5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!.......2006-09-26

What is the greatest gift a father could give his children? Himself, of course. And in his autobiography Paul J. Meyer gives both his children and the rest of us as his readers the gift of himself, the things he learned--and how he learned them. He made his first million dollars by age 27, and lost it by the age of 28--and made it back again many times over. He was, and still is, the youngest insurance agent ever inducted into the million-dollar roundtable, something he accomplished at age 22.

A good friend of mine, Charles "Tremendous" Jones, says that the only people we should take advice from are people who have gone where we want to go and paid the price we're willing to pay. Paul J. Meyer has done that.

He has listened and learned--first from his hardworking immigrant father and mother, and then from his teachers. He made mistakes, many of them, described in this book, but he seldom made the same mistake twice. He learned from each mistake, and that made him a quick learner.

The fortune he inherited was not money, but rather an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and the idea that he could achieve anything he wanted--if he wanted too badly enough. He was raised in a family that was rich in love though not wealthy.

He learned how to make what he needed or to barter for it. He learned to work with his hands first as a field laborer picking fruit, then in rebuilding junk bicycles. In every job he learned something.

Read this book, not because it is a fascinating autobiography, though it is. Read it, rather, because the author provides page after page of step-by-step strategies that any reader can apply to their own life--regardless of situation.

Armchair Interviews says: Great advice all in one place.

I read and re-read this book every chance I get. I bought it from Amazon.com a few months ago and love the historical photos from the 1870s. I also liked the chapter where the author took her young son and retraced Moccasin Joe's footsteps. That was very sweet.

    Book Description

The Adventures of Moccasin Joe: True Life Story of Sgt. George S. Howard, includes the complete translation of Sgt. Howard's diary as he led wagon trains across the Oregon and Bozeman Trails from 1872 to 1877 as a scout for the Second Cavalry, Company E. He hunted bison, elk, deer and antelope to fed his Army unit and fished for 3-pound trout in hundreds of rivers and streams across the state of Nebraska and the territories of Colorado, Wyoming, Dakota and Montana. Sgt. Howard called himself Moccasin Joe but the Shoshone, Sioux and Northern Cheyenne called him Scarhead the Crazy Scout. The book contains chapters on how the author researched his life and how she took her 13-year-old son with her to follow in Moccasin Joe's footsteps in 1990 when Wyoming celebrated its first 100 years as a state. More than 100 never-before-published photographs from the 1870s are included and an extensive annotated bibliography is at the back of the book. The entire book is indexed.

As to say Spike Lee is one-of-a kind director and a good follower. I luv him from the top since he been out. I would actually like to hear more from him 'cuz he's still my top director and mentor. Now back to the movie, I know everybody have love for this flick that Spike Lee created it talks about the life and times of civil rights leader Malcolm X (played by my main man Denzel Washington) which begins on reading the screenplay, the talks about it, the stars who played on the film and to those that believe that believe it out, etc. This is one of my all-time favorite books to read 'cuz it tells it all right here from this movie I like. Anyway it's still my #1 favorite movie of all-time. I look forward for Spike Lee putting out a memoir of his life and where he started his film-playing career into a higher level which drops in Sept or Oct of this yr. Specially look forward of hearing it.

5 out of 5 stars An informative and educational book on an important film........1997-10-12

"By Any Means Necessary" is an excellent book on the making of the film "Malcolm X" by director Spike Lee. Not only do we get a chance to see the film from the director's eye, but we also get to read all of the hassles he had to go through in order to come out with a film in Hollywood. The whole tone of the book, like all of Lee's books on his firms, is that of a diary. So what we're reading is random notes, scribbles, and just little lines that he will remember down the line. It almost seemed like a match made in hell: Spike Lee, considered to be a "controversial" film director, does a film on the line of Malcolm X, considered to be a controversial human rights figure. Throughout the book, Lee has to remind himself that despite the nay-sayers, the film will be done, even at times when he doubts his own creative genius. There are also thoughts from some of the actors (including Denzel Washington, who also played Malcolm X in his early years), but the best words come from Lee

        Book Description

From animal survival to anti-war irony.

