5 out of 5 stars A great accomplishment in the realm of personal narrative........1998-12-18

Full Circle was a powerful work of signifigance. Deeply emotional, the book transcends Jansen's extraordinary battle as a parable of every athlete's struggle for personal developement. McCallum weaves an enduring tale that athlete, sports nut, or soccer mom can internalize to better understand the common struggle manifested by sports. More eloquent even than Shaq Attaq, Full circle is an accomplishment of aesthetics and moral comprehension.

            2 out of 5 stars Very Victorian!.......2001-09-30

This is a book of a Victorian flower garden,it has absolutely nothing to do with x-mas.Most of the designs are of roses and cherubic children, there are also some violets and butterflies and a couple of fairy flowers. The layout of the book is very good, the charts are in color and very well defined; but I personally found the designs too old- fashioned and I did not like the colors used in the patterns very much.

5 out of 5 stars A good book if you like flowers.......2000-02-25

It's quite deceiving that the title says "christmas remembered" because when I opened it up it had nothing to do with Christmas at all.... at least it was not something that I could see. But I was still pleased with what I have because the book contains cross stitches of mainly roses and some other flowers as well. So if you like flowers this is quite a good buy. I also found in useful in that I didn't have to use the whole design. I could pick out small parts of it and use it in a different way. (Like I took the butterfly design out of one page and stitched it next to someone's initials, with the butterfly perching on top.) Hope this helps, feel free to e-mail me if you would like to know more. I always find it hard to buy a book without knowing what's inside. Happy book hunting!

5 out of 5 stars Most beautiful book seen in 40 yrs. of cross-stitching!.......1998-01-14

Gorgeously photographed; beautifully printed; clear, concise patterns and directions. A lovely book even for those who do not stitch. Currently priced at 24.95 that is a little steep. Under 15.00 would probably make this a run-a-way best seller.

                  Book Description

Photoshop Elements 4 One-on-One marks a landmark in computer publishing. In addition to offering 12 lessons of project-based tutorials with all sample files included, each lesson starts with a video introduction, hosted by the author himself, Deke McClelland. And these are no ordinary videos. Produced by Adobe's official video training partner, Total Training, each video measures 960 by 540 pixels and plays at 30 frames per second, with no interlacing. That's a play rate of 15.5 million pixels per second, making this the first computer publication to include high-definition video, playable on any modern PC with a DVD-ROM drive. The picture is so crystal clear, it's like watching the world-reknowned expert work right along with you.

In addition to the video -- all new recordings created exclusively for this title -- the book has been completely revamped for Photoshop Elements 4. Inside the full-color pages are new exercises devoted to color-correcting skin tones, auto-tagging images with faces, isolating foreground subjects, extracting people and objects from their backgrounds, creating custom slide shows, correcting red-eye, and sharing images online. Every bit as wildly ambitious and brass-tacks practical as the best-selling image editor itself, Photoshop Elements 4 One-on-One will have you gasping with amazement at your own creations. Deke puts the magic of digital imaging squarely where it belongs -- in your hands.

THIS PRODUCT WAS EASY TO FOLLOW IT WAS VERY HELPFUL. YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR TIME GO SLOW. WATCH THE VIDEO, READ THE BOOK AND THEN DO THE PROJECTS. DO THIS WITH EVERY CHAPTER.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Tutorial.......2007-01-10

Although Deke breezes through his video mighty fast, he does acquaint you with the many possibilities that Photoshop has to offer. If you then see something you wish to pursue, you can retrieve it at your own pace.

3 out of 5 stars Good Introduction But...........2007-01-10

The book is well written and organized. However, the step by step approach does not allow for a good understanding of the tools, etc. that one is using. There are still so many questions I have when I work on photos. It also needs a much more in depth review and instruction of restoring old photographs. The section on color was very good and I liked it the best. Since I have a Mac, the first lesson is worthless. The Bridge application that ships with the Mac version is very different and quite sophisticated since it is part of the fuller versions of Photoshop. It all added to the learning curve. On the whole, it is an excellent book to get started. Now I wish I could find a book that explains Elements so I can learn to use the program to its fullest.

2 out of 5 stars photoshop elements 4.......2007-01-09

this book is not at all conversent for Mac In talking with the editors they are not going to have an edition that is Feel that more explanation should be given as why to make changes in the color correction areas would not recommend for the novice Mac user 2 stars for the Mac user

The Sailor's Classics library introduces a new generation of readers to the best books ever written about small boats under sail

Below the Cape of Good Hope and south of Australia lie the feared latitudes of the "Roaring Forties," where nonstop westerly gales push huge seas, unimpeded, around and around the bottom of the world. It was into this watery hell that, in 1942, Vito Dumas set sail in a 31-foot ketch.

