As a former leading marketing and PR executive in the milk industry, Dan Wettlin, Jnr has an eye for both the usual and the unusual, in personal and professional life. With gentle humor and keen observation, he tells intimate stories of life in America with iceboxes and scrub boards, before television, supermarkets and the Pill. Book Description
When people in an organization or community get together and work for change, the result can be powerful. But managing group dynamics is often difficult. This unique guide showcases 18 tried-and-true methods for facilitating change in a group situation, each explained by an expert who developed or elaborated the method. The book explains what each method is rather than how to do it, with extensive suggestions for further reading.
Customer Reviews:
Too general.......2002-07-13
The book provides general information about different organizational intervention methods. Since most of the writers in this book provide only introductory information and market their method in a similar way, you can't really see much difference between them. If you want to learn how to work with any of those techniques, I suggest you buy the book that focuses on your area of interest.
a good survey of change tools.......2002-02-03
This book is ok - I do this kind of work for a living so there was nothing new in it for me and I returned it - but for those needing an intro to change approaches/techniques this is a good start. My problem with books like this is that they tell you the tools and the how tos to some extent but the real value in engaging in change efforts is knowing when/where the alligator in the swamp is going to pop up and bite you. They don't lay out any lessons learned or things to watch out for so for the unsuspecting they may engage in a change effort and have it fail due to poor delivery etc.
A good place to start for doing large scale interventions.......2001-06-29
When you want to change a company and you do this top-down, using a cascade system in which higher levels of your organisation change the lower levels, you are in for a long change process. For instance, specialists will tell you it can take 7 years before you really change a company's culture. No wonder people like Art Kleiner (co-author of "The Dance of Change") will warn you that up to 70% of your change efforts will fail. The solution comes from taking a more systemic approach, involving as much people of the organisation at once as possible. These kinds of large scale interventions often do wonders if the management is willing to work in a more participative manner. Some methods are more directed to specific change goals, whether it is to set a new direction for your organisation or redefining working relationships (re-organising the buisiness); other methods are more adaptable.
This book will help you find your way in the world of large scale interventions. The 18 proven group methods each have a chapter, written by originators and/or foremost practitioners. Each method-chapter includes a case, the explanation of the methodology, the conditions to success, the theoretical basis, etc. In the back of the book you'll find a table describing all 18 methods (explaining how many people can be involved, how lang the change process takes, how it impacts the organisation, etc.). Once you have found which method fits your situation, you'll find references to more specific books explaining a particular method. Another book painting the big picture as well is Barbara Bunker's "Large Scale Interventions".
I recommend the book as a place to start, if you are prepared to treat your organisation as having more EQ than each of the individuals.
Patrick E.C. Merlevede -- co-author of 7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence
I also submitted a "listmania" list entitled "Systemic Large Group Interventions" in which you'll find more references on this topic.
Insightful!.......2001-05-09
This handbook of change is a must-have for any executive, simply as a primer in the language spoken by consultants. Read this book and become instantly familiar with the latest, most successful, and even the trendiest theories of change management. The editors have evaluated 18 leading change methods, as applied and tested by some of the largest corporations in the United States. They group the change methods by functional categories, making it easier for readers to go directly to the method that applies to their particular problem. Another bonus: The leading practitioners in the field write the change method chapters, bringing a unique depth of perspective. The editors also have written several excellent chapters on the nature of change. An extraordinary comparative matrix - worth the price of the book by itself - is included in the "Afterword." We [...] recommend this book to executives, managers, change agents, human resources professionals and students.
A Resource Treasuretrove.......2000-02-23
Holman and Devane have created an amazing resource for anyone interested in helping to shape the future of our organizations and communities. 18 proven group methods each have their own chapter written by originators and/or foremost practitioners.
The editors have done an excellent job of sheparding each chapter so that the story is alive, honoring the uniqueness and history. And, also, consistent information is presented, allowing comparison among the methods. The comparative matrix is a powerful tool for picking methods appropraite to a particular context.
Reading each chapter is like having a conversation with an expert; it is a quick and most effective way of understanding the method. Then, to dig deeper, the book provides a comprehenhsive list of resources for each method.
