Book Description

Bold Entrepreneur is the scholarly biography of James B. Duke, a man who was more important to Duke University than it was to him or his life. His munificence in underwriting the establishment and permanent support of Duke University came towards the end of his life, after a long series of remarkable achievements in the business world. Along with such achievements, his great philanthropic actions have earned him a prominent place in history.

James B. Duke, or Buck as his family called him, took over the family's tobacco manufacturing business after his father retired. He also played a key role in the establishment and then management of the British-American Tobacco Company in and after 1901-1902. From the standpoint of business history alone, this was a pioneering and colorful venture. Duke also ventured into Canadian hydroelectricity, a highly creative and bold move that dramatically revealed his entrepreneurial panache and genius.

In this fascinating biography, Durden presents the life of a man who was not only a business genius, but also an avid horticulturist. He spent several million dollars on transforming a large portion of the Duke family farm in New Jersey into a magnificently landscaped park, one of the late Gilded Age's most magnificent country estates. This is also the biography of a most creative entrepreneurial capitalist, one who, after a lifetime of big business successes, finally turned his talent towards investing in a unique plan for perpetual philanthropy in the Carolinas.

Bold Entrepreneur: A Life Of James B. Duke by Robert F. Duren (Emeritus Professor of History, Duke University) is the scholarly biography of the prominent businessman who created the globe-spanning British-American Tobacco Company at the turn of the twentieth century. Robert Duke's labors, loves, and legacy are all deftly chartered in this meticulously researched and impeccably presented portrait, which unflinchingly presents the good with the bad.

Slammin' captures the fun, the spectacle, and the excitement of professional wrestling (in over 60 photos) while also providing accurate and comprehensive information about its stars, both past and present. Wrestling history can be divided into two distinct eras-before Hulk Hogan and after Hulk Hogan. As the sport's most recognizable superstar since Gorgeous George, Hogan has been the featured performer in almost every main event since the first Wrestlemania in 1984. However, the real pivotal figure in wrestling's evolution is WWF president Vince McMahon, who has built up a national network of syndicated stations in 200 cities.

      3 out of 5 stars Decent Enough.......2001-12-18

This Book gives a good Bio of many of the Stars but Mr Hofstede
makes too many mistakes or leaves out details. Here are two:
He says that the Giant got dropped on his head at Souled 97 but
it actually occurred on January 24 at WCW/NWO Souled Out.He also
when mentioning the Owen Hart/Steve Austin Incident forgets to
point out it was a Tombstone Piledriver, not a Regular Piledriver. Before this Person ever writes another book on
Wrestling, I Suggest he Watch every WWF,WCW, and ECW Pay-Per-
View to make damn sure he gets his dates and times right.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......1999-07-26

I loved this book. It's written by someone who knows what he's talking about, and I found it extremely well-researched. It's also surprisingly funny. Slammin' knows not to take wrestling too seriously, yet pays fitting tribute to the talented athletes who perform in the sport. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Good Read but Marred by Numerous Errors.......1999-07-23

This book was definitely interesting to read, but being a long-time fan of pro-wrestling I didn't learn a lot from it. There are numerous errors in the book, too numerous to list. The author's choice of wrestlers to write about is a little strange - No lenglth mention of Eddie Guerrero, Ricky Steamboat, The Steiner Brothers, Juventud Guerra, Billy Kidman, Booker T, etc. No ECW, Japanese or Mexican wrestlers (referring to promotion, not race) are profiled.

However, for beginning fans of pro-wrestling, this book is definitely a good read. You won't notice the errors but will learn a lot about the way the business works.

A good read, but a lot of the information is available for free if you look around on the internet.

      5 out of 5 stars Exquisite coffee-table reference on Italy's cult auteur.......2001-11-26

This fine book is an essential library addition to any fan of the late great Sergio Leone, Italy's supremely gifted-yet oft-maligned cult director. Jammed with gorgeous color and b&w photos, informative and often humorous interviews and back stories, De Fornari has put together a fine tribute/filmography that any Leone devotee, like myself, would treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Once Upon On A Leone.......2000-12-07

Sergio Leone directed my favorite Western film - Once Upon a Time in the West with Charles Bronson, Jason Robards, Henry Fonda and Claudia Cardinale! Great behind the scenes book on the director and his many films (Once Upon A Time in America, Clint Eastwood Man with No Name Triology). Offering insight from his crew, cast and associates! Great pictures and text! And insight from the director himself. Though this price is quite steep! One of the best films books that I have read!

