Leveraged buyouts, stock swaps, megamergers--behind every spectacular, headline-making deal you've read about in the last two decades, there were real, live people risking their careers to buy companies, or combine them.

Daniel Kadlec, financial columnist for Time magazine, lines up nine of the biggest dealmakers of our era and profiles the most important deal of each man's career. He keeps most of the focus on the transactions themselves, but also tries to attach a human face to business-page staples like Carl Icahn, Hugh McColl, and Sumner Redstone. He succeeds, to an extent; we come away at least with a feeling of what it's like to engage in conversation with these corporate titans. For example, there's a rather chilling encounter with Icahn that helps illustrate why he was such a cold-blooded success as a corporate-takeover artist.

Readers will probably end up liking most of these guys. Hugh McColl, for example, waited until his NationsBank was bigger than Bank of America before he merged the two, even though he could've done the deal several years earlier. He comes off not just as a man with brass between his legs, but also as one with unusual integrity.

But no matter how you feel about these sometimes cutthroat men and the business moves they've made, you can't help but learn from them: how to improve weak bargaining positions, how to invest in out-of-favor industries, how to adapt to changing times--or, if you have the courage and vision, how to change the times to suit you. --Lou Schuler

Book Description

The names are legendary . . . Sandy Weill . . . Sumner Redstone . . . Carl Icahn . . . Hugh McCoII . . .

The stories are as fresh as today's headlines . . . Citicorp and Travelers Group . . . NationsBank and BankAmerica . . . Cendant . . .

Here, for the first time, you can meet the men and the minds that have ignited the greatest decade of deal making in the history of business.

In the 1980s Tom Wolfe coined the term "masters of the universe" for Wall Street's elite. Then deal makers were pioneering the leveraged buyouts and corporate raiding techniques of that colorful era. Times have changed, tactics have changed. But today merger and acquisition activity goes on at a rate far greater than anything seen in the eighties. To date the nineties have produced an incredible $8 trillion in mergers and acquisitions worldwide, compared to only $2.4 trillion in the so-called decade of greed.

Wolfe's phrase is even more apt today for the deal makers you are about to meet in this book.

These are strong, smart, visionary men of business who see what others do not, who act as others cannot, who have the will, the drive, the ambition to make their deals and drive their companies to heights that the rest of us can only envy--and learn from.

Nine of today's most powerful masters of the universe are profiled in these pages by Time magazine's Wall Street columnist Daniel J. Kadlec. Each of these top guns sat for extensive interviews, as Kadlec quizzed them about their greatest deal and the strategies they used to pull it off: the critical elements they saw that made the deal worth doing, and, ultimately, how they got the deal done.

The result is a penetrating, incisive portrait of business as it is done at the highest level, with fascinating insights and lessons for each of us. Inside you'll meet:

Hugh McColl, with his gripping tale of buyingBankAmerica

Sandy Weill, on how he pulled offthe Citicorp-Travelers merger

Stephen Bollenbach, on the rocky road to breaking up Marriott Corp.

Carl Icahn, with the inside story of his showdown with Texaco

Gary Wilson, on buying Northwest Airlines

Ted Forstmann, as he recounts surviving and then thrivingwith Gulfstream

Joe Rice, on his signature deal carving Lexmark out of IBM

Henry Silverman, as he relates his groundbreaking purchase of Avis

Sumner Redstone, with his farsighted deal for Viacom

Superbly written, always engrossing, and filled with the drama of great events and sensational deeds, Masters of the Universe will open your eyes to the brave new world of deal makers and deal making.

