Product Description
Pete Knight was one of rodeo's first international superstars. A Canadian champion bronc rider who also won championships in the United States through the 1920s & '30s, as well as fans in Australia and Eurpoe. His earnings in the rodeo arena rivaled that of top business executives of his day, as well as professional atheletes. Happily married and with a newborn baby girl, his life was tragically cut short in the rodeo arena. His story eerily mirrors that of another rodeo legend, Lane Frost. Young, handsome, a superstar and at the top of his game, his life ended in a rodeo arena.
Customer Reviews:
a Rodeo LEGEND!.......2006-12-28
I loved it. a great story and a must read for anyone who loves rodeo. a well written biography and am glad to add this to my collection!!! I really appreciate the rodeo legend series!
An outstanding biography of rodeo's first international superstar........2006-12-22
Pete Knight was rodeo's first international superstar and still considered Canada's greatest ever rodeo cowboy. He was a three-time world champion cowboy that toured the world winning prize money and accolades wherever he went. The author, who is also Pete Knight's great-nephew, had access to a wealth of personal information, family history and photos that provide an insider's look at an interesting man and life. This book also provides a great overview of life on the rodeo circuit in the 1920s and '30s, as well as information on other rodeo greats such as Harry Knight and others.

Book Description
In this timely and provocative work, Liu Kang offers a guide to post-1989 Chinese culture and its transformation into a post-revolutionary capitalist state. The picture he draws is of an emergent world power whose institutions have not yet succeeded in rendering its character clear or coherent. Neither socialist nor capitalist, modern nor postmodern, China's is a hybrid culture that embodies the fundamental tensions and contradictions of globalization. Although socialist alternatives and experiments have been drastically altered--if not completely abandoned--in China today, Mao's rhetoric still legitimizes the state, an inherent contradiction creating a sense of ideological crisis among intellectuals.
Unlike other critics, Liu argues that globalization is not simply a new conceptual framework through which cultural change in China can be understood; it is a historical condition in which the country's gaige kaifang (reform and opening up) has unfolded and a set of values or ideologies by which it and the rest of the globe are judged. In five clear and concise chapters, Liu examines China's current ideological struggles in political discourse, intellectual debate, popular culture, avant-garde literature, the news media, and the internet. He constructs an original understanding of post-revolutionary Chinese culture, making the case that revolutionary culture is still important despite the fact that Mao's ideology has been gutted and arguing for its value in providing China with its own cultural identity, curbing the excesses of capitalism, and putting forward an alternative model of modernization.
Globalization and Cultural Trends in China makes use of a broad range of up-to-date literary, scholarly, journalistic, policy, and popular cultural sources. It will be of considerable value for its insights into contemporary intellectual and cultural politics and debates about modernity, and for making material that is inaccessible to many widely available.

Customer Reviews:
Great for getting started, but missing what I was really looking for.......2007-09-17
I bought Microsoft Money 2007 Premium a few weeks ago. The interface was intuitive enough that I was able to get it set up and running without much trouble. I was also able to set up online functions with my various bank and investment accounts, including some institutions that are capable of automated updates, and some that require a manual download. Everything worked pretty slick, and transactions were rolling in nicely.
With all the data streaming in, I worked hard trying to figure out Money's balancing process, what it really means and how to assure everything balanced out and returned accurate figures for net worth, spending by category, investment values, etc. I got stuck with certain types of transfers from one account to another that were throwing off my reporting and decided I needed a book to help me learn the finer points.
I found that there is no book for 2007. I read that the changes from 2006 were minimal, so I ordered "Microsoft Money 2006 For Dummies" by Peter Weverka.
I found the book easy to read, topics easy to find, and I was able to get some answers on some basic questions, such as accurately splitting transactions across categories. I also liked the tips on how to more easily do the things I had already figured out, such as Find and Replace to edit transactions en masse. There are helpful warnings for potential pitfalls, which I don't think I'd have figured out on my own (at least not without pain).
My impression (totally subjective, of course) is that the author enjoys working with finances (and is really good at it), and recommends that we all take time to be careful and smart with our money. His book's advice, I thought, leaned toward manually handling accounts and taking a lot of time reconciling and balancing accounts.
I wish I were so inclined, but I really purchased Money for just about the opposite purpose! I'm more into letting the whiz-bang software do the work for me, in as automated a way as possible. I want to download the data from the bank, not enter it manually and then reconcile. After reading the book, I still do not know how to cope with the complicated volumes of data downloaded from my broker accounts: buys and sells, shifting of money from one fund to another, etc. There are only 24 pages out of 328 (one section) that are devoted to online banking. I was hungry for more.
I'm glad I have the book, and plan to give it another read through to make sure I didn't miss anything. I'll also keep looking for a book with more advanced information about the online features of Money.
MS Money 2006 for dummies.......2007-04-02

