Book Description
A biography of noted businessman John Purdue (1802-1876), whose donations of time and money led to the founding of Indiana's land grant university, Purdue University, in 1869. Purdue also contributed to economically important bridge, railroad, and cemetery construction, the existence of Lafayette Savings Bank and the Battle Ground Collegiate Institute, cattle farming, Lafayette's public school system, and countless other worthy enterprises. To date there has been no published full length study of Mr. Purdue's life and work beyond casual street talk that portrayed Purdue as a difficult individual with whom to work. This biography incorporates research efforts by previous writers with facts gleaned from newspaper coverage, official documents, and a few rare samples of Mr. Purdue's letters. In this way, a complete picture of the man and myth is generated.

History of John Purdue.......2002-12-22
This book was a quick and easy read. The author compares and contrasts others that have written about John Purdue which is interesting for the reader. I recommend this book to any Purdue Alumnus as it shows the history of where John Purdue came from, his thoughts, and his actions to building the great Purdue University.

A braid is found belonging to a woman missing for 18 years--how can it solve the mystery of her disappearance?
The Science of Cold Case Files(r) reveals the absorbing true stories behind the pioneering A&E television series, and the intrepid detectives whose investigations resulted in the resolution of the most baffling of crimes-sometimes decades after they were committed.

Featuring the most fascinating Cold Case Files(r) on record, some of these cases have never been seen on television. Plus, this book offers an inside look at the intriguing clues found in cases that remain unsolved to this day.

This is as good as it gets.......2005-03-18
For all you TV thriller fans, The Science of Cold Case Files is an in depth exploration into the world of modern forensic science, the kind highly-acclaimed CBS TV drama `CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' is based upon. Yes, it's that interesting. It's also heavier.
Like the series, there's the thrill of discovery to The Cold Case. The only other book to have given me a such a rush to date, was Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, both having in common, thriller elements and insights into a specialized world we could - who knows - accidentally careen into by force of circumstance, tomorrow. Just knowing this will engage your imagination.
Except that the Cold Case delivers this with more gravity, being an expose on the dark side of man, and it's also heavy with science stuff. So, it cannot quite be described as unputdownable but the wonder of it all is Ramsland is a lucid and concise writer, so if you're a diehard CSI fan, like me, it'll be a book you'll want to finish, when you can.

Investment Classic.......2007-09-14
This book has a very specific target audience--financial advisors and clients who want to tap into the psyche of their financial advisor(s). If you are in one of the two categories you will get a tremendous amount out of this read. It is part historical yet he gives incite to where he thinks the industry is headed. In between is a moment of transition which can either be embraced or you can become a relic of days gone by.
I really appreciated this book because it validated the existence of ethical advisors. I first became aware of this book soon after the bust of the "dot com" bubble. Needless to say the industry was taking its lumps, often deservedly. The principles within confirmed in my mind that we were doing the right things and assured me that "this too shall pass."
Good Primer.......2006-09-05
This book was recommended to me in my interview for a financial advisor. This is a good primer for your financial advisor business. I read through the book once and will likely go back and reread it. I've tagged many of the pages for quick reference.
I am going to also get Murray's book, the New Financial Advisor because this one is a bit outdated with the examples. The only marketing technique he emphasizes is cold calling, but he gives you a good way to approach this scary bit of life. However, his advice and sample conversations are very valuable. Murray also offers many other bits of advice that range from building up your courage to dressing tips.
Don't Do What Everyone Else Does.......2006-02-14
This guy is a great writer, and I like his style. He seems to believe the key to success in investments and anything else is to do the exact opposite of what the crowd does. Take a firm stance and have faith in it. I happen to agree. It's tough to deny your insticts and not follow the crowd when things are going well for them and not for you, but it's really the only way to rise above mediocrity.
I have only two complaints about the book. First off it's too long. By page 300 or so you're begging the author to stop beating into your head the same ideas over and over again. Second, in all of his examples the prospect eventually ends up buying, even though we all know that his approach isn't always going to work. To his credit, the author says his approach won't always work, but he won't give an example of it not working, which I would have liked to see.
For someone like me who isn't even close to being a journeyman yet, this is a great and resourceful book that you can learn much from. Otherwise, you might find yourself skipping a few chapters, especially over basic things like dollar cost averaging, even though the author phrases his opinions about them so eloquently.
Excellent resourse for people in my field.......2005-09-06
This is a great book for financial planners. It has some very sound principals to follow and as I am reading, I am implementing many of the ideas into my practice.
One of the difinitive books on the business..........2005-03-15
My general rule of thumb is: If it was written by Nick Murray, I'd do well to read it. This book is no exception and is well worth the price of admission. What can one say that has not already been said? Still I thought I needed to second those reviews. The thought processes, the methodology, the scripts, the over-riding philosophy; all of it is helpful. That said, perhaps the most valuable aspect of this book is its ability to benefit the total range of investment advisors. It is tough enough to go toe to toe with the seasoned vet, but profoundly simple enough for the rookie to fall in line with. I don't agree with everything Nick says on every subject (I've never made a cold call in my entire career and I'm doing just fine without them) but he makes me think about every subject. He engages me and overwhelms me with his understated intelligence and impeccable logic. If you are in the business, this is a must read.
Book Description
In 1753, Voltaire-playwright, poet, philosopher and one of the most feted figures in Europe-was forced by Louis XV and his powerful mistress Madame Pompadour into exile, where he remained for the last twenty-five years of his life. During his years in Geneva, on the outskirts of France, Voltaire carved out a new world in isolation, becoming a successful entrepreneur, writing his masterpiece Candide, and lavishing gifts upon those around him. But it was as a figure cast out by the establishment that Voltaire began to develop his astonishingly modern ideas of human rights and social equality, borne out in his campaigns against a series of miscarriages of justice. In Voltaire in Exile, Ian Davidson recreates this period in the life of one of the giants of the Enlightenment. By painstakingly translating the rich correspondence between Voltaire and his family, members of the Court at Versailles, and the French intellectual elite, Davidson allows us to discover Voltaire the artist, the campaigner, the aesthete, the lover, the humorist. The result is a wonderfully vivid portrait of this extraordinarily funny, iconoclastic, complex, and, above all, ferociously intelligent individual.

