History of "Sin City".......2000-06-10
The history of Las Vegas, that wonderful city that has come to be known as Sin City, is chronicled here through the stories of the first 100 people to make an impact on the Valley. Starting with people like John C. Freemont and continuing to current day notables like Kirk Kerkorian, this book is a superb background to how this city came about. If you are a Las Vegas "nut", this is a must have book! If you want a good reading history book, this is also a good choice.
These are very well written accounts of the First 100 who helped make Las Vegas, "The Meadows", the city of shopping, gambling, and entertainment. Get this book, sit back, and enjoy!

Dale Earnhardt.......2003-05-29
The biography of Dale Earnhardt is the best book I ever read. Ever since I heard about his death I realized who he really is. This book teaches me many facts about Dale Earnhardt's life of being a stock car racer. Not only does it teach me about Dale Earnhardt, it also teaches me about his competitors and how they lost to the champion. Like all biography, this book has information about his life as a child, like where he grew up, how his childhood was and. It also teaches you about his racing career, tells you about all of the championships he won, and how his family was with him racing. Believe it or not, thanks to this book I have a new person to be a fan of, this book told me about his two sons who also race. Another thing is that this book helps me under stand the racing that he did, like what the flags were, penalties, etc. All in all this biography of Dale Earnhardt teaches me about the legendary Dale Earnhardt and then some.

King of the Road.......2007-04-02
This slim, but fascinating book, is not entirely only accessible to fans of the cinema of Wim Wenders. It certainly fills that requirement with a number of essays detailing the making of a number of his films, his inspirations and the industrial and creative difficulties befalling an artist in the 1970's and 1980's, the most fascinating of which is the trials and tribulations endured with the troubled production and distribution of "Paris, Texas." But the book is at its strongest when Wenders commits his philosophy of cinema to the page. This is a philosophy in which image is all important and in which narrative and the story-telling process is seen to hijack the purity and truthfulness of said images - an attitude he shares with his colleague Werner Herzog. What comes across strongest is Wenders love affair with cinema, often reflected in his films overriding pre-occupation with imported Hollywood forms and images. Importantly though Wenders regularly subverts and challenges such images/attitude, as in films such as "Kings of the Road" and "The American Friend." Rather than write with the pretension one would expect of an `auteur' Wenders in fact writes in a very simplistic, understandable and down to earth prose style, which takes "The Logic of Images" away from the stuffy, incomprehensible world of academic film theory. Overall there is a feeling of lamentation and nostalgia both in Wenders writing and his cinema, which permanently gives the sense that something great and good has been irretrievably lost.

Book Description
The Evans Gambit is one of White's boldest attempts to gain the initiative through an unrelenting series of hammer blows aimed to the Black position. In the past it was considered that "Lasker's Defense" would save Black from imminent disaster and inflict its own brand of counterattack. However, new research by GM Michael Rohde has opted for a move which puts the violent assault back into White's hands. See how Rohde documents Black's attempts to stop this steamroller... And then watch how he counteracts these moves with original, brave new analysis. Concurrently he takes on theoreticians GM Chandler, Harding, Moody, and others in a spirited debate to rehabilitate White's play after World Champion Garry Kasparov was twice successful in downing several top grandmasters in just the past few years. The play is sharp, brutal and requires respect and skill.

