5 out of 5 stars A Great Role Model.......2003-10-13

I enjoyed reading this very interesting book. It along with the autobiographies of Ben Franklin and Andrew Carnegie give many insights on how to raise yourself up from poverty and contribute to society.

His insights on the court system based on his 10 years as a judge I think are useful today. Read this before hiring an attorney or going to court.

Most tantelizing are his descriptions on how he raised and related to his children and helped them to become successful. He clearly was a stern, strict Presbyterian. But at the same time he was a warm loving parent. His insights on how to raise children to be both successful and close to their parents are more useful than most current child rearing books.

And of course for many the most useful part of this book is his description of how he raised himself up from a poor immigrant farmer to the founder of one of America's most wealthy families.

I come from a very poor family and now own my own business. I have adult children who I have a good relationship with. I have read this book 3 times over the last 10 years. Each time I get more insights on how to lead a better more successful life.

I have probably read 200 books in the last 10 years. I think this is one of the best. And one I enjoyingly return to every 2 to 5 years.

3 out of 5 stars John Montgomery Ward was a True Labor Leader; he deserves more Scholarly Analysis.......2007-06-04

One of the most contentious issues throughout the history of major league baseball is employee relations. The owners and the players have been fighting it out throughout the more than the 150 years of professional baseball. Most of that time the owners have had the upper hand, but it might not have turned out that way had John Montgomery Ward gotten his way. He led an effort in the 1880s and 1890s to gain more authority, and thereby more money, for the players in the National League. It failed, but the story is fascinating; modestly told in this short biography.

Ward deserves better. His off field activities are far more important than anything he did on the diamond, and author David Stevens missed an opportunity to analyze in depth his employee relations efforts, especially his attempt to form a union and the creation of the ill-fated Player's League. Of course, Stevens talks about these efforts, but I had hoped for a more in-depth, scholarly discussion. For such an analysis I would recommend "Never Just a Game: Players, Owners, and American Baseball to 1920" (University of North Carolina Press, 1994) by Robert Fredrick Burk. There are also other better biographical works on Ward, including a superb biography by Bryan Di Salvatore, "A Clever Base-Ballist: The Life and Times of John Ward Montgomery" published by Pantheon Books in 1999.

Simpson Roseanne Barr and many more.

4 out of 5 stars An insightful book on the career of a legendary Hollywood PI.......1997-11-18

I disagree with the review which states Don over uses his poetic license to show the reader he "saves the day", that's what private investigators do. People hire private investigators to succeed, and that's what Don does. Crutchfield captures the essence of the "old guard" gum shoe. The old guard uses congnition instead of ammunition. I purchased Don's book in Boca Raton, FL recently while I was conducting a case, and found it to be well written, certainly in the style of a very professional private investigator. The case histories and side commentary really hits home. I look forward to some day in which I can meet Don and tell him how much he's influenced my career. Patrick K. 4 out of 5 stars I'd give it a B+ rating.......1997-08-27

I thought this book was pretty good. Don Crutchfield wrote as if he was talking to you. If you like gossip and juicy hearsay, this is the book for you. He has inside stories to the Beatles, Marlon Brando, Terry Moore, Jerry Lewis, Michael Jackson, and more. I've read other "tell all" books before, but what I thought Don brought, that other autthors couldn't, was a objective perspective to these celebrities' lives. As far as I know, these stories are true but I'm sure a little embellished. The one thing that got on my nerves was the way Don always came out as the hero, the one guy who was right, "If if wasn't for me...". That theme was all worn out by Chapter 3. Overall, just fun, light entertainment.

              Book Description

Recruited to be a lecturer on a group tour of Indonesia, Edward M. Bruner decided to make the tourists aware of tourism itself. He photographed tourists photographing Indonesians, asking the group how they felt having their pictures taken without their permission. After a dance performance, Bruner explained to the group that the exhibition was not traditional, but instead had been set up specifically for tourists. His efforts to induce reflexivity led to conflict with the tour company, which wanted the displays to be viewed as replicas of culture and to remain unexamined. Although Bruner was eventually fired, the experience became part of a sustained exploration of tourist performances, narratives, and practices.

