Bertil Ohlin, international trade theorist, winner of the 1977 Nobel Prize in Economics, and leader of the Swedish Liberal Party for more than twenty years, is considered to be the major single influence on the development of international economics in the twentieth century. This volume, celebrating the centennial of Ohlin's birth, examines his life and his influence on modern economic thought. It also contains the first English translation of his licentiate thesis, in which he first set out his theory of international trade.

Book Description
Evel Knievel became famous in the 1960s and 70s for his motorcycle jumps, culminating in the Snake River Canyon jump in 1973, on a "sky-cycle." This biography traces his life from his childhood in Montana to his decline into alcoholism at age 60.
Customer Reviews:
Evel Knievel.......2004-09-06
Steve Mandich dwells deep into the life of evel knievel he did
well research on the book and now there is a made for tv movi
e about Evel staring George Eads Well written book
Evel Knievel - the BEST book on Knievel bar none!.......2001-11-08
Simply stunning work by the obviously Knievel obsessed Steve Mandich. Really well researched and put together - this makes interesting reading for all those with an interest in the 'real' story of Buttes bad boy, but it will appeal to anyone who enjoys a good book. Buy it today and I'm sure you'll love it. Just don't go jumping any canyons.
Balance, skill and control - Mandich has what Evel lacked.......2001-10-04
Let's just say that the BBC documentary `Touch of Evel' would have
benefitted greatly if this book had been available at the time of
production! Mandich's masterly yet affectionate execution fills in all the
gaps - it is the quiet authoritative voice behind the hollering and bluster
of the legend. It shows meticulous research without descending into geekdom,
and hits the spot more accurately than Evel did in a thousand jumps.
Splendid.
Deft handling of the career of Evel........2001-10-04
The beauty of Mandich's incredibly well-researched book lies in it's deft handling of the myth and reality of the life of Evel Knievel. It's what makes it a compelling read for anyone, whether they be a die-hard Evel fan, rev-head or anyone with even a passing interest in one of the 20th centuries more interesting celebrity sporstman. The engaging writing style makes this not just a great biography but also a fascinating story.

Customer Reviews:
not worth the paper it's printed on.......2007-09-30
The "Divine Feud" offers no new information, no new interviews and no types of facts to back up the author's ridiculous accusations. Instead, it's second-hand gossip that has been passed down for years and years. The only problem is, by the time it made its way into this book much of the momentum was lost. Shaun Considine just wanted to capitalize on Joan Crawford's good name. But, Joan never hated Bette Davis and vice versa. Bette Davis even complimented Ms. Crawford during one of her last interviews (with David Letterman.) Joan was the MGM box-office Queen of the 20's and 30's and Bette was the "actress" of Warners throughout the 30's and 40's; I suppose it was only natural for the rumor-mongers to stir up trouble where there wasn't any. Why can't people believe that two strong and talented woman can celebrate each other's accomplishments, rather than backstab? Why are people so quick to believe the worst in others? Joan Crawford always looked up to Bette Davis. She wasn't a conniving person. She was kind and loving to her coworkers and her fans and to anyone else that would give her a chance. If you want to honor Ms. Crawford and Bette Davis, watch them in their 60's cult-classic What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (Two-Disc Special Edition) and skip this dreadful mess!
Camp tittle-tattle.......2007-01-23
Only mildly entertaining because so little of it rings true. The frequent quotes are often as not from the columns of Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper or from a gossip magazine called Motion Picture, yet they are treated as fact. There is little analysis of the artistry and ravishing beauty of Crawford and Davis' film work. The endless exchanges of witless, bitchy quips is, in the end, deadening and depressing.
