Book Description

Raised in the Great Depression and shaped by World War II, they changed the business world and helped build modern America . . .
Kindred Spirits tells the story of Harvard Business School's remarkable class of 1949, which included some of the most innovative business visionaries of the postwar era. Among the members of this exceptional class, 28 percent retired as presidents, chairmen, or CEOs. Kindred Spirits shows how these businessmen shaped the business trends that transformed America: from the advent of modern marketing techniques, fueled by television and a growing middle class, to the rise of high technology as key driver of the American economy and the importance of using Wall Street to leverage wealth and build companies. Among the legendary figures intimately profiled are Marvin Traub, who built Bloomingdale's; Jim Burke, who guided Johnson & Johnson's tremendous rise and saw the company through the trauma of the Tylenol poisonings; and Peter McCullough, who transformed a little-known company into the powerhouse Xerox. Kindred Spirits is more than a story of an extraordinary group of business leaders; it is a story of how today's America came to be.

3 out of 5 stars A magazine article - only longer, and in hardback.......2004-08-09

There are a lot of things to like about Kindred Spirits. Its written with a solid pace, with a fair eye to both the achievments and limitations of a notable group, and with care not to overreach its modest ambitions. At the same time, I found this book somewhat dissapointing.

The deepest dissapointment comes from incongruity of the book's central thesis and the data it presents. The back cover carries the blurb "It was a time when value had meaning, with lessons we can learn from." In it, though, I found an account of a group no more or less scrupulous than those I've worked with over the last 10 years - in Business School and in industry. The subjects of this book donate to charity and don't seem to drive exotic sports cars, but they do bribe officials, fake the numbers, and repress unions. Its not that they're a bad bunch; the men portrayed here work incredibly hard and seem genuinely insightful about business, but they're not substantially ethically different from MBAs today. I had trouble identifying where the bygone values were - criticizing the tech bubble? questioning the wisdom of 80s LBOs? - its pretty easy to make those calls in hindsight.

The other dissapointment for me was the story not told. In the book there is a subset of the class - the most dynamic, smartest, most successful - called "The Group". There's a handful of them, 8 or so, and every year they make a ski trip with all their families. They stick together in an usually tight, powerful network. I would love to hear more about what personal and professional bonds keep that kind of association intact for better than 50 years. What's missing here is the personal dimension behind that concentration of power. An in-depth look into that could be a book on its own.

Other complaints ran a bit less deep, but were nevertheless distracting. Worst among these was pretty shoddy editing - there were several pieces of narrative that were repeated verbatim in different parts of the book. Initially, I thought I'd lost my place and was re-reading an earlier chapter.

All that said, these are inspiring people, particularly in their courage and their confidence, and the lead interesting lives. Callahan succeeds most when he lets them speak in their own words. I was not at all sorry to have read this, but wish more of the potential depth could have been realized.

2 out of 5 stars A bit of a snooze.......2003-07-30

I bought this book for a friend of mine as a congratulations gift on her acceptance to the Harvard Business School class of 2005. Knowing I'm a voracious reader, she asked me to preview it for her. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed.

To be sure, Mr. Callahan has a difficult task - to shape several hundred biographies into a coherent work in 320 pages. It is difficult enough to write one compelling biography! Unfortunately, Mr. Callahan was not able to pull out enough personalities, interesting trivia, or intersecting events to weave an interesting tapestry, instead writing about those experiences virtually everyone has shared -- drinking and reminiscing at old reunions, talking about how we went our own way and returned older and wiser, and in this case, how the collected group rose the corporate ladder. The book lacks the space to give more than a cursory examination to any single business leader, and it does not bother to illuminate us at to what experiences at Harvard tied directly to the success of the class, or exactly what common values they shared (other than some trite yet vigorous finger shaking at the fact that nearly the entire class participated in WWII). However, there are some eye-rolling and oft-repeated lines about how some members of the class suffered the hardship of working their way through their undergraduate years, as if tens of thousands of college students don't do that today (in fact Mr. Callahan alludes that they do not.) As a result, the book reads more like a long resuscitation of facts than as a compelling narrative.

