Book Description
While Alan Ebenstein's biography of Friedrich Hayek was the first biography of this major twentieth-century thinker, the book itself was not an exploration of his work. Hayek's Journey is the follow-up volume that gives readers an in-depth look at the evolution of Hayek's thought, the influence of the Austrian School of Economics, and the roles of Witt-gen-stein, Freud, and others in his thinking. This is a classic of Hayek scholarship written in lucid prose and a brilliant companion piece to Ebenstein's biography.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as I'd hoped.......2006-11-16
Having read this book without first reading Ebenstein's companion biography on Hayek, perhaps my criticism is not fully warranted, but this book seemed to fall a little short. Hayek is unarguably a fascinating thinker and my hope when picking this up was to learn how that thinking developed: how for example did he wrestle to change from his early socialist leanings when confronted with the problem of economic calculation. There is a lot of interesting factual information to be found in the book, but it is disjointed and ultimately a little frustrating to read. Perhaps Ebenstein's companion biography on Hayak's life reads a little smoother and expresses more of a compelling narrative, and this is just an unfortunate result of a failed biographical mind body split.
All this being said I still think many will still find the book worth a read. There is much to be gained in exploring Hayek - kind of like if I were to take a photograph of a supper model with a point and shoot camera, I'd end up with a picture worth viewing, but not because of my exemplary photographic skills. Eberstein doesn't take the greatest picture of Hayek but based on the merit of the subject I'd still recommend taking a look.
A valuable thematic supplement.......2004-05-18
In this readable volume, Ebenstein offers an overview of Hayek's thought organized thematically rather than chronologically. It is meant as a companion volume to Ebenstein's biography of Hayek, but I read it as a supplement to Caldwell's intellectual biography, Hayek's Challenge.
Being only modestly acquainted with 20th century history, and even less so on economic and political theories, I strongly endorse reading a historical account of Hayek prior to considering this thematic presentation. Hayek was a man of his time, passionately contending with political ideologies and economic centralization that he felt threatened individual liberties. In my view, a historical approach can more aptly express the interplay of social, cultural, and personal influences that shaped Hayek's life and thought.
Be that as it may, Ebenstein has done a fine job in this book. Each chapter is devoted to a specific idea of, or a major influence on, Hayek. Foundational ideas incorporated into Hayek's thought are discussed (Darwinianism, German historicism, Austrian school economics) as are significant works that denoted major changes in his thought. Individual chapters deal with Mises, Keynes, Friedman and Popper, and another contrasts Hayek's thought with Marx, Mill, and Freud. Hayek's major economic thought is address in chapters devoted to both his early years and his later work.
I recommend this book primarily as a ready and current reference for the ongoing debates and interpretations of Hayek. Ebenstein's Bibliographical Essay on the collected works of Hayek may be an essential source for those studying this man.
Another disppointing treatment of Hayek.......2004-01-13
I read Ebenstein's biography of Hayek with high expectations, only to find the work disjointed, inadequate, and incomplete, and I was left with the feeling that either the author did not understand Hayek, had problems expressing himself or did not do adequate research.
When this title hit the bookshops, I immediately purchased a copy thinking that this volume would make up for the inadequacies of the first. But again, I am left with the feeling that a better work on the life and writings of the great Von Hayek is still to be written!
Recommended........2003-10-14
A very good starting point for those who have heard about Hayek and his ideas, but are not ready to jump into the details of his other works. A few well known traders say that to do well in the stock market, one must have a good understanding of the thinking of the Austrian School.
This book summarizes the ideas and discusses his many books, most of which are currently in print. It is written in an easy to read style. It may help you decide which of Hayek's works to read first.
I enjoyed it.
Only goes so far in explaining the genius.......2003-10-13
Frederich Hayek was a genius who happened upon his brilliance by both nature and nurture. He lived in an era which thought it not unusual to work in both the physical and social sciences. In Hayek's case it was most important that his first love was biology since the evolutionary underpinnings of society were fundamental to his approach to the social sciences.