And Here's a Sample of What the Masters Themselves Reveal About Their Deal-Making Strategies

"Stay in one room. . . . Lock all the doors. Don't eat. Don't drink.Don't go to the bathroom until you've got a deal."-- Hugh McColl

"Any number of wonderful deal guys will tell you how important price is when you're buying a company. But I will guarantee you that it's not that important. . . . You buy the wrong business at 25 percent less than you should pay for it and you take a little longer to go broke. You buy the right business at 25 percent more than you should pay, and you make five times your money instead of six."-- Ted Forstmann

5 out of 5 stars The most important lesson to learn from this book is..........2003-01-24

This book does a great job showing how an assortment of business people from different industries became successful in their careers. The most important lesson to learn from this book is that many of these business people came from a similar background to your own and you too could have the success they did. This book does not give a large amount of detail as to how each businessperson became successful, but it still gives an excellent high-level view.

4 out of 5 stars Good read.......2001-09-29

Masters of the Universe is a very good airplane/bedroom compilation. It's really a history of the "great" business innovators and shakers during the late 19th and 20th century. Each "mover" is 10-12 pages long. If you like history and business, this should be very educational.

2 out of 5 stars skimming the surface.......2001-05-25

As a business writer, I fruitfully used this book as the barest presentation of the facts before going to do a heavy reporting project. However, had I not spent some time with one of the protagonists in this book and then a great deal more with his associates, I would never have clearly understood what they actually do and how they work. As it stands, this book offers a quick and dirty intro to the biggest dealmakers of their time. While some background and explanations are offered, it leaves out the gritty details and true complexity of what goes on in these huge and often risky deals. That disappointed me about this book more and more as I delved into my work.

Kadlec also adopts a kind of chummy tone with these guys, like they are bar pals as well as subjects for his work, and so you wonder what he may have left out to protect his professional relationships. He barely questions what they do and never really broaches the questions of ethics, as if such considerations don't exist; well, they do, and the people I spoke to were informed and concerned about ethics.

So this is merely a superficial trade-journalistic treatment. While this has merit, it is rather more like a vanilla milkshake than the full meal I had hoped for. I wanted deeper info, but then I was preparing to enter on a several-month project about a field I knew little about when I started.

The writing is also not very good, and lengthy interviews are included verbatim, which is a shoddy way to beef up the text to little purpose.

Not strongly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time.......2001-05-15

I must admit to being utterly disappointed with this book. So much so, that I skipped most of it and ultimately decided it to be a waste of time. Spelling errors, repetitive language and uninteresting commentary seem to be a consistent theme in this book. I would neither recommend its purchase, nor borrowing it from a friend. Don't waste your time.

4 out of 5 stars A fine read for business book readers.......2000-05-11

I like books that summarize outstanding businessmen. Sometimes I learn something. Sometimes I'm just entertained. This book does not contain massive new information but it entertained me and I learned something. While I recommend the book, it is not in the top 10 business books I have read.

There's something a little sad about the fact that shopping has become the Western world's favorite leisure activity, but I guess if we're trapped in a post-capitalist consumer society the best we can do is follow Paul Lukas's advice and treat the corporate wastelands of our industrial decline as playgrounds and art galleries beyond the scope of shrinking government entitlements and endowments. In Inconspicuous Consumption the fetish value of the obscure and bizarre products that occupy the back shelves of supermarkets is explored in loving detail. If you wish to know the pleasures of sauerkraut juice, toothpick dispensers, and adhesive nipple covers then this collection of articles from the zine Beer Frame should be your Baedeker to the land of ironic shopping.

      Book Description

From kitschy novelties and wildly unappetizing food products to beautifully functional items such as garlic presses and toothpick dispensers, Inconspicuous Consumption is a delightful celebration of the sometimes elegant, sometimes ridiculous fringes of our late-20th-century culture. 50 photos. 192 pp. Author interviews & national radio campaign. National publicity. 15,000 print.

If you are one of those people who likes browsing in drug stores at 3:00 for that hit of domesticated weirdness---such as meat-free Shnookums and Meat pasta or 666 Cold Medicine---then you will savor this book like a fine can of 7 Up Gold.