Synthesizing more than twenty years of research in cultural tourism, Culture on Tour analyzes a remarkable variety of tourist productions, ranging from safari excursions in Kenya and dance dramas in Bali to an Abraham Lincoln heritage site in Illinois. Bruner examines each site in all its particularity, taking account of global and local factors, as well as the multiple perspectives of the various actors—the tourists, the producers, the locals, and even the anthropologist himself. The collection will be essential to those in the field as well as to readers interested in globalization and travel.

If you are interested to see what other companies are doing, who have no relevance to yours, this book is for you. If you are looking for practical guidance that you can use in your own situation, buy something else.

4 out of 5 stars Nice book, but read this for risk management fundamentals.......2004-12-26

After reading `Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off', I must say that I can recommend it. Buy it if you want to know how large companies have been dealing with risk management in the past years. This book will not really help you understand the fundamentals of risk management, and that isn't the primary focus of this book.

I would recommend that you do not read `Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off' just by itself. I highly recommend `Controlling the controllable: the management of safety' by Dr. Jop Groeneweg. This is a must-read if you are interested in risk management and it will give you an good basis for reading `Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off'.

`Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off', unlike what may be suggested, isn't about companies on the cutting edge of risk management. In my opinion that's only partly true. These companies are dealing with highly visible risks, but in risk management that is the easy part of the job. Dealing with the invisible risks, most often those risks lurking in a company's own organization, is much harder. It is unfortunate that the Tripod risk management methodology isn't discussed in this book because it is THE methodology for integrated risk management.

I would recommend that those interested also read up on a risk management tool called BowTie XP, which really represents the leading edge of risk management research today. I believe the majority of companies in this book will be using BowTie XP for risk management in the coming years.

`Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off' is quite readable and I enjoyed reading it. When you read it, realize that risk management is evolving quickly. Don't try to copy the companies in this book with respect to risk management, unless you only want to deal with highly visible risks.

5 out of 5 stars Great Lessons in De-Risking, in a Very Readable Book !.......2002-03-03

After the Enron meltdown, risk management is as hot as fire. You can?t pick up the newspaper without stories about all the risks facing businesses and investors.

I run a medium size business in a big city. If you want to ?de-risk? a company, you need to learn from managers who are already doing it and doing it well. This book has very detailed cases about the risk management programs at companies like Microsoft and DuPont with managers telling their own stories. The book is short on fancy theories and long on practical ideas.

I admit I was surprised to see Chase bank among these elite companies. Chase wrote off $500 million because of Enron. But you have to wonder how much more they would have written off without a good risk management program. No one ever said these systems are perfect. The Chase chapter even describes two big problems the bank had with their bookkeeping and how they were fixing them.

This book has everything you need to get started in a good risk management program. Lord knows businesses had better manage their risks or they?re history.

5 out of 5 stars Hero of the Revolution in the South.......2007-07-12

A great read. Could have been titled The Wagon Master. It was the efforts of troops led by people like Morgan that held off the British long enough for Greene to 'succeed' and for the French fleet to arrive.

                      3 out of 5 stars Captures Morgan's Personality, but...........2006-09-13

Higginbotham does a credible job of revealing Morgan's personality, character and genius as a military leader, particularly since there is little if anything known about Morgan before he appears in Winschester VA at the age of 18. The book reads fairly easily and describes the elements of the Revolution's Southern Campaign in which Morgan participated, but Higganbotham seems to have a penchant for defending Horatio Gates in a positive light I have not seen before. He seems to gloss over most of Gates's personality flaws and military errors to render him more effective than he probably was. This treatment of Gates raises the issue that face many biographers; i.e. they take a liking (or disliking)to a character and sometimes use literary license to make their points. This is the first biography I've read on Daniel Morgan, who is portrayed as a classic American hero, rising from nowhere to have a major impact on history. My interpretation of Higginbotham's characterization has me believing that without Morgan the Revolution may have been lost because Morgan's victory at the Cowpens effectively set the stage for Nathaneal Greene to later drive Cornwallis from South Carolina to Yorktown where Washington and the French conducted the final battle of the war. Stuff I love to read and talk about: unheralded heroes and certainly Morgan appears to be one of the most important in America's fight for freedom. But I have to wonder whether Higginbotham has skewed the facts about Morgan as he seemed to do with Gates. I hope not.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Resource on an Underrated Patriot.......2006-06-21

One can hardly pick up a book that has anything to do with the Revolutionary War without reading something ranging from a tidbit to several chapters on General Daniel Morgan. The significance Morgan played in the war for American independence cannot be overstated. And yet, only two biographies have been published on this heroic figure that played such an integral part in American history. This book DANIEL MORGAN: REVOLUTIONARY RIFLEMAN, by Don Higginbotham, being one of them.

