What do Ted Turner and Rupert Murdoch want out of life? Apart from the usual pleasures--love, fortune, good health--they apparently want to control the world's media. And, to judge by this account, each wants the other's head on a platter.
"In another time, they might have dueled on a grassy plain with muskets, or faced each other at high noon at opposite ends of a dusty street, holsters slung low on their hips," writes media/entertainment pundit Hack. Turner and Murdoch have chosen to fight it out, with undisguised venom, in a singularly public venue--Turner through CNN and other networks, Murdoch through Sky and Fox TV, plus a host of magazines and newspapers. Turner espouses liberal views while Murdoch is a hard-line conservative, but both are supreme "controllers of information" and "manipulators of public opinion," according to Hack. Their fight has cost billions of dollars, and it's wounded more than a few bystanders. It has also, as Hack rightly notes, set the tone for the contemporary press, for the worse, sacrificing journalistic integrity in the interest of two "competing political agendas ... until there is one."
Balanced, for the most part, if only because Hack seems to have little affection for either of his subjects, Clash of the Titans is a readable account of a private war between prideful tycoons with long memories. Media buffs will find much of interest in this portrait of "colliding storm fronts," both of whose reach extends far and wide. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
When Robert Edward (Ted)Turner III started out in business, he owned a small billboard company in rural Georgia. What he has eneded up with is the vice-chairmanship of AOL Time Warner throught he sale of his $3 billion empire, which includes CNN, superstation WTBS, Turner Network Television,Turner Classic Movies, the Atlanta Braves, the goodwill Games and MGM Studios.
Risk-taking, careful planning and steely determination are the hallmarks of this brash, outspoken and wildly succesful media mogul.
On the other side of the world his counterpart, Keith Rupert Murdoch, impeccably dressed, ruthless and hungry for success, began with one small Australian newspaper and parlayed it into 125 newspapers and magazines around the glove, the Fox, Inc., motion picture and television conglomerate, and news satellites on four continents.
These two men, controllers of much of the news and entertainment we receive every day, have long traded barbs and vitriolic attacks, creating an intense race for complete domination of the media. Turner and Murdoch are the major players in the media world today - and both have personal lives as complicated as their business dealings. Family squabbles, public divorces, high-profile romances, huge charitable bequests and their appearances at the most exclusive gatherings in the world have made both moguls entertainment news in their own papers and news magazine shows.
This meticulously researched look at media business is also a dual biography. In great detail it delves into both the personal and professional lives of these two outsize figures, their fierce competition, and their enormous effect on American daily life.

GREATEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN ON SILENTS.......1999-02-07
Every major film historian and scholar concurs that THE MOVIES IN THE AGE OF INNOCENCE is the greatest book ever written on silent films. None of us younger historians can ever hope to come close to the quality achieved by this great man. As far as I'm concerned, his word is law as far as movie history is concerned. Mr. Wagenknecht turns 99 this March on the 28th, and is recovering very nicely at his home from the bad spell he went through October through January. We owe a tremendous debt to this great man.
Book Description
This innovative, one-of-a-kind compendium is decidedly upscale. It treats cannabis as just another fine thing to be savored, like a great wine, good cigar, gourmet chocolate, or single malt scotch. Author Steven Wishnia, a former senior editor at High Times, America's most popular counterculture magazine, divulges everything the aspiring connoisseur needs to know, including the long history of cannabis and its biochemical properties, the best vineyards, step-by-step diagrams on crafting joints, smoking etiquette, and a top 20 list of the very best strains, complete with tasting notes.

Contemporary Overview of History and Science of Marijuana, Cannabinoids and Endocannabinoids.......2006-11-03
This is a beautifully illustrated book that covers cannabis from botony to brain in a very intelligent manner. I use this book as a resource for teaching. It helps me answer students questions ranging from legal issues to the cultural history of cannabis use. I should disclose that I study anandamide and 2-AG in my basic research and was interviewed by the author for the part of the book on "Cannabis and the Brain".
