One of the most incredible athletes in the history of the game.......2007-05-05

The incredible thing about Nolan Ryan is not his longevity in pitching for 27 seasons. What is truly astounding is the fact that he never resorted to being a junk pitcher in the later years. Even at the age of 44, he was throwing fastballs in the high nineties. I also remember when he first came up with the Mets and once owned a copy of the Mets rookie stars baseball card where he appeared with Jerry Koosman.
This book chronicles the baseball life of one of the best athletes to ever throw a baseball, in my opinion, the only two pitchers who could possibly be compared to him in terms of durability and quality are Cy Young and Leroy Paige. The opposing batters were still muttering about the quality of his fastball when he was over forty, and you read many of their quotes in this book. He is an amazing man, and I vividly remember watching him pitch in televised games. One in particular was a near no-hitter that was broken up in the late innings by Reggie Jackson. Even through the blurring effect of the television camera, you could see the defeatist body language of the batters as they stood at the plate.
This is one of those baseball books that you buy and then take off the shelf and reread every few years just to admire his greatness.

A Scrapbook Autobiography.......2000-09-16

This short (122pages) book commemorates Nolan Ryan's induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame by telling the story of his rise to baseball's elite beginning with his boyhood in Alvin, Texas, and ending with his remarks at the induction ceremony many years later.

This really is similar to a family scrapbook. It includes family photographs, interesting stories, and information you may not have run across before. Newspaper excerpts and comments celebrate each of Ryan's seven no hitters and the game in which he set the all time strike out record. Also included is a section in which Ryan's contemporaries comment on their favorite memories of the hall of famer. The list of contributors in this section is extensive and includes such fellow Hall of Fame inductees as Sandy Koufax, Tom Seaver, Frank Robinson, and Henry Aaron.

I found the two best features of the book to be the great pictures and the question and answer session which covers a variety of topics. Among the things the reader will learn are who Ryan's heroes are, what his greatest thrill was, how he wants to be remembered, and what advice he has for those who are running the game today.

If you are a general baseball fan looking for an in-depth autobiography of this great pitcher, you will probably be disappointed. On the other hand if you are a collector of Nolan Ryan memorabilia or just a fan of the man himself, this is a must have book.

Well written, covered v2 exam blueprint. Highly recommended as a review guide before taking exam. Included tests in cdrom is big plus. Used it and passed re-cert.

An excellent introduction to advanced concepts.......2007-05-15

This book is an excellent introduction into advanced Routing & Switching concepts. I have just completed the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) examinations, and chose this book as the next logical step. I've already been very pleased with the decision.

The text is understandable and well written and can easily be studied from. I've started preparing for the CCIE and am working through the book as it is written, understanding and memorizing as I go (I also use the computer software "Supermemo").

One thing I will point out: the CCIE Written Exam Blueprint (available on Cisco's website) is changed to version 3.0 as of mid-June, 2007. This book is written for the previous version of the blueprint and doesn't include all aspects of IPv6. MPLS (another new topic for the CCIE Exam) is included in the appendix of this book.

Good, but lacking some detail.......2007-05-06

If you get your CCIE, you will be taking written exams for the rest of your career (I'm 12-year CCIE, I just passed my sixth written), so a study guide is a wise investment. This is a pretty good one - but even though its over a thousand pages long, it still lacks details in some areas.

Although it is common to buy some routing protocol books on top of these, that's not the areas that I found it to be weakest. Several protocols in the LAN section aren't discussed in sufficient detail, and the wireless sections look like they just got burned out and threw together something quickly. You had better plan on additional research on these topics.

The CD sample questions are sometimes helpful to point out weak areas, but don't expect to see many (or perhaps any) of them on the exam. The PDF version was extremely useful - not for reading but for searching. If I was looking for information on a protocol, I could search the PDF and find the page number, which matched the book. I always find books easier to read than PDFs.

Gives a good overview of the early start of PMC's. The type is small and a bit hard to follow the story line. Good history lession of the Britsh Army and how it is formed.

excellent view of the future of military needs.......2007-07-03

The autobiography is interesting but what I found particularly thought provoking is the discussion of what the future holds for government armies and the new world of terrorism and insurgencies. What Col. Spicer predicted 7 years ago as a need for private security forces to be used by legitimate governments has come to pass. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to understand the complicated future of the modern military.

