      Book Description

One premise of this book is that the study of rare lung disorders enhances our understanding of common pulmonary diseases and disease mechanisms such as fibrosis and emphysema. For example, the finding that the mutations in the alveolar type II cell specific protein, SP-C, can lead to pulmonary fibrosis is prima facie evidence that the alveolar epithelium plays a critical role in fibrogenesis. Similiarly, development of premature emphysema in patients with alpha one antitrypsin deficiency provides strong support for the theory of protease/protease inhibitior balance in the pathogenesis of alveolar destruction. A second equally important premise is that the science in rare lung s

          Description:
Different geological, technogenic and environmental samples from the Orlovka-Spokoinoe Ta-Nb-Sn-W mining site and ore processing complex in Eastern Transbaikalia (Russia), were analysed for Pb, Y, Zr, Hf and rare earth elements (REE) to assess the effect of dust and metal dispersal on the environment within the Orlovka-Spokoinoe mining site. Potential source material analysed included ore-bearing and barren granites, host rocks, tailing pond sediments, and ore concentrates. Lichens and birch leaves were used as receptor samples. The REE enrichment relative to chondrite, the extent of the Eu anomalies, the enrichments of heavy REE (HREE), and Zr/Hf and Yb/Y ratios suggest that tailings, barren granites, and metasedimentary host rocks are the main sources of dust in the studied mining environment. In addition, calculated lead enrichment (relative to host rocks) suggests that the environment is polluted with Pb. Our results clearly demonstrate the potential of REE patterns and elemental ratios as a reliable technique to trace dust and metals sources and dispersal within a confined mining area offering a new tool for environmental assessment studies.

            Description:
Hybridization plays an important role in the evolution of plant diversity. Nonetheless, it is often difficult to clearly ascertain hybrid origin by assessing morphological characters alone. Acronychia littoralis (Rutaceae) is a recently described rare tree from littoral rainforests in eastern Australia. Two forms have been tentatively distinguished on the basis of different leaf morphology however, because of the variability of the discriminatory characters across populations (and in some cases across single individuals), compiling data on the exact distribution of each form has been a difficult process. To further complicate matters, some of these distinguishing morphological characters are intermediate between those of closely related, sympatric species. As a result, simple molecular techniques were developed to assist the development of adequate conservation and management strategies for A. littoralis and to better understand its evolutionary history. Sequence data from the ITS2 region were obtained and haplotype specific primers that distinguished the two forms and the related taxa were developed. Sequence data suggest that the two forms of A. littoralis are each of hybrid origin but both involve different parental taxa. The findings provide a perspective on the evolutionary dynamics of the local rainforest flora and highlight the need for phylogenetic evaluation of rare taxa where there is taxonomic ambiguity.

I love the comedies that Leslie Nielsen has made over the years including the Airplane! series and The Naked Gun series. When I saw a copy of this book at a used bookstore, it attracted my interest. I thought it was an actual biography until I started reading through it.

Nielsen writes a fictitious acount of his career in The Naked Truth, and the result in very funny book. The story sees him narrowly missing out on the legendary roles in Hollywood or finding some other way to escape notoriety. For example, his story of being in Lawrence of Arabia as Lawrence's lover is laugh out loud funny. His reason for not actually being in the film is because the scene ended up on the editing room floor. There are numerous movie stories like this throughout the book. Nielsen also discusses his influence on other entertainers including Elvis and James Dean. The tall tales don't stop at his love life, as Nielsen discusses all of his wives and lovers.

There are plenty of puns, wise cracks, and one-liners as we have come to expect from Nielsen in this book. I completely enjoyed reading this book. Despite the fact that this book is over ten years old, it is still a treasure for fans of Nielsen.

This Englishman, who I guess spent time in Hollywood gathering information for a British television show on same, has done a good job in collecting quotes, pictures, and information about Hollywood in the 1980s. The book's drawback is that it is necessarily restricted to that decade, and earlier. It hasn't been updated like a college textbook, edition after edition, although conceivably, it could be so updated.

Mr. Kent talked to many people in the movie business, from actors to directors to producers to studio executives and agents. The book presents "naked" Hollywood in the sense that Kent describes how emotions, including especially Hollywood's version of machismo, play a large role in running the business.

At one point, Kent writes that creative people are generally anxious about the opinions of others. This struck me as a true statement, and worthy of reflection.

Creative people, unless they are satisfied with their creations in themselves, always have to look to others for recognition and approval. Especially actors and actresses, poor souls, but musicians, artists, etc., the same thing.

