Book Description
Class Dismissed is a look at the adventures of a high school social studies teacher who hunts around the world. Without the benefit of sponsors or freebies, the author goes on safari in Africa, up to the Canadian provinces and around the fifty states.
This anthology of hunting stories brings humor and excitement to the senses as real life hunts are described as they happen. And most adventures told without too much exaggeration!
Come along on deer, bison, pronghorn antelope and wild boar hunts. Feel the bow in your hand as you venture into the field after game and on many occasions bring home the bacon. No pun intended!
Go on exciting bow hunts for mountain lion and black bear. Feel the mountains while reading about elk hunting.
For the traditional bowhunter, there are stories of first hunts, first deer, many frustrations and sweet victory. For the turkey hunter, here are some hunts that you will appreciate and even laugh as you can relate to the excitement and challenge of the hunt.
Class Dismissed invites family and friends to investigate the outdoors, share in some hunts and witness the majesty of the outdoors. Family stories also show another side of this hunter.

Class Dismissed.......2005-01-11
This book is a wonderful first-person account of the hunting experience. As a sport, it is filled with challenges and danger, but also some very funny moments. Neilson captures all of these well. A hunter in the woods is also given some rare insights into the larger workings of our universe--good ones develop a deep respect for the rituals associated with hunting. The stories are written to convey his experiences clearly and anyone who has ever ventured into the woods in search of game will connect with them.

I really enjoyed this accesory. All the charachters are fleshed out and belivable. Its added a lot to my planescape campaign.
THE PLANESCAPE BOOK THAT DESERVES SEVERAL SEQUELS!.......1999-01-20
This book is alot of fun to read! Instead of just giving game information on the NPCs (Non-Player characters), the reader is also given an idea of each character's believable personality and story. These guys aren't cardboard cut-outs. Before long, the reader starts to feel like they're actual people who live next-door!
The best part is that each characters' story is connected to each other in some sort of indirect network.
TSR did a good job in making a living, breathing book. Not only is this a game reference book, but a well-crafted story book too!
This book also has strong connections to FACTION WAR and IN THE CAGE: A GUIDE TO SIGIL. It also has some connections to the other Planescape products.
Do you know the factions in planescape?.......1998-11-12
In this book you can see people in Sigil that think in very strange forms. people that think in your factions and they living for something.
Best Planescape book around (so far!).......1998-05-20
If you like Planescape, you'll love "Faces". It's certainly my favourite PS release to date; the forty-plus characters described are all incredibly original, detailed and exciting; the artwork's fantastic; and -- the real reason I love this book to pieces -- each character's intricately linked to the others, creating a great web of intrigue and deceit. And that's _exactly_ how I see Sigil. Buy this book. You won't be disappointed.
Great book, Great Help for DM.......1998-03-10
A beautiful work of TSR, the art of Tony D is great, and the stories you read are so interesting that someone may want to put you in the deadbook, for reading them and knowing so much.

