          Book Description

Performing Democracy explores aspects of a developing form of performance that works to change social conditions for marginalized groups or to preserve the traditions and cohesion of the community. The book combines critical analysis with field reports on specific projects and productions to explore the issues that confront community-based performance. The range of topics is impressive, and includes performances in North America, Australia, the Middle East, Bosnia, Taiwan, Korea, England, and the Netherlands. Many articles include production photos.
The book's first section focuses on how performance can contribute to the definition, creation, and preservation of community. Next, contributors address issues of authority within the production of community-based performance. A final section considers community-based performance's efforts to encourage individuals to feel empowered in everyday life and in their relation to government.
The range of performance genres covered includes community history plays, agitprop, forum theater workshops, puppetry, avant-garde plays, dance, and oral epics. The projects involve many different kinds of communities, including the inner city, youth, seniors, ethnic groups, activists, gays and lesbians, immigrants, and prison inmates.

4 out of 5 stars How theater arts can heal trauma and drive political action.......2001-10-04

One of the 23 contributions by different theater activists is a chanpter on "Yuyachkani" (one word translated as meaning, in Peruvian language of Quechua, "I am thinking, I am remembering, I am your thought"). The "Yuyachkani" chapter, an example of this superb book, is about a Peruvian street theater group that has performed together in cities and rural villages since the early 1970s. Contributor Diana Taylor writes of the power of the arts for healing trauma in Peru, but the words speak to us today, after Sept. 11:

"Yuyachkani's performances make visible a history of cumulative trauma, an unmarked and unacknowledge history of violent conflict. As in Adios Ayacucho, the attempts at communicating an event that no one cares to acknowledge need to be repeated again and again. Part of the reiteration stems from the traumatic nature of injury. Cathy Caruth argues that the obsessive repeats occur because `the event is not assimilated or experienced fully at the time, but only belatedly, in its repeated possession of the one who experiences it. To be traumatized is precisely to be possessed by an image or event." The same, Caruth's proposes, occurs with historical understanding: "For history to be a history of trauma means that it is referential precisely to the extent that it is not fully perceived as it occurs." Trauma produces dislocation, a rupture between the experience and the possibility of understanding it. But trauma, as Caruth's notes, "opens up and challenges us to a new kind of listening, the witnessing, precisely, of impossibility."

"For members of traumatized communities, such as the Andean ones Yuuachkani engages with, past violence blends into the current crisis. The trauma of the persecuted and deracinated indigeneous and mestizo population is a "symptom of history," as Caruth puts it: "The traumatized, we might say, carry an impossible history within them, or they become themselves the symptom of a history that they cannot entirely possess."

(I rate it a 4 not a 5 only because most of the contributions are written for academia and therefore not always clear communications for non-academics)

The author, a self described "professional gambler", simply doesn't understand the game of video poker. While he jokes about being a high school dropout with "street smarts", he unfortunately doesn't understand anything about probability theory or the expected value of return calcultions required to optimize the return on what potentially can be one of the few potentially profitable casino games. In short, his advise on how to play video poker contain many mathemetical errors if optimizing return is your goal.

First he starts by telling you should play table blackjack instead, but if you are too timid to try to learn blackjack, you can minimize your losses by playing video poker his way. He doesn't seem to understand certain video poker games are positive expectation games (unlike blackjack, unless you can track the cards). His advice will quickly turn a positive expectation game (e.g., Duces Wild has a 100.7% expected payback if played flawlessly) into a negative one. One glaring example of his ignorance is "play the minimum for awhile until you see how he machine is paying". The fact is the greatest expected return is achieved by always playing max coins. He doesn't seem to understand each hand is a completely independent event from the prior hand. Some of the hands he says to "hold" are just wrong.

Parting shot: if the author is such as clever professional gambler why does he need to write books like this to make money?

          3 out of 5 stars May be a challenge for a beginner.......2007-08-31

I think this is a book you would use as a reference for getting deeper into the understanding of concepts and being aware of the options for configuration and implemention of various aspects of the framework. But you would need to already understand the basics of Spring.

If you want a Spring tutorial that will help you start building Spring applications from basic concepts, especially if you are a beginner, you may struggle with this book. You get explanation of concepts and code snippets, but you may need to read other books and online articles that are written more in a tutorial style.

