Good exposition of these publicity-shy builders........2005-03-02
After reading this very creditable biography I donated it to the local public library.
I recall many rather cryptic remarks made by my grandmother years ago during Sunday trips to Cleveland about the Public Square and the Terminal Tower. She remembered the Mall project and other aspects of Cleveland that were obscure even in the fifties. These rather hazy recollections have now been re-examined inder the considerable light that Mr. Harwood has brought to the Van Sweringen brothers who were averse to publicity, even though they figured so much in the development of Cleveland in the 20th century. And their reach went far beyond that--these facts were not widely known. Excellent source.
The Book I wanted to write.......2004-03-22
I grew up on the border of Cleveland Heights/Shaker Heights off Fairmount Blvd.A gradeschool classmate was Bernie Bernet. As a boy I rode my bicycle over to Shaker Blvd. to watch the Rapids go by. AtCWRU a colleague was Ian Haberman and my fellow members of NORM are Tolman and Wayne Hayes. I walked the East Cleveland Rapid line when it still stood empty. I was making notes for this history in about 1950. Except for the buying and selling of the various railroads, this book is a part of my life. I know every inch of it and except for a very few very tiny slips (in the maps mostly)it is a masterpiece. And the very book itself, without the contents, is a first class production.
An excellent read........2003-09-07
I read a lot of books on train history. Once I started this one I could not put it down. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in railroad history during the glory days.

In this affectionate look at Muhammad Ali, Thomas Hauser makes a good case that Ali might be the most loved person in the world. Certainly, it's difficult to think of an athlete who is more revered, as Ali's appearance at the 1996 Olympics demonstrated. Muhammad Ali in Perspective is illustrated with hundreds of photographs, many by longtime Ali photographer Howard Bingham. It is a stunning look at a man who was not only one of the best fighters and athletes ever, but who also showed the courage of his convictions when he refused to register for the draft and transcended his sport to become a world spokesman for human rights.

Another Hauser Winner and A Great Ali Perspective.......2004-06-06
Another Hauser Winner and A Great Ali Perspective
After the epilogue I read the Fight Chronology, glanced at the index and acknowledgements and realized I was done. I closed the book and felt sad that my time being spent with Ali was over for today. I flipped the book over and there he was on the cover. Older than I remembered, but still handsome and still a twinkle in his eye.
I don't know how Hauser always seems to do it, he always seems to make me forget about the world around me and just become part of his writing.
This is a great book - if you've read other Ali books or if his is your first - it's a great, easy book that simply shows you different perspectives on the GREATEST Of All Time - Muhammad Ali.
I laughed out loud a lot and got all teary eyed at times as well.
Great book - Great photos - Very hard to find - one of those you'll have to buy used on Amazon or find on eBay - do yourself a favor - find it and spend an afternoon with it.
good book.......2003-12-06
I think the book is excellent, after all I happened to be in the book with muhammed ali, as one of his fans. I think its on page 42. we're in a cadillac surrounding him.
wonderful pictorial of the champ.......1998-12-11
This book is a wonderful pictorial of Ali's life and times, triumphs and defeats, both personal and professional. A must for any fan of Ali or the triumph of spirit over surroundings.
The book shows Ali to be what he is,The greatest of all time.......1997-10-03
From the pictures to the text, Hauser shows Ali in all his greatness. The pictures are captivating and the text allows the reader to experience what Ali has to offer. "In Perspective" allows everyone from the common sports fan all the way to the boxing expert the chance to step into the life of Muhammed Ali.

Book Description
With his complex and unconventional films, Robert Altman often draws an impassioned response from critics but bafflement and indifference from the general public. Some audiences have dismissed his movies as insignificant, unsatisfying, and unreadable. Ironically, Altman might agree: he makes films in order to challenge filmgoers' expectations of straightforward narratives and easily understood endings.
