Boone Pickens is a paean to American opportunity and a tribute to competitive grit, the entrepreneurial spirit, and just plain courage to follow one's convictions.
Customer Reviews:
Before Barbarians at the Gate, T. Boone Pickens was creating the game and paving the way. .......2006-05-22
This is a great story about how a regular guy from Texas left a large company and the corporate America safety net behind and started his own company, which grew from a few thousand dollars that he started with in 1955 to a billion dollar company decades later. Boone shares the structure of his 1st company which he started with basically no money; for anyone wanting to start there own company this information is priceless. It went like this:
Two partners put up $2,500 and he signed a note for his $2,500. The two partners established a $100,000 line of credit for the new company and Boone would have to have them off the note within 5 years or he would loose control of the company. He was President of the company and ran the day to day operations.
That's it, that simple, years later he's bidding for some of the largest oil companies in the world.
Some great quotes:
"It was up to me to find investors. Asking people for money is the most essential skill for a young dealmaker"
"Undercapitalization affects 90% of the new businesses in America"
"I had to adjust my dreams to fit reality-or could I somehow change reality to match my dreams?"
"Issuing stock for capital is the most fundamental service Wall Street provides. This classic stock market function has given rise to the great Wall Street firms-and for that matter, to America's industrial might. Entrepreneurs need more capital than banks are willing to lend..."
Boone told his attorneys he was going to stop them every time he did not understand something, and his attorney said, "You're paying us by the hour...this could get expensive." Boone replies, "It'll be a lot more expensive if I don't understand it now."

In this lively cultural history, Doherty demonstrates that wartime Hollywood was not a rigidly controlled propaganda machine, as is often assumed, but an ad-hoc collaborative effort between the government and film industry.

Book Description
Everybody Loves Raymond is the most consistently funny program on television today -- and also one of the most widely watched and hihgly praised shows of all time. Now, Ray Romano and show creator Phil Rosenthal have made an official companion to the series. This insider's look at Raymond's world features a lively introduction by Ray and Phil, where they tell the stories of how they met, how Raymond came to be, and how the first episode was made. The next eight chapters follow the show season by season, with candid photography by Tom Caltabiano, one of the show's writers, who has informally documented the cast and crew from day one. Accompanying the photos is hilarious running commentary from Ray and Phil, as they describe memorable moments, fun facts, and tales from behind the scenes. Along the way, interviews with the cast reveal humorous and insightful anecdotes from Patricia Heaton, Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle, Brad Garrett, and Monica Horan. And the conversation with the show's award-winning writers show how their personal family dramas provide inspiration for the on-screen stories.

PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-29
I just got this book last week and I was amazed at how many pictures of the show were in there and they even put how they make an episode, now I know It's kind of weird a kid watching elr but everytime i watch the show I crack up, I have seen ATon of episodes and I also own seasons 5&6 on dvd.if you are addicted to everybody loves raymond like me and watch the show everytime It's on than this is definintly 1,000,000% the book for you there Is only on con about the book and here It is.
CON:the book only covers seasons 1-7 and a tiny bit of 8.
terrific book, but does not cover the entire series.......2006-04-25
"Everybody Loves Raymond: Our Family Album" is an ideal companion for the classic sitcom that ran for 9 successful years and continues to be loved through daily reruns.
Written by Ray Romano and series creator Phil Rosenthal, this book contains extensive information about the show, the cast and crew, and the individual episodes. It really is the perfect thing for fans who can't get enough of the show and want something a little more. This book includes an interview from everyone in the main cast (as well as some crew members), they talk a little bit about the Sweeten kids (who, of course, played Ray and Debra's three children on the show), and hundreds of color photos fill every page (both stills from the actual episodes and candid behind-the-scenes pictures). There are highlighted sections for some of the most popular episodes from each season, which are accompanied by photos and lighthearted comments from Romano and Rosenthal. There are even pictures and information about some of the cast and crew's real-life family members, which die-hard fans will love to see. Then, at the end, there is a complete episode guide for the first 7 1/2 seasons, which lists a brief synopsis and a "memorable moment" from each episode.
The only problem with this book is that, as I mentioned above, it only covers Seasons 1-7 and half of Season 8. I personally don't understand why they didn't at least wait until the entire Season 8 wrapped up before publishing this. Hopefully, though, they will come out with a revised edition that goes all the way through Season 9. Despite that, however, this is still a very valuable book to buy if you are an avid fan of "Raymond." It offers a lot of insight from everyone involved with the show, and it is more than just a short book with some pictures. It's very precise and informative, and you really get a feeling of what a special group of people worked together for those 9 years. It is sad that they could not continue the series for at least one more season, but they certainly went out on top and have deserved every bit of the credit they have received. "The sitcom of our times," it is indeed!
A Great Show and a Great Book.......2004-09-15
Everybody Loves Raymond has to be the one of the funniest comedies on TV today. It has been playing since 1996 and is still fresh and funny in it's brand new episodes.
The cast includes:
-Ray Romano as Ray Barone, the overall star of the show. He has a house, a job as a sports writer for Newsday, a wife Debra (Patricia Heaton), and three children- two twin boys (Jeffrey and Michael) and a girl (Ally). Ray's ignorance is quite funny!
-Patricia Heaton as Ray's wife, Debra Barone. she is much more intelligent than him and is always tolerating Ray's family. She's the only "normal one" of the bunch!
-Brad Garrett as Ray's older brother, Robert Barone. Robert is always insanely jealous of his younger brother and how "lucky" he is for living Robert's dream of having a house and a family. Robert, for a time, lives with his and Ray's parents, but eventually moves out and gets his own apartment. Robert is always visiting Ray's home and is also always craving attention from his mother, Marie, since Raymond is undoubtedly her favorite child.
-Doris Roberts as Marie, Ray's mother. Marie lives across the street with Ray's father (Frank) and is an unbelievable cook. She is not particularly fond of Debra, and always finds some flaw with anything Debra is doing or cooking. She loves to make fun of Debra's housework and cooking. She is constantly made fun of by her husband, Frank, who obviously cannot stand her even though they have been married for 45 years. She undoubtedly favors Raymond over Robert, and even openly admits it a few times, such as in one of my favorite quotes: "I knew something was wrong with that meatloaf, I should have thrown it out or given it to Robbie." However, despite her unfriendly sides, she loves her family truly and always attempts to act out of love (though it doesn't always appear that way).
-And finally, Peter Boyle as Ray's father, Frank. Frank is a truly disgusting man who doesn't show love well and totally lacks taste or class in public. According to Ray, he once "peed in the yard" and "threw his shoe at a flamingo to protect his sandwich". Frank's comments to Marie are hilarious (as are Marie's comments to Debra). In one Thanksgiving episode, Frank admits that he truly loves Marie, which is obviously why their relationship has lasted 45 years. Frank thoroughly enjoys all types of food and cooking and also watching TV with his pants unbuckled.
So, there you have it. ELR is truly a great show. And while the upcoming season ('04-'05) will be it's last, this book is the perfect companion to the show, including lots of show information and pictures. If you love ELR, you should get this book.

Highly Recommended !.......2005-03-11
Investment firms confront a world of change. Yet many of them have managerial cultures that are ill suited for that confrontation. Author Jim Ware, writing with Beth Michaels and Dale Primer, exposes 10 myths of investment firm management, and shows managers what it takes to build a strong, successful management culture. The authors seem generous and humble, drawing examples from and crediting the work of numerous management authorities. The book does not break new ground, but rather it summarizes, compiles and restates what has been said elsewhere. The authors' approach is frank, straightforward and anecdotal. Their focus on the book's target market - investment firm managers - is tight and unvarying. Only in the last chapter do they stray from that focus, restating a number of criteria that investors might use to evaluate stocks on the basis of corporate culture. One suspects that the authors might have included this chapter at the urging of an editor eager to expand, if only incrementally, the readership for the book. If so, we believe the editor should have been content with how precisely the book serves its intended audience.
Unique Guide to Gauging Asset Managers' Culture.......2004-09-10
Management theorist Peter Drucker famously said: "What gets measured, gets done." Busy executives know this is true. So they have little time for management how-to books that repackage upbeat platitudes about excellence. But asset management executives should make time for Investment Leadership. It is refreshing on two counts. First, it's a management book for and about asset managers. Second, it tries to get its quantifying arms around leadership and culture. It's partly successful on this second count, and that's why it's worth a look.
The authors start with the premise that most investment professionals have no interest in managing people. (We'd point to the example of bond guru Bill Gross, who admits as such in RunningMoney's July 22 profile of PIMCO). That's why the book urges firms to find people with business and organization talent to lead.
And leading is different than just managing...

