For most people, film adaptation of literature can be summed up in one sentence: The movie wasnt as good as the book. This volume undertakes to show the reader that not only is this evaluation not always true but sometimes it is intrinsically unfair. Movies based on literary works, while often billed as adaptations, are more correctly termed translations. A director and his actors translate the story from the written page into a visual presentation. Depending on the form of the original text and the chosen method of translation, certain inherent difficulties and pitfalls are associated with this change of medium. So often our reception of a book-based movie has more to do with our expectations and reading of the literature than with the job that the movie production did or did not do. Avoiding these biases and fairly evaluating any particular literary-based film takes an awareness of certain factors. Written with a formalistic rather than historical approach, this work presents a comprehensive guide to literature-based films, establishing a contextual and theoretical basis to help the reader understand the relationships between such movies and the original texts as well as the readers own individual responses to these productions. To this end, it focuses on recognizing and appreciating the inherent difficulties encountered when basing a film on a literary work, be it a novel, novella, play or short story. Individual chapters deal with the specific issues and difficulties raised by each of these genres, providing an overview backed up by case studies of specific film translations. Films and literary works receiving this treatment include The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Manchurian Candidate (1962), Lady Windemeres Fan by Oscar Wilde and Shakespeares Henry V. Interspersed throughout the text are suggestions for activities the film student or buff can use to enhance his or her appreciation and understanding of the films. This volume also discusses the attributes of effective film translation, considers the rights and responsibilitiesif anyowed to the parent text and explores the theoretical aspects of critical analysis, written or verbal, of such works. Appendices provide an aesthetic rubric; a sample decoupage and storyboard; and a list of Shakespeares plays translated to film. A glossary aids in understanding film and literary terms. 'It does exactly what it says on the tin !'.......2000-04-12

Bruce Quarrie has provided a mine of information for the potential Napoleonic gamer. Starting with an excellent potted history of the wars the book move through strategy and tactics, organisation and then moves in some detail into the worlds of campaigns related topics. Finance, recruitment, hospitals and supply are tackledin amazing detail - ever wondered how much fodder a Hussar suadron got through in a week ? If you did the answer is here and fully explained ! Advice on buying, painting and basing your armies is a little dated in some respects but really only in terms of materials - the advice is still sound. Finally comes a set of very detailed rules so typical of 70s gaming. They are easily adapted and being the 2nd edition of the rules produced in the well know Airfix guide to Napoleonic Wargaming most mechanisms will be familiar to older hands. Overall a unique book in that one really could start from scratch and wargame the Napoleonic wars from this one book. With such a bewildering choice of books on the market today the neophyte Napoleonic gamer would do well to search out this book. I started with it 25 years ago and am still using it in my campaigns today.

It's important for anyone who creates Web sites--even those who rely on powerful editors like Dreamweaver or GoLive--to know HTML. The World Wide Web Consortium rewrote HTML as a subset of XML (dubbing it "XHTML 1.0") and the allowable code will eventually be stricter. Tags that are being phased out are labeled "deprecated"--current browsers can still handle them, but if you want your site to keep up with future browsers, not to mention conform to accessibility requirements, you will want to get on top of XHTML.

Simply the best applies to Natalie and to this bio by Suzanne Finstad. Speaking as a HUGE fan of Miss Wood who has been reading about her since childhood I say without question that this is the best bio written about the legendary star. Finstad takes the reader on a well researched journey through Miss Wood's troubled life. Finstad captures Natalie's vulnerability and at the same time communicates to her reader the strength within Natalie that enabled her to make the best of the cards she was dealt. The best aspect of this book is that unlike some of the other books written about Miss Wood, most notably Gavin Lambert's Natalie:A Life, Finstad had no ulterior motive in writing this book, no agenda, she simply wanted to tell Natalie's story and she did so in a loving, sympathetic yet honest way....If there are any new fans out there out want to read about Natalie, this is the book to read...

This book is good and absorbing, providing a comprehensive view of Natalie's life. I wish that it had gone more in depth about her various films and her experiences making them, but the info about the infamous drowning is quite interesting.

This biography really helps to get to know Natalie's off camera persona, her compulsive personality and her insecurities. A very talented actress, very sweet and proper all the time but with so many internal conflicts. I loved that the author researched her career movements i.e. movies, auditions, co-stars, locations so well including getting testimonies from several people on the same storyline. The author tried to get everyone's point of view, version of the facts which helped us understand Natalies demons. I only wish that the author would have research a little bit more into the secret life of Natalie's husband Wagner (gay?) and also more about the other important people in her life.

