on the "Advance Staff" was all about. Also I wanted to read something from the perspective of a relatively unknown staffer, one that wasn't being either touted or persecuted by the mainstream media. (Prior to this book I'd never heard of the author, though he apparently was on O'Reillys show.) In general, the book was interesting, though at times I thought it a quite partisan, and often came away with the feeling that the author had more than an employee/employer interest in Mrs. Clinton. (Maybe a bit of a crush on FLOTUS there Mr. Halley??) For that reason, I tended to take some of the book with a grain of salt.
Hillary Rocks!!!.......2002-11-02
Patrick S. Halley's book On the Road with Hillary is a terrific, rollicking, fun read. For Hillary fans, political junkies, or just folks who want to know what really goes on behind the scenes, this is a great book.
I'm not a political junkie but I learned a lot from this book and enjoyed it...Halley is a great story teller, and he tells a story as if you were in his favorite pub in Boston, with him regaling you with tales of a trip just completed, laughing over a glass of his favorite potion, Guinness stout.
Halley is one of the pople that set up appearances for political figures. He prepares successful appearances for Hillary all over the country, from isolated rural college campuses to big city parades and fund raisers. He visits umpteen countries, suffering the hardships of dining in Paris and visiting the poorest places in the world, including Mother Teresa's orphanage in Calcutta. Through it all he never loses the pinch me sense of wonder of a working class kid who makes it good on his native talents but still can't believe his good fortune.
One of the best parts of the book is getting to look at Mrs. Clinton as a real human being. Halley is an unabashed Hillary lover, and he is right up front about that. The thing I liked though is the book does show her as a real flesh and blood human being, and not the one dimensional figure we get through the media at times.
Halley has a real talent for finding trouble and then getting out of it, usually in a daring and funny way. Some of his best stories are about how he wound up buck naked in the lobby of Tokyo's finest hotel, in a losing test of wills with an enraged yak, and in a shoving match with President Clinton while an aghast Mrs. Clinton looked on. But everyone will have a different favorite from this book.
So Hillary bashers, down a quart of maalox and loosen up a bit! But for Hillary lovers, Hillary neutrals, people who like politics, or just people who like fun, this is the book for you.
Excellent and Honest.......2002-09-27
Just finished this book. I found it to be a very honest account of Mrs. Clinton. A must read. I've always found it amusing that all the Clinton "haters" out there buy the books and read them!Interesting.
Another Clinton stooge publishes a book.......2002-09-16
Mr Halley is simply a stooge for the Clintons; he is their response to Drudge they hate so much for having first revealed the Lewinsky story; needless to say, Drudge is as a disgusting a character as anyone trying to balance out his role in the media at the behest of the Clintons who know no limits so far as manipulating public response to their doings is concerned;
nice try, Mr Halley--put on a cap instead of Drudge's stupid hat and make a few bucks along the way...
There is always a possibility that your stalwart support of Senator Clinton (D-New York)will yield a second-tier position in the future Clinton II administration.
Some books on politics aren't just political hype........2002-09-13
I saw an interview with Patrick Halley on the Fox News O'Reilly Factor and Halley convinced me to read this book -- just by being needled by O'Reilly.
He's an undistinguished seeming man -- could be a Secret Service Agent and blend into the crowd.
His voice has an even timbre, and his eyes are steady and true. He wasn't nervous - showed every sign of being an experienced public speaker.
I believed every word he said - and it wasn't really much more than you've read in the cover blurb or the amazon reviews above. It wasn't just that he said he first signed on to be Hillary's front man because she's (quoting here from his own words in that interview - which I scribbled down as he spoke) "really different." It was the way he said it. Matter of fact. Not really trying to convince you that she's "different" -- but explaining why he ditched his whole life to go on the road with a political figure knowing full well what he was getting into. He wouldn't have done that for most any other political figure. But Hillary wasn't like the others -and after one small taste of what it would be like working for Hillary, he wanted to work for her.
Now, personally, I have little use for Hillary. As a writer, both fiction (put my name into the amazon search slot to see a list)and nonfiction (Biblical Tarot and Star Trek Lives! also available here), I have listened to her speeches and watched her delivery. She presents herself as I would present a character of mine that I didn't want anyone to believe.