      Book Description

"A great American institution"; "the bane of feminist ideology"; "a cornucopia of corn"; "the world's largest source of scholarship for women"--whatever the descriptor, few are neutral about the Miss America Pageant. Live from Atlantic City traces the pageant's history from its birth as pseudoevent in 1920 through its emergence as American popular culture icon. Although millions watch the pageant on television each year, Live from Atlantic City proposes that it is more than just a television show. Long before, after, and, some might argue, in spite of, television coverage, "a carnival of beauty ran riot on [Atlantic City's] famous Boardwalk." With or without the cameras, "bevies of sea nymphs," "beach peaches," and coeds have paraded up and down runways hoping to win a slice of the American dream. Indeed, long before, after, and very far away from the camera's dissecting lens, protesters have dissented, feminists picketed, and Miss America "wannabees" have frolicked on the fringes. Evidently, there's more to the pageant than meets the TV's eye. Live from Atlantic City takes the reader to times and places where no television camera has focused. Drawing upon (and sometimes debating with) primary and secondary sources, the author paints a vivid picture of life in Atlantic City during pageant week--whether that week be in 1944 or 1984. More than just chronicling events, the author also presents two opposing perspectives on the pageant: the pageant as celebration and idealization of American womanhood; the pageant as sexist, exploitative anachronism.

2 out of 5 stars A Book That Misses the Forest for the Trees.......2006-10-22

After reading this book, I found myself disappointed with an author that seemed to miss opportunity after opportunity for insightful analysis and instead focused on the minutiae of, say, the banter between an M.C. and a pageant contestant in a decades old tape of the Miss America pageant. Unless one is for some reason in need of highly detailed information on the proceedings of past Miss America pageants, I would suggest looking elsewhere for a book about beauty pageant culture.

If you are looking for a detailed, fully documented history of the Miss America Pageant then L.F.A.C. is your book. It is not only specific and insightful, but also looks at the pageant's evolution as a media event. It is scholarly in its approach.

2 out of 5 stars Live from Atlantic City: A History of the Miss America Page.......2001-03-18

Riverol's research and preparation for writing this book seems almost exhaustive, but his presentation is unexciting and repetitive. With only 96 pages of text to read, 25 pages of photographs, 15 pages of footnotes, 9 pages of "works cited" and 5 pages of index , the book seems unbalanced, but Riverol admits in his foreword that this is a "scholarly" study. The most interesting portion of the book is his "Preliminary Thoughts" which speaks of how and why beauty pageants arose in history. After this initial chapter, he goes through each decade of the pageant, beginning with the 1920's. We learn from him when talent became a factor, when the "Miss Congeniality" Award began and why it was stopped in 1975, and other important changes along the way, but he only lightly discusses incidents with the contestants and winners and there is almost no dialogue in the book. Instead we see repeated program lineups, lists of preliminary winners, and finalists, in at least six key pageants. The changes that TV brought are shown as well as how the pageant survived ups and downs such as the Vanessa Williams Penthouse incident and the feminists' protests. This history of the American icon which is also the largest scholarship program for women ends at 1992, the copyright date of the book.

An entertaining idea for running around with a group of friends and leaving notes saying 'hah-hah I just atomised you with my death trap that you forgot to account for', while just noticing the sticky mess they left on your door handle indicating an insidious contact poison is now all over your hand.

A fair bit of fun and hi-jinks.

4 out of 5 stars Great game, lots of fun.......2006-01-12

I had the opportunity to participate in and run a few of these games back in high school. This manual makes it extremely easy to set up and play a game tailored to whatever situation. It's very easy to read, and present the material in a manner that's easy to under stand & comprehensive. The hardest part about running this game is finding people who will be honest and take the game seriously. This game can still be fun, even in a post-September 11th world (just use common sense when setting up the rules). I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!!!.......2001-05-14

This book is awesome!!! The idea behind the book is to give the reader all the information they need to play a game of Killer a.k.a. Assassination. The point behind this popular game is to use either water guns, household objects, whatever, as a method to "kill" your opponent or opponents. This book gives different gaming scenarios like Mafia and Round Robin, as well as plenty of methods for killing. The best part of the book is this last part which lists tons of ways to get your opponent like taping a note under their car hood like a car bomb, poisoning their food and drinks by a similar method, or even setting up contraptions to drop "acid" on their head when they open the door! The beauty of these games is that they are done in real life, not sitting around a table ...like in D&D. Playing one of these games can make you a little paranoid that the world is out to get you, but it is fun! This book is a must have for any lovers of the game and is well worth the price for all of the information inside.