In Subliminal Reality, Robert T. Self sheds light on Altman's work and provides the most comprehensive analysis of his films to date. With close readings of classics like MASH, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, and Nashville, and more recent films like The Player, Short Cuts, and Cookie's Fortune, Self asserts the value of Altman's work not only to film theory and the entertainment industry, but to American culture itself.
In his analysis, Self identifies Altman's films particularly as they address issues of form, identity, and industry. He explains how Altman critiques moviemaking forms by using an open, fragmented mode of storytelling and by turning conventional Hollywood genres inside out. He examines Altman's characterization of social and individual identity as fragile and fragmentary and his depiction of antiheroic characters debilitated by their socially constructed gender roles. Finally, Self shows how Altman challenges the entertainment industry itself, questioning its methods and motives and critiquing its role in our cultural alienation.
Self frames his analysis of Altman's work with a discussion of the director's efforts to create a "subliminal reality" in his narratives-to touch audiences on an unconscious level and to recognize the unspoken, and unspeakable, dimensions in human interactions. According to Self, this striving for "subliminal reality" makes Altman's films not only exemplary of the potential of art cinema narration, but instrumental in keeping such narrative alive.
Robert T. Self is professor of English at Northern Illinois University.

Coffeetable book "lite".......2005-04-10
The value of this little book is in its photos, which are fun to look at. It offers a very light look at each show profiled, with just a little information. It's a book for fun, not a reference book. The information is arranged chronologically, though the layout and design can be confusing if you're searching through it for a particular program.
Not worth it.......2003-08-14
Luckily I bought this book used and didn't pay full price for it or I would have been extremely upset. It's nothing more than a small picture book with some very obvious blurbs about the tv shows it covers. There's nothing new or insightful in most of the blurbs. The so-called timeline is confusing, because for many shows listed it's not clear what year they're talking about. It also omits a lot of shows and there's no rhyme or reason as to why some shows are in the book and some shows are not. I don't recommend it.
TV MANIA.......2000-06-25
PERHAPS THE GREATEST BOOK THAT I HAVE SEEN WITH REFERENCE TO THE TV SHOWS THAT INFLUENCED MY LIFE. THE NOSTALGIA AND PICTORIAL DISPLAY OFFERED MANY WARM MEMORIES AND HUMORISTIC REFERENCES. WELL DONE, NOT OVERDONE.... BRAVO
Great read, but left many shows out.......1999-09-15
I really had a wonderful time reading through "TV Mania", but I realized there were several shows which made an impact on America that were not listed in the timeline: what about "Mr. Peepers"?
TV LOVERS ALERT!!!!!.......1999-02-03
What a wonderful and loving book that chronicles tv from the beginning. The book is a treasure to hold. If you love tv you must not miss this.

OK Beginner Puzzle Book. .......2004-12-24
You get 100 puzzles with solutions in the back of the book. Puzzles are from recent (2000-2003) named tournament games. Puzzles 1-29 are easy Mate in 1. Most of the rest are Mate in 2 moves, some easy, some slightly harder. This is a beginner puzzle book which requires only basic chess knowledge. I found 1 error in solution # 45; otherwise this book is well done. I think the only issue I have with this book is there is only one puzzle per page. It could have easily been at least 2 per page for a better value.
Book Description
In writing this textbook, Mankiw has tried to put himself in the position of someone seeing economics for the first time. The author's conversational writing style is superb for presenting the politics and science of economic theories to tomorrow's decision-makers. Because Mankiw wrote it for the students, the book stands out among all other principles texts by intriguing students to apply an economic way of thinking in their daily lives. Receiving such a praise as "perhaps the best ever" textbook in economic principles, it's no wonder Mankiw's prize project has quickly become one of the most successful books ever to be published in the college marketplace.
Customer Reviews:
Solid introductory text for students and general readers.......2004-08-23
This very readable book is a subset of the chapters included in Prof. Mankiw's "Principles of Economics". That book has thirty-six chapters in thirteen parts. This has eighteen chapters in eight parts. Parts one and two are common to both editions. This one excludes the discussion of microeconomics in parts three through seven, but has the rest of the chapters in parts eight through fifteen.