The story of the adventure of sailing in such conditions is well worth reading. As an added value Vito just seems to have a great capacity for making friends and telling the story. His capacity to endure is remarkable, but also his skills and seamanship are truly outstanding. Even in this modern world of computers and electronic navigational aids there is much to be learned about boats and seamanship from a person who sailed a 32' boat in the worst of conditions, and did it smartly, without all those modern aids. I recommend this book for the wonderful story it tells about the sea and the person. Certainly a classic of solo sailing stories.

                    5 out of 5 stars A true classic.......2003-09-09

Surely Dumas must be one of the most charming of all sailors.
His account of circling the world the hard way
is modest, intimate, and filled with love and joy.
If you want to know what it means to love the sea
and to sail the world alone in a small boat,
you must read these three authors:
                    Slocum, Guzzwell, and Dumas.

                    5 out of 5 stars Definitely a classic.......2003-05-06

This is currently my favorite book I have ever read about sailing around the world. It's entertaining, informatative, and most important, I felt like I was right there riding with him on the boat.

It struck me as a very honest account without a lot of making things sound more impressive than they actually are. He talks a bit about getting sick on board, but he accepts that as just part of the challenge. He also talks about getting a tiny bit careless after going so far around the world, and getting put ashore in what must have appeared to be a "novice" mistake. At that point, he was ANYTHING but a novice. It's just the kind of thing that might happen to any one of us, which is exactly what makes this book so appealing to me.

If you want to escape from your land-locked life for a few hours with a good book, consider this one strongly. The chapters are generally fairly short, and the pages turn quickly, because he really draws you in with his writing style. His description of his experience with the waves in the South Pacific still has me spellbound.

I will read this book again and again over the years.

An Argentine legend of the sea, deeply loved by all south american sailors. This book tells of his second voyage on board Legh II against the roaring forties alone, and all the things he had to endure. Bernard Moitissier used to keep this book under his pillow and referred to it many times. A must read for everyone, specially for overseas cruisers

I normally enjoy Kreeft, and there are some merits to this book. His essay about whether the moral code can be abolished at all is very interesting.

That said, I got a book full of "Brave New World is upon us!" I don't disagree with that point, but I was hoping for more on "The Abolition of Man". If you're really looking for someone to tell you that the Brave New World is here, read this book, otherwise, get something else.

5 out of 5 stars Tonic for our times.......2005-06-05

This book is a treat. One of the great Christian apologists, writers and thinkers of the last century is discussed by one of the best of this century. Peter Kreeft, Professor of Philosophy at Boston College, here gives us an introduction to the thought and influence of the great Oxford don.

Both authors are known for their clarity of mind, their prolific literary output, and their commitment to the truths of historic Christianity. And both authors have been known as fearless warriors against the prevailing secularism and relativism of our culture.

Indeed, a major target of Lewis's pen was modernism and all that it entails. The rejection of the sacred and the elevation of the secular was a defining feature of modernism. It meant the exaltation of human reason and the rejection of non-human revelation. Autonomous man, guided only by intellect, could usher in a perfect world, accompanied by science and technology. Such a utopian quest was doomed to failure of course, and many of Lewis's works were directed at this theme.

The Abolition of Man was a classic volume in this regard. So too was the third volume of his space trilogy, That Hideous Strength. The naïve and baseless belief of modernism that fallen reason, aided and abetted by science (really scientism), could create a new man and an earthly paradise has been the cause of more human misery and death than any other worldview.

The Judeo-Christian worldview, which gave rise to Western civilisation, has been repudiated, resulting in a host of heresies that beguile modern man. Kreeft lists twenty "isms" that Lewis waged war against, all the products of the modernist rejection of it transcendent roots. These include subjectivism, cultural relativism, utilitarianism, pragmatism, cynicism, hedonism, and secularism.

These destructive isms plaguing the West today are part of a much bigger sweep of history. Lewis argued that the history of Western civilisation has been characterised by two monumental spiritual revolutions, the first from pre-Christian to Christian, the second from Christian to post-Christian.

He argued that the second revolution was more radical than the first, just "as divorce is more traumatic than marriage". The second change is happening quicker and is more destabilising. As a result, the soul of Western civilisation is dying. The real question is how long and how deep this second revolution will run.