I wonder how many creative people there are who actually never look for approval from others, and recognition, but are happy with their own creations? Hobbyists?

Anyway, this book has many interesting photographs and I'm surprised no one has reviewed it heretofore. It will probably be a collectible someday. Anyone collect books for a hobby? Not too creative.

                  Diximus.

                              Book Description

A staple of American popular culture during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the freak show seemed to vanish after the Second World War. But as Rachel Adams reveals in Sideshow U.S.A., images of the freak show, with its combination of the grotesque, the horrific, and the amusing, stubbornly reappeared in literature and the arts. Freak shows, she contends, have survived because of their capacity for reinvention. Empty of any inherent meaning, the freak's body becomes a stage for playing out some of the twentieth century's most pressing social and political concerns, from debates about race, empire, and immigration, to anxiety about gender, and controversies over taste and public standards of decency.

Sideshow U.S.A. begins by revisiting the terror and fascination the original freak shows provided for their audiences, as well as exploring the motivations of those who sought fame and profit in the business of human exhibition. With this history in mind, Adams turns from live entertainment to more mediated forms of cultural expression: the films of Tod Browning, the photography of Diane Arbus, the criticism of Leslie Fiedler, and the fiction Carson McCullers, Toni Morrison, and Katherine Dunn. Taken up in these works of art and literature, the freak serves as a metaphor for fundamental questions about self and other, identity and difference, and provides a window onto a once vital form of popular culture.

Adams's study concludes with a revealing look at the revival of the freak show as live performance in the late 1980s and the 1990s. Celebrated by some, the freak show's recent return is less welcome to those who have traditionally been its victims. At the beginning of a new century, Adams sees it as a form of living history, a testament to the vibrancy and inventiveness of American popular culture, as well as its capacity for cruelty and injustice.

"Because of its subject matter, this interesting and complex study is provocative, as well as thought-provoking."—Virginia Quarterly Review

Recently I've read through a few books on sideshows and freaks (sort of side resarch for my next novel). Most are skimming histories of people and events. Adams has created something altogether different. Drawing on poststructuralist techniques, Barthes, theories of the leisure class, and methodologies of deconstructing narratives of the other (what "freak" would do all this!!??) she pursues the notion of freaks from appropriated nomenclature to social constructs, to name a couple avenues. You want to understand Browning's movie, then this is the essay.

Her research drew upon many sources, often comprehensive, at other times less than complete. The problems are minor, some people in photographs or freaks who wrote about their positions are not mentioned, or a name might be missing in the index, or a photo clearly dated 1885 in the picture is listed as 1903. And on a broader level I suppose she could be faulted for falling into the same trap she critiques, that of denying her her subjects voices (kudos for mentioning Gayatri Spivak but what would she say about this?)

But don't misread my finicky carping. This is an excellent book and one I'd recommend above all others I've seen for digging into our individual and collective psychologies. Read it and learn why the freaks say, "Gooble Gobble Gooble Gobble, we will make you one of us."

This is a very practical book that stands by its title "Step by step approach" to bowling. If you are a begginer or someone who learn without a coach, this might be the best guide book you can get.

WAY TOO MUCH FLUFF. Buried in all of this filler text are obfuscated details of the language. There are no real examples that can be followed. I wish I could get a refund because I really feel like I wasted my money.

Even though I haven't finished this book (not enough time in the year), it's a very well written book. Not too hard to read, but complete and covers a ton of information. Highly recommended.

                                1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-11-11

Learning to program is a hands-on activity. The best teaching texts are those that provide example programs which the student can reproduce, tinker with, and observe, to learn the concepts illustrated thereby.

Unfortunately this book does not take that pedagogical approach. The textual descriptions are high-level, supplemented by abstract and simplified diagrams, as well as tables that list in exhaustive (and exhausting) detail the various classes, their methods, properties, &c. One looks in vain however for a good program to illustrate how an actual ASP.Net website might work (I gave up looking after Part I).

The author advises that this book should not be the first to be read on the subject of ASP.Net 2.0. Accordingly, I read a more basic text on the subject, which, through well-constructed sample programs, gave me a firm grasp of the basics and whetted my appetite to learn more advanced techniques I could use to build practical websites. I hoped this book would supply those techniques, but I was disappointed.

This book might be of use to a developer who already knows the essentials of ASP.Net 2.0, and needs a desk reference for use in day-to-day programming tasks. As a learning tool, it is about as useful as trying to learn a foreign language by reading a dictionary.