DISHY.......2005-04-15
Here's a treat for you: the inside scoop of two legendary divas who ruled the screens while despising one another, who nearly came to blows on the set of the classic Whatever Happened to Baby Jane movie, and whose love hate relationship was as famous as their tormented lives behind the glamour. Take Inside Edition's tabloid style and add a touch of Entertainment Tonight's interview vault and you get a pretty good idea what's in store for you. Sure, the novel doesn't break any literary ground, but what do you expect when its theme is the over-the-top antics of its two subjects.-----Martin Boucher
What a coupla great broads.......2004-06-13
This is a really well-written book---two bio's in one, parallel chronologies expertly interwoven, and bountiful barbs. Hilarious as well as poignant, this one volume brought these true legends much more to life than any of their individual auto/biographies I've read.
Through comparison and contrast---more often than not in their own oblique or direct words---Considine captures Bette and Joan from angles not, I think, so fully considered in other works. One comes to a better understanding of their personalities and how each both affected, and was affected by, their numerous characters as well as each other in their endless arguments over which was the "actor" and which the "star."
Augumentatively orbiting each other for decades until their professional tangent in "Baby Jane", these two really did share much mutual respect and admiration, though seemingly less for the person and more for the performer. Virtually all of it, however, went unexpressed or unbelieved.
One wonders what might have been had these two followed the last sentiments of Jane to Blanche: "you mean all this time we coulda been friends?" But think of the tangalizing tale of Hollywood oneupmanship we would have missed if they had.
(note: there is no mention of Bette's death in this 1989 publication, which evidently preceeded it in October of the same year)
Fantabulous Gorgeousness!.......2004-02-16
Oh, my, a book chronicling the legendary feud between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford! The same feud that inspired such quotes as 'Hollywood's first case of syphillis, I wouldn;t sit on her toilet' (Bette on Joan) and 'Some would call it Art. I would call it camouflage' (Joan on Bette's makeup)! A book chronicling not only the face-to-face fights but also the lives of the two most enduring legends of the Hollywood Machine??
Sign me up!!
When I got my hands on this book, I had expected it to be a sycophantically-observed tirade on Who Did What To Whom (A bit like Andrew Morton's Madonna, or Christina Crawford's Mommie Dearest), but happily Sean Considine has more than enough intelligence and talent not to allow this to happen. A huge, absorbing book, it literally takes each of these Uber-Divas in turn, and, chapter by chapter, charts their meteoric rise from very different beginnings to Hollywood Royalty-status, right to the lonely end of Ms. Crawford (she died first). Included are several wonderful asides about certain movies, and light is shed on some of the more over-exaggerated aspects of the stars' lives (such as Joan's children and Bette's fracas with Warner Bros). First-hand interviews with each of the stars preface the book, and I challenge anyone who is a fan not to find something new in here (for example, did you know that Joan was supposed to play Christopher Reeve's mother in Superman? Except she died before the movie casting people found out?).
Considine is clearly a fan of both women, but does a commendable job of keeping commentary unbiased and even, and, happily, gives it a hefty dose of dry observational humour, to boot. It's a meandering, hugely-detailed style of writing, and one, while not perhaps best suited to a stereotypical biography, here it works better than anything else could have. We know already pretty much everything we can know about these two women, and thanks to Considine's wit and superior talent as a biographer, we re-read it without being bored.
Photos are nothing special (though there are some lovely shots of young Bette, who, despite popular opinion, was a very beautiful young woman), but that's secondary when a story is so absorbing and well-told. Curl up with a hefty glass of vodka, send the children to bed (or give them to Carol-Anne to tie up, whatever :-), and enjoy this intelligently-told, totally engrossing story.
Highly recommended.

Book Description
Conspiranoia (ken - spir - e - noi' - e): The tendency on the part of an individual or group toward rational or irrational, justifiable or excessive suspiciousness and distrustfulness of others based on the belief that others have joined in a secret agreement to commit an unlawful or wrongful act, or to keep the truth, as the believer sees it, secret. (from the introduction to Conspiranoia!)