Wade Cook is a "rags to riches" story that you can profit from. He started as a cab driver, then a real estate investor, author, educator, and is now a renowned stock market cash-flow educator. Wade's dynamic and innovative, yet simple to understand and easy to implement methods will get you going and keep you going. He says, "If you'll do for two years what most people won't do, you'll be able to do for the rest of your life what most people can't do."
Customer Reviews:
Good Book but there are better.......2006-10-31
I bought the original version of this book called Wall Street Money Machine back in 1997 and was about to turn $5,000 into about $75,000 in a short period of time mostly doing options on stock splits, stock splits, earnings, dividend capturing, rolling stocks and covered calls.
My far, the options on stock splits and option techniques on quality stocks that were newsy were the most profitable. If you want some names and symbols here are a few
Summit Bank 3/2 stock split
Charles Schwab 3/2 stock split
WADE 3/1 stock split
Dell 2/1 stock split
UTI Energy 3/1 stock split
AMZN 3/1 stock split
AOL 2/1 stock split
NVLS 2/1 stock split
CSCO 2/1 stock split
ORG 2/1 stock split
KSU 3/1 stock split
KRB 2/1 stock split
WTU Sect 29 tax credit & div. capture
TRU Sect 29 tax credit & div. capture
Dell - covered call
Mcd - covered call
Krb - covered call
Dmic - covered call
Org - covered call
Those were some of my plays. That was in the 90's. Things are a little different today. The market is different. There are not that many stock splits going on, some companies that used to be great for covered call writing and rolling stocks now are far too risky with to much downside risk.
There are newer strategies available and these are available in Wade's newest books: Stock Market Money Machine and Wade Cook's Stock Picking Handbook.
To the reviewer who said to google Wade to get both sides of the story, I agree. But consider very carefully who these people are who have written this stuff about Wade that appear on google. Do we see a conflict of interest here? By the way, I also recommend going to wade cook.org for information as well. Keep in mind that wade cook.com leads to you one of Wade's competitors and no doubt, biggest basher.
No matter who you listen to regarding buying and selling stocks, remember, the stock market is inherently risky and can lop your head off if you are not careful. And even if you are careful, you can lose money.
Grossly over-rated!.......2005-11-07
Some very general information, in this and others of the series. Other reviewers are obviously recruited and biased. More useful and realistic investing/trading information and methodologies are available in many other books by experts who are not selling hype and greed.
Made a 640% 1 day return! Thanks Wade!!!!!.......2005-07-30
Folowing the advice in Wall Street Money Machine Vol I and VOL 6 I bought call options on WFMI 130 strike price and enjoyed a whopping 640% 1 day return!
Thanks Wade!
Good place to start, but you'll need more information.......2004-11-26
I'll admit, this is the book that got me enthused about investing. Wade Cook is a great teacher of stock market concepts. Before reading Wall Street Money machine, the options markets were a mystery to me. Wade cleared it up, and when I was done reading the book I couldn't wait to get started. However, that's where the honeymoon ended and reality set in.
While there are a number investment strategies in this book, it really doesn't show you how to find the stocks and options which would generate profits. I got the feeling that the book was pushing me towards signing up for one of Wades services. Because I want to be a self sufficient investor, depending on a stock picking service is that last thing I wanted. I want to know how the stocks are found to begin with, not just what to do with them after they are presented.
I began losing money immediately, but I certainly don't blame Wade Cook, I blame myself. I needed more information. Way more. My suggestion would be to read the book, and then sign up for a virtual stock trading service like what OptionsXpress.com offers, where you can experiment with your trading technique before investing any real money.
I'm a bit surprised at the cult like mentality I see in some of these reviews though. The books are great, but for me, that's as far as it goes. I'd recommend Googling "Wade Cook" and reading some of the stories of people who've lost money too so you have both sides of the coin.
Despite my opinion of Wade's business practices, I'd still recommend this book for the novice investor.
Turn me from a trader into a cash flow machine.......2004-08-31
Prior to my intro to Wade Cook, I was like a lot of people dollar cost averaging into 401 (k), IRA and regular accounts. Thanks to Clintonomics, all I saw was red since 2000 even after the spike up since 2002 thanks to Pres. Bush's tax credits.
A friend told me about Wade Cook and his revolutionary techniques. I began cash flowing the stock market instead of "buy and hold", "dollar cost averagering" etc. While I have not made the huge returns that other Wade Cook students have, I have been generating nice 10% monthly returns with covered calls and rolling stocks. With the market choppy, this is the best time to use the covered call and rolling stocks strategy. I have also used bull call spreads and bear call spreads. Wde strategies took my portfolio from the red to the black.
I also recommend Wall Street Money Machine Vol. 4 which talks about spreads and Wade's newest book and best seller Wade Cook's Stock Picking Handbook.
Great ideas t hat really work.