It is much more manageable for a one term introductory course in macroeconomics. However, do not confuse this introductory text with the more mathematically rigorous book Macroeconomics that is also authored by Mankiw. However, if you want to be an econometrician, neither text is probably enough to get you where you need to be to launch into those studies.
This book has a lot of strengths for those who want to develop some intuitions about economic thought and who may not have the mathematics necessary for a more rigorous treatment of the subject. However, the foundation it will give you will be sound and ecumenical enough to allow you to take on further studies in various branches of macroeconomics that have a more defined theology on the role of government in the economy.
Simply put, the best economics textbook on the market.......2004-08-09
"Brief Principles of Macroeconomics" is identical to Mankiw's "Principles of Macroeconomics," except that 5 chapters on mainly microeconomic topics have been deleted. These five chapters cover elasticity, price controls, consumer & producer surplus, taxation, and international trade. Most college macro courses do not cover these topics, so students can save a few bucks by purchasing this "Brief" version.
For 10 years, I have taught intro-level economics courses at a university. I have used a variety of books, and read many others (to steal their best ideas and examples for my teaching!). Mankiw is the one I like best.
More importantly, Mankiw is the one my students consistently like best. I often survey students near the end of the semester about their satisfaction with different aspects of the textbook, including: clarity, brevity, real-world relevance, effective layout & use of color, quality of the diagrams, and so forth. I tell my students not to sign their survey - I want their responses to be anonymous and completely candid. I tell students "If this book doesn't work for you, PLEASE tell me so that I can use a better one for my next batch of students."
More than any other textbook I've used, Mankiw's Economics textbook gets the highest student ratings in every category.
It might also be helpful for you to know about the difficulty level of Mankiw. I would describe it as average. For comparison, I would describe the following as above average difficulty level: Stockman, Stiglitz, Baumol/Blinder, Case/Fair, and Parkin. I would describe these books as below average difficulty level: Tucker, Miller, Bade/Parkin, Boyes/Melvin, and O'Sullivan/Sheffrin. I think the difficulty level of Mankiw is roughly comparable to that of Schiller, Colander, McConnell/Brue, and McEachern.
Despite that Mankiw is merely "average" difficulty level, it maintains a fairly good degree of analytical rigor.
Also, the writing style is student-friendly (but definitely not too informal), and, unlike other textbooks, Mankiw avoids introducing a lot of terms that won't be important for anything later in the book. The layout is attractive, yet clean and uncluttered, with lots of space in the margins for students to jot notes if they wish. Students find the end-of-chapter exercises very helpful.
The most distinguishing characteristic of the macroeconomics chapters is Mankiw's innovative approach. He first covers long-run topics: What determines a country's standard of living in the long run? What is the cause of the long-run upward trend in the cost of living? Why is there unemployment when things are "normal" (i.e. not a recession)? And many others (including saving, investment, the government budget deficit, the trade balance - all things you hear about on the evening news every day).
Then, he turns to short-run issues, such as recessions and booms.
Why treat the long run first? Because it's easier to learn the short-run analysis after students have learned the long-run equilibrium around which the economy fluctuates. (Also, there is much more agreement in the profession about the long-run analysis, whereas there's a fair amount of controversy over some of the details of the short-run analysis.)
How is this approach received? Very well, as evidenced by the fact that many other textbooks have copied it AFTER Mankiw first popularized it with the first edition of his Principles book, and before that, the first edition of his excellent intermediate macroeconomics textbook.
Mankiw is a superstar in the profession - and outside of it, as well. President Bush tapped him to be the Chairperson of the President's Council of Economic Advisors, and Mankiw briefs the President once or twice every week (in addition to many other important responsibilities.)