What do Pan Am flight 103, JFK, mercury fillings, the Mars Pathfinder, Henry Luce, The Grateful Dead, Teletubbies, and Mad Cow Disease all have in common? The answer to this question is clearly that they are all, in some highly explosive, ultra-confidential fashion, related. Conspiranoia! does what no other conspiracy book has done before: it connects all the dots. Arranged by subject matter, it opens with "The Master Plan" and then branches off into twenty of the world's most famous conspiracy theories, showing through the use of intricate maps how everything and everyone is connected. Conspiranoia! is the perfect mixture of family tree, road map, encyclopedia, and guidebook to delight conspiracy fans and skeptics alike. It happily follows along on any and all of the paper trails, and cheekily grants license to myth as well as fact.
Customer Reviews:
Not the definative "be all to end all", but worth having.......2006-11-07
I purchased this book almost a year ago. The format is difficult to follow, but it is full of very good info; some of it new to me. I wouldn't think of it as the only conspiracy book you will ever need, but it is useful as a starting point to investigate almost every area in the vast conspiracy universe. I finished the book with twenty or thirty names and events that I want to investigate further. I think that this book would make a great third or fourth conspiacy book for the novice to read. I'm sure it will lead to reading a dozen or more, more detailed books, at least it has for me.
more of a joke book.......2004-12-08
This is not a book for someone looking for serious conspiracy theories and/ or good solid information. The dictionary type format is also very hard to follow. This book should be called "Conspirannoying".
An Encyclopedia of Conspiracy Theories.......2002-07-03
Author Devon Jackson is not here to tell you whether the theories are right or wrong. He does no analysis along those lines. His book is a lighthearted look of all the theories. Sometimes he seems serious and sometimes he's silly. He seems to be liberal, so he has no trouble recording the supposed misdoings of right wingers, but sometimes he soft peddles when dealing with groups protected by political correctness, to keep himself out of hot water, I suppose.
He has a flow chart drawn by hand on the proverbial crumpled piece of notebook paper showing how all the conspiracy groups are interconnected. I think the funniest conspiracy was the one in which it is said that mercury fillings are used to transmit messages for NASA to the Aliens. Now that's creative! However, I do believe that mercury filling could possibly be poisonous and its better to get the more expensive plastic ones to avoid health problems.
The most interesting conspiracy is how some prominent Americans were Nazi sympathizers, like Allen Dulles. They helped some prominent Nazis get out of Germany after WWII under the CIA's Operation Paperclip and helped them get jobs working for places like NASA. I think I would like to read more about this one. The book presents theories and if your interested you can seek out a more in depth coverage elsewhere. However, the book does not have a bibliography, so you're on your own trying to find them. The book also lists quotes from prominent individuals confirming or denying a grand conspiracy and they are loosely documented to some source, but without a page number. What I'm trying to say is the book is not well-documented.
The book is a fun read, if ultimately frivolous. Doing an analysis on whether the conspiracy theories are true or false is really where the attraction lies with conspiracy theories. Maybe he should have played the theories up more for laughs, because if the theories aren't true and it's just paranoia, paranoia does have its very funny side. Perhaps some clever film maker will come up a funny film about paranoia one of these days.
Fiction writting.......2001-12-21
Anyone can say or write anything this book is highly fictional. No real facts are mentioned in this book but mostly hearsay.
A lucid account.......2000-12-18
First can I confess to my grudging admiration at Jackson's effort; the guy almost pulls it off. The narrative and style give precedence to the theory itself as if it had an independent life from the content. Clever stuff, and his paymasters will be pleased at the smokescreen he has managed to erect. Let's hope they'll remember this when the ballon does go up.

Maybe I am not entirely fair.......2000-08-27
Maybe I am not fair (about the 1 star rating), because I did not read this book from cover to cover. Let's be fair: cadogan (or everyman) makes great books, including about the QGA. But this entire "easy guide" series is a little misguided. The back cover says: "just enough detail and explanation to play an opening with confidence". Not true. The book starts with typical QGA positions. I went trough them: they have practically nothing in common. Each chapter starts with some other positions, then the author gets to the "theory", which is absolutely not exhaustive. I am glad I did not buy the "scheveningen" easy guide as well. Conclusion: if u know how to play the QGA already, maybe there's something for you in this book. For the rest: find something with more meat.

