In true rags-to-riches fashion, James Autry's Confessions of an Accidental Businessman recounts his inspirational climb from childhood struggle to installation as a Fortune 500 executive. In his 31 years at magazine publisher Meredith Corporation, Autry juggled his own ambitions with a desire to be a fair and sensitive leader. His honest and open memoir exposes the good as well as the bad and paints an intriguing picture of the changes wrought in corporate America during his tenure.

Book Description

This business autobiography of a corporate executive relates the management and leadership lessons which Autry, a Fortune 500 executive, has learned on his way to the top. according to Autry, knowing what to do is only part of becoming a leader; the only part is knowing how to be.

3 out of 5 stars A good read.......2001-03-20

I have to admit. It was the title that caught my attention and sucked me into the sale. My initial reaction was "Here we go...another business guy attempting to make his mark in self-mythology."

But then I opened the book, read a few pages and discovered that the book was not quite as pretentious as I thought it would be. In fact, the stories are both endearing and enlightening. As he recollects his rags to riches history, he shows that (contrary to popular opinion) there is a human side to business. He uses his own life, mistakes and victories to teach some fairly profound lessons about life in the office...and just life in general. He even dares to incriminate himself as he reveals much about the corporate attitude towards women in the workplace.

It's certainly worth reading. And though I'm nowhere near the status of successful business man...it's nice to know how the other side is actually thinking.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-03-14

Rarely does a book live up to the glowing blurbs on its front and back covers. This one does. James A. Autry, former president of Meredith Corp.'s Magazine Group (home of Better Homes & Gardens, among others) has written a searingly honest, heartfelt, often amusing autobiography with plenty of insights into the business of journalism, business in general, corporate culture and what it takes to be a manager and a leader. Between chapters, Autry includes many of his poems (he's had two poetry books published). Many chapters include management advice from the wisdom that he's accumulated. His counsel rises above most of what you read in popular management and how-to books, and his writing style is lively, as one would expect from a former journalist and editor. We at getAbstract recommend this book to readers in all business areas and to anyone who wants an inside glimpse of the magazine industry, or of the real workings of high-level management.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Reflection from a CEO.......2000-08-23

I have loved many books, but there are few that caused me to grieve when I turned to the final page and had to deal with the end of an emotional journey. This book, which Jim Autry mistakenly refers to as his memoirs, is a touching and revealing look deep into his heart. Considering his success, he could have told a story of brilliance, strong and motivating leadership, and a life of success. But this man, whose soul awakened deep in the American south, would have considered that dishonest. Instead he traces his life, revealing his failures and inadequacies along with his joys and success. This work is so self-revealing, I often felt as though I was privy to those reflections a man typically shares only with himself.

The subtitle of this book is, It Takes a Lifetime to Find Wisdom. Luckily for me, my life has been enriched immeasurably by Jim Autry's gift for profound reflection.

A gutsy woman's tale of marrying the Chief Mate of a mammoth containership and sailing the seas with today's modern mariners.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A good personal narrative, but not flawless.......2002-03-06

I found this book strangely unfocused: part romance, part travelogue, part history, part sociology, and several other things as well. Nancy Allen is a skilled writer and observer, but it didn't seem to me that the various parts of this book always knitted together well.

For a 'honeymoon,' I came away knowing some of the other crew members of the M/V Sea-Land Endurance better than I knew Nancy's new husband Bob, the Chief Mate. For the rest of the 'adventure,' the author relates what she saw, in her role as 'supernumerary, ' with style and immediacy. But the picture of the life of the modern merchant mariner still felt somewhat incomplete.

High points of the book were Nancy's descriptions of foreign ports; her enlightening discussions with female crew members and with Keith, the radio operator; her visits to the stern of the ship (in the midst of a storm) and the engine room; and her discussion of issues of foreign flagging, unions, and the impact of regulation. The typographic decision to print excerpts from Nancy's journal in italics was somewhat annoying: page after page of italicized type can get hard on the eyes.