Surprisingly inadequate & inaccurate.......2005-01-02
The book is laid out decently enough, with plenty of pretty full color pictures. It appears to be intended as merely an overview and/or basic review.
The book attempts to provide a broad range of topics:
1-History
2-Botanical Facts
3-Cultivation
4-Techniques, Effects, and Customs
5-The Connoisseur
6-General information
However, each of these topics has very little depth. It will not provide any more insight into growing, use, or culture than what you could find on either of the two large online cannabis forums.
There is much missing in this book, and many inaccuracies. Included recipes leave out how much to put in. Growing recommendations and expectations are patently wrong. The cultural history is incomplete. It's hard to believe that a former High Times editor put this together.
This isn't a terrible book on cannabis, but there are so many better ones out there. Don't waste your time with this one.

An Ambitious Pre-Prequel Project.......2006-04-12
For Star Wars fans of the mid-Nineties, liking Star Wars was actually a defining characteristic - it wasn't frowned upon as Star Trek unfortunately is - and any new info or project was savagly consumed. So, when Lucasfilm announced it's 'Star Wars Movie Without The Movie', fans were thrilled.
This book ties together every chapter unveiled in multimedia (the book, the comic, the toys, the CD, and the video game) and weaves together the entire story, from inception to execution. It's not narrative of course, it's a guide, but for anyone who wants the entire story of Episode V 1/2 compiled or explained, or just wants to revisit 1996, this is a great book.
Interesting.......2003-10-07
This book answers a lot of questions yet raises many more. How did Black Sun start? What deadly flaw was the Emporer hiding? A very interesting read.
Enjoyable.......1999-06-05
This is the first Star Wars book I've completed. It's good and falls right in place with the rest of the Star Wars trilogy.

Not enough detail........1999-01-02
This book doesn't show where the 15th challenge point is for the Gall Spaceport level. Challenge point location details are often lacking in every chapter, and the maps are crudely drawn and difficult to read at best. There are far too many cute descriptions about what is happening on the screen (e.g., "...burn another wampa."). Cut the chatter: just give us precise details and cheat codes. That's what makes a good game guide.

EXCELLENT BOOK!.......2007-04-09
Well written with a lot of new ideas and useful info.
However, with the money I spent, I wish that I got more quantity than a mear newsletter. Having known then what I know now, would I still spend the cash on it? Definitely!
nope!.......2006-10-24
pretty outdated... the ratio of the added value of the book to the time spent to read it is far below than i expected..
Classic and essential, this and Hull are mandatory.......2005-11-15
Baird's "Option Market Making" is the *other* essential options book that any serious practitioner should read. Whether you are buy-side or sell-side, or trading your own book, this work is fundamental and extends where Hull leaves off. In short, pricing models do not a bid-offer spread make, and Baird illuminates this dark world with the well-crafted sunshine of expertise, mathematical rigor, and experience. In addition, Baird's prose is clean, clear, readable and lean, without glossing over tough spots or ignoring extremes.
Baird's 1993 "Option Market Making" while a bit dated, is becoming recognized as an enduring classic. Not because it is up-to-date with the latest smile dynamics from the research of Avellenada or Rebenato, but because it does what it does very well. Like a classic cookbook such as The Joy of Cooking, this work tells you how to make perfect pot roast, but not the latest slow braised chipolte-rubbed hand-aged hanger steak.
Baird's "Option Market Making", indeed, is an economic anomaly, for it refutes an old chestnut: "those who can't do, teach." In the financial publishing world a book that makes or saves you money should not exist, since the expected return of taking the time and work for authorship is much lower than another economic activity (probably including flipping hamburgers). What motivated Baird? Who knows? But this is pure saved gold here.