I had to buy the book for a course on Flash, but was disappointed when we covered most of the book in the first day. Easy to understand for a complete beginner. May be useful then.

I bought this book to learn Flash...and I was dissapointed. There are no lessons, it's pretty much a user's manual. "Here is the brush tool and this is how you use it. This is the fill button and how you use it. Now, draw a line as mentioned in section 2." If you like learning a program function by function, then this book is for you. I'm going to exchange this book for sams teach yourself Flash 8 as it has lessons and you learn to use the program as a whole.

Succinct and highly readable, this group portrait of the 11 women who gave birth to America's 20th-century presidents might just put a more favorable spin on the phrase "mama's boy." From Franklin Roosevelt to Bill Clinton, all these chief executives were devoted to their mothers (relations with Dad were often more problematic), and that devotion had a direct effect on their presidencies--for the most part, a positive one. Sara Delano Roosevelt's adoration gave her son the self-confidence necessary to champion the New Deal's more unpopular measures. Martha Truman's personal experiences of the Civil War's bitter aftermath inspired Harry's determination to lend a hand to the vanquished as well as the victorious after World War II. Ida Eisenhower's pacifism didn't prevent her from supporting Dwight's decision to pursue a military career, but it shaped him into that welcome rarity, "a military leader who hated war." Lillian Carter's defiance of Southern mores to espouse civil rights and her precedent-shattering stint in the Peace Corps (at age 68) affected Jimmy's emphasis on human rights as well as his post-presidential commitment to serve the less fortunate. Virginia Kelley gets slapped for imparting to Bill Clinton the sense that "rules were for other people," but she's also credited with instilling his famous ability to feel other people's pain. In First Mothers, Bonnie Angelo, a longtime correspondent for Time magazine, delineates 11 different lives with a journalist's gift for cogency and an ability to see underlying similarities. Many of the facts here are familiar, but her interpretations are fresh. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
First Mothers tells the captivating stories of the mothers who played such large roles in developing the characters of the modern American presidents. The book covers a wide range of memorable personalities, from formidably aristocratic Sara Delano Roosevelt to diehard Democrat Martha Truman, from zealous pacifist Ida Eisenhower to family matriarch Rose Kennedy, nurturing Rebekah Baines Johnson, stoic Hannah Milhous Nixon, and courageous Dorothy Ford. From outspoken Peace Corps mother Lillian Carter to would-be actress Nelle Reagan, champion athlete Dorothy Bush, and gambling, hard-living Virginia Kelley Clinton, First Mothers invites us into the historic lives of these extraordinary women.
Much has been written about First Ladies, but now Bonnie Angelo, a veteran correspondent and bureau chief for Time, has captured the daily lives, thoughts, and feelings of these remarkable mothers and the relationships between them and their sons. Angelo recounts stories of traditional family values nurtured to the fullest, examples that should resonate with today's parents. She blends these women's stories with the texture of their lives and the colorful details of their times, and creates much more than faded daguerreotypes in their family albums. Her enthralling personal anecdotes leap off the page to reveal brilliant, moving lives, up close and personal. Based on dozens of interviews with the president-sons and other living relatives of these remarkable women, First Mothers is a richly textured, in-depth look at the lives, the influence, and the patterns that can be identified in the special mother-son relationships that nurtured the modern American presidents -- the last eleven -- to the pinnacle of power.
Customer Reviews:
History is subjective........2007-08-07
Although First Mothers is an interesting topic, this book had a few serious flaws. The author is obviously a journalist, not a non-fiction author. The chapters felt a little choppy, and the lack of a firm timeline was confusing at times. Also, there was a strong bias throughout the book, particularly in favor of Rose Kennedy. It was an interesting book that was obviously researched extensively. But it was a bit too nostalgic.