Microsoft Money 2006 For Dummies .......2006-03-10
As can be found in the ...for Dummies series... Lots of help and easy to find the answer to your problem. I had one specific question and found the answer right away. Now I have the book to find any other problem solver when needed.
Valuable Time-Saving Guide.......2005-10-23
If you own "Money 2005 for Dummies", you don't need "Money 2006 for Dummies", because the editorial content appears to be virtually identical in the two books. However, this manual is a real time-saver if you're trying to learn to navigate the powerful Microsoft Money program.
Microsoft Money has an unusually unfriendly user interface that hides locations for tools and custom-user settings in many unlikely places. Accessing the Microsoft help files requires going online, and the online files--written in the usual unhelpful Microsoft style--do not answer power-user questions. This book provides a desktop reference that aids you in setting up your initial financial files, and in understanding how the Money program is put together, so that you can quickly take full advantage of the multitude of wonderful things that the Money program can do for you.

Until writing this book, the author of Waiting for the Barbarians and other acclaimed novels has remained determinedly private about the personal experiences that sparked his writing. In Boyhood, describing his youth in the third person, J. M. Coetzee limns the halting struggle toward maturity of a sensitive, bookish boy contemptuous of his weak father who yearns--and fears--to loosen a powerful attachment to his mother. He evokes the narrowness and cruelty of South African society in the years following World War II with the same austere yet passionate prose that distinguishes his fiction.
Book Description
Coetzee grew up in a new development north of Cape Town, tormented by guilt and fear. With a father he despised, and a mother he both adored and resented, he led a double life--the brilliant and well-behaved student at school, the princely despot at home, always terrified of losing his mother's love. His first encounters with literature, the awakenings of sexual desire, and a growing awareness of apartheid left him with baffling questions; and only in his love of the high veld ("farms are places of freedom, of life") could he find a sense of belonging. Bold and telling, this masterly evocation of a young boy's life is the book Coetzee's many admirers have been waiting for, but never could have expected.
Customer Reviews:
Childhood through Coetzee's eyes.......2005-08-22
Coetzee uses an unusual third-person narrative writing style, in this personal memoir of his childhood. This style however is cold and distant and reflects his up bringing. Coetzee an established South African, Cape Tonian born writer has won various literature prizes for his work.
Coetzee takes his reader on a journey through the sites and memories of his childhood. He successfully allows you into deep chambers of his mind as a youngster growing up in a small Afrikaans, South African housing estate during the Apartheid era. Readers venture through the experiences and emotions of the young Coetzee, growing up in a home with a white English mother and a white Afrikaans father. He pours out emotions of confusion and the feeling of alienation felt, growing up in an unconventional home of the day. The same of having an English tongue in and Afrikaans dominated school leaves Coetzee fearful of failure and exposure.
In his memoir we meet Coetzee's parents, who he feels very differently about. He comes across as being very close to his mother whom he both loved and resented for her constant motherly protection. In his home he and his mother seem to have the first and last say on all decisions, this making them the head of their home. This unconventional arrangement angers him yet he does not want to loose this power control he lacks respect for is father. He is ashamed of his father and how soft he is and views him as the weaker parent. He feels that the way he has been raised makes him abnormal in his society and grows up always feeling like an outsider looking in.
Coetzee's book is an easy but is not particularly entertaining read. If you are looking for light comic relief, riveting romance, mysterious twists or nail biting suspense this book will definitely not have you reading cover to cover longing for more.
ok........2004-10-20
okay. has historical relevance as a memoir of an Afrikaaner boy growing up in S. Africa.
growing up.......2004-09-02
Gowing up, in every known culture, has always been a painful experience. Often happy one, but sometimes not so happy. Many times charming, and many times heavy with burden you bacome aware only later in your life. Coetzee has stared with his own growing in backwater town near Johannesburg, picturing the life as it has been in the days when he could be called young lad. Showing his affection towards his mother which always seemed to him more 'paternal' than she should have been, Coetzee paints a portrait of an ordinary child in not so ordinary sourroundings.
Qouestion is, can that be called literature. Of course it can, but it is somethig more than pure literature... it is life itself, pusling growing, crying, evolving... With every step of kiddie John you'll be aware of 'dangers' that lay ahead of him, for every wrong move he takes you'll feel sympathy... and besides other, that kind of thing composes the great literature
Double, double toil and trouble.......2004-08-10
This is the type of book you would expect from someone as accomplished as Coetzee. It's a simple story, with complex themes. It is a nostalgic introspective epic, seen through the eyes of a ten year old boy. It asks you (the reader) to judge the young protagonist, without giving you any help. The reader must keep in mind that this boy is going to be someone special later on in life, so, do you allow him the freedom to invent himself, or do you condemn him for the sins he confesses to? One could easily write a whole essay on this book, this is not the place. If you like being challenged, then this is a good read.
Finally, I grew up in the same area and under similar circumstances, it brought back many a memory.
Deceptively simple.......2003-11-11
Coetzee's real achievement here is to stick so close to a boy's consciousness that it hurts: the wisdom coupled with the lack of context for it, the physicality of feeling, the impossibility of articulation. Eschewing plot and character for an anecdotal narrative, Coetzee captures a boy's sense of reality, a reality that can't be easily transformed into narrative. A work of tremendous integrity and pain.