There is a synergy between the methods that makes this book more powerful than 18 separate books (and very much more accessible). And Holman's and Devane's editing and opening and closing chapters weave all into a beautiful tapestry. If you care about creating the future, this book provides help.

:).......2002-10-07
This book is so much fun, if you haven't read it you should. It's full of interesting hands and interesting people, not the least of whom is Zia himself. You may not learn much of direct value to your game, but you'll certainly laugh! "Bridge My Way" is a great reminder that there's a lot more to this game than memorizing bids and percentage plays.
Excellent, excellent book.......2002-04-27
You may or may not improve your level of bridge after reading this book, but you will certainly be entertained!! Zia has a natural flair for bridge and writing that comes through very well in this book. His description of the Paki Spade and other conventions are hilarious. This is a window into the life of one of the top professional bridge players. Exciting stuff!
Zia Mahmood, the entertainer.......2002-04-23
This book is a delightful read. Zia is an addict of Bridge. Not just addicted, but obsessed. His book illustrates the familiar experience that we all can relate to of becoming obsessed with a past time.
Zia plays with flair, table presence, and takes full advantage of the human element contained in Bridge. He shows us just how much is involved when playing Bridge -- much more than just the cards in front of us. Indeed, there is much to be said about the psychology of card play and Zia is the master card psychologist.
What a real Bridge Player really is?.......2001-08-16
Once you read this book you realize that the best part of knowing bridge is that you get to read a book like "Bridge My Way". Flambouyancy is omni present in the book and is as characterstic of the book as it is of the author himself. Zia, one of the best, sure know how to write. The book is filled with his charm and sense of humour. I would recommend this book to all bridge players who are interested in life.
good bridge, good entertainment value........2000-09-03
can a man be more vain then zia? probably not. is it justified? it is. a book by one of the greatest who ever played the game, and certanly the most interesting character of them. this book has a highly enternainig value, and of course a lot of facinating hands.

Walter Anderson is the editor of Parade, the magazine insert that appears in many U.S. Sunday newspapers; Parade's optimistic, all-American style is echoed in The Confidence Course. In addition to becoming more confident, Anderson wants to teach you how to win friends, influence people, and become an overall better person. His advice is deceptively simple: take responsibility for your behavior, do things rather than "try" to do them, act in spite of your fear, and practice tolerance of others. Anderson's confidence is catching; when he discusses how to speak in public both courageously and entertainingly, you might just forget your fears and go out and rent a lecture hall.
Book Description
An inspiring step-by-step guide to overcoming self-doubt and achieving personal and professional success.
Based on his popular course at the New School for Social Research in New York City, in The Confidence Course the former Marine, renowned storyteller and editor of Parade Walter Anderson teaches you how to choose what you want to be. In 20 interactive lessons, complete with excercises and real-life examples, Anderson offers rules to live by that can positively transform your life.
Customer Reviews:
If you don't believe in yourself, then who will?.......2006-07-15
"Confidence is the key to success", ok that is not a secret, but how to gain that consciousness of our inner power could be a tricky quest.
This book offers you twenty simple lessons, that addresses simple and direct solutions that will teach anyone how to gain self assurance, and attract others people attention and respect. You will find this book to be a personal workbook with exercises and examples from real life situations.
The seven steps developed along the 20 lessons in the book are:
- Identify who is responsible.
- Believe in something big.
- Practice tolerance.
- Be brave.
- Love someone.
- Be ambitious.
- Smile.
But a word of advice, no book can do anything for you that you are no willing to do. Buy this book only if you are willing to translate into action what you will learn, .. confidence can only be obtained from practice.
Comments on what individuals can do rather than causes.......2005-05-27
Anderson, editor of Parade magazine, offers advice to help people become more confident, win friends, and influence people. His tips include taking responsibility for your behavior, "doing" versus "trying," and acting in spite of fear. The book does not address the lack of confidence in the workplace felt by many people today due to the effects of incessant change.
