Book Description
At the age of eighty, one of the most influential yet reclusive intellectuals of the twentieth century consented to his first interviews in nearly thirty years. Hailed by Le Figaro as "an event," the resulting conversations between Claude Lévi-Strauss and Didier Eribon (a correspondent for Le Nouvel Observateur) reveal the great anthropologist speaking of his life and work with ease and humor.
Now available in English, the conversations are rich in Lévi-Strauss's candid appraisals of some of the best-known figures of the Parisian intelligentsia: surrealists André Breton and Max Ernst, with whom Lévi-Strauss shared a bohemian life in 1940s Manhattan; de Beauvoir, Sartre, and Camus, the stars of existentialism; Leiris, Foucault, Dumézil, Jacob, Lacan, and others. His long friendships with Jakobson and Merleau-Ponty are recalled, as well as his encounters with prominent figures in American anthropology: Lowie, Boas (who suddenly died in his chair beside Lévi-Strauss at a banquet at Columbia University), Benedict, Linton, Mead, and Kroeber.
Lévi-Strauss speaks frankly about how circumstances and his own inclinations, after his early fieldwork in Brazil, led him to embrace theoretical work. His straightforward answers to Eribon's penetrating questions—What is a myth? What is structuralism? Are you a philosopher?—clarify his intellectual motives and the development of his research; his influential role as an administrator, including the founding of the Laboratory of Social Anthropology and of the journal L'Homme; the course of his writings, from Elementary Structures of Kinship to The Jealous Potter; and his thoughts on the conduct of anthropology today.
Never before has Lévi-Strauss spoken so freely on so many aspects of his life: his initial failure to be elected to the Collège de France; his reaction to the events of May 1968; his regrets at not being a great investigative reporter or playwright; his deep identification with Wagner, Proust, and Rousseau. This is a rare opportunity to become acquainted with a great thinker in all his dimensions.

Not essential Levi-Strauss, but worthwhile.......2003-04-16
Didier Eribon's conversations with Claude Levi-Strauss, the father of Structural Anthropology and one of the leading intellectuals of 20th century France, are enlightening and occasionally entertaining. You get an immediate feel for Levi-Strauss's personality... and for his Gallic flair for words and ability to damn with faint praise. (His comment about how Sartre was a great mind... and proof that even great minds can talk nonsense ... comes to mind immediately).
As an interviewer, Eribon has obviously done his homework: he is familiar not only with Levi-Strauss's work but with the various reactions to same, positive and negative. He is able to quote names and dates (at times much to Levi-Strauss's chagrin...) and is conversant both in the language of Structuralism and Anthropology. He also manages to elicit many gems from Levi-Strauss, including some discussions of his early interactions with various Surrealists.
This is not an essential addition to a Levi-Strauss collection: if you want an introduction to his thought and work, you'd probably be better off reading his volumes on Mythology or his *Structural Anthropology.* If you already know something about the man ... or if you're interested in 20th century French intellectuals (and who isn't) ... you'll enjoy this book. I'd file this one under "nice to have" rather than "must have."

Arranged by movie (from Aaron Slick to Zorro) each entry includes year of release, studio, closing lines, character, and actor. In many cases, the lines have been verified against original screenplays.

Essential Book.......2006-01-16
For anyone interested in the cinema, this work is an absolutely essential reference. I am amazed that it took so long for someone to recognize the importance and significance of last lines in movies and also to collect them in one comprehensive volume. Use it as a reference book or read it for pleasure. It works admirably on both levels. A "must have" - an indispensable volume.
A good mix, but a bit of a waste.......2004-06-07
This book is what it is - a collection of the closing lines for over 3,000 films ranging through film history, and mostly English-speaking films. I was amazed at just how much the films ranged, from famous films such as "On the Waterfront" to even the lower rated films like "My Stepmother Is an Alien." They even had the last line to one of my favorite war films, "The Lighthorsemen."
However, you'd be surprised how much some of these last lines are not altogether fascinating. Mostly because they count the VERY LAST line of the film. Remember that great closing line from a certain movie? Remember you had a guy in the background coughing immediately after the line was given? Well...they would consider THAT the closing line. For example:
I had always considered "Citizen Kane" to have a great closing line, that being the monologue of the reporter talking about Rosebud was probably some thing Kane's one real happiness in life, some thing he couldn't buy. The last line recorded in this book? "Throw that junk." Yeah, you know, what the workers burning the furniture said...who the heck is gonna care about that?! I don't think audiences left theaters thinking, "Boy that Random Guy #2 really summed up the movie!" I think the writer took "closing line" a LITTLE too literally...
Another problem is sometimes the definition of a closing "line" seems to be trouble for the author. Some of the closing lines are given in their entirety...others are shortened to the last sentence. Example:
The film "12 Angry Men" ends with Henry Fonda and the old guy giving each other's names after the trial. That bears a lot of meaning because these are two men who just stood up for each other's beliefs, and they barely even knew who each other were. I remember thinking that the old man's line, where he says his name, was the last line. Apparently I was wrong, its Henry Fonda's casual "So long" as the old man walks away. Well that's wonderful.
Some of the last lines make since, such as "Goodbye Shane!" for the movie "Shane." Others annoy me though. This book is good if you're into film, but if you want some thing you can enjoy, I would suggest this be bathroom reading only.
Book Description
New book by Blake of Nomad Precision Body Adornment and Tribal Art Museum. For those interested in the traditional, tribal and cultural aspects of piercing and body mod, this book is a "must-have" according to Fakir. Packed full of historic and rare archival photos, exquisite jewelry from around the world (dating from 3,000b.c. to the present) as well as extreme tribal procedures. Required reading for piercers and enthusiasts in or out of the industry. The book traces piercing's re-emergence into western culture and showcases an amazing variety of jewelry from Ancient Europe, Mesoamerica, and Southeast Asia, to mention a few . Philosophical commentary and historical/autobiographical narrative punctuate the story of humanity's oldest practice.