So I watched this interview with Halley very, very closely. I have never seen anyone else say such positive things about Hillary in such a convincing way. Living in New York, I did see a lot of Hillary - and a lot of coverage on her. What Halley was seeing was very different from what I had seen.
You could read the book a dozen times and still not be convinced the impression Halley says he had gotten of her is true -- after all, anyone can type words onto paper, craft and hone them until they seem sincere. Halley could just be looking for another job -- or he might have been paid to say nice things about Hillary because nobody else wants to. But I was convinced he meant it.
He might be wrong, but I think he believed every word.
When probed about Hillary's response to the eruption of scandal, Halley said, "She's a very strong person (...) she realized it was important to carry on with the Clinton Agenda."
He saw her as committed to Bill and Bill to her.
It didn't sound like a coverup to me.
Asked about how he could guarantee the crowds the press wanted to see at Hillary's appearances, -- did he pay people to show up and hold signs? Halley said that he never paid people to show up and hold signs, but he did pay for the buses.
He went out of his way to make the point that the bussed in crowd was there mostly for the convenience of the press -- so they'd be sure they could get their shot and make their deadlines.
He said that the Press is the prism through which people are viewed, and he seemed to consider that it was his job to give them a clear view of Hillary to pass on to the Nation.
When asked at the end of the interview if she will run for the Presidency, he answered with perfect politician's aplomb that he hopes she will run.
That was the only point where I felt there was some more to be said that he wasn't saying.
Read this book -- if she plans to run as we all expect she does, this book will be the first advance campaign gambit.
People should also read this book if they don't yet know the difference between what a candidate says from the podium and what is really happening. If you don't understand politics as show-business (something I learned about while traveling to collect material for Star Trek Lives!) you really need to read this book.
If you already understand what politics really is, and politicians never fool you, then you don't have to read this book, but you should remember that Halley - who worked with Hillary under the most trying circumstances, thinks she is a steady and strong person.
What would she have done if she were sitting in the Oval Office when the Twin Towers came down?
I think that's the question this book is giving you the material to answer for yourself.
Live Long and Prosper,
Jacqueline Lichtenberg

On the Road with Hillary : A Behind-the-Scenes Look At the Journey From Arkansas to the U.S. Senate
Manufacturer: Penguin Group (USA)
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: 1413214908 |
Product Description
"When Patrick Halley was first asked to act as an advance man for Hillary Clinton in 1992, he had no interest in working for the wife of a governor who might or might not become the Democratic candidate for president. He was persuaded to help out - just once - and ended up on the road with Hillary for the next nine years." On the Road with Hillary is the real behind-the-scenes story of Clinton's campaign stops with her husband, the international trips she made as first lady, and her own campaign for U.S. senator. It is a rollicking journey across America - from small-town factories and schools to the palatial homes of the Manhattan elite and Hollywood celebrities - and across the world - from Mongolia to Pakistan to Ireland. This up-close and personal portrayal explores Hillary Clinton the humanitarian, lawyer, wife, and politician and reveals new insights about Bill and Hillary's intimate relationship.

The most detailed and, in many respects, the finest volume in the VideoHound series of guidebooks, VideoHound's Soundtracks is essential for music lovers. It is a comprehensive reference to movie and television soundtracks as well as to albums made from Broadway and movie musicals. Each entry is accompanied by thoughtful and trenchant commentary, a full list of credits, and the title and performer of each cut on the album. As is customary in the VideoHound series, the recordings are rated from "five bones" to "WOOF!"
VideoHound's Soundtracks also contains indices organized by album title, composer, producer, orchestrator, conductor, performer, and song title. In the back of the book you'll find a compact disc sampler titled "The Best Soundtracks in Show Business!!!" which contains music from recent films such as The Rock, Donnie Brasco, Ransom, and Mother.
Customer Reviews:
A large but overall mediocre and disappointing guide........1998-10-15
I'm a huge fan of the Videohound books as well as movie soundtracks so when I read about this book I was pretty excited. But alas, I found this book to be the least satisfying of all their books. MANY notable and popular soundtracks are not reviewed. And I found the music compiliation section uninteresting. They could have easily filled that space with more movie soundtracks! The "free" cd is ok but unfortunately I had every soundtrack featured, but nonetheless, it was fun to listen to all the songs together. Buyer beware: This can be unsatisfactory if you're used to VH's usual high quality.