It borders on travesty that General Morgan is a virtual unknown in American society and certainly unknown among anyone lacking basic knowledge of American history. Higginbotham accurately portrays Morgan as a man among men; a portrait of the rugged individualism that characterized so many of our founding generation.

Morgan, perhaps as much as Washington himself, I believe, had as much to do with winning the war for independence as any single individual. Many might disagree with that statement, but consider the outcome if Cornwallis' southern campaign had been successful. Consider the consequences if the southern revolutionary army had been annihilated. It is more than likely that there would have been a different outcome at Yorktown had it not been for the commanding leadership and battle tactics of the "Old Wagoner". It can certainly be argued that Morgan's actions at Cowpens, where he soundly gave Tarleton's light infantry a `Devil of a Whoopin', turned the tide in the south. And though he missed action at Guilford Courthouse due to illness, his same battle tactics were employed with success.

This is not one of the best books you will ever read, but considering the lack of choices on Morgan, this is a must read for knowledge on the General's life and accomplishments. Perhaps in the near future, one of today's acclaimed historians will render an updated version, but until then, put Higginbotham's book on your reading list. The book is brief, but concise, and will lend a candid look at a somewhat forgotten, and often overlooked American hero.

A terrific telling of one of America's first heroes. Dan Morgan and his kind are the ones who helped birth America. Higginbotham's writing is slightly dry, but the content more than makes up for it.

                      A simply outstanding story!

5 out of 5 stars Dan the Man: Frontiersman, Patriot, Tactition, Leader.......2003-07-02

Dan Morgan epitomizes the rough-and-ready individualist who made America.

A frontiersman from the Shennandoah Valley, Morgan knew a hard early life that steeled him for the physical challenges of his Revolutionary War service. A wagoneer in Gen. Braddock's Expedition, Morgan endured 400 lashes after tangling with a British soldier (he claimed only 399 and loved to regale listeners with the fact that he still owed the British one miscounted lash).

His physical endurance and prowess was combined with the ability to lead men and a superior ability to plan and manage battlefield tactics. He has been described as one of the Revolution's best battlefield commanders and this book gives plenty of examples to support that claim.

Morgan's service to our Republic was remarkable. Although a failure, his part in the Quebec expedition helped make possible one of the most grueling campaigns military history. Traveling overland through the spine of backwoods Maine, Morgan helped lead outnumbered American forces to a wintry showdown that could have produced a fourteenth colony in revolt against the Crown. In fact, Morgan stood at the moment of victory; had his desire to keep driving into the city after breaching its under-defended backside been followed, the city could have been captured. As it was, hesitancy on the part of other American commanders led to defeat and Morgan's capture. He had to endure a period of imprisonment until paroled.

That parole was a costly one for the British. It allowed Morgan, when exchanged, to play his decisive roles at Saratoga and Cowpens.

Morgan's ability to lead riflemen and read the battlefield was crucial to Gate's success at Saratoga (which led to French recognition, support and the resources to chance complete independence). Morgan's later brilliance at Cowpens, site of the famed double envelopment of Tarleton's British Legion, led to the series of events that ended with Cornwallis being pinned against the James at Yorktown. Cowpens, arguably the most decisive American victory of the war, was brilliant. Morgan, as the American commander, threaded strategic understanding, leadership (he had to persuade bayonetless American militia that they had a crucial role to fulfill in the battle and would be allowed to retire once fulfilling it), battlefield planning and tactical control to produce a victory that is rightly studied to this day.

A character, Morgan is one of the men who made the Revolution a success. This highly readable account develops the man, his character and his military personae in introducing the modern reader to a historic figure who needs to be more widely appreciated for his great effect on the success of our founding.

                      Book Description

In an attempt to stop the legendary Barbary Pirates of North Africa from hijacking American ships, William Eaton set out on a secret mission to overthrow the government of Tripoli. The operation was sanctioned by President Thomas Jefferson, who at the last moment grew wary of intermeddling in a foreign government and sent Eaton off without proper national support. Short on supplies, given very little money and only a few men, Eaton and his mission seemed doomed from the start. He triumphed against all odds, recruited a band of European mercenaries in Alexandria, and led them on a march across the Libyan Desert. Once in Tripoli, the ragtag army defeated the local troops and successfully captured Derne, laying the groundwork for the demise of the Barbary Pirates. Now, Richard Zacks brings this important story of Americas first overseas covert op to life.