Despite working for a Republican Administration, Mankiw presents a very balanced treatment of economics in his textbooks (and I am telling you this as a Democrat). In fact, Mankiw prefers GOOD ideas, whether Republican or Democrat. For example, he recently argued for a gas tax increase to encourage conservation, and suggested the revenue be given back to consumers in the form of an income tax cut. Mankiw clearly does not just "push the Party line." This is integrity.
The company that publishes Mankiw's Principles of Economics textbooks, Thomson/South-Western, invests a lot of resources into continually improving this book. Compared to any other textbook publisher I know, they hire more student and teacher reviewers and devote more time and effort and money into obtaining, processing, and incorporating critical user feedback so that each edition, and accompanying supplements, are the very best they can be.
All in all, I readily recommend Mankiw's Brief Principles of Macroeconomics textbook.
Does a good job for its objective.......2004-07-13
The book attempts to teach a reasonable mainstream core of macroeconomics and its basic models. The writing style is very good. For those who are looking for a broad discussion of policy issues, this may not be the book for them. However, the book is intended for first year college economics students and the need for them to understand a few consensus macroeconomic concepts and models so that they can apply those models and concepts to policy issues after they leave the course. A good example of putting the cart before the horse is the comment by a reviewer who thought the book had a liberal bent. Of course, we all now know that N. Gregory Mankiw is the head of President Bush's Council of Economic Advisers (not exactly a recommendation for becoming a card carrying liberal). And that's the danger of reviewing introductory economics textbooks on the basis of an illusory political intent. The books most often ought to be rated on their objective--presenting a few models and techiniques to the student who will most often not take another formal economics course. Don't dismiss the book because it isn't steeped in political pronouncements. Check it out for technical useability and its writing clarity. You might like it.
Don't look at those lib'ruls, children -- move along now.......2003-12-26
A nice intro, but as noted by another reviewer, very short shrift given to other schools of economic thought. A recommended reading list gives plenty of well-respected conservative writers, with Milton Friedman topping the list, but only Paul Krugman appears representing other thoughts, and he's singled out as a "liberal economist". I think there are somewhat more honest introductions to the subject.
Some good, some poor.......2002-06-24
Mankiw's book has a good organization -- for what it has. He spends a lot of time laying out some key fundamental topics, such as unemployment, GDP, CPI, DJIA, and so forth.
However, his book is entirely mum on the fact that there are different schools of thought, e.g., Keynesians, Classicals, Monetarists, Austrians, etc. A reader comes away thinking that all economists agree with Mankiw, and that simply is not true. Many other principles-level economics books have specific chapters devoted to these schools of thought.
In my Macro classes, I put Mankiw on "reserve" in the library and suggest that students read the 5 chapters dealing with "The Data of Macroeconomics" and "The Real Economy in the Long Run." However, I use other text books for the rest of the course, since they explain why economists disagree, give better information about actual public policy issues, and help a student understand, e.g., what the federal reserve is doing, or why some politicians like deficit spending and others dislike it, or whether the trade deficit is important or not.
For a reader who merely wants to understand the core issues mentioned above, Mankiw is a good book which I highly recommend. For a reader who wants to understand the nature of the public policy debates over these core issues, Mankiw is a horrible book which I suggest that you avoid like the plague.