Max De Pree, former CEO of Herman Miller and author of two bestselling books that look at business in a decidedly nontraditional manner, now turns his attention to nonprofits and the way they bring out the best in people. Leading Without Power: Finding Hope in Serving Community addresses the possibility of managing through inspiration rather than domination by drawing a distinction between "organizations" and "movements." While some may argue that his theories are a bit too touchy-feely, De Pree's successful corporate background proves that there is more to his ideas than mere rhetorical bombast.
Book Description
Simple yet profound, Max De Pree's observations are often quoted by America's top CEOs, educators, and opinion makers. The best-selling author of Leadership Is an Art and Leadership Jazz, he has done no less than revolutionize leadership thinking and practice. Now, in Leading Without Power, De Pree finds that the most successful organizations of the Information Age operate not as controlled collections of human resources, but as dynamic communities of free people. And in order to mobilize these communities, leaders must know how to lead without power, because free people follow willingly or not at all.
"This is a book to be read, reread, shared widely within any organization. Every chapter has pictures for our mind that will remain vivid long after the book is closed. A vibrant testament to human potential, the why of work."
— Frances Hesselbein, president and CEO, Leader to Leader Institute formerly the Drucker Foundation
De Pree holds up nonprofits as mirrors of our greatest aspirations places where people work for the opportunity to contribute to the common good, and for the chance to realize their full human potential. He calls such organizations movements and challenges others to follow their example. Movements, De Pree maintains, transcAnd ?the deceptive simplicity of a single bottom line? and set standards for leadership and service all organizations should reach for. They lead not with the power of the paycheck or with bureaucratic carrots-and-sticks, but with the promise of meaningful work and lives fulfilled. For that reason, nonprofit or otherwise, they are the most successful organizations of all. Brimming with rich, warm, and wise advice, Leading Without Power takes an enlightened look at the forces that drive selfless accomplishment. It offers encouragement and hope for creating organizations that inspire the very best in people. And it provides leaders at every level with a new context for effecting positive change. Table of Contents:**Places of Realized Potential **What's a Movement? **A Context for Service **What Shall We Measure? **The Language of Potential **Service Has Its Roots **Attributes of Vital Organizations **Vision **Trust Me **Why Risk It? **The Function of Hope **Elements of a Legacy **Moral Purpose and Active Virtue
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read .......2007-01-12
This book is among the best books on leadership ever written. I keep a copy next to my computer at the office and I also have one next to my laptop in the study -- the book is a reference guide for me almost daily. Although written with non-profits in mind, the book speaks to universal truths and eternal concepts -- things that bring fulfillment and meaning to any kind of work. I believe chapter two (What's a Movement?) is the best business book chapter of content I've ever read. It speaks to the importance of higher purpose thinking. Buy it. You'll be glad you did. Buy a bunch and hand them out. They'll be glad you did.
Wisdom for any leader who wishes to endure.......2000-10-18
De Pree presents a philosophy that while in many ways is timeless, is never a cliche. His emphasis upon people, their potential, and the elements present in strong, enduring organizations, will appeal to leaders working in any industry. De Pree offers the reader refreshing thoughts about the importance of service to others in an era of forgotten virtues. It is one of the most elegant and inspiring books I have come across lately.
Powerful Leadership for Nonprofit Organizations!.......2000-08-27
Max De Pree continues to bless us with his insightful books on leadership. In this book he helps us to realize that leading without power works best when it is a movement that is being led, and when leaders focus not on success, but on building a legacy. When we are trying to build a legacy we become competent in establishing and maintaining relationships. A true legacy establishes and sustains an enduring direction.
Leading without power includes a vision that is based on morale purpose and active virtue. Nonprofit organizations without the clear insight they received through empowering vision, fail to realize their potential.
When leading people without power, helping them see their spiritual calling in life is mandatory. Many people are not clear about this essential resource.
I enjoyed this book because I am a highly task-oriented person who prefers to begin my thinking from a left-brain prspective. This book challenged me to think about relationships, and to think from a right-brained perspective. Whether your preferences are tasks or relationships, left brain or right brain, you will find great hope in serving community as you allow the message of this book to transform your leadership style.
A great guide to leading with vision and not sight........1999-03-13
After having read "Leadership is an Art", and "Leadership Jazz", I didn't have an idea that this book would have such a significant impact on my thoughts. Working for a non-profit, this book is such a wonderful guide about what it takes to lead an organization that is more concerned about people and less about profit. This doesn't mean that profit is not important, but what the author does say is that there is a considerable amount of heart and soul that goes into the non-profit sector. I especially recommend the section entitled "What shall we measure." DePree looks at key indicators from a perspective that should be imitated by any company that really wants to captivate its customers and employees. The explanation about the difference between a "movement" and "organization" is also spectacular. A great guide for the future.