Also worth looking for are issues of "Beer Frame," Lukas's delightful zine, and "Object Lessons: Songs about Products," a Lukas-inspired EP featuring the highly hummable (seriously) song "Golden Boy Peanuts."

5 out of 5 stars This book is a godsend........1998-05-14

I always wondered if I was the only person in the world who was blown away by products like "Armour Pork Brains in Milk Gravy". Paul Lukas has proven that a) I'm not alone and b) if I was more talented I could have made money writing a book about bizarre products. My only complaint about this book was that it ended. I was ready for hundreds of more examples, particularly the weird foods.

As Sigue Sigue Sputnik so weirdly proved back in the '80s, _anything_ can be a product (even a rock band). This well-written, researched and hilarious book takes us from Thirst and Musk LifeSavers (a favorite in the former penal colony known as Australia) to microwave pork rinds and the smoker's robot (read to believe). The perfect read-to-your-friend-in-the-car-while-roadtripping book

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome.......1997-02-13

Paul has a talent for looking twice at products we usually take for granted. It's the "how did we ever miss this?" attitude he takes that makes his book and writing so fun -- he's got a great wit and eye for the absurd in everyday life. After reading his book (and his zine, Beer Frame), I've never been able to go to the supermarket in the same way again

4 out of 5 stars Turnaround tips for companies in crisis.......2007-04-12

Managing a successful turnaround is tough, and it requires tough actions by "company doctors" who gallop in to rescue companies from the brink of financial death. Although most management projects require subtlety and tact, turnarounds need quick, blunt actions, such as firing top managers or selling unprofitable divisions. Stuart Slatter, David Lovett and Laura Barlow present a blueprint for people engaged in turnarounds. Using interviews with 80 turnaround specialists in the United Kingdom, the authors make their point - often more than once. The most interesting and useful parts of this volume are the short, boxed case studies in each chapter. We recommend this informative book on a little-known business topic to creditors, attorneys, accountants, venture capitalists and curious managers, as well as to specialized consultants who may become involved in turnarounds.

The book provides a lot of specifics into Mr. Hughes' numerous business dealings through the eyes and ears of Jack Real. Of course, the book provides a lot more, such as Mr. Hughes' drug addiction and the shocking manipulation of the last 20 years of his life by Bill Gay and his inner circle.

As for Jack Real, I have a hard time understanding why he did some of the things that he did. I think there is more to his story.

5 out of 5 stars True picture of a Genius.......2005-12-30

A wonderful book. A realistic portrayal of the businessman we know as Howard Hughes. This book is not fluff. There is a rare glimpse of Hughes as a fanatic. I was amazed at his obsession and knowledge with airplanes. Some of his other business holdings surprised me.

This story tells how money can insulate you from other people, but, at the same time, how the ones you hire can be a detriment to your growth.

Howard Hughes has had many books written about his idiosyncrasies but few have written a story that gets inside the real Howard Hughes' head. Jack Real has given readers a look at Howard Hughes that has not been seen before. And the stories that Real spins with the help of writer Bill Yenne make for fascinating reading that is simply too difficult to make up -- it's got to be real. And Real it is.

5 out of 5 stars Authoritative biography of Howard Hughes.......2004-01-26

A definitive biography of Howard Hughes by Jack Real, his most trusted confidant. "Money Secrets of the Rich and Famous" describes Jack Real as the man closest to Howard Hughes since the death of his father. Jack Real provides important details and dispells many of the untruths, exaggerations and rumors that surround the fascinating life of Howard Hughes. This biography exposes why the reclusive world of Howard Hughes was turned into an asylum. Highly recommended.

From the early Italian adventurers who played an important role in the European expansion across the Atlantic to the political and business leaders of the 1990s, this book tells a dramatic story. The heart of the story is the mass migration that took place between 1880 and 1924, when a whole culture left its ancient roots to settle in the cities and towns of America.

