5 out of 5 stars Stanley H. Kaplan - Test Pilot.......2002-02-23

The only thing wrong with this passionate memoir by test-pioneer Stanley H. Kaplan, is the title. It sounds like it's a book about an air-force test pilot. In fact the feisty and fascinating teacher, and author of the eponymous memoir is an academic Horatio Alger, someone who developed his obsessive need to help others learn into a billion-dollar empire with global reach. Is there anyone who has not heard of Kaplan Centers, Kaplan S.A.T? Stanley H Kaplan was just a bit brighter than everyone else in Brooklyn seventy years ago when he began tutoring students in his basement. In his eighties today, and feisty as ever, he will stop on a dime to answer the questions of any kid on the street who is having difficulty with an algebra problem. If you want to be entertained, inspired, amused, and impressed by a master teacher and raconteur, a genuine original who tells your the real skinny about how he beat the odds and conquered the world, "Stanley H. Kaplan - Test Pilot" is the book for you.

Book Description

This book details the Paul Tracy story: Paul Tracy was just a youngster when he discovered fast cars. Growing up in West Hill, Ontario, Paul dreamt of his hero Gilles Villeneuve, and when his father left him at the local go-kart track with a full tank of gas each morning, he retrieved Paul-and the empty tank-at night. Tracy rose quickly through racing's minor leagues, setting and breaking records as he went. At 17 he was racing cars with twice the horsepower of the family cars his friends were just learning to drive. Veteran team managers and drivers knew they were seeing someone special on the track: a quiet kid with the looks of a boy scout and the desire of a champion. Soon Tracy dominated kart racing, won at Can-Am racing, and ruled Indy Lights. He then stormed into the Championship Auto Racing Team circuit, racing wheel to wheel with Emerson Fittipaldi and Mario Andretti. In those early races, even driving an underpowered car, Tracy proved he could run with the big boys. But Paul Tracy's success has come with its share of hardships. His aggressive driving style on the cart circuit has made almost as many enemies as fans. He's been criticized, penalized, and vilified both on and off the track. Nevertheless, two things remain consistent-his desire to drive fast, and his desire to win.

3 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes.......2002-03-06

I am a Paul Tracy fan since his early Indy Lights days and was excited to see a book written about him. I wanted to know a little bit more about him and I think I have from the book, but there are too many mistakes in the book. In one chapter, Paul debuts for Team Penske at Michigan International Speedway in 1991, which is right, but in the next chapter his debut at MIS happened in 1992, which is wrong. His famous hero dance occured after winning in Long Beach, not Houston. There are at least six
mistakes concerning the Indianapolis 500. The pictures are good.

2 out of 5 stars Never Too Fast and Rarely Personal.......2001-11-30

As a huge Paul Tracy and CART fan, I looked forward to reading this book about one of the most controversial drivers on the circuit, hoping to get an up close and personal view of the driver and what makes him tick.
I was disappointed. Mr. Ferriss seems to spend most of the time waving the Canadian Flag, sugar coating interviews, and reporting race results that could have been gotten from the newspaper and enthusiast publications. Compared to the driver's actual life, this book doesn't even come close to having anything controversial. In actuality, for the length of the book, there really aren't that many quotes from direct interviews with Paul. It appears to me, that Paul had very little input on this book project. We do learn that Paul wants his privacy.
If so, why bother writing about him?

      Book Description

Back in print, the groundbreaking classic on robber-rebels from "the best known living historian in the world" (The Times [London]). First published in 1969, the now-classic Bandits inspired a whole new field of historical study and brought its author popular acclaim. Bandits transcend the label of criminals; they are robbers and outlaws elevated to the status of avengers and champions of social justice. Some, like Robin Hood, Rob Roy, and Jesse James, are famous throughout the world, the stuff of story and myth. Others, from Balkan haiduks and Indian dacoits to Brazilian congaceiros, are known only to their own countries' people. In his celebrated study of these fascinating figures, now updated with a new introduction, Eric Hobsbawm, "one of the few genuinely great historians of our century," according to the New Republic, spans four hundred years and four continents, setting these folk heroes against the ballads, legends, and films they have inspired. The result is "a dazzling historical squib, fizzing with ideas and strange stories" (The Guardian).

      2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-01-04

While this book does cover several aspects of banditry, it does not concentrate on one specific geographical area and therefore makes global conclusions. These conclusions are not always accurate, I feel.