A Great Book.......2005-05-11
This little book contains a lot of wisdom. Walter Anderson does not sugar coat things. If you work at it, your confidence can grow. Mine has. Confidence is indeed an attitude. I would recommend this book to any one.
Doesn't translate well to a book.......2005-05-02
This is called "The Confidence Course," because it is based on a course that Walter Anderson teaches. Actually, this is THE course. This book reads like the script of a self improvement course.
And, it's sad, because I would have loved to take this course. I think that the actual course is well worth however much he's charging for it.
However, Walter's course doesn't translate well to a book format. Every couple of pages it has an activity that would work well in a classroom, but fails miserably in a book. You're supposed to do all of these activities where you write stuff out on papers and wait a week while you try stuff. Since I just wanted to read the book, those were kind of annoying.
That's sad, too, because I would have loved to read an actual book by Walter Anderson on this subject rather than a script of a course. He should have an editor totally rearrange this into book format, and then re-release it.
It's got excellent content, and the content was exactly what I was looking for--how to re-program your brain, the negative power of "no" statements, tips on telling stories, and tips on giving speeches. But, the presentation of the content is poor.
And, I don't mind blatant self promotion of purchasing additional stuff in a book as long as the book has actual content. This book does deliver of both the blatant self promotion and the actual content.
"Great surface material".......2005-03-29
I've owned this book for some time now, and judging by the cover and title, you would think this book offers the complete plan for turning someone with low self-confidence to a totally confident individual. Wrong. This book covers topics such as; "How To Tell a Story", "How To Give A Talk", etc.. Sure, these are important attributes, but...
The last of the 7 steps was, "Smile", yet he gave no advice on the subject. Mr. Anderson is a wonderful writer, and yes, the steps he gives will further ones level of confidence, but there are better books. I was looking through my collection of self-confidence books, and I came across a great one. "I Dare You". Now read that one. This one is missing a lot. Read it anyway.

Book Description
Alice Walker and Pratibha Parmar expose the secret of female genital mutilation, a practice that affects one hundred million of the world’s women. New Introductions by the Authors.
Customer Reviews:
Don't be mislead by the title...... .......2006-11-14
I agree with previous reviews stating that there are much better resources out there. I was VERY disappointed in this book and think it is one of the most misleading titles/text I have ever read. This book barely touches on FGM with any detail or facts. It is 99% about her making the film and what they did on a daily basis. While that may be insightful to some, I wanted to know details about the issue. I have read Possessing the Secret of Joy by Alice Walker and this is a better book by far. I wouldn't waste the time to read or buy Warrior Marks and recommend you start with another book that actually deals with the topic. What a terrible follow up to Alice Walker's great start at educating us on FGM.
a waste of paper.......2006-03-25
I had high hopes for this work, hopes that were dashed when reading how the authors wanted to travel and explore their topic first hand but were afraid that they'd be harmed in Africa. As if Jane Goodall worried about being eaten when she studied our primate cousins.
Then the authors chose to avoid personal contact and do their research in the library, reading the works of other people, thus presenting older second hand material as accurate without bothering to check the veracity or continuity of the material.
Finally, the authors personal bias came through often such as when they complained how combing the hair of a black girl was abusing and degrading and even torturing the girl.
At least Dr Godall had the guts to ask if the beliefs we had about gorillas were true and then seek the truth in their homes. Ms Walker and friend rarely left the library or their hotel and passed off the works of other researchers without question other than to blame men for all the ills that befall women.
FYI- It is women who choose to pierce their own ears, labia and clits, not men.
If you wish accurate information on the subject of genital mutilation, look elsewhere because all you will find here is second-hand data and personal bias and personal insults against anyone who disagrees with them.
We African women need MORE books like this!!.......2004-10-21
I am Kola Boof, often and truthfully billed as the nation of Sudan's top woman writer. I am also a woman who is "vaginally circumcised"--mutilated, if you will. In fact, Sudan is Africa's leading nation for "FMG" as Americans call it.
"Warrior Marks" is a superior work by a superior woman.
