5 out of 5 stars workingmans narrative of oil field activities.......1999-06-25

This is the only book I can think of that is written from the point of view of a working man. Mr. Lynch worked on drilling rigs from the early days until the eighties. He has a lot of love for his life in the oil field. I loaned my copy of the book to a man who had also worked in the oil field and he was fasinated with its reality. The book taught me a lot about how oil is found. I live in an oil field but did not know much about the nuts and bolts of the drilling process. I have seen industries and ways of life pass away without a word being written about how the work was performed and how the workers related to one another. Large populations of workers have gone away leaving no written word of what they did. This is a book that develops a story of how people in the oil field lived and worked. It is not written from the point of view of bankers, corporation executives or office clerks.

        Book Description

Traditionally, film critics have concentrated on the director, seeing feature filmmaking as a form of individual expression. The authors challenge this view, arguing that filmmaking is a form of collection expression. They examine the idea that many individuals, including editors, cinematographers and sound designers, contribute to the making of a film, and argue that it is misleading to classify them as technicians. The authors consider is how money and power determines the structure within which all those involved with filmmaking work. And, in challenging the accepted view of the dynamics of filmmaking, the book raises questions about the nature of the feature film. Is it essentially a visual form? What place does it have? How important is the script? Making Films in Contemporary Hollywood contains analysis, interviews and case studies of Chinatown, Jurassic Park, and When Harry Met Sally, bringing a fresh perspective to the study of filmmaking that will be both informative and provocative for Media and Film Studies students at all levels.

3 out of 5 stars OK but not first hand........2007-07-28

Cass wasn't there a lot of the time.
Too much 'secondhand' knowledge, to keep me gripped for long. But an easy read and entertaining all the same.
I'd like to read more of what these people are thinking and feeling, than just related events.
Cass, Gardner, Swallow, Leach and co, write your stuff 'first hand' - it would be facinating.
No doubt these books are the life breath of DVDs like 'Green Street' or 'Football Factory'; both of which bear no resemblence to what really went (goes) on.
Buy 'Good Afternoon, Gentlemen, the Name's Bill Gardner' by Bill Gardner and Cass Pennant - good read. Gardner is a diamond. Totally loyal to WHU and all it stands for. He certainly has my resect.
West Ham usually win in their battles. A tough bunch indeed.
They are definitely the second hardest firm since the Great War.
The hardest being Millwall of course. Always outnumbered, never outdone. Sounds like a good title for a MFC book.
If you REALLY want to know about WHU, buy Bobby Moore: By the Person Who Knew Him Best by Tina Moore. A GREAT read. He is WHU.
Lord Moore of Dagenham, I refer to him as.

3 out of 5 stars interesting read .......2007-01-27

the book was a interesting read a little one sided i have years of experience in these sort of things and felt we only heard one side of the story. Otherwise very entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars ALL ONE WAY TRAFFIC.......2007-01-03

FOUND THIS BOOK VERY INTERESTING BUT IT WAS ALL ONE WAY TRAFFIC.. I REALY GOT INTO ALL THE STORIES AND IMAGINED AT TIMES I WAS ACTUALLY THEIR INVOLVED WITH EVERYTHING THAT WAS GOING ON.. THE ONLY DISAPPOINTING THING WAS THE FACT THEY NEVER SEEMED TO GET DONE. THEY ALSO SEEMED TO BELITTLE THEIR CLOSEST RIVALS AT TIMES BUT I MUST ADMIT THEY WERE AT THE TIME AWESOME BUT NOT INDESTRUCTABLE AS THIS BOOK LEADS YOU TO BELEIVE.

        4 out of 5 stars Interesting Insight.......2005-11-28

I have been very interested in the 'hooligan' culture that pervaded English football not long ago. As all of the former brawlers are now out of the fight scene, many of them have turned to writing about their exploits. After reading about how notoriously tough the West Ham firm were, it was time to hear about them from the source.

Cass Pennant, the author of the book, would almost be better considered the editor. Much of this book is actually a collection of recollections from other members of the famous I.C.F., so you'll see the book dominated by pages in italics. Whether these were transcribed in-person interviews or if the members wrote them out and submitted them I can't tell, but this constant shuffling between different 'speakers' did get a bit distracting.

It is also worth mentioning that it does indeed feel when you're reading it that these guys were unstoppable, that nowhere do they ever say they were beaten. Now, not being there myself, I can't say whether they ever were or weren't but I did get to wondering occassionally towards the end of the book when every battle went their way.

