Victroy Lane The John Earnhardt story.......2003-09-01
A small but powerful book which interwines a family history with one boy becoming a minister and the other a famous race driver. A redeeming work of how a belief system works in a family
Wonderful so far.......2003-06-04
I've only just started reading the book, and I can't hardly put it down. I've met the author(Crystal) and John and they are really nice. I highly reconmend the book.
I almost cried, when I got to the chapter when John found out that Dale had died in a race.

In the new action-adventure comedy Open Season, the first feature-length CG animated film from Sony Pictures Animation, a happily domesticated grizzly bear (Martin Lawrence) has his perfect world turned upside-down after he meets a scrawny, fast-talking mule deer (Ashton Kutcher). Open Season also features Debra Messing, Gary Sinise, Jon Favreau, and Billy Connolly (as head of a rogue gang of Scottish squirrels).
Open Season is directed by Roger Allers (The Lion King) and Jill Culton (credits include Monsters, Inc., Toy Story 2) and co-directed by Anthony Stacchi (credits include Antz).
The film showcases the Computer Generated (CG) animation created by Sony Pictures Imageworks Inc., an Academy Award®-winning, state-of-the-art visual effects and character animation company, dedicated to the art and artistry of digital production and character creation. Recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Imageworks has been nominated for its work on Spider-Man, Hollow Man, Stuart Little, and Starship Troopers.
The Art of Open Season gives you an inside look at an explosion of color and talent, documenting every aspect of creating a CG animated film, from scripting and storyboarding to layout, animation, color, lighting, and visual effects with sensational full-color images throughout.

Scrapbook styled artbook.......2007-07-10
Ignore the image of the cover I posted above. You're not going to get the same cover. You're going to get something better. The hardcover book came with a protective cardboard cover box with two holes cut into it. Peeking out of the two holes are Boog and Elliot, of course.
When you pull the book out of it's cover box, you'll notice that there's something different about this book and other art books. There are a lot of goodies packed within the pages. There were post cards, posters, mini booklets and even stickers!
Inside the book, there were tons of original sketches, beat boards and film stills. The captions and write ups were really nice to read. The content was so vibrant and full of life. The book actually feels like a scrapbook. I've several photos taken on Parka Blogs
Better 'Art of' book than Pixar's!.......2007-05-26
Pixar may want to review their delivery of any future art books now that Sony is delivering books like Open Season, chocked with goodies. This book is so packed full of art you would think the film was traditional. I enjoyed Open Season and wondered why since I cant stand most CG films except for Pixar's (excluding Cars). I know why now I see all the pre-production that went into it...for me Im a colour and environment lover and I was so happy to see Sony included colour scripts and beat boards! I really think this one is a great investment! The presentation is a real treat, I am looking forward to the Aardman art of books now that they are partners with Sony...keep it up.
Open Season.......2007-05-12
I have seen the movie and wanted to walk out on it within the fist five minutes. NOT because the animation was bad, or the art direction awful, simply because the pacing and the main character's voices were just getting in the way of the experience I look for in a movie, any movie : The escape.
When I picked up the book, I was almost shocked to see that the exact oposite was happening. I found myself flipping through the pages, being brought in to this magnificent world inspired by the older Disney designers, and really enjoyed the book.
I would recommend it as a standalone Art Book, rather than a complement to the movie. In fact, you might like the movie better if you just go through the book.
Amazing artbook!!!.......2007-03-15
Great artbook. really relly great!!! with lot of little details, postcards and beautiful sketches, backgrounds and3D modellings, etc and a really beaituful and perfect edition, with a "2nd cover" (I don't know how it's called in english)
One of the better "Art Of..." books out there!.......2007-01-22
If you are a serious student or professional of the animation field and/or a fan of the movie, "The Art of Open Season" is a must-have in your library. This book contains TONS of great early conceptual art and designs from the film. Additionally, the artworks are large and fills up all of the negative spaces of the pages, as opposed to small thumbnailed images that are often found in other "Art Of.." books. The presentation of the book is also of very high quality and neatly put together. Inspiring and informative, I believe this book sets a new standard for future "Art Of..." books (and I own quite a few myself). Highly Recommended!