Book Description
'Someone has said that when you have nothing left but God, you realize that God is enough. God had stood beside me when no one else wanted me. He was not going to abandon me now. God would have to heal the emotional pain that throbbed through my body.' As a child, Dorie was rejected by her mother, sent to live in an orphanage where she was regularly beaten by the orphanage director, was beaten time and again by cruel foster parents, and was daily told that she was ugly and unlovable. Dorie never knew love until a group of college students visited the orphanage and told her that God loved her. As she accepted that love, her life began to change. Dorie is the thrilling, true account of what God's love can do in a life. Doris Van Stone takes readers through the hard years of her childhood into her fascinating years as a missionary with her husband to the Dani tribe in New Guinea. With the rise of illegitimate births, the increase in divorce statistics, and the frightening escalation of child abuse, this story stands as a reminder that God's love, forgiveness, and grace are greater than human hurt and sorrow.A loving reminder that God's love, forgiveness and grace are greater than human hurt and sorrow. There is more!.......2000-11-09
Dorie has been a very very good friend of mine for the past 15 years. The story of her early life is true and tragic, but the second book, No Place to Cry fills in the blanks in the first book. Dorie, The Girl Nobody Loved was published before anyone wrote autobiographically about sexual abuse. As Dorie has courageously opened these chapters of her life, so has the Lord opened her world wide ministry of speaking. She has been 12 times around the world telling of the sexual abuse, the damage of shame and the way the Lord has brought change in her life by facing the past. I often tell her that her book needs to be renamed, The Woman Everybody Loves. She is loved and is hugged by more people than could ever be counted. She is truly a picture of the grace of God and the fact that He delights in taking what others meant for evil and turning it into good.
You have got to read this book.......2000-09-07

Tragedy a reality.......2000-01-09
This book is reveting! Doris VanStone really takes you into her life and makes you feel the victimization in your soul. Great example of how God can help victims overcome the post-traumatic stress that is very real in their conscious and unconscious mind.
Great So Far..........1998-11-14
I have to read this book for school and it's very entertaining. "Dorie" really is an emotional book and it hurts me to read how badly she was treated. her own mother even treated her wrong. Read this book for Christian inspiration.
Jesus said, suffer the little children to come unto me........1998-08-05
This book is about a little girl who was abused and mistreated by the many adults in her life. She came to God as a child and grew in Him despite the horrible rejection that she faced as a child. She became a missionary and suffered even more but it was for the cause of Christ this time. After her missionary life abroad, she came to America with her husband and children and gave talks dealing with her life as a child and a missionary. This book was introduced to me as a child and I have read it many times afterwards. God called me to be a missionary through her writings and the missionary works of others. I too felt that I was a girl nobody loved but God showed me something different-our sufferings are not in vain and that our prayers don't go unanswered.
Book Description
"The diplomatic origins, so-called, of the War are only the fever chart of the patient; they do not tell us what caused the fever. To probe for underlying causes and deeper forces one must operate within the framework of a whole society and try to discover what moved the people in it."
--Barbara W. Tuchman
The fateful quarter-century leading up to the World War I was a time when the world of Privilege still existed in Olympian luxury and the world of Protest was heaving in its pain, its power, and its hate. The age was the climax of a century of the most accelerated rate of change in history, a cataclysmic shaping of destiny.
In The Proud Tower, Barbara Tuchman concentrates on society rather than the state. With an artist's selectivity, Tuchman bings to vivid life the people, places, and events that shaped the years leading up to the Great War: the Edwardian aristocracy and the end of their reign; the Anarchists of Europe and America, who voiced the protest of the oppressed; Germany, as portrayed through the figure of the self-depicted Hero, Richard Strauss; the sudden gorgeous blaze of Diaghilev's Russian Ballet and Stravinsky's music; the Dreyfus Affair; the two Peace Conferences at the Hague; and, finally, the youth, ideals, enthusiasm, and tragedy of Socialism, epitomized in the moment when the heroic Jean Jaurès was shot to death on the night the War began and an epoch ended.
"Tuchman [was] a distinguished historian who [wrote] her books with a rare combination of impeccable scholarship and literary polish. . . . It would be impossible to read The Proud Tower without pleasure and admiration."
--The New York Times
"Tuchman proved in The Guns of August that she could write better military history than most men. In this sequel, she tells her story with cool wit and warm understanding, eschewing both the sweeping generalizations of a Toynbee and the minute-by-minute simplicisms of a Walter Lord."