Despite this, it was a very interesting read, and the way that the interviews are included actually use the language of the subjects ("He looked 'a nice feller") so you do feel immersed. The print also is a bit larger so despite the size, it is also a very quick read. Course, being as interested in the subject matter as I was makes it go even quicker.

All in all, a recommended read on the subject of hooliganism.

        1 out of 5 stars Stop Havin' A Larf!.......2005-02-05

If Cass Pennant came up against 500 people with just him and his mate the 500 people would come off worse, well that's if your to believe this book. It's a good read but he does exagerate and it should be in the fiction section. Those Cockney's do like to bend the truth.

        Book Description

A former company executive explains the guiding philosophies of the global retail giant ALDI, whose 50-year history and successful spinoff Trader Joe's has made it a corporate leader on the scale of Wal-Mart and General Electric. Simplicity, not discount, is discussed as the answer to the company's driving question Why should customers visit your store? The corporate culture, philosophy, working principles, and organizational methods of ALDI are explained as the major factors for the company's extraordinary growth and success. This insider's perspective on the company offers lessons on consumer retailing and management that will be useful to aspiring business professionals.

5 out of 5 stars The INSIDE story.......2005-09-15

Brandes worked as a ALDI director and set up ALDI in Holland amongst other things. I read the book in German and it is great. A must if you work in retail. Brandes worked at Aldi and wrote this book to strengthen the company's "institutional memory".

5 out of 5 stars Less is more: the ascetic culture of a low-cost retail giant.......2004-10-12

This book is the untold inside story from a former executive of German retail discount giant Aldi. Some of the advices that I recall from the German edition are the following (they are all interrelated):

ASCETICISM AS A BASIC PRINCIPLE. This word is usually connected to people avoiding physical pleasures and comforts, esp. for religious reasons (e.g. monks). In this context, it's more focused on what you can do without: headquarters, external market study, management consultants, and highly complex information technology. Instead Aldi focuses on a simple price strategy (everyday-low-price), undifferentiated product assortment, and avoid luxury.

THRIFTINESS AS A GUIDING PRINCIPLE. Everybody's talking about cost consciousness, but at Aldi this is second nature. There's a continuous avoidance of unnecessary costs on all levels.

INTERNAL RECRUITING OF HIGH-LEVEL MANAGERS. This principle is also recognised in bestseller "Good to Great". It's also a strong signal to internal candidates that they can expect to be next in line ... so be patient, you're time will come. The principle makes sure that top-managers fit the company culture. The negative effect is that you occasionally will be lacking the fresh eyes from outside.

LIVE THE DECENTRALISED ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE. Aldi believes that the most efficient enterprise exists, when the overall direction set by the central unit is clear and remainder of the decisions are left to the decentralized organization - closer to where the action is.

MAKE A VIRTUE OF A NECESSITY. Many firms focus on doing some things unusually well. That's not necessary. The best service is often just doing the obvious and necessary tasks in a simple way.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTS. Instead of believing in huge cost cutting exercises or grandiose concepts like business process reengineering, Aldi believes in all employees' ideas to reducing costs. They are close to day-to-day work and can best evaluate what needs to be done to continually make things simpler and less expensive. This idea is closer to the [Japanese] quality concept of continuous improvement (evolution) than any [American] management fads on cost reduction based on organizational revolutions or merger-mania.

STICK TO YOUR KNITTING. Do only what you can do really well. Retailers are to trade with consumers; producers are to produce. Don't diversify, stick to the core business. Concentration is important for efficiency.

NO PUBLIC APPEARANCES. The attitude is that the public information is useful only to the competition. The managers' self-manifestation won't bring any competitive advantage for Aldi. This principle probably only works, since it's a private company. In the brave new world of war for talent and capital, this attitude probably will have to be adjusted.

SIMPLICITY IN PRACTICE. Avoid strong central staff and a big headquarters. The practice in the line of business is much more important than any theoretical staff work. Line managers do all special tasks. Focus on lean organizational hierarchies, clear decision authority, clear targets, and simple execution.

If you want to understand some of these productivity principles by low-cost companies better, let me recommend that you also check out "Less is more" by Jason Jennings. The companies cited in that book are Ikea, Ryanair, The Warehouse, Nucor, etc.

