Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2001-05-24
I bought this tremendous book to help ease me back into work which I hadn't done for over 20 years, and I found it a tremendous help. I did some stunts and body doubling for the TV series "Cannon" back in the 70s (actor William Conrad didn't do his own buttwork for the nude scenes) and bought this handy guide to bring me up to speed on the industry. The tips proved invaluable - don't take my word for it, look out for yours truly as "man eating hamburger" in "Independence Day" and "man chugging pizza" in "Chasing Amy".
Great Information for Someone Starting Out!.......2000-07-18
This is a great book for anyone interested in background acting. The book is loaded with resources. After reading the book I had a better direction and lots of motivation to help develop my "hobby" of being a background actor. The only drawback is that many of the resources are not too useful if you don't live in California. If you DO live in CA, get this book!
The book that ALL actors and background(extras) should read........2000-01-26
Years ago I used Cullen's book to help break into the business. I've heeded his advice, studied my craft and enjoyed the benefits that SAG offers as a result of merely studying the 1993 edition of this same book. For the novice, particularly the non-union extra, it's a wonderful tool. It saves money due to it's rating system, also warning of agencies making their bucks from registering new folks at a premium. Just about every area is covered for both old and new in the business. It is attuned to Los Angeles, but this happens to be the only area in the country with a constant influx of talent, with a fluctuating volume of work. I personally have worked with Cullen a number of times over the years, most memorably on Star Trek 'Voyager' and a number of commercials. The only book on the subject I'll recommend.
Simply the Best!.......1999-04-23
"I recommend that all my beginning students read Cullen Chambers'book BACK TO ONE...It is a real treasure; you get all the education you need to become an extra for...A BARGAIN!"

Fastest way for an outsider to become an insider.......1998-12-21
I don't know if you can actually make good money as a Hollywood extra (minimum wage for non-union, $86 a day union, commercials pay much higher) but this book is a must for anyone without contacts in Hollywood. Mr. Chambers gives you names, addresses, and phones numbers of just about all the extra casting agencies in town. Perfect for research, getting to know your way around and make a few extra dollars on the side. As an extra performer you will be in front of the cameras before long and with 3 SAG vouchers under your belt, you'll qualify to join the Screen Actor's union. Well worth the investment.
Book Description
This amazing portrait of the bizarre, shocking, weird, and wonderful moments that have come to define American popular culture is a follow-up to the critically acclaimed James Dean Died Here and Marilyn Monroe Dyed Here. A third collection of the locations where the most significant events in American popular culture took place, this offers a fully illustrated encyclopedic look at the most famous—and infamous—pop culture events, providing historical information on more than 600 landmarks as well as their exact locations. Included in the wacky and fantastic listing of landmarks and events are the Los Angeles park where Elvis Presley and his entourage would organize spirited touch football games against other celebrities, the birthplaces of Coca-Cola and the corn dog, the place where Ben Franklin flew a kite, the hotel where Rob Lowe's scandalous sex tape was filmed, Quentin Tarantino's video store, and the location where Tennessee Williams wrote A Streetcar Named Desire.

Elvis Presley Passed Here.......2005-07-19
A third great book in this series, (James Dean Died Here; Marilyn Monroe Dyed Here), by author Chris Epting. All three are must haves for anyone interested in American pop and historical icons. With a location and brief summary, each place is easily found. Plus Chris has gone to great strides as to the accuracy of the factual information given. I personally know Chris by way of email and snail mail, and I can tell you he is a great person with a great personality, and that those qualities shine through in his work as well.
Elvis Presley Passed Here.......2005-06-02
Another outstanding book from Chris Epting. A must for every glove compartment or carry-on flight bag--this is your instant guide to "where it happened". As always with Mr. Epting's previous books--it is well researched, with addresses and directions, photographs, and great descriptions of the actual sites where history was made. This is that perfect gift for any age--and an absolute must for any traveler. When is the Travel Channel going to make Mr. Epting's books into a series? PS: besides his trilogy pop culture books he has written the world's best sports book: Roadside Baseball--take this one with you too as you travel this summmer. Like with all his books--you won't be able to put it down (includes a great forward from Joe Buck). When was the last time an author was so much fun to read but you were educated at the same time?
This Book Has Become An Essential Part Of My Travel Library!.......2005-05-17
Elvis Passed Here is the third in this series of books written by Chris Epting, and as I expected, exceeds my expectations. As with the previous books (James Dean Died Here & Marilyn Monroe Dyed Here), Chris guides us to the locations of other pop culture landmarks. What I particularly like about these books is the broad range of categories he chooses to cover. In addition to the categories one would expect (movies, music, art, etc.), Chris has also included chapters dedicated to such bizarre subjects as infamous celebrity events, historical tragic events, and crime.
I was fascinated to learn about pop culture locations in and around the city where I live. Locations that I didn't even know existed, or that I have probably seen countless times and not taken notice of.
This book, and those before it, have also added a new dimension to vacations and trips for me. Whenever I plan a trip, I now consult these books to see what pop culture locations exist where I'm going. For example, on our recent trip to New York City, I was able to eat at the first pizzeria in North America, visit the club where Jimi Hendrix was discovered, sit at the table where the famous scene from "When Harry Met Sally" was filmed, and find the location where the photo on the cover of Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti album was taken.
I would definitely recommend this book to those who want to add a fun and exciting new element to their travels!
This is a Pop-culture Traveler's "Must Have".......2005-05-03
Epting has done it again. He continues to take us on the road to "live" the events that happened in America's history. We toured with James Dean and then Marilyn Monroe. The third book in his trilogy is as exciting as his predecessors and a must have if you are an Epting "junkie." If for nothing else get this book to complete the set; after all who has only two volumes of "Lord of the Rings"? It's time to grab your camera and get out on the road. Come on; tell me who wouldn't want to fly a kite in the same place as Ben?

