5 out of 5 stars Life on the Road - A runners log.......2003-08-21

I'm a new runner. I was told to keep a log book and found this accidentally. I feel lucky to have found this book. Every Saturday I read an "entry" before I start my long runs. The insight, humor and emotional experiences shared in this "much more than a logbook" helps motivate me to keep running for the rest of the week. It's good to know that other runners face the many of the same feelings and challenges as are shared so eloquently in this journal. This guy writes for all of us Middle of the pack runners! Thanks Mr. Caldwell!

5 out of 5 stars Life on the Road: A Runner's Log.......2003-08-20

Very motivational and inspiring. I'm a marathoner and I, too, can relate to many of the passages on emotions and training cahllenges that the author has experienced. To call this just a runner's log does this journal a disservice. It's a very functional log book which has journal "entries" that make you want to get out there and put in those miles! Thumbs up! Can't wait to see the next version of this if there is one.

    Product Description

Known as the bald cowboy in The Magnificent Seven and the sexy, charismatic male lead in The King and I, Yul Brynner was a Hollywood paragon of masculinity. Beyond his distinctive appearance and distinguished acting career was a life of intrigue and concocted tales surrounding his youth. Born Youl Bryner in Russia, he played gypsy guitar and worked as a trapeze clown until a severe injury motivated him to pursue his interest in theater. This biography takes readers through Brynner’s formative years in Russia, France and China and describes his journey from sweeping stages in Parisian theaters to a versatile career in theater, television and film, reaching a stardom that began and ended with the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I. With accounts of his personal and professional successes and failures, the book includes his four marriages, his numerous and notorious affairs with such stars as Judy Garland, Joan Crawford and Ingrid Bergman, and his 1985 death from lung cancer. A filmography details his movies and plays, and appendices outline his work in documentaries, music and soundtracks, radio programs and television.

    5 out of 5 stars A Complex Human Being.......2007-01-19

Who can explain it? I was attracted to Yul Brynner's weird chemistry even before the concept of puberty dawned on my sheltered existence. He was one of those rare individuals with real animal magnetism (a kind of cultured feralness crouching behind an active mind) that is simply catnip to certain women. This biography, more than others, is less obsequious to the legend of Yul Brynner. It lays the facts of Brynner's life out "like a patient etherized upon a table" to quote T.S. Eliot. The ambition. The effortless talent. The prevaricating. The opportunism. The perfectionism. The womanizing. The egoism. The humanitarianism. Made me wish I'd been a dinner partner of his for just one evening, provided he was in a good mood, which most of the time he was -- if things were going his way.
Many of his male contemporaries recall Brynner's almost pathological need to "one up" everyone around him. Sensitive about his height (5'8"), perhaps he (like Napoleon) felt he had something "to prove."
Typecast by his bald physiognomy and in thrall to a lavish personal lifestyle, Brynner was often forced to accept film roles that were dogged by a perverse luck -- he'd pick a winning director but get a lousy script, or be in a third-rate vehicle with another acclaimed actor that would tank. Too many times he ended up in movies that were simply too little in scope for his huge talent or which typecast him in an imperious role, constantly reprising "The King and I."
Like most males whose father figure is absent or emotionally unavailable during the formative years, Brynner had a hole somewhere inside his psyche that he could never fill. He loved children, yet could not stay with the families he created. He had a great sense of humor, yet could sometimes be found silent, alone, with a tear coursing down his cheek at some dark memory of hurt. He was a great humanitarian for refugee relief and a thoughtful friend -- yet at one and the same time, egotistical, ruthlessly demanding, and given to living well above his means. Nevertheless, he possessed qualities that made his wives not only fall for him, but grieve his loss for the rest of their lives. He was the love of her life to Virginia Gilmore (his first wife) who never fully recovered from the loss of him, and Doris Brynner never gave up his name, saying that she would always love him but could not live with him. Others who fell under his spell included Judy Garland, Ingrid Bergman, and Marlene Detreich. Brynner was larger than life, a part of the "old school" which includes Douglas, Lancaster, and Burton, and his final resting place is an anti-climax to his flamboyant life. The weathered stone, standing by itself in an obscure church yard in France can be located on the Internet. Short of stature or no, the man's talent and sheer personality warrant a massive cairn to his memory.