By popularizing electronic music, Grammy Award winning artist Trent Reznor rewired the mainstream with his act Nine Inch Nails.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Parts of it may bug the hell out of you.......2007-01-03

Nine Inch Nails is Tommy Udo's biography about the band with the same name and its founder Trent Reznor, beginning with the birth of electronic music long before Mr. Reznor came along, his musical trials and errors before the release of Pretty Hate Machine, all the way up to double album The Fragile and DVD And All That Might Have Been which came out a few years ago. Udo himself is a fan, which isn't much of a surprise, I guess. Still, he's not a fanatic, but rather is of the opinion that Reznor and his ideas have had such an important part in the history of music that he deserves to have a book written about him.

And he's right, of course. One may love or hate Reznor's contributions to the world of music, but no one can dispute the fact that he's had an enormous impact and has been, and still is, a huge influence on countless musicians all over the world.

Still, Nine Inch Nails feels more like a summary than a biography.

Reznor isn't the one with the longest career in the music business, but throughout the 232 pages of the book Udo nonetheless fails to get into any kind of depth when it comes to Reznor and his music. In all fairness it should be mentioned that Udo never claims to have written the ultimate biography, which is quite fortunate, because then the end result would have been truly horrible, instead of how it is right now: semi-bad.

A freakishly large part of the text is made up of quotes from different magazines, and more or less every single one of these quotes have one or more errors or typos that not even an apprentice proof-reader should ever have missed. The continuous use of various quotes do result in one getting the feeling that Udo really doesn't have any personal opinions about Reznor and his music and instead simply relies on what other believe. It really does give the appearance of being the easy way out, and the innumerable typos and grammatical errors soon become a massive nuisance.

Udo might be the most passionate fan out there, but passion doesn't always automatically lead to great results.

is a book that many fans might appreciate, but the lack of depth is sure to piss many people off, too. I wasn't looking for anything but an overview, so to me it was OK. But still far from great.

        1 out of 5 stars Horrible...just simple horrible........2004-11-12

Do not read this book at all. It is very horrible and within the first couple chapters I felt like burning it. It is very in accurate and is not worth a single dollar.

3 out of 5 stars More about things NIN related, then actually about NIN.......2003-04-02

I bought this book in my continual search for information on my favorite band, Nine Inch Nails. And this book certainly had a lot of information to provide me with. However, the format used almost got to the point of being annoying.

What this book does it introduce a subject (the production of Pretty Hate Machine for example), mention that it heavily used synthesizers, then go into the history of synthesizers. After 2 pages, then it gets back to the topic at hand. And while sometimes I was intrigued by the information provided (say, for FLOOD), most times it was something that either didn't need to be mentioned in a book about Trent Reznor, or could be in a book about the industrial music movement.

I used the same method in my senior composition class to pad papers, but in this case it wasn't warranted.

Come to think of it, the book tries at times to be an all encompassing encyclopedia of industrial music, which isn't why I bought it at all. I suppose I'm more knowledgeable about it because of the information provided, but it wasn't by choice.

The information about NIN is fascinating, and ends with the recording of their live album "And All That Could Have Been." Overall, I liked the book, but could have lived without the extraneous information about everything under the sun.

3 out of 5 stars Good, yet get more information.......2003-03-04

I wouldn't say I am a fanatic Nin fan but a really really big fan. Tommy Udo wrote a great book it gives a lot of good information and goes over the history pretty well. But He made a mistake. There is a part in one of the first chapters where he is explaing the albums. And he said that the Live Album was called And All That Might Have Been. When in fact it is titled And All That Could Have Been. And he takes quotes out of context. Where one time he says that Trent Said. "I see that I am saving Rock n' Roll. billy Corgan failed, now it's all up to me." He said that in this context "people are saying that I see that I am saving Rock n' Roll, Billy Corgan Failed, so it's up to me whenI really don't ever like Rock that much". Great book though, he just needs to leave thigns the way they are.

It only takes the reading of a few pages to realize that this is anything but an unbiased look at the events leading up to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The author's obvious hatred of the Bush administration is evident after only reading a few pages and what is being touted as "scholarly research" is nothing more than a bunch of newspaper and magazine articles formed into a book. This doesn't make the work scholarly, it makes the author lazy. The author himself, in the acknowledgement section, even admits he had "volunteers" help him write portions of the book. If you really want to know what terrorism is about, without the political spin, I recommend "The Age of Sacred Terror" by Daniel Benjamin and Steven Simon or "Voices of Terror" by Walter Laqueur. "The Age of Sacred Terror" will give any real scholar of terrorism a much greater insight into the history of terrorism and how that leads to what happened on 9/11. "Voices of Terror" is a great collection of writings by the most notorious terror organizations like Al Qaeda and Hamas and this too will give great insight into the thinking of the leaders of such organizations. Both offer a more unbiased look at terrorism and its relationship to 9/11. If you are doing any type of research and you are planning to use this book---save your money.

