Book Description
A fascinating and inspirational biography of Alanson D. Brown, who through years of struggle and perseverance (and a few lucky breaks) made St. Louis the center for shoe manufacturing in the U.S. in the previous century. Not only does this book have value as an inspirational business guideline, but it also shines as local Saint Louis history, and encompasses an interesting portion of Western Americana as well.

Great Book About Movies About Movies.......2000-09-27
This is one of the best books to tackle the subject of Hollywood. Ever since the beginning of motion pictures, Hollywood has made movies critisizing, and complimenting itself. The movies range from musicals, to comedies, to deep drama. This expertly written book covers movies such as Singin' In the Rain (a musical comedy about two stars making the transition from silent films to talkies), What Price Hollywood? (The first talking picture to tackle the subject of Hollywood- later remade as A Star is Born), Sullivan's Travels (a hilarious comedy about a comedy director who wants to make dramas), and Sunset Boulevard ( a deep Billy Wilder drama about a crazed silent star who hires a screenwriter to write her a comeback script). It is a must have for any fan of old Hollywood!
Book Description
Although the Internet takes us everywhere in cyberspace, it usually requires us to be seated behind a desk. In contrast, the cellphone lets us walk through the world, fully connected. Cellphone explores the history of mobility in media--from books to cameras to transistor radios to laptops--and examines the unique impact of a device that sits in a pocket or palm, and lets us converse by voice or text. The restricting and liberating edge of accessibility transforms restaurants, public transport, automobiles, romance, literacy, parent-child relationships, war, and indeed all walks of life, trivial and profound. Like an organic cell that moves, evolves, combines with other cells, and generates, the cellphone has become a complex sparkplug of human life.

Good book but not what I had in mind........2007-06-12
Paul Levinson is a gifted writer in my opinion. He has a lively style and conveys his ideas very effectively. When I bought this book, I thought (for some reason) that I was buying a book that recounted the development and technical characteristics of this powerful new media (the cellphone). It turned out that the book is devoted to the possibilities and potential of the cellphone along with some of the situations you are likely to encounter while using it. It compares the cellphone with other means of communication (mainly the computer with Internet access and the regular telephone) plus it presents some historical background on all these means of communication that preceded the cellphone. In the end, I am still glad that I bought and read this book.
Clear, concise examination of cellphones in society........2006-09-26
A clear and approachable historical study of the impact of cellphones on society and culture, Levinson's text is an strong contribution to an emerging field of research. Although it is in some respects, tainted by the author's personal status, this also allows him to use his real world examples to paint a clear picture of what it is like to live in a world where you can always make contact with others, but can also always be contacted.
This is not to suggest that the text is in any way deficient in theory or research, which is woven carefully throughout the text, accompanied by an annotated and accessible Bibliography. At times it would have been helpful for referencing to be in-text, although his does digress where appropriate and helpful in-text. Levinson's strongest appeal is that we need to consider cultural relations around cellphone use (such as accepting the desire to ignore incoming calls) and not just legislate around them. This is an important point to consider, in societies where camera and video phones can be carried and used almost anywhere, provoking not just a degree of freedom, but public and private fears around invasions of privacy.
Thoroughly readable and filled with some wonderful imagry and creative language, Levinson's "Cellphone" is an important contribution in a time when technology is increasingly mobilising throughout our lives.
Clueless history of technology irrelevant to real world of cellphone.......2006-02-09
This book disappoints severely. Usually Levinson is well on target, but in this book he clearly misses the mark. His examples are massively out of date - in Israel the cellphone penetration was not 75% in 2004, back in 2003 it was 105%, etc etc etc. Levinson has taken a considerable knowledge of change in technology and then applied sloppy research and bad examples to the world of cellphones. Here in Singapore we are also in the over 100% penetration rates for cellphones, and several excellent books about the real impact of cellphones - such as Rheingold's Smart Mobs, Ahonen's m-Profits and Kopomaa's City in the Pocket will give you much more than this. What is most annoying, is that the book is mostly so badly off its topic.
I do not recommend this to anyone, not even fans of Levinson. Reading this book will guide you wrong. Luckily there are ample better books about the real world of cellphones. Don't buy it.
Levinson is a McLuhan for the 21st Century.......2006-01-27
A comprehensive look at the jangling god that rules our lives. Levinson knows exactly what he's talking about, and his insights ring true (if you'll forgive the pun). There's a reason CNN, the Wall Steet Journal, and the New York Times keep turning to this guy for commentary. Anybody who's reading Stephen King's new novel CELL will find this a fascinating companion volume. About the only complaint I have is that this book deserved a much better cover.