The quotes on the jacket cover promised, "A time when values had meaning, with lessons we can learn", and included the engaging hook "They stormed the beaches of Normandy and the islands of the South Pacific, but the exceptional generation of Americans that won World War II also produced the greatest group of business leaders of the post-war era", but Callahan seems to give up his thesis of common experiences forging common values from the first pages, revealing that several graduates of the esteemed class of '49 have been investigated variously for insider trading by the SEC, by the Justice Department for bribery, or by the FBI for mafia connections. In fact, several of the alums he writes extensively about have extremely questionable business backgrounds. Additionally, it would be hard to differentiate between today's top business school graduates and those of the middle-last century, who went to find job stability and make money, "although millions, not billions as some leaders today." To paraphrase Mr. Dickens, in short, the period was so like the present period, that one of its nosiest authorities insists on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

This isn't to say that there isn't a fascinating story to tell in the graduates of Harvard Business School, or the class of '49. In my opinion, it just hasn't been told here.

At this point I'll share that this is a qualified review -- I stopped reading about halfway into the book, which is rare for me. It is entirely possible that Mr. Callahan successfully ties the book together and presents its lessons in the final pages. I'll never know. I've since moved on to purchase "Pinstipes and Pearls: The Women of the Harvard Law Class of '64..." which thus far is much more personal and compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Then and Now.......2002-11-27

As I read this book I became aware of just how much times have changed since 1949. Nowadays no Harvard Business School MBA student learns this style of business. Now they teach students how to line their own pockets while dismantling successful American businesses and putting all the employees out on the street. They also teach that this is simply good business.

5 out of 5 stars corporate heroes.......2002-11-01

The example of the Harvard 49ers is inspirational, and their adventures in business make for an exciting story.

3 out of 5 stars My Wish For a Good "Jeannie" Book Was Not Granted.......2005-12-30

I found the book a real downer.
I get the feeling Steve Cox was not a fan of "I Dream of Jeannie".
It was a comedy show, but in this book it is basically derided as a TV show without direction or depth.
I don't agree. It was pure fantasy afterall. A genie and her master trying to cope in a real, modern world where genies don't exist and the problems she causes trying to please her master. In one blink she would get Tony into trouble, usually with Dr. Bellows.
Most of the problems came from Dr. Bellows who would walk right into Tony's house and catch Tony with an apple tree in his living room or an elephant in the bedroom.
Tony should have kept the curtains drawn and the doors locked.
The situations and Major Nelson's explanations were very funny.
Further I believe Tony Nelson cared deeply about his genie. There were many episodes where in the end he realizes he loves and needs Jeannie. Examples:(1)Episode where Jeannie can be sent away forever on Haji's birthday. (2)Before Tony proposes, Jeannie becomes angry and vows to leave for good. Tony flys to the Middle East to apologize and beg her to return with him.
Granted Jeannie caused headaches and problems for Tony and at times he would wish he had never found her bottle, but always in the end he realized he could not live without her.
I do agree that Jeannie and Tony should not have married.
Quality of the show's scripts went down to rock bottom at that point.
Writers could have done so much with wedding plans and such. Plots where Jeannie's parents and family could have insisted on attending wedding...
Unlike some reviews, I believe the book should have focused only on the TV show "I Dream of Jeannie".
The cover implies the text is an indepth, behind-the-scenes look at the 1960s TV comedy show "I Dream of Jeannie". But inside, the book showcases every "genie" in TV and movie history as well as the TV comedy "Bewitched".

5 out of 5 stars Calling all Jeannie fans!.......2005-07-20

I loved this book! Stephen Cox did a great job! It's incredibly well-researched and well-written. I loved the Bewitched chapter, too. Most folks compare the 2 shows to each other anyway, so why not have a chapter of info right there, at the reader's fingertips?