1 out of 5 stars Errors and omissions.......2006-07-27

The discussion on how to use the new SqlCacheDependency class is wrong. The book claimed (in page 623) that "with SQL Server 2005 no setup work is needed and no external objects must be added to the Database.". In reality, you need to setup several permissions in the database side. In addition, you have to make sure that the compatibility level of your database is set to 90.

The source code example in page 622 will not work. The reason is that the SqlCacheDependency object was created after the command was executed. SqlCacheDependency must be created and linked to the command object BEFORE executing the command.

Further, the book made no mention of the requirements of the SQL statement of the command to be linked to the SqlCacheDependencyObject (e.g. you cannot use *, and table names must be qualified with its owner). If you do not follow these SQL rules, caching using the SqlCacheDependency will not work.

I have not finished reading the book; I don't think I will have motivation to do that. I'm not very confident that what I'll be reading is accurate because of the above errors and omissions.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the cover.......2006-07-18

This book is an excellent introduction to the facilitites available in ASP.NET 2.0. It covers simple topics such as HTML controls, WebControls, page lifecycle etc, and also goes a little deeper to discuss details of providers, personalisation & master pages to name but a few. There are also several chapters devoted to displaying data using ADO.Net which are useful. There's also a good chapter on ASP.NET security. Most if not all of this information is available on the web, however having a single book that covers these topics is well worthwhile - it's a great book to have by your side when you are writing ASP.NET sites.

                                  Book Description

                                  W. Arthur Lewis was one of the foremost intellectuals, economists, and political activists of the twentieth century. In this book, the first intellectual biography of Lewis, Robert Tignor traces Lewis's life from its beginnings on the small island of St. Lucia to Lewis's arrival at Princeton University in the early 1960s. A chronicle of Lewis's unfailing efforts to promote racial justice and decolonization, it provides a history of development economics as seen through the life of one of its most important founders.

If there were a record for the number of "firsts" achieved by one man during his lifetime, Lewis would be a contender. He was the first black professor in a British university and also at Princeton University and the first person of African descent to win a Nobel Prize in a field other than literature or peace. His writings, which included his book The Theory of Economic Growth, were among the first to describe the field of development economics.

Quickly gaining the attention of the leadership of colonized territories, he helped develop blueprints for the changing relationship between the former colonies and their former rulers. He made significant contributions to Ghana's quest for economic growth and the West Indies' desire to create a first-class institution of higher learning serving all of the Anglophone territories in the Caribbean.

This book, based on Lewis's personal papers, provides a new view of this renowned economist and his impact on economic growth in the twentieth century. It will intrigue not only students of development economics but also anyone interested in colonialism and decolonization, and justice for the poor in third-world countries.

                                      Book Description

A magisterial history of the Chinese experience in America, hailed by Howard Zinn as "a wonderful book" that "fills an enormous gap in our history."

Described by the Washington Post Book World upon its initial release as "shocking, depressing but ultimately uplifting," Chinese America is award-winning author Peter Kwong and Dusanka Miscevic's definitive portrait of one of the oldest immigrant groups and fastest-growing communities in the United States.

Drawing on years of original research and firsthand reporting across the United States and Asia, it charts 150 years of American history from the Chinese frontiersmen of the Wild West to the high-tech transnationals of today's booming Chinese American "ethnoburbs." Kwong and Miscevic apply new thinking to an immigrant story too often told as a simple tale of triumph over adversity.

This paradigm-shifting book gives us an entirely original and fresh examination of the new immigrant communities that are transforming present-day America. Chinese America offers a new picture of America's development and the complex connections between immigration, globalization, and foreign policy that exist within our history. Twenty-seven b/w photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Very revealing book.......2007-05-22

This is a very revealing book that really focuses on how Chinese Americans have interacted with mainstream American society, and it also sheds light on class struggles within the Chinese American community itself.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Worth reading.......2006-04-05

"Chinese America" is a fabulous book chronicling a misunderstood ethnic group. Today's stereotype is that all Chinese Americans are wealthy overachievers. This book debunks that myth and is very good at explaining how it came about as a result of only professionals being admitted to the U.S. at a certain point and most of those professionals being the creme of the crop from Taiwan. This contrasts with the early immigration which came largely from the Hong Kong region and consisted of rural people so discriminated against that 60 percent of Chinese in New York City in the 1920s were engaged in the hand laundry business, not by choice but because of discrimination.
This is not an America-bashing book, not at all. It only retells a complex story that today is not widely understood.

