Book Description
Thomas Walz tells the story of Bill Sackter, a man who spent nearly half a century in a Minnesota mental institution and emerged to blossom into a most unlikely celebrity. Bill Sackter was committed to the Faribault State Hospital at the age of seven, there to remain until he was in his fifties. At the time of his commitment, Bill’s father had recently died; thus his sole contact with his family came through rare letters from his mother.
Some years after his discharge from Faribault as a result of the movement to deinstitutionalize the mentally ill in the 1960s, Bill enjoyed a serendipitous encounter with a young college student and part-time musician, Barry Morrow. Bill became part of the Morrow family and a regular in Morrow’s music group. When Morrow accepted a job at the School of Social Work at the University of Iowa, Bill followed him to Iowa City and was put in charge of a small coffee service.
Bill became an important part of the University of Iowa community, and Wild Bill’s Coffeeshop developed into an institution. A cheerful man of great good will who was a harmonica virtuoso, Bill began to inspire affectionate legends, and his life as a celebrity began in earnest. He was named Iowa’s Handicapped Person of the Year in 1977, and two television movies were made about his life—Bill, which earned Emmy awards for cowriter Barry Morrow and Mickey Rooney (as Bill) in 1981, and Bill on His Own in 1983. Years later, Morrow would earn an Oscar for his script of Rain Man.
Through vignettes ranging from hilarious to near tragic. Walz reveals a remarkable human being. An account of Bill's life in an institution is necessarily part of the story, but there is much more: Bill’s role in helping a young child recover from a coma, his menagerie of friends, his love for a pet parakeet, his late-life Bar Mitzvah, his failure as a woodworker, his success as Santa, and his dignified death at the age of seventy.

Everbuddy Needs a Good Buddy.......2002-02-25
The story of the life and times of William ("Bill for short") Sackter is as remarkable and inspiring as any in American history. Bill's story is re-told by his good friend Professor Thomas Walz (now retired from the social work department of the University of Iowa) in such sharp, believable detail as even to go so far as to write the majority of the book from Bill's point of view, using the sort of speech, broken perhaps but very gripping, as Bill had used; this aspect brings a great deal of accuracy to the book. The Bible says in I Thessalonians 5 to rejoice always and to give thanks in all circumstances. Bill Sackter took these principles to the extreme, and as a result, made everyone who knew him take a much closer look at themselves and the world around them. His life still has that effect on people today.
I'm not going to say here what all happened in Bill's life; the book will do a much better job of that than I. However, I will simply say that this book will open your eyes to an incredible sense of optimism little known in the world we live in today. I can't imagine someone reading this book and being disappointed.
One thing more: for those of you who have seen and loved the movies "Bill" and "Bill On His Own" (which have been out of print for who-knows-how-many-years), they are available from the very good people at Wild Bill's Coffee Shop at the University of Iowa.
I Get by with a Little Help from my Friends.......2000-02-08
This book is a love feast. Story after story of Bill and the "frens" who were fortunate enough to be a part of Bill's circle, including the regulars on the bus who were cheerfully greeted upon boarding, the day care children who had a happy transition from parents dropping them off for day care, the nice lady prostitutes who enjoyed his happy harmonica tunes when he was in Washington, DC to be honored for his achievements. Not only does the book make you glad to know about Bill's magnificent gift of loving, it gives hints about how to nurture that in life. The book is for everyone who celebrates the great diversity of gifts that make life wonderful
An inspiring story, beautifully written.......1999-01-05
This uplifting story will appeal to anyone who is interested in how the human spirit overcomes great adversity. It is also of local interest to residents of Iowa City, as it recaps events that happened in this town and on this campus. A thoroughly enjoyable read that I would highly recommend.
A readable and hardwarming book........1998-12-16
Dr. Walz tells the life story of Bill Sackter's triumph over disability. The book is written from Bill's perspective and tells of his journey in a Minnesota mental institution to being named Iowa's Handicapped Person of the year. There is a wonderful Christmas story which makes this book particularly timely. I would recommend this book to readers of all ages.
A wonderful and heart-warming story.......1998-11-05
The Unlikely Celebrity is a heart-warming and uplifting story. Bill Sackter was an amazing person who had nothing but love in his heart, despite many difficult years in the Faribault State Hospital. In this day and age of almost nothing but bad news and scandal, The Unlikely Celebrity is a refreshing change, and I recommend it to everybody.