Boring, myopic and uninformed.......2005-06-17
Now for a book that's 180 pages long, it's BORING. This guy can ramble. And despite this he says very little in each page. It could all have been more succinct in 100 pages. He clearly knows a little about a lot about the phone but this book manages to avoid being coherent. Next he seems to write to serve the purpose of the title ensuring to find the cons in any other form of media he can bring up even if he contradicts his point by basically just describing exceptions to what his point was, while trying desperately to find pros in cellphones each and every time. These cons include computers, the internet, and blogging. These are all topics about which the viewpoint is misinformed and skewed and lacking. The book falls flat with padding from the start and apart from some info, it's generally not worth it.

Excel 2003 Step by Step Review.......2007-10-03
This book was a solid introduction to Excel 2003. I have used Excel since about 2000 and found the first parts of the text to be information I already knew. Even so, I went through every single exercise and picked up a few shortcuts - mainly right click tips along the way. The introduction to PivotTables was helpful. Also, importing and exporting data is a good introduction. Toward the end of the text, as expected, the exercises get a little more challenging. The breadth of the text is good. I'd recommend for beginners. The back of the book says for Beginning to Intermediate users, which is accurate. There are very few typos in the text. Opted to buy Excel 2003 Inside Out for more advanced Excel knowledge.
Great book to update your knowledge of Excel.......2007-09-22
I think this is one of the best books you can buy to update or improve your knowledge of Excel. I feel confident that even a novice could learn how to use Excel.
Best Excel Training Book.......2007-06-20
This book was required by the University of Tennessee's MBA Program to get those who were not experienced with Excel to an experienced user level. I considered myself an intermediate user before the program; however, the book was an excellent supplement to the program. Frye does a great job of illustrating click-for-click moves along with graphics--in addition, the CD included really helps bring the learning home.
Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Step by Step.......2007-06-12
This book is good if you are going for your specialist certification. However if you are going for Expert level I did not find it helpful. There are a lot of items not covered in this book that you need to know for the expert level certification
Microsoft Excel 2003 Step by Step.......2007-06-12
I ordered several of these 'Step by Step' 03 books and your's came within the alotted time frame, but much later than the others; however, you still provided a very good service.

The Real Odessa: How Peron Brought the Nazi War Criminals to Argentina
ASIN: 0471193771 |
Book Description
On May 24, 1960, David Ben-Gurion, prime minister and founder of Israel, stood before the Knesset and made a startling announcement: "I have to inform the Knesset that, some time ago, Israeli security forces found one of the greatest Nazi criminals, Adolf Eichmann, who, together with other Nazi leaders, is responsible for what they termed the Endlösung [Final Solution] of the Jewish question, in other words, the extermination of six million European Jews. Adolf Eichmann is already in this country under arrest and will shortly be brought to trial."
Operation Eichmann, as the pursuit, capture, and trial of the notorious Nazi official was known, stunned the world. Its success was due largely to the unceasing efforts of one man, Zvi Aharoni, an experienced Mossad operative who was a skilled investigator and interrogator. He tracked Eichmann to Argentina, secured photographs that established his identity, and was a key player in the plot to kidnap the exiled war criminal and bring him to trial. Above all, as the sole person to interrogate "the architect of the Final Solution" after his capture, and the man who convinced Eichmann to admit his identity and face trial in Israel, Zvi Aharoni is the only one who knows firsthand what Eichmann actually saidâa controversial subject often misrepresented in previous accounts.
Now, for the first time in Aharoni's own words, comes the extraordinary true story behind one of history's most famous manhunts. Daring, dramatic, filled with episodes of breathtaking suspense and intrigue, Operation Eichmann is also a powerful chronicle of conscience and of the never-ending search for justice.
All the intricate planning and preparation, the relentless pursuit of evidence, the constant need to justify time and expense are related with exacting detail. As events unfold, various political, personal, and philosophical issues come into play, focusing not only on a top secret mission, but on the priorities of individualsâas well as nationsâduring the Cold War era. The startling complicity of those who gave refuge to and provided safe passage for fleeing Nazi leaders reveals an expansive network of global proportions, while the seeming indifference of others is equally chilling. Adding to the tension is the emotional toll imposed on the participants, for whom the operation became a constant exploration of the theme of justice vs. revenge.
