Never a Car Trip without Stuckey's.......2000-12-06
A nice biography in a narrative and oral fashion of the family /man behind the once ubiquitious Stuckey's roadside candy, pecan log-roll and gas station chain. It was the place where my sister and I "blew" our souvenir money on those cross country station wagon vacations. A richly detailed, folksy biography of a cultural icon that was swallowed up and spit out by corporate conglomerates. An important book that documents roadside America. This book demonstrates that Ameican wealth is a function of opportunity and circumstance. Not everybody is in a position to become wealthy. However, the author showed through the workings of Williamson Stuckey and his stores, that when shared, the "pecan pie" can get bigger for everybody. One can surmise from reading this bio that a market economy and wealth sharing are not mutually exclusive. Mr. Stuckey shared his chain and ideals with people who might not otherwise have had the chance at wealth. The most important line in the entire book: "They (blacks) would tell me that they had to plan their trips back in the '40s and '50s when they were going across the country so they could use the rest rooms at Stuckey stores. In those pre-integration days, public restrooms were off-limits to blacks, but Stuckey's was different." A very interesting read and it was nice to learn that Stuckey's was back in family hands.

Book Description
For everyone who's ever slicked on lipstick, flirted with eye shadow, or browsed the bewildering array in any store's beauty de-partment, Color Stories offers an insider's view of all the brainstorming, bickering, and bitchery that go into those little sticks of color and pans of powder.
Former beauty editor Mary Lisa Gavenas takes us behind the scenes during the nine months that culminate in the launch of a season's all-important "color stories." We discover how one shade becomes the "must have," why makeup artists never use the same products as the rest of us, and exactly how easy -- and impossible -- it is to start a million-dollar makeup line.
Backstage at the runway shows, we're swept into the catty, chaotic work world of makeup mogul Bobbi Brown and supermodel Gisele Bündchen. At Estée Lauder headquarters, we see the achingly chic Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer spin societal trends into a lipstick lineup. We watch magazines cheat to make makeup work for layouts, find out how Cindy Crawford got to be worth every penny of her $10 million contract, and make the pilgrimage to Dallas as 35,000 of the Mary Kay faithful assemble for the fabled annual Seminar. Along the way, we also learn about marketing, media, and the manipulation of aesthetics, about the codification of physical beauty, and how this industry revolutionized the role of women in business.
Through its often funny, sometimes poignant scenes of seduction, courtship, and consummation, Color Stories reveals why women become besotted by beauty products -- and why that love affair will never end.

The Makeup Industry for Those Who Can't Get Enough.......2004-06-05
I know many people who are addicted to makeup, and I'd recommend this book to any of them. While it's not earthshattering information by any stretch of the imagination, it's still a fun, easy read. It follows the development of those seasonal color stories we so anxiously await from the initial to conception and how colors are chosen through fashion shows and advertising to the final product at the counters. You learn how the colors for the story are chosen, how magazines list that products used on models aren't really the products used (did any of us doubt this?), and many other behind the scenes tidbits.
The book is an easy, entertaining read. I finished within a couple of evenings. Behind the scenes business material is potentially dry but Gavenas manages to keep it interesting and easy to follow. It would be a great summer poolside read.
For the Neutrogena/Olay questions below...Neutrogena is still making its cosmetics line. Olay discontinued its cosmetics line but is still making skincare.
Must read for makeup junkies ;).......2004-04-02
This is a fascinating look inside the makeup industry and is a must-read for a make-up junkie like myself. It documents the process of creating the color story. How it's conceived, marketed, sold, ect. and reveals many interesting insider details about the color stories and the mis-truth's reported by popular beauty magazines. It also goes back in time to the conception of the beauty industry telling the beginnings of the Estee Lauder empire and walks you through a Mary Kay conference (found this pretty amusing). At times the detail becomes repetitive and I did a bit of skimming but overall it was an interesting little read.
Well researched a written........2004-01-26
This is a fabulous book that's well worth the read. Gives fly-on-the-wall accounts of various elements of the beauty industry. While some of the accounts seem a little exaggerated and reductive, it is a useful tool for those interested in the beauty biz.
Fun and easy to read but that's about it........2003-10-09
Of course, what more do you need in a book? Okay, first off--the disclaimers--I never read fashion magazines (although I have been known to rifle through them at the doctor's office), I don't follow fashions, I am not a cosmetics connoisseur (I only use mascara and eye pencil and I have used the same 2 brands for over 20 years). so why did I even bother to pick up this book? I figured it would give me some idea of how the "other side" lives (i.e. the proudly fashionable, well groomed, perfectly coiffed, put-together women). Well, not really. But I certainly have an idea about how the author feels about such women. No, on second thought I don't. The ambivalent tone of her writing was a bit confusing. Could she speak more contemptuosly of the bored and boring "suburban mom" (no I am not one therefore I am not speaking defensively) in search of a superficial "escape" from her dull and dreary existence? And then later she would sound vaguely sympathetic for these pitiful creatures. Oh never mind--let's just all forget our problems and crises by spritzing ourselves with some fun perfumes and putting on a new face.
