Book Description
What happens when history is interpreted and disseminated by movies, TV, comic books and other popular media? An impassioned and original analysis of rival transmissions of the past.
Despite predictions of the death of the past and the end of history, the past refuses to go away. In fact, the start of the twenty-first century has seen an upsurge of interest in popular representations of history on the large and small screen, and of impassioned political conflicts over rival understandings of the past. Historical responsibility and apology have become contentious topics of domestic politics and of international diplomatic relations, and memory a profitable commodity for sale to mass markets. Against this background, how do historians deal with the problems of the search for historical truth?
The Past Within Us approaches these issues by examining the problems of representing history in the popular media. Drawing on examples from East Asian and American as well as European history, it poses the question: What happens when accounts of history are transferred from one medium to another? How far does the medium shape the message? How can historians deploy contemporary media in ways which evoke and develop the historical imagination?
From the romances of Walter Scott to Steven Spielberg blockbusters, from online Irish nationalism to Japanese revisionist comic books, The Past Within Us explores some of the more dramatic modern popular representations and reflects on the key challenges and possibilities for the communication of history in a multimedia age.
From The Past Within Us: To understand how knowledge of the past is communicated in an age of mass media, it becomes necessary to understand something of the way in which conventions have been formed, and the way in which they shape the stories that can be told about the past. Each medium has its own history, its own conventions, its own store of memories. Our understandings of events like the rise of Hitler or the outbreak of the Korean War depend not just on who is telling the story but also on whether we encounter the story in a history textbook, as a historical novel, a collection of photographs, a TV documentary or a feature film.

Book Description
Job interviews can be intimidating affairs. The corporate world is a very competitive place and it is no longer good enough just to display expertise in a chosen field. The prospective employee must also be able to market themself successfully and demonstrate skills in management, problem solving, creativity and intelligence.
In interviews you will also often be given puzzles to solve and the answers to these are not always straightforward - indeed, sometimes there won't even be an answer! If the interviewee isn't primed for such experiences they can be very daunting and lead to a below par performance.
Boost Your Interview Test Performance will familiarise readers with the type of testing given by employers to prospective employees. Such tests measure aptitude, intelligence quotient (IQ), creativity, problem solving, perception and personality. They identify not only candidates who appear to be well suited to the job on offer but also those who display the potential for developing their career within the company and achieving success in a business environment.
Boost Your Interview Test Performance is the ideal book to assess and improve business potential and to aid climbing the corporate ladder.
Philip Carter is an expert in the field of psychometric analysis and has authored several books dedicated to this type of testing, including aptitude tests, personality tests, problem solving and creativity. He is also puzzle editor of Enigmasig, the newsletter of the British Mensa Special interest puzzle group.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-04-23
Very interesting and practical book in RFID. I learned a lot from this book.
Awesome book!.......2007-03-18
Every project is explained in details. It has also many pictures. Great book for beginners and amateurs. I recommend it.
For people with plenty of free time..........2006-06-27
This book as the name suggests explores the concepts of RFID through projects. This book is excellent for people who have free time and would like to get some hands on with RFID. However, all the projects require the kit which is another $90. If you do not have time for all this, like me then this book is probably a waste of time.
Definitely not suited for a degreed engineer..........2006-06-23
This book is pretty much worthless if you are looking for any sort of detailed technical content or information regarding to RFID applications and 'how it works'.
If you are looking for a few 'cookbook' projects to try out then this is kind of good for that, but still not overly impressive.
The author is definitely not an engineer and is just an amature trying to spread some vague information about an technology subject that is much more complicated than is explained in this book.
Buying this book is not a wise of money, in my opinion!
A must have for every computer geek.......2006-05-22
I'm doing some projects with RFID and came across this book at the bookstore. After reading it, and trying out a few projects, I have to say this is by far one of the coolest books I have ever purchased.
The projects are straightforward, and the author lists where to purchase all the parts needed. Additionally, the author gives you the source code to help with the development of applications that use the devices!
If you are a geek, buy this book!