It's chock-full of great pictures, interesting tid-bits and little-known trivia. If you love Jeannie, then you'll love this book!

3 out of 5 stars Never realized Larry Hagman was so weird.......2004-06-05

This book really opened my eyes to just what a kook Larry Hagman was. He did some mighty odd things during the filming of this show, and it's amazing none of that strangness ever translated to the show. After reading this book, I have lost a good deal of respect for the man, but still enjoy the show greater.

              1 out of 5 stars Why bother?.......2004-04-26

Why in the world would any author write about a subject he/she so detested? That's the real question with this book. I don't get it.

The photos are a great addition, as are what little behind-the-scenes trivia exists. There's an awful lot of non-Jeannie "padding," as if the author couldn't find enough to write about the show and just stuck in some "stuff" to fill in space- like a whole chapter of an irrelevent real-life death, and the entire end chapter on "Bewitched," of all things!.

Worst of all, though, is the entire beginning of the book, with its constant drivel about how terrible the show was. Well, I was there in 1964. I watched the Jeannie shows when they were first-run. It was NOT terrible then, and it's still pretty cute today.

So, the question remains: Why in the world would anyone write an entire book that was obviously geared to a show's fans, when he/she couldn't say much nice about it? Sounds pretty ridiculous to me.

              5 out of 5 stars A must-to-have book!.......2003-11-28

              Hi!

I'm only 16 years old, so I didn't grew up watching I dream of Jeannie, but I just love the show!! That's why I ordered the book and also Larry Hagman's biography Hello Darlin, which is an awesome book too. Dreaming of Jeannie includes a lot of information an great pictures, the book is also well written. It's only a pity that Steve Cox doesn't seem to like I dream of Jeannie, and that he's more a Bewitched fan. The only thing I didn't like about the book is that the last chapter is dedicated to Bewitched, but for the rest it's just a must to have!!

With the tenacious investigative skills and gusto of the seasoned reporter, Joseph N. DiStefano has written a must-read history of this vital industry and its principal player, as well as the unauthorized biography of Comcast's founder, Ralph Roberts, and his son and successor, Brian.

Though rivals like Fox News owner and satellite TV baron Rupert Murdoch continue to nip at its heels, though consumer discontent simmers, Comcast, with allies in small-town city halls and Washington, D.C., as well as powerful companies like Microsoft, continues to exert influence over Hollywood, Madison Avenue, and every TV viewer. We are, indeed, all COMCASTed.

I just read this book because I was mad at Comcast--long story. While I didn't find it brimming with "dirt" I did find it a quick, interesting read and gave me some of the answers to my questions--why this giant has not been felled by the government...it's all in the message. The Robertses are very clever about how their media messages are presented and swallowed. If you're looking for a pure rant, you won't find satisfaction in this book. If you're looking for a sublimely damning look inside the company that pretty much controls how we watch tv and how much we pay for it, you'll enjoy this book.

With the theories she'd learned in her Women’s Studies classes still fresh in her mind, Kristin thought this was her chance to enter a whole new feminist arena, but in reality she was about to enter another world entirely. Her carefully orchestrated artistic interludes would be sandwiched between skits involving white lace thongs, smoke machines, and a bodybuilder spinning by her neck. Kristin tells the whole story in this hilarious book, alternating between an account of directing the show, which builds to the disastrous climax of opening night, and reportage on women’s bodybuilding and the little-known sub-culture around it, including the use of steroids, the side business of strong women who wrestle men for money, and the judging controversy that threatens to split the sport in two.

