Book Description
C.B. Fry was Captain of England at cricket, played soccer for England, and became the joint-holder of the world long-jump record. But he was much more than a sportsman. He won a major scholarship to Oxford, where his friends numbered Max Beerbohm, Hilaire Belloc, and F.E. Smith. He wrote several books, including an autobiography and a novel, and he was one of the most successful journalists of his day. He was a friend of many prominent Labour and Liberal politicians, but flirted with Fascism, meeting Hitler in 1934. He tried out for Hollywood, represented India at the League of Nations, and stood for Parliament three times.

All - Round Entertainment.......2000-02-07
Charles Burgess Fry was undoubtedly one of the greatest sportsmen that ever lived. Not only that, he was a giant in other walks of life also. Iain Wilton has produced a thoroughly researched and eminently readable account of the life of the man who represented his country at football, athletics and cricket as well as being offered the throne of Albania. Surely we will never again see anyone capable of holding a World Record (at the long jump) and also being good enough to score 94 first class centuries. He also edited his own magazine and campaigned for Parliament as a Liberal Party candidate. This biography adds to the scant written material on Fry - surprisingly not covered by more than just one previous biographer. He had himself also written an autobiography which tended to recollect in detail Fry's greatest achievements yet omit his many failings. Wilton is not shy to record Fry's faults yet at no time does he detract from the overall impression of a man much larger than life who was adored by the sporting public. If this book does have a weak spot, it is the scanty coverage of his days before he went up to Oxford. His schooldays and family life as a child are rather superficially skated over, yet the remainder of the volume is almost exhaustive in its detail without ever becoming dull.

Skip the small stuff and go for the kill........2001-05-21
I must have spent agonizing hours testing this brick and that, every shadow and every possible doubling back pattern. No stone unturned (usually to turn on me). I died a thousand deaths. This book could have saved the agony of defeat and turned it into the thrill of victory. Unlike the brave man I may not have died at all. More than Strategies & Secrets there are patterns and special keys.
Thank you Jonathan Mendoza for helping us Survive!

Customer Reviews:
Thin book, but I keep finding new stuff every time..........2006-01-30
This is an old favourite of mine. I have two copies, because after I lost one to a "borrower" I grabbed a spare to make sure I never have to do without again.
Sometimes, the shortest books have the deepest impact - consider Shakespeare's line "parting is such sweet sorrow" and think how long it would take you to paraphrase it. This isn't a thick volume, which means I pick it up a lot more, but even so every time I open it I find a new treasure. Usually just when I need it. I consider myself an "advanced thinker" after over 20 years on the Self-Growth path but I wouldn't be without it.
To those who chose to disparage the 'simple' truths within, I would simply ask how far along your own paths you are, that you are still looking for complicated answers. The 'secret' is hidden in plain sight. You've probably read it a million times. The trick, however, is in putting the books down after you've read them, and taking action - something this book always inspires me to do. That's the true value of it. Quick, easy, inspirational and a to-the-point reminder that your results are out there waiting for you to create them, along with details of the things that you need to do, and what could be holding you back if you're still feeling stuck somewhere along the way!