4 out of 5 stars A good time telling stories about bandits by the campfire.......2002-08-26

Not Hobsbawm's deepest work, but a fun one, to be sure. In a quick and lively read, Hobsbawm takes the reader through anecdotes and ballads about "social bandits," a la Robin Hood: bandits with a social conscience, or at least they are remembered that way.

The global scale of such banditry is both interesting (seems like peasants everywhere celebrate the guy who steals from the rich to give to the poor), but ultimately thin. Are bandits generalizable from Brazil to China to the Balkans? Hmmm.

Having read the original _Bandits_ and the new one, I can say that the revised edition is better, as it includes some nice discussion about the political economy of social banditry, and addresses other criticisms lodged by scholars over the years. Now we see bandits in light of power, class, and politics, which helps to make the book a more serious, though still lightweight, contribution to social theory.

5 out of 5 stars High Quality Stuff by Hobsbawm, as Always.......2000-10-07

This is not the last book written by Mr Hobsbawm, but a neccesary and expected reedition of a 60's vintage opus, with some addendas and improvements. As always, high quality is the mark of this reputed scholar. It has been so with every book written by him that I have ever read. Clearly he always has known how to give us, history geeks and scholar alike, crisp writting, deep insight of men and circunstances and the big sociologic picture inside which all get sense, but that never is too far of the little things - if so can be called particular human lives- that give blood to a really good history book. I have never been dissapointed by Mr Hobsbawm and I am sure I never will. Great book, sharp writting, smart understanding.

A beautifully designed and produced book, Teach Yourself Microsoft Office 2000 Visually defines state-of-the-art presentation in how-to software books for beginners. With its truly helpful full-color illustrations, intelligent text, and logical organization, this book will improve the skills of anyone new to Office 2000.

Teach Yourself Microsoft Office 2000 Visually covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher, and Outlook. Generally, the authors concentrate on the fundamentals of each application, such as formatting text in Word, inserting columns into an Excel worksheet, and re-sequencing PowerPoint slides. Most new Office 2000 users will gravitate toward the standard tasks described in the book when introduced to the software.

For each of the covered software capabilities, the authors present a graphic that encapsulates the concept at hand (such as a crane dropping information into a spreadsheet to illustrate the idea of inserting columns). They then show a series of screen shots, enhanced with commentary explaining how the task is done in the program itself. It's easy to follow the book's lead on your own computer.

Once in a while, the authors choose to omit relevant details for the sake of their simplified format. That's okay, but this book would be stronger if it included references to other books with more detailed information. Overall, however, this is a superior book on the critical fundamentals of working with Office 2000. --David Wall

As a teacher both in the public schools and as a corporate contractor, I could not advocate this book higher. It has become the course book of choice for my students and is better suited for starting computer users and intermediate level users than ANYTHING else I have found.

As an aid to teaching, for self instuction and at times as a reference for the starting user, this title is invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars Good Place to Start.......2001-07-04

This is a very good book for novice to beginners who know how to use only the obvious features. This book introduces you to a good foundation of details. As the level of the book is Beginner to Intermediate,as stated on the book itself, you will need to read another book on Office 2000 for Intermediate to Advance skills. But this is a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Teach Yourself Microsoft Office 2000 Visually.......1999-12-09

I feel that this book is the best book for learning Office 2000. It is easy, but has a lot of information. I have never seen a better computer book, and I hope they make more like this. This book is for people who know older Office programs and those who are trying Office for the first time. If you really want to learn it fast and easlly try this book. Book Description

The Untold Story of the American Entrepreneur Who Helped Build the Atomic Bomb and Defeat the Nazis.

Legendary financier, philanthropist, and society figure Alfred Lee Loomis gathered the most visionary scientific minds of the twentieth century -- Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg, Niels Bohr, Enrico Fermi, and others -- at his state-of-the-art laboratory in Tuxedo Park, New York, in the late 1930s. He established a top-secret defense laboratory at MIT and personally bankrolled pioneering research into new, high-powered radar detection systems that helped defeat the German Air Force and U-boats. With Ernest Lawrence, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist, he pushed Franklin Delano Roosevelt to fund research in nuclear fission, which led to the development of the atomic bomb.