Must Read For Investment Professionals!.......2004-01-28
A fascinating insight into the differences in values, culture and leadership between good (or "stagnant") firms and great ones. Jim and his team have a wealth of experiences and facts to draw on to support their thesis.
I would consider this almost a manual for individuals looking to lead their firms down the road into becoming a great investment organization. It also contains practical insight into how values, culture and leadership are also essential qualitative research elements for consultants and analysts.
A Great Read.......2003-11-04
Investment Leadership explores why some investment organizations produce above average long-term results for clients while others don't. Jim Ware and his team discovered that the best ones have key common characteristics. Ware illustrates how an investment firm's culture influences creativity and success.
This is an engaging book and I believe every investment professional would benefit from reading it. Clients will learn important characteristics to look for when hiring an investment advisor or investing in mutual funds.
Book Description
Benjamin Rush Patriot and Physician Alyn Brodsky The only full biography of Benjamin Rush, an extraordinary 'founding father' and America's first eminent physician hile Benjamin Rush appears often and meaningfully in biographies about John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, this legendary man is presented as little more than an historical footnote. Yet, he was a propelling force in what culminated in the Declaration of Independence, to which he was a co-signer. Rush was an early agitator for colonial rights, a member of the First Continental Congress, and Sur-geon General of the Continental Army during the early phase of the American Revolution. Even if he had not played a major role in our country's creation, Rush would have left his mark in history as a great physician and a foremost social reformer in such areas as medical teaching, treatment of the mentally ill, prevention of yellow fever, and much more. For readers of well-written biographies, Brodsky has illuminated the life of one of America's great and forgotten revolutionaries. 'A fitting memorial: solid, well-researched, and full of ably reconstructed plot turns, worthy of a place alongside Robert Caro's The Power Broker on the long shelf of books devoted to New York politics.' -Kirkus Reviews on The Great Mayor ALYN BRODSKY is a university trained historian and the author of The Great Mayor and Grover Cleveland. He currently lives and works in Florida. Biography 0-312-30911-2 $35.00 $51.95 Canadian 61/8" x 91/4" / 448 pages Truman Talley Books June
Customer Reviews:
Not one of my favorite biographies.......2006-11-10
In addition to a number of factual errors, e.g., that General George Clinton had been a governor of N.Y. in pre-Revolutionary times when it was Clinton's father who had served as governor, and the occasional disparagement of Benedict Arnold as a military commander, the picture which this biography paints of its subject is much too flattering. Rush was not a very pleasing personality nor was he particularly influential in any positive sense as a "founder". Moreover, many details of his life have been omitted. For example, there is no mention of the relationship between Rush and Paine or what became of the son that was institutionalized. Rush's medical practice, in light of the general ignorance of the subject at the time Rush was practicing, does not warrant the extensive treatment which the author gives it. I wrote to the publisher on these subjects and pointed out a number of editorial errata but received no reply.
Please read this, the book was very poorly done.......2005-10-14
I feel bad saying this, but I was severely disappointed with this book. As a physician and early American history buff I was really looking forward to learning more about Benjamin Rush.
In general it seems that the author, despite putting out what appears to be a finished, presentable biography, never really dug into source materials to find out who Benjamin Rush was and why he was important. Repeatedly, we hear of Rush's fame and accomplishments and influence, but the details are missing.
We hear what a great doctor Rush was, considered the preeminent physician of his times, according to the author, but all the author writes about is how Rush tortured his patients with medical treatments we now know are harmful, such as bloodletting, giving cathartics, etc. Rush is known as the "Father of American Psychiatry", his book on psychiatry was bible for many many years, and his observations on mental illness were in many ways way way ahead of his times...yet not a word of this is mentioned except in the last ten pages of this 365 page book. This subject desperately needed to explained. This is why he is important for heaven's sake.
Furthermore, I think it would have been fascinating to have gotten a better feel for what bloodletting and giving cathartics was about, we needed some good old source material, firsthand observations and then-current thoughts, as well as an expose of the tools employed, etc. Rush, it is clear, considered himself first and foremost and physician. He dedicated his life to the practice of medicine, he was considered a top academic lecturer. We are told all the top American physicians for the next half century were either disciples of Rush or disciples of his students.....but we don't really get a feeling for why.
His political contributions and inolvement were similarly neglected. Although he wasn't the political calibre of Hamilton or Jefferson, he was definitely a major player. Much of the earlier portion of the biography seemed to focus on explaining the political events occurring around Rush during the fight for independence. The focus should have been Rush. There's a lot of negativity surrounding Rush early on in the book, but how he seems to know all the important figures in the Revolution and why they respect him is not explained.
There also weren't any pictures or illustrations. I could go on. On the bright side, at least the book reads well. If you want to learn more about Rush, you should probably choose another book. Sorry.
Benjamin Rush and the Revolution.......2005-08-22
Benjamin Rush: Patriot and Physician draws a fascinating picture of one of the United States "Founding Fathers" and "Founding Physicians". Although from humble background, Dr. Rush was able to get the best possible medical education in the world and practiced in Philadelphia for the majority of his adult life. In addition to teaching at the new Medical College in Philadelphia and thus training a whole generation of physicians, he actively participated in the deliberations of the First and Second Continental Congresses and signed the Declaration of Independence. He was a tireless writer, contributing articles on the need of independence from England and the structure of the new government. His contributions were in his own name, but often under another name, in part because of the strength of his beliefs (religious, medical, and political). Rush was a prolific correspondent and he played a crucial part in the reconciliation of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson after their retirements from active politics. Alyn Brodsky presents a sympathetic, but critical, appraisal of a key figure in the emergence of the United States. Further, the history of the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War is wonderfully told through the eyes of one who participated in the Revolution first hand.
Physician and Patriot.......2005-08-12
Modern day Constitutionalists, in their passion to defend this document against ill-conceived modern-day dilutions, sometimes make the mistake of viewing the Founding Fathers of the United States as a pantheon. They were heroes, to be sure, but they had feet of clay and sharp disagreements. Some of the issues for which a compromise was found in the Constitution are worth revisiting today.
Alyn Brodsky has done a first-rate job of portraying this complex individual---Benjamin Rush, a curious combination of man of peace and man of war. He was one of the firiest firebrands in the pre-Revolutionary War days (his prolific pamphleteering helped to persuade those who had been obedient servants of the monarch, bringing to critical mass those who considered themselves defenders of the God-given right to liberty.) On the other hand, his humanitarian side is demonstrated in his pioneering work in the abolition of slavery, his visions for publicly funded schools (at which girls would study the same acedemic subjects as boys), his selfless work among the poor afflicted with Yellow Fever Plague in Philadelphia, his compassionate treatment of mentally ill patients, and due to his insight into the link between criminality and mental illness, his outspoken championing of prisonhouses as centers of reform rather than humiliation.
Particularly moving was the revelation, through letters Benjamin Rush had written to both men, of the antagonistic rift that developed between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in the years after the War. It pained Benjamin Rush, who worked hard to reconcile these close friends. A testament to his success at doing so, and to the character of Benjamin Rush himself, is found in a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to John Adams when Benjamin Rush died in 1813: "...a better man than Rush could not have left us, more benevolent, more learned, of finer genius, or more honest." Adams reply to Jefferson: "I know of no character, living or dead, who has done more real good in America."
Lesser known Signer of Declaration Given his Due.......2004-06-07
Brodsky has done a brilliant job of telling Rush's story in an honest, yet sympathetic way. He weaves the great characters of our young nation into the larger context of a world in the midst of political and economic turmoil.