Life is like a 10-Speed bike........2001-11-18
"Life is like a 10-Speed bike. Most of us have gears we never use"
For example, we all know childhood friends who were blessed with great athletic abilities... but who have chosen as adults to let their God-given talents go unused while they willingly turn themselves into overweight couch potatoes.
We all know childhood friends who were so full of adventure and passion in their youth... but who have chosen to become increasingly sullen and bitter as they grow older.
We all know "Whiz Kids" from High School and College who were always heading up class projects and fund-raisers... but who as adults have traded in their entrepreneurial spirits for a "secure" job they hate.
Do you think those people are using all 10 of their gears? Or do you think they're stuck in low gear because it's easier to turn the pedals? Sure, it may be easier to turn the pedals in low gear, but its also easier to spin your wheels and get stuck in a rut!
The purpose of this book is to offer the information that will allow us to have all the things in life that we deserve. But understanding the principles discussed in You Inc. ... and then by incorporating them into our lives, I'm convinced we will improve the quality of our lives beyond our wildest dreams.
Can you look in the mirror and honestly say you're living up to your fullest potential?
Or are you holding back on your potential... and holding out on the quality of your life by not being all you can be?
Sadly, too many of us have "forgotten who we are" ... and too many of us are "more than what we have become".
I challenge you to look inside yourself and discover, once and for all, what you can become.
For I truly believe that once you discover the full value of YOU, INC. you will become not only what you were meant to become... you will also become more than you ever dreamed!
Just Starters.......2001-03-27
It is a good book however not exceptional. Not recommended for advanced thinkers or advanced readers. Good piece to start off and beginners. Gives an insight into the 10 valuable principles.
Is it just me?.......2000-07-25
Is it just me, or does anybody else read this guy and get sick of the "motivational seminar" approach? If this guy suggests motivational tapes and seminars one more time, Im going to throw up. The ideas that he shares are valuable, yet simplistic. This is a great entry level book. However, if you are an advanced thinker, worker and individual, you will find it echoing extremely familiar values with a heavy taint of motivational speaking. I just cant take anymore of this "stop the madness" approach. It's overdone and over commercialized. Unfortunately, the message often can get lost in the "energetic" hype.
Not a bad read. Just not an exceptional piece.
Not to mention that the cheesy, "professional" photo on the back just re-confirms my suspicion that Hedges is just another "motivational speaker" trying to convince you to buy his tapes and his other books.
---Jim
Great basic self-help........1999-10-13
This book helped me realize my potential without all the hype of the rah-rah stuff. It is pretty basic and allowed me to find my self-image that I already had inside to be the person I believe God wanted every single person to be. It is very easy to read and one of the few books that can be passed down to the younger generation, and hold their attention, for them to realize their potential too.

Book Description
God's Clockmaker is a biography of England's greatest medieval scientist, a man who solved major practical and theoretical problems to build an extraordinary and pioneering astronomical and astrological clock. Richard of Wallingford (1292-1336), the son of a blacksmith, was a brilliant mathematician with a genius for the practical solution of technical problems. Trained at Oxford, he became a monk and then abbot of the great abbey of St. Albans, where he designed his clock. His achievement is a striking example of the sophistication of medieval science, based on knowledge handed down from the Greeks and the Arabs.
Customer Reviews:
Must be good.......2006-02-25
This book was recommended in a clock magazine. It describes the making of a medieval astronomical clock in England. It must be excellent, because ordered on Jan 4, it has not yet arrived (February 24). Evidently it is in great demand, or very short supply. Amazon, in inviting me to write this review, apparently does not know that it has still not arrived. Finally, ordering it elsewhere (it was delivered within a week!) I can confirm that it is excellent, though it reuires good math skills.