We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families: Stories from Rwanda
ASIN: 0299204944 |
Book Description
Though the world was stunned by the horrific massacres of Tutsi by the Hutu majority in Rwanda beginning in April 1994, there has been little coverage of the reprisals that occurred after the Tutsi gained political power. During this time hundreds of thousands of Hutu were systematically hunted and killed.
Surviving the Slaughter: The Ordeal of a Rwandan Refugee in Zaire is the eyewitness account of Marie Béatrice Umutesi. She tells of life in the refugee camps in Zaire and her flight across 2000 kilometers on foot. During this forced march, far from the world’s cameras, many Hutu refugees were trampled and murdered. Others died from hunger, exhaustion, and sickness, or simply vanished, ignored by the international community and betrayed by humanitarian organizations. Amidst this brutality, day-to-day suffering, and desperate survival, Umutesi managed to organize the camps to improve the quality of life for women and children.
In this first-hand account of inexplicable brutality, day-to-day suffering, and survival, Marie Béatrice Umutesi sheds light on a backlash of violence that targeted the Hutu refugees of Rwanda after the victory of the Rwandan Patriotic Front in 1994. Umutesi’s documentation of the flight and terror of these years provides the world a veritable account of a history that is still widely unknown. After translations from its original French into three other languages, this important book is available in English for the first time. It is more than a testimony to the lives and humanity lost; it is a call for those politicians, military personnel, and humanitarian organizations responsible for the atrocious crimes—and the devastating silence—to be held accountable.
Customer Reviews:
A Tale of Disposable People.......2004-12-08
I love this book but I am sickened by its content. I'm willing to bet that few people reading "Surviving the Slaughter" have ever had a bad year that adds up to just one day of Marie Beatrice Umutesi's many bad days depicted in this memoir. This is the story of the incredible hardship and endless courage and stamina of a lone woman who, miraculously, lived to tell her tale.
Why didn't we in the USA know more about this genocide? In New York City I am surrounded by the "survivors" of the WTC attack on 9/11/01 and constantly assaulted by their self-serving weeping and wailing. If one half the population of New York City had died on 9/11/01 the numbers would begin to equal the slaughter of this one genocide in Rwanda. Reading this book definitely gives the reader a context within which to judge the relative impact and importance of current events.
Having read my share of translations I must tip my hat to Julia Emerson for bringing this memoir to the attention of the English speaking world by making such a clear, readable and intelligent translation.
And this was before AIDS.......2004-11-24
At one time an African nation composed of two large tribes has a slaughter, a genocide. The people in power, let's call them Tribe 1, decided to eliminate the Tribe 2. A few years later Tribe 2 has gained power so began the slaughter/genocide of Tribe 1.
In this book Tribe 1 is the Huto, Tribe 2 is the Tutsi. Unfortunately this is a story so often repeated that the names almost do not matter. This could have been any of a number of countries.
And the countries do not have to be in Africa. We had the Holocaust in Germany, Ethnic Clensing in what was left of Yugoslavia. We've had people seemingly going nuts as they did in China's Cultural Revolution. And then there are places like Israel, Northern Ireland and oh so many more.
The story though keeps coming back to Africa. Taking place in the mid 1990's, this is a story of Africa, its leadership, such as it is. And it's a story of Africa before AIDS.
The story in this book is a story of the survival of a Huto woman at the hands of the Tutsi. It's a story of struggle against terrible odds -- and she made it.
A story of incredible courage and humanity.......2004-11-04
This is the tragic and triumphant autobiography of a Rwandan Hutu woman who, after living for a couple of years as an internally displaced person in Rwanda and then surviving the horrific conditions in the camps that were - illegally - set up in by the UN in Zaire within shelling distance of the Rwandan border and further down the road in the death camp at Tingi Tingi, decided, along with tens of thousands of others to try to escape from the murderous attacks of Kagame's RPF, UN bounty hunters and Kabila's troops by taking to the roads in an effort to find a way out of the country. She took around ten children, none of them her own, with her and tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to keep them alive during months of trekking through trackless tropical forests during the rainy season, walking barefoot on blistering roads, eating whatever they could scavenge in the deserted villages along the way.
We have heard a lot about the tragedy of the Tutsi genocide in 1994. What we haven't heard, partly because the press has been manipulated by the current Tutsi regime in Rwanda and partly because the U. S. continues to count on Kagame to keep our access open to the minerals in Congo - particularly coltan, which is used in cell phones and computers - is that as many Hutu as Tutsi have been killed both before and after 1994. Books like "We Wish to Inform You that Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families" by Philip Gourevitch were highly misleading and only served to reinforce the mistaken view that all Hutu were genocidal and all Tutsi innocent victims, and as a result the world has let at least 750,000 innocent Hutu be slaughtered while their killers enjoy impunity. And that is not even counting the 3,000,000 Congolese who have died.
The first chapters of the book give an overview of the history Rwanda and life in the camps, and the rest of it deals with Umutesi's trek across Zaire. It is even handed, understated, immensely powerful and very timely. It was published in French, Spanish, Catalan and Dutch before being translated into English.

Strong book, study and succeed.......2007-04-25
I studied only from this book, and got an 800 on the test even though my world history class failed to cover most of the material and I had to learn it from scratch. This book will give you the tools you need to succeed-add hard work and stir for a good score.
The only downside is that I wish there were more practice questions at the end of the review sections, because it's sometimes hard to know if you've really mastered the right material.
Worst World History SAT Book I've Seen.......2006-09-24
I bought this book out of hope for a supplement to the official guide. However, the tests in this book deviate drastically from the official tests and the collegeboard book on world history and U.S. history. It focuses very much (about 10% of all questions) on post-WWII history, while that portion of history merely represents around 1% of the real test.
I would advise people who are looking at this Kaplan book to consider other options, especially the official one. I haven't used the Princeton Review one yet but Barrons is another option.

Book Description
Mastering the art of communicating scientific information is more critical than ever for a successful career in science and technology. Scientists today must be able to effectively convey sophisticated information to a broad audience that may include students, colleagues around the world, regulatory bodies, granting agencies, legislators, and the lay public. In this engaging and lively book, the author provides a step-by-step guide to the complete process of making a scientific presentation from preparation to delivery. It offers numerous examples highlighting what to follow and what to avoid. This revised edition covers the effective use of PowerPoint and other computer-based presentation programs. It also includes a handy checklist, new illustrations, and tips on handling an audience in a foreign country.
Customer Reviews:
Must read for Ph.D. students!.......2002-08-29
There are many fine books that cover presentation skills. However, there are far fewer books that cover this topic as it specifically relates to graduate science research. Robert Anholt has done a wonderful job in this regard. Furthermore, this book has received rave reviews from many Ph.D.s with whom we have talked.
required reading.......2000-09-29
We use this book in a seminar course for seniors majoring in chemistry. When I first saw it, I realized that it neatly summarized everything I had learned about giving an effective presentation. I think it's a great resource for science professionals and students
I dazzled (thanks to this book).......2000-05-12
Anholt covers everything you need to know about making a good scientific presentation (in any discipline)- how to structure a talk, how to present your data (on slides or overhead transparencies), how to use body language, how to answer audience questions. He illustrates his tips with real-life examples (photos and drawings) and amusing anecdotes, so you can see the logic behind his suggestions and know what to avoid doing too. The section on poster presentations was very helpful-- it includes a drawing of a real poster so that you can see an example of a good layout. The book is well-organized, easy to follow, and has really helped me avoid so many of the pitfalls that commonly plague science presentations.