Camouflage occurs naturally in the wild as a mechanism of protection and illusion. Learning from nature, military strategists reproduced, painted and printed camouflage patterns to protect equipment and soldiers.

Disruptive Pattern Material is an encyclopedic history of camouflage from its roots in nature, through to its adoption by armed forces and on to its current popularity within modern civilian culture.

The book begins with the wide variety of wildlife that protects itself by blending into the environment. Military camouflage covers the first uses of camouflage to disguise artillery and ships and eventually individual soldiers. A comprehensive, historical guide features the various camouflage patterns issued to soldiers of 107 nations around the world.

The use of camouflage outside of the armed forces first began in the 1960s by anti-war protestors. From there, camouflage was further explored by artists and designers. The book covers the uses of non-military camouflage in:

Featuring 5,000 compelling images by leading photographers, Disruptive Pattern Material is an authoritative reference with fascinating cultural insight.

        5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable--A Publishing Phenomenon.......2004-11-12

This book is not easy to talk about briefly because its contents are so vast. Not only is its page size large, it is also unusually thick, with more than 600 large pages of full-color images and text. It may at first sound pricey, but when you see and hold the physical thing, it's hard to believe that it isn't a lot more expensive. It is, as announced by the subtitle, an encyclopedia of camouflage. But it's far, far more than only that. Only one dimension of it is military, since there are countless examples of pattern disruption in art, nature and culture. This single volume version is a must for anyone who is interested in natural form, the visual arts, deception, mimicry, and pattern play. It will keep you occupied for months. The only thing better that I know of is the two-volume boxed UK edition of the same book in which the second volume is exclusively devoted to camouflage patterns on military uniforms. It is more expensive of course, but it's well worth it, especially for collectors of extraordinary books. For more on that edition, see www.dpmpublishing.com or search the UK Amazon website.

          Book Description

Proving once and for all that standards-compliant design does not equal dull design, this inspiring tome uses examples from the landmark CSS Zen Garden site as the foundation for discussions on how to create beautiful, progressive CSS-based Web sites. By using the Zen Garden sites as examples of how CSS design techniques and approaches can be applied to specific Web challenges, authors Dave Shea and Molly Holzschlag provide an eye-opening look at the range of design methods made possible by CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). By the time you've finished perusing the volume, you'll have a new understanding of the graphically rich, fully accessible sites that CSS design facilitates. In sections on design, layout, imagery, typography, effects, and themes, Dave and Molly take you through every phase of the design process--from striking a sensible balance between text and graphics to creating eye-popping special effects (no scripting required).

.. but I fully expect to. Having followed the csszengarden site from nearly the beginning, I wouldn't miss it. I was learning css on my own when I came across the site.. being a visual artist, and unabashedly a "web DESIGNER" - I finally FINALLY felt that I had found my calling, my mecca on the pages of the site with all of the talented designers.

I learned SO MUCH downloading the css and trying my own stuff -- I actually credit the site for helping me to finally understand css and how it could be stretched - how it could be made to do the things I had always wanted to do. My kudos to everyone involved!

          5 out of 5 stars Perfect!!!.......2007-09-13

I recieved my order fast, the book was in great shape, and wouldn't hesitate to order from amazon! Great service!

5 out of 5 stars The Zen of CSS Design.......2007-07-15

I'm not a "graphics" person. I struggle to understand creative design and how to build it in code. This book brought these elements together and really explained the process.

This is not a beginner's book on coding and design. It is more of an applications manual for someone who has worked with CSS. I was frequently looking at some area of a design and asking myself how, or why, did he do that? I don't think there was ever an example that left that question unanswered. If it wasn't explicit, there was always enough information and discussion to be able to figure it out. Including the code with the illustrations and explanations really tied the processes together.

This book will be kept on my 'A' references shelf. There is a detailed index and the example home pages were grouped in sections: Design, Layout, Imagery, Typography, Special Effects, and Reconstruction. Therefore, it will be easy to come back and locate relevant information.