No examples.......2007-05-21
I've read quite a few computer how-to books. I prefer to learn by example, which this book offers very little of. Rather than showing you how to do something, this book tells you how to do it in a long drawn out process.
I could not figure out how to use the advanced filter command with this book. I checked out the Excel 2003 Bible from the library and I was able to use this feature within 5 minutes. Do not buy this book!
Excel 2003 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies.......2005-09-26
Excel 2003 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is a great overall book for Excel 2003. It will get you going on Excel 2003 even if you have a minimal amount of experience in Excel. Introduces you to formulas, charts, pivot tables and other subjects that most people need in order to fully utilizing the power of Excel. Written very well and easy to understand.
Not for beginners and not for reference.......2005-03-26
I rate this book poor. It is badly laid out. Unless you already know how to use Excel, this book would be of no value to you. It's impossible to find anything, and not enough relevent illustrations. The For Dummies series is off my list of reference books. Save your money.
There's tons of useful information in this book........2003-10-25
I use Excel at work all the time and this book is always within an arm's reach. The formulas and functions chapters are especially helpful -- as are the ones on PivotTables, building Macros, and sharing data with other programs. If you're only going to buy one book on Excel, buy this one!

Fritz Reiner receives his due honor.......2006-03-17
As Dr. Reiner conducted the first Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert I ever heard, I have held a fond place in my heart towards him. Therefore it is a treat to have this more analytical biography of the musical life of this great Hungarian-American conductor to accompany Philip Hart's 1994 "Fritz Reiner: A Biography", which was rather anecdotal in its approach. Morgan has also blessed us with his detailed information on the Reiner recordings, which for the standard repertoire, as well as for most of the orchestral works of Richard Strauss, and also some surprise offerings, my favorite being Alan Hovhaness' "Mysterious Mountain" Symphony No.2, has created one of the most important American archives of classical musical interpretation, ranking finally, I believe, in importance even above that of the recorded musical legacy of Leonard Bernstein. Hopefully still more of the older commercial recordings and the taped live performances of Reiner with various orchestras over the decades will be recovered, engineered, and released on CD (or whatever format the future holds for us) - Kenneth Morgan has gone the full measure to document those issued to date.
Book Description
Colorado's Japanese Americans is the first history of this significant minority in the Centennial State, penned by renowned journalist and author Bill Hosokawa.
Hosokawa traces personal histories, such as Bob Sakata's journey from internment in a relocation camp to his founding of a prosperous truck farm; the conviction of three sisters for assisting the escape of German POWs; and the years of initiative and determination behind Toshihiro Kizaki's ownership of Sushi Den, a beloved Denver eatery. In addition to personal stories, the author also relates the larger history of the interweave of cultures in Colorado, from the founding of the Navy's Japanese language school at the University of Colorado to the merging of predominantly white and Japanese American congregations at Arvada's Simpson United Methodist Church. With the author's long view and sharp eye, Colorado's Japanese Americans creates a storied document about the legacy of the Issei and! Nisei in the Centennial State.
Colorado's Japanese Americans is the first edition in the new Timberline Series from the University Press of Colorado, and is the co-winner of the 2005 Colorado Endowment for the Humanities Publication Prize.