Jennet Conant, the granddaughter of James Bryant Conant, one of the leading scientific advisers of World War II, enjoyed unprecedented access to Loomis' papers, as well as to people intimately involved in his life and work. She pierces through Loomis' obsessive secrecy and illuminates his role in assuring the Allied victory.

          Amazon.com

This must have been an extremely difficult book to write. Its subject, Alfred Loomis, never gave interviews during his lifetime and destroyed all his papers before his death. "Few men of Loomis' prominence and achievement have gone to greater lengths to foil history," writes author Jennet Conant. Had he not done these things, his name would be better known--and this probably wouldn't be the first biography about him. So who was Alfred Loomis? "He was too complex to categorize--financier, philanthropist, society figure, physicist, inventor, amateur, dilettante--a contradiction in terms," writes Conant. Loomis established a private laboratory in New York and hired scientists whose work in the 1930s wound up making possible both the radar and the atomic bomb. These developments were essential to Allied victory in the Second World War. Conant is perhaps the only person who could have pierced Loomis's obsessive secrecy and written this book; she grew up with Loomis's children and other members of his family. Her grandfather, Harvard president James Bryant Conant, was one of Loomis's scientists. Tuxedo Park is an important book about the development of military technology in the United States; admirers of The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes and similar titles won't want to miss it. --John Miller

5 out of 5 stars What an amazing book.......2007-07-01

Being a very big history buff, I was shocked to find out about the little-known contribution of a single patriotic individual that totally changed the progress of the war. This book is a must read for all! Extremely well written to entice the reader and present the facts; personal as well as historical.

5 out of 5 stars Achievement with a Capital "A"?.......2007-06-03

Having been a Radarman in the Vietnam War, I found the gensis of radar and the man responsible for it and many other things in life. Albert Loomis was a giant in the first half of the 20th Century and under the radar. He may have been bigger in the first half of the century than Bill Gates was in the second half. But, you won't know why until you read the book and understand the magnitude of his impact on America and the World then and now.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most important men in US history.......2006-12-14

Chances are you have never heard of Alfred Loomis before this book but you will not forget him once you have read it. This man is truly one of the most influential people in US history. A modern day renaissance man who made millions in the stock market before 1929 and was a genius scientist who developed modern radar technology. He established a lab at Tuxedo Park where he hosted scientists who would work on a variety of projects. While he was not directly connected to the Manhattan project many of the things worked on at his lab were eventually essential for the project. He worked closely with Vannavear Bush to bring over radar technology that would be invaluable for both sub hunting and eventually air defense in World War 2. This scientist even left his mark in World War 1 helping to develop new ways to fire artillery. If you want an interesting story this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Have we lost the spark?.......2006-12-05

Alfred Loomis was a bona fide "Wall Street tycoon" who made his fortune in the 1920s by helping to organize the financing for the electrification of America and had the foresight to sell out before the stock market crash in 1929. Thereafter, he became an amateur scientist who cultivated the best and the brightest in the scientific world and maintained a laboratory complex in an enclave of the wealthy named Tuxedo Park.

As the Second World War approached our shores, this activity became increasingly urgent - no longer the indulgence of a rich and brilliant man's fancy, but a matter of great national importance. The die was cast when Loomis's older cousin and long-time mentor, Henry Stimson, was appointed by President Roosevelt as Secretary of War.

Loomis assumed responsibility for a newly created laboratory at MIT that developed sophisticated new radar systems (building on work that had been done in England) at breakneck speed that played a vital role in winning the war. He also supported the atomic bomb program, in this case acting as a collaborator with and expediter for the people directly responsible.

It would be hard to imagine a more vivid account of the key people in this saga, the challenges they faced (including getting around bureaucratic budget rules and overcoming irrational objections), and their inestimable contribution to our country's victory. They weren't perfect human beings, and their accomplishments would leave the world with many new problems. Still, we can and should be proud and inspired by the things that they accomplished.

Do our leaders today have the same knack for figuring out the things that need to be done and going after them? One wonders, given the long-term gridlock that has developed around many key technical issues such as building new refineries in the United States, developing untapped oil and gas reserves in Alaska and offshore areas, and even getting clearance to deepen the shipping channel in the Delaware River from 40 to 45 feet.