                4 out of 5 stars Mercy!.......2007-04-18

This is a funny book about the author's misadventures -- and incredible naivety -- directing this amazing women's bodybuilding spectacular. I was one of the "schmoes" attending the event, and I can tell you, these women's bodies talked volumes! They didn't need any poetry, dancing, speechifying, or any of the nonsense the author was apparently responsible for. Yes, we in the audience hooted at those amateur interludes. But we applauded mightily when we saw these incredibly muscular women; they had the courage and devotion to remake their bodies to please themselves and not others. The better part of this book is the author's description of the women's bodybuilding scene. Sadly the author claims that almost all the women bodybuilders take steroids or some form of supplement, and she claims as well that most were victims of abuse as children. In addition, the sport has been crippled by inconsistent judging standards and a wave of reaction against the ultra-muscular look on women. The author does include some tributes at the end of the book suggesting why Laurie Fierstein's groundbreaking Celebration was so important. Because it demonstrated that there was an audience for women bodybuilders just showing themselves off and not competing for the arbitrary approval of some timid male judges. Again, this book is a fast read and a revealing look at this unique world. I am deducting one star, however, for one of the final chapters, where the author indulges her writer's muse in Grand Central Station and bores her audience yet again, just as she did at the Fierstein Celebration.

                5 out of 5 stars great story!.......2006-06-30

I've been an athlete all my life and I now have so much respect for what these bodybuilders do! I'm not into the super muscular look, but their devotion is unbelieveable. I think the writer does an incredible job covering the history of women's sports and digs up some pretty amazing stuff about drug use and wrestling. Wow! What a world! Definitely recommend it. A fun and easy read.

First-rate author Kristin Kaye deserves admiration for her immense, unflinching bravery in writing this book. With deft writing skill and gripping momentum, she bares her evolving personal and professional raw self, exposing every hope, every delusion, misjudgment, rationalization and grief in the rarified experience of her first big break - writing and directing a Broadway show. The pain of her tough and bizarre journey is exquisite, and yet she unfolds the tale in such an engaging way that she allows you to laugh at it all, even eggs you on with her wounds gaping open. Anyone who can do this successfully is irresistible, straight off. Her dream turns into a garish circus with a crazed tiger in the center ring whose leash is tearing apart, and no one will listen to this ringmaster's warning cries. On top of this steady, jading, black humorist perspective is an equally naked stare into the wild world of professional female bodybuilding.

Kaye weaves her tobogganist tale through the glitzy cusp and seedy underbelly of bodybuilding. She provides a journalistic history on the sport that is arguably one of the most solid and up-to-date accounts available, lays out gritty details of competition dieting, primping and steroid use, all the while building suspense that will have you racing through the pages toward climax of the Broadway debut. She presents real women from the sport, casting them in honest light - bleached hair, impossible implants, brazen remarks, stalwart dedication, sensitive embraces and all. Whatever you think about the women in the book and the world of bodybuilding, Kristin leaves you with the distinct impression that you are hearing someone call the shots as she sees them, nothing more, nothing less, with the added bonus of her distinct incisive candor in your ear.

For bodybuilders, this book can be a place to recognize themselves or at least people they know. For thespians, literary types and any bodybuilder with a sense of humor, the effect of reading it is like lounging with friends at two in the morning, capping each others' jokes until you collapse laughing into the pillows, your body hiccupping because it keeps being funny and you just can't laugh anymore, then someone reveals a sad secret.

It's also a valuable resource for information about the sport's history, a fair look at the battles raging within and around its tenuous survival, and fodder for reflecting on the cultivating legacy. For those who are not familiar with the sport, Kristin not only gives you nuts and bolts to make you conversant, she takes you on a wild ride you'll never forget.

Finally, this story is for anyone who has ever found fate in a wrong number, who has aspired to create something meaningful, to be the best she can be, to succeed, and wound up losing control of the plane speeding full-throttle into the mountainside. This is not a book you can walk away from. Whatever your feelings on the many subjects in this book, if you still have a pulse in your cerebellum, you'll be hooked.