Book Description
Karen Armstrong, bestselling author of
A History of God, skillfully narrates this history of the Crusades with a view toward their profound and continuing influence.
In 1095 Pope Urban II summoned Christian warriors to take up the cross and reconquer the Holy Land. Thus began the holy wars that would focus the power of Europe against a common enemy and become the stuff of romantic legend. In reality the Crusades were a series of rabidly savage conflicts in the name of piety. And, as Armstrong demonstrates in this fascinating book, their legacy of religious violence continues today in the Middle East, where the age-old conflict of Christians, Jews, and Muslims persists.
Customer Reviews:
A Necessary Read.......2007-07-29
This book should be required reading for everyone - and especially for those who form policy in our government. Her book illustrates how important it is to remember the past to avoid being condemned to repeat it.
Armstrong deftly unravels the knots of Crusade history and draws parallels with current events. Her clear uncluttered writing make her well balnced analyses easy to follow. This book reminds me somewhat of Barbara Tuchman's excellent book A DISTANT MIRROR. The Glossary of Terms is useful, as are the notes for each chapter. The author makes it clear that we all need to strive for triple vision - the viewpoints of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
At first I was disconcerted by her chapters that jumped from several hunderd years ago to the present and then back again, but then I realized this was the only way to link the past and present problems, and she does an expert job.
Armstrong's evaluation of the Crusades, then colonisalism and finally combative foreign policy spares no one in the assigning of blame. It took me a long time to read the 539 pages carefully, but it was worth every minute. I highly recommend.
Typical Armstrong.......2007-06-25
The saddest part is that pc colleges will probably put this book on their course, and gullible students who know next to nothing about history will walk away believing that the Crusades are the source of all the woe in the Middle East. Most amazing is the tone and adjectives used: when talking about the Muslim conquests which began nearly 500 years BEFORE the Crusades, and which annexed so many formerly Christian lands, including Jeruslamem, her tone is very upbeat, almost as if to say "Allah willed it." When, on the other hand, talking about the Crusades--which were simply a belated response to centuries of Muslim aggression--woe, all is woe! What a massive axe this former nun has to grind!
PC History.......2007-03-28
If a reader wants to see how revisionist historians work they should read this book. The author works hard to use the image of the crusades to support a liberal political stand here in the present. Her book isn't a good read on the crusades nor is it about current politics. Her linkages are inferred and not beyond a reasonable doubt. She also selectively uses facts to support the side in the middle east she likes while ignoring facts that might help one both understand the crusades and current politics. This book is clearly a case of rewriting the past to support the present.
The author starts out with a history on the Crusades then moves to the middle east on two dis similar time periods, 67 and 81 then ends with some rash conclusions. The crusade history is overall weak. It hits the high points and offers little background on the story. From time to time the author does offer some interesting side lights that aren't commonly known. She does do a good piece on the spiritual motivations of the first crusades.
This book tries to do to much and thus accomplishes nothing. It offers little meat on any of the subjects touched, the crusades, growth of islam, British policy towards Israel, revisionist history, the current issues in the middle east or even a leftist analysis of events.
Also the author seems to go out of her way to construct a image of the middle east and islam that benefits the liberal midset but is totally devoid of reality. It ignores basic facts that any common reader would know if they read a paper everyday. The author beats the liberal drum that arabs and the muslim religion then or know is a peace religion. They just want peace and us, the evil west is the source of their troubles. She focuses exclusively on the west slaughters of innocents during the crusades but the muslim attacks were justified and thus all right.
She forgets that islam spread at the edge of a sword in the 600s. This might have been a motivating factor with the crusades. Islam continued to expand up into the 1500s at the tip of spears in a marching army. She also seems to gloss over subjects like how women are treated in islam and the religions acceptance of new ideas like those who want to convert to Christianity or how Salidan used captured Christian boys as slave warriors in his army. The author uses a lot of text to create this image of Islam but has little to do with the crusades. This is to build support a political stand she and others want to use today.
The author seems to want the reader to think all faith based decisions were caused by the crusades. It would have been a lasting historical effect, or it is internal to us in the west. That is the premise of the whole book. She forgets the faith existed way before the first crusade. The decisions she quotes from modern times in the middle east had scores of other things effecting them then the shadow of the crusades or us in the west's uncontrollable desire to crusade. One example in her book is the Balfour declaration of 1918 and Syke Picot decree of World War One. The book seemed to forget a thing called World War One that might have effected that decision a little bit more than the first crusade. Also a decision based off of faith can be motivated by factors other than politics. The author seems not to be able to understand that.
Overall it is a horrible read offering little to everyone including those who might share here liberal point of view.
A Good Introduction. Argue With it, But Read it........2007-01-16
This was actually the first book I read all the way through about the Crusades, and it ignited a real passion in me for that period. It's very well-written. She manages to paint the historical figures as memorable characters who maintain interest throughout the book, rather than a set of names and dates. Ms. Armstrong also impresses with her ability to pluck one central conflict out of lots of historical data. It's her main strength as a writer.
But, as the other reviews indicate, she is not always accurate or fair. The book is biased against Christians, as are all her books, and too favorable to Islam. She seems unable to grasp the concept that both Muslims and Christians suffered from the medieval mindset during the Crusades. The peaceful parts of Jesus and Mohammed's philosophy were always linked with old tribal ideas to conquer and exploit.
I find I disagree somewhat, now, with her main thesis that the Crusades were religiously motivated. A better book might deal with the religious as a part of the complete picture. The fact that Christians and Muslims were just as violent towards their own, in many cases more violent, than they were to each other in the Crusades, is evidence that the "holy war" was a very disposable concept.
But, as I said, this book ignited a fire in me and caused me to seek out other scholarship. I cannot help thinking that those who put this book down in disgust simply can't bear to listen to an argument that contradicts their own.
Read the "tunnel vision" review - I couldn't have said it better........2006-10-25
I was looking for an unbiased factual account of the crusades, and I definitely did not find it in this book. At first, I found myself thinking that the anti-western bias must be my imagination due to my western heritage. However, the anti-western slant became so blatent that I found it impossible to continue reading this book due to the author's wreckless disregard for simply stating fact without bias. I too give it one star for it's only saving grace - the extensive list of references.