blake's journey through the history of body piercing.......2004-10-18
As beauty is often said to be in the eye of the beholder, so history, it seems, is in the hand of the chronicler. This rings true of Blake's first book, A Brief History of the Evolution of Body Adornment in Western Culture: Ancient Origins and Today.
The first half of the book contains brief biographies and photo essays of several people Blake has named as heavily influencing the modern Western piercing community, in addition to other lesser-known characters important to his own history. Two early pioneers discussed, both born near the turn of the century, are Ethel Granger and the Great Omi. A thorough section with both images and words from Blake's guru Fakir is presented, followed by tributes to mentor Father Daniel Jensen and Blake's adventurous grandmother, Dr. Naomi Coval. He pays homage to these inspiring people with obvious affection and respect, as they have made a huge impact upon his life. This section has been peppered throughout with archival and artful black and white photographs of the personalities discussed, as well as color pictures from his pioneering grandmother's world travels rescued from her archives. The result is an insightful collection of memoirs, anecdotes, pictures, and quotes that combine to tell the history of body modification in the Western world as it has inspired both the industry in general and the author specifically.
The book switches gears when Blake steps in to tell his own highly personal account of his introduction and growth within the piercing industry. This autobiographical section gives the very casually written perspective of the author as he travels through the early stages of his career as a piercer. Taking credit for many advances and extremes in terms of larger piercings, he discusses freehand piercing and coins the term "tribal surgery" to describe the methods employed by himself and his colleagues.
The second half of the book contains an abridged cross-section of ethnic and historical piercing practices and jewelry from around the world. Most pieces depicted are from Blake's collection in the form of the Nomad Museum in Oregon, while select items from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and other famous museums demonstrate the prevalence of piercing practices and jewelry on all continents throughout the millennia. This section is only a brief introduction and does not delve very deeply into history, as the title suggests, primarily focusing on collectible jewelry that has survived from antiquity - though some contemporary practices and pieces are also shown.
Being quite familiar with cultural body modification practices and ethnic jewelry myself, I was wondering what new information this work would present. Unless one has passed through Bend recently to see the Nomad collections, A Brief History showcases a scrumptious array of ethnic piercing jewelry unpublished until now, cataloged here for posterity. While the anecdotes and chronology presented were primarily a useful review for me, most readers will find this an informative and easy to read introduction to the ethnographic and historic backgrounds that deserve our respect for significantly paving the way to where the practice of body art now stands.