He is today remembered for such classics as THE FATAL CONCEIT, THE CONSTITUTION OF LIBERTY and especially THE ROAD TO SERFDOM. He excelled in many categories and it was this fusion of various fields that made his work so unique and so vital. Starting as a scientist in the tradition of Ernest Mach, he soon began studies in economics, particularly value. From semi-Socialist leanings he became convinced of the link between economic and political freedom. This was the subtext of THE ROAD TO SERFDOM.
His argument against collectivism and central-run economies are as valid today as they were in the early part of last century. Central economies fail because 1) Society has too much knowledge to be centrally commanded (2) all economic decisions become political and thus authoritarian and noncreative and (3) there is no way to set value (price) under Socialism.
THE SENSORY ORDER dealt with epistomology, then he branched out to philosophy and politics. As an example of how Socialist we have become, Hayek's views were called ""liberal" and are now called "conservative" despite the fact that they're unchanged. He wrote one piece "WHY I AM NOT A CONSERVATIVE" which is a clarion call for libertarianism and classical liberalism.
The book examines the clashes between intellectual giants - von Mises, Popper, Mach, Wittgenstein (his cousin) and others. He was a secularist, a capitalist and a political liberal in the classical sense. His work on monetary policy still affects us (adjusting interest rates to increase or decrease the money supply, "floating" currencies externally). His influence with Western politicians and intellectual leaders was and is huge. He won the Nobel Prize for Economics in appreciation for his many contributions.
Almost as an afterward Hayek issued a brilliant statement. The aim of all economists is the increase in material wealth. He wanted this accomplished through an increase in wealth (capitalism) rather than a confiscation / redistribution of wealth (socialism / central run economies). The battle between these two points of view are with us today.

Customer Reviews:
don't hire a p.r. firm...buy this book!.......2002-04-26
This is the how-to book I wish I had written. It's perfect for activists, charities, government agencies, even PTAs! No one can sell an idea or cause better than the person who believes in it--this book gives you the basics and more on how to get your campaign or event in the news.
Helps you get your act noticed!.......2001-12-25
The most difficult task for any activist or organization is getting noticed. With an influx of so many news agencies and mediums it's hard getting noticed by reporters and editors.
This book shows you how to make your cause 'interesting' to those who matter in getting your message across: the Media.
You'll learn how to do several things like give speeches, create an identity, use props & mascots and more.
Although it could have probablly included more in-depth detail and 'how-to' it was certainly worth the investment.
Bottom Line: Worthwhile addition for any activist or their organization. Invaluable for the person in charge of making causes and campaigns noticed!
A must read.......2001-11-13
A must read for any activists. Easy to understand and yet effective.
So impressed I hired the guy.......2000-08-30
Gearing up a new issues education/activist organization, I read this invaluable tome. Then I called its author (Jason Salzman) to find proteges of his whom I might hire on the East Coast. After talking with him over a couple weeks, I hired him and have tremendously benefitted from his experience, wisdom and creativity. Not often we can hire the guy "who wrote the book." If you can't hire him yourself (try though), his book lays out the science and art of garnering media for you to tout your cause.
Everyone in non-profit should read this book.......2000-08-27
Outstanding on all fronts. No jargon - all facts. Salzman shares his secrets and tells you how to figure out making your work into news. In this image-crazed age, this book is a must.

IT'S HELPFUL BUT THE OFFICIAL STRATEGY GUIDE IS INFINITALLY BETTER.......2005-11-12
This book is helpful but it focus too much on the MAP ITSELF ( LIKE THE TITLE SAYS ) :) and it became a little confusing so its better to buy the official strategy guide that not only cover the map part but also the secrets, monsters and lots and lots of hints about the game.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent simple reading.......2007-09-14
I was recommended this book and now I'm recommending it.
This book gives simple guidelines on how to determing what your actual selling figures should be based upon your actual numbers. Good reading for anyone just starting their own business.
How much money do you want to make?.......2004-08-06
If you're new into business or a veteran, this book will answer the question of pricing. So many of us work hard at the wrong price. A clear and understandable method for charging the right price. Thanks!!
A must read for all business owners!.......2004-08-05
As a small business owner I was looking for a book that would assist us in our pricing. "How Much Should I Charge" did just that and more. This book is an excellent tool that brought up expenses we would have never thought of including in our selling price.