Why are U.S., firms racing to "outsource" their manufacturing operations to China, India, etc.? The answer is not hard to figure out, and the long-term consequences will not be to our liking.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on WWII, RADAR and MIT Rad Lab.......2006-11-09

A friend gave me this book because he knew I grew up in Boston and thought I would like it. As it turns out it is an amazing story about Alfred Loomis and his contributions to Radar in WWII and the starting of the MIT Rad Lab that was the predecessor of MIT Lincoln Labs. As it turns out my father worked on radar and other projects at MIT Lincoln Labs and it was great to read how that all came about.

          This is a fascinating book.

5 out of 5 stars The Optimistic Jew.......2007-08-31

This is an anthology of works by major Zionist thinkers. It introduced me to the fact that Zionism was primarily a radical project of self-criticism and not a whining diatribe against the Gentiles. The ruthless mode of thought and pitiless self criticism of the founding fathers of Zionism makes one realize that this is our strength in the face of our enemies, who clearly lack the ability to engage in self-criticism. I try to follow in the footsteps of this tradition of Zionist self-criticism in my own book "The Optimistic Jew: a Positive Vision for the Jewish People in the 21st Century"
The Introduction by Rabbi Hertzberg is brilliant and worth the price of the book alone. If you want to know something about Zionism, Israel, and modern Jewish history, buy this book and read the Introduction!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book about Zionism.......2004-12-26

What is modern Zionism? Is it Jewish nationalism? Is it simply an ideology of human rights for everyone, including Jews? These are questions that I hoped would be answered (and are answered) in a book that contains articles written from 1843 to 1948 by about three dozen leading Zionists.

A doctrine of human rights for all would permit any group, including Jews, to bid on land in and near Jerusalem and (upon obtaining it) pass laws ensuring their rights of life, liberty, and property there. As well as continued immigration. I wanted to see if most Zionists saw it that way, arguing that there are many Jews (and many Jewish nationalists) and that Zion is the Jewish homeland, with Jerusalem its capital.

Moreover, I wanted to know if any of these thinkers said or implied anything like the following:

            1) We Jews don't care for Zion, but many non-Jews do, so we'll buy Zion and displace those who really love the land.

            2) We Zionists love Zion, so we'll steal it from the rightful and legal owners.

            3) We don't care about human rights. We want special treatment, so we can have privileges that are denied to non-Jews.

Not one of these authors displayed any of the above three attitudes. None of them advocated wastefulness, greed, destruction, theft, or unfairness. They did indeed argue for the rights of Jews to be equal to those of other nationalities. And they went on to discuss Jewish culture, Hebrew universities, Jewish religion, and the need for a people to have a common language and a state. These days, when the international information supply is saturated with antizionist misinformation, it's worth noting all this.

In this book, we see Theodor Herzl say that the Jews are a people, one people. A people that he thinks "will not be left in peace." And, most important, that he is not aiming to arouse sympathy on behalf of the Jews: "All that is nonsense, as futile as it is dishonorable." Those who ask that we make the dubious stipulation that Zionism is merely a claim of sympathy for what has happened to the Jews of Europe might want to note that!

We then see Ahad Ha-am say that he wants to focus on a national culture, with Zion providing merely a "secure refuge," rather than starting with a state and relying on it to produce a national culture. That's a good answer to those who ask today what Ahad Ha-am would have said about Israel's desire to continue to exist as a refuge for Jews.

Two other authors who are often quoted by "post-Zionists" are Judah Magnes and Martin Buber. I'd advise reading what they say as well. In particular, Buber splatters Mahatma Gandhi's argument that the Levant "belongs to the Arabs" by pointing out that "God does not give any one portion of the Earth away." A powerful comment for those who might otherwise think that the Jews, not the Arabs, are the ones who are regarding the Levant as theirs by Divine Right!

Vladimir Jabotinsky is often given as an example of someone who favored Jewish greed over Arab need. Guess again! Here we see him speak forthrightly about there being "no question of ousting the Arabs," And that Arabs will be a minority in Israel, but that is no hardship. And that he asks "only for the same condition as the Albanians enjoy."

If you want to learn something about Zionism, read this.

the a hundred page introduction of this work is absolutely essential for people of every ilk who want to undertand the whole zionist idealogy in one fine, easy-read scoop. the rest of this work is a presentation of every important leader of zionism in the course of 19th and 20th centuries with a short description of the writers life, endeavors, and accomplishments in the beginning of every excerpt.
this book serves on two fronts which makes it into a bona-fide classic of zionist literature: (a) someone who wants to throughly understand the conception of the movement must read this book because without it even fine, scurpulous research is incomplete. (b) someone who wants to cursorly scan the movement to form a capsule of the zionist idea in his mind for all practical intents and purposes.
i'm not a zionist, but this book gave me a clearer percpective of zionism. now i'm confident to vouch that i know precisely what zionism holds and so should you!