          4 out of 5 stars Can't really say.......2007-08-24

I lent it to a guy on my development team, and now I can't seem to get it back. He must like it. (!)

One thing I really appreciated was the comparative tables showing benefits and tradeoffs of using the different web frameworks with Spring. The book does seem a bit shallow for the number of topics presented -- should have been a couple thousand pages to cover everything I'd like to know.

1 out of 5 stars Wasted my time.......2007-08-20

Very incomplete information and examples, the missing pieces being crucial. Overall, poorly and inaccurately written. The authors jump into details before giving the reader the context into which the details should fit. The examples are three-line snippets that fail miserable in showing how to put all the pieces together. Lots of features covered in very short sections that never explain how to use the framework to build a system from beginning to end. Only confused me and wasted my time. I'm at the point of giving up on Spring.

          1 out of 5 stars A waste of treeware.......2007-03-02

This book is TERRIBLE! Almost as bad as the Spring manual itself which doesn't surprise me because it was written by the same people.

Some examples give good detail but they are VERY hard to follow. For most things that I want to do, there is little or no examples.

For example, there is no mention of Acegi taglibs.

If you want a better book, try the Manning "Spring In Action" book. I have that one too and it is much, much better.

5 out of 5 stars Reference guide for Spring users........2007-02-15

If you are developing with Spring Framework you should buy this book and keep it handy by your desk, as it is a deep complement for the reference manual.

This is an excellent book by Rod Johnson and some people at the core team who developed Spring, the excellent tool set for Java distributed applications. Even I have been developing many different sorts of programs and with a wide set of tools and languages for over 30 years, every time I reread any paragraph of this book, I learn a bit more.

If you want to learn what Spring is or if you are considering using it, then you should probably first read "Spring in Action" by Craig Walls and Ryan Breidenbach (Manning ed.) which as a recipies book helps introduce Spring concepts by example, or read "Pro Spring" by Rob Harrop and Jan Machacek (Apress ed.) which goes a bit slower with concepts and examples.

Her classroom was the last stop for a group of troubled kids. Teacher LouAnne Johnson, the petite ex-Marine of Dangerous Minds, was their last chance. But not in LouAnne Johnson's class.Risking her life, and her heart, LouAnne cajoled, bribed, and loved these teens. She went out on tough urban streets to track down Simoa, she faced a dangerously angry father to get pretty, talented Araceli into art school, and she fought drug pushers, trouble-making dropouts, and burned-out teachers to leave her kids alone. Her goal was to get her kids to graduation. Her method? Believe in them....until they believed in themselves.

I've worked in high schools for the past several years, and now am trying to get a job as a teacher. This book will be on my shelf to assist me with dealing with my class. Her methods are great! Too many teachers are so uptight that they are the cause of their own classroom problems. This author shows that great results can be had with compassion, a sprinkle of humor and a true love of her students.

5 out of 5 stars Feel the LOVE!.......2006-01-17

What a wonderful book, for teachers, students, parents, anyone who might need to be reminded of how much we have to give, if we just "will". The author shows her love for her students in every passage, and it was well written, witty, and a wonderful read.

Highly recommended as an entertaining, and insightful, book on teaching children who need love desperately.

          5 out of 5 stars Fine Teaching.......2002-03-15

I had the wonderful chance of reading this book. This book made me laugh and cry and jump in suspense. Ms. Johnson is a wonderful teacher who deserves awards beyong awards. The book taught me to see other parts of education. I really enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to anyone who is going into the education field

          5 out of 5 stars I can relate!.......2001-12-09

This should be required reading for every education major. I teach in an urban school; Ms. Johnson had something some of my young colleagues who quit teaching after a year do not have--resolve, persistance, and determination. There are no "bad" kids, there are kids who do "bad" things or come from "bad" environments, but as Ms. Johnson writes, it is possible to save the kids by giving a lot of ourselves.

4 out of 5 stars How can she bear such a heart pain?.......2001-02-21

I'm also an English teacher who have been teaching teen-agers for 10 years. Teaching teenagers is hard work, very stressful, depressed by themselves and the surrounding of them. I don't have such energy of love to my students as Louanne Johnson. But I can feel her pain in heart because I myself love my students. They are devils and angels at the same time. If they were devils, I could ignore them. If they were angels, I could just smile, do nothing, and just ignore them. But they are irresistable.