--Time

Forceful and Mostly Brilliant .......2007-09-25
Barbara Tuchman's work shows her brilliance as an historian. Having read nearly all of her works, this one is less a linear narrative than a non-linear analysis of events that intertwined at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Some of the efforts, frankly, put me to sleep. The events in the English parliament seemed to wander and reduce to a game that had no purpose. I found myself finally skipping pages. The analysis of Richard Strauss, while interesting in places, left me wondering whether Ms. Tuchman simply threw in the biography because it coincided with the times.
However, her analysis of the Anarchists and the Socialsts, of the Dreyfus Affair, of the rise of German militarism, of young American muscle-flexing and of the tremors of future seismic activity were masterful. Each patch on this quilt gave me the sense that the ignorance of, or ideological hope for, the future led us into the worst of all possible worlds. It was clear, from a distance, that the most violent convulsions were about to envelop the world.
This book sat on my bookshelf for years. I am glad I pulled it out. As I read it, I found myself finding parallel arrogance with current events --- with terrorism, with fear of outside culture, with the loss of comfort.
It's well worth reading and it shows why Ms. Tuchman deserves her fine reputation as an historian. The Perfect President, Frameworks: Conflict in Balance
Brillian Style, as Always..........2007-07-25
Tuchman was more a writer than an historian and that shows in every one of her books, but that is not a reason for not to read her, but on the contrary, to do it with deligh. We should have in mind that history is not an exact science and so it leaves lot of room for interpretation and beauty of style. We read Gibbons for exactly that reason, no matter how much his findings and ideas has been superseded by new research and data. Same with Tuchman.
Excellent and unparalleled.......2007-03-10
I am more convinced than ever that Barbara Tuchman was the greatest historian of the 20th century. I cannot think of anyone who can outmatch her.
This is a most penetrating and incisive look at the political and social scene of Europe and America before the First World War. After reading this book the reader is inevitably led to the belief that a major war was forthcoming.
My only negative comment are the words accompanying ther title 'APortrait of the World before the War' These words are inapproprite and misleading. True, Europe was the dominant world power and America getting to become
one. But hardly anything was mentioned about China which was in steep decline and Japan emerging as a superpower.
A surprisingly confused work from Tuchman.......2006-10-15
I'll mention that I am a fan of Tuchman's work, from "The Guns of August" to "The Calamitous Forteenth Century" to "the Zimmerman Telegram", her works are amongst the most accessible historical works (particularly for sometimes less well covered topics) around.
As such, I was suprised by the poor editing of "Proud Tower." I gather that the chapters of this book are cobbled together from various articles that she had published. If that is the case, the lack of unity woefully shows. This is a disjointed, wandering and confused affair that would have benefited from some tough love in the editorial department. It's not so much that skipping back and forth through time to cover various regions or groups in and of itself would have been a bad idea, but there is no real connection or theme that unifies the chapters well enough.
This would have been tolerable, however, had the content of the chapters themselves been of greater coherency. Generally these seem to be little more than a series of disjointed character pieces on a series of notable figures. Although the information presented could have been interesting, rarely do you get a sense of why you're being told about many of the figures since she seems to just tell you about their mannerisms and quirks, and then drops them. Since she switches through so many names in a chapter without providing much framework for why she is doing this, some of the chapters seem little better than a list of names.
If you're interested in reading one of Tuchman's books, she has many fine works, but this is not one of her best.
Unique approach to History.......2006-05-15
This book covers events in a number of European countries just prior to world war one in way which is totally different from any history I have ever read. Tuchman's style is unique and gripping. You almost get the feeling that you were there and participating in the events. She gives a very human dimension to the events.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Book Description
Three American missiles hit the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, and what Americans view as an appalling and tragic mistake, many Chinese see as a "barbaric" and intentional "criminal act," the latest in a long series of Western aggressions against China. In this book, Peter Hays Gries explores the roles of perception and sentiment in the growth of popular nationalism in China. At a time when the direction of China's foreign and domestic policies have profound ramifications worldwide, Gries offers a rare, in-depth look at the nature of China's new nationalism, particularly as it involves Sino-American and Sino-Japanese relations--two bilateral relations that carry extraordinary implications for peace and stability in the twenty-first century.