The first revolution however is the permanent one. It may appear to have been eclipsed for now, but our vantage point is limited. True, the new dark ages may continue for quite sometime. Writing six years before the new millennium, Kreeft could argue that we have two options: "Either we will build Gothic cathedrals again, from a restored faith, or we will build the Tower of Babel again, from a restored apostasy".

As a prophetic figure, Lewis could clearly see the stark choice facing the West. He knew that if we rejected the right choice, many more horrors would await us. But if we choose wisely, the new dawn will soon arise.

The six meaty essays in this book offer the way out of the spiritual, cultural and intellectual morass we find ourselves in. The prophetic vision and insight of Lewis needs to be captured again by a new generation. And this book is an ideal means by which that can happen.

I have read most of C. S. Lewis's works. I have read some Kreeft before and I enjoyed his writings. However, these essays are boring. I could not get through them. The essays have very little to do with what Lewis thought and a lot to do with what Kreeft thinks about. What's more after the first essay, I could care less what Kreeft thinks about. I would suggest that you reread "Abolition of Man" again and save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Eclipse of the First Things.......2003-07-18

"Can the natural law ever be abolished from the heart of man?" Prof. Kreeft presents both sides of the argument, pitting Aquinas ("no") against C.S. Lewis ("yes").

I think it is a "loose" argument. Lewis in The Abolition of Man says there will be no men left. Natural law ceases to be because man ceases to be. Does that mean that Lewis' position is correct - that the natural law can be abolished? Well, one might argue that if man himself ceases to be a moral agent, he is no longer truly human.

Kreeft holds out the hope that Aquinas is correct, that man will awaken to his danger.

But, in this polity, a society where people decide how to order their lives together, we are facing a powerful tyranny of thought that has granted unto itself the obligation of making those decisions. That power asserts that the belief of "an ethic or morality that transcends human invention" is a "religious" notion - and that religion can play no part - indeed, must not be permitted to play a part - in the life of the polity.

This tyranny of thought is found in the judicial chambers of our government, in the US Supreme Court and its circuit courts. Surely, the reasoning behind many Court decisions over the past 50 years can be found in the list of 20 "heresies" Prof. Kreeft supplies.

This book is a very "uncomfortable" work - reading it, one should be concerned about the erosion of the polity, should be unhappy about it, should be ready to do something about it. That list of 20 failed philosophies is the most important and valuable part of this work, and possibly the most uncomfortable aspect of it: I am sure the reader would recognize many of his or her own personal beliefs (and those that have been presented to him or her in school or church) described somewhere in that list.

We don't stone prophets anymore - the Court just rules them inadmissible.

The occasional good or interesting idea manages to escape from a confused sea of mannered verbiage. This is the written essence of talk radio. The writer seems more intent on giving paternalistic viewpoints in annoyingly cute expressions than explaining. A poor choice for an intelligent person. Rather than look at ideas, set them down, weigh them, and discuss methodically, this book rants. Would make good bird-cage flooring, however, and may be commended for that. The subject matter of the book is of great concern; the treatment, however, is for the mass consumption of the fear prone. I want my money back. The book should be called Kreeft for the Third Millenium, but then, who would buy it.

How is vivisection related to Stonehenge? It might take a few leaps of history, but you'll find the answer in The Knowledge Web, another of science historian James Burke's compelling collections of circular narratives that have informed and inspired astute readers for years. Best known for his outstanding documentary series Connections, Burke has a genius for unraveling complex threads of history and sharing with us the remarkable coincidences and contingencies that built our modern world. In The Knowledge Web he shows us how the rapid flow of information engenders greater possibilities for the kinds of chance meetings that drive progress.

Burke uses a very neat trick that both demonstrates the potential of hypertext and makes a more pleasurable reading experience. When mentioning certain key figures or events, he includes a footnote that points the reader not to the bottom of the page or the end of the book, but to another point in the text where the figure or event comes into play again. Many other writers would find this impossible to pull off, but Burke's style is perfectly suited for these jumps; if anything, his major theme of interconnectedness is driven home in a fresh new way. Whether or not you're a fan of Burke's unique style, The Knowledge Web will delight and amaze you with its visions of the delicacy of history and the many paths the past must take to reach the future. --Rob Lightner

                              Book Description

In The Knowledge Web, James Burke, the bestselling author and host of television's Connections series, takes us on a fascinating tour through the interlocking threads of knowledge running through Western history. Displaying mesmerizing flights of fancy, he shows how seemingly unrelated ideas and innovations bounce off one another, spinning a vast, interactive web on which everything is connected to everything else: Carmen leads to the theory of relativity, champagne bottling links to wallpaper design, Joan of Arc connects through vaudeville to Buffalo Bill.