A must for all creative people trying to make a living........2004-08-04
Wow !! Finally a helpful book. Being a potter and making each item by hand has always caused me to ask "How much should I charge?". After years of searching for help in this area I came across this wonderful book. Those with MBA's may not need this book, but those of us with BFA's, MFA"s and just plain creative talents will find this book very educational. Ellen's easy reading style and logical approach to pricing makes this book a "must have". Many myths about pricing are pointed out, like charging what every one else does or what the market will bear. If I am to make a living creating handmade items it is important to identify my customer and realize I am not competing with mass produced products. Thank you Ellen for putting me on the road to profitablity.
It could have been different.......2003-05-31
This book is mediocre. The layout is fine, quite attractive. But the contents are obvious. One can hardly believe that somebody needed to write a book about it. There is nearly no insight. Only common sense.
The writer is skilled, she could have made a much better book on a wider subject. But where she stands with this book, it is simply poor. You should read instead her other book which is very good: "Where Did the Money Go?".
Customer Reviews:
Doc continues ministering in his books till Lord's return.......2004-06-20
It is amazing how dense people are - even more incomprehensible how vicious and unloving people are - Dr Eby never said Jesus was coming back during his ( Eby's ) lifetime, Doc claimed that Jesus told him that he would not be able to reach all the people he would like for him to reach before His ( Jesus ) return - Doc Eby is still reaching out to people through the ministry of books and tapes and the Lord of Glory is waiting - delaying - His return out of love and mercy in hope that more of the mean spirited will get to read all of Dr Eby's books and discover what a kind and loving person he was and what a miracle he is in surviving the horrors of this life to live to a ripe old age ! We have much to learn from Doc Eby yet and we need to find some of his videos for duplication and distribution so we can see what he really did have to say ! Full Gospel Business Mens Association may have some of Doc Eby's videos ? Doc Eby is one of the first I wish to meet, after Jesus !
Dr Eby's prophecy did not come to pass..........2004-01-27
Well, at least my prophecy came to pass. I prophesied that Dr Eby was another false prophet. I was correct. Dr Eby got all the hype by stating he would not die before the rapture occured. Well, he's dead and no rapture. Many hardcore Eby-followers claim that he was the modern-day Methuselah, and after his death the rapture would occur. Well, two years have passed and no rapture. Is the rapture coming soon? I think so, but dont believe some date-setting false prophet for an exact time as it is not for us to know the times or seasons.
Go to this website if you want to see how hard core Eby followers are calling dr Eby "Methuselah" out of their own mouths because they love not the truth.

Amazing encounter with Jesus.......2001-08-27
Any encounter with Jesus is amazing to hear. Dr, Eby's message from His encounter with the Lord Himself has greatly encouraged me to get up and work by spreading the gospel. Gosh i never realized it is getting that soon till Jesus returns. The thought of Jesus coming in my lifetime is gas in my engine, In this book, Dr. Eby tells of how he also went to hell and likewise gives an account of his paradise experience when he died temporarily. Amazing book. Another book by Dr.Eby: Didn't you read my book - also tells of the same accounts in even more detail. I like his other book more since it has more content in terms of revalations from Jesus while covering the same encounters.

Primary Sources is an interesting/refreshing approach to history.......2007-10-06
It is nice to see history through the eyes of the people who lived it. I prefer the personal touch of primary sources to traditionally dry textbook accounts.
I don't think it is a book designed to teach history by itself, but should be used in conjunction with lectures/discussions with the professor (as Perry Rogers PhD does in his classes).
Rogers is an historian, not a politician. The beauty of Rogers' approach is that he allows his readers MAKE UP THEIR OWN MINDS by giving us competing ideas from many points of view.
[I used Randall W Smith's review to help me in my review, some direct quotes]
A helpful primary source textbook.......2003-10-28
In my AP European History class, I not only used this book, but had the author as my teacher. Overall, I found the book to be generally enjoyable and easy to read; I even brought it with me to college, heavily highlighted and full of notes, and have actually used it as reference for several class projects (and I attend an engineering school). While some sections of it I consider to be dryer than others, I believe that had more to do with my lack of interest in particular topics than it did the material itself. The chapter introductions and timelines put the material in a good historical context, and the study questions are good food for thought (and helpful for preparing for the AP exam -- in my experience, standardised test questions are seldom worse than anything Perry Rogers can think up). I think it was a great textbook that I would definitely recommend.
