Book Description
Meet Katherine Goddard, owner of a print shop and publisher of the first signed copy of the Declaration of Independence; meet Madam C. J. Walker, whose hair care products brought her from her slave parents' dilapidated cabin to her own Hudson River estate; and meet Katharine Graham, publisher of the Pentagon Papers and owner of the Washington Post Company.
These are just three of the diverse women whose lives unfold in this engaging history of women entrepreneurs in America from the colonial era to the end of the twentieth century. Some ran businesses in industries dominated by men, such as iron and aircraft production, while others built businesses that marketed specifically to women, in industries such as beauty, fashion, and food. Despite facing gender discrimination and the burdens of work and family, these women entrepreneurs understood the value of a good idea, were willing to take a risk, and believed in the possibility of the American dream of success.

exhibition and looks at the lives of women from 1750 to 2000. Meet women who were and continue to be instrumental in building America.
Enterprising Women brings to life the stories of family, marriage, motherhood and business savvy success. Marriage was a crucial decision in a woman's life before the 20th century. A woman's choice in marriage ranked with survival, so a divorce could be the demise of a woman's lifestyle and life. Yet, Madam C. J. Walker, Elizabeth Arden and Martha Stewart endured and flourished after divorce while at the helm of their companies. Motherhood was a challenge (and still continues to be a challenge), so a few women remained single as in the case of Katherine Goddard whose business was a family business. Ellen Domoest sold paper dress patterns, Oprah Winfrey has taken self-improvement to billion-dollar success, Lillian Vernon started a catalog at her kitchen table and Maggie L. Walker became the first African American bank president. Enterprising Women is a must-have for every women and her daughter to know where she came from and what each of us are capable of achieving in business and on life's journey.

Book Description
Jazz has been associated with crime and immorality since early forms of the music were heard in the brothels of New Orleans and the gangster-owned clubs of the 1920s. This association encouraged the use of jazz in film noir, a genre preoccupied with tales of anxiety and urban decay, which flourished in American cinema during the postwar period. Yet, although the extent and nature of this "collaboration" has often been alluded to, it has rarely been examined in detail. Making significant use of archival sources and documentation, Jazz Noir seeks to correct this oversight, placing the films discussed in their proper historical context and utilizing an interdisciplinary approach that gives equal weight to the films--including such notables as Phantom Lady, I Want to Live!, and Taxi Driver--and to the indelible music that accompanied them. In so doing, it corrects a great many misunderstandings about this complex, ideologically tinged relationship. Television noirs of the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the cinematic neo-noirs of the 1990s, have used jazz and jazz-flavored music extensively, thus giving rise to the misconception that the genre and the musical style were always intertwined. But as author David Butler reveals, it was only when modern jazz had a number of prominent white exponents that it gained any kind of exposure in Hollywood cinema, and even then such exposure was limited. Nevertheless, the broad range of jazz styles was well suited to the broad range of films noir, and the historical approach Butler takes gives due weight to such considerations. The film noir of the 1940s are as different from the film noir of the 1950s as the jazz of the 1940s is from the jazz of the 1950s, and Jazz Noir provides a unique and valuable study of a rich aesthetic synergy.
Book Description
This well-illustrated book allows anyone with common sense, a clean kitchen, and a closet shelf to grow bumper crops of mushrooms. Besides step-by-step guides to cultivating four species of psilocybin-containing mushrooms, the book offers a wealth of additional information, including an introduction to mushroom biology, a resource guide for supplies, advice on discreetly integrating psychedelic mushrooms into outdoor gardens, and insights into the traditional use of psilocybins in sacred medicine. Also included are appendices with a summary of all included recipes.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent--but intimidating........2007-01-04
I really like this book, but I had to give it four stars because of its subtitle: "Easy Indoor & Outdoor Cultivation". The term "easy" is a little misleading. This book is a truly thorough work. In addition to the several chapters on cultivation methods and technique, the Mushroom Handbook contains a chapter devoted to the history of psilocybin mushrooms as well as chapters tackling biology and chemistry. You get a pretty hefty load of mushroom fun & facts for only two hundred pages.
I forsee a potential disappointment for those who purchase this book hoping to learn a simple approach to growing mushrooms. The instructions contained in this handbook are detailed, exacting and require the grower to purchase a long list of materials. I have to admit--I have NOT tried any of the techniques offered in this book. There are easier ways to grow mushrooms that require less time and expense. That being said, I think that the background knowledge and experience of the authors make this little number well worth the buy. It works as an excellent reference book, full of great tips to anyone willing to commit to the reading. The authors demonstrate sincere passion and expertise, and they aren't offering any shortcuts.
Keep up-to-date with the most successful techniques for mushroom growing at home.......2006-07-12
Mushroom cultivation techniques are improving fast, especially with the advent of Internet discussion boards where new techniques are being discovered every day.
This book is very recent (as of 2006), and is the clearest and most easy to read book I have seen on the subject. It gives a clear and concise summary of many of the best techniques for growing the most popular type of hobby mushrooms, and discusses where to go to learn more about mushrooms of all types.
Compared to doing research directly from the Internet, this book is clearly organized, well written and authoritative. But perhaps the most valuable resource in this book is its list of reputable web sites and forums on the Internet, which helps you avoid the unreputable sites. Scams on the Internet are abundant, and anyone new to this hobby needs to be careful to find trustworthy sources for discussion and for purchasing equipment and culture spores to experiment with. There are many sites that will make big claims and then not deliver, leaving many beginners frustrated and much poorer with nothing to show.
The importance of finding clear and reputable sources of information and supplies cannot be understated. This book will help you get started safely and quickly. Buy it, read it, then go to the forums listed and compare what you have learned with what other people have already been through. Use this knowledge to avoid the common scams and pitfalls. Follow this plan and you will be happy.
Excellent. Begin here........2006-06-13
An update on simple accessible grow techniques is long overdue. This is book is perfect for newbies. I recommend supplementing this book with other available information on the web, just to get a thorough scope of what's ahead of you, and what came before the improvements the authors present in the book. There's a surprisingly well written and researched Wiki page on psilocybin for those of you who are curious about its history and chemistry. Excellent color section, resource list and appendix.
Very easy to use handbook!.......2006-05-25
This book is great. I read it and it is very easy to follow. I knew nothing about growing mushrooms but this book made it easy to do. I love the photography that shows each step. It is well worth the buy. It showed me what supplies I needed and where to store them. I recomend this book to all.
This book IS in print, and it is excellent!.......2006-04-24
This is the most thorough book on this subject to be published, containing NUMEROUS methods for growing the mushrooms, a detailed list of materials needed, a glossary, background information, and 32 pages of color photos.
Book Description
This cutting-edge financial casebook is divided into four modules: Structuring Projects, Valuing Projects, Managing Project Risk, and Financing Projects. The cases have been carefully selected to reflect actual use of project finance over the past five years in terms of geographic location (the cases come from 15 different countries) and industrial sectors.
* Benjamin Esty, of the Harvard Business School, is one of the leading scholars in project finance.
* Project finance is becoming the financing mechanism of choice for many private firms.
* Cases require the reader to integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines when making a single managerial decision. This integration of functional areas such as strategy, operations, ethics, and human resource management encourages the reader to adopt a more integrative perspective and understanding of the interconnectedness of managerial decision-making.