Item arrived quickly and in great condition. My husband is enjoying reading it. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed, accessible, and exhaustively researched.......2007-03-14

Thompson's masterful research project has birthed a resource of immense value to those desirous of an accurate history of the 9/11 tragedy. Each bit of information is followed immediately by its source, and there are nearly 600 pages of relevant documentation in this volume. Thompson's book is, as advertised, comprehensive and thought-provoking. You will not be carrying it in your shirt pocket, but you will want to page through several sections of the book every week, in order to understand the enormity both of 9/11 and of the curious and catastrophic U.S. responses to it.

          5 out of 5 stars A 9/11 Study Must.......2007-01-21

For anyone interested in performing an in-depth study of the heinous 9/11 attacks on our nation and our hearts, this book is an absolutely essential starting forum. One can easily surmise the heart-felt dedication of this author and the learning of the basic structure of evil of those who planned, financed and forced this on our country. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Terror Timeline .......2007-01-04

This a great book to use as reference and is laid out in a manner that even a person that does not keep up with the International news can understand and follow. The writer does not give his own ideas and thoughts, he only uses content from other magazines and news publishers. Probably one of the best books I have ever read in regards to the 911 attack, and one that everyone should read and be able to form their own opinion in regards to 911 and our government.

            Acclaim for Armey's Axioms

"As I read Armey's Axioms, my mind immediately went to the man from Springfield, Abraham Lincoln, who cloaked brilliant wisdom with grace and good humor that had its roots in the heartland of America. Without question, Dick Armey is one of the most brilliant and principled men ever to serve in the leadership of the United States House of Representatives. His axioms are a delightful read for anyone seeking to understand the faith, the patriotism, and the integrity that has made America great."
            -Dr. M. G. "Pat" Robertson

"In Armey's Axioms, Dick Armey gives us more than his great sense of humor and Texas-size common sense. With a creative and personal touch, it is the best advice I've seen for those who want to make it in Washington, and even better for those who want to make it in life."
            -Bob Dole

"We Americans like to cut to the chase when it comes to difficult issues. In Armey's Axioms, Dick Armey does just that. By skillfully breaking down complex social and moral issues, he presents us with such simple and direct answers that it's hard not to agree with his logic. Wrapped in wry wit and humor, the book is wise, insightful, and above all, compelling."
            -Marlin Maddoux
President, National Center for Freedom & Renewal
host, Point of View radio talk show

"In just ten years, Dick Armey moved from C-SPAN viewer to Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives. In Armey's Axioms he presents some of the lessons he has learned from his years in the House and from country music. . . . It's a good read, packed with good advice."

5 out of 5 stars Even A Democrat Can Appreciate It.......2004-01-30

As a yellow dog Democrat it pains me to say it, but I have a new admiration for Dick Armey after reading this book. It is rare to get a glimpse of a politician that reveals his or her humanity, but I actually got that sense in reading Armey's Axioms. Even for those us of who may believe that government plays a necessary and vital role in assuring the common good and care for the most marginalized in our society there is sage advice about honor and integrity to be learned from Armey's book. I highly recommend it much to the chagrin of my fellow Democrats. It's too bad we didn't always see this side of Dick Armey while he was in office but it's good to know there was a good man in Washington even if I didn't always agree with him on policy. I wish I could say that about the current Majority Leader, Tom DeLay, but I doubt he's ever had an original thought and probably lacks the ability to even write a book.

4 out of 5 stars The Idea is Bigger Than the Man.......2004-01-05

Overall I found this book by Dick Armey to be interesting, well thought out, and introspective, despite a couple of faults. I will deal with the strengths first, and the faults second.

The book is easy to read, and contains a lot of good analysis. Particularly pleasing is the extensive analysis, comparison, and contrast between liberals and conservatives. This is particularly well developed in Axioms 21 and 23, 'Liberals love feelings too much', and 'Conservatives believe it when they see it, Liberals believe it when they believe it'. His arguments are cogent and fact based, and he does not resort to name calling at any point. To a fault, he is respectful of his opposition, to the point of praising noted liberal reporter David Broder of the 'Washington Post' for honest journalism and high standards.