Throughout the medieval era, the Holy Land was a fiercely contested battlefield, fought over by huge Muslim and Christian armies, by zealots and assassins. The Third Crusade, spanning five years at the end of the 12th century, was, writes James Reston Jr. in this absorbing account, "Holy War at its most virulent," overseen by two great leaders, the Kurdish sultan Salah ad-Din, or Saladin, and the English king Richard, forevermore known as Lionheart.
Writing with a keen sense of historical detail and drama, Reston traces the complex path by which Saladin and Richard came to face each other on the field of battle. The Crusades, he observes, began "as a measure to redirect the energies of warring European barons from their bloody, local disputes into a 'noble' quest to reclaim the Holy Land from the 'infidel'." Of the five Crusades over 200 years, only the first was successful, to the extent that the Christian armies were able to conquer their objective of Jerusalem. The Third Crusade, as Reston ably shows, was complicated by fierce rivalries among the Christian leaders, by a chain of military disasters that led to the destruction of an invading German army and its emperor, and by the dedication of an opposing Islamic army that shared both a goal and a language.
Saladin, Reston writes, was a brilliant leader and a merciful victor, but capable of costly errors; Richard was extraordinarily skilled at combat, but his lack of resolve cost him many battles, and, ultimately, Jerusalem. Richard returned to Europe, Saladin to Damascus. Neither leader has long to live, and the peace they made would soon be broken. James Reston's splendid book does them both honor while examining a conflict that has never really ended. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Warriors of God is the rich and engaging account of the Third Crusade (1187-1192), a conflict that would shape world history for centuries and which can still be felt in the Middle East and throughout the world today. Acclaimed writer James Reston, Jr., offers a gripping narrative of the epic battle that left Jerusalem in Muslim hands until the twentieth century, bringing an objective perspective to the gallantry, greed, and religious fervor that fueled the bloody clash between Christians and Muslims.
As he recounts this rousing story, Reston brings to life the two legendary figures who led their armies against each other. He offers compelling portraits of Saladin, the wise and highly cultured leader who created a united empire, and Richard the Lionheart, the romantic personification of chivalry who emerges here in his full complexity and contradictions. From its riveting scenes of blood-soaked battles to its pageant of fascinating, larger-than-life characters,
Warriors of God is essential history, history that helps us understand today's world.