Book Description
Tattoos have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially among young people. While tattooing is used as a symbol of personal identity and social communication, there has been little sociological study of the phenomenon. In Tattooed: The Sociogenesis of a Body Art, tattoo enthusiasts share their stories about their bodies and tattooing experiences. Michael Atkinson shows how enthusiasts negotiate and celebrate their 'difference' as it relates to the social stigma attached to body art - how the act of tattooing is as much a response to the stigma as it is a form of personal expression - and how a generation has appropriated tattooing as its own symbol of inclusiveness. Atkinson further demonstrates how the displaying of tattooed bodies to others - techniques of disclosure, justification, and representation - has become a part of the shared experience.
Cultural sensibilities about tattooing are discussed within historical context and in relation to broader trends in body modification, such as cosmetic surgery, dieting, and piercing. The author also employs research from a number of disciplines, as well as contemporary sociological and postmodern theory to analyse the enduring social significance of body art.

Customer Reviews:
A first primer for executive coaching.......2007-08-06
Perhaps these are the world's greatest executive coaches, but I struggle with the suspicion that they are, more precisely, friends and associates of the editors. All but one or two of the contributors are Americans, so that I'm reminded of John Cleese's comment, when asked to compare Britons and Americans, that "when we Brits have a World Championship, we invite teams from other countries." Perhaps there are no excellent executive coaches from outside the United States. More likely, "world's greatest" was the publisher's idea.
But marketing hyperbole aside, this is a nice volume on an important and potentially lucrative topic. Executive coaching is definitely hot in the corporate world; a recent Harvard Business Review article (Sherman & Freas, 2004) puts estimated annual spending on executive coaching in the U.S. alone at $1 billion. Those who perform executive coaching include consultants and practitioners of various educational backgrounds, retired executives looking to share their career experience, a bevy of corporate training professionals looking to expand their talents past the classroom, and an assortment of others. It is my "unbiased" opinion that psychologists make the most effective executive coaches. Few non-psychologists have training in human dynamics, personality, learning, motivation, group cohesion, assessment, counseling skills, and other proficiencies necessary to fully effect insight and behavior change in organizational leaders. In another excellent HBR article, Berglas (2002), a psychotherapist, warned that untrained executive coaches have the potential for causing a great deal of damage to individuals and their companies by failing to recognize, or blatantly ignoring, personality disorders or even severe psychopathology that may exist in some they coach. Berglas recommended that, at the very least, executives designated for coaching receive a thorough psychological evaluation before coaching begins. While some business experience in a coach is also nice, I, as one who has both formal graduate training in business and experience working as an employee of two Fortune 100 companies, don't find it the sine qua non that non-psychologist coaches would have us and their potential clients believe.
In my view, one of the major shortcomings of this book is that only 1 of the 30 contributors has (or admits to having!) graduate training in psychology. Had the editors included excellent and well-known executive coaches who are also psychologists, rather than professionals described at the end of each chapter as "a world authority," "a frequent speaker," or (my favorite) "co-author of the most successful organizational behavior textbook of all time," their topic would have been better served.
As it is, the book is worth getting if you are thinking of going into executive coaching. The brief chapter by Edgar Schein (Chapter 2) is in my opinion worth the cost of the book. Schein argues that a distinction must be made between when a client defines the (coaching) situation as "one in which he or she wants individual help to work on a personal issue" and when "a manager asks someone to take on a coaching role to work with an individual to improve job performance or to overcome some developmental deficiencies" (p. 17). In the former instance, "the resulting process can be likened to counseling or therapy," whereas the latter is more analogous to "indoctrination or coercive persuasion" (p. 17). "If an organization `imposes' a coach and a predetermined direction of learning," Schein reminds us, "then by definition we are dealing with indoctrination, not coaching" (p. 18). Schein, a psychologist, states unequivocally the importance of this demarcation. I fear that many non-psychologist coaches would not understand the difference or would not be bothered by it.
Several chapters stand out as highlights. I have mentioned Schein's and would add the chapter by R. Roosevelt Thomas, Jr. (Chapter 25). Thomas provides a well laid out discussion of the dynamics of effective coaching relationships in general and also offers insights on "coaching in the context of teams as opposed to individual efforts" (p. 229). Brian Tracy (Chapter 12) constructs a how-to for retired executives considering coaching as a second career. Finally, the case studies in Part Four (Applications) are clarifying and enlightening and add a great deal to the book.