Customer Reviews:
Still the Adwords bible.......2007-06-29
Maybe the reason people are still giving this book 5-star reviews is that it's crammed full of incredibly useful information. The 0.5% CTR limit is NOT the most important thing about Adwords, no matter what one of the other reviewers (Andreas Ramos) says. And although the limit is gone, keeping your CTR high is still critical to effective results.
It's the nature of computer books to become outdated more rapidly than most other non-fiction categories. Writing about Google is particularly tough, as they are such a rapidly moving target. However, I'd say that 95% of the advice in this book still holds. Two years after publication, that's pretty good.
Uniquely among the books in this area, Goodman writes in depth from many points of view: both the micro nuts-and-bolts stuff and the macro big-picture stuff. If you want to learn as much as you can about Adwords, get Goodman (and then Perry Marshall's book). I'm looking forward to the 2nd edition.
I got 10x more profits almost immediately from reading this book.......2007-05-16
I had been running an adword campaign for 3 months with limited success. I immediately used every tactic I could from this book and increase the quantity of terms I used, the quality of terms I used, my ad text, my landing pages, my offer.... and my Results. I almost instantly increased my Profits 10x over what I was making before this book. At the same time I dropped my cost per click from .59 to .14.
I am not a web guru. I'm not a marketing guru. I'm not a sales guru. I just read the book and did what he said to do. The real key for me was in finding seldom considered keywords that cost tons less than the obvious keywords, and still bring in the traffic. I learned it from this book
Good enough to read twice.......2006-10-31
On my way to becoming a Google Ad Specialist I have done Google's courses online and off but found that Winning Results with Google AdWords by Andrew Goodman has added a tremendous amount of context to my education. I am actually on my third time through the book in order to let the subtleties Andrew describes with respect to keyword development and optimization techniques in particular sink in.
Meaty Part is in a few chapters.......2006-08-11
I guess, that for a newbie, the entire book would be interesting, but for me, i found the meaty parts to be in part III , from chapter 6 onwards.
Readers that are running current adwords campaign can benefit greatly from the chapter on "Writing Winning Ads' and on 'Increasing Conversion Rates'
These two chapters alone is worth the price of the book
One of the best AdWords book available.......2006-07-25
This Adwords book by Andrew Goodman is probably one of the best Adwords books around and even got positive feedback from the Google Engineer Matt Cutts (at Matt Cutt's personal Blog).
The AdWords Service changes all the time which makes books about it very tough and outdated quickly. A lot of the things you can learn in this book are not specific to AdWords though. They can be applied to any PPC Service out there.
In addition to this print version would it make sense to get the new eBook from Andrew Goodman as well. The eBook is frequently updated which explains the much higher price tag than the one of this print version.

From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya: A Biographical History of Christian Missions
I got this book for some ministry training--and it's a fantastic overview of Christian Missions all over the world. You can read sections at a time & not have to read the whole thing (it's large). It gives a great fly-by of these men & women. I encourage anyone interested in missions or world evangelism to check it out.
A great overview of world missions history.......2007-03-29
I am not a history reader but choice, but this book makes it easy to track the development of the major missional keys to the advance of the gospel from Jesus to now.
A good overview of missions past and present.......2007-01-09
This is an excellent book to portray where missions began and where it is going. It is a book that my husband uses in the college classroom and is also a book that we used for devotions in our home for our older children. The long term commitment of missionaries of past eras has spoken loud and clear to us that today's method of "doing missions" has drastically changed, at times for the better and at times not so. All laymen should read this book to see what obstacles those of the past overcame. We have the same God and similar or even greater challenges in missions today but with the promise that greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world!
great history of the Church.......2006-11-05
One of the best overviews of the growth of the Church from the beginning.
Book Description
Assembling some of the finest cartographic examples from private collection of renowned map collector David Rumsey, this atlas bridges the gap between historical cartography and exploration and the new technologies and applications of geographic information systems (GIS). More than a lavish collection of cartographic masterworks, this book tells two paralled stories. The first story lays out the relevant history, the human players, and the events that place each map in the context of the time in which it was created. The second thread, of particular interest to cartographers, designers, map lovers, and geographers, tells the stories of the maps themselves--how they were created and the lessons they can teach modern cartographers and other designers of information and visual communication.