I Just finished a book titled "The Pirate Coast" by Robert Zacks. A very interesting historical account of how a handful of Marines along with General William Eaton embarked on America's first overseas covert op. They traipsed across the Sahara in an endeavor to free American soldiers that were captured and enslaved by Barbary pirates- Moslems. It's an interesting chronicle of how Moslems enslaved Christians, Americans & Europeans dating as far back as the 1700's.

Even back then we were the only nation with the cajones to stand up to these despicable pirates. It was during a time when many nations were intimidated into paying "tribute' to these Moslem nations in order not to be enslaved/ or unlawfully seized from the waters.

It was during these troubling times when a US Navy vessel(USS Philadelphia) ran aground in the harbor of Tripoli-(now Libya) and was captured along with over 270 American soldiers. The Bey or Pasha of Tripoli - Yusef Karamanli was a ruthless thug that murdered his brother, de-throned his father, & exiled his next older brother, Hamet, while keeping Hamet's wife & children hostage in the castle; as an incentive for him not to return and stake claim to his rightful throne. Yusef enjoyed the notoriety of the first foreign ruler ever to declare war on the U.S.A.

I think you would enjoy it.

From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli....

Courage, adventure, and political intrigue. Accurate historical account of early American foreign policy toward Muslim states. Many parallels to issues facing America today.

And "avoid a land war in asia" should be modified to include North Africa. medaling in the affairs of foreign governments has led us to no good outcomes for a very long time. Mr. Zacks makes is abundantly clear that the grounding of the ship Philadelphia was a minor problem compared with its premature abandonment. And that the secret mission of Pres. Thomas Jefferson and his agent Mr. Eaton led us to far more grief than if we had just arrived with the fleet and demanded an end of this open sea piracy.

A great read for all of those who love politics as theater and are interested in sea stories. Reads like a Patric O'Brien novel but has the full truth in it.

                      'Small Fonts'

My biggest issue w/ this book is that the font used is kinda tiny, about 8 or 9 pt. size. I noticed this when I started having headaches after reading it, which I didn't used to get when reading other books.

Comparing it to other Trade Paperback Books, the others normally use 10 pt., rather than the 8-9 pt. size used on this one.

Apparently, this is a rather long book, since even w/ the small font size, it is already almost 500 pages long. If they had used the normal 10 pt. font size, the book would've ballooned to 600-700 pages, adding to the costs & perhaps made the book unattractive.

The book could've likely used more careful editing, trimming it down to around 500 pages using the usual 10 pt. font size.

I sort of regretted buying this book, its kinda expensive, & am not sure if I will ever be able to finish it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Telling of an Obscure Story.......2007-05-30

Richard Zacks' "Pirate Coast: Thomas Jefferson, the First Marines, and the Secret Mission of 1805" is an engrossing tale of one of the first US overseas "covert" missions. While also telling the story of the First Barbary War, Zack concentrates on the energetic and ambitious William Eaton, whose audacious plan was to march over 500 miles across the North African desert to attack Tripoli (one of the Barbary States) from land.

Eaton's successful attack on the town of Derna was a key element in the peace made to conclude the war. However, upon his return to the United States, Eaton fell into political conflict with President Thomas Jefferson and was never compensated for much of his personal expenses from the expedition - and he eventually died a broken alcoholic.

"Pirate Coast" is not a full telling of the First Barbary War, but Zacks gives enough background that the reader can follow the big picture while also focusing on Eaton's courageous and daring mission. Zacks also brings the many historical characters to life, showing how their personalities impacted the war, the mission, and the aftermath. This is an excellent book for anyone interesting in US history, military history, or who wants to learn more about this forgotten war.