A probing, deeply personal account of a real-life undertaking to rival the most breathless cloak-and-dagger fiction, Operation Eichmann is a powerful, compelling reading experience.
"Operation Eichmann has been covered by a wide range of 'literature.' However, in all the books written so far there have been certain constraints which have meant that the writers were not able to present a full and correct picture of what actually happened. There is no doubt that this book represents an objective and authentic addition to the tale of heroism that led to the capture of Eichmann and his standing trial in Israel. Without Zvi Aharoni and his friends, we would never have achieved what we did."
Customer Reviews:
Informative but dull.......2005-08-15
If you want an overview of the capture of Eichmann this book will give it to you, but don't expect a gripping story. This is unglamorous espionage. Israel receives very specific information of Eichmann living in Argentina but ignores it twice. When they finally decide to pursue him it turns out that Eichmann had given up running. He and his family were living thinly concealed lives in squalor.
The author's style is slow and plodding as if he was trying to stretch the story to fill the 180 pages. For example, we learn a bit too much about the difficulties of renting cars in Buenos Aires in 1960. But the book is worth the read if you don't know the story.
"EICHMANN IN MY HANDS" is the TRUE, PERSONAL ACCOUNT by Peter Malkin........2005-08-11
The claims in this book and by the literary critics above are such complete, watered-down, political CRAP intended to sell another book on the subject. It is all third-hand, and poor at that. Read the TRUE and ACCURATE account by the Israeli Spy, recently declassified WHO ACTUALLY CAUGHT ADOLF EICHMANN. His famous book is called "EICHMANN IN MY HANDS". Before this book, he had to write under an alias, Peter Z Mann. His action novels reflect his life and are must-reads: "ULTIMATUM PU 94" and "CARLOS MUST DIE". (Also recommend the underground book written in 1961 immediately after Eichmann's capture "THE PLOT TO SAVE EICHMANN".
Operation Eichmann : The Truth about the Pursuit, Capture and Trial.......2005-08-06
Very interesting book. A story I was about which I was always curious.
An Infamous Individual Is Brought To Justice.......2004-09-07
This account of the life of Nazi Adolf Eichmann from his role in persecuting the Jews under Adolf Hitler's infamous Third Reich until his capture in May of 1960 and his ultimate death by hanging is told by Zvi Aharoni, the man who was a key player in the plot to kidnap Eichmann and bring him to trial. Vivid details that had to be attended to both prior to and after the capture of the Nazi criminal are provided to appreciate the difficulty in carrying out this complicated undertaking. Eichmann had a number of sons, the last of which, Richardo, was a generation younger than his brothers who really has no recollection of his father. He states he feels nothing towards his father, and can't find words to describe his terrible deeds during the war. During a visit to the site of the Wannsee-Konferenz which showed a photo of Adolf, Ricardo explained the role of his children's grandfather to them. The two children sadly said they "could not love a grandpa like him." I guess we all serve as an example to others, even if it is in a negative way. Anyone interested in Hitler's shady characters will enjoy seeing justice served in this book.
Interesting insider account of controversial act.......2001-07-31
This is a first-hand account of the search for, capture and trial of one of the most prominent Nazi war criminals. Adolf Eichmann played a key role in transporting millions of Jews to the extermination camps. After he vanished at the end of the war, Zvi Aharoni, an experienced Mossad operative, led the search for him.
Eichmann, along with at least 300 other leading Nazis escaped from Austria to Italy and then to Argentina via the ýconvent routeý, assisted by the Roman Catholic Church and the Red Cross. However, after Aharoni located and identified Eichmann, the Israeli Government made no attempt to get him extradited from Argentina. It ordered Aharoni to kidnap Eichmann and smuggle him to Israel. The kidnapping, in May 1960, broke Argentinaýs laws, as Israelýs Prime Minister David Ben Gurion later admitted. The United Nations General Assembly passed a Resolution condemning the abduction as a violation of Argentinaýs sovereignty.
The Israeli Government put Eichmann on trial in 1961. He famously claimed that he was only obeying orders, but was found guilty of instigating the killing of millions of Jews. He was executed on 1 June 1962.
The whole enterprise showed the Israeli Governmentýs cavalier attitude to other countriesý sovereignty. Its technical success was used to warrant later repeated attacks on other nationsý sovereignty. These aggressions damaged the countries attacked: they also degraded Israel itself. Aharoni laments that after he retired ýthe rules changed and the ideals of his past no longer applied; with the occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, Israel had become a different country.ý (A key indicator of this change was that, appallingly, confessions obtained by force became admissible evidence in court.) But he cannot see that his careerýs most triumphant moment - the forcible abduction of Eichmann - contributed to this moral degradation.