Dr. Perry Rogers, Did he skip High School?.......2003-10-07
I Fear this book may be the worst I have ever had the torture of reading. I was adviced to use this terible book in my history class, but after I read it over I would not subject my students to this even if I hated them. Roger's collection of facts and quotes are in some ways intellectual but when he attempts to connect things together with his owns words he destroys everything. Nothing he says seems to make sense, he tends to be all over the page and too opinionated. I am strongly agaisnt the banning of books but for the good of mankind I beg you to extinct this work of crap by Perry Rogers.
A window into the minds that shaped the world........2003-06-26
As a high school teacher, I find Rodger's book a wonderful resource for helping students to see history through the eyes of the people who lived it. The books allow students to get acquainted with historical debates from which we can simulate them in the classroom. Students consistently report that they prefer the personal touch of primary sources to traditionally dry textbook accounts. After finding so much utility in them, I was somewhat surprised to see Rogers chided by so many reviewers. I noticed two dominant themes in these criticisms that warrant attention.
First, that "It's boring & confusing": This assertion reminds me of freshmen whose eyes glaze over when reading anything that contains anything with multiple syllables. Rogers' thesis is that history can only be made intelligible by studying the ideas of the people who shaped it. Those unaccustomed or disinclined from engaging with viewpoints other than their own would naturally take umbrage with his approach. Furthermore, one should not assume that one's own difficulties of understanding are necessarily symptomatic of defects on the part of the author. Serious reading takes time and patience.
Those who can discern no logic to the organization of the collection need only assemble a fuller concept of the history before attempting it. Rogers posits history as a debate between differing points of view. The outcomes of these debates become the dominant institutions and beliefs that define the events of any given period. His selections help us to see that process, from the horse's mouth as they say...
Second, that "Rogers is a Marxist": It is disheartening to see that readers lay the faults of communism on Rogers' doorstep. While certainly one is entitled to despise alternatives to capitalism, one cannot justly dispute that the activities of its opponents have done much to shape history, for good or ill. Rogers is an historian, not a politician. The beauty of Rogers' approach is that he allows his readers MAKE UP THEIR OWN MINDS by giving us competing ideas from many points of view. Of course if a free marketplace of ideas is repugnant to you, it would best to confine yourself to a diet of historical fiction, propaganda and your own writing. After all, wasn't politicizing history the worst mistake Marx ever made?
Loving Perry Rogers.......2003-06-17
While I have had the magnificent ability to have this man as a teacher, I found this book to be incredibly stifling. The contents often made little or no sense and had to be deciphered by the students. The book often seems loosely put together, as if there was no actual intellect used to produce it - as if the book was only published to be published and there is no other reason it should be available to the public. I do not advise anyone to read this book unless you absolutely must. This man obviously has a Napolean complex, and any further production of his books must be immediately halted.
Book Description
In this foundational work in contemporary political theory, William Connolly makes a distinctive contribution to our understanding of the relationship between personal identity and democratic politics, particularly in the domains of religion, ethics, sexuality, and ethnicity. Every identity, Connolly argues, whether individual or social, presents us with a fundamental and troubling paradox: an identity establishes itself in relation to a set of differences, and it operates under powerful pressures to fix, regulate, or exclude some of these differences as otherness. The dignity of a people or political regime, and the quality of democratic culture, depends on the acknowledgment and ethos cultivated in response to these pressures.
In a substantial new essay, Connolly responds to the heated controversy surrounding his ideas when Identity\Difference was first published in 1991, while augmenting his discussion of the virtues of critical responsiveness. The issues of identity and difference cannot be ignored, he contends, and are ubiquitous in modern life.
William E. Connolly is professor and chair of the Department of Political Science at The Johns Hopkins University. His most recent books are Why I Am Not a Secularist (1999) and The Ethos of Pluralization (1995), both published by Minnesota. His work The Terms of Political Discourse won the 1999 Benjamin Lippincott Award.