Excellent Text for all levels.......2007-01-12
I am not in a finance field per se, but the case studies were easy to follow and analyze and provided for excellent readability. The amount of detail included in the presentations of each case is amazing. The cases span the entire world and cross numerous industries. There is also a noted focus on some projects spearheaded by the IFC.
It seems like this text would benefit anyone in the field while also interesting those who have never come across project finance.
Modern Project Finance - A Must-Have Text for all Project Finance Professionals.......2007-01-10
I must admit that I am a great fan of Professor Benjamin Esty.
When I bought this book I knew that I was going to come across well researched project finance case studies. The detail into which he goes into each transaction shows beyond doubt that he actually met/talked to the professionals who were an the coal-face of each transaction.
This book should also be a MUST-READ for all recent graduates who are starting out in Project Finance as it's written in a very user friendly fashion.
At the very beginning of this text book one is informed, contrary to popular belief, that Project Finance has been around for a very long time!
Five Stars material no doubt!

Modern Project Finance: A Casebook.......2007-01-10
This is an outstanding book and a very important resource for me as an instructor in project finance. The cases in this book are some the best that I have seen and are very rich in complexity and in the coverage of concepts.
Good insight in Project Finance.......2006-11-10
The book gives an interesting insight in Project Finance and is especially valuable for giving the rationale in using PF versus traditional Corporate Finance.
It gives evidence of the matter through a step by step procedure so that every case adds some knowledge. Excellent terminology section.
For not experienced professional, maybe it should be read in conjunction with some manual providing the basic principle and more insight in financial and legal technicalities.
Great Book.......2005-03-19
I used this for guidance as I was preparing a financing proposal for a methanol and formaldehyde chemical plant complex (US$250MM) and along with 'Principles of Project Finance' by E.Yescombe, I was well guided and my proposal was successful.