5 out of 5 stars Life of the King.......2006-05-05

I recently stumbled on this biography. I meant to flip through it to look up some trivia and ended up reading it cover to cover. It's an eye-opening and quite moving account of the actor we've come to associate with The King & I. The book details much of the circumstances around Brynner's films which I found most interesting. It's sad that such a gifted actor with a talent for directing ended up making so many B-movies. I really enjoyed this book. His rocky relationship with his son (no pun intended), adds a new dimension to his persona. The only drawback for me is that some of the events are told out of synch. For a good companion piece, read Yul Brynner: The Inscrutable King by Jhans Robbins. The chronology of events are clearer there. Plus, it has a complete list of Brynner's works.

    5 out of 5 stars Sad tale.......2005-11-21

I recently saw some movies of Yul Brynner and was much impressed by his talents as an actor and his incredible screen presence. I read this book to find out more about the man behind the actor. I felt extremely sad after learning how he would put fame above family and friends. Myself an immigrant twice in two different countries, and having to learn French as a second language and then English a while later, just like Yul had to, I experienced the same exclusion and injustice as he did and I understand his anger against the Fox executives and those who profited from the actors. I wished he did get a chance to become a movie director...and succeed as such because his life probably would have been very different. It is ironic that he would hate his father so much to the point of wanting to kill him for not being there for him but that he, would too, abandon his wives and children. Despite being disappointed in his behavior, he remains the greatest actor to my eyes. Bless his heart and I wish that in his next life, he would be a more forgiving and compassionate person.

5 out of 5 stars The man who would be king.......2005-09-19

This excellent biography of Yul Brynner, written by his son Rock, is a must-read for all of the King's many fans. It clarifies the often-conflicting stories of Yul Brynner's birth, describes his childhood in Paris (where he spent his time entertaining in gypsy night clubs), and his memorable stint on Broadway in "The King and I" in the 1950s. His film successes, such as "The King and I" and "The Ten Commandments," and his many screen flops are discussed, but it is Yul, the family man, who is at the center of the book.

When Rock was young, his father doted on him; even after his parents divorced and Yul moved on through three more marriages, the two were close. But when his son failed to achieved stability or success as a young adult, Yul summarily cut off all ties with him for a while. In the 1980s, out of money (as always), Yul began an eight-year tour of "The King and I" which was hugely successful, but he identified with the role so completely, he became an unreasonable tyrant, alienating himself from those closest to him. He kept doing eight shows a week even after he was diagnosed with cancer, dying just weeks after his 4,633rd performance as the King.

This is a riveting biography about a fascinating man.

    5 out of 5 stars Yul Brynner - A Flawed King.......2003-06-22

This book, written by his son Rock Brynner, is a poignant and revealing look into the life of his famous father, Yul Brynner. Rock unveils "The King," and shows that his father was a flawed, and sometimes wreckless man behind the "King's" facade. Rock uncovers how life was growing up with his famous father, and how he could never live up to the expectations of a King. Rock's literary style mix fact with his own feelings about - The Man Who Would Be King.

The book covers so many different areas of the relationship between the media and sports and does so with so many examples, studies, etc. It's easy to read, though a couple of chapters seem to drag a little bit. From gender issues to the differences between athletes from different sports, this academic-style book is worth the read.

The search words appear on the left-hand page and the coordinating puzzle on the right-hand page. From a lounging position it's necessary to bend the left-hand pages around the back of the book, which is difficult because this book is very thick. And then you need to keep flipping the book back and forth from the search word page to the puzzle page. This book is best used sitting at a desk. Not a relaxing or enjoyable puzzle experience.

              Book Description

Call it a control thing, but until recently–or, more specifically, until the availability of digital raw camera formats–you simply weren’t ready to make the move to digital photography. Raw formats, however, changed all of that by allowing you to retrieve images before any in-camera processing has been performed. Photoshop’s Adobe Camera Raw plug-in makes that process even easier by providing a standardized way of accessing and working with these uncompressed digital negatives in your favorite image-manipulation software. In the first volume devoted exclusively to the topic, best-selling author Bruce Fraser shows you how to take advantage of Adobe Camera Raw to set white balance, optimize contrast and saturation, handle noise, correct tint, and recover lost detail in images before converting them to another format. After learning about the raw formats themselves, you’ll discover hands-on techniques for exposing and shooting for digital raw, using Bridge, Adobe’s new standalone file browser, to preview images and automate tasks, and building a workflow around the digital raw process.

The text in the book is very good, I really like it. Unfortunately, pictures are not that great, you cannot see those small differences author tries to show you. I think print quality suffers. But I still strongly advise to get this book if you are in RAW and PhotoShop.