Book Description
"It would be hard to imagine a better, or more readable, analysis of United States policy over the last fifty years than Clyde Prestowitz's Rogue Nation." --Brian Urquhart, The New York Review of Books
America's democratic ideals have long been the hope of the world, but our allies increasingly see us as abandoning those ideals. It's not hard to understand why. In the months before 9/11, the United States walked away from a number of international treaties including the Kyoto Accord. After the attack, the United States turned a cold shoulder to NATO's offers to assist with the invasion of Afghanistan, unilaterally terminated the ABM treaty, and actively opposed the creation of an International Criminal Court. Then came the war on Iraq, begun despite the clear refusal of the United Nations Security Council to authorize an invasion.
Obsessed with our own immediate military and economic security, we now deem institutions like NATO and the UN irrelevant. We have abandoned containment for a policy of preventive attacks on potential threats. More and more, we act alone, with little regard for the needs and goals of other nations.
Rogue Nation is not an argument against American dominance or the exercise of American power. It's an argument against stupidity, arrogance, and ignorance in the exercise of power. Prestowitz explores the historical roots of the unilateral impulse and shows how it now influences every important area of American foreign policy. Even now, when the need for multilateral action has never been greater, we continue to act contrary to international law, custom, and our own best interests.
Customer Reviews:
Why do they hate us?.......2007-04-04
essential reading for those who seek an answer for the above question.
quite surprising.......2007-01-11
Coming from the conservative corner of the American Politics it was quite a surprise! The author starts in a way where I was not sure where he wants to take me, but from about the middle on things are being put together and start to make sence! Apparently not too many people have read it yet, otherwise I am quite sure the American political map would look different!
REAL, not neo, conservatism.......2006-06-09
I used to think I was a conservative, and then conservatism was taken over by Christian bigots, spoilt brats, and blood-thirsty lunatics. It was frankly embarrassing. I love free markets, small government and freedom, but happened to them? Buried under the only issues that still matter to conservatives: abortion and homosexuality. As long as the candidates say the right things on those issues, they evidently can do anything they want domestically and internationally, whether it's destroying civil liberties, alienating traditional allies, or creating new enemies.
I guess that libertarianism has gone the way of disco. The only options for American voters are whether you want the government to screw up your economy (Dems and Greens) or your private life (Repubs). On international politicy, American voters have no options: both parties seem to agree that you need neither friends nor integrity if you have the biggest, baddest guns.
Here is a book I was looking for. A conservative saying, hey, look what we're becoming. "Our country--MAY SHE ALWAYS BE RIGHT--but our country right or wrong,"--what happened to that middle phrase? Internationally, we ought to be ashamed of ourselves. We ought to be striving to be better.
At least this book explained the rationale behind some of the more bewildering decisions of recent years. Explained it fairly sympathetically to the American side; where I would say that Bush and Cheney are corrupt, owned respectively by the energy and defense industries, Prestowitz at least thinks they had some reasonable principles behind their decisions.
So, it is a breath of fresh air, a conservative perspective expressed against neo-con nonsense. Now if only we can mobilize voters to care about this stuff (and the other, real issues) more than whether evolution will be taught in schools.
Balanced, extensive, well organized........2006-02-27
Describes how America's image abroad has lost its luster. Notable for range of issues covered, balance, and side by side portrayal of discrepancies between domestic and foreign perceptions. Book is well-organized and does a good job of identifying common themes in American policy. Discusses how George W. Bush's foreign policy is different from and, interestingly, how it is consistent with what came before.
Prestowitz' essentially liberal conclusions (favoring international cooperation and rule of law) are led credibility by his extensive connections abroad and conservative background. (Prestowitz was counselor to the Secretary of Commerce in the Reagan Administration. There, he led many U.S. trade and investment negotiations with Japan, China, Latin America, and Europe.) Prestowitz himself sees these issues as existing outside the big vs. small government debate of liberalism vs. conservatism. Thus he sees his conclusions as neither liberal nor conservative but simply opposed to neo-conservative radical imperialism.
Although I think Rogue Nation is excellent I'm giving only four stars because it isn't arguing anything that hasn't been argued before.