I respect that that Armey is up front and comfortable in his religion. He gives the credit for his success to God from the outset, which I respect. I believe that given his personal convictions, that he presents his religious views well, and is a credit to himself and his church (I believe that he is a Presbyterian, by the way).

The book generally stays away from bashing opponents by name (except for Charlie Rangel, who Armey must really dislike) which I believe is generally good policy, but he takes it to the point of annoyance. He frequently refers to 'a member of the opposing party', or something similar, which I presume is out of courtesy, but often makes the book more difficult to follow in specific matters. I appreciate candor, and if a story needs background, I would appreciate naming names so as to better judge the wisdom being imparted. My second irritant is the claimed enormous 'success' of his cherished military base closing legislation (BRAC) that he pushed in his first term in congress. I do not endorse the necessity of military service for congressional or other political service (in fact, I am annoyed with the hypocrisy of those that slam Dick Armey for not having been in the military, but say that is was unimportant that Bill Clinton had not served) but I do think that to write legislation as significant as BRAC, it would have been appropriate to have either served in the military, or extensively called on others that had in developing the bill. The closing of "redundant and wasteful military bases" is presented in terms of a great money saving idea designed to make government smaller. In reality BRAC has proved not quite as apolitical as Armey claims, and may, in the long run, harm our defense posture in part. In fact, the horse trading done in Washington over which bases to close has never gone away, and genuinely horrible decisions (like closing Williams AFB in AZ, the biggest, most productive pilot training base with the highest number of good weather flying days annually, while keeping open Columbus AFB, MS and Vance AFB, OK which have vastly less productivity) have frequently been the hallmarks of BRAC. Do not misunderstand my point: there was excess military base capacity. It is simply not clear (or in fact true) that the most suitable bases were the ones always abandoned.

All in all this is a well conceived book with a lot of important lessons between its covers. He is not, nor does he try to be politically correct, which is refreshing for a politician today. He is proud of his conservatism and takes the blows aimed at him as badges of honor, as perhaps best summed up in this quote: "The first rule of conservatism is that if you are true to yourself, Susan Sarandon will never hug you in public." No doubt in his case, that is quite true. I started the book with mixed feelings about Dick Armey, and despite the flaws mentioned above, I finished it with much greater respect for him and his ideas.

            1 out of 5 stars A fraud and a hypocrite!.......2003-11-22

Mr. Armey is my age and like me he says he loves freedom - ("true freedom carries with it responsibility and accountability") Yet unlike me and others of my generation who were in the military either voluntarily or through conscription, Armey never served his country. Which makes his claim that he is a patriot ring so hollow. Mr. Armey, if you claim to be a patriot and love freedom, why did you not serve your country? What happened to your "responsibility and accountability? You, sir, are nothing but a hypocrite asking others to stand up for freedom while you were `exempt' from the draft. Shame on your sir! Grow up and be a man!

5 out of 5 stars Haters Hate It, So If You're Open-Minded..........2003-10-18

you'll love it! And if so, please write a positive review. The fact that the rating for this book is dragged down by reviews from those that dislike Armey is unfair. It's also a sign that the book has struck a nerve. This is a great common sense book that everyone with common sense will enjoy. So if you're close-minded or don't like common sense, you won't like it. Otherwise, this book is for you.

            5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2003-09-30

This is a great book! Real lessons learned and sage wisdom from a true leader. Apart from making me smile (and even laugh out loud at times!) this book really gave me hope that the cause of Freedom as originally conceived by our Founding Fathers can be acheived. As Armey's "Ultimate Axiom" reads: "Freedom Works!"

              Book Description

Coast lines have been and still are the centre lines of civilization around the world with still increasing pressure from both sides, the hinterland and the sea, with all its foreseeable and unforeseeable impacts given by nature or mankind. While response of nature to such impacts is flexible in the way that all morphological changes with all the consequences are tolerated as part of the system, man cannot tolerate short-term or long-term changes without being threatened in its physical and economical existence. The objectives of this Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Environmentally Friendly Coastal Structures were: - to contribute to the critical assessment of existing knowledge in the field of coastal and environmental protection; - to identify directions for future research in that area; - to promote close working relationships between scientists from different countries and with different professional experience. Latest trends in research in coastal and environmental protection have been summarized and developed during the meeting. Seventeen papers are presented in this book, attempting to cover as completely as possible all related aspects – coast, engineering structures, water, sediments, ecosystems in their complicated interaction.