History and applications.......2006-12-10
This book is friendly and chatty and makes quite good use of historical and cultural aspects of mathematics, but best of all is its discussions of many interesting applications. Elementary geometry leads to Eratosthenes's famous measurement of the circumference of the earth (6.3) and a camera obscura determination of the radius of the sun given its distance (6.3). Trigonometry brings many pretty things. Heron presented a method for digging a tunnel through a mountain from both ends simultaneously (7.3): to dig a north-south tunnel from a point N to a point S, find a point E east of the mountain such that NES is a right angle, then measure the lengths NE and SE, now calculate the angles ENS and ESN and give these values to the diggers. The radius of the earth can be determined by measuring the angle to the horizon from the top of a mountain (7.3). Hipparchus and Ptolemy "charted the heavens" by trigonometry (7.5). First calculates the distance to the moon as follows: when the moon is straight above some point P on the equator, walk along the equator until the moon is no longer visible and call this point Q; the moon will be out of sight precisely when the angle between the centre of the earth C, the point Q, and the moon M is right; by measuring the difference in longitude between P and Q we know the angle QCM, and we already know the radius of the earth QC, so we can compute the distance to the moon EM. Knowing EM, if we were standing at the moon we could measure the angle CMQ and compute the radius of the earth QC; so now we invert the roles of the earth and the moon and calculate the radius of the moon. The same procedure of course applies to the sun. Distance from Venus (or Mercury) to the sun: continually measure the angle VES; when it's at a maximum the angle EVS will be right, and we know ES so we can find VS. Later we use Gallilean mechanics (16.3-16.5) to study the motion of projectiles. Unfortunately, Kline excludes a beautiful application that he discusses in his book "Mathematics and the Physical World": to shoot down a vertically dropping bomb one should fire towards the point where the bomb is dropped at the instant it is dropped; this guarantees a hit regardless of firing velocity. With Newtonian mechanics we can determine the mass of the earth by experiment since it is the only unknown in F=gravity=ma for ordinary falling objects (17.6). F=gravity=ma applied to the earth-sun system now has two unknowns, mass of the sun and acceleration of the earth, but the acceleration of the earth must be such that the earth is kept in an almost circular orbit so we we know it in principle and this is enough to solve for the mass of the sun (17.6). Knowing the radii of the earth and the sun from above, we can compute that the density of the earth is about four times that of the sun, and 5.5 times that of water. The short introduction to the calculus is less successful, leading only to somewhat sluggish treatments of escape velocity (19.6) and the equation of the cable of a bridge (19.7). But at least the escape velocity discussion gives a definite numerical answer to an interesting problem; this is unfortunately more than can be said about the quite shallow discussions of trigonometric series analysis of sound waves and the generation of current in a wire loop rotating in a magnetic field. Finally, we must praise the very interesting chapter on the geometry of renaissance art, which has 19 paintings in it.
Best Book on the Historical Development of Advanced Mathematics........2006-09-21
I read this interesting Dover Classic on Mathematics, when i was having some trouble undestanding advanced college math concepts. This book makes the calculus and geometry ,more palatable for the non-mathematician.This paperback will not make you a "math genius" overnight, however it will broaden your perception of whence mathematical concepts originated and leads you to whithersoever threshold of your math interest.Still a Classic!
Interesting stuff............2005-10-02
I am not a mathematician. I just happen to use math everyday in my trade. Just the usual stuff you use in finance. But I am interested in math, maybe just for fun (??!!). And I found this book to be very well written, very interesting and also it has a lot of history so you get to learn a lot and maybe in doing so, you also get to understand more clearly things that just pass you by when you were at school but you didn't really grasp them. This is math pageturner..I'm not kidding !!!
A good book for those interested, but not inclined for Math.......2005-07-10
MftN is a good book for those individuals who enjoy math and science, but who are not necessarily devoted to its study. I enjoyed the historical background and practical applications in math brought out by Kline (e.g., measuring the dimensions of the Earth).
Kline says that his book is intended for those liberal arts students who are not drawn to math. He tries to give those individuals the background and practical perspectives that will keep them interested. I believe he accomplishes this. I also believe that this type of story-teaching regarding mathematics could be useful for the science student as well.
Overall, the book is a very good read and one I highly recommend as long as you have the perserverance and desire to expand your knowledge of mathematics. If not, don't bother starting this book.
Still Useful.......2005-02-24
Though at times rather dated in tone, MftN is a solid introduction to the history and methods of mathematics. Emphasis on introduction. As Kline himself admits, MftN has little to say about the exceedingly complex history (let alone methods) of applied and pure mathematics in the last last hundred + years. An introduction of such sweeping scope would require several volumes. Kline does a superb job of explaining how mathematical thinking evolved from ancient times to the near present, before the veritable explosion of modern mathematics. His account is entertaining and informative and his explanations (of a fairly substantial quantity of mathematics) are lucid. MftN is in no way a substitute for the textbook study of mathematics, but it is a terrific introduction to such an undertaking. I imagine Kline was a superb classroom teacher back in the day. He is just as engaging today. I look forward to reading some of his other books, in particular his massive tome on the intuitive approach to calculus (a topic that is handled particularly well in MftN).