              2 out of 5 stars Yawn.......2007-07-07

Personally, I felt this book to be redundant and a wordy tale of how to organize files. I tried to read it but kept dozing off. For me, I just want the writer to get to the point. Anyone well versed in Adobe products will already know most of this information. And let's face it, we all just want to be creative and take pictures. Do we really need to know every--little--minute--detail on how a RAW file is constructed?

For me, I could stand to hear the short version of RAW Files 101. I agree, a little knowledge is great. Also, would like to know how Bridge can be used to process them. But honestly, I was really hoping it would detail the differences of Canon's "Digital Photo Professional" to Adobe's conversion plug in. Nothing.

              I'm disappointed...

              5 out of 5 stars finally learning.......2007-07-05

I have been shooting camera raw for quite a while. However, I had no background in digital technology or software. As a result, I'd been bringing my images directly into Photoshop, without doing any editing in Bridge. According to this book, there are many reasons to do the opposite. That is, most editing should be done in bridge, which is where Adobe's camera raw is located. I didn't know that until I read this. And, as I've not finished this book yet, I'm sure it's got alot more to teach me.
I would say that if you came to digital photography from film photography, this book has alot to teach you about a printing process very different from darkroom work.

I personally found this book to be, in many places, way over my head and in fact preferred the camera raw material in Scott Kelby's book - The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital photographers.

              Book Description

DESCRIPTION: After the success of his brother Dave Pelzer's bestselling memoir A Boy Called "It", Richard B. Pelzer touched thousands with his own heart-wrenching account of an abusive childhood in his New York Times bestseller A Brother's Journey. Now, in A TEENAGER'S JOURNEY, Richard reveals how the horrific treatment he endured as a boy affected him throughout his teenage years. As an adolescent, he found himself turning to drugs--even contemplating suicide--as he struggled to separate and live an autonomous life, away from his horrifying family situation. His salvation finally came when a surrogate family took him in, offering comfort, hope, and unconditional love--and, ultimately, the transformational power of forgiveness.

              2 out of 5 stars First review.......2006-06-25

I often read reviews of books that I am considering for purchase. I read "A Brother's Journey" and found it to be a better read, that kept my interest and that had some good writing. With this book, "A Teenager's Journey" I was somewhat disappointed. Since I depend so often on others reviews of books, I am beginning to think that I need to take the time to review what I have purchased. Again, I sympathize with both Richard and David, but this book did not make me feel strong emotions that made me want to turn page after page to see what would happen next.

2 out of 5 stars Lousy rush job........2006-06-05

I wrote an Amazon review of "A Brother's Journey" in which I called the book emotionally accurate and even a "shining achievement". It was.
This book on the other hand is by far the most poorly written of all the Pelzer brothers books.
Richard wrote this book using diaries he kept during the years he was a drug addict. Did he copy passages verbatim from his drug diaries?
I'm guessing he did because he was under pressure from Time-Warner to get this money maker on the road.
I hate to say anything bad about one of these boys and I do believe their story but this book is horrifically overpriced for under 200 pages. It costs more than a paper back copy of My Story that contains all three of David's books.
The reason I suggest he copied passages verbatim from the drug diaries is that this is truly one of the most poorly written books I've ever read and this is surprising because I thought "A Brother's Jorney" was well written. This book on the other hand is just incredibly rambling, vague, repetitious and disjointed.
There is really not much to it.
R.Pelzer gets involved with drugs. His mother can't bash him cause he's six foot tall but she continues her emotional abuse. Pelzer befriends some nice people and hides his drug abuse from them.
The rest of the 200 pages is endless vauge agonised rambling about how bad he felt about hiding drug abuse from the nice people. There is really not much more to the book than that.
Two stars instead of one for one evocative description of a drug trip and because I feel bad for him. First he was exploited by his mother and now it's his editor and publishers.
A Brother's Journey showed he had potential as a writer. Then he got forced in to tossing out this garbage.
No one bothered to edit this book. They knew people would rush out to buy it and so will you, despite this review.
But you'd be better off spending your money on "The Priviledge of Youth.
The only truly uplifting Pelzer book is "A Man Named Dave."