Only Book in the Wellesley Bookstore in the 1st week of August 2005!.......2006-09-23
Patricia Williams has a column in the Nation, Diary of a Mad Law Professor, which I found out about
through reading this great book. I was at a music conference at Wellesley last summer and happened
upon this in the bookstore. There were not many other books, but thank God they decided at least
to have something there by an alumna, because the three books I had brought were not wearing well:
1) a cynical though I suppose funny report on Howard Dean's presidential campaign, 2) a book about how
to survive in a nasty office environment and 3) I forget the third. Not great energy! But Williams' book was
very warm and funny. I was particularly admiring of how much she knew of her own family background.
A lot of family background sections in the beginnings of autobiographies can be ho-hum. This one was
a wild ride! It reads as though she knew her ancestors personally. The book is a very important discussion
of race relations and you just want everything to go her way. The college bookstore had a much bigger selection THIS year.

Book Description
Westerners invented social movements during the 18th century, but after that social movements became vehicles of popular politics across the world. By locating social movements in history, prize-winning social scientist Charles Tilly provides rich and often surprising insights into the origins of contemporary social movement practices, relations of social movements to democratization, and likely futures for social movements.
Shows how social movements are changing, including the impact of new technologies and globalization. Traces the invention and evolution of social movements with lessons for how social movements could lose their vigor. Explores fundamental questions such as 'How does democratization really occur?' Considers the relation of movements to identity, citizenship, and capital and questions whether social movements are viable in authoritarian states.
Students will appreciate Tilly's vivid examples from around the world (including a fantasy of 17th century figures John Wilkes and Samuel Adams trying to discern the effectiveness of 2003 Iraq War demonstrators).
Customer Reviews:
Dry, and spineless approach to fascinating material.......2007-03-09
I was required to read this book for a Sociology class. The point of the class was to study "movements" for social change. This book is very difficult to read, and is an extremely dry presentation of the material. The author skips around a lot going from movement to movement within a particular century. The early centuries are presented poorly, lumping an entire centuries worth of history for a country into 2 pages. And with that, trying to make connections between the first part of the century and the last part of the century.
This book also seems to make it a point to avoid talking about the United States. The US is given a page and a half in a 40pg chapter (including a half page chart) lumping everything from the Abolishonist movement, the Dry movement, the Women's movement, and Nativist movement without really discussing any of it.
The author also rips the spine out of these "movements" by so narrowly defining the term social movements that any type of voilent retaliation of "mob" mentality becomes eliminated from discussion.
If you have to buy this book for class, do so, just be prepared. If you want to study this material on you're own, use this book as a last resort.
Studying social movements requires the study of history.......2007-02-10
Charles Tilly decided to write this book for 2 reasons: he needed something meaningful to do during his approximately 5 month treatment of chemotherapy and secondly, Sidney Tarrow decided to not write a social movement's history.
Tilly thinks that a historical narrative is required to understand social movements. "History...helps because it identifies significant changes in the operation of social movements...and...because it calls attention to the shifting political conditions that made social movements possible" (pg. 3). Philosophically, Tilly is a historicist who refuses to "search for grand laws in human affairs comparable to the laws of Newtonian mechanics" this attempt, Tilly says, has "utterly failed" (pg. 9). Instead, a better "effort necessarily depends on turning away from 'laws' of social movements toward causal analogies and connections between distinctive aspects of social movements and other variables of politics" (pg. 10).
To that end, Tilly pursues 9 main arguments in this book:
(1) From their 18th century origins onward, social movements have proceeded not as solo performances, but as interactive campaigns. (2) Social movements combine 3 kinds of claims: program, identity, and standing. (3) The relative salience of program, identity, and standing claims varies significantly among social claimants within movements, and among phases of movements. (4) Democratization promotes the formation of social movements. (5) Social movements assert popular sovereignty (6) As compared with locally grounded forms of popular politics, social movements depend heavily on political entrepreneurs for their scale, durability, and effectiveness. (7) Once social movements establish themselves in 1 political setting, modeling, communication, and collaboration facilitate their adoption in other connected settings (8) The forms, personnel, and claims of social movements vary and evolve historically. (9) The social movement, as an invented institution, could disappear or mutate into some quite different form of politics (pgs. 12-14, 35-37,150-152).
Tilly pays very little attention to the history and power of ideas (this may annoy some Political Theorists). Also, according to Richard Hogan's book review in "Contemporary Sociology," proponents of the resource mobilization model and political process model of social movements will find Tilly's overall approach as a challenge and opposing view.