Besides original work, several of the chapters are a repackaging of previously published material, such as Paul Hersey and Roger Chevalier's chapter on "Situational Leadership and Executive Coaching" (Chapter 3) and James Kouzes and Barry Posner's chapter "When Leaders Are Coaches" (Chapter 16), which is an excerpt from their 2003 book. Marshall Goldsmith (one of the editors) contributes five chapters. Personally, I view these as resume-building for the publish-or-perish crowd, but if a reader buys the book, these can be considered a bonus.
Overall, the book serves as a fine primer for those thinking of going into executive coaching, and for those of us already there, it never hurts to benchmark against the "world's greatest."
*This is a condensed version of my review of the book in PsycCRITIQUES--Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 52 (17), 2007.
Powerful tool.......2006-11-20
As it states in the foreword by Beverly L. Kaye this book "is the collective thinking of the very best thought leaders in executive coaching". Beverly is absolutely right. If your in the business as an executive coach you will find the tools of the trade in this book. Marshall Goldsmith is one of the editors of this book, so you know you won't get disappointed. Seasoned coaches will be able to learn about subjects like E-coaching, coaching and culture and situational leadership to name a few. But also the novices in executive coaching will learn a lot from the experts. Not only about being a top coach but also tips and tricks on how to set up a thriving practice. The book also addresses the transition from line manager to executive coach which I haven't read before. I can highly recommend this book to both seasoned and fresh executives coaches and those who are thinking about becoming one. Good reading!
practical, insightful, informative.......2005-12-12
Coaching for Leadership is a valuable collection of essays from some of the most experienced management educators. The book provides research, methods and application stories from different perspectives on leadership coaching, development and effectiveness. The book has depth and is very useful.

Book Description
"An intensely interesting book." --Spectator Scipio Africanus (236183 b.c.) was one of the most exciting and dynamic leaders in history. As commander, he never lost a battle. Yet it is his adversary, Hannibal, who has lived on in public memory.
As B.H. Liddell Hart writes, "Scipio's battles are richer in stratagems and ruses--many still feasible today--than those of any other commander in history." Any military enthusiast or historian will find this to be an absorbing, gripping portrait.

A Great General Gets His Due.......2006-10-31
We've all heard of Hannibal and of the man who finally defeated the invader of Rome (on his own turf). But who does history remember? It certainly isn't the victorious general who *NEVER* lost a battle. While Hannibal might not have lost a battle until Zama, he simply wasn't able to finish the Romans off. This was simply due to the fact he wasn't equal to Scipio when it came to siege warfare. The author finally gives Scipio a book worthy to his name. What struck me the most about Scipio was the way he was treated by politicians back in Rome. One would think that the Senate would have done everything possible to ensure that Scipio was victorious and save Rome. However petty rivalries and jealousy were yet other obstacles to be overcome. History repeating itself. The man himself was not only a brilliant general but a very humble man who always put the republic needs above his own. Even though in the end he died in exile, on charges of bribery bought about by his enemies. Rome later cleared his name but the man who saved them from Hannibal, brought Spain, Carthage, Numidia, Sicily and Greece into the empire was treated no better than a common thief. History does indeed repeat itself.
Innovative Commander........2006-04-09
First, the authors initial premise that the victor does not always get the credit is sadly true. Which dispells many myths revisionists have been spewing for decades. Aspiring leaders could learn much from this and the authors other books. Here he has created a great story outlining the exploits of one of the worlds most underated generals. Dare I say hardly known? Chapters 10 and 11 is where the true nature of the subject comes to life. In three dynamic years he crushed Carthaginian Spain, then launched his daring attack on Carthage. He details how Scipio's depth of thinking was far beyond most one-dimensional doctrines of his day. Without him Rome and the European Civilization that we so often take for granted, may have ended as part of a huge North African Empire. We owe the subject and the author a debt of gratitude.
Excellent and Interest premise for book.......2005-09-29
The author starts off with an interesting premise - that the victor doesn't always get the credit due his achievements. He mentions Hannibal's fame over his superior on the battlefield - Scipio. Other examples are Wellington over Napoleon and Grant over Lee.
A very interesting biography overall with a concentration on his wartime accomplishments, this book is a good read for those interested in military history and the politic intrigue that plague successful military leaders. Recommended reading!