Personally, I thought the foreword by former Maritime Administrator Albert J. Herberger was pretty much useless -- though it could have been his kiss-up to Bill Clinton that turned me off. But then, who expects much from forewords anyway?

Despite its weaknesses, this was not a bad read, and I recommend it for anyone interested in true-life sea stories and the American merchant marine. At its best, it's highly personal and told with great style. Despite the hyperbolic dust jacket copy, it's not quite 'a saga of the sea and the modern mariners who sail it.' It's more like a conversation with a friend than a latter-day Melville. And there's nothing wrong with that.

    4 out of 5 stars A maritime love story I couldn't put down........1999-06-26

I thank Nancy Allen for writing her story about life on an American Flag cargo vessel. Her husband, Bob Allen is stuck in the same position my father was in during the 60's - that is - sailing as a Chief Mate with a Masters license. It must have been difficult for Nancy to see the time and dedication her husband puts in while on-board ship and the frustration he must feel being responsible for almost everything and not being in charge. Bob Allen is in love with the sea and Ms. Allen followed the man she loves and wrote a great story about the places and people that make up the world of a disappearing US Flag Merchant Fleet.

4 out of 5 stars Well written look inside the world of todays supercargo ship.......1999-04-13

I have been involved with the sea for almost thirty years. I read Fair Seafarer and learned quite a thing of two about life on an American flagged efficient cargo vessel.Nancy, the author, told the tale of her voyage and a voyage through the Merchant Marine service with great style. It is a book that you might even read wothout putting it down. Believe me, she is right on target with the problems that plague American crews. Shares with us the joys of the voyage from her unique perspective as the Chief Mates wife, along for quite a ride.

4 out of 5 stars a wealth of information on a heretofore unknown subject.......1997-12-05

An illuminating book on the motivation of an iconoclastic lifestyle in this technological age. The authors enthusiasm is projected to the reader and carries you along her serendipitous journey.

4 out of 5 stars A good read for the dedicated military historian.......2001-03-02

This book is not meant for the casual reader. However, if you are a serious history buff and don't mind engaging a book intellectually this is a good book to spend some time with. I had the pleasure of having John Shy as a professor at the University of Michigan. I have nothing but positive feedback on his scholarly work. The somewhat narrow scope of the book's topic and the assumed background knowledge might deter a casual reader. History buff who wants to dig deeper into Revolutionary War issues? Then this book is a good one to pick up!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read...must have for any Military History buffs.......2000-11-13

This was a nice collection of intelligent and well written essays on the American Revolution. I chose this book based on a recommendation from my history teacher. It was a requirement to write a book review on it.

This book contains a great amount of information on the American Revolution. The author seems to have done much pain-staking research to bring details to life. Unlike a traditional history book, this book focuses on specific aspects of the Revolution. It brings to light much of went on militaristically and socially on both sides of the ocean during that time. If you have ever wanted to know more about the American Revolution then what you learn in College or High School US History, this book is a must have. It is written on an academic level and requires a high degree of English comprehension.

      Overall an enjoyable experience.

This is a great book for all Eartdawn fans. The book is wery throughout, and covers a lot of difrent aspect. From the early history of the Throal kingdom to the dayly life of the common dwarf. The difrent fractions, noble houses and important caracters is also introduced. The book has a lot of small adventuring ideas, and that is great for giving your players a feeling with the kingdom. I have rated it 5 starts, because it is a tresure trove of information.

The Guide helped me play and enjoy the game! I hate getting stuck in a game, not knowing what to do next! This game guide helped me get past these spots!

5 out of 5 stars A Million Times Better than the Tales of Symphonia Guide.......2006-03-15

BradyGAMES learned from their mistake with the Tales of Symphonia guide. The Tales of Legendia guide is helpful, detailed, and makes it a point to cover as much as possible.