In this first biography on Mel Allen, perhaps the most famous sports broadcaster in American history, author Borell helps readers relive baseball's glorious radio days.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mel Allen led a charmed life.......2007-02-26

I judge biographies on whether or not I feel I really know this person by the end of the book. Mr. Borelli's comprehensive tome makes me feel like I spent time with Mel Allen as well as his family members, friends, peers and others from his era. I almost feel like I was there as the author describes Melvin Israel's rise from Alabama to "Gotham" and a Hall of Fame career as the voice of the Yankees. I think it was important to include the people, culture and events which were part of his surroundings and help paint a picture for those too young to remember.
The author's extensive list of sources, the numerous interviews and materials cited, give credibility to a somewhat daunting task. How do you sum up a person's life, especially after he is gone? Mr. Borelli has succeeded in this goal, which appears to have the secondary accomplishment of giving a lifetime Yankee fan the opportunity to delve into one of his hero's lives and meet, share with and learn from those who were close to Mel Allen.
I was not a Yankee fan before reading this book. That has not changed. I am a baseball fan, and I love reading great books about baseball and other sports. I am also a fan of those who work hard to achieve greatness in their field. I am now a fan of Mel Allen.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful Sports fan.......2007-02-10

Borelli's book is to be recommended for the sports fans who want to read more than the ordinary book about a well-known sports personality. He writes well and tells a compelling story of Mel Allen's life from an insider's viewpoint. One would have wished to have had Borelli's book years before, to really appreciate the personality behind the Voice.

He does particularly well when relating the details of Mel's firing by the NY Yankees in 1964. One need go no further than this book to understand what happened to the Voice of the Yankees during this difficult period in Allen's life a well as the lives of his fans who no longer had his golden voice to impart the real feel for the games.

In short, a great book by a really good writer. Let's hope Mr. Borelli writes more books of this kind!

5 out of 5 stars What do you think of these?.......2007-02-02

Borelli's account of Mel Allen's life is a great read. If you are a Yankee fan, Allen is one of those mythical names associated with the franchise. Borelli has a flair for keeping the reader on the edge of the seat waiting for more and he delivers each time. Allen's life reminded me of a true Greek drama; he started meekly, earned success and then went through a period of soul searching and redemption. A true journey that Borelli captures with passion and zeal. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Riveting, Comprehensive, and Brilliant!.......2007-02-01

Most of us merely knew Mel Allen by his distinct voice. In this powerful biography, Borelli captures the "man behind the man" that only few knew, but many yearned to meet.

Just as Allen turned the task of announcing a ball game into a work of fine art, Borelli's comprehensive and exhaustive depictions of Allen serve as the perfect tribute to a great man. Indeed, this was the perfect tribute to Allen's life.

The intricacies examined in this book are most impressive -- so much so that I read it a second time. Borelli has successfully taken a very public figure and unveiled facts that were previously unknown, which is ultimately what makes this book a fascinating (and quick) read.

        Top-notch work... highest marks!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous story about a fabulous life.......2007-01-01

Mel Allen was not only the voice of the Yankees: he was the voice of all baseball for three decades, as important a sports icon in his time as John Madden is to younger generations, and as respected a commentator as Marv Albert or Vin Scully. When you thought of baseball (and, as Stephen Borelli assiduously notes, any big-time sporting events), you could hear the soothing calm of Mel's clear, crisp Southern drawl as he effortlessly described at-bat after at-bat. Knowledgeable, charming and precise, Allen was simultaneously the most spontaneous and the most polished of all broadcasters. Nowadays we think little of these qualities in our high-definition, internet world, but at the time, most citizens were radio-bound, and they trusted and loved one man before all his peers, Melvin Allen.

Borelli's research is first-rate and wonderful entertainment, and will appeal both to diehard sports fans and those who love tantalizing narratives. I sat down one July evening after having bought my copy and read the whole thing, cover-to-cover, in four hours (missing dinner, I noticed only later). My wife, who is not overly interested in sports, also read it and greatly enjoyed it. It is a treasure trove of anecdotes, facts, figures, and, most of all, the story of the fantastic voyage of an impoverished Jewish boy from rural Alabama who fought prejudice and ignorance to become the most respected and highly paid sports broadcaster in the world. I loved Mel Allen before I read the book, and already considered him the epitome of announcers and someone whose kind we will never see again. After reading this superb account of his life, his times, and the lasting impact he made on both fans and players, I am even more settled in my opinion. As you will discover, there are hundreds of reasons why, in the words of George Steinbrenner himself, "no man in the history of the Yankees has ever meant more to the Yankees than Mel Allen."

        Book Description

In 1908, Englishman Sydney Gibbes was appointed tutor to the children of Tsar Nicholas II; over the next ten years, he became deeply attached to the Imperial family—and they to him. Here, Frances Welch draws on a wealth of unpublished material to cast new light on the fabled Romanov story, telling it from the tutor's unique point of view. Ultimately, the tragic events of the Russian Revolution devastated Gibbes, turning him into an obsessive Russophile, who was to go to extraordinary lengths to remain faithful to the old order.