Great work.......2005-02-25
I do not give 5 star ratings on much of anything that I review, this was an exception. I had barely heard of this great general before and now I know much more about him. That is what a historical book should do, but this one was also a joy to read and went too fast. For every statement about Scipio there is explination and justification. I'm sure he was a much more complicated man than even this book can go into, more's the pity, but a great general he was....possibly the greatest.
A must buy to the military reader and should be required reading for not only historians, and soldiers, but heads of state as well.
Greater Than Napoleon!.......2004-09-04
"So general is the recognition of Hannibal's genius in this battle art that he is commonly termed the supreme tactician of history. Yet in ruse and strategem the record of Scipio's battles is even richer (p.253)."
Author Basil H. Liddell Hart has created a wonderful story outlining the history and exploits of possibly the greatest general of any military force, Scipio Africanus.
Publius Cornelius Scipio was born in Rome in 235 B.C.; his first recorded taste of warfare was at the battle of the Ticinus, where Hannibal first clashed with the Romans after his famous passage through the Alps with his elephants, and in which Scipio's father was the commander. Here the 17 year old Scipio saved his father's life, and only two years later, the year of the Romans' disastrous defeat at Cannae, he was already the equivalent of a Colonel. In 210 B.C. the dynamic and charasmatic young Scipio was put in supreme command; Ticinus and Cannae were the only scenes of failure Scipio witnessed, for in command he never lost a battle. In three years he destroyed Carthaginian power in Spain and on his return to Italy pressed for a direct attack on Carthage. Made consul, he took his forces to Africa where he destroyed the forces of Carthage's great ally, Syphax. Two years later he clashed with Hannibal himself, annihilating his army in the decisive battle of Zama. For his triumph of arms, which finally broke Carthaginian power, he was awarded the title of "Africanus."
At 280 pages, this text is very entertaining and easy to read and understand. Without footnotes and only a short bibliography, the book is still a watershed of ancient military insight from the military historian master himself, B.H. Liddell Hart. I rate this text as five stars! Superb!

A brilliant review of the general who bested Hannibal.......1999-09-20
I was pleased to see that the man who bested Hannibal and established the might of the Roman military for centuries to come receive his due recongition. Lidell-Hart's book on Scipio Africanus reads more like an action\adventure novel. It will keep you wanting to read more while at the same time presenting a very accurate and modern portrayal of the great Roman general. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes a study in history, military strategy, or the classics as it will bring into balance the exploits of Hannibal and his eventual defeat at the hands of Scipio Africanus.

A Century of War - oustanding analysis and great writing!.......2007-07-03
This is a must read book for anyone who is interested in learning the truth behind the headlines relating to many recent events. From the Falklands War to the current war in Iraq, this book analysis the economic factors that lead to - or in some way influenced - some of the major global events in modern history.
It explores in detail the relationships, theories and possible motives behind them without ever descending into crazy 'conspiracy' theories.
I've bought this book for a number of people and urge anyone who has an interest in the world around them to read it.
not worth the time.......2007-06-30
I find it odd that some of the reviews here praise the book for being well-documented, because in the 60 or so pages I've read so far it has no documentation or support whatsoever for some pretty wild claims. I had high hopes when I picked this up at the library because it is an interesting topic, but now I find it impossible to take it seriously.
A Century Of War: Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Order.......2007-06-08
This book should be a "Must Read" for everyone. The information in this book is all public information that is available for all to see, but unfortunately most people want to keep their heads in the sand, or up their you know where. The author has done a wonderful job with his research and ability to make this book an easy read, and once one starts reading it, you will not want to put it down. Understanding this book will allow anyone to really see behind the headlines and at least take comfort in knowing that they know what is really taking place in the world today, and that politics is just acting at its BEST! You will no longer be afraid of all the BS that the politicans and wolrd leaders spew from the their pie holes, full well knowing that it is a big game, and all of the world is a stage! Enjoy life, and live it too your fullest, and there are things that one can not control.
not worthy of buying.......2007-06-05
The author of this book clearly wants to take advantage of oil being the hot issue of today's world. Yet he fails to present the reader with really anything more than conspiracy theories. Oil is definitely an important and strategic resource but considering it the only reason of competition or conflict is not even symplistic, it's false. It's easy to say that the bad things were done by the selfish tycoons controling the financial world, as any other conspiracy theory it can not be proved wrong (how do you prove that the governement of USA is not run by aliens?), the important thing is that author does not give any evidence supporting his idea, also he does not use any academical sources and most of the work are his own thoughts about the history. Quite often when he is refering to seome events his is telling the reader only half of the story, omitting information that is not comfortable with his point of view. Nevertheless the book can be useful for showing another point of view concerning world politics. The author of this review is student of international relations and security and strategics studies.