The guide begins with the game basics. If you're pretty new to the game, or the Tales series, the game basics will help you get on your feet and keep you from falling over. It's brutally detailed (perhaps too detailed at times). Giving you the low down from the basic controls, to the complexity of the battle system. By helping you get to know the battle system I'm not kidding. They even go as far as to show you how to get the best Grade possible!

After the exhaustive game basics, we get into the characters section. Here the guide gives you the low-down on every character. All the different Eres they use, Compound Eres and all the titles they can amount to. They do this for each and every character.

Afterwards we get to the walkthrough, which has shown the most improvement over the Tales of Symphonia guide. Let me first tell you that there actually ARE maps. They're pretty detailed maps too, and they're very easy to use. The walkthrough is divided into chapters. For each subsection in a chapter, there's a an objectives list. Not only do they tell you what you need to do, but they point out on the map where it is you're going to do it. The guide also has some good overall puzzle solutions and strategies. The boss strategies aren't so bad either, they work well at leading you to victory. It's also nice to see that when entering a new area they actually told you what enemies are there and they provided an HP statistic as well as weaknesses. The walkthrough is easy to use, gets to the point (most times, they do have a tendency to say things like, "There are a few story events that take place..." which is, of course something a guide shouldn't have to tell us). If you're someone who doesn't like spoilers, this guide doesn't spoil the story for you. It's a guide that tells you what to do, but is still willing to let you cross the street on your own.

After the walkthrough we get into the character quests section. This section is, by and large, laid out exactly as the walkthrough. In fact, it's more or less a continuation of the walkthrough.

Tales of Legendia has a ton of sidequests and this guide will help you out on all of them. While the guide doesn't really do a fantastic job of telling you just WHEN the quest is availible, it does a pretty good job giving you a basic overview of how to do it. So I forgave it in this sense.

The Bestiary is where I have one of my first major gripes with the guide. If you decide to use the bestiary, there's a lot of page flipping involved. The bestiary is grouped by a monsters families. Which means it's alright when you know where to find the family, but if you don't... there's a lot of flipping to be done. The guide calls out the families at least, which is good (unlike other guides that sort of umm... forget). However, I could've been more productive with it had it been in alphabetical order.

After the bestiary you've got all those appendices. Items lists, Recipes, customization and even characters skits and how to get them. They're really good overall (especially the recipes).

If you're skeptical about buying this guide because of how terrible the Tales of Symphonia guide was (if you need a reminder, just check out the reviews), allow me to dispel any fear of this being a bad guide. For what it's worth, it's a good guide. It's helpful. The only REALLY big issue I had with it was that in all the detail and careful attention they gave the walkthrough and other areas... they didn't include a world map. An RPG guide does needs a world map. In a game as big as Tales of Legendia, a world map would've been very helpful. Overall, though, I was much more impressed with this guide than I thought I would be. So if you're having trouble with Tales of Legendia, grab this guide. It'll help you in the long run.

Fleeing a generally bleak existence in Nicaragua, Yamileth shepherds her sister's children and her son Miguel over a treacherous route to California. She reaches Los Angeles in 1989 as the local economy sours and outcry against illegal immigrants like themselves swells. A Sandinista supporter who fought for a new life in Nicaragua, she is nonplussed by everyday violence in the U.S. Worries about the children, difficulty finding work, and the threat of deportation darken her dreams of a safe haven. Dianne Walta Hart, her unofficial American sponsor, weaves together Yamileth's words with commentary pointing up inevitable culture clashes. This is a rough-edged, authentic look at the marginal lives led by many illegal immigrants who live among us.

        Book Description

Yamileth's own words. From start to finish, Undocumented in L.A.: An Immigrant's Story is testimonial literature at its best. This eye-opening work will show the reader the opposition and difficulties undocumented immigrants face in a nation that at first beckons them with freedom, then rejects them with unwelcoming borders and restrictive laws. Undocumented in L.A.: An Immigrant's Story is an excellent resource for courses in immigration, political science, and social and cultural studies.