Some of the history regarding the pioneers of the cosmetic industry --is interesting. But the narrative regarding the development of one of Estee Lauder's seasonal "color stories was somewhat disjointed and difficult to follow. But maybe it's just me. Maybe I need to start reading Vogue and Glamour. Maybe I need to lighten up and put on some pink lipstick.
F.Y.I.......2003-07-29
I have yet to actually read this book, but I feel moved to correct to previous reviewers who have. Actually, you are both wrong. Both Neutrogena and Oil of Olay products are still being produced though the latter is now packaged and advertised as simply "Olay".

Customer Reviews:
PHR preparation.......2007-09-12
I don't have any other PHR preparation book but I think this one is enough. It is well organized and easy to use.
Worked like a charm.......2007-07-02
I just passed the PHR a few days ago, and I owe it all to this study guide. My HR experience is somewhat limited in scope, and this book filled in all the gaps. I plan to keep this book and continue to use it as a reference guide for things that come up in the workplace.
I read and studied from this book for about 2 weeks. The great thing is that this edition of the book has a CD with a full pdf version of the entire book, as well as electronic flashcards. When it was not convenient to read the book, I could read it on the computer or my PDA. Each section has practice tests and review sections, and the author knows her stuff - all of the material and special highlights are very relevant to the exam.
If you're limited on time, I don't recommend skimming. Rather, I suggest a focus on reading the one or two sections where you need the most work.
I recently read that the pass rate for the PHR is something like 2/3 or 66%. I think that if everyone used this guide, that number would go up dramatically.
Complete, consise study guide for the PHR exam.......2007-06-29
I used this guide plus a borrowed 2005 SHRM Learning System to study for my PHR exam, which I successfully passed this morning. This book contains a LOT of information, so my suggestion would be to pace yourself and study a little at a time to avoid information overload. The employment law cases were explained thoroughly and the objectives at the beginning of each section plus the study questions at the end of each section were very helpful in understanding the specific concepts that would be covered on the exam. The bonus practice exams included on the CD were invaluable because they helped me determine which areas I needed to study more than others. I would highly recommend this guide, especially if you had to choose only one (and at less than $40 compared to hundreds for a new Learning System, it's a bargain)!
Great Resource.......2007-06-14
I used this book to study for the PHR exam. I took the exam in June 2007 and passed!
Let me give you some background. I have an MBA in Marketing and have 2.5 years of experience in recruiting and staffing. So, I do have HR experience, but not generalist experience. In other words, I have a pretty good knowledge of staffing and recruiting, but cursory knowledge of the rest of the HR world.
I bought this book because a friend of mine was using it as 1 of many resources in a prep course at a local jr. college. I only used this book, along with the practice exams from certgear.com. I had a very systematic way of studying. First, I printed out the 2007 Handbook from HRCI. Before I read a chapter on one of the Bodies of Knowledge, I read the Handbook section about learnings and competencies. I then read the chapter and took the test for that chapter that is on the included CD. I then repeated the process for the next chapter, except that I took the test for the previous chapter again. So, I read Chapter 2, took the test for Chapter 2, read Chapter 3, took the test for Chapters 2 and 3, etc. After I read the entire book (not an easy read!), I took the 2 extra PHR exams included on the CD. After that, I purchased the PHR practice tests from certgear.com and went through them.
I dedicated a month to this process. I probably put in 2 hours every day. I finished going through the certgear test a final time on Sunday night and then took the test Monday morning.
This process may work for you, but then it may not. In all, I think it has a lot to do with dedication, your comfort level with computer-based tests and your ability to absorb and apply principles. I hope this helps!
Only utilized this guide to pass the test.......2007-05-23
This guide is the only thing I used to study for the PHR. I passed the test today (I don't know my score yet though) I also have a degree in HR and a couple years of experience.
I suggest reading each chapter multiple times and spending at least 3 months studying. Study a chapter, make sure you understand it, then go over it again a week or two later. It worked well for me at least.
Much of the test involved applying the concepts. There were a lot of things on the test that I don't recall going over in the study guide but felt that a majority of the time I could make a very educated guess based on what I studied in the guide. Also, a majority of the questions seemed to have more than one good answer. Its a matter of choosing the best one.