While so many reviewers here have claimed that there are BETTER books on this subject than Walker's "Warrior Marks"....I would remind them that with so very little written about this subject in the first place--we need to read and value EVERYTHING that is offered on the subject, especially when offered by a Black Woman (Alice Walker) whose obvious love, care and respect for African women...seeps like a healing oil from every page.
It's no secret that Alice Walker is one of the great inspirations of my own literary career and much of my work as an African woman from the Nilotic peoples of Sudan is distilled through the prism of her own American voice---as I struggled to find a way to tell my own stories with as much truth and bareness as possible.
"Warrior Marks" is a tribute to the WORTHINESS of African women...a book that gives us permission to embrace our sexuality, to value our black bodies and to insist that those bodies be healed. It also gives us the chance for "forgiveness". And through Alice Walker's willingness to lay bare her own personal reactions and observations and "empathies"....a larger story of womanhood is revealed and committed to word.
GOD bless both Alice and Pratibah, for such COURAGE.
postcolonial ego soapbox.......2004-01-19
This postcolonial piece of garbage masks some very real issues. I expected far more intelligence and sensitivity from Alice Walker.
This book was great.......2003-08-05
Warrior marks was the account of all the time that Alice Walker and Pratibha Parmar spent in preparing for the documentary. They did not need to show how the mutilation is done because they painted a vivid enough picture. The book was about the emotional aspect of female genital mutilation. I must say that I commend them, especially Pratibha for the time that they spent preparing for the documentary. The book made me want to see the documentary. When Alice talks about herself in the book, she shows how her experiences were similar to that of the females in Africa. I recommend this book be read and the documentary seen.
Book Description
A hugely controversial work that exposes a series of scandals from Oliver North to the British royal family, The Secret War Against the Jews reveals as much about political corruption inside Western intelligence as it does about Israel. Using thousands of previously top-secret documents and interviews with hundreds of current and former spies, Loftus and Aarons, both veteran investigators, Nazi-hunters, and authors, present a compelling narrative. The authors demonstrate that numerous Western countries, especially the United States and Great Britain, have conducted repeated and willful spying missions on Palestine and later Israel over many decades. While on the surface these two countries and others profess to be ardent allies of Israel, they work, in fact, through their intelligence services to betray Israel's secrets to the Arabs. Their motive: oil and multinational profits, which must be attained at any price through international covert policies. The pageant of characters appearing in this narrative is vast and shocking. This is not only a compelling work of history, but also a volume whose grave allegations will be debated for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-08-24
This was a difficult book. I bought it because of its promised research between the wars and the American Nazi connection. I wanted to see if the "spy" business corroborated information that I have been discovering with regards to the funding of Hitler. It did. I was also impressed by the backgrounds of the authors. The remainder of the book dealing with after World War II, I can not vouch for. From my perspective we will just have to wait and see. All the allegations are possible but only future historical investigations will supply the truth. The book kept my interest and I read every page but its scope and deviousness is really beyond me. I still haven't made up my mind whether I am convinced enough to buy the authors other book about the Catholic Church. I may.
Secret War Against The Zionists.......2007-03-21
After having read Loftus's and Aarons's book, I realized its major flaw -- the title of their book: "The Secret War Against The Jews." To be fair and objective toward the proper analysis of modern history, the title of their book should have been: "The Secret War Against The Zionists!"
The authors seem to imply throughtout their book that ALL Jews are Zionists and that ALL Zionists are Jews (not true); and that ALL Jews believe they need a homeland (Israel) where they can be FREE to be Jews, as if the United States and the Statue Of Liberty never existed! (It's easy to prove that more Jews died of anti-semitism in Israel, in the last 60 years, than in the whole 250 year history of the United States! To imply that the U.S. is not safe for Jews (to be Jews) is, in and of itself, un-patriotic and anti-American!)