When the facts become questionable........2007-10-09
I got a hold of this book to do some research for a story on Robin Hood that I am going to be writing to get some background information on the Third Crusades and on Richard himself. I thought this book was good until I got to the paragraph that concerned Robin Hood. If you've done your homework about Robin Hood, you would know that Robin Hood was described as a yeoman, not a disposed nobleman, and if you do your homework, most researchers on Robin Hood like to point out that the king mentioned in the Robin Hood tales is "our comely King Edward" with no defining number. That alone put the rest of the information in the book in question, if you ask me. There are some other things about the book I found questionable, but I will leave my review at that.
highly readable, but biased and light.......2007-05-18
The authors skill at the narrative style made this book a pleasure to read. While the writing style is the works greatest strength it is also its greatest weakness. By personalizing the third crusade in the actions of King Richard and Saladin the reader is drawn into the story. The book is not weighed down by the verbose language of a heavy academic work. Unfortunately the book lacks the intellectual weight to make up for its clean writing. At times I felt like I was reading a screenplay vice a historical work. The focus on dialogue and action at the expense of analysis caused the book to feel light and empty.
While it weaved a good tale, I felt like I was missing out on many of the details and nuances of the 3rd crusade. The author also seemed to have a distinct bias against the Christian forces. The Crusades always painted in a negative light, while the Islamic forces were brave and devout.
Well written history.......2007-03-02
James Reston is one of those rare historians who can also tell an extremely good story. He just sucks you into the life and times and has given me a fascination for the historical period in this book. I wish historians wrote this well all the time.
Warriors of God.......2007-01-11
While this is a historical analysis of activity surrounding the Third Crusade, it is very relevant to today. All readers will readily relate to the "War" in Iraq and other militant happenings in the Middle East. If political leaders become more sensitive to these historical events and their causes, we could achieve peace now.
James Reston presents so much in a very easily read tome. His style is for anyone from those of us with casual interest to scholars of the period.
Saladin VS. Richard.......2006-12-13
This was an interesting book on one of the most famous military campaigns in medieval history: the Third Crusade. Two leaders -- Richard, king of England, and Saladin, sultan of a united Egypt and Syria -- waged war up and down the coastline of the Holy Land, both towering over their armies and their subjects in legend and reputation. Chock full of good stories, this book kept me entertained during the time it took to read it.
Book Description
This new edition of the acclaimed bestseller is lavishly illustrated to convey, in pictures as in words, Bill Bryson’s exciting, informative journey into the world of science.
In A Short History of Nearly Everything, beloved author Bill Bryson confronts his greatest challenge yet: to understand—and, if possible, answer—the oldest, biggest questions we have posed about the universe and ourselves. Taking as his territory everything from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization, Bryson seeks to understand how we got from there being nothing at all to there being us. The result is a sometimes profound, sometimes funny, and always supremely clear and entertaining adventure in the realms of human knowledge, as only Bill Bryson can render it.
Now, in this handsome new edition, Bill Bryson’s words are supplemented by full-color artwork that explains in visual terms the concepts and wonder of science, at the same time giving face to the major players in the world of scientific study. Eloquently and entertainingly described, as well as richly illustrated, science has never been more involving or entertaining.

This should be in everybody's library.......2007-10-01

The Perfect Gift for a Guy.......2007-09-15
This is a perfect book to give any guy in your life that likes the History or Discovery channel...fast paced, full of facts and details but never boring it is truly a short history of nearly everything. I couldn't put it down. Great book!
Not quite of everything but a decent read.......2007-08-22
I gifted this to someone and then went and read it at the library... and I kinda regreted gifting it... I think the author did his research well.. but I also think he focusses a lot more on certain areas while leaving out several others untouched.
What I liked most was his research and mention of people (inventors, discoverers, archaelogists) that had major contributions to what we know about the world today, but never actually hear about the names of those people... simply because they weren't popularized as much as the Einteins and the Newtons of the time.
Excellent Science .......2007-07-28
I have both audio, and text and I can't get enough of both. The illustrated version makes excellent gifts for those who appreciate in-depth science. Bryson has a sense of humer that I find myself laughing at times.
Nearly Everything.......2007-07-07
Just about anything you have ever wondered about is answered in this book. My son requested it for Christmas and has enjoyed reading it.