A great book with excellent examples and descriptions on how to implement a CSS web solution.

This book is fantastic for layouts and suggestions. While it is not the simplist thing for the beginner it is very good for layouts and suggestions on ways to make your own CSS better and HTML lighter.

          Book Description

The definitive, unauthorized biography of Jeff Beck! This well-researched, enlightening book positions Jeff Beck's astonishing achievements - like the pioneering of feedback - within the musical climate of the times. Chronicling his incarnations before and with the Yardbirds, the Jeff Beck Group and beyond, the book describes in detail: Beck's favored Fender guitars; passion for hot rods; relationships with Rod Stewart, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy and other artists; love of rockabilly; recording collaborations ranging from Donovan to Tina Turner; landmark solo and instrumental work; and much more. Includes a wealth of personal, musical and historical detail, great photos, and a comprehensive discography.

5 out of 5 stars Jeff Beck ! The World's Greatest Living Guitarist !.......2006-04-20

Annette Carson's incisive, comprehensive and interesting Jeff Beck biography, unveils the reasons why Jeff Beck is so enigmatic. Even though Brian May, David Gilmour, Slash, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page have stated that Jeff Beck is the greatest living guitarist, he remains relatively obscure. This is because he prefers working on hot rods amidst his majestic British estate that is home to countless dogs, cats and Mr. Beck's female companion. However, Beck's volatile and magnificent music career is thoroughly covered by the author. She does a great job via enumerating all the guest appearances Jeff Beck has made on other artists albums. It is amazing how ageless Jeff Beck is and his last three albums are just as spellbinding as "Blow By Blow" and "Wire". He can perform a 110 minute captivating concert without a vocalist and without saying a word to the audience. It was interesting to learn that Jeff Beck has been vegetarian since the late 1960's and that he recorded an animal rights song titled "Skin Thieves". It is no surprise that Jeff Beck is Chrissie Hynde's and Brian May's guitar hero.

5 out of 5 stars The Original Beck.......2004-09-17

If you want to read about drugs, groupies and gossip, don't buy this book. Although Jeff Beck has influenced countless guitarists for the last 40 years, the average person doesn't recognize his name. He always preferred to restore his collection of antique cars, instead of recording new albums or touring. In my opinion, he is probably the most versatile and innovative electric guitarist ever recorded. Beck has played on sessions for artists including Tina Turner, Stanley Clark, Mick Jagger, Paul Rodgers, Jon Bon Jovi, Wynonna Judd, Chrissie Hynde, Donovan, and Stevie Wonder. His solo albums have always broken new ground and his playing has never gotten stagnant. Beck's only weakness has been choosing inferior songs to fill out his albums. Carson describes one incident when Beck seriously injured his thumb while working on one of his cars. Instead of immediately going to a doctor, he fell asleep and was fortunate not have had any permanent damage done to his hand.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy, Man, Crazy!!!.......2004-03-11

Crazy Fingers, Annette Carson's outstanding book about that guitar icon known as Jeff Beck, is not filled with stories of sex and drugs, debauchery, or other tabloid trash. Instead, the author focuses her energy on the man and his music. Gearheads will love this book because she includes lots of talk about GUITARS (Mr. Beck plays the git fiddle, doncher know?): How Jeff acquired them, modified them to suit his taste, which guitar he uses on which numbers, and some general discussion about how he gets his different effects. But make no mistake. If you do not actually play guitar or indeed any musical instrument, you will still be pleased by Carson's breezy, very readable writing style (sometimes including her own wry commentary on certain albums; for example, she ranks Paul Rodgers seminal classic roots album Muddy Water BLues, a disc where Beck guested on three tracks, much higher than the original newspaper reviewer.). Plenty of information is also included about Jeff's formative years, his relationships and family life, and most important, his career from Yardbird demigod to jazz-rock heavy, and his relations with peers and backup musicians (including several discussions on his hot/cold friendship with fellow Jeff Beck Group alum Rod Stewart.) Jeff even finally answers the lingering "Spinal Tap" question himself: Is he or is he not the model for Nigel Tufnel, wildman guitarist extraordinaire in the cult classic movie This Is Spinal Tap? (Hint: Jeff LOVES classic cars, and Nigel is seen during one scene in the film reading a hot rod magazine. Hmmmmm!) In short, an excellent, informative read, great for musicians and non-musicians alike, and one which will deepen your understanding of the crazy man that is guitar legend Jeff Beck. As Bill Haley once said: "Crazy, Man, Crazy!!!"