Product Description
David Osborne's 1992 bestseller, Reinventing Government, was a landmark book that identified ten principles characteristic of innovative, entrepreneurial, 21st century public organizations and governance. This essential sequel goes one step further, outlining five strategies that have the power to transform public systems and organizations into such organizations, thereby achieving dramatic increases in effectiveness, efficiency, adaptability, and capacity to innovate. In an age of disillusionment with public service, Banishing Bureaucracy offers inspiring stories of organizations that really work and provides specific recipes for effective change. Here is a road map by which reinventors can actually make "reinvention" work.
From Publishers Weekly Osborne, a consultant to local, state and foreign governments, virtually started a national movement with his 1992 bestseller, Reinventing Government (coauthored with Ted Gaebler). Expanding on that handbook's prescriptions for decentralizing authority, benchmarking performance and competitive public-versus-private bidding on government services, he and Plastrik, a Michigan public-sector consultant, have produced an immensely useful manual for transforming unresponsive government bureaucracies-local, state or national-into entrepreneurial systems open to innovation and change. They amplify their five core strategies-clarifying purpose; creating incentives through markets and competition; improving accountability via customer involvement; redistributing power through the hierarchy; nurturing a new culture-with a wealth of case material ranging from Indianapolis's saving of more than $100 million over seven years to Margaret Thatcher's overhaul of Britain's education, health care, unions and public agencies to kindred programs in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. More ambitiously, the authors set forth a heady vision of community empowerment, whereby citizens organize as residents, neighborhood associations, nonprofits and business groups to run schools, housing developments and planning functions.
From Library Journal In this volume, Osborne, coauthor of Reinventing Government (Addison-Wesley, 1992), and Plastrik, a Michigan political strategist, assess the "reinvention" movement and recommend five strategies to institutionalize the process. Using examples from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, they recommend clarifying organizational purposes, creating consequences for organizational performance, becoming customer-driven, empowering workers and communities, and developing an "entrepreneurial culture." The authors also respond to the growing criticism of the "reinvention" movement, acknowledging that the term has often been misunderstood and misapplied. Like Reinventing Government, this volume will fuel the debate over government reform. Essential for specialists in public administration, government officials, and informed lay readers. William L. Waugh, Georgia State Univ., Atlanta

Osborne at his best.......2006-08-01
Although less popular than his earlier "Reinventing Government," Osborne's "Banishing Bureaucracy" has much more to offer. This book tells you how to reinvent government and offers many helpful examples. For leaders who want to actually DO something to improve trust and confidence in government, Banishing is the guidebook for you.

Great Thoughts That Did Not Take Root in USG.......2000-04-09
Well, the Vice President loved it and the President bought into it, but it did not make a difference. The National Performance Review identified a number of substantive objectives for intelligence reform, and the intelligence bureaucracy was successful in ignoring the White House. I suspect it has something to do with one of the fundamentals: "Unleash-but Harness-the Pioneers." The U.S. Intelligence Community can't stand pioneers unless they are spending billions of dollars on something really, really secret that has a high probability of failure. Reinvention boils down to uncoupling or deconstructing a whole bunch of stuff, and then allowing the pieces to compete. It requires managers that can "let go" and employees that can "take hold." Above all, it requires openness and accountability....
Dilbert in Government.......1999-12-19
If you work in a school or another government institution, and if every Dilbert cartoon is one you want to cut out and post, then read this book.
Working in an absurd environment is funny on the surface but it also can be deeply depressing. This books shows us how we can do something about it.
This is a handbook for fighting the good fight for the return of a little sanity in the government workplace.
More tired management gobbledgook.......1998-07-01
Please let's move on from the nonsense of these kinds of government guru books! Our governments are already messed up enough to have our government officials follow this advice.

Book Description
Practical Approaches to the Conservation of Biological Diversity clearly explains the importance of biodiversity conservation for natural resource professionals and students. It brings together in a single volume information on a range of scientific and management approaches, and provides useful and workable guidelines for conserving biodiversity in a broad array of settings and under a variety of circumstances.
Following an introductory section that examines the concept of biological diversity, its historical context, and its importance to humans, the book presents a general discussion of approaches to biodiversity conservation along with detailed description and analysis of a variety of specific strategies. For each strategy, contributors introduce theoretical background and context, explore specific techniques and assumptions, identify complications and other considerations, and discuss advantages and disadvantages.
Specific approaches considered include:
- bioreserve strategies
- emphasis area strategies
- coarse filter strategies based on habitat diversity and on historical ranges of variability
- fine filter strategies
- coarse filter/fine filter combinations
Each chapter examines the theory underlying the strategy being discussed, followed by a case studies of real-world application of that strategy. Among the case studies are the Legacy project in northern California, the Gap Analysis Program, Prairie CARE in the Canadian prairie provinces, and others.
The book examines typical real-world constraints, criticisms, and related management problems that often arise, and provides alternative solutions and options for managers to consider in those situations. It ends with a summary overview of the information presented and a discussion of future directions and innovations in biodiversity conservation.