3 out of 5 stars Want to know who the *real* Sacco and Vanzetti were?.......2007-02-04

Did you know the largest mass lynching in American history was of Italian Americans?

I minored in Italian American studies as an undergrad. As you may imagine, there isn't that much literature out there that comprehensively covers "the Italian American experience", so La Storia was a recurring staple of the curricula for more than a few of my classes.

The information contained in this book is for the most part helpful, a great introduction from the beginnings of Italian Americana to the late 20th century. Many people today (regardless of heritage) do not know enough about Italian culture, although it is a huge part of the fabric of America. Also discussed is the political and economical history of 19th century Italy (something many Americans know nothing about), providing a nice starting point from which to put the Italian American experience into perspective. Although the authors mention the well-knowns like Al Capone and Fiorello Laguardia, what's great about La Storia is Mangione's and Morreale's inclusion of so many important personages of Italian heritage that have become lost in the sands of time.

My issue with this book is not its length but its density. So much information is crowded into every chapter, it's hard to retain all of it (and Mangione's excruciatingly wordy prose doesn't help). There are also some statistics and information nuggets that are uncited, but to the casual reader this won't be of any concern whatsoever.

La Storia is essentially the Bible of Italian American studies; a great cultural and historical overview, and a great introduction to the field. Ultimately, if you know next to nothing about Italian Americana, if you would like to enrich your knowledge, or if you just want to learn more about your cultural heritage, I recommend you buy this book.

Ideal gift for your Italian Sister in law. You learn her background and she appreciates your interest. I little bit wordy.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Engaging.......2006-10-31

I love this book. It offers an extensive history of the Italian American experience. This book is used as the textbook for a course I took, and I found myself consumed by it. Something I really appreciate about how this book is written is that while it is about Italian-Americans, it is also about what they left behind in Italy, and why. The context provided is concise, but very informative. Topics covered in La Storia include the Risorgimento, conditions emigrants endured, anti-Italian discrimination, westward expansion in the U.S., the mafia, anarchism (Sacco & Vanzetti), the image of the Italian-American, hollywood, and politics.
This is a great read (albeit a long one), and I highly recommend it. The only reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is that this book is mostly for those of Southern Italian and Sicilian extraction. Those who originate from Northern Italy may feel excluded.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good!.......2006-09-03

Enjoyed it immensely. Covers the Sicilian immigrant experience with a focus on America very well. If you enjoy this book you undoubtedly will also appreciate Eleven Days in August, a delightful book by Amatore Mille that covers his relationship with his southern Italian grandparents.

3 out of 5 stars Captures the sentiment, but not always the facts.......2006-08-06

As a second and third generation Italian American and a scholar, I found the book warmed my heart but saddened my soul. The following example is telling. The unwarranted praise for Columbus glosses over his (mis)deeds from the first page. Yes, he wrote how "kind and trusting these people are" but then wrote that those qualities would make them easy to enslave. (He does mention slavery later on, but such "negative press" is glossed over. A fault throughout the book.) As for protecting the people from sailors - all I can say is read Columbus's actual diary yourself. The book is unbalanced and inaccurate in many areas, but I do not have the time to review all of those errors here, although some are pointed out by other reviewers. This book will reinforce some biases held by many Italian Americans, including most of my relatives (many of whom loved the book), perhaps dispel a few held about Italian Americans by others, but it falls short - more by sins of omission and a lack of dimension and complexity. I was sorely disappointed by that, even though the nostalgic sentiment I felt as Mangione provided a framework for the stories of my grandparents, was appreciated, the book did not do justice to its overly ambitious title.