Through recent Chinese books and magazines, movies, television shows, posters, and cartoons, Gries traces the emergence of this new nationalism. Anti-Western sentiment, once created and encouraged by China's ruling PRC, has been taken up independently by a new generation of Chinese. Deeply rooted in narratives about past "humiliations" at the hands of the West and impassioned notions of Chinese identity, popular nationalism is now undermining the Communist Party's monopoly on political discourse, threatening the regime's stability. As readable as it is closely researched and reasoned, this timely book analyzes the impact that popular nationalism will have on twenty-first century China and the world.

Good Narrative, Yet Misleading.......2007-07-30
Professor Gries's China's New Nationalism may be more appropriately titled Nationalist Narratives in Contemporary China: A Literary Critique. The author draws his primary resources from a variety of Chinese- and English-language newspapers, popular magazines, movies, tv shows, pamphlets, posters, etc. The book, though well-intended, is written more like a literary criticism than a serious discussion on China's political, economic, or social problems. Students of Chinese studies or policy makers who are seriously interested in Sino-American relations will not gain substantive knowledge from reading this book.

A Better Approach, An Excellent Work, a Little Outdated
After reading this book I will be looking for future works by its author (Peter Gries).
There are dozens of books I could have chosen on this topic. I chose China's new nationalism by peter Gries because his approach is superior to the approach used by most books, because his approach is less subject to bias or misinterpretation, than that used by the others.
Most books calculate the rise or fall of Chinese nationalism according to such things as
The number of Chinese spies caught in the US and the rise or fall in the careers of outspoken Chinese Nationalists such as Gen. Zhu Chenghu and Gen. Peng Guangqian. But more (or fewer) spies being caught is a reflection of the FBI's efficacy, not the rise or fall in tide of Chinese Nationalism, and careers of those like Zhu and Peng can rise or fall for many reasons. (their careers might even rise if they "swear off" nationalism and join the Chinese mainstream.
Authors who rely on the above evidence can bend it to say whatever they want.
For that reason, Gries' approach, which looks more at phenomena such as student demonstrations, Chinese Wall Posters, editorials and movies allowed in the Chinese media,
is a better gauge of whether nationalism in China is part of the mainstream or a small non-threatening wing such as exists in every country.
The only downside to the book is that the material is a little bit dated. Published in 2003 it contains little or no material more current than 2000 or 2001 and nearly all of it focuses on 1997-1999.
If you area serious student of Chinese politics you MUST own Gries' book. But to be truly relevant to today, his book should be updated.
good intentions, full of misunderstandings.......2005-05-23
East will be East; West will be West. despite the book's best intentions, the author's interpretation of Chinese nationalism comes off laughable. which CHinese still thinks of Chinese-foreign relations in terms of "father-son" relationships? Did this guy talk to any CHinese at all? or maybe a Mandarin from the Manchu Dynasty?
Understanding Chinese nationalism.......2004-08-03
If one wants to understand Chinese nationalism, this book is a must read. While I noticed that one reviewer thought the book had an anti-US bias, it's very difficult to explain the reasons behind Chinese nationalism without taking on that tone.
China's Government.......2004-06-21
The book gives a good review of how China perceives the western power. The book goes further to show the relationships between Japan and the United States and how the economies pushed out China of world trade and future growth.
The book gives lots of detail and facts but is a slow read, and is written with a harsh slant against the United States, blaming the US for numerous problems in China.
Overall, there are lots of good facts but you have to read it with a grain of salt.

Book Description
This is the first introductory text on conservation biology to focus clearly on southern Australia and the problems that face its native animals and plants and their habitats as a result of human interference. Conservation Biology features a series of topical case histories that highlight management issues and some of the successes and disappointments that have occurred, and each chapter includes suggestions for further reading.