Book Description
A groundbreaking work of science that confirms, for the first time, the independent existence of the mind–and demonstrates the possibilities for human control over the workings of the brain.
Conventional science has long held the position that 'the mind' is merely an illusion, a side effect of electrochemical activity in the physical brain. Now in paperback, Dr Jeffrey Schwartz and Sharon Begley's groundbreaking work, The Mind and the Brain, argues exactly the opposite: that the mind has a life of its own.Dr Schwartz, a leading researcher in brain dysfunctions, and Wall Street Journal science columnist Sharon Begley demonstrate that the human mind is an independent entity that can shape and control the functioning of the physical brain. Their work has its basis in our emerging understanding of adult neuroplasticity–the brain's ability to be rewired not just in childhood, but throughout life, a trait only recently established by neuroscientists.
Through decades of work treating patients with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), Schwartz made an extraordinary finding: while following the therapy he developed, his patients were effecting significant and lasting changes in their own neural pathways. It was a scientific first: by actively focusing their attention away from negative behaviors and toward more positive ones, Schwartz's patients were using their minds to reshape their brains–and discovering a thrilling new dimension to the concept of neuroplasticity.
The Mind and the Brain follows Schwartz as he investigates this newly discovered power, which he calls self–directed neuroplasticity or, more simply, mental force. It describes his work with noted physicist Henry Stapp and connects the concept of 'mental force' with the ancient practice of mindfulness in Buddhist tradition. And it points to potential new applications that could transform the treatment of almost every variety of neurological dysfunction, from dyslexia to stroke–and could lead to new strategies to help us harness our mental powers. Yet as wondrous as these implications are, perhaps even more important is the philosophical dimension of Schwartz's work. For the existence of mental force offers convincing scientific evidence of human free will, and thus of man's inherent capacity for moral choice.