Explaining what William McNeill called The Rise of the West has become the central problem in the study of global history. In Guns, Germs, and Steel Jared Diamond presents the biologist's answer: geography, demography, and ecological happenstance. Diamond evenhandedly reviews human history on every continent since the Ice Age at a rate that emphasizes only the broadest movements of peoples and ideas. Yet his survey is binocular: one eye has the rather distant vision of the evolutionary biologist, while the other eye--and his heart--belongs to the people of New Guinea, where he has done field work for more than 30 years.
Book Description
With a new chapter. The phenomenal bestsellerover 1.5 million copies soldis now a major PBS special.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Guns, Germs, and Steel is a brilliant work answering the question of why the peoples of certain continents succeeded in invading other continents and conquering or displacing their peoples. This edition includes a new chapter on Japan and all-new illustrations drawn from the television series.
Until around 11,000 BC, all peoples were still Stone Age hunter/gatherers. At that point, a great divide occurred in the rates that human societies evolved. In Eurasia, parts of the Americas, and Africa, farming became the prevailing mode of existence when indigenous wild plants and animals were domesticated by prehistoric planters and herders. As Jared Diamond vividly reveals, the very people who gained a head start in producing food would collide with preliterate cultures, shaping the modern world through conquest, displacement, and genocide.
The paths that lead from scattered centers of food to broad bands of settlement had a great deal to do with climate and geography. But how did differences in societies arise? Why weren't native Australians, Americans, or Africans the ones to colonize Europe? Diamond dismantles pernicious racial theories tracing societal differences to biological differences.
He assembles convincing evidence linking germs to domestication of animals, germs that Eurasians then spread in epidemic proportions in their voyages of discovery. In its sweep, Guns, Germs and Steel encompasses the rise of agriculture, technology, writing, government, and religion, providing a unifying theory of human history as intriguing as the histories of dinosaurs and glaciers. 32 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Very insightful, a worth while read.......2007-10-06
I highly recommend reading this book. Diamond provides compelling evidence for the disparity between civilizations. Any fan of history or just anyone curious about the rise of our current state will find a great read in Guns, Germs, and Steel.
guns,germs and steel.......2007-10-05
great perspective other than what we in western cultures traditionally have in in our relations with 3rd world countries
Dimly Focused.......2007-09-25
Though erudite and crammed with information, some of it a bit arcane, "Guns, Germs, and Steel"suffers somewhat from a blunted point of view. Is the author trying to tell us that some of our assumptions concerning the rise of cultural norms are over simplified? If so, he might have done so more forcefully with fewer words, more carefully selected facts, and perhaps a more lucid writing style. Do some societies prevail because their native tongue is more efficient and expressive than those employed by other cultures? Following that theme might have made for a more intriguing book. Are there some determinisms at work in every culture which inhibit the fulfillment of its destiny? Maybe the author thinks so, but the massive brush used to paint such a scenario causes the entire work to shimmy through a mass of frequently fascinating material without conclusions. The book's excessive length detracts from its compelling points: we live, some of the time, at the mercy of gigantic forces we do not control. Do genetics control our formation, or climate, or enormous economic systems? And who can give us convincing answers? Anthropologists, sociologists, and psychologists of course come to mind. But what of poets, seers, artists, and theologians? Maybe Jared Diamond knows, but by the time he finishes inundating us with facts, some slightly pretentious, it's hard to tell for sure. I had hoped this book's scope and claim would give convincing guidance. But because it lacks definite focus, it did not.
Guns Germs and Steel review.......2007-09-24
This is an excellent book, the hypothesis is very compelling and interesting. I watched the DVD in addition to the book and I was not disappointed at all. Worth the read!
A modern, scientific "just so" story.......2007-09-23
One of the most important books of our time; it single-handedly wipes out every justification for racism, and gets to the roots of why humans groups are where they are presently. An amazing synthesis of disciplines into one very readable explanation of how it came to pass that Europeans happened to be the ones that colonized the rest of the planet instead of some other group. The most clear example I've ever seen of why archaeology, and all the social sciences are not only important but vital to modern people. The better our understanding of the past the more likely we are to be able to let go of the emotionality that keeps us at each other's throats. A modern "just so" story.
Customer Reviews:
zzzzzzzzzzzz.......2007-10-16
Huh what? Oh yeah reviewing this book. Yeah its a feel good story about how we are all equal, but different because of our environments. Oh yeah and don't forget we were once monkies. If your scared to death of race related topics around history and the evolution of mankind and different races in general, this is the book for you. True enough racism was a creation created by those wishing to feel better about themselves and their accomplishments, but I hardly felt convinced after reading this book that some races aren't simply a bit smarter or at the very least more creative. Of course your first thought when you read that is that I'm racist. Which is so not the case. I just have a hard time conforming to political correctness at the cost of our own educational benefit. It doesn't have to mean that some races are just smarter than others either, but maybe some races are just more at ease to live life a certain way. One thing I can say for certain is that some races just seem to have the attitude that good is never enough. They always are striving to do better. You put two people on a deserted island and one has himself a hut built within a week with a hammock, chair and table built to go inside, while the other just goes and lays under a big rock or fallen tree. You know the kinds of people I'm talking about. You say, well that is not race, that is particular people in general. Is it? I'm talking as a whole society, or course there are duds in every race.
Either way, this book has sold over 1 million copies it says, with about 900000 finding their ways to the trash soon after. The rest are force fed to history students. One thing for sure, the man sure can go on and on and on and on about nothing. I think he could have gotten the same point across in about half the pages of this near 500 page book. I gave it two stars because there were a couple of good stories in there. I can't say I didn't learn anything from the book, it was just really boring and I found it exhausting to have to read so much into him trying to nicely say no one is smarter than the next. I do agree however that some societies had it harder than others based on where they lived, but some were just lazy and or didn't care.
Well-done history of the human race for the past 13,000 years.......2006-10-11
How did the West grow rich and conquer the world? It wasn't
racial superiority, as the Victorians thought - indeed, Diamond
gives evidence that the average New Guinean may well be smarter
than the average European. His own one-sentence summary of the
book is: "History followed different courses for different peoples
because of differences among peoples' environments, not because of
biological differences among the peoples themselves"[clunk]. Or, it's the
environment, stupid. Or, the West got lucky.
I'm uncomfortable with history-as-polemics, but Diamond (usually)
keeps his facts and interpretations pretty well separated. And this is a
wonderful one-volume history of the human race. It is unusual, and
refreshing, to read a history written by a distinguished and literate
biological scientist. History isn't generally considered to be science -
"it's just one damn fact after another." But then, you could say the
same for large parts of astronomy, biology & geology.
13,000 years ago, the most recent Ice Age was ending, and people
everywhere still made their living as hunter-gatherers. Diamond starts
his story at the dawn of civilization. By Chapter 3, he's recounting
Pizarro's conquest of the Inca empire in 1532. In an afternoon, 168
Spanish soldiers routed an army of 80,000, killed 7,000, and captured
the Inca emperor. It's not surprising that the Spaniards would feel
superior. But the conquistadores' invisible allies had been at work
since 1492 - smallpox from Spain had killed the previous Inca emperor
and his heir, setting off a war of succession that fatally weakened the
empire. Diseases from Europe would ultimately kill up to 95% of the
native peoples of the Americas, often before they saw their first
European. The old American cultures were doomed from first contact,
even if the Old World visitors had been peaceful explorers and traders.
12,000 years of isolation had left native Americans with no resistance to
the lethal European microbes.
Where did these diseases come from, and why didn't the Indians
return the favor by infecting Eurasia? Many came originally from
domestic animals (for example, measles and smallpox from cattle), and
required large, dense populations to evolve. The Indians had few
domestic animals - one reason why they were poorer than Eurasians,
and those (fortuitously) had no diseases that "made the jump" from
animals to humans - good evidence for Diamond's "history as luck"
hypothesis.
Diamond's history is wonderful, full of new science, strange facts, and
great anecdotes. The polemics get repetitious and a bit defensive at
times, but can be safely skimmed. This would have been a better book
had it been written as straight history, letting the facts speak for
themselves - but it's still well worth reading. Recommended.
Diamond, a professor of physiology at UCLA, is a frequent
contributor to Discover, Natural History, and Geo magazines.