First Mothers: The Women Who Shaped the Presidents.......2005-08-08
This was a very informative book, well-written and interesting. Numerous facts not before know to me were written in this book. I felt each of the mothers was unique, but many had similar characteristics. I really enjoyed reading this book.
Doesn't get my vote........2004-05-17
Predictable. This book only made me turn the pages because I was hoping to find some golden nugget of information that would truly link the Presidents. It was not to be found.
Understanding Our Roots, and Our Mothers.......2004-02-14
Imagine if the public throughout history had been privileged to read books and concepts like this one. We might have had entirely different Presidents than we had, or we might have had a much better understanding of the kind of President we were getting. Barbara Bush has been around for some time, and most know both her influence, and her ability to put people at ease with her common sense and her style. We've yet to hear anything about the mothers of the current candidates in 2004, but who would not remember Lillian Carter, feisty as she was, a no nonsense strict disciplinarian if my memory serves me correctly, but endearing, and honored by her son, the President. One of the most powerful mothers of all was Bill Clinton's mother, and when I read her story I wept, not only for her, but for her family, and in part, for me, and for all of the women I'd known who had to march forward in life in less than ideal circumstances. Hers were pretty bad, but they sounded more familiar than not, unfortunately, as I'm sure they did to many others. I had never read a more powerful personal reflection and about such deeply troubling topics. Their familiarity continues to move me whenever I think about it. With all of our rhetoric about how we claim to be opposed to domestic violence, physical, emotional and verbal, we've done little to the vast need that actually exists. She may have been the first that I'm aware of in my lifetime to be so candid, and be connected to so powerful a person as a President of the United States. Surely, that is a major step forward for America, and one hopefully not lost on American women, even if it is usually on American men. Because we prefer our heroes complete with shining armor and white horse, we are not prepared for the knowledge that they had endured some of the common problems that affect so many families. The revelation was striking, and provides an extraordinary backdrop to understanding her son, the President, and perhaps a little of his administration despite their obvious gender differences. Men are often measured by their fathers as the "chips off the old block," as Dad's are inclined to view them, but in fact, most have far more affinity with their mothers to whom they have been the most intimate and honest. It is the reason that Barbara Bush can look at her son, and wonder if he would make a good President, as she did once, and why Lillian was not about to become lax with her son. The high expectations that mothers have of their sons as adults is far higher than their fathers do, and sons nearly always feel the pressure of that concern, as well as the love that accompanies it. Fathers have high expectations of their sons as youngsters, generally, to prepared them for that task, but it is usually the mothers who scrutinize and measure their progress the most intensely. Any book that attempts to define the relationship of Presidents and their sons, or even any prominent sons, and their mothers is well worth the effort and the expense for understanding how those gentlemen are able to rise to meet those expectations, and the struggles to get there. This is true family entertainment, and among the most worthwhile available for family values, and perhaps, for family progress.
Easy and informative read.......2003-08-01
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. An easy read with tons of anecdotes and facts that made the presidents and their families come alive.

Customer Reviews:
not at all formatted for the AP world test!.......2007-05-05
Last year I decided to be a good history student and get all my facts straight for the exam. I read many reviews and completed all the practice tests and essays. After exhausting Barrons, Princeton, and Kaplan..all of which were helpful in one way or another my mom bought me this book.
I opened it up, eager for a little more practice. Being already familiar with the AP format, I quickly realized this book was way off base. Sure it talks about world history, but not in the same focus or emohasis as the ap test. Furthermore the multiple choice questions are weird and ridiculous. This book really will not help you at all. After reading the first chapter and some practice questions i was fed up and returned the book. Instead of wasting my time with this Cliffs, I reread prince/barrons/kaplan.....much better books.
Great tool for the CSET Social Science subtest 1.......2006-09-18
Because there is not a good resource specifically for the CSET single subject, I used this book as my main study source. It will still take a great deal of time to read through and retain all the information, but it's the history of the world -- what do you expect? It is not too brief and yet not too windy. The porridge is just right.