The Mind and how it affects the Brain.......2007-09-09
Excellent reading portraying how the mind can affect the physical brain. This can be achieved through conscious efforts of volitional attention resulting in mental forces that alters the material brain utilizing the concepts of quantum physics. The author uses several documented examples of successful uses of techniques utilizing these concepts especially with patients suffering from obsessive compulsive behavior.
great psychology book.......2007-08-16
this book is great in terms of psychology- full background on studies that support the authors point of view, can read as repetitive, but then again, isn't repetition key for retention?
the book isn't as bad as the negative reviews have it, nor as miraculous as the positive reviews do. it's great for the psychology of learning and neuroplasticity...
however, as for it's metaphysical content, post introductory run-down of the various viewpoints of philosophy of the mind (materialism, epiphenomenolism, etc.) in the beginning, the rest of the book is mysteriously void of the corresponding qualia debates (although i suppose the author is an M.D., not a Phil. Ph.D.). but if he would like to claim that mind is something other than matter, it would be nice to touch on this (especially concerning causal efficacy of non-material mind). i'll agree with other reader/reviewers that invoking quantum mechanics has become somewhat fashionable, but those parts were interesting reading, even if it didn't seem clear how he meant to invoke immaterial mind into the equation.
at least it makes you think about all these issues- to the negative reviews, no one book should be your single source anyway- schwartz has a captivating theory, which (just like anyone else's) should be taken with a grain of salt, open to interpretation and evolution...
Where Neuroscience Came From.......2007-06-26
On the plus side, I loved reading about the experiments and gaining an understanding about what the results mean and how that works with neuroplasticity. I believe that the brain can be changed with "exercise" and that's what made me pick-up this book.
But I personally was hoodwinked by the whole "the mind is not of this world" thing. It seemed to me, an admitted novice, but not a complete dolt, that Dr. Schwartz should have been up-front with counter arguments. I think it was nearly 100 pages into the book before he mentioned that it could be that one part of the brain was changing another. We do have a "reptile brain" with a more modern brain added later...I could see where one part could teach the other part something! I wouldn't expect him to argue forcefully for the other camp, but I recognized (with some other readings) that the other position was distorted to improve his (rather weak) argument.
Something the other reviews didn't mention was that this was a bit of a biography for Schwartz. He tells us when, where, who, what they talked about. It's also a bit of a history lesson; sometimes I'd be excited about a topic, only to find out the experiment was in the 1800's (and there's no fMRI results).
I'm in the camp with some of the other reviewers that got tired of the repetition. If the repetition was eliminated, the folksy "I was with 'Mr. Cool' on this day" was eliminated, and especially the drumbeat of how the mind exists outside of reality, you'd have a much more readable and interesting book.
The physical brain can be "all there is" and still operate upon itself! Nothing in this book convinced me otherwise.
What I've Known All Along.......2007-05-31
As an educator with a PhD in Human Development, I have always known on an intuitive, if not learned level, that the human brain has the potential to be ever-changing and ever-developing, even into old age or following trauma, such as a stroke. Perhaps more importantly, Schwartz has reinforced my belief that the free will of individual human beings has the power to shape thoughts, which in turn create neuro-pathways, allowing us (compelling us?)to literally 'grow our brains' as we (can) choose to learn new skills, behaviors, and attitudes; our free will can further be utilized to replace maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors with those that can give us a better quality of life, such as with OCD, or depression. I particularly appreciated Schwartz's discussion of the morality of free will. Combined with the brain's neuro-plastic nature, free will creates the power to shape the choices we make via the thought patterns that we can choose over others. This, he proposes, is what gives humans their spirituality, separate from animals, and I am certain that he is correct; free will, along with will-power, to think moral thoughts and choose moral actions, are not emphasized enough in our mechanistic culture of passive recipients who have been taught and have bought the notion that, 'I am who I am, I can't change, I have to be true to myself' and so on..all well and good if one has a high, altruistic moral code, not so good if one does not. Finally, as an educator, I found Schwartz's insight into learning new behavior(s), sometimes requiring the unlearning of old behavior pattern(s), and then requring discrete steps and repetitive action, very applicable to today's classroom. The education of young children, especially with learning difficulties, who need this type of learnimg/training the most, has instead given way to the easy route, 'do fewer problems', 'if it's too hard, you don't have to do it'; 'don't worry, we'll pass you' are phrases reflective of how education has been watered down rather than changed to meet the needs of students who need more training, more practice, more skill development, if they are to create the neuro-pathway needed for academic skills to become second-nature.
The Mind and the Brain.......2007-04-10
Excellent book for those needing insight into Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Material presented in a clear fashion with substantial evidence.

Book Description
Gorilla recounts in remarkable color photographs the strange and powerful story of the last few hundred members of a nearly extinct species: the famed mountain gorillas of the Virunga volcanoes. These inhabitants of the forested mountain range bordering Rwanda, Uganda, and Zaire, were brought to the attention of the world through last-ditch efforts to preserve their dwindling survival. Told here with rare force and eloquence is the story of a people, the land, the animals, and the environment that struggle to maintain a delicate balance in one remote corner of the earth.
The photographs by Alabama-born adventure photojournalist Michael Nichols were taken during three trips to Africa since 1981. A contract photographer for National Geographic magazine and a former member of Magnum Photos, Nichols is celebrated for stunning color photography, seen in the pages of Geo, Life, Esquire, Travel & Leisure, Stern, Outside, Paris-Match, and the other international magazines. His extraordinary images, both eerie and tender, capture perfectly the fascination of the mountain gorilla.
The authoritative essay by George B. Schaller, Director for Science of Wildlife Conservation International at the New York Zoological Society and author of nine books, including National Book Award winner The Serngeti Lion, summarizes the last two decades in the existence of the gorilla and expands on his own pioneering studies in the late 1960s. Schaller explains how the animals fend off extinction in a beautiful, primitive land, and offers a potent warning of the effects of tampering with a fragile ecosystem.
Since the original publication of this book, the survival of the mountain gorilla-one of the environmental success stories of the world-has been once again thrown into a precarious position due to the unstable political climate in Rwanda. Now more than ever it is important to remember the vital ecological role of these rare animals.