Book Description
For the uninitiated the author has obligingly supplied a definition for the slasher/splatter film: "Any motion picture which contains scenes of extreme violence in graphic and grisly detail...." For those film viewers who think this is a good thing and are more likely to select The Texas Chainsaw Massacre than The Remains of the Day, or for those who are not quite sure but are nevertheless drawn to the phantasmagoric, or for those horrified by gratuitous violence and blood for blood's sake but are researching this filmic phenomenon, this reference book provides all the gory details. From At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul Away to Zombie 2: The Dead Are Among Us, this book is an exhaustive study of the splatter films of the 1960s and 1970s. After a history of the development of the genre, the main meat of the book is a filmography. Each entry includes extensive credits, alternate names and foreign release titles; availability of the film on videocassette; availability of soundtracks and film novelization; and reviews. Extensive cross-referencing is also included.

Essential Reading For Splatterpunks and Horror Fans.......2002-07-09
Being a long time fan of both horror and splatter films, I was happy to see that someone finally devoted a book to the types of films covered in The Gorehound's Guide. I was also happy to see that it was written by Mr. Stine, whose magazine GICK! was one of my favorite reads, as is his new magazine Trashfiend. Even having already read some of the reviews in this book that were originally featured in his magazine, it was nice to have them all under one cover.
Mr. Stine's writing is both entertaining and informational. (It is easy to spot earlier reviews that were reprinted from his magazine because even though they are still good it is obvious that he has improved much over the years. Some light rewriting would have benefited these entries, especially pertaining to the overused words mentioned by the previous reviewer that used to occasionally clutter Mr. Stine's prose.) The author has an equal love for films both good and bad, which is refreshing because most film reviewers are elitist. Finding someone who can appreciate both Cronenberg's intellectualizing and gutter films like Blood Freak, and not be patronizing to the reader, is rare.
Even though it is complete, as far as I can tell, it is not a perfect book. The main reason I couldn't give it five stars is because the book is a little overpriced. I wouldn't have complained about paying a few extra bucks had the book not been so poorly edited. Typos are commonplace and the layout is occasionally inconsistent. The layout itself could also have been better too. McFarland has produced numerous quality books, some of which I own, so it is strange that they did not take the time to properly prepare this book. Hopefully, it is not because they look down on the subject matter. Time will tell, because Mr. Stine has announced that McFarland has picked up the second volume, which will be devoted to films from the 1980s. Having proclaimed his distaste for most 80s films, I am curious to see Mr. Stine's no holds barred approach used on this subject matter.
This book is still an extremely good read, and is filled with many cool ad illustrations and video box covers that make it fun to flip through as well. The Gorehound's Guide reminds me of the original Psychotronic Encyclopedia that inspired many of the older fans like myself to search out these films years ago, and hopefully it will do the same for some of the younger readers.
A mixed bag.......2002-03-13
THE GOREHOUND'S GUIDE TO THE SPLATTER FILMS OF THE '60S AND '70S is a good book, but not a great one.
To the author's credit, his knowledge seems extensive, and the reviews are enthusiastic and well-written.
On the other hand, the slim book is certainly not the 'exhaustive' guide it claims to be. Although it provides reviews of many obscure titles, I found that it concentrated too much on low-brow, T&A Eurotrash films, while overlooking a few of the era's better splatter flicks. Stine also seems to be somewhat hazy on which films to include and which films not to.
A few trivial complaints:
-The book's opening essay is a good overview, with the exception of the occasional foray into in-over-his-head scholarly contextualizing.
-The author has a propensity to overuse (to the point of distraction) certain words (eg. aforementioned, selfsame, exemplary)
-Stine's view of HALLOWEEN as the birth of the slasher film is an uninformed one, in my view.
-A rather thin, limited-in-scope volume like this book is vastly overpriced ....
I don't want to leave the impression that I disliked this review guide. It's probably worth buying for horror film fans, but readers looking for a treasure trove of quality films will find the pickings rather slim. As I said, the book focuses largely on trashy flicks (which may have been unavoidable given the work's objective).

