Book Description
They weren't your run-of-the-mill basketball games. Instead of sneakers, players wore their work shoes or went barefoot. Games were scheduled between the picking times for tobacco, cotton, and corn and after all the crops had been harvested. Often the courts had only dirt floors. But for the Indian community living in Robeson and its neighboring North Carolina counties from 1939 until 1967, basketball was the symbolic measurement of life itself, where a single decision could lead to either victory or defeat. The stands were always overflowing, and spirits ran high.
It was a remarkable, but previously undocumented, era in the history of North Carolina sports. Now, every fan can enjoy this fascinating, little-known story in Playing Before an Overflow Crowd: The Story of Indian Basketball in Robeson, North Carolina, and Adjoining Counties. Names, dates, photographs, anecdotesthe entire history of the Tri-County Indian High School Athletic Conference is all here.
This chronicle of Native-American boys and girls high-school basketball during the South's racially segregated decades is a testament to the camaraderie and sense of community Indians established on and around the basketball court. And anyone who wants to learn the secret of the success of The University of Oklahoma's great basketball coach, Kevin Sampson, will find it here.

Book Description
Kira Muratova is a respected and original contemporary film director, yet her earliest works were not welcomed when they were first shown at the beginning of Brezhnev's "period of stagnation." Only in 1987, in one of the first breaths of perestroika, were these movies rereleased, sending Muratova from talented pariah to celebrity almost overnight. Drawing from interviews with Muratova herself and her friends, unpublished scripts and interviews with audiences, Taubman traces the progress of Muratova's career, looking closely at each of her films, including the 1990 masterpiece Asthenic Syndrome. She also surveys critical reaction to her films, both in Russia and the West.

Book Description
Like any popular medium, comic books in the 20th century were marked by trends. Unlike music or film or television, comics can point to a small handful of men who, through a combination of imagination and artistry, dictated those trends. Chief among the idea men was Jack "King" Kirby, a primary inspiration for both Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and George Lucas' Star Wars films.
Kirby's dynamic art and limitless imagination were responsible for much of what made comics great from the 1940s through the '70s. With early collaborator Joe Simon, Kirby created Captain America during World War II and, after the war, the romance comics genre that dominated the industry in the '50s. As the creative vision behind Marvel comics in the '60s, Kirby (with writer Stan Lee) rejuvenated superheroes with such characters as The Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Thor, and The X-Men. In the '70s, Kirby's ambitious "Fourth World" series of comics for DC Comics set a new standard in epic genre storytelling; today it is widely acknowledged as an inspiration for George Lucas' Star Wars mythos. In Jack Kirby: The Comics Journal Interviews, the first of a series of collections of interviews and essays from The Comics Journalthe field's premier magazine of comics news and criticism for the past 25 yearsFantagraphics Books presents a comprehensive look at the man and the creator through a series of exclusive in-depth interviews and critical essays. In his own words, Kirby describes the circumstances of the creative process, his many contributions to the comics medium, and candidly discusses his personal and professional triumphs and disappointments, including his landmark battle with Marvel Comics in the 1980s over the intellectual properties and original art created work-for-hire for the publishing giant over a 25-year period.
Jack Kirby: The Comics Journal Interviews is published in an oversized art book format of 12" x 12" that spotlights Kirby's dynamic artwork as well as his words. Kirby, universally considered the "King" of the superhero genre in comics, passed away in 1993. Black-and-white illustrations throughout with a full-color section.
Customer Reviews:
The Germinal Genius Behind The Marvel Universe.......2003-03-28
This book, a critical introduction to Kirby, sets the stage for future volumes in the series. (It is not at all intended as a posh coffee table book of the man's art. For great samples of Kirby's art, there are still many places you can go.) It cleaves, more or less cleanly, into three sections: interviews, critical appraisals/appreciations and the last section, devoted to Kirby's battle with Marvel over the return of his original artwork.
One of the most satisfying and essential parts of this book is a 1989 interview in which Kirby takes off the gloves and asserts unequivocally that one man created the stable of characters that made Marvel the power it has been for the last 4 decades, and further that that man IS NOT the one taking all the credit, the one you may think it is.
The history of popular culture repeats scenarios like this over and over again. When all the legends of New Orleans jazz were dead and buried, truly marginal figures who could have never made it in Chicago or New York crawled out of the woodwork, claiming a bigger part in the music's history than they actually played. And fans, far enough removed from the era when the epic figures roamed the earth, ate it up as gospel. The same thing happens now. With Jack Kirby gone, a certain one remaining can claim the truly preposterous: that he was something more than a mere editorial front man for the publishing house. Having believed his own overblown PR for decades, the party in question finds himself in a position where few can contest any claim he makes. In such an environment, this book becomes critical to understanding an important truth: Jack Kirby was the Genius Originator of modern Marvel. Say it again: Jack Kirby was the Genius Originator of modern Marvel. It is time the record is set straight.
The other guy (let's bestow on him the kind of appellation he might relish, and even claim credit for if someone else came up with it: Doctor Disingenuous) has always publicly rounded off the corners of the truth. He seeks furiously to hide the fact that he was a mere nepotistic beneficiary, a 'personality' man, a cheesy emcee and carney barker in the scheme of things.
Give yourself a special no-prize if ya read me, Tiger!
The Comics Journal drops the ball.......2002-08-06
It is ironic that The Comics Journal, a critical journal which holds other publishers to such stringently high standards, should produce such a flawed publication as this. A frustrating collection of superb text and wretched production values, THE COMICS JOURNAL LIBRARY: JACK KIRBY is "the first of a series of coffee table-style volumes devoted to the life and work of exceptional cartoonists." The text is roughly a 50-50 mix of interviews (conducted over a course of 20 years) and essays. While the essays provide a level of serious analysis rarely encountered in the fan press, Jack Kirby was far too prolific a creator for his life's work to be summarized in one slim volume. The latter portion of the book chronicles Kirby's battle for the return of his Marvel artwork in the late '80s. The majority of illustrations are poor-quality black and white reproductions shot from comic book pages. The use of a gray background behind the text imparts an overall dull look to a book about one of comics' most energetic stylists. The 12"x12" format puts a lot of stress on the binding, and the cover stock kinks and creases easily; a hardcover would have been a more sensible choice for a book of these dimensions. Despite its grievous shortcomings as an art book, THE COMICS JOURNAL LIBRARY: JACK KIRBY is the most serious critical attempt to come to grips with the sprawling visual genius of the creator of pop culture icons such as Captain America, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Hulk, the New Gods, the Silver Surfer and many more. Let's hope that future volumes of THE COMICS JOURNAL LIBRARY are preceded by an open call to the comic art collector community for illustrations.