Very disappointing.......2006-04-29
I bought this book on amazon.com, and I was judging it mainly on the table of contents. Big mistake.
This book probably has some great information, and it just might be useful if it were about 150 pp. shorter, or if I had another 1/2 year to study.
My main problems with the CliffsAP World History book:
1)small font and drawn-out sentence structure
--this is a review guide, but it's about 1/4 as long as my actual text book. There is no possible way for me to read and retain all the information. The author insists on writing in essay form, instead of breaking down the material in an easy to process way. The book is about 300pp, the font is small, and the practice tests take up way less room than average.
2)There are no timelines, no diagrams, no pictures. Even the practice tests exclude these things. This is misleading and just plain upsetting, because it is common knowledge that the AP test itself has many questions involving map+artistic interpretation. Also, timelines, charts, etc, can be very good for review. Using this book, it took me more than 15 minutes to figure out the order of the Chinese dynasties--something that could have been interpreted from a timeline in mere seconds.
3) This book includes almost no info on how the AP itself is scored.
In conclusion, I would not recommend this book to anyone. Even the practice tests are flawed and misleading--and there is not even a way to calculate a prospective score.
Such a disappointment, considering how wonderful the CliffsAP Bio book is.
this book was a disappointment .......2006-04-29
this book did not help me i am a very smart ap world student and this book was a disappointment, i was soooo sad, cuz this book was so crappy, the only thing i recognized was the reneissance. i can not tell you how disappointed i was. the test talked about mongols, mongold what are mongols i found myself asking, i dont remember mongols, there are mongols on this test??? THIS WASNT IN MY EUROPEAN HISTORY BOOK!?! DONT BUY THIS OR THE MONGOLS WILL HATE U CUZ THEY DONT GET MENTIONED
fantastic.......2006-04-25
This book ranks up there with the Barron's and the PR World History book.
The tests at the end of the book are very well written, and there are 3 of them more than the Barron's and PR, so if you want some last minute studying or just to take the tests I would pick up a copy of the Cliffnotes book.

Book Description
A voyage into the world of ancient flying vehicles, ancient legends of flight and the mysterious power system of Atlantis. The evidence, from ancient texts through cutting-edge science, demonstrates that Atlantis not only existed, but that it had a world-wide energy system more sophisticated than ours of today, using the earth as a giant power plant. In fact, the Crystal Energy Towers of Atlantis may still exist! Richly illustrated, it sweeps the reader from from ancient texts from the centuries old The Royal Baroda Library in Mysore India to diagrams of the power broadcasting Crystal Towers of Atlantis. The book includes: * How electrified plasma gyros create anti-gravity * Mercury proton Gyros and mercury vortex propulsion * Ramayana and the vimanas of ancient India * Nikola Tesla's strangely system of power transmission

What the f***?.......2004-07-17
I cannot believe that people read this tripe and believe it. Where is the archaeological evidence for 'crystal energy towers'? um, no. can't recall seeing any of that on the digs i've been on. please please please read this only for the amusement value.
A fascinating, iconoclastic hypothesis.......2002-06-06
Atlantis And The Power System Of The Gods: Mercury Vortex Generators And The Power System Of Atlantis is an articulate, detailed, hard-hitting metaphysical study and a very welcome contribution to Atlantean Studies. Part I is reprint in its entirety of the hard-to-find 1990 book "Mercury: UFO Messenger of the Gods" by Bill Clenendon, a fascinating, impressive look at ancient flying vehicles. Part II, by David Hatcher Childress, cogently addresses in depth the theories that the ancient civilization of Atlantis used broadcasting power from gigantic towers of crystal. Connections between Atlantis, Egypt, and Ethiopia are drawn in this fascinating, iconoclastic hypothesis of a power that transcends centuries and predates the era of western science.