If you already have a decent understanding of HR, this book will do the job, but study hard and read each chapter over and over a couple times.
Customer Reviews:
Un monstre de la vérité.......2005-08-26
In Fr. Rick Peddicord's The Sacred Monster of Thomism, one encounters a man both maligned and praised in his day, although perhaps more feared than lauded, Fr. Reginald Garigou-Lagrange, O.P. It should not surprise us that Garigou-Lagrange, a man who devoted his entire life to the explication of the truths of the Christian faith, would be attacked in a world that wished to rid itself of dogma and extinguish any pangs of hypocrisy arising from society's espousal of nominal Christianity. Such intransigence in the face of "progress" won him many adversaries.
The greatness of Peddicord's work rests not only in the Dominican's ability to situate his confrere historically but also resides in his analysis of Garigou's Thomism and how the senior friar's hunger for truth necessitated his often harsh reactions to those who wished that the Church would adjust her message in the modern world. This passion clearly emanated from his identity as a Dominican: Garigou embraced a life in which he vowed to preach His word for the salvation of souls. As such, he realized that letting the Kantian epistemology of Blondel or the heterodoxy of Laberthonnière go unchallenged would eventually imperil men's souls. A strict adherence to Neo-Thomism constituted Garigou's sword and shield.
Throughout the work, the reader can easily see Garigou's motivations. In one of the most interesting segments of the book, Peddicord argues convincingly that modern theologians should not ignore Garigou-Lagrange's contributions to philosophy, theology, and spirituality, all of which pose significant challenges to current, popular hermeneutics. However, as an accomplished professor of moral theology, one wishes that the author would have touched upon the fundamental reasons why Garigou's modern opponents such as Roger Haight, Monika Hellwig, and Elizabeth Johnson work to undermine the legitimacy of the dogmatic teachings of the Magisterium. Their agenda goes beyond that of lessening the transcendence of the divine or stirring up doubt in the perpetual virginity of Mary.
Still, this is an introduction, and we can only hope that the next work by Peddicord will shed more light on the tension between classical Thomism and modern theology. Regardless, The Sacred Monster is both well researched and insightful. Perhaps its greatest attribute is that it brings the thought of Garigou-Lagrange back into current theological inquiry, although one cannot be sure that the old frère dominicain will win any more allies in a world that unfortunately adheres to much of the same heterodoxy he attempted to eliminate during his life.
Book Description
Here's a stunningly illustrated guide to the ships, weapons, uniforms, and equipment described in Patrick O'Brian's sequence of 20 popular novels about the 19th century British Royal Navy officer Jack Aubrey and his surgeon colleague Stephen Maturin. Called "the best historical novels every written" by The New York Times, the books have sold more than 3 million copies and inspired a highly anticipated fox film adaptation starring Russell Crowe, set to premiere later this year. A must for O'Brian's enthusiasts, this volume boasts striking full color photographs illustrating a vast array of equipment, medals, weapons, and other objects, and is unique in that many of the featured items are actual battle relics, such as the coat Admiral Nelson wore at the Battle of Trafalgar-complete with bullet hole.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth reading and owning!!!.......2006-06-26
Anyone interested in the 19th century world of the British Royal Navy will find this book invaluable. Although Captain Jack Aubrey is fictional, the history is correct of that era. There are photos of museum relics, and much information fron primary sources. It is the most complete and affordable book I have yet seen that explains the ships of that era.One section even describes the uniforms of the Royal Navy and the Marines
of that era, a subject somewhat difficult to locate primary sources about.A great, hardback book that will keep the reader interested.
Good book on Royal Navy.......2005-11-04
This is a small coffee table book (less than a hundred pages) that is intended as an introduction to Patick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey novels. It is chock-full of diagrams, drawings, tables, pictures and so on. It covers a wealth of topics, such as types and ratings of vessels, sails and sailing, weapons. Uniforms, naval powers other than Great Britain, and privateers. It also includes a glossary at the end. There is a lot of information packed into those 90 or so pages and the reader can learn a lot. However, there is one great drawback to this book: it is written in a style that is sometimes hard to follow and assumes the reader already has a certain command of naval vocabulary. One example (page 43) will suffice:
"The lower mast passed down through holes in the deck known as partners and was stepped on the kelson. Masts were held in position by forestays which extended forward on the centerline of the vessel, while there were two sets of backstays extending aft to be secured to the sides by channel plates. The masts were stayed athwartships by shrouds."
Huh? If you can follow that, great, but in a book designed as an introduction, it's a bit much. One has to keep flipping to the glossary to figure out what's going on. However, not all the problematic words are in the glossary, kelson for example is absent (Kelson does appear in Sea of Words-see my review of that excellent book). This style diminishes the value of the book somewhat. If you find a copy, read it, but make sure you have Sea of Words at hand.