I agree with Hal, her master teacher. He said to her, "Teenagers are supposed to be ungrateful little brutes. They're supposed to trample your tender feelings, break your heart. It's their job." He is always right. I wish he would be with me!!!

          Book Description

Surveying a broad landscape through a narrow lens, 1215 sweeps readers back eight centuries in an absorbing portrait of life during a time of global upheaval, the ripples of which can still be felt today. At the center of this fascinating period is the document that has become the root of modern freedom: the Magna Carta. It was a time of political revolution and domestic change that saw the Crusades, Richard the Lionheart, King John, and -- in legend -- Robin Hood all make their marks on history.

The events leading up to King John's setting his seal to the famous document at Runnymede in June 1215 form this rich and riveting narrative that vividly describes everyday life from castle to countryside, from school to church, and from hunting in the forest to trial by ordeal. For instance, women wore no underwear (though men did), the average temperatures were actually higher than they are now, and the austere kitchen at Westminster Abbey allowed each monk two pounds of meat and a gallon of ale per day. Broad in scope and rich in detail, 1215 ingeniously illuminates what may have been the most important year of our history.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to the greatest of centuries.......2007-07-03

This is a very absorbing account of life in the 13th Century. What I like especially is that the authors avoid the usual clichés of other popular historians.
Most readers won't need Danziger and Gillingham to remind them that medieval people did not believe the Earth was flat. That canard was probably started by Washington Irving. But how many know that the people of the day were not as deeply religious as they are normally depicted. Some were atheists!
The authors also show that there was actually some logic in legal procedures which today seem barbaric. For instance, as there was no system of law courts open to all, what better way of establishing right than a trial by combat? Most people came to an agreement long before they had to fight!
After reading the book you will have a greater respect for the people of the time and won't fall for the usual stereotypes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent short history.......2007-05-11

I learnt more about the History of Britain, Ireland and Northern Europe form this book than from all my school history lessons combined. This book is a relatively easy and entertaining read which also debunks and demystifies some of the legends around the Magna Carta, King John I and the much loved Richard Lionheart. Painting a picture of medieval western society and explaining how many of our modern day institutions, superstitions and life were forged in the past. Recommended as essential reading for all screenwriters, to ensure some authenticity in their future endeavours.

3 out of 5 stars INTERESTING.. BUT ULTIMATELY A BIT DISAPPOINTING.......2007-03-31

as the books title makes clear, this is more about the YEAR 1215 and incidentally it also happens to be the year the Magna Carta came into existence

a lot of intersting history, at times you wonder what it has to do with the MC... i was looking for a book that would explore each of the clauses of the MC, or at least a lot more than this book does... the entire document is presented at the end of the book but what i was interested in is what was going on before each clause, and how did things change after.. i wanted to know more about the document, and off course the historical figures behind the who, what, when, where and why... but we get more of the who's, the when's and where's but not much of the what and why...

anyways, enjoy... but you may want to seek out something else if you want to learn about the nuts and bolts of the MC

3 out of 5 stars Some interesting parts, but overall lacks depth.......2007-02-19

I was excited to read 1215, but ended up disappointed by it. It sets out to describe life in England before and after the signing of the Magna Carta. It also has a section with all the provisions in the MC. Some parts were fascinating while others were dull and left me pushing to get through them. I also agree with another review I read here that there isn't enough depth to their history. Too many people and events are glossed over. The authors chose a very complex subject and tried to cram it all into a short, readable book. This was a tumultuous time in English history but this book didn't do enough to take you there.