For every woman who has ever wondered what the women were doing while generals fought battles and kings beheaded their enemies (and for every man who hasn't), this book is for you. Originally published as The Women's History of the World, this reissue comes complete with Rosalind Miles's wry wit and disarming puns on everything from the phallus to bride sales, a very necessary comic relief to the recounting of centuries of abuse and oppression. Miles's engaging story starts with the first woman and her contribution of the essential human gene imprint, and the great evolutionary leap made by the development of monthly menstruation (rather than occasional heat). From the very beginning, women played a central role in human evolvement, from their critical part in sustaining early tribes with their food gathering (hunting brought marginal food contributions) to the impetus for developing the first technologies--sticks for digging and slings for carrying babies. In fact, the first God and the first priest-poet were female. Miles gives a relishing description of the Great Goddess Mother and her worshipers, poets, priests, queens, lovers, athletes, and soldiers who had not yet been told that they were physically weak, emotionally unstable, or intellectually inferior.

The history of women is, of necessity, also the history of men, and Miles claims the turning point for the former came when the latter finally got the great Aha!--the realization that sperm was essential for fertilization and that men weren't as superfluous to procreation as previously believed. What follows is not only the story of the attack on women's bodies and repression of their lives, but of women who found ways to subvert and convert the power of men. Examples of active, courageous, and inspiring women abound, from women warriors in Islam to the woman doctor who opened the first birth control clinic. Miles also reveals the barbaric truths behind euphemisms like chastity belt and child bride, and the truly impressive strength of such heroines as Florence Nightingale, who was nicknamed "the lady with the hammer" for attacking a locked storeroom when she needed nursing supplies, and Harriet "General" Tubman, who not only smuggled black slaves to freedom but commanded an action during the Civil War that liberated more than 750 blacks. This is a bracing, disturbing, and always lively read and proves definitively that in history there were always women, too. --Lesley Reed

                Book Description

Men dominate history because men write history. There have been many heroes, but no heroines. This is the book that overturns that "phallusy of history," giving voice to the true history of the world — which, always and forever, must include the contributions of millions of unsung women. Here is the history you never learned — but should have!

Without politics or polemics, this brilliant and witty book overturns centuries of preconceptions to restore women to their rightful place at the center of culture, revolution, empire, war, and peace. Spiced with tales of individual women who have shaped civilization, celebrating the work and lives of women around the world, distinguished by a wealth of research, Who Cooked the Last Supper? redefines our concept of historical reality.

1 out of 5 stars I'd like to be kind, but ... .......2006-01-02

I bought it expecting a "history" book. Instead, I got a compilation of anecdotes and generalizations told in chronological order. I consider this book to be a polemic on women's issues, an angry feminist history, rather than any kind of scholarly or even exploratory work in history. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Historians today are looking at how women have been able to contribute to their respective societies even in oppressive conditions. The author is still male bashing and playing sexual politics. (Miles is primarily a writer of popular feminist historical novels.)

Yes, there was a tidbit or two that was new, (the first and second chapters were pretty good) but when I checked the notes there were precious few primary sources or even secondary source histories; women's studies and sociology texts constituted the bulk of resource materials. Even the bibliography is skewed toward the "women's studies" department rather than history and there were certainly far more works mentioned than apparently used. No wonder the title was changed - it's not a history book. And it certainly is popular with women's studies classes. Perhaps the "old" title (which was changed for good reason) indicated that this is a "women's history," in the sense that it's told from a woman's perspective - not an historian's.

I appreciate that the history of women needs more examination and that it cannot be done in the same "just the facts, ma'am" manner of the old political, economic and military histories. I appreciate that it's books like Miles' ("history from below" with somewhat more emphasis on generalizations than the pre-revisionists would like) which contribute to historiography of women's history in that they can give creative direction to historians. But with this book, women are just continuing to receive the same appalling treatment that has so often been their plight. Women's history is being given short shrift indeed, and women deserve more attention, more respect and more validity. This book doesn't change a thing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book (Lousy Title)!.......2005-07-26

I almost didn't buy this book because of the title since I'm not into cooking or religion. But I am so glad I did buy it. I have read many, many books on women's history over the years, and I have to say this is by far the best! (Another great women's history book is "The Ladies of Seneca Falls.") The author writes in plain language and educates the reader on the lives of women from biblical times to the present. She not only shows how women have been persecuted in every country and in every era, but also shows how women have stayed strong and persevered. She portrays women not as victims, but also shows their strengths and accomplishments. This book should be required reading in our schools so that girls can acquire a better sense of what is important in life and be proud of their foremothers and their own history. And men should read this book also so they can hopefully have more respect for women!