Book Description
Cut to the essence of charted pop albums! Simple, straightforward and essential, Joel Whitburn's Album Cuts 1955-2001 alphabetically lists the over 225,000 cuts from the more than 22,000 albums that have appeared on Billboard's Pop albums charts. It's the ideal companion volume to Whitburn's Top Pop Albums 1955-2001 (00330936, $99.95) - and a must-have addition to any music reference library.
Customer Reviews:
A handy reference for chart hounds like myself.......2003-06-16
This book, the companion to "Top Pop Albums 1955-2001", is a great resource for people into popular music chart data. In case the book's description isn't clear, this is the kind of thing you can do with this book:
Do you want to make a compilation of every artist who recorded "Yesterday" on an album that charted on Billboard's pop album chart? This book lists, by song title, the artist name and year that the artist released an album with that song on it. Then you can look in the "Top Pop Albums" book to find out the name of the album the song was on.
My two criticisms of this book are that (a) it lumps recordings of different songs with the same song title together and (b) the cover doesn't match the companion book. As to the latter, since this book is really best thought of as part of a set, it would make sense to me to have their bindings appear similar. As to the former, if the reader has extensive knowledge of music he/she will probably be able to recognize song title entries that actually refer to more than one song; others may get confused and think that, for example, Kool and the Gang covered the Association's "Cherish."

eBay Timesaving Techniques for Dummies.......2006-09-22
The author stresses that a degree of understanding Ebay is assumed. So, if you are an Ebay newby, buy another book. Also, its primarily for those who are starting an Ebay business--if you are just selling your old trains or something similiar, buy another book. If you are starting a Ebay business, it has some pretty good suggestions.

Book Description
With bold Southern humor, journalist and performer Kirk Read takes readers on a guided tour of his precocious and courageous adolescence. Recalling his years as an openly gay high school student, Read describes how he navigated the hallways with his sense of humor and dignity intact. He fondly recalls his initiations into sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, as well as his "shy as neon" acts of rabble rousing during high school. How I Learned to Snap is a refreshingly victim-free story in which queer teenagers are creative, resilient, and ultimately heroic.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Book, and Very True to Life!.......2007-07-18
This is one of the best books I've read in quite a while. I have given it as a gift to several of my gay friends. Each of them (who grew up here) found Kirk's account to be "right on target".
I am amazed by the negative reviews and rude comments about Kirk Read.
Sometimes it is refreshing to read something written simply for the purpose of entertainment-we don't need big words to get the point. Kirk used simple language that ANYONE can understand and he used the actual sayings kids around here used at the time.
I have known Kirk most of my life. I can assure all readers that he is not arrogant and is not a brat-even if it seems that way. He was always one of the friendliest kids in the school-and was considered to be quite cool-, and the majority of people seemed to genuinely like him despite his openness about being gay.
Please consider this when reading the book. It is simply an entertaining story to allow others to relate to the experiences he had.
This book is worth your time and you won't be able to put it down.
Good but could be better........2006-06-07
The book is good and it keeps your attention, but you are left with the thought of "what was the point"? The book does not go in depth at all. And he only touches on his eating disorder which would have made an amazing chapter. He did not go through anything in high school that anybody, straight or gay, did not experience. There was not point to this book. It was funny and quick witted but he got on my nerves right from the beginning. He does not tie in the Snap to the whole story. You are left to figure that out on your own. I do not recommend this book.