Book Description
Bookstore shelves are lined with tomes dedicated to the finest things that life has to offer. This is all well and good, but the real entertainment is to be found not in the cream of the crop, but at the bottom of the barrel. The World's Worst is a celebration/indictment of nearly 50 infamous and little-known exemplars of the awful. In thoroughly researched, scathingly funny essays, author Mark Frauenfelder avoids the obvious and digs deep to tell the fascinating tales of the worst people, places, and things on Earth for the reader's amusement and edification. Half of the entries are also mischieviously illustrated by the author. Addictively readable, and sure to appeal to fans of the popular Worst-Case Scenario and Darwin Awards series, The World's Worst is hilariously unafraid to wallow in the mire.

Amusing but thin.......2007-07-29
This book consists of a couple dozen "chapters" of 2-3 pages each. Each chapter focuses on an arbitrarily-chosen "world's worst/disgusting." A few choices are debatable - - I would reverse the order of the two most disgusting beverages, both described in the same chapter.
The writing style is light and generally amusing but not laugh-out-loud funny. The book is likely to appeal most to pre-teens and teens because of the grossness (content is PG-13 in places), but adults can enjoy it too.
Aside from the fact that it could be funnier, my main objection is just that it's really short, what with the small page size, low page count, large number of title pages (one per chapter) and drawings. I read it in a half hour, and would have been happy to read it longer had there been more to read. But I passed it on to the rest of the family, and so we got some collective value from it. If longer, it would have earned four stars; call it 3.5.
It Can Always Get Worse.......2007-01-15
Mr. Frauenfelder has scoured the globe for interesting bits of trivia related solely by their ability to horrify. Whether natural perils or stomach turning drunken antics, the book holds one's attention. Perhaps in reading of such events and things we can take solace in our normal and safe lives. Seriously, who first decided to make a drink out of berries scavenged from the dung of a wild cat? Who first opened a fruit that smells like rotting flesh and decided to taste it?
My only complaint was that the format was extremely limited. Perhaps in keeping with the jocular tone of the work the author didn't want to get into too much detail, but detail is precisely what makes many of these things fascinating.
If you have a friend or acquaintance who is discouraged, this would be an excellent gift. Perhaps we have an innate need to constantly reestablish that things can always be worse.
Great book! But if only it comes in color.......2005-10-24
This is absolutely wonderful book. A great read in free time.
Super-Duper!.......2005-09-14
All I can say is that this book was fan-to-the-tastic! I just could not put it down. It kept me so amused that I wanted to go out and give Mark Frauenfelder a big hug. The headless rooster is intruiging and I could read that story all day long. And The Most Stubborn Soldier made my sides split in laughter. And you, dear reader, would be Word's Stupidest Consumer if you didn't buy this immediately.
Outstanding.......2005-07-13
From the unusual to the bizarre this book holds your interest throughout.
You wonder where and how the author was able to research the information provided.

For Beginners only.......2006-08-22
This is basically a rehash of the CCCS party line - absolutely NOTHING new or original in here. NOTHING about debt negotiation - reducing the principal balance, the money actually owed, not just payments or interest rates. Easy to read, a fine primer for someone who knows nothing about this stuff and is in debt trouble for the first time, but useless to someone who is fighting for his financial life against debt collection lawyers.
There's something awwwwfuwwy scwewy going on awound hewre.......2006-08-04
Hmmmmmmm. Five reviews, with all five giving five stars. All of the reviews were extremely simple, just a mere few sentences at most, for them ALL. But the best part is when I looked at "see all my reviews" for each of these people, and I see that they ALL reviewed od they sounded juuuuuuuust like the same person could have wrotene book, and one book only (this one, obviously).
Methinks sumpin' stinks! That's a litte bit too much coincidence there for me, so I am gonna do a little rank equalizin'!