Gorgeous........2007-09-17
David Rumsey, Cartographica Extraordinaire: The Historical Map Transformed (ESRI, 2004)
This massive coffee table book is all about maps (mostly of the United States, with a few from other parts of North America thrown in for good measure) and how they change over time, not only as people discover more about the world they live in, but as progress takes its toll, measuring tools improve, etc. Simply put, it's fascinating. Rumsey's stated goal, both with this book and with his website, is to bring historical maps back into prominence as tools to understand history and change, and this is certainly a fine start. The writing (there isn't much, but what there is is always on point) is engaging, the maps are fascinating, and the book itself is quite nicely put together; given its size, I'd have expected some binding defects or the like. A wonderful piece of work, worth every penny. I wish it had gone into a little greater detail in some of the framing text, but that's hardly something to quibble over in a project of this magnitude. ****
map lovers, look out!.......2006-03-18
this is truly an extraordinary book, with excellent reproductions of all types of maps. the index provides the original map dimensions, which i found helpful. this book would be a great additional to any library, young or old.
History Through Illuminating Maps.......2004-09-16
David Rumsey was fascinated by maps as a kid, and they were always papered onto the walls of his room. The fascination with maps did not leave him, through several degrees in fine art and a career in real estate. He amassed one of the largest private collections of maps, The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection, 150,000 catalogued items stored on the ground floor of his house in San Francisco, which is a working library for people to use. The items are wall maps, folding maps, globes, map puzzles, and many others. There is a sampling of the collection in _Cartographica Extraordinaire: The Historical Map Transformed_ (ESRI Press) by David Rumsey and Edith M. Punt, a slim but large-paged, handsome volume containing all kinds of maps concentrating on North America. They show the history of America, to be sure, but are also a history of mapmaking. Rumsey has painstakingly put items in his collection on the Internet, so he himself is participating in mapmaking history, and some pages of this beautiful book demonstrate what can be done with maps transformed into pixels.
Looking at these lovely maps is to participate a bit in Rumsey's enthusiasm, which one can pick up from his introduction: "A map, especially a historical map, ... communicates both above and below the narrow bands of language and observation." There are only a hundred and twenty or so maps selected here, but besides being beautiful objects to contemplate, they show an amazingly diverse range of ideas: how people explored coasts, or how train schedules were arranged before we had standard time zones, or how we claimed, organized, and sold the land. For those of us who only look at highway maps, there is an enormous education here. It is barely possible to mention the subjects of some of these maps; if this subject matter at all interests you, nothing will do except to get the book itself and look through the pages. For instance, the map by William Clark (of Lewis and Clark) of the trek across western America is here, but in a version issued by Rumsey in celebration of the 200th anniversary of their travels. It shows the original drawing, seamlessly enclosed within the General Land Survey's first map of the area, which is itself within a 1971 map of a US Geographic Survey National Atlas, which in turn is within a Landsat mosaic from NASA. The joins of the maps are seamless because they all were turned into computer data that could be massaged in just the right way, and because they are "georectified" to match up perfectly. This was hardest to do with Clark's 1814 map, which because of survey and navigation limitations of his time (not because of sloppy mapmaking) had accurate latitudes and distorted longitudes.
Rumsey's collection exists physically, of course, but access to the historical maps entailed the basic problem of "many hands taking hold of rare and delicate objects." Digital photography and computer storage have opened his collection for anyone who wants to look, and you don't even have to be there physically. He has found that magnified images of the maps can show details that were obscure even in the originals. Astonishingly, information compression has meant that a picture that originally required 400 megabytes can actually be stored in 3% of that size without loss of image quality. By digitizing his maps and making them available, Rumsey has himself stepped into cartographic history. This book is a demonstration in book form of what Geographic Information Systems can do, and Rumsey sees the "digital wizardry of GIS not as a break from the past and old mapping traditions," but part of those traditions. If you go to the website, you can look around anywhere; there is no guide. _Cartographica Extraordinaire_, on the other hand, has the job of demonstrating the progress of history and of information display, and does both engagingly and handsomely.
An outstanding and representative collection.......2004-07-09
The impressively collaborative work of David Rumsey (President of Cartography Associates, a San Francisco-based digital publishing company, and Director of Luna Imaging, a provider of enterprise software for online image collections) and Edith M. Punt (professional cartographer and recipient of the 1996 National Geographic Award in Cartography), Cartographica Extraordinaire: The Historical Map Transformed is a 160-page, hardcover, coffee-table book printed on archival paper which showcases how technology has literally transformed the restoration, re-creation and reproduction of historical maps. The specific focus is upon maps (and the people who made them) that reflect American history and ranges from a 1736 atlas depicting California as an island, to a Civil War era "bird's-eye" view of military positions on the southeastern seaboard. This is an outstanding and representative collection drawn from the David Rumsey Map Collection and illustrates early American history from a uniquely geographic perspective. With it's informed and informative text, Cartographica Extraordinaire is clearly recommended for inclusion into professional, academic and community library Cartography Studies or American History collections. Indeed, Cartographica Extraordinaire would make an excellent selection for a truly unique Library Memorial Fund acquisition.
Not just extraordinary, it's amazing.......2004-07-05
At first sight, this is a gorgeous book. It exhibits historical maps made in nineteenth century America, and the reader might expect a reverential approach of the map collector that David Rumsey exemplifies. But David Rumsey is also the person who provides amazing open access to his collection through the highest tech web site. He sees maps not just as curiosities, but as a way to get inside the past. With Edith Punt, they have tied the maps into the social, environmental and technological changes that are shown. They use the most current geographic information systems technology to spark a connection to the current landscape. The old fragile maps come alive. While this book has the format and polish of your average coffee table book, this is a book to read and reread.

Circles of Recovery Indeed!.......2003-12-02
I have been sober for over twenty years, and for every person I meet in AA, I know ten who should be members but are put off by the slogans, seemingly religious orientation, etc. This is the first book I ever read about other paths to sobriety; a world wide survey of what works and what does not. (For instance, in Poland, far from being anonymous, if you are long term sober, they put you on TV. Why should our often illiterate amd overpaid athletes and rock stars be our only culture heros?)
A first class, helpful book, authoratative - the author is a professor of psychiatry at Stanford -- and very easy to read-- no jargon. Bill Manville