The British and Americans are the devil's hands.......2007-04-18
After reading this expose of the British and American subjugation or the world's people and conscious impaling of that world on the horns of war, I am shocked and ashamed of my heritage. This book is well written and connects all the dots behind the sinister James Bond money culture that has harmed so many.

Don't drink the water. Don't swim in it, fish in it, or even bathe in it. Rodney Barker's book, And the Waters Turned to Blood details the latest plague to visit our shores: Pfiesteria piscicida, the "cell from hell," an aquatic microorganism that causes sufferers to exhibit symptoms similar to Alzheimers or multiple sclerosis. As it follows the fortunes of Dr. JoAnn Burkholder, one of the first scientists to recognize the danger of Pfiesteria, Barker's book reads like a cross between science fiction and conspiracy theory: Dr. Burkholder discovers that excessive pollution in the rivers and coastal waters of the Southeastern United States causes a deadly microorganism to breed like crazy; state and federal government attempts to suppress the report.
An investigative reporter by training, Mr. Barker writes And the Waters Turned to Blood like a thriller, revealing pieces of the puzzle judiciously as he builds tension. Unlike in a literary thriller, however, there is no tidy ending to this story. Readers will be left with the disturbing knowledge that fish are still dying, fishermen are still getting sick, and the potential for disaster in this latest scourge is still unmeasured.

Review of Mr. Rush's AP Environmental Science Class.......2007-01-02
This dramatic account of this toxic dinoflaggellate is factual and descriptive. The beginning is well-paced and keeps the reader's attention. However, toward the middle of the book the plot becomes repetitive and more politically based. It was frustrating for the reader to read all the processes of funding and the failures. The book informs the public of a topic that is kept secret by the government. The author researched the data well and presented the information in an interesting way including a cliff-hanger to end each chapter. Overall, this book is recommended for an interesting read into the danger that lurks the coastal waters of North Carolina.
Are you reading This??? im only 11 why does it matter what i think.......2006-02-28
This book was overall a good read, but the widespread exaggeration of the effects of the dinoflagellate became quite repetitive. I was impressed that the book was able to tie politics and environmental policies together. At times, the plot was mildly interesting when compared to other environmental books. The government policies, though, became very confusing at times and the romantic aspect of Dr. Joanne Burkholder's life was not sufficiently explained.
"And the Waters Turned Mediocre...".......2006-02-28
The sheer mediocrity of this novel is stunning. It seems to be split into two main parts. The first half of the book is about the actual investigating of the organism and is quite compelling. However, the second half of the book is about a poorly covered up conspiracy theory and is very repetetive. This is dry and is pretty boring. Therefore, the two halves balance each other out to make the novel mediocre. This book is very good, though, in showing the life and career of a scientist, so would be great for an aspiring scientist. It also reveals the state of the waters in North Carolina, a concern to any of the state's citizens.
Awesome Book for the Lay Scientist!.......2005-12-16
Picked this book up while at the pubic library with my family. The except about an "ancient life form" peaked my interest and I had to borrow it. It reads like a very practical novel with a roller coaster ride of excitement about Dr. Burkholder's discovery of this toxic ameoba. I was truly fascinated and couldn't put the book down. The science is broken down so that a lay person can grasp it and understand the importance of JoAnn's findings. Her trials and tribulations with back stabbing colleagues, NC bureacrats, and the dinoflagelate itelf are very interesting. Would highly recommend this book to anyone.
A True Life Horror Story!.......2005-10-10
I live in North Carolina and this is very scary. People are not being told about this very real danger that can do real damage to a persons health just from going in the water.
The fact that I still haven't heard anything about this in the news just makes it worse.
This is scary but the fact that our goverment keeps this type of information from us is even worse.
When you come to N.C., remember there is a monster in the water and it is as bad or worse then the shark in Jaws. Maybe it's time for the movie version. At least an update on the subject.