An honest search for truth.......2006-11-15
As a creative nonfiction student, I have read a number of memoirs and have found few to be as honest in its search for truth as Karen Spears Zacharias' "Hero Mama." Zacharias is a natural storyteller. Her style captivates the reader as she attempts to unravel the events of her life and to understand how the tragedy of losing her father to war impacted her family. The reader is left laughing one minute and crying the next as she glimpses into Zacharias' journey from loss to redemption. I highly recommend this book to all readers.
A must read for historians and students; for daughters and families.......2006-05-02
I've read much history of war and came upon this book with interest, as I hardly ever read memoir. But I found the author's voice to be simple and refreshing, and her unjaded eye rang very true in recounting her life before and after her soldier father died in Vietnam.
So many southern men fall in war, and this down-to-earth, honest account should be on the reading lists for high schools and historians alike, as it gives an honest and moving account of the real costs of war on American and American families.
Lest We Forget.......2006-01-31
I am huge fan of Southern Fiction Writers (P.Conroy,A.R.Siddons,R.Wells.
I am also the only daughter of
S/Sgt Lewis Walton (SF:Army:MIA-1971). With my baby brother serving in Iraq, I was both hesitant and curious about this book.In my estimation, Karen's account was personal and inspirational.More importantly it sheds light on what life was like for "us kids". Her story should be shared with many and be required reading for ALL high school AND College Classes which focus on Vietnam. Vietnam affected more than just the brave soldiers serving- their parents, children and grandchildren. Kind of makes you think about Aft. and Iraq. A definite must read!
Jacke Walton
Well written and thought provoking.......2005-11-04
Karen's memoir is one of truth and inspiration. Not only because of her mother's courage and strength in the face of such tragedy, but in Karen's journey in seeking the truth about her father's death, a truth that would result in redemption for her, and her family. Hero Mama is a well-written, thought provoking memoir, and its subject, the aftermath of war and how it affects those left behind, is never more timely than right now.
I Honor My Hero Grandma.......2005-10-25
Throughout the pages of this book, Karen shares her life with all of us whether we be widows, children, or like myself grandchildren of war. Living a life of unanswered questions and digging for those answers through her own bravery, Karen recounts the cherished nine years of her life she spent with her father as well as the 30 fatherless years that lied ahead beginning on July 24, 1966. She recalls the struggles of childhood and the successes that her mother set out to achieve to raise three children on her own without choice.
Wanting answers myself to questions about a grandfather I never knew, I seized every moment of this book with overwhelming emotion. I had tears of sadness, tears of happiness and continue tears of pride for my own "Hero Grandma" who raised seven of her own children due to the loss of her husband in VN in April 1966.
"Hero Mama" will be a book you will be unable to put down once you open and read that first page. I know that you will have a different view of war after completing such an emotional journey with Karen. I am one of many who am thankful to Karen, for sharing her family's gallant journey of life with all of us. Her family remains in my heart.

Book Description
This provocative narrative history dramatically departs from the standard "rise of the West" storyline that has driven world historiography for a century. A stellar group of historians paint a decidedly different modern world history, one in which the rise of the West was not predetermined and where global integration has manifested itself in fits and starts rather than as a smooth process over the last seven centuries. This fresh interpretation, driven by powerful ideas and colorful stories, promises to engage readers for decades to come.

Excellent........2007-03-31
Unlike the previous reviewers I found Tignor's text to be a highly lucid and comprehensive account of world history. If you have not read much history than you will have to be patient at first with the writing style as it is chock full of information and concepts that can seem disconnected an quite abstract. Yet, if you have the perseverance to stick with it, you be rewarded with a rich understanding of the themes that run through the narrative of human history. Strongly recommended.
Organization? Is that not in the authors' dictionary?.......2005-11-02
While this book contains valuable information it seems horribly put together in seemingly random order. Many-a-times I found that I would be reading the exact same sentence in Chapter 3 as in Chapter 4. The authors largely ignored any sort of geographical or chronological organization and just puts sections in wherever the mood struck them.