Before 1930, the Zionist's greatest enemies were not the anti-semites, but the vast multitude of world Jewry itself! Most Jews (who were essentially non-Zionists) were content to live in the nations of their birth. Those who were forced to migrate, because of anti-semitic pogroms (e.g., Russia and Eastern Europe), preferred to migrate to Western Europe and the United States, not Palestine! The Zionist's major dilemma (at the time, pre-1933), was a major lack of Jewish VOLUNTEERISM to go to Palestine! Without a Jewish people, there can be no Jewish state (i.e., Israel). This is one of the greatest 'epiphanies' of modern history, which is a major factor avoided in John Loftus's and Mark Aarons's book! When mass VOLUNTEERISM (Jews for Palestine) doesn't work, how might fanatical Zionists accomplish their goal of creating and populating the state of Israel??
The real secret war against "The Jews" came from the Zionists (themselves) and their (e.g., Stern Gang) covert collaboration with anti-semites (e.g., helping to bring the Nazis to power) in order to create a mass refugee class of Jews (non-volunteers) to go to Palestine. Without Hitler, there could be no Israel! Thus, the Holocaust which resulted in 6 million Jews dying and the creation of tens of thousands of surviving refugees with nowhere to go but Palestine! As a result, Western leaders tried to stop the forced migration of refugee Jews, by Zionists, to Palestine. The foreign policy establishment of both Britain and the United States (then & now) waged a secret war against the Zionists to keep them from destabilizing the Middle East by provoking the oil cartels' Islamic partners on the eve of a profitable 'Petroleum Era!'
There is also an important analogy that Loftus and Aaron avoided in their book! In the 1960's, Blacks (e.g., Martin Luther King, et al) fought for their HUMAN and CIVIL RIGHTS as citizens, here, in the United States. The Civil Rights Movement was NOT a campaign for the "right of Blacks to emigrate to a nation of their own, where Blacks can be safe to be Black!"
There will never be peace in the Middle East until people learn that there is a distinct difference between anti-semitism (racist bigotry against Jews) and anti-Zionism (a political campaign against Israeli national , ethnic, religious supremism); and that there is a common denominator (factor) that binds most Zionists with the objectives of most anti-semites (with the exception of the Arabs, of course): they would love for all Jews to go live in Israel!
The greatest suspense story of treachery against 20th Century Jews .......2007-01-11
This book is filled with the most incredible documented secret and unknown facts of treason agains the entire Jewish people around the world by "civilized" countries during the 20th Century and should be a required history textbook for all schools. It is also one of the best suspense and spy books ever written. I have already purchased 7 copies and given them as gifts and will continue to do so in the future.
Can the past be prologue?.......2006-08-31
Having been involved in intelligence work early in my life and having kept watching intel shenanigans, a book about the secret war against the Jews got my attention and I had an opportunity to read and research much of its contents. I found answers to questions I had not found since the creation of Israel. Why would such a widely divergent group of political leaders suddenly see eye to eye and approve something as controversial and futile as creating a Jewish State surrounded by masses of Arabs seeking their destruction? It is amazing how the founders of Israel were able to use the weaknesses of these world leaders to effectively blackmail them. In view of the current situation in Lebanon, Syria and Iran it was very educational to learn about the USS Liberty betrayal and subsequent conspiracy to hide the facts.
This is a disturbing yet revealing book that makes you wonder about how much you really know about the machinations and motivations of world leaders as compared to their public pronouncements and soundbites. If you are a serious reader blessed, or cursed, with sufficient cynical curiosity, you should read the book and judge its accuracy for yourself. I am warning you, however, you may have sleepless nights realizing how we have been and are being misled by a cynical shadow intel establishment.
The Secret War Against the Jews: How Western Espionage Betrayed The Jewish People.......2006-07-19
The book was in great conidtion; I have no complaints.