If you are proud of the role that Orthodox Jews have played in developing the modern Zionist movement, you will love this reader compiled more than 35 years ago (and back in print). Orthodox rabbis and Zionist leaders Yehuda Alkalai, Zvi Hirsch Kalischer, Yechiel Michel Pines, Meir Bar-Ilan, Shmuel Chaim Landau, Samuel Mohilever, Avraham Yitzhak HaCohen Kook and Isaac Reines take up a disproportionate amount of space in Hertzberg's rich work. And for good measure you will find the writings of Ben-Gurion and Jabotinsky.

A trio of nationally respected childhood-development scientists hailing from Berkeley and the University of Washington has authored The Scientist in the Crib to correct a disparity: while popular books about science speak to intelligent, perceptive adults who simply want to learn, books about babies typically just give advice, heavy on the how-to and light on the why. The authors write, "It's as if the only place you could read about evolution was in dog-breeding manuals, not in Stephen Jay Gould; as if, lacking Stephen Hawking's insights, the layman's knowledge of the cosmos was reduced to 'How to find the constellations.'"

The Scientist in the Crib changes that. Standing on the relatively recent achievements of the young field of cognitive science (pointing out that not so long ago, babies were considered only slightly animate vegetables--"carrots that could cry"), the authors succinctly and articulately sum up the state of what's now known about children's minds and how they learn. Using language that's both friendly and smart (and using equally accessible metaphors, everything from Scooby-Doo to The Third Man), The Scientist in the Crib explores how babies recognize and understand their fellow humans, interpret sensory input, absorb language, learn and devise theories, and take part in building their own brains.

Such science makes for great reading, but will likely prove even more useful to readers with a scientist in their own crib, acting as tonic to pseudoscientific how-to baby books that recommend everything "from flash cards, to Mozart tapes, to Better Baby Institutes." As the authors put it, "We want to understand children, not renovate them." --Paul Hughes

Not written to entertain but to help explain their research into the thoughts of babies and how they learn. Example: Follows their experiment on babies and foreign languages, even though these children can't talk yet!

There have been so many times since my son was born that I've wondered just what's going on in there. How we can wordlessly communicate, and how much I think he really understands about what's going on around him. This book does an excellent job of demystifying the mind of a baby and explains it in an engaging way. A perfect gift for new parents.

5 out of 5 stars Well-writen survey of current developmental psychology.......2005-07-08

This book is a concise, readable summary of recent science on baby brain development. A nice antidote to all the urban-legend-based/ new-age/ guilt-and-paranoia/ baby literature out there.

                              Book Description

The Big Thicket of East Texas, which at one time covered over two million acres, served as a barrier to civilizations throughout most of historic times. By the late nineteenth century, however, an assault on this wilderness by settlers, railroads, and timber companies began in earnest. By the 1920s, much of the wilderness had been destroyed. Spurred on by the continued destruction of the region, the Big Thicket Association (BTA) organized in 1964 to fight for its preservation. Arguing that the Big Thicket was a unique botanical region, the BTA and their supporters convinced President Gerald Ford to authorize an 84,550-acre Big Thicket National Preserve in 1974.

Saving the Big Thicket is a classic account of the region's history and a play-by-play narrative of the prolonged fight for the Big Thicket Preserve. It is a clearly written case study of the conflict between economics and preservation, presenting each side with objectivity and fairness. Originally written by Cozine in 1976, it has been updated with a new afterword by Pete A. Y. Gunter.

Originally written in 1976 (under the title "Assault on a Wilderness"), Saving The Big Thicket: From Exploration To Preservation, 1685-2003 is the environmental saga of a ten-year war between conservationists and timber companies concerning the 84,550 acres of the Texas Big Thicket National Preserve. Chronicling modern history in an eminently readible manner, Saving The Big Thicket reveals in detail the issues advocated by both sides of the often heated controversy, and offers a handful of black-and-white photographs as embellishment. Saving The Big Thicket is a welcome and scholarly addition to American conservation studies and environmental history shelves.