Try Harder.......2003-10-30
Not only does this provocative narrative dramatically depart from the admittedly tired "rise of the West" storyline - it departs from the purpose of an educational text altogether. The writing in this book is, in a word, pathetic; the authors don't even appear to have a grasp of how to construct a paragraph. The powerful ideas and the context-hungry hodge-podge of stories in this interpretation of the history of civilization since 1300 are skewed by the authors' blatant preoccupation with the cultural dis-integration of contemporary Globalism - to the point of affecting the architecture of the book itself. Readers who flee from the possibility of understanding anything will certainly be engaged by the colorful pictures in this book. The rest of you would do well to keep shopping.

Book Description
This book challenges the standard conception of the Middle Ages as a time of persecution for Jews. Jonathan Elukin traces the experience of Jews in Europe from late antiquity through the Renaissance and Reformation, revealing how the pluralism of medieval society allowed Jews to feel part of their local communities despite recurrent expressions of hatred against them.
Elukin shows that Jews and Christians coexisted more or less peacefully for much of the Middle Ages, and that the violence directed at Jews was largely isolated and did not undermine their participation in the daily rhythms of European society. The extraordinary picture that emerges is one of Jews living comfortably among their Christian neighbors, working with Christians, and occasionally cultivating lasting friendships even as Christian culture often demonized Jews.
As Elukin makes clear, the expulsions of Jews from England, France, Spain, and elsewhere were not the inevitable culmination of persecution, but arose from the religious and political expediencies of particular rulers. He demonstrates that the history of successful Jewish-Christian interaction in the Middle Ages in fact laid the social foundations that gave rise to the Jewish communities of modern Europe.
Elukin compels us to rethink our assumptions about this fascinating period in history, offering us a new lens through which to appreciate the rich complexities of the Jewish experience in medieval Christendom.

Book Description
From the Cold War to the Berlin Wall to the crisis in the Balkans--here is a compelling look at the people and events that have shaped our world.
In this, the second half of his narrative history of the twentieth century, Edward Kantowicz explores the key events, personalities, and ideas that have shaped the globe since World War II. Kantowicz highlights the most significant events of the period--including the Cold War between the superpowers and the Second and Third World revolts against imperialism--in prose as accessible as the nightly news. This work provides valuable perspective as we leave the most tumultuous century in history and begin a new one.

Book Description
This book isn't just a guide to beekeeping or a honey cookbook; it's both. No other book on the market provides an in-depth review of beekeeping and what honey is good for and how to use it.
Beautifully illustrated, the Backyard Beekeeper is perfect for the health-conscious person who wants to sweeten up their life by saying no to processed sugars and yes to eating organic, healthy food.
This book is the complete "honey bee" resource with general information on bees; a how-to guide to the art of bee keeping and how to set up, care for, and harvest your own hives; as well as tons of fun facts and projects that are bee related. The second half of the book is the complete guide to honey. It reviews the different types of honey and their health effects as well as provides hundreds of ideas and recipes for using honey in recipes, cosmetically in facemasks and shampoos, and for medicinal uses.
Customer Reviews:
you need to have good vision to read this.......2007-10-09
This book has a lot of good information in it, the Photos are great, but the small and light print on the glossy pages make it very hard to read unless you just happen to have a magnifying glass.
It's Okay.......2007-07-20
But I wanted to read about Top Bar Hives and this book didn't really go into any detail about them.
Good beginner book.......2007-07-01
This covers bee keeping well for a beginner. Wish that they discussed more organic options for theatment of problems.
Great Pictures.......2007-05-14
This was an easy to read book for beginner beekeepers. This book had great pictures and was helpful for any level beekeeper.
Great.......2007-03-14