Book Description
To the Plains Indians of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, elaborately decorated hide shirts were symbols of bravery earned only by the most courageous of warriors. Those who had met the enemy in battle or slipped undetected into enemy camps to capture horses were awarded shirts specifically created to honor the wearer and the heroic deeds associated with him. Made from the skins of elk, deer, or mountain sheep, these spectacular garments were adorned with porcupine quills, paint, ribbons, locks of hair, and glass beads. Believed to hold intrinsic spiritual power, these shirts continue to play a large part in American Indian society today. Symbolizing honor, courage, and ancestral tradition, they are worn by tribal leaders at powwows and earned by students according to their academic and athletic accomplishments.
Beauty, Honor, and Tradition, a traveling exhibition organized by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, presents a new perspective on these garments, their creation and history, and their place in the cultures of the Plains Indian tribes. Through photographs and detailed descriptions of fifty-three representative shirts crafted from the 1820s to the 1990s, this book explores the complex relationship between the shirts, their makers, and their wearers. Throughout the text the voices of individual Plains Indians speak of the personal and cultural significance of these magnificent garments.
Joseph D. Horse Capture is assistant curator in the Department of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. They are coauthors of Warrior Artists (1998).
George P. Horse Capture is deputy assistant director of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian, and author of Powwow (1992).

over the past several years, i have read and acquired a good number of books about indian beadwork. all have included at least one or two war shirts. none of them prepared me for the overwhelming impact of this book.
war shirts were given to the men of the plains nations for remarkable courage and character and for impressive deeds. the shirts would be transferred to other men of equal standing. the designs were worked by women who were unusually talented in quill and bead embroidery. occasionally, the design of the shirt would be directed by the man to wear it, based on his dreams/visions.
since it is oversized, the book allows larger, more detailed photos of the shirts. quillwork, paint, beads and other materials show up clearly. the workmanship is stunning, the designs are magnificent. the use of materials is inspirational. the examples range from the early 19th century to contemorary shirts.
the text, aside from a couple of areas where the proofreader failed miserably in his job, is almost as interesting as the shirts. this is not to insult the authors. no words could equal the shirts. there are also quotes from contemporary indians about the shirts that are interesting and illuminating.
if this book had been published by abrams, the price would have been at least doubled. given the quality of the photos, that fact alone is worth a couple of stars.
this is a must for anyone interested in indian beadwork, history or art and for anyone interested in beauty and great design of any origin.