5 out of 5 stars A well balanced history of the Guv'nor.......2003-05-02

Having been a massive fan of the great one since 1965, I was pleasantly suprised to read the many stories behind his more published achievements and musical milestones. A nicely assembled biography with a good balance of interview clips (many humorous), technical guitar talk and tons of tales surrounding sessions, performances, misunderstandings, artistic dilemas and so on. Annette has done a good job of focusing on what's important about this treasure of a guitarist. A discography and many good photos round out the book. What came over most strongly was just how much this man is respected and how he has largely avoided compromise. Most fans will find new and little known facts in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good recent coverage.......2002-09-25

"Crazy Fingers" suffers from a disease in common with most unauthorized biographies, in that endless personal gushes combined with magazine interview snippets don't make up for the lack of in-depth access to the subject. However, it is a comprehensive look at Jeff's career, and fortunately gives equal press to early, mid-year and recent history, all the way up through Guitar Shop. Nice binding, too.

          Book Description

In 1978, James MacGregor Burns published Leadership, his seminal examination of how leaders shape the course of history by transforming followers into creative new leaders. The book quickly became the cornerstone of the emerging field of leadership studies, which has spawned over nine hundred academic programs as well as leadership programs in business and government. Now, twenty-five years later, Burns expands the subject, offering a new vision—Transforming Leadership—focusing on the ways that leaders emerge from being ordinary "transactional" brokers and deal makers to become true agents of principled social change who empower their followers to achieve freedom and happiness.

As a historian, Burns illuminates the evolution of leadership structures, from the chieftainships of tribal African societies, through Europe's absolute monarchies, to the blossoming of the Enlightenment vision of liberty that came to full flower with the Declaration of Independence's "Pursuit of Happiness." Along the way he looks at key moments in leadership—including both great triumphs and grand failures—in men and women, from African leaders to Elizabeth I, James Madison, Napoleon, Mao, Gandhi, and many others. The book culminates in a bold and innovative plan to address the greatest global leadership challenge of the twenty-first century: the seemingly intractable problem of global poverty.

Engagingly written, original, and provocative, Transforming Leadership is a powerful book that will fire controversy and conversation in classrooms and boardrooms throughout the country.

1 out of 5 stars Is the author too intelligent?.......2005-08-28

This book was one of the textbooks for an honors leadership course I took in college. I absolutely hated it. The concepts were interesting but the language was too hard to follow. I felt inferior as I was reading this book, which is not aomething an author should strive to achieve.
Although, as I stated above, the author had interesting ideas and concepts, there was one thing that I had a tough time swallowing. The author argues that there is no such thing as a "bad leader". Instead, if you are not a good leader, you are not a leader. I strongly disagree with this idea, as an individual can be a leader but not a good one. I'm sure that most people can think of someone in their life that they would categorize as a "bad leader".
I will never recommend this book, nor will I ever purchase or read another book written by this author.

5 out of 5 stars Good News: It's Possible; Bad News: Not With Today's Lot.......2003-07-26

This is quite a fine book. It will be especially valuable to that very rare breed of all-source intelligence analyst, those responsible for analyzing foreign leaders, and completely fed up with the sterile "biographic" analysis that lists job titles and honors. The author expands substantially on the very immature but promising field leadership analysis by discussing in detail the concepts and practices of "traits-based" or "value" leadership.