        Customer Reviews:

        1 out of 5 stars Unprofessional; Inaccessible.......2002-11-11

I was required to read this book for a course I'm currently taking in college. I have seldom seen such a sloppy, unprofessional, inaccessible work such as I did upon reading this particular work.

The content of the narrative itself is unremarkable; Hart recounts the tale of Yamileth and her family members, virtually all of whom are undocumented (a euphemism for 'illegal') immigrants in the United States.

I saw no compelling reasons whatsoever for the existence of this book. One of the hallmarks of documentary nonfiction is ostensibly objectivity, a professional detachment from the subject. There is none of that here. Hart is herself involved intimately with Yamileth's life, and liberally narrates her own actions throughout the course of the text. Hart's continued non-intervention (and in fact, implicit encouragement) of the numerous acts of illegal immigration throughout the text is unsettling, if not outright disturbing.

Hart maintains a unnecessarily loyal relationship with the oral history she performs; the salient narrative is presented entirely in extremely unnecessary quotation marks, apparently in an effort to bring about a sense of intimacy. This effort, unfortunately, fails miserably. I found the text immensely inaccessible, and the slavish devotion to verbatim dictation extremely off-putting. I saw no reason whatsoever for Hart's act of essentially presenting an annotated transcription of her interview. My only hypothesis would be laziness, but again, Hart's gratuitous editorial commentary appears to contradict that particular possibility.

Given the paucity of compelling subject matter (Yamileth's story is neither unique nor extraordinary), Hart deserves some measure of acknowledgement for not only writing this book, but also for getting it published.

Had Hart chosen a more objective, narrative format (The Autobiography of Malcolm X, another text I read in the same course, is a superb example), her message would have been vastly more credible, as well as entertaining to read. Hart's narrative seems forced; Hart's numerous editorial comments lend an air of artificiality, and give a sense of desperation, or 'padding the text,' if you will.

Hart lacks the academic credentials for conducting oral history projects, and this fact is readily evident throughout the text. The narrative is in fact extremely boring, as a great deal of text is wasted on the trivial details of Yamileth's daily life. Yamileth herself comes across as a strange character; many of the actions she takes throughout the text would very kindly be described as 'misguided' if not outright stupid. The greatest example of this is her decision to leave Oregon (where she had a satisfying job, and her son was truly happy), and return to live with her manipulative sister in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, she is jobless and unhappy, and her son even more so. Perhaps even more confusing is her ultimate decision to return to Nicaragua, which in some senses proves to be even worse than Los Angeles. Yamileth comes across as consistently indecisive, as well as impractical. Her dithering would be acceptable were she only by herself, but her continued decisions to deny her son happiness and stability in life reek of irresponsibility, as well as juvenility.

In short, Yamileth doesn't know what she wants with life, and in her continued half-fulfilled plans she manages to drag her children down with her. Similarly, Hart doesn't know what she wants to do with this book. I in fact fail to see why anybody would read this out of their own volition. To anyone else taking the same class as I am now (I wish to remain anonymous, but suffice to say I attend a prestigious school in Northern California) - don't worry...it gets better from here on.

        5 out of 5 stars Yamileth: A Sojourner.......1999-12-21

I highly recommend this book. It is a joy to read the story of a Nicaraguan lady who makes a journey with members of her family. The destination is the U.S.; the length of stay is short term. As Yamileth will tell you, plans don't always come out the way they were intended. The heroine of the book is a woman, mother, and activist, who has strong family values supported by age old ideals, and who has the courage to live them. The best feature of "Undocumented in L.A." is that it is apolitical. The ideals to which Yamileth is commited and her ways of expressing them are delightful. Through her clear reasoning I was able to have a clearer understanding of the immigrant experience without all the media hype or the outragious editorialization. In the retelling of Yamileth's saga, we are also given an insider's view of foreign relations, inter-racial conflicts, and the divisions of labor in a household where all the occupants are "Undocumented in L. A." "For me the future is thinking about tomorrow and preparing yourself for it. The only heritage a parent can leave is the intellectual preparation of a child... An education allows them to fight for survival, wherever they go. No one can take away that inheritance."--one of Yamileth's values.