5 out of 5 stars Great background for reading medieval historical books.......2006-10-13

Great information on the life and times of medieval culture. Informative when reading other historical books of the time period (including Alison Weir books: Eleanor of Aquitaine, The Life of Elizabeth I, Queen Isabella: Treachery, Adultery, and Murder in Medieval England, The Six Wives of Henry VIII, The Children of Henry VIII)

1 out of 5 stars Not for the homebrewer.......2005-09-29

While jam-packed with technical brewing-related information on the molecular level, the book is virtually useless to the amateur brewer seeking to improve his or her beer. I did not expect instant enlightenment, but I did hope to glean some knowledge of water chemistry, hop utilization, etc. Unfortunately, I am brewing beer, not conducting experiments in a well-equipped laboratory. The prose is somewhat dry and reads like a post-graduate-level lecture. Definitely a chemistry text, and not a brewing text.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent technical coverage.......2003-08-03

This is a fairly technical discussion of the subject of brewing chemistry. It's probably more than your typical home-brewer will want to get into, but if you've got some biochem background, or have read Dr. Lee Janson's Brew Chem 101 book and are looking to read on from there, (or you're a very masochistic home-brewer :-)) this would be the next step to take. It does require a greater knowledge of biochemistry and some math (not too surprising, since Dr. Fix had a Ph.D. in math from Harvard). I note the problems with the citations another reviewer here mentioned, who said Dr. Fix refers to his own work and his other book too often, but I didn't mind that too much. Dr. Fix was certainly a competent professional in both math and brewing chemistry, and he did much important work on his own. The important thing is that this book helps to bridge the gap between the professional manuals of industrial microbiology and brewing chemistry and the professional literature. After completing this book, if you want more information, you'll have to go there, such as:

            1. Beer and Wine Production: Analysis, Characterization, and Technological Advances (ACS Symposium, No. 536)

            2. Biotechnology of Malting and Brewing by James S. Hough

            3. Malting and Brewing Science: Hopped Wort and Beer (Volume 2) by D. E. Briggs, et al

            4. Brewing Microbiology by Iain Campbell

            5. Methods of Analysis of the American Society of Brewing Chemists, by the American Society Of Brewing Chemists

            6. Malting and Brewing Science : Volume 1 (#Y0343)
by Dennis Edward Briggs, James S. Hough

            7. Brewing Yeast and Fermentation by Chris Boulton, David Quain

Except for the Brewing Microbiology book by Campbell, all of the above are big, expensive professional volumes, but they represent some of the best technical titles out there.

The book also has a nice introduction summarizing some of the important developments of the last 20 years that have made great improvements in beer, such as the use of modern double pre-evacuation bottle filters to cut down on cold-side oxygenation, the awareness of the staling effects of unsaturated long-chain aldehydes, the realization that hot-side aeration could contribute to this, and the importance of malting and non-enzymatic browning also in this process. These were all important developments that led to the modern low-oxygen brewhouse.

So overall, a very fine discussion of all these issues, and I'd actually give the book 4.5 stars if I could.

2 out of 5 stars Written for the Ph.D Chemistry Major.......2003-06-13

I do not know who this book was written for but it was not the homebrewer. It reads like it was written for the head chemist at Budweiser or a graduate school chemistry course. If you didn't major in chemistry or have been out of school a few years, it reads like a textbook. There is some interesting information in the book but you have to dig it out. Unless you really want to get very technical about the chemical changes during the brewing process, this book has little use for the average brewer.

2 out of 5 stars This book should be an appendix for An Analysis of Brewing.......2001-11-04

Principles of Brewing Science deals with the biology and chemistry of beer. With my background in biochemistry, I was able to enjoy a detailed analysis on the subject. My only negative criticism is George Fix's excessive and sometimes exhaustive references to his own literature. Fix referred to himself about 40 times in this 173 page book. That is almost 1 reference per 4 pages, not to mention the fact that roughly one third of the book is charts and diagrams. What is most disturbing is that his other book, An Analysis of Brewing Techniques, makes numerous references to this book. The reader ends up getting caught in a futile cycle of references between these two books where some of the referred items are redundant. This round-about circle of references boarders on academic dishonesty. Another eyebrow raising issue is a reference Fix attributes to Rabin and Forget, 1998 on page 152. The reference section, however, has no list of Rabin or Forget. In all fairness, this book is the best compilation of the science behind the beer process and is quite informative. But I think it would be better suited as an appendix for his other book.

            4 out of 5 stars Excellent - improved over 1st Edition.......2000-01-18

George has cleaned up this edition and offers many more citations and support than in the first edition. The style is scientific, clear and concise. George is not afraid to get into the hard topics. This is an excellent introduction to brewing chemistry throughout the cycle.