Option neophytes should not be misled: this is not a book of "secrets of" that will lead you to quick easy riches in the sometimes wild swings of delta and gamma in options markets. Rather, this is a sober, careful, useful book on the actual difficulty of making a market under uncertainty and rapidly changing information sets. This is a work for practitioners and professionals who want to survive and thrive, not "*just*drive!*" Cowboys and "feelings" punters look elsewhere to scratch your itch.
Standout chapters include "Options Risk" which treats delta, gamma, lambda, theta, kappa/vega, rho, skew, and time spread risks in a clear, although direct and quick, manner. "Position Risk Profiles" covers the meat and potatoes of an options market maker: what is in your book at any one time. This chapter mercifully is not in a "panic mode" tone, but rather carefully and soberly guides you through essentials of risk determination for your entire book.
The chapter "On Strategy" will be helpful for punters and those who have committed some capital to being a market maker, covering delta neutrality (yawn!), but more importantly time spreading, expiration, Fences, and high volatility periods (yeah!). It also treats broker order flow and open interest analysis in a sober way ("saucer bottom" and "reverse hook" technical analysis copter beanies need not apply).
The chapter "Market Making Tactics" is perhaps the most aggressive, but it also patiently spells out what option market makers do on a daily basis. The entry on "common mistakes" alone is worth the price of this volume. Baird closes with a lighter "Observations from the Floor," which it behooves all to read nd revist upon occasion. Having worked in a pit myself, all I can say is "amen Brother, and again I say amen."
Out of date.......2005-07-04
Just out of curiosity it may be worth skimming through its pages, but the way Mr Baird used to trade in the past (with sheets to get ur position from) is far away from how this is done today. Hence, do not surprise yourself if discussions such as smile delta and smile gamma do not come into play.
Best introduction to options.......2003-12-24
I highly recommend this book for a basic, clean, non-pretentious presentation of option trading from a market maker's point of view. Baird can also write English: very clear, linear, simple prose. The man has no axes to grind or ego trips to take, and he knows what he's talking about, and gives very practical advice.

One feels closer to Joan in these pages than in any modern biographies.--Saturday Review
Customer Reviews:
Saint Joan speaks for herself in this great biography!.......2007-08-22
This is one of my favorite biographies about Saint Joan of Arc because it relies so heavily upon the actual quotes of Saint Joan and her contemporaries. Instead of writing a traditional narrative, Régine Pernoud cleverly uses Joan's own words or those of the people around her to give us her history. Tracing Joan's life from beginning to end, Pernoud relies on Joan's quotes as much as she can. She does add just enough narrative to keep the biography coherent but by using Joan's own words, we are able to get a sense of what her personality was like. As the title proclaims, this biography is really written by Saint Joan and her witnesses.
Just the Facts, Ma'am.......2005-09-01
Pernoud's wonderful history of Joan of Arc is written in chronological order and is taken directly from the testimonies of those who knew Joan, but especially from her trial of condemnation and trial of rehabilitation.
The testimony of Joan of Arc really forces one to come to grips with the doctrine of the communion of saints. Joan was a stumbling block for me for quite a while.
Having been beaten up by bishops, I bonded with Joan when I first read her testimony. This girl was so pure and saintly...such that I have a great love for her.
Pernoud's book is beautiful because you don't have to dodge through any private opinions or interpretations. This is really a "primary source."
If you're looking for a great deal of background material, you might look elsewhere, but often broader histories are very opinionated. This book is just the facts.
Comprehensive, interesting, and very well-written .......2005-04-19
This book rocks. The author, Regine Pernoud intertwines the dialog of Joan's condemnation trial with parts of the rehabilitation trial, and offers background and discussion of the events as they happen, from the people who lived during that time, beginning from Joan's childhood until even after the rehabilitation trial. At the end of each chapter, Pernoud gives a commentary that takes certain questions about unclear aspects of Joan's life and discusses them by giving textual evidence and reasoning through them. The result is a very comprehensive, non-fiction biography of Joan that states only the facts, and any speculation is based on facts as well.