The author, himself already established as one of the best writers about leaders and leadership, breaks new ground in exploring the psychology of leadership, and creating a new inter-disciplinary and psychologically-rooted approach to understanding leadership at the national, organizational, and personal levels. He concludes that transformative leadership is all too rare; that it can redirect the fate of nations (Ghandi stands out as an exemplar), and that nurturing true transformative leadership rather than mere industrial-era task-mandating and monitoring leadership, is the core competency for navigating into the 21st Century.

The author is especially brutal when his idea are applied to the charismatic or ideologically-purified forms of leadership that pass for Presidential politics today. "At best, charisma is a confusing and undemocratic form of leadership. At worst, it is a form of tyranny."

He spends a great deal of time examining the founding fathers of America and the process by which they defined both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitute, and his findings are quite remarkable (especially in light of recent attempts by Republicans in Texas and in the House of Representives to totally silence Democrats and override dissenting votes without voice):

          1) The minority is an absolutely essential part of collective learning and the great dialog that leads to sound decisions. Repressing the minority is a prescription for disaster.

          2) The pursuit of happiness, rather than property, was very deliberately selected by the founding fathers in order to focus on human values and collective learning, rather than property rights.

          3) Rebellion from time to time is a feature, not a fault. "...the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants" per John Adams. He specifically focuses on the importance of the loyal opposition as a means of enabling principled change by the majority in the cauldron of informed debate.

          4) The right to abolish the U.S. Government is specifically reserved to the American people. The author notes that absolutist ideas inspire revolt, crowds have immeasurable power, and narrow ideologies with ritual tests of orthodoxy are an invitation to popular revolution.

After reviewing a number of leaders across history, the author quotes Roosevelt, who said "Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob" and then sets the stage for his concluding section, which suggests that leaders must embrace deep values that accept the happiness of the people as the ultimate challenge for the community, that they must empower followers rather than merely engage them, and that the ultimate challenge for all leaders of all nations and organizations is global poverty and the need to eradicate global poverty if billions are to find some semblance of happiness (and implicitly, stability that reduces the threat to the United States and Europe).

He quotes others in emphasizing that men in fear or want are not free men; that technology and money is not the answer to poverty, only values and liberation from fear and want, and--his final word, it the end it must be a "great people" rather than a "great man" that rises to the global challenge.

America! A Whole Earth. We can only imagine...

In the 19th century, when the idea of eugenics (selective breeding to generate superior members of a species) was invited off the farm and into the parlor, it was a far-fetched notion with little possibility of success driven by clearly racist motivations. But at the end of the 20th century, biotechnological techniques and other agendas are making forms of human eugenics plausible. Rich in anecdote, narrative, and fact. An important book.

          Book Description

Daniel Kevles traces the study and practice of eugenics--the science of "improving" the human species by exploiting theories of heredity--from its inception in the late nineteenth century to its most recent manifestation within the field of genetic engineering. It is rich in narrative, anecdote, attention to human detail, and stories of competition among scientists who have dominated the field.

5 out of 5 stars Interested in U.S. eugenics movement, must have this book!.......2001-07-16

...This was one of the most widely recommended and referenced books by those who disagree or agree with the eugenics movement in the United States. Those who lambasted the scientific idiots running the eugenics movement as being prejudiced and biased in their science, lauded this book as one of the most complete of all recent books written on this topic. Those who support the motives behind eugenics, fixed upon this particular book and author as the one they needed to tear apart. That gives readers an idea of how accurately Kelves pushed the buttons of those who would practice eugenics, euthanasia, doctor-assisted suicide, and other such controversial practices. Kelves research job is outstanding, and even though the reader can tell the opinion of Kevles from the way he writes, he certainly more than backed up his writing with pertinent references and cross-references.

In fact, I enjoyed reading his references and bibliography, because it was just loaded with information that he chose not to use in the text of his book. I also tend to go searching through his index and references for extra information because of all of the books I've read on eugenics here in the U.S. his is the most valid and inclusive of everything I've seen so far. This is a topic which is very difficult to read, let alone write about, without developing very strong opinions not only of the movement itself, but of the people involved one way or another in this particular stain on American history. See...I cannot even keep my own mouth shut for writing a short review on a book on the topic...I cannot imagine researching it for a period of years and being expected to remain distant and objective about it. Kevles does a relatively good job presenting the facts and not becoming too strident about the questionable scientific practices which flourished in order to 'prove' preconceived ideas and beliefs. The book is extremely readable (especially compared to most textbooks for sociology or ethics), and I can understand why professors would recommend this book to their students rather than reading a dry textbook. I certainly have no plans to get rid of my copy, and I will be lending it out and recommending it to those I teach concerning the disabled and bioethics. ...