                      Book Description

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase safety," stated Benjamin Franklin in 1759, "deserve neither liberty nor safety." Unfortunately, in today's climate of fear, the government, the media and plenty of other American citizens see things differently. If you are not willing to accept "some restrictions in civil liberties to guarantee security," (as Tom Brokaw and others have phrased it), this book is essential reading. In it, Michael Chesbro shares hundreds of simple but effective measures you can take - short of armed revolution - to preserve your privacy and sovereignty in the face of Big Brother run amok. By being aware of the various threats to financial privacy, computer and online security, private communications, home security and more, and by employing these techniques to combat them, you can protect yourself from rogue government agents and meddling bureaucracies as well as nosy neighbors, prying family members, identity thieves, stalkers, solicitors and other enemies of privacy and personal liberty.

5 out of 5 stars Privacy Techniques That Really Work!.......2005-12-27

I bought this book about a year ago, and started applying many of the techniques recommended by Mr. Chesbro. In short... these techniques work and they work very well!

I no longer get annoying calls from telemarketers - haven't had a call in months.
Most of the "junk mail" has disappeared from my mailbox.
I was even able to avoid paying some fees assessed by my city by following Mr. Chesbro's advice to ask the government about their authority to assess those fees in the first place (the city admitted to having made a mistake once they looked into my challenge).

Other things in "The Privacy Handbook" such as improving the physical security of my home, or buying a paper shredder to keep an identity thief from gathering information about me from my trash also make me feel safer and more secure in my personal life.

I have followed may of the steps recommended for improving security of my finances and bank accounts, and have greater peace of mind regarding my financial privacy now.

There are many other things in the book, such as ways to encrypt email and secure telephone conversations, which I don't use, but which would certainly be of use to anyone who does business online or needs to talk about sensitive matters on the telephone.

I read in another review of this book that some of the techniques will "attract attention". This may be true if you are some kind of a criminal or low-life scum trying to hide your crimes and perversions. However, if you are an honest, hard-working man or woman who wants more privacy in their life, and wants the right to be left alone - this book is for you.

"The Privacy Handbook" teaches techniques that really work! Highly Recommended Based On My Personal Experience With What Is Taught In This Book!!!

1 out of 5 stars A few good ideas - some VERY BAD ideas.......2004-09-19

This book is about personal PRIVACY. Unfortunately, Mr. Chesbro advocates things in this book that will ATTRACT attention. Many of his ideas are okay and can help maintain a low-level of personal privacy. However, he goes off on anti-government tangents and advocates things like questioning governmental authority. In fact, on page 209, Mr. Chesbro writes, "Whenever confronted with a government regulation, policy, or agency requirement, the first question you should always ask is, "What gives you the authority to require me to do this (or prohibit me from doing this)?" The book is loaded with ideas to confront the government and "stand up for liberty." Well, that's all fine and good, but NOT for a book called, "The Privacy Handbook." Coming across as an anti-government rebel with a cause is the BEST way to get the spotlight ON you - not off. In too many cases, Mr. Chesbro recommends doing things that would do nothing more than flag you as one to watch and offer you LESS - not more - privacy. Better book - by far - is J.J. Luna's "How To Be Invisible." I was VERY disappointed with "The Privacy Handbook."

5 out of 5 stars If You Want Privacy... You NEED This Book!.......2003-04-11

This is certainly the best privacy book available bar none. The Privacy Handbook teaches you step-by-step how to protect your personal privacy from every type of snoop, be it your mother-in-law or Big Brother.

I am very concerned with my personal privacy and since I started using the techniques taught in the Privacy Handbook I have stopped getting telemarketing calls. I have stopped getting junk mail and e-mail spam. I have set up a private communications network to talk with my friends, and more.... all based on this book.

The author (Michael Chesbro) is some kind of a former government "spook" and seems to have direct insight and hand-on experience and knowledge of things like Carnivore and other government surveillance programs.

The Privacy Handbook is an absolute must for the privacy-minded individual!

                        Book Description

This useful book is designed to teach natural resources professionals how to be more effective in solving conservation and environmental policy problems. Its presentation of basic concepts, case studies, and "real world concerns" provides a deeper understanding of the policy process and makes the book an invaluable aid for students and practitioners in such fields as wildlife biology, conservation biology, forestry, range management, ecosystem management, and sustainable development. Tim W. Clark begins by describing the challenges faced by natural resources professionals. He then explains how the substance and process of policy analysis and decision making can be improved by using a policy sciences framework that takes into account biological, social, political, and institutional considerations. Finally he reflects on how issues of human rights and morality should affect natural resources management and policy analysis. The book is very user-friendly.