I think the way Pernoud arranged the book works very well, as I couldn't put the book down. I was amazed by this because I pretty much dislike most non-fiction books. This one is so comprehensive yet incredibly interesting as well. Even though it is non-fiction, you can tell the author was very passionate about what she was writing. As a result, the reader becomes excited as well. Anybody wants to learn about the true facts of Joan's life and the time she lived in should read this book. It'll definitely make you admire her even more.
The very best non-fiction book on Joan of Arc.......2001-08-23
Regine Pernoud is an expert on Joan of Arc, and makes you feel almost like YOU know her too. I laughed. I cried. The telling of the story from Joan's own words and the testimony of those who knew her puts this book on the top of my list.
I liked it better than Pernoud's book, "Joan of Arc: Her Story," but it's not quite as comprehensive. Both are excellent books, but I rate this title a little higher.
If you really want to feel like you walked with Joan, read Mark Twain's fictional diary, "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc," told from the point of view of her childhood friend-later-scribe. One of the greatest reads of my life! A Book that really changed my perspective on a lot of things.
Joan of Arc.......2001-05-29
Joan of Arc was a book about a series of wars between France and England over the feud for the Crown of France. Saved by a women warrior the crown was awarded to it's proper owner, but then the military and nobility backstabbed her and accused her of being a witch. I thought the book was really interesting because of all the action and discrimination against women.
Book Description
Beginning in the eighteenth century with the building of St. Petersburg and culminating with the Soviet regime, Figes examines how writers, artists, and musicians grappled with the idea of Russia itself--its character, spiritual essence, and destiny. Skillfully interweaving the great works--by Dostoevsky, Stravinsky, and Chagall--with folk embroidery, peasant songs, religious icons, and all the customs of daily life, Figes reveals the spirit of "Russianness" as rich and uplifting, complex and contradictory--and more lasting than any Russian ruler or state.
Customer Reviews:
Great reading of Russky history.......2007-01-25
Amazing, such history, told so well, I cannot put it down!
Very well done.......2006-11-29
Figes has managed to write an engaging history that reads quickly, yet is rigorous and packed with information. The work elaborates beautifully on the Russian identity crisis between East and West, as well as the conflict between the peasantry and nobility. Particularly enjoyable is the coverage of the eastern peoples, such as the Tatars, and the culture of the peasantry. In addition, the author dwells on religion and spirituality -- the role of the Orthodox Church in Russian life, and its various divergent branches -- monastics, ascetics, Old Believers, holy fools and, of course, the mainstream church.
Figes explores many aspects of culture, including literature, music, dance, theatre, painting, and much more. The work isn't dry, however. Figes weaves together numerous intriguing tidbits and andecdotes, for example, the tragic life of Anna Akhmatova under the Soviets, or what it means to dine on the "Sheremetev account", or the private operas featuring divas of serf origin.
It is astonishing that a topic so broad could be covered so competently in one volume. "Natasha's Dance" is a superb synthesis that promises a rewarding journey to the history-oriented reader.
How to Supplement Figes' Work.......2006-10-07
Several of the earlier reviewers have covered the book very well, including both its strengths and weaknesses. I have to nothing to add or subtract, but some recommendations to make. There is a very good "interpretive" cultural history of Russia written in the 1960's by James Billington (who is the Librarian of Congress). The book is still in print and is one of five or six concerning Russian history and culture written by Billington. For reader-reviewers who felt that Russian history prior to the late 17th century was slighted by Figes, Billington's book is the place to go for information on the earlier period, especially on Russian Orthodoxy --its art, architecture, and influence on political and cultural life. The abundance and high quality of 20th century translations of Russian literature (both prose and poetry)almost obviates the need of a "cultural interpreter" for the period of the last 120 years or so. Edmund Wilson's "To the Finland Station" does this sort of job for the relationship between the radicalized ideas of the Enlightenment and Russian political life, but should be read with the cautionary note that he himself lost his enthusiasm for Leninism as a real solution to Russia's age-old social and economic problems. Reading a typical 1930's era hagiography of Stalin by any Western writer who leaned to the left is especially informative if you read any of the post-mortem biographies (Volkogonov's, R. Tucker's, etc.)that tell the truly awful story of the man, who chose to bestride culture as well as politics as a "colossus". Chekov, Bulgakov and the far less talented Solzhenitsyn(I mean this only from the point of literary skill, his importance lying in other directions) will also show you life as perceived by those who have lived it in its recent Russian incarnation. My "supplementary" list slights a few areas (the visual arts, music, film), but each of these areas has been treated in depth and with finesse by 20th century authors whose work is available in English. Like any book of this type, Figes' work should be a starting point from which the reader can branch out along many possible paths (and then come back and read it again, say five or ten years later, after exploring some of the territory in depth; then he or she will be able to better judge whether or not it does a good comprehensive job.)