The Universe May Be a Mystery,
                  But It's No Secret

Michael Schneider leads us on a spectacular, lavishly illustrated journey along the numbers one through ten to explore the mathematical principles made visible in flowers, shells, crystals, plants, and the human body, expressed in the symbolic language of folk sayings and fairy tales, myth and religion, art and architecture. This is a new view of mathematics, not the one we learned at school but a comprehensive guide to the patterns that recur through the universe and underlie human affairs. 5 out of 5 stars presents both practical and mystical aspects of numbers as they relate to nature.......2007-09-23

A Beginners Guide to Constructing the Universe shows the mathematical underpinnings of nature by explaining how nature makes use of the numbers 1 - 10 and also 12 and 13. For example number six is used by nature in the construction of many things including walls of cells as the six sided hexagon is a very stable geometric object. There is some focus on mystical aspects of math but not too much so that there ends up being a lot of practical knowledge to be found here. The Fibonacci sequence is presented along with the use it is put to by nature. There is a presentation of the golden mean also. I highly recommend this book to those who have had interest in math drilled out of them by the drudgery of unfocused arithmetic and algebra lessons. This book is a peak into the fascinating world of mathematics and should whet your appetite for more. One book to consider after reading this book is "Fascinating Fibonacci's" as it contains more detailed information on the material found in chapter 5 of this book.

An amazing combination of mathematics, science, history, religion. As the story of geometry unfolds so unfolds many other stories of our universe.

                  2 out of 5 stars A few gems--mostly blather.......2007-08-22

Reminds me of people who see number patterns in everything--even when it's mere coincidence. A few good ideas and concepts, but trying to tease them out is a chore. And some of the books statements are flat wrong--sorry, but nature is sometimes horribly prolific with resources, not studiously careful. If you are interested in a kind of metaphysical approach, it might be very interesting, but if you are interested in real numbers, real math, real life, um, not here. He points things out that are derived from a triangle or rectangle or the intersection of this or that . . . but really, the 'things' could be designed with other concepts in mind.

5 out of 5 stars geometry for the art.......2007-08-03

I did very little geometry in school and as I was wanting to understand the golden mean I bought this book. I'm now on the number 5. This book discribes the making of the universe and how each number got its name. How everything starts from 1 and it goes on what 2 does and so on. It is deep reading but very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Discover a hidden depth to numbers and geometry.......2006-11-03

I always enjoyed geometry in school, and this book opened up a whole new depth to the subject for me.

Reading the book, I dug out my compass, pencil, straight edge and 30, 60, and 90 degree angles to perform the various exercises recommended by the author.

Constructing the various geometrical figures I found to be akin to creating mandalas. You create something originating in the abstract that becomes concrete, that in turn ultimately becomes personally meaningful.

Also, I learned to view several churches in town on a completely different level.

Reading this book, you will never look at the numbers one through ten in quite the same way again.

The numbers take on significance and hint at something sublime and even transcendent.

Through this book, I discovered the rich undercurrents of pythagorean number theory, and their application to the rich christian architecture of the medieval churches.

With all the fuss over feng shui, this book draws from our decidedly western tradition, revealing we have our own undiscovered architectural history that has yet to capture the popular imagination.

A wonderful introduction, chapter by chapter, number by number, to sacred geometry and the pythagoreanism that runs through it.

                        Book Description

Addressing decades of rain forest destruction, concerned scientists, often in concert with various environmental movements, have amassed an impressive amount of information on deforestation in areas throughout the world. In Tropical Forests, Thomas K. Rudel analyzes hundreds of local studies from the past twenty years to develop a much-needed global perspective on deforestation. With separate chapters on individual regions, including South and Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa, Rudel's work offers an up-to-date assessment of changes in the extent of the world's tropical forests. Through a meta-analysis, Rudel identifies the social, economic, and environmental forces driving forest cover change since 1980.

In addition to synthesizing a range of local studies, Rudel recounts the stories of people whose work preserves, destroys, or restores forests. Rudel's explanation of what has happened in each of the world's tropical forest regions reveals continued destruction in regions with large forests and some regeneration emerging in places with small, remnant forests. In the concluding chapter, Rudel considers the implications of these trends and describes policy directions for conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable development in each region.