Voltaire Exalted.......2005-04-10
Having been reminded of Voltaire from reading recent works on James Boswell and Benjamin Franklin, I found this very admirable book by Ian Davidson to be the remedy to my general ignorance about this great figure from the past. It is not the source to learn about Voltaire's early days or as the noted author of plays. However, from this book one can get a good feel for why Voltaire was, and remains, so important as the symbol of a thinking and witty man, living in an age often marked by severe religious, judicial, and political intolerance. He led a long, full life while often acting generously to improve the troubled lot of real humans.

Not the BEST but good enough.......2007-07-15
To be honest, I didn't use this book until two days before the AP test. I did well in class and read every single page of the 1150 page textbook. I was already using the 5 steps to a 5 AP for Biology so I decided to get it for World history. But I must say, I didn't like the organization of the information and felt like it was jumping around a lot. I read the entire review book but did not take the practice tests. Yes, I got my scores back and I got a 5 on it. So.. I don't know if the review book helped me or not because I already felt like I knew all of my information. But if you feel like you're not ready, I would double up on the review book. Preferably this book and Princeton Review. The best word of advice is to pay attention in class and read your textbook.
WooHoo!!!.......2007-07-11
My AP scores arrived today, and I got a 4! Although I had a great teacher, this book helped me review the entire course in a few days. It contains excellent summaries of each of the time periods and 3 multiple choice practice tests, if you include the one in the beginning of the book, with detailed explanations of why each answer is either right or wrong. (^-^)
Clear but with lots of information.......2007-05-23
If you're tired of reading wordy textbooks and you're looking for a source with lots of information laid out in a simple format, this book may be something you'd be interested in. It hits all the important points and it really helps you see the big picture and organize the information in your mind in a better way. After each small chapter there is a quiz. After each section key comparisons are given along with a timeline. I don't think I could have handled the AP exam without this, as I just really needed to see the information presented in a new way. I definitely recommend buying this EARLY in the year so you can implement your textbook knowledge as you read this book.
Excellent Test Prep.......2006-06-01
This is probably one of the best AP review book out there if not THE best. Unfortunately I started on this book kind of at the last minute, so I had to rush through. But this book has everything you need in it to pass the exam and the information is well presented.
great!.......2006-05-04
I found out about this book only two weeks before the exam & ordered it. I didn't finish reading it until the day before the exam (wasn't studying the whole time though). It really helped me out w/ the practice tests at the end of each section and a more consise review. I took the exam today and I don't think I did way too horrible (seeing that my teacher was completely useless). I really helped me see the big picture which is a huge part of the exam.