Full of information but poorly written.......2006-07-15
As a Russian Student at Moscow Lomonsov State University, my whole education is surrounded by Russia, Russians, and most of all history. I love it. But I don't love this book. I've had it for almost three years and still can't get around to finishing it all. It's a big, big book. One of the reason why I love history books so much is because they are a bargain! However that didn't turn me off, I actually was quite happy with the amount of information and the color excepts were fantastic. I can tell the author is enthusiasm for the cultural history because it goes from speaking about traveling musicians to how Peter the Great abhorred the unwesternized ways of Moscow. I mean, it goes from one thing to an completely different topic in only a paragraph on one page, and then picks up back with describing the local music of the small villages. The information is so rich and he wants to describe everything to us at once that the reader can get so overwhelmed and lost that it becomes boring to read. It isn't my first history book and I have so many unexciting textbooks I have to read, but I rather read my law book -- in Cyrillic -- then attempt to actually finish this book. You would think with around 700 pages he would be able to take his time. No doubt, this is for the serious reader and someone who is in need to cite something for their term paper (the index works very well indeed, that's one star) and the major information it gives you that you could hardly find in a text book (that's another star) but as reading you c
A Moving Portrait of Russian Culture.......2005-11-26
This is an extraordinarily moving portrait of Russian culture, seen through its writers, poets and composers, peasant folklore, painters and aristocratic manners. The motif that runs through the book is the tussle between the western and the eastern influences in the Russian consciousness, a tussle that gives the Russian soul its peculiarly dichotomous cahracter, and Russian culture it distinct blend of western rationality and eastern mysticism. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the differences between MOscow and St. Petersburg, the latter modelled after the grand capitals of Europe; the former evolving with the earthiness of Mother Russia, complete with its oriental onion-domes that look like something out of the Arabian Nights. The most poignant part of the book is the efforts of post-revolution Russian emigres in coming to terms with the "loss" of Russia in all its physical vastness, a landscape that had so informed their art. Thier longing for Russia was an almost visceral yearning that tormented them all their lives. (For a similarly moving book on the modern Chinese artistic/intellectual tradition, see Jonathan Spence's THE GATE OF HEAVENLY PEACE.)

Book Description
Oil field worker, soldier, Washington bureaucrat, professor, farmer, builder, academic dean, and international consultant. These are some of Jake Smith's job titles chronicled in this memoir. Dining with dictators is just one small episode in an eclectic career. This book documents Smith's life and times --- from a small town in rural Louisiana to presidential palaces in Africa; from struggles to survive on a Tennessee farm to struggles in academia, where the stakes are small, but the fights are vicious. Dinner with Mobutu covers Smith's 40-year fascination with Africa --- from student to scholar to political consultant.

a life well lived.......2006-02-22
Jake Smith's chronicle of his life takes the reader along for a delightful ride. I loved reading about his childhood and his college years as a white man at Howard University. His diverse background includes living 'off the earth' and traveling to facinating areas of Africa. His time as a dean at Boston Universtiy adds an interesting background to university life. Enjoy the read!