Product Description
Geocentricity might well be egocentricity-the phenomenon of retrograde motion is based on our Earth-centered view of the solar system, but the movement and cycles of retrograde planets are based entirely on the apparent motion of the Sun through the zodiac. Sullivan organizes and explains retrograde motion from a systems-viewpoint-the system of the Sun and planets-and interprets retrograde planets natally, by progression, and in transit.
Sullivan has interpreted these movements in a way that is immediately apparent and useful to both novice and professional astrologers, and provides both psychological and mundane interpretations of retrograde planets. This edition includes and index.

A MICROSCOPIC SEARCH OF HIDDEN TREASURE.......2002-07-20
It is an exemplary treatise on the subject.I could not find a satisfying book on RETRGRADE PLANETS in past. None has tried to evaluate the role of retrograde planets. But the retrogression is constant astronomical phenomina. The estimation of strength of every planet is its position. In all charts like RADICAL,PROGRESSED, TRANSITING and DIURNAL still more are to be evaluated to predict.Nothing goes without taking RETROGRADE PLANETS.
Now comes a treatise on this topic. The author goes into all details minute and deals with planets in retrograde. It is a blooming Diamond well polished with a permanent shining light. The studious compilation has to be commended for its eternal utility. The style is very simple and explaining.
IT IS A MUST TO EVERY ASTROLOGER A BEGINNER AND PROFESSIONAL AS WELL.
I APPRECIATE THE AUTHOR ERIN SULLIVAN FOR HER COMMENDABLE WORK IN BRINGING OUT SUCH A TREATISE.
Astrology Down Under.......2001-09-03
Erin Sullivan's book, Retrograde Planets, was a landmark of sorts in astrology at the time it was first published in 1992. It was the first user-friendly astrology text/book to really address the issue of retrogrades in an in-depth and thought-full manner. Retrograde planets seem to turn around and go backward from our perspective on earth. During their backwards transit, they encourage us to look at the "under" or "other" side of things, thus the title of my review. We are all used to Mercury's retrograde three times a year, or we should be or at least have heard of it. Sullivan's book doesn't stop there. She considers the nature and mechanics of retrogression as it affects the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and the outer planets as well. You will not find a more thorough or READABLE explanation of this important phenomena. Sullivan also gives a good long chapter to retrograde natal planets and the secondary progression of retrograde planets or planets to retrograde. Not the most exciting writer in the world, Sullivan is nonetheless, thorough, methodical, devoted to her work and readable enough. I give this 5 stars not because the book is a real can't put downer, but rather because Sullivan is a meticulous astrologer who really knows her stuff. "Retrograde Planets" should be considered a good intermediate reference volume for the budding professional astrology.
Retrogression Fully Explained............2001-01-15
This book has an amazing amount of info, written w/ great depth by Ms. Sullivan. It is a classic & must be read cover-to-cover. This is one for the serious Astrologer/student, & will be worth your effort! Some Astrology books seem slim in content...this one is chocked full of information on a sometimes ignored factor which occurs in most charts. Put your best thinking cap on for this one! Bravo, Erin!
Thank you, Erin.......2000-09-19
This is one of my all-time favorite astrology books. It made the movements of the planets understandable to me as no other book has. It includes detailed descriptions of the retrograde cycles of *all* the planets, and gives examples of how to use them in delineation. I found the parts about progressed aspects and stations particularly useful. Transits are included as well. There are many example charts with case histories to illustrate the principles Ms. Sullivan so clearly explains. I'd choose this book as part of an "essential" astrological library.

Accurately describes the experience of having a personal planet like Venus retrograde. A must read for any student of astrology!

Rethinking is the right word.......2004-09-22
Being an environmentalist isn't just about enjoying the outdoors or recycling. This is an in depth study of the complex interactions between humans and our world and an examination of our historical and cultural relationship with our environment. In particular, I found the discussion of our meaning for the word and our concept of nature to be particularly enlightening. There is simply no place in the world that isn't touched by human impact and noone on the planet who isn't touched by our environment and what we do to it. A MUST for anyone serious about the study of environmental study.
the result of a year-long project in critical thinking.......1998-12-26
Cronan has done it again! This volume of essays critically examines the concept of wilderness, nature, and humanity's role in the modern world. Though the individual essays are somewhat uneven, the main theme of the book is clearly communicated, especially in Cronan's introductory piece. That is, that the concept of wilderness needs careful rethinking, particularly with our world nearing 10 billion persons.