Unorthodox Soldier - Privatizing War.......2006-11-23

Readers should be aware that more than a first person narative of events this book contains a point of view of Mr. Spicer towards PMC's (Private Military Company). I was expecting an action packed biography and instead found myself reading about a PMC named Sandline. Sandline is a company that no longer exists and Tim Spicer explains why it doesnt. He lays out all sorts of historical backgrounds and current facts in support of privatizing war. To be fair I enjoyed learning about the nature of military contractors and enlightened my position in support towards them. Someone interested in some action should probably stay away. If you are interested in a more political point of view towards mercenaries this is a great book for you.

Soldier of Fortune........2006-03-16

This an interesting book, focusing on the merits of the modern Private Military Company/Contractor (PMC) and why the common perception of such a military resource is outmoded. Ironically, it is the quality of the governments cited as arbiters of high moral standards which is repeatedly called into question: From the political expediency that branded Guardsmen Fisher and Wright as murderers, to the incredibly senseless actions by the British Foreign Office under the leadership of the now deceased Robin Cook over the Sierra Leone/Sandline affair, which almost led to the imprisonment of Lieutenant-Colonel Tim Spicer for allegedly breaching UNSCR 1132.

Sandline is no more. But Lieutenant-Colonel Tim Spicer is now at the head of Aegis, the most prominent PMC operating in Iraq, where many of the services alluded to in his book are being effectively deployed in the manner he envisaged.

Informative on the PMC and good topic for debates.......2005-07-15

This book provides information on the start up of a Private Military Company (PMC). The author provides good topics for discussion regarding how PMC's may be used in less than stable regions of the world. Current events in the southern part of Africa and Iraq have seen the prolific use of PMC's by not only small governments, but also large militaries, like the United States.

This book obviously is good topic for debates regarding the pros and cons of UN peacekeeping, how they have failed, and how PMC's may be used to protect the weak from the thugs and bandits that prey on them.

The one downside of this book is the very small font print. Larger font print would have made the book much easier and enjoyable to read. If one has poor vision, this book would be very difficult to read.

Overall, the book provided a good viewpoint on PMC's and the questionable efforts of the UN in protecting those who are in need.

The smart bombs used during the Gulf War. Burke, who wrote Connections (the book and the television show), revels--or better, wallows--in the accidental nature of the march of discovery. Despite a penchant for playing it loose and free with scientific and historical accuracy, Burke has compiled a fascinating look at the great matrix of change and transformation that humans have created for themselves.

Fabulous book!.......2007-10-03

James Burke has done it again. This is a delightful read! For anyone who thinks history is boring, they need to read The Pinball Effect. James Burke has a wonderful irreverant sense of humor throughout this book, and shows how history happens because of all of us, not just great men of genius.

Connections getting tired.......2005-07-09

Burke's "Connections" is an excellent reference source. It aroused a passion within the reader to progress further with this fascinating subject, of how significant events were connected, and how technology devolped from them.
The Pinball Effect is a good example of an author, that like Clive Custler, should have stopped writing while they were ahead.
A very boring read

Very inventive style but TMI.......2003-07-05

This is an ingenious ways of writing a book but it borders more on a way of storing information. It is not the type of book that you read from cover to cover although you could that if you wanted to. It is essentially cross-referenced with itself. What is does is talk about a particular advancement or invention, providing page numbers in the margins for other advancements or inventions that that one enabled. You can bounce all through the book this way - hence the name of the book. It is very interesting but there is a certain amount of information overload. I kept wondering 'How does he know all of this stuff?'.

James Burke's The Pinball Effect is a literary fractal through inventive history. The book seems not to follow any particular pattern, but after finishing the book the reader can look back and see a distinct orderliness. Creativity and openness begets creativity. I read this book as one would read a novel, but Pinball can be analyzed from several perspectives. Invention and time can be easily traced through seemingly unrelated events in Burke's writing. More than once I thought I would single out an invention connection, but the next story amazed me even more. Easy to read, the book lends itself to deeper analysis in tracing humans' journeys, origins, and light bulb moments. Two things impressed me about the people who were inventive: 1. They availed themselves to other creative people. and 2. They were able to see new things because they looking for them.