Touching but flawed.......2006-11-12

This is a well researched, well detailed,(some might say exhaustive),decently written biography of the life , career ,loves and death of Natalie Wood, who is one of the most beautiful , gifted,legendary actresses in Hollywood history.
The book even reaches far back into Natalie's parents history ,long before she was conceived.
And Finstead certainly has a warm,reverent, affectionate ,respectful feeling and tone towards her subject which is not always present in biographies.
That doesn't mean the book is without its flaws though.Far from it.

Despite the books length,I feel it only skimmed over parts of really fascinating areas of her life like her friendship with James Dean , areas that could have been much more deeply explored while shedding too much light on what I felt were less significant areas of her life by comparison such as people she had a few casual dates with.
The most serious fault of the book is its reporting of unsubstantiated speculation and rumor in the breakup of her first marriage to Robert Wagner.
Instead of making clear that it was speculation and rumor, the book treated it as cold, hard fact.
Another serious flaw of the book is its detailed printing of the Wagners' boat Captain Dennis Davern of the events of the night of Natalie's tragic death.
From what I understand, Dennis Davern has changed his story several times,is not seen as reliable and his motivation is largely financial.
The book basically makes a lot of nasty accusations towards Robert Wagner with almost no proof whatsoever to back them up.
I think thats pretty unfair since he was cleared of any wrong doing by the Police not long after Natalie's drowning and he was the undisputed great love of her life.

Another thing about the book that is annoying is sometimes when she uses quotations its almost impossible to determine who is speaking.
I do give the book credit for shedding a lot of light on important areas of her life that have been somewhat unknown in the past,like her two early intense love affairs that her Mother broke up and her Father's desperately unhappy , frustrated life.

Overall, a nice tribute to Natalie because of the feeling with which it was written but not entirely fair or accurate to some important people in her life

Well Worth The Time.......2006-10-26

In my opinion, this is an excellent biography. I found it well-written, balanced and full of interesting stories. I think it is sad that Ms. Wood probably wanted a Best Actress Oscar above all and never reached her goal. Although one of her nominations was for West Side Story, I believe the fact that she was dubbed in it would be a big drawback, the same way it would have been for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady (Julie Andrews should have been given that role). I also read Gavin Lambert's bio and thought it was a bit strange that no mention was made of substance abuse in this book. I don't think that consuming 7 or 8 drinks in one evening results in a person being "mildly intoxicated". Having said that, the public doesn't have the right to pry into the events leading to her death. I think she will be remembered as a very entertaining actor in comedies and a very moving one in dramas.

As Louisiana and Cuba emerged from slavery in the late nineteenth century, each faced the question of what rights former slaves could claim. Degrees of Freedom compares and contrasts these two societies in which slavery was destroyed by war, and citizenship was redefined through social and political upheaval. Both Louisiana and Cuba were rich in sugar plantations that depended on an enslaved labor force. After abolition, on both sides of the Gulf of Mexico, ordinary people--cane cutters and cigar workers, laundresses and labor organizers--forged alliances to protect and expand the freedoms they had won. But by the beginning of the twentieth century, Louisiana and Cuba diverged sharply in the meanings attributed to race and color in public life, and in the boundaries placed on citizenship.

Louisiana had taken the path of disenfranchisement and state-mandated racial segregation; Cuba had enacted universal manhood suffrage and had seen the emergence of a transracial conception of the nation. What might explain these differences?

Moving through the cane fields, small farms, and cities of Louisiana and Cuba, Rebecca Scott skillfully observes the people, places, legislation, and leadership that shaped how these societies adjusted to the abolition of slavery. The two distinctive worlds also come together, as Cuban exiles take refuge in New Orleans in the 1880s, and black soldiers from Louisiana garrison small towns in eastern Cuba during the 1899 U.S. military occupation.

So much fun and really interesting :-).......2006-02-14

Do you know how stuff works? If not this book is choc-full of information about everything you could think of. How emails work, questions you have about ATM's, and everything in between. He talks about it all using laymans terms, so it's fairly easy to understand. It's full of vibrant pictures as well and is his second book about How Stuff Works (this has made me want to go get the first book). Read this and then go and impress all your friends - they'll think you're even smarter than before. Great book and I highly recommend this.

This is a very informative book and it explains everything so you can understand it. you can learn how everything from video games to an apache helicopter and is great for all ages. It includes detailed illustrations and side panels with extra information. If you have a curious mind you should purchase this book.

Just as good sequel!.......2003-09-11

I bought the first "How Stuff Works" for my son. He is into the hows and whys of almost everything and he enjoyed the book very much. So when he asked for "More How Stuff Works", I got it without hesitation. This second book includes a lot of material that are now part of our everyday life. Even my husband and I found it useful when we had to open my computer to reset a jumper and we found what the jumper looked and where it is in the computer. I encourage adults to read this book, too. It's not full of technical jargon so it's real easy to understand.