World's Goliath to Be Distrusted, Disliked, and Feared?.......2006-02-07
Clyde Prestowitz is relentless in identifying and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the U.S. as the rest of the world perceives them. Prestowitz shows with much conviction that some Americans are not conscious enough of the gap that exists between how they see themselves and how they are perceived abroad. Nonetheless, most Americans already know that the U.S. is ultimately held to higher standards than the other countries because of its ambition to lead and inspire the world. The U.S. has been the key driver in exporting free trade, democracy, and peace, the ideas that have conquered the world following the collapse of the British Empire. The world is definitely better off thanks to what the U.S. has achieved since the 1940s. Being mighty, however, does not necessarily mean being right. Furthermore, being right is sometimes perceived as less important than the way it is conveyed. However, there is hope for starting to bridge this reality gap. Michael Mandelbaum convincingly demonstrates in The Case for Goliath that no other country than the U.S. has the ability and willingness to offer the world the governance it badly needs. The U.S. needs to better advertise and sell the global services that it provides to the community of sovereign states. These global services are most often underappreciated and taken for granted due to a lack of visibility.

A big enjoyment.......2007-10-02
This is a superb collection of puzzles of all kinds. Anyone experienced or not in the puzzle field should own this book.
Martin Gardner is a guarantee for this book's efficiency, and highly educational and entertaining content. 5/5
The home trainer for the brain.......2007-03-06
Great collection of thought puzzles, some well known, some highly original.
What I like most is that every problem, from the simplest up to the really difficult, has a twist to it: You may think you immediately see the answer, but there is always something you didn't think of. For example Problem 1.1 (to be seen in the Excerpt when you click on the image of the book): How many dates in a year can be confusing if you don't know whether they are in European notation (28/2/2007) or US (2/28/2007)? Your first thought is "That's easy, just 12x12", until you think a second time.
If you want to train your brain, solve a few of Martin Gardner's puzzles every day. Or just do it to have fun.
I predict this book will be a Mathematical Recreations classic. .......2006-03-14
Martin Gardner is the name that always comes to mind when one thinks of Mathematical Recreations. Anyone who ever read Scientific American magazine will remember his column in every issue. He wrote the column for 25 years;and made puzzle lovers of millions of readers. His fans ran the gamut from those with a very elementary background in mathematics to those with a high degree of knowledge. What he did was to make mathematics something to enjoy and use as a recreational pursuit. Over the years, he wrote about 70 books, many that have been popular for a long time.
In this book, he has chosen 340 puzzles from his columns of over 25 years. He has selected simple problems as well as medium and difficult. Each problem is supplied with an answer or solution . Often, answers in puzzle books are sketchy;but here we not only get an answer but also a good idea and explanation on arriving at the solution.
The most interesting thing about this book is that it is geared to all levels of puzzle solvers (OMNIHEURISTS). I am sure that someone who has worked only a few puzzles, and who hasn't,will find many quite easy and in a short time will progress to those with more challenge; due particularly to the answer explanations. At the same time ,those with a lot of experience will find plenty to amuse themselves.
Along with a pick of some of the best of the columns over the years,Gardner has included 12 of the best brainteasers to have come his way since he stopped writing the column in 1986.
Also, we are given a list of all the other books that Martin Gardner wrote over the years. Along with that, there is a list of selected titles for those interested in more in the world of Recreational Mathematics.
If you like Mathematical Recreations or puzzles of any kind ;take a look at this book and you'll surely want to own it.
Gardner's collection of puzzles over the years (from Scientific American).......2006-01-03
What a great collection of puzzles. Anyone who likes puzzles SHOULD own this.
I initially bought this for myself. But my brother-in-law loved it so much (when it arrived) that I gave it to him as a present. Just ordered it for myself again!
THE gift.......2005-12-13
The Colossal Book of Short Puzzles and Problems is going to be THE gift to send to your puzzle-loving friends and family. Gardener is a master and a national treasure. Every math teacher should own this book as a resource, and every puzzle-lover should have it for hours of fun.

Book Description
The conservation movement is moving rapidly away from traditional "protectionist" approaches toward nature to more integrated views of wildlife and landscape conservation. This volume reviews modern conservation approaches as they relate to mammals. A team of researchers and conservationists provide focused perspectives on preservation, such as the role of mammals within the conservation movement, how priorities should be set, allocation of funds, and promising techniques and approaches for future mammal protection. In addition, issues of broader conservation relevance are highlighted, including the integration of species and biodiversity approaches, the role of "flagship species," and the need for holistic conservation models in the wider context of society and government.