5 out of 5 stars Better understanding of plight of illegal immigrants in U.S........1997-10-19

With government looking for ways to limit rights of immigrants in California, Dianne Walta Hart's newest book is very timely. Ms. Hart has culled her interviews with a Nicaraguan woman to tell the immigrant's side of the situation.

Ms. Hart's first book, Thanks to God and the Revolution: The Oral History of a Nicaraguan Family (1990) introduced 4 members of the Lopez family, who described their difficult life in Nicaragua during the revolution. Each family member presented his view of their attempts to survive in a society where employment is difficult to find and the life style is meager. The closeness of the Nicaraguans within their families and neighborhoods is a contrast to the American individualism.

Ten years later, Yamileth and her son Miguel are living as undocumented immigrants in L.A. Through the interviews, their difficulty of survival in a new land is apparent. Again, the close family ties and cultural values weigh heavily on the decisions to be made in their lives.

In T. Coraghessan Boyle's The Tortilla Curtain, the reader meets Mexical illegal immigrants who go to great lengths to find work and take care of themselves in a foreign land. One might discount these characters as fictional and idealized, but the true story Ms. Hart presents shows the actual extreme efforts made by hard working illegal aliens who wish to survive and to find a better life. The stories present people who will not eat a meal if they have not contributed or earned it; people who are honorable and will not always choose the easiest way. Decisions which seem plain to an American do not always fit with the cultural responsibility felt by a person from another country. This book helps one better understand the plight of illegal immigrants in the United States.

          Book Description

Latinos are now the largest so-called minority group in the United States -- the result of a growth trend that began in the mid-twentieth century -- and the influence of Latin cultures on American life is reflected in everything from politics to education to mass cultural forms such as music and television. Yet very few volumes have attempted to analyze or provide a context for this dramatic historical development. The Columbia History of Latinos in the United States Since 1960 is among the few comprehensive histories of Latinos in America. This collaborative, interdisciplinary volume provides not only cutting-edge interpretations of recent Latino history, including essays on the six major immigrant groups (Mexicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Central Americans, and South Americans), but also insight into the major areas of contention and debate that characterize Latino scholarship in the early twenty-first century.

This much-needed book offers a broad overview of this era of explosive demographic and cultural change by exploring the recent histories of all the major national and regional Latino subpopulations and reflecting on what these historical trends might mean for the future of both the United States and the other increasingly connected nations of the Western Hemisphere. While at one point it may have been considered feasible to explore the histories of national populations in isolation from one another, all of the contributors to this volume highlight the deep transnational ties and interconnections that bind different peoples across national and regional lines. Thus, each chapter on Latino national subpopulations explores the ambiguous and shifting boundaries that so loosely define them both in the United States and in their countries of origin. A multinational perspective on important political and cultural themes -- such as Latino gender systems, religion, politics, expressive and artistic cultures, and interactions with the law -- helps shape a realistic interpretation of the Latino experience in the United States.

            Book Description

Edgar Cayce, America's best-documented psychic, predicted a shift of the Earth's poles sometime between 1998 and 2001. In this book, geologist William Hutton compares this prediction with the latest geophysical research findings, which appear to show that Cayce's prophecy is on the verge of coming true. An entire section focuses on what destroyed the lost continent of Atlantis and the possibility that portions of it are rising again!

2 out of 5 stars help the axis of evil has shifted!!!.......2007-02-11

the problem wiht psychic prediction is that they can often be a bit 'symbolic'. Maybe Cayce was getting his metaphors mixed and was forseeing the drastic change in political climate from the 'axis of evil? shiftin!!!.
i guess it keeps me entertained!

i don't need a psychic to tell me that. But if you need one apparently the next opportunity to be proved right is in 2012.