4 out of 5 stars The Romanovs Revisted.......2007-04-12

A very interesting pocket book. A great perspective of the times. For a history buff, a good eye witness biographical account. However, considering the near epic situation of those times and places, the book seems sparse. A noticeable ommission are (the other?) Gibbes' photographs not published in this book. I've seen photographs published elsewhere that were attributed to be taking by Gibbs. A proper mix of these photos and the book would have added much. But still, this book is very much worth reading. For you history buffs, and a complementary account, check out Gilliard's writtings.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting book about an unusual man........2006-07-26

This book doesn't shed any new light on the Romanovs, but it does give new insight into a man who knew them very well. It is a short book, but very informative.

        5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Little Biography.......2006-01-23

Sydney Gibbes would have been unknown to all except his own family had he not taken the momentous step of going to Russia in the early 1900s. There he sought out work as tutor to the children of various noble families, with indifferent results and gaining a reputation for behavior, which while not all that unusual for the times, definitely raised a few eyebrows (especially his insistence on whipping his students). He strode into history in 1908 when Empress Alexandra Fedorovna needed a tutor to correct her daughters' accents and hired him sight unseen. Gibbes remained with the family for the next ten years through war and revolution, teaching the four Grand Duchesses and then the hemophiliac Tsarevich.

Gibbes doesn't strike the reader as particularly admirable at first. He was definitely a social-climber and not particularly talented as a teacher. His private life was mysterious, involving some mild flirtations with an Englishwoman and some dreams (carefully recorded for posterity by Gibbes himself) which seem classically Freudian.

Gibbes came into his own, and we find reason to respect and like him, with the Russian Revolution of March 1917. As an Englishman he could have easily left Russia and gone home to safety. Instead he chose to remain with the Imperial Family, sharing their captivity in their palace outside Petrograd and then in Tobolsk. He underwent considerable hardship and personal danger, but he was selflessly devoted to the family. Even after he was told to leave by the Bolsheviks who were holding the family in their final prison in Ekaterinburg he remained in the city, walking past the House of Special Purpose and trying to get in for visits. After the family's murder, he assisted the investigators trying to determine what had happened.

After leaving Russia Gibbes lived in China before returning to England. He became an Orthodox priest, adopted a Russian orphan boy, and spent most of the rest of his life in Oxford, maintaining a museum of keepsakes of the family he had served for so long. He was not particularly effective as a priest, but he was sadly missed and fondly remembered after his death, which is a pretty good epitaph for anyone.

This biography makes use primarily of Gibbes'own notes and diary, so that the reader must look elsewhere for historical insight into his life, but nevertheless it does a nice job telling the story of a quiet, somewhat limited man who was a good servant and friend.

5 out of 5 stars historical and fascinating!.......2004-09-08

I enjoyed this book tremendously! It is a real page turner! It follows the incredible life and circumstances of M r. Gibbes, tutor to the last Russian imperial family until his death. Very precise, well researched, with many new facts and information. It is also beautifully written. Will please all the devotees of the Romanov family,as well as all those who enjoy a great story!

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Fibonacci Numbers for younger readers.......2002-08-27

This book is well-crafted and interesting. It should hold the interest of all beginners in this topic.

It is not without its faults, however. As discussed in my book Fractals in Music, the analysis of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony as based on Fibonacci numbers is not correct.

        5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2002-02-06

I found this book full of very interesting data for a math report. I loved the bit on the comparison between the piano and Fibonacci numbers. Truly amazig. It has a lot of cool facts..

5 out of 5 stars This was a pleasant surprise as a gift to me........2000-07-14

I received this unexpectantly. I enjoyed this thoroughly. I would recommend this to any one who is new to the concept of Math and Music being related and needing a rather easy and non complex explanation. The author diagrams nicely the examples with the explanations. I really think this book would be good a text book in either a high school music or math course in the history of the subject. Thank you to the person who knew me well enough to give this to me. I like this book so much that I almost read it cover to cover in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars A real eye opener on how math affects more than you thought........1999-03-06

This book was one of the handiest and dandiest things I've ever read. It's extremely interesting, so long as you know what you're talking about. If you're not in a high level of mathematic capabilities, a lot of this will seem like junk that is interesting, but you have no clue how it works. It reveals some of the most interesting phonomena I've ever heard of, such as the flicker noise. Scaling fractals, harmonies of the worlds. This is what got me interested in astrophisics. It's a great book. Read it, live it, love it.