4 out of 5 stars Excellent history of Eugenics.......2001-04-28

Kevles is a very clear and thorough writer. I have read other articles by him as well as this book, and he presents the history of eugenics and its modern possiblities with a readablility that will be clear to anyone, even w/o a sciene background. The book does cover a lot of information, but is enjoyable. If you have an interest in the possibilities regarding the use of genetic knowledge, this book is worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars I had to read it for school........2000-05-11

I had to read it for school... I am a college freshman...in my Sociology class we had to choose a book off of a reading list to report on.

Remembering the mention of Eugenics in High School Biology, and remembering my odd fascination with genetics and hereditiy, I thought I'd give this book a try. I was fully ready to embark on a difficult and heavy book that discussed scientific matter that went over my head (being a film student, eugenics doesn't come up very often.) Much to my surprise I found the book very readable, and I became obsessed with reading it. Everything about the whole eugenics scene was so complex and intereting.

I think I could keep up with it all because of the way the author presented the subject. It was laid out so that a person (like me) who knew next to nothing about eugenics, could pick up the book and get a history of the people and the practices of genetics and the uses of human heredity. I recommend it to anyone who is somewhat interested in eugenics, but does not have the background or time to devote life study to it. It satisfied my curiosities and my book report! :)

5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Study of Eugenics.......2000-02-25

Daniel Kevles's In the Name of Eugenics is a thoughtful, well-written look at the eugenics movement of the early twentieth century. In an extremely readable manner, Kevles has produced a most accessible and informative study of eugenics that will be of interest to people with various amounts of knowledge of the field. Kevles meticulously examines the lives of the eugenicists as well as the many implications of eugenics in American society. This book is invaluable to anyone studying eugenics and is a great resource.

1 out of 5 stars Biased view of an important subject.......1999-11-03

The book attempts to point to some of the abuses of eugenics in the past in an attempt to discredit modern scientific views of the inheritance of traits in particular the inheritance of intelligence. The inheritance of intellectual ability was irrefutably demonstrated by Hernstein and Murray in their seminal work "The Bell Curve". Ever since the publication of this work there has been a steady stream of the most banal and unscientific writings attempting to refute its authority and conclusions. Although the "History of Eugenics" was written before "The Bell Curve" was published it nevertheless enjoys the attention of such notable leftists as Jay Gould who have taken it upon themselves to mount a relentless campaign to discredit Hernstein and Murray's work.

The words of praise of Kevle's book by Jay Gould which appear on its back cover is particularly disingenuous since the author praises Mr. Gould in the book. But praising those that agree with him and criticizing and demonizing those that don't is the author's as well as Mr. Gould's style. So there is nothing new here.

Apart from the author's small contribution towards work on the history of eugenics there is really very little to recommend this book to anyone interested in an objective treatment of this important subject.

                  Book Description

Nondestructive Biomarkers in Vertebrates presents an innovative approach for hazard assessment in vertebrates based on nondestructive rather than destructive methods. The book reviews the state of the art and defines the development and validation procedure of this new strategy. Biological materials, such as blood samples, epithelial tissue, eggs, feathers, and feces that can be obtained without stress or damage to the animal are suggested. Certain traditional studies (blood esterases, blood chemistry, mixed function oxidases, porphyrins, DNA damage, and cytological changes) can be performed on these specimens, along with new tests requiring only very small samples. This approach is developed to benefit protected, threatened species whose existence cannot be further jeopardized by the use of destructive methods. This volume will be particularly useful to ecotoxicologists, wildlife protection personnel, environmental consultants, and conservationist organizations.