OK, Anna May Wong didn't get the part in The Good Earth which went to a European about 70 years ago. Get over it; most of us have! Typical academic whine in which everything is wrong and nothing is right with America. No credit is given for repealing racist laws, expanding tolerance and opportunity. Authors think the Weathermen and Bobby Seale had something important to say. Omits many interesting and most positive aspects of the Chinese immigrant saga in America.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary History of the Immigrant Experience.......2005-11-29

Every so often a history writer gets it right. This is just such a book...what extraordinary riches about the Chinese experience
such as the contrast between Uptown and Downtown Chinese, the building of Chinatowns throughout the United States, the contributions of Chinese doctors to the expansion of the West, the terrible experience of the Exclusion Act, the inroads into Hollywood. Consider that the idea of California as the vegetable capital of the United States was the result of innovative Chinese farmers who understood how to use water and irrigation techniques in the West. (They also used new water techniques to mine gold in the hills, creating "Chinese walls" of stones that can still be located in the Gold Country.) Never boring, this is a wonderful book for a gift. Highly recommended.

This isn't easy reading for a first quantum physics book imo, because it quickly gets to the reality interpretations of quantum physics before it discusses the physics. This can make it confusing reading, especially the first time through. If you are already knowledgeable about the quantum facts, then jump right in and explore the possible underlying realities with this book. Any discourse on the reality underlying quantum actions should be somewhat confusing - no one understands it and there are many theories.

                                      This is a pretty understandable
review of the subject without any serious math. I read it in conjunction
with a course on Quantum Physics that was heavy into the math, so this seemed
a little lightweight, but easy to read.

Herbert gives a comprehensible exposition on quantum theory, its history and development, and how it is relevant to ordinary human life. This is a must read for anyone interested in the new science.

One year ago I wrote a review and gave four stars to this book. Now I have decided to change it to 5 starts, because I have realized how much this book taught me on the basic concepts of Quantum Theory. Unfortunately, I do not see how to change the rating. Now I can detect lots of misunderstandings in other books. The explanation of concepts in terms of "filters", complementarity, etc, are brilliant. I have kept below my old review, that is still valid, but I think now that the positive part is much bigger than I first thought.

This book gives a very good description of the different interpretations of "reality" (or its denial) after the arrival of the Quantum Theory. The interpretations are grouped in eight categories, with explanations of its strengths, weaknesses and main supporters. Bell's theorem constitutes the core of the book.

The book is rigurous, well written, and you finish with a clear view of the subject. The only problems that I have found is certain bias of the author against Copenhagen's interpretation and unnecessary complexity of several examples. Apart from that, it is a very good book.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2006-03-02

This is a great book. Instead of highlighting one or two strange quantum examples, this book really tries to explain what is going on. Given that nobody really knows what is going on, this book does a very good job of explaining the prevailing theories. Other books such as "A brief history of time" and "the elegant universe" talk a little about quantum mechanics, but they left me with an incomplete view of the field. Although this book will not turn you into a quantum physicist, it will help you understand what quantum stuff is all about.

                                            Book Description

On the surface, the claim that we should preserve wildlife is unobjectionable. Few people would argue that destroying wildlife habitats and driving endangered species into extinction will have any positive result. There is also a consensus that humanity's interactions with wildlife have been based on ignorance and self-interest--even maliciousness--and that the decimation of wildlife throughout the world must be reversed not only for the sake of the animals, but for our own sake and that of future generations.

It is when the discussion turns to hard policy questions--Which species should be preserved and at what cost? Who is to bear these costs? What other values and priorities should be sacrificed to achieve these goals? What methods are most effective in preserving wildlife?--that consensus dissolves into discord. Should preservation focus on simply preserving species, or is preserving habitats the best way to ensure that species will flourish? If we "save" endangered species by keeping them in zoos, have we really preserved what is valuable about them? Are we justified in killing individuals of a healthy species if they have a detrimental effect on threatened or endangered species? Should we attempt the active management and manipulation of wildlife populations, or should we let the processes of evolution and natural selection run their course?

Any answer to these and related questions will be based on a theory about which species have value and why. But solutions must also incorporate empirical findings concerning animals and their behavior, the ecosystems that contribute to their flourishing or foundering, human behavior and the political feasibility of wildlife preservation, the economics of preserving wildlife, and the likely outcomes of various preservation strategies. These issues force wildlife preservation into the field of international economic, political, and social debate.

PRESERVING WILDLIFE examines critical issues in four key areas: wildlife preservation and individual animals; strategies for conservation and management; wildlife conservation in non-Western societies; and utilization of wildlife and related economic concerns.