Solid and recommended biography of William Henry Harrison.......2007-09-11
I am currently reading a bio of every President in order. With the more obscure Presidents of the antebellum era, the task of finding a quality biography becomes a bit more difficult. For William Henry Harrison the choice is extremely easy, as I believe Freeman Cleaves' bio is the only non-juvenile one readily available (a new book about Harrison will be available in October called "Mr. Jefferson's Hammer", although it does not appear to be a full biography).
With my task of selection made simple, I am pleased to say that Cleaves' biography is fully satisfactory and is recommendable beyond the fact that it has a monopoly on the subject. Freeman's biography of Harrison is easy to read, well organized, and is as comprehensive and detailed as I believe most readers will desire.
Given that Harrison's Presidency lasted only a month, from the outset of this book I was concerned that I may not learn too much new information about American History. Thankfully, most of this book is dedicated to Harrison's life in Ohio and Indiana and I learned much about frontier life of the early nineteenth century, America's relationship and conflicts with the northwest Indian tribes, and the northern campaigns of the War of 1812 which had not been previously covered in other Presidential biographies that I have read.
While Cleaves' bio is not exceptional enough to merit five stars, it is more than adequate for its task and exceeds reasonable expectations of a biography about an obscure President. I strongly recommend it to anyone with an interest in presidential biography or early nineteenth century American and Native American history.
An excellent, informative and very readable biography........2007-08-28
Okay, the author isn't David McCullough; his writing style isn't THAT good. But very few biographers are, and this one is surprisingly readable especially given that he wrote in the 1930s. Also, he suffers slightly from a tendancy to over-lionize his subject, but again, not nearly as much as many authors, particularly from that time period. But this biography's strong suit is that it provides a wealth of information about a president who most Americans know next to nothing about. Some might remember the campaign slogan, "Tippecanoe and Tyler, Too", and be able to extrapolate from that and the fact that his successor was John Tyler that Harrison's nickname was "Tippecanoe"; a very few might know that the Tippecanoe in question was a battle at which Harrison fought. A particularly knowledgeable layman might be able to remember or figure out that said battle was in the War of 1812, based on the timing of Harrison's presidency (before the Civil War, well after the Revolution). What I suspect most Americans who would admit to having ever heard of Harrison will remember is that he died of pneumonia 30 days after becoming president, as a result of giving a long inaugural speech in the cold without wearing a hat or an overcoat, and according to this biography, even this piece of information is partially inaccurate; he DID die of pneumonia 30 days after his inaugural, and he DID give a long speech while disdaining a coat or hat, but he didn't become ill for 2-3 weeks after that, so it is doubtful that there is a causal relationship between the two facts.
There are biographies that I've read that were more informative and/or better written. But I have never read a biography that did a better job of increasing my knowledge of the subject, because my knowledge of this subject was so small coming in. That is why I give this book five stars rather than four.
Presidential Reader.......2007-01-12
Very thorough book. As Harrison had not much of a Presidency, the book is mostly about his military career. I found it very interesting. The book is well written and the author adds interesting bits of information along the way to keep the reader well entertained. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to get a chronological view of American History and the Presidency.
Harrison needs new biography.......2006-04-21
If the reader is interested in a chronological presentation of Harrison's life, this biography may be fine. For those seeking an analysis of his life and times, Cleaves makes several factual errors and contextual omissions in his biography.
Cleaves describes Tecumseh, Harrison's principal foe in several battles for control of the Ohio Valley, as a triplet and he claims that Tecumseh's mother was a Creek. Neither is true. Methotasa, born Cherokee, was captured and then adopted into the Shawnee tribe. She married Tecumseh's father in about 1753. Tecumseh was born in 1768, nearly three years before his mother gave birth to the triplets. In order of birth, they were Kumskaka, Sauwaseekau and Lowawluwaysica. It is the third triplet, later called Tenskwatawa the Prophet, and the circumstances of his birth, that Cleaves confuses with Tecumseh.
Tecumseh is also described as the Shawnee war chief, which he was not nor ever claimed to be. The Shawnee Nation was divided into five "septs," Maykujays, Packuwes, Thawegilas, Kispokothas and Chalahgawthas. Each sept had its specific charge. The Kispokothas were the warrior sept. Tecumseh was Chalahgawtha. Tecumseh, by tribal tradition, was of the wrong sept to ever be considered for the position.
To understand Harrison's place in American history, a biography must include an analysis of Harrison's approach to western lands acquisition, his relationship with the several Indian nations and the the broader context of these events in American/European diplomacy.
There is certainly a place for a new biography of Harrison.
An Unknown President.......2006-04-03
Harrison is probably one of the least known presidents. Serving in office for only a month, very little is written about him, and this book was the only volume I was able to find on his life written for adults.
It portrays his earlier career as an indian fighter in a very enlightening way, and lets the reader get a feel for the times that is often missed in more conventional biograhpies.
I wish the author had spent a little more time on Harrison's home life with his wife and children, but the book does shatter many of the myths surrounding Harrison's life that were published about him during the election of 1840.
The biography at times is a little slow, but overall is a good read and is an excllent insight into the 9th president of the United States.