Book Description
Scholar and professor Jared Diamond made a huge splash with this fascinating but controversial book, which argues that geography and environment have almost singlehandedly determined the course of human history. Dig deeper into his contentions with the information inside this invaluable reader's handbook:
* Why did Europe colonize Africa and Asia rather than the other way around?
* Why is geography the most important factor in human history?
* How has the rest of the scientific community received Diamond's theory?

Tell Me Something I Didn't Know.......2004-06-28
This book may be somethat interesting for polisci majors when they are first starting out, but once a person has their degree and their resume, it is not worth the time to read it.
Great if you are still an undergraduate!.......2000-08-04
This book is really insightful to those who are still earning their undergrad degrees. It offers many tips on resume writing, networking, and assessing ones own skills. If I were a junior in college this would have been a great source of information and inspiration. However, for someone who has been out of school for a short period of time, it doesn't offer much in the way of career guidance. It does offer good tips on graduate school and how to find the program that is right for you depending on what type of job you are interested in after. It also lists all the professional associations for a political scientist.

A fine survey of the wilderness of South Africa.......2004-11-09
Ian Player's Zulu Wilderness could also have been featured in our biography section, for really, it's as much a personal memoir of the author's experiences traveling in the African wilderness and his work as a conservationist as it is a travelogue of the region - but it's featured here for its fine survey of the wilderness of South Africa, the social and conservation issues at hand, and its exciting 'you are there' adventure sensation. Very highly recommended: gripping and hard to put down.