The World of Jack Aubrey: etc.......2005-08-20
A ripoff of bad, but large picts, no text to speak of.
A good book, but needs editing.......2004-12-17
This slim volume is very attractively put together. The layout is pleasing, and the many photos and historical paintings are easily the best part of the book. Past that, though, the quality drops off.
The text is reasonably well written, but doesn't always flow well. Often you'll turn the page and be surprised that the chapter is over. Or you'll read fairly detailed information on one subject, yet find gaps in others. For instance, there is a detailed chart of the actual weight of cannon shot depending on the nationality of its manufacture. This is interesting, but seems oddly out of place. In many places the book feels like a hastily organized jumble of facts. A bit more effort, and the services of a decent editor, would have improved this book.
Another improvement that could have been made by an editor is the removal of numerous typos and glitches. On one page, two illustrations have their captions transposed. In many other places obvious typos are present. If I can catch them by reading the book once, they shouldn't be there.
Perhaps the worst flaw of this book is its incompleteness. It's missing a serious discussion of how ships were sailed, information on battle tactics, and recurring locales from the novels. Worse, the book uses terms that it never explains. For instance, the caption of one illustration mentions that the bowsprit gammoning is ommitted for clarity. But gammoning is not in the glossary. (As it turns out, if you google for "bowsprit gammoning" you'll find an amazing online reference, geared towards model ship builders, with more detail than you can shake a stick at) The book is filled with such omissions. I'm pretty familiar with nautical terminology, but I'd worry for someone who got this book as their only reference.
Overall, I enjoyed the book; I received it as a gift and am happy with it. The numerous contemporary illustrations and photos of actual items are a joy, and the book did contain facts that I had not previously been aware of. However, as a reference book, it is somewhat lacking.
Good starting point.......2004-07-17
Very helpful in filling in background to the Aubrey/Maturin series only too brief (only 80 pages). This book is a good place to start acquiring info on the subject matter of the books, especially if you are a hopeless lubber like myself.

Customer Reviews:
A lot of hype, book does not deliver the "best" projects.......2001-11-19
I bought both of Van Cleave's "Best Science Fair Projects" books for my middle school child and was not impressed, in fact, I returned the first "Best Science Fair Projects" book as it was simply a waste of time and money. Readers should be advised that the majority of Van Cleave's projects are for very young children in early grammar school years, they are not for children who are planning for science fairs at the middle school or high school level, at least not on a competitive level. Many of Ms. Van Cleave's projects are demonstrations of certain basic science principles and that may be interesting for parents to try at home with their children in their spare time, but how does a child convert any of these into real projects that are supposed to ask a question, investigate the question, and proceed with an experiment to prove or disprove what the child is investigating. I cannot see where a book that contains projects such as "Can You Make a Diagram of an Insects Body" and where the materials required are cutting out the Head, Thorax and Abdomen out of construction paper to make a model insect, I cannot see where this is a project worthy to be called a "best science fair project," much less receive the praise that the other reviewers have given.
Great Book for all Ages!.......2001-11-12
I think this book is great for science project ideas. I used an idea from this book for the 2001 science fair at MacArthur Middle, and I won first prize! My little brother who goes to Maryland City Elementary used a project and he, too, won first prize! I think that this book should be a must in every library and home. Thank-you Janice Vancleave!
Great Science Fair Guideline.......2001-07-16
...This book is very thorough. It tells you how science fair projects should be presented. It had sample science fair projects. It gave outlines on abstracts, reports, etc.
My only problem with this book was that it was too complex for my daughter to understand on her own. I like my daughter to work on all her projects independently with only minimal guidance from me. There were concepts in this book that were difficult for her to understand, and I had to guide her through some of the ideas and explanations.
On a brighter side, she got an A on her project, and her teacher chose her project to display in the classroom as one of the teacher's favorite projects.
Won second place at Arapaho Elementary.......2001-06-20
My fifth grade son performed the experiment "Shadows" and won second place at the ... Elementray Science Fair ... The book tells you how to do research, write an abstract and write a report all on an elementary school level. The suggestions on how to do the display were the most valuable.
We are already planning our project for next year. I also have a daughter in the 2nd grade. There are enough projects in this book to last us until they are both our of elementary school. We only have to buy the book once and then use it year after year!
Format of book makes choosing a project easy.......2001-06-08
What I liked about this book is that your child can choose a science project by looking at the "Problem" (or the question) in the book. If the question seems interesting, they are motivated to perform the necessary experiments to find the answer. I also liked the display tips in the beginning.