1 out of 5 stars The sky is falling!.......2004-06-16

According to this fascinating, and well-researched book, the planet Earth is about to suffer a shift in the axis of its rotation, which will cause catastrophic damage. Worst of all, this shift is unavoidable, and will occur BEFORE the end of 2001.

            Oh...wait a minute...never mind.

On second thought, don't buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Unprecedented Analysis of Cayce's Earth Change Readings.......2000-07-17

In this book, author William Hutton analyzes Edgar Cayce's startling psychic predictions for coming earth changes. As a degreed geologist and student of Cayce, I found the author's careful analysis of earth change readings the most complete and scientific ever documented. Cayce spoke of upheavals in Utah, Nevada, and southern California which conform to what we now know about seismo-tectonics in these areas. This information was developed by geoscientists years after Cayce gave his "readings" for the western region.

Some of Cayce's more catastrophic predictions suggest that "Los Angeles, San Francisco, most all of these will be among those that will be destroyed before New York even." Under "most all of these" apparently vulnerable places Hutton describes what can happen to the cities of the northwestern states, like Seattle and Portland, if Earth's tectonic plates suddenly accelerate in their movement in response to a pole shift. Here again, the author draws upon the latest geophysical information to explain how such predictions are not only possible, but probable, should Cayce's pole shift occur.

Possible physical, mental, and spiritual causes of potential Earth changes are covered as well. This book is perhaps the most thorough analysis of Cayce's earth change readings ever written and is well worth a careful read by anyone curious about the psychic's predictions for our planet.

4 out of 5 stars Scientist Says We Are At The Brink Of A Pole Shift.......2000-07-15

According to this book, the many Earth changes that were predicted in Cayce's psychic readings will be occuring soon (before the end of 2001). They will be due to the beginning of a shift in Earth's poles. Mr. Hutton believes that the poles cannot shift more than about 10 degrees, but that the mechanism of pole shift will be able to move units of the crust of the Earth up and down, to the point of causing parts of Atlantis to rise off the East coast and parts of Lemuria, another "lost continent," to rise in the Pacific. He refers to evidence from modern geology studies that indicate that both continents once existed. The author carefully documents Cayce's record of past successful predictions of Earth changes, including earthquakes in California. Some of the predictions sound extreme, by historical standards. But they are fascinating nonetheless. Imagine part of New York being submerged, San Francisco and Los Angeles destroyed, and the greater portion of Japan submerged beneath the Pacific. The spiritual answers to such events are treated also by Hutton in this interesting and informative book. One also is forced by Hutton to think about how we humans, as spritual beings who have fallen asleep in materiality, may be hastening our own demise here at the beginning of a new millennium, and what role esoteric teachings might have in our modifying the worst Earth change events.

              Book Description

This is the first book to provide a truly global synthesis of knowledge on river conservation, and will be an invaluable reference for all those concerned with strategic river planning. Throughout the world, river ecosystems frequently reflect the worst excesses of human exploitation for instance when rivers are used as repositories for waste. Recognition is growing that river management needs to move from chemical clean-up to restoring the structural damage caused by decades of river engineering. There needs to be a catchment-wide perspective if the needs of human populations, river habitats and wildlife are to reach a sustainable balance. Against this backdrop, the development of river conservation strategies has become a global imperative.

This book sets out a worldwide, region-by-region overview of the science, policy and practice of river conservation. It also provides a topical review of different river settings (such as tropical/temperate; temporary/perennial; large/small) and contemporary issues in river conservation (such as classification and evaluation; environmental legislation; the role of public participation).

Clearly written by leading researchers in the field, this book will be welcomed by all those working on environmental management of inland waters as well as academics, researchers, postgraduates and final year undergraduates.