Few can talk with more personal authority about the range of human beliefs than Michael Shermer. At various times in the past, Shermer has believed in fundamentalist Christianity, alien abductions, Ayn Rand, megavitamin therapy, and deep-tissue massage. Now he believes in skepticism, and his motto is "Cognite tute--think for yourself." This updated edition of Why People Believe Weird Things covers Holocaust denial and creationism in considerable detail, and has chapters on abductions, Satanism, Afrocentrism, near-death experiences, Randian positivism, and psychics. Shermer has five basic answers to the implied question in his title: for consolation, for immediate gratification, for simplicity, for moral meaning, and because hope springs eternal. He shows the kinds of errors in thinking that lead people to believe weird (that is, unsubstantiated) things, especially the built-in human need to see patterns, even where there is no pattern to be seen. Throughout, Shermer emphasizes that skepticism (in his sense) does not need to be cynicism: "Rationality tied to moral decency is the most powerful joint instrument for good that our planet has ever known." --Mary Ellen Curtin
Book Description
In this age of supposed scientific enlightenment, many people still believe in mind reading, past-life regression theory, New Age hokum, and alien abduction. A no-holds-barred assault on popular superstitions and prejudices, with more than 80,000 copies in print, Why People Believe Weird Things debunks these nonsensical claims and explores the very human reasons people find otherworldly phenomena, conspiracy theories, and cults so appealing. In an entirely new chapter, Why Smart People Believe in Weird Things, Michael Shermer takes on science luminaries like physicist Frank Tippler and others, who hide their spiritual beliefs behind the trappings of science.Shermer, science historian and true crusader, also reveals the more dangerous side of such illogical thinking, including Holocaust denial, the recovered-memory movement, the satanic ritual abuse scare, and other modern crazes. Why People Believe Strange Things is an eye-opening resource for the most gullible among us and those who want to protect them.
Customer Reviews:
Good idea just no facts........2007-09-25
"Dr" Shermer seems to be on the same level as a Fundamentalist Christian. He want so badly for others to believe what he believes on in his case what he doesn't believe. He gives you what but not why. Sorry sir but that isn't enough. He falls in the same category as I must preach because I to have doubts about that it is I am preaching about.
Pretty good even if the title is misleading.......2007-09-21
For a while now I've been wondering why smart people around me believe in weird things. Great heavens, I've even met physics professors who believe that the Coriolis's force rotates the waters in a sink! When I saw this book I thought it can answer this question. It certainly tries, even though the author admits that it's a very difficult question. Unfortunately, only about 60 pages out of more than 300 are dedicated to this question, and the writing is complicated, with a lot of philosophical terms. Most of the book, however, is about weird things themselves and debunking them. I thought about taking off one star for that, but the information in those sections, even if unrelated to the book's title, is still very interesting and informative, not to mention well written and sometimes funny, so I reluctantly give the book full marks. The bottom line is I'm not sorry I bought it.
Disappointing.......2007-09-10
The title of the book seemed promising. But the book its self was very disappointing. It is not well organized and the scope of the book and the material presented seem far from each other. What I did not understand was if this was a book which through scientific reasoning showed that people believe in illogical things why include 2-3 chapters about Holocaust??? What's that have to do with it? Is this like a jewish propaganda or something ???
Point of departure..........2007-08-02
We are all guilty. Each of us holds some aspect of the irrational dear to our hearts. A belief that if we just root the right way for our home team, they will triumph. The thought that stepping on a crack will break our mother's back. It is human nature. Michael Shermer addresses some of the larger issues of irrationality and their impact on society at large and humanity in specific. He digs deeply into some very tricky topics and presents a comprehensive and readable treatise on thoguht and behavior.
I found his objective analysis of Holocaust deniers and their beliefs to be sound and free from the emotional rantings of those who simply devolve into ad hominem attacks. What was most interesting was Shermer's posing of a model for odd beliefs. Using the witch trials of the middle ages and a more recent event in rural America (the mad gasser of Mattoon, Illinois to be precise!), Shermer demonstrates how odd beliefs rise and fall in society. Given the speed and nature of the world wide web, one might expect odd beliefs to rise and fall with even more frequency and speed.
Pick up this book in order to refresh your critical thinking skills. As he points out in his Skeptic's Manifesto chapter, the role of the skeptic is not to perpetually doubt, but to maintain an open mind - just not so open one's brains fall out.
Reccommended for anyone interested in reason and skepticism........2007-07-25
If you believe that reason, rationality, and skepticism are the best ways to arrive at a conclusion for any subject, then read this book. If you're conspricacy theory prone, a believer in the paranormal, or believe things first and figure out why later, then you REALLY need to read this book.