Snap, Crackle, Pop.......2006-05-25
Man oh Man (or better still, man on man) can this guy write! His last name is Read and that is what he makes us do. You all know by now that this is a coming of age, coming out story set in the South in the eighties. What differentiates it is how adorable the author and star character comes across. His swish side is offset by his tough soccer playing and ability to beat up the homophobic bullies. Above all else is his terrific sense of humor. Then there's the writing. Describing a particularly intense right-wing, holy-roller Christian recruiting experience: "If God had to go to such lengths to invite people to his birthday party, He probably wasn't serving very good cake." (Interesting that the "H" is capitalized.) On his "emotional girlfriend's" driving habits: "...we were a pair of crash test dummies waiting for our brick wall to arrive." There are plenty of other examples. Unfortunately, the author's website (kirkread.com) is not nearly as well put together as the book (only two non-descript photos of Mr. Read) but it does indicate that a second book is in the works. Bring it on!
When is the movie coming out?.......2006-01-18
What an incredibly open and honest and captivating story! Read is a storyteller to reckon with -- he gives us the coming-of-age story that makes all of those coming-out stories just look silly. This is a story about growing up that doesn't pull any punches or make you grimace because it's cutesy or fake -- bravo, Kirk Read!
One is never too young to develop standards........2005-09-12
That is one of the numerous quotes that I have taken from this book and completely agree with. Kirk Read is not only a talented and interesting gay man with personality and one hell of a sense of humour, he's also witty. He tells his story of growing up in a supposed homophobic neighbourhood in such a way that makes you want to not put the book down until you have finished it. I constantly found myself breathless from laughter and impressed with his cleverness.
It's practically impossible to not like Kirk. Even the people he was surrounded by that were homophobic or had even the slightest aversion to gays liked him. This book is not only about a gay teenager going through life, encountering obstacles and overcoming them, it's also a lesson in acceptance of others and oneself. `How I Learned To Snap' can easily change your perception of certain people and situations. There were many times in the book that Kirk thought that he would have to fight something and he even got extremely excited in some instances only to discover that things were not exactly the way that he had assumed.
So why did I only give this book four stars? I must admit that it did not flow as well as I thought it could have. I usually have this problem when it comes to autobiographies, it has nothing to do with the book itself, it's just my preference coming into play.
I recommend this book to anyone, not just GLBT people. It will teach you a lot about yourself and the world around you.
Book Description
In Rational Mysticism, acclaimed journalist John Horgan embarks on an adventure of discovery, investigating the ways in which scientists, theologians, and philosophers are attempting to formulate an empirical explanation of spiritual enlightenment. Horgan visits and interviews a fascinating Who's Who of experts, including theologian Huston Smith; Andrew Newberg, explorer of the brain's "God module"; Ken Wilber, a transpersonal psychologist and Buddhist; psychedelic pharmacologist Alexander Shulgin; Oxford-educated psychologist and Zen practitioner Susan Blackmore; and postmodern shaman Terence McKenna. Horgan also explores the effects of reputed enlightenment-inducing techniques such as fasting, meditation, prayer, sensory deprivation, and drug trips. In his lively and thought-provoking inquiry, Horgan finds surprising connections among seemingly disparate disciplines, not the least of which is a shared awe of the nature of the universe.
Customer Reviews:
A relative disappointment.......2007-09-06
My impetus for reading this book largely came largely from my fondness for the author's superior The End of Science. The title of this book is a bit odd, since it doesn't make any particular case for the rationality of mysticism. The book is an easy read, but some of the gurus it discusses are not even interesting in their oddness. The author seems as fascinated by psychedelics as he does by spirituality, and the reader will likely come away having learned as much about the former as the latter.
What a waste.......2007-02-13
Don't be fooled, this book is not rational, mystic, nor will it do anything to enlighten the reader. The title of this book is as decieving as it possibly could be and if you are interested in any of the things mentioned (science, spirituality, myscicism, rationailsm, or enlightenment) this is NOT the book for you.
Rational or not, it seems mysticism without purpose other than escapism .......2006-08-07
In "The End of Science", Horgan contacted leading scientists. In "Rational Mysticism" he has contacted leading mystics.