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Point of View!!.......2005-03-19

Rosalind's book is a beautiful combination of history, archeology and storytelling that recreates womens history. I especially loved the goddess chapter. She has a wonderful archeological and scientific perspective while still presenting the material in an intersting and entertaining fashion. This book is on my favorites list!

I am a math instructor, and hate proofs even more than the students do. However, this book is about the process of formal proof, from a logician's viewpoint. Understanding the structure of the proof process makes the pain tolerable.
The real reason I bought this is an interest in theorem proving software. What seemed a dead end is a useful although limited tool. I need to understand the process better to use the tools.

I write this review on the context of having done all the math required for mechanical engineer but never havin to do proofs... as B.Rusell once said do and the by faith you will believe... trying to escape that state of mind I got this book some years ago, Im glad for the author follows a structure approach similar to learning a programming language, once you master some elemenatry techniques you can stack up to create refined algorithms.

I have the first edition of this excellent book, and I compared it to the recently published second edition. Quite frankly, I can't see why they bothered. It's not like the methods of mathematical proofs change that much over time. We're not talking about some 1400 page shovelware book on being a MCSE/CCNA/etc. where the qualifications change every six months. There are only three basic changes to this book in its second edition:
                1. More exercises that are not that different from the original exercises and not any more helpful.
                2. Solutions to those exercises. This is the only real improvement to the first edition. It is good to finally have solutions to exercises.
                3. An appendix on Proof Designer, which is a Java applet that writes outlines of proofs in elementary set theory, under the guidance of the user. It is designed to help students learn to write proofs, and it has a whole website devoted to its understanding, so I don't see that this appendix adds that much to the conversation.
The content of this book, first and second editions being essentially the same, is excellent. I highly recommend it for any mathematics or computer science student who is enrolled in a class where the correct method of performing a mathematical proof is the primary focus. It is very readable and suitable for self-teaching of the subject. I guess the good news is that now that the second edition is out, students can get the almost identical first edition used and even cheaper than before.

4 out of 5 stars overlay logic on any other type of maths.......2005-10-20

The math notation in this book is that typically of texts used by maths majors. Most of those people should already have a grasp of proving statements. But some do not, and the book is directed to them.

At great length, it goes over various proof strategies. Especially proof by induction and contradiction. There are several types of maths. Essentially, this text shows how a proof involves using logic as an overlay to any other type of maths that you are primarily dealing with.

                    Book Description

Humanity's well being and ultimate survival are inextricably bound up with the health of the natural world. We often take for granted that nature will continue to provide the basics of life--food to eat, water to drink, fuel for warmth, air to breathe. But today the world's natural resources are threatened daily. Forests are leveled, grasslands overgrazed until they turn to desert, oceans and streams polluted. In Nature in Danger, conservation expert Noel Simon offers a detailed picture of the many threats to the natural world, and reveals what we can do to protect the environment from overexploitation. This lavishly illustrated and highly informative volume takes us on a journey to some of the world's most striking climes, from the Okavango Delta to the Tibetan Plateau, and from African savannas to the island of Tristan da Cunha. Simon examines the many varieties of rainforest, from Brazilian Amazonia to the forests of Zaire; wetlands as diverse as the Florida Everglades, the Mekong delta, and the Aral Sea; grasslands from the North American prairies to the Eurasian steppe; mountain ranges from the Rockies and the Andes to the Himalayas and the Alps; reefs and islands such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Galapagos Archipelago, Madagascar, and Hawaii; the world's great deserts; and Antarctica. he describes the flora and fauna of each place he visits, traces the history of human exploitation right up to the present, and outlines ways in which these threats can be met. Each section boasts superb full-color photographs and informative maps. Also included are many boxed features that offer interesting side-trips to a region's natural wonders (such as the shrimp that live some 800 feet above ground on Ayers Rock, in the Australian desert) or historical curiosities (such as how Samarkand in the eighth century became a paper-making center). In addition, the book offers a special section on endangered species, highlighting the perilous circumstances of orangutans, blue whales, the African elephant, the giant panda, and many other animals and plants. Simon describes each species, tells how many remain extant (for instance, he reveals that the African Black rhino has dwindled from 100,000 in the early 1960s to some 4,000 today), and outlines what we are doing to save them. Finally, the book includes a glossary of terms, a directory of species names, a bibliography, and an index. A superb source of information on threatened habitats and species around the world as well as a beautifully illustrated celebration of nature's most glorious locales, Nature in Danger will delight anyone who loves wildlife and the great outdoors or who is deeply concerned about the ecological future of planet Earth.