Book Description
In this illuminating journey around the globe, Scott A. Hunt takes us face to face with true heroes including: the Dalai Lama; the famed dissident of Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi; and the activist who brought peace to Latin America, Oscar Arias of Costa Rica, who share their historic struggles and show us how to find optimism in the face of anguish, and compassion in the place of animosity.
What does it mean to fight for peace? From the riotous streets in Burma to a prison cell in Vietnam, from the bombed–out streets of Belfast to the refugee camps of Palestine, Scott A. Hunt travels across the globe, often under arduous conditions, to report from the major battles that shaped and continue to shape our world.
Recounting histories that were not taught in school, and uncovering lessons which may have been brushed aside, Scott A. Hunt coaxes out in intimate conversations staggering stories from Vietnam's leading dissident Thich Quang Do, famed primate specialist and humanitarian Dr. Jane Goodall, Cambodia's Supreme Patriarch Maha Ghosananda, Ireland's Nobel Peace Laureate John Hume and other great leaders who have battled to end the brutality against the people and causes they cherish.
In the end, The Future of Peace reveals what it means to remain steadfast to a vision of compassion, to be a leader, and to preserve peace in our own day–to–day lives.
The Future of Peace is an extraordinary investigation that offers far–ranging insights and invaluable lessons – a book that changes the way we think about the world and our responsibility toward one another.
Customer Reviews:
More Relevant Than Ever.......2007-05-30
The perfect antidote to a mindset of vengeance. In this incredibly sexy take on the human condition, writer Scott A. Hunt takes readers down the noble and seemingly enigmatic road to peace. Insightful anecdotes paired with brilliant insights make for a fascinating read. Equally as spiritual as it is documentary; a must read for every contemporary thinking man's library.
Beyond the power of imagination.......2003-12-14
Scott successfully took on a monumental task of understanding the view points of peace makers and people who are caught in today's wars. The book is a journey into the most challenging edges of 21st century human psyche. In this journey, there are seemingly real people who are actors compelled to living out scripts that they don't even know they are living them. But there are some people who are aware. These people come across clear and sound as Scott vividly presents his interactions in most captivating manners - simple but graceful. Scott's intentions come across pure. The information he gathered are eye-opening. The stories he tells are startling.
Scott outstandingly weaves the history of humanists' thoughts. His account of nations' events makes social and science fictions pale in novelty. Facts indeed beget fiction. Can super powers not be aware of their own action? Are peace makers and Nobel Peace laureates simply instruments of time - when the human spirit can no longer endure the incredible injustice?
If you have often asked yourself why people, businesses, and government today have drag the world into the lowest of any moral standards and darkest moments of the human race, this book will be useful to you. It doesn't offers academic answers. It shows you the conditions around the world in a continuity of thought I have not seen. The conversation with the Dalai Lama on non-violence is both amazingly clear and inspiring. It is an account of risk management and decision analysis with enormous grace and solemnity. Expect a team consisting of a journalist, a philosopher, a historian, and a humanist to accomplish anything close to this book. As I put the book down in the stillness of the nights, I am moved beyond the power of my imaginations. - Tom Tuduc
Thought-Provoking and Compassionate.......2003-04-26
Scott Hunt has written a very moving and almost lyrical book in the way in which he blends some of the the worst horrors committed by humans against fellow beings with the compassion and kindliness of the peacemakers. It gives you a deep sense of hope and conviction that the spirit of humanity will tirumph eventually and inspires you to try hard as it may be to embrace the vices of those who still believe in commiting these violent acts.
Marvelouslly,it is also a political eye-opener into the true motivation of the actions taken in the name of peace by the political leaders...
Excellent book.......2003-03-03
This book is excellent in so many ways. Scott Hunt has given us an inspiring book. I learned so much in historical background and in the work of heroic people of our time.
I would urge anyone who wants an understanding of the problems in the world today to buy this book. Once you open it, you will be compelled to read it from cover to cover.
If you believe that the answer to all the issues of the world are simple, and that all the world except the US is bad, than I ask you to open your mind and take a look at the world described in these pages. If you believe that killing only creates more killing and there must be a better way, than allow these stories to provoke your mind.
The most compelling part of this book to me was the discussion of Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge. I ask you to please try and understand how it can be that such a monstrous people can be created, and how such horrible things can be done to human beings. This chapter will leave you wondering how you can ever again accept on the surface the "information" we are given. You will realize the consequences of violence. You will search your mind for answers that are not on the news.
This book is not perfect. I was left wondering more about the history of Costa Rica than I was given, for example. And there are times when Scott explains things more than I would like. I think he could leave his conclusions to the people he interviews. Others may find that that part of the book helps tie things together.
Still, overall the book was outstanding and deserves every bit of 5 stars.
A HUNDRED STAR RATING.......2002-12-20
The "Future of Peace" is perhaps the most compelling book I have ever read. I was very deeply moved by it. Scott A. Hunt is an outstanding writer and interviewer. He asks insightful questions of prominent peacemakers and receives soul searching, thought provoking answers, with overall themes of hope, forgiveness and perseverance. The interviews are more like informal discussions and I almost felt I was right there. He also gives excellent background information on the various areas of conflict where the peacemakers reside, with facts one doesn't learn in school or read/see often in mainstream news. I kept trying to put it down, so as to absorb each chapter, but had to continue to the end, almost nonstop. It is definately a book to read again and again. If all students, political leaders and citizens of the world read it and took the messages to heart, perhaps we could obtain a more peaceful world. In these troubled and treacherous times, Mr. Hunt and the peacemakers give a message that should be spread throughout the world, both heartbreaking and soul inspiring at the same time. If you are wondering whether to buy "The Future of Peace", just do it! You will be so glad you did!