Illustrating his open, connective theme in the form of a journey across a web, Burke breaks down complex concepts, offering information in a manner accessible to anybody -- high school graduates and Ph.D. holders alike. The journey touches almost two hundred interlinked points in the history of knowledge, ultimately ending where it begins.

At once amusing and instructing, The Knowledge Web heightens our awareness of our interdependence -- with one another and with the past. Only by understanding the interrelated nature of the modern world can we hope to identify complex patterns of change and direct the process of innovation to the common good.

There is no narrative purpose to this book. My mind was given its most powerful jolt of whiplash starting with chapter 4. This chapter starts with an explanation of black holes, THREE pages later we have a short history of the Pony Express, THREE pages later we deal with Joan of Arc. By the way, chapter 5 starts with instant coffee. I now have a headache.

4 out of 5 stars Good if you can't get enough of Burke.......2001-07-06

I admit it, I am a big fan of James Burke. Ever since the fascinating BBC series, "Connections" I have been an avid reader of history. Most interesting to me is Burke's over-arching thesis regarding the role of technology in shaping history. I have gladly added this to my collection of Burke's works. However, I found the method of presentation, which amounts to an attempt to turn the work into a sort of hypertext, gimmicky and distracting. I gave up on trying to dart back and forth among the various interconnected sections. Perhaps, in a few years, I may find this device useful for some purpose, but I cannot see how it is any sort of advance over a standard index.

Nonetheless, I recommend this to anyone with an interest in history and technology. Burke simplifies and makes intriguing the progress of human technology, and its role in the progress of humanity itself, in a way that is fun and engaging to read. This book made me go back and re-read old history texts with a new outlook. As far as Burke's books go, however, I recommend _The Pinball Effect_ more highly as the device does not distract as much from the content. I eagerly await his next television series. I do so hope one is in the offing. hint, hint, Professor Burke!

                              4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!.......2000-09-09

Very 'browsable' little book. If you like Burke's TV programmes (notice the hoity toity British spelling) and don't mind his hurried non-sequitur transitions form one topic to another- then you'll enjoy this book. The Knowledge Web is so jam-packed with facts and anecdotes that you'll be able to annoy friends and dinner companions for fortnights (I can't stop) to come with little gems of knowledge.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading Title, Blurb, Introduction, Etc........2000-07-31

This book was a sorry disappointment. I will preface my further remarks by saying that I am a huge fan of Mr. Burke's television productions, and (ironically) I actually enjoyed the book a great deal, but for mostly all the wrong reasons.

The fact is that the book does not deal with what is alluded to by the title, the jacket copy, or the author's introduction. Unfortunately, those were the only elements that I scanned when looking over the book in the store (and then buying it online ;-). The marketting blurb on the cover says "From electronic agents to Stonehenge and back...". Well, there was a very small bit about electronic agents and believe it or not, Stonehenge wasn't mentioned once throughout the entire book. Mr. Burke was not well served here by his market driven editors.

The only reason I still enjoyed the book is that I love both history and technology, and that's the terrain through which this addled account rambles. Regrettably, this book was more like an extended outpouring of jumbled, loosely 'connected' trivia from a hyper-loquacious Alzheimer's patient, than anything truly salient or purposeful. There was absolutely no discernible point to the narrative. The author's attempt to put the work into some kind of prosaic hyperlink format was a bit embarrassing as well. Lastly, the book ended abruptly and arbitrarily, almost as if Mr. Burke's nurse had come in and said "That's all for today. It's time for Mr. Burke's evening feeding. Maybe you can come back tomorrow." I hope not.

4 out of 5 stars Stimulates Your Mind.......2000-05-29

This is almost like a technological "Ulysses" by James Joyce. The author almost does a stream of consciousness, and does repeat himself at least three or four times through the 262 page book. It is a journey that reminds me of Andy Grove's book on change, as you see how inventions, technology, greatly influenced history and the advance of our knowledge. Most importantly, it shows how new things can make people a lot of money, those that don't change, lose a lot of money, and is fascinating---although the connections of events wanders from century to century and subject to subject. I thought this was not only fascinating, but there are many levels in the writing just as there are in James Joyce's fiction. This book is pure fact, however.