It seems harder to establish what a leading mystic is: the quiet old lady down the street may have more mystical wisdom than latest guru to make the cover of a New Age magazine.
This book may be intended as an introduction to many mystical paths so that you can follow up on those that intrigue you
To his credit, Horgan recognizes the dangers of authorities within Eastern relgions: Westerners running from Christiantity seem often to fail to recognize the lack of substantiation for enlightenment or for rebirth. He has, at least, taken to heart the "Anti-Guru" observations of Diana Alstad and Joel Kramer. But Horgan seems to have been misled by Huston Smith and Stephen Batchelor into overvaluing ideals: how far is one beyond belief if one measuring oneself against abstracted qualities that one can always imagine an improvement upon.
If by the end of this book a lot is still up in the air, how can it be honestly otherwise? Horgan does identify our reliance on one assumption: free will but in so doing indicates little else can be assumed. But what is the value of knowing of all these mystics if none of them seemed to have helped Horgan get through his day? At least he hasn't, that I have seen, shown how all this study of mysticism helps him cope with life in Hudson Valley (except to provide perhaps some income). Perhaps, as he has done now with science and then mysticism, he can present a book of wisdom on ordinary living (in a world tottering on unsustanability).
A rational mysticism, then, may not be noteworthy if all it amounts to is an assumption of our free will. This may then be a good point for Horgan to review a decision he presented in "The End of Science" to esteem Nohm Chomsky at the expense of B.F. Skinner [ My review of "The End of Science" alludes to that]. Skinner's analysis of how to address private events (not only mystical but just plain thinking) in a natural science as well as his concerns about how religions may function as control agencies seems relevant to Horgan's investigations. Radical Behaviorism was, at least, an effort to follow natural scientific method. Whether it can help in a way mysticism can't I don't know, but I don't recall or other responsible Radical Behaviorists advocating we take drugs to induce special states of mind. They seem content with gradual steps at improving behaving.
Whether Horgan, who relegated Dzogchen (arguably as mind-blowing a teaching as to be found anywhere) to a footnote in this book, has more of offer about science and mysticism, I don't know. If the burden of rationality meant opting for Huston Smith and Ken Wilber, the cost of recognizing any genuine mystical input may have been too high. Perhaps what Horgan has done is popular, this cataloging of sciences and mysticisms. However, a return to science in the form of a study of Radical Behaviorism may be another area, besides just studying how people get by in ordinary ways, in which his exploratory and explanatory gifts may be better utilized.
Horgan is all over the place.......2006-06-30
Just finished the book. Horgan writes like a journalist (and of course, he is one) and the book reads like a series of articles loosely bound by a weak central theme, if you can call it a theme. Like most of the other reviewers I recommend using RM's bibliography to do your own research. I kept waiting for Horgan to tie up the loose ends in this book. His conclusion: every path to enlightenment is flawed, but maybe enlightenment is not worth striving for anyway. Horgan's message is a real downer for the spiritual seeker. Just because he does not understand another's spirituality does not make it any less valid for the seeker.
I'd skip this one..........2006-04-16
Unfortunately, this author has a tendency to write skeptically about things that he has no personal experience with...which amounts to [...]. His article about Buddhism on Slate.com provokes howls of laughter from Buddhists. :) It really is that bad. Any freshman in college who's taken a comparative religion course would, at a glance, see the blatant errors.
John is part of a new breed of writer who write with an eye for profit rather than from a a place of integral knowledge, with no experience or indepth training in the subjects that they choose to critique. This type of writer aggressively data-mines with a set of closed values and perceptions, which results in a superficial and generally wrong understanding (sometimes profoundly so in John's case) of the subjects they are examining.
This book is no exception. I recommend skipping this one. Instead, why not read some of the authors he examined and draw your own conclusions. Who needs an underinformed, closed-minded googler to tell us who these authors are and what they are thinking about? I recommend the following...