One book you will need as a writer........2007-08-23
This book has all the stuff you will need to make your novel seem real. I promise you will enjoy this book even if you are not a writer. I found the answers to all the questions I had been asking. I thank Marc McCutcheon for all his hard work. It has helped me.
Great information at your finger tips.......2007-01-29
This is a great reference guide. I am currently writing a romance novel set in the mid 1800's. The chapters are easy to find what you're looking for and the examples show how the word or phrase was used. If your looking for a great reference guide that is straight to the point I would highly recommend "Everyday Life in the 1880's"
Mediocre, missing essential information, poorly constructed.......2006-06-12
This book lacks any information about education. Such an essential subject - affecting children and adults alike - should certainly be included.
Nor does it include information about art (visual/performing) or literature pertinent to the people at the time.
It also has no index, so that searching for anything is ridiculously slow.
Visuals are lacking - textual descriptions of hair or various equipment are poor substitutes for an image.
Essentially it is a poorly organized dictionary, and stating that it is "a guide for writers, students and historians" is an overstatement to say the least!
Simply a dictionary .......2006-03-09
When I read the description of the book I thought that this book would actually provide information about everyday life in the 1800's; instead, it is merely a dictionary. There are no passages that describe fashion, etiquette, industry, clothing, or anything else useful to a historian. Instead, the book merely provides one sentence descriptions of objects you probabaly can already identify. This book may be useful if you come across the name of an item in a primary text and you are not sure what it is. However, it provides very little useful general information
Holy disorganization, Batman...........2005-12-28
It's been a few months since I read this, but I thought I might give a review.
I found this book horrid. It was not organized in a way that would be simple and easy for a reader. As a writer of historical fiction I was interested in finding out about daily life during the Civil War. But I would find references from all years thrown together so I had to fish out the important details. It was not broken down by years or decades which I think would have been much easier. I gave up on this book because I couldn't find the information I needed.
If you are a writer and are thinking about this book I suggest getting it from the library, and if you believe it will be of use to you buy it then.

The Bottom Line of Influence Here In the Land of Aloha.......2005-05-19
Cooper and Daws thoroughly document the shifts in land and power of the last century. For anyone living here (especially on Oahu) wondering how our islands became this way developmentally, this book is a must read. Personally, living in Salt Lake and a good portion of my life in Makakilo, this book gave excellent information as to who the players were (many estates still with tremendous clout to this day) and how they played the game. There's even an interesting chapter on organized crime that names the names of figures who are still kicking. Anyone considering moving to Hawaii will find this a helpful resource to get a feel for much of the politics and how many groups of cultural backgrounds have related to each other. The reader should also gain understanding as to the high cost of living in paradise.
Book Description
"Ecology has experienced a major paradigm shift over the last half of the twentieth century. This shift requires major rethinking of the relation of religion and environmental ethics to ecology because our scientific understanding of the nature side of that relationship has changed. This book is the first, to my knowledge, that is meeting this challenge head on, and it is doing so in an exemplary way." J. Baird Callicott, University of North Texas
"Everything on Earth is becoming unbalancedescalating populations and consumption, global warming, extinction, troubling ecosystems that by nature are fluxing, evolving, often disturbed, even chaotic. What can and ought we conserve, preserve, sustain on this planet in jeopardy? Here science and religion join in urgent dialogue, a seminal search for answers as we face an open future, with promise and peril." Holmes Rolston, III, Colorado State University
For many years, ecologists and the environmentalists who looked to ecology for authority depicted a dichotomy between a pristine, stable nature and disruptive human activity. Most contemporary ecologists, however, conceive of nature as undergoing continual change and find that "flux of nature" is a more accurate and fruitful metaphor than "balance of nature."
The contributors to this volume address how this new paradigm fits into the broader history of ecological science and the cultural history of the West and, in particular, how environmental ethics and ecotheology should respond to it. Their discussions ask us to reconsider the intellectual foundations on which theories of human responsibility to nature are built. The provisional answer that develops throughout the book is to reintegrate scientific understanding of nature and human values, two realms of thought severed by intellectual and cultural forces during the last two centuries.