                Book Description

Books in this series have been completely revised and brought up to date to reflect recent large-scale changes in New York State's High School Regents exams. Let's Review books have been especially designed to prepare students for Regents finals in New York, but also make fine textbook supplements that can be used in high schools everywhere. In addition to subject reviews, each title contains either model exams or actual recent Regents exams with answers. Many teachers prefer to use Let's Review book as classroom companion texts to Barron's Regents Exams and Answers books. This review book, like the current Regents exam, reflects a new emphasis on basics of geography, now part of the high school curriculum. Formerly, this book's title was Global Studies.

Appears to be a thorough review for NY State Regents in Global History and Geography.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best way to go..........2006-09-18

I don't know why some reviewers said this book was accurate. It was filled with obvious errors in the answer key. The information was poorly organized, and many times the exact same page appeared repeatedly in different places. The actual review is pretty informative and all the information you need is there. As long as you really pay attention to what you're reading and are able to pick up on the errors, you should be alright. If you don't though, and blindly accept their answers (despite the fact they they plainly contradict the text) you'll end up very confused and very mistaken. My friends ordered the Prentice Hall review book (straight from their website, I don't think Amazon sells it) and they seemed to like that better.

3 out of 5 stars It depends what you want this book for.......2004-07-20

I got a 99 on the Global Regents, but it was thanks to my notes from class rather than this book. I had taken AP Euro the whole year and we just reviewed Global at the end of the year, about a month before the regents. At first I tried to use this book, but there was no way I could read the whole thing in a short amount of time with so many other regents I had to take, and frankly, I didn't need to. I was just hoping to get some good review questions to practice with. The questions themselves were all right, but the answer key had many, many mistakes. It was incredibly frustrating and I soon gave up using this book.

If you want this book for the whole year, for the actual information, then it would be a good book to have. However, if you want it as a quick review before the regents I'd probably go with something else. Also, if you want practice questions while preparing for the regents, get the red Barrons book, with all the old regents- you'll be better off that way.

I am a 10th grade World History teacher in California. This book is the best resource I own. It not only helps the students, but allows me the chance to review prior to lectures and activities. It is must for any world history or global history student or teacher.

Like many high school New Yorkers, I was super-worried about doing well on my Regents exam. But thanks to Mr. Mark Willner's book, I not only passed, I excelled! I was so satisfied, I told everyone to use it. If you are taking a Global Regent, get this book. This, in addition to your Global History class, will definately assure your success. Mr. Willner's thorough analysis and explanation in crucial areas in the subject is comprehensive and thorough. He is the Social Studies chairman at my school and was named best in the country, so he must have done something right! Get this book, you'll be glad you did.

If you're taking Global Studies, this book could help, but don't expect anything that'll bring you from an F to an A. There are sections on the history of each area of the world, mostly just to get an understanding of the events. This book would be most helpful when reviewing for the regents, since you get a brief overview of the whole course. In order to improve this book, I think Barrons should include a lot more review questions so the book could be helpful when reviewing for all tests during the year. Then, this book would deserve 4 or 5 stars.

                      Book Description

With a style that combined biting sarcasm with the "language of the free lunch counter," Henry Louis Mencken shook politics and politicians for nearly half a century. Now, fifty years after Mencken's death, the Johns Hopkins University Press announces The Buncombe Collection, newly packaged editions of nine Mencken classics: Happy Days, Heathen Days, Newspaper Days, Prejudices, Treatise on the Gods, On Politics, Thirty-Five Years of Newspaper Work, Minority Report, and A Second Mencken Chrestomathy.

Discovered among his private papers and edited by columnist Terry Teachout, this collection is full of the iconoclastic common sense that marked Mencken's astonishing career as the premier American social critic of the twentieth century. This chrestomathy ("a collection of literary passages") incorporates writings about a variety of subjects: politics, war, music, literature, men and women, lawyers, and the brethren of the cloth.

This book is essential for Mencken lovers. It contains a huge number of mostly obscure Mencken quotes. These are not just the pithy zingers for which Mencken is famous, but many more lengthy items. Indispensible.