Customer Reviews:
Works for getting the basics and cert prep.......2007-06-10
Not being interested in certification, I was looking for something that would get me the basics, and tell me where to go to get the meat. This book is doing that. Includes a MS SQL Server 2000 120 day use installation disk. The install includes the "Books On Line" (a source of a lot of meat).
Not caring if this is good for cert test prep, and having never taken a cert test, I can't tell you if it is a good prep. It hase provided a good portion of the information I was looking for, and helped me understand the changes / inhancements in MS SQL 2005.
4 stars because I am seldom overwhelmed with something.
Simply badly designed for exams.......2006-05-22
I believe that the writers made some bad choices when they first began to write this book. First of all, unlike most other certification books the exam goals are not together in one section. Instead there are whole chapters for queries, indexes, views, etc with all of the information about each topic in that chapter. So if you wanted to read about 'query optimization' you would have to read the sections within that chapter about query optimation from the queries chapter, from the index chapter, some from the views chapter, etc. So if you want to review a specific topic that you are not as good at you will be doing a lot of page flipping.
Second the book is too thick. It contains a lot of information that i doudt that you will actually get on the exam (like estimating the size of a table). It also has about a 100-150 page objective by objective index at the back with questions. But these sections seem to be fragmented from the rest of the book and do not have enough information to truely learn the objective. The first part of the book seems to be written as an introduction to databases book rather then a certification book, and i dont think that i would use this book to introduce myself to databases anyway.
Third: the practice certification exam does not work. The practice exam is an exam that seems to have an embeded internet explorer and is ran by javascript. I have no clue why you would use javascript to create a practice exam. Anyway i get the 'error running these scripts, would you like to continue running scripts on this page error' and i am unable to run the exam. I am using windows xp service pack 2 internet explorer 6.1.
I personally went out and bought the exam cram for 229 and it seems to be much better.
This Won't Prepare You For 70-229 But a Good Starting Point........2005-05-17
This book is a very easy read, explains concepts clearly, but lacks the kind of detail necessary for passing the 70-229 exam, especially if you are taking this as an elective on the developer track. It will get you through most of what you need to know at 10,000 feet, but it will not take you to a passing score. It taught me things I had never used and for that it is well worth the time investment. I also love the fact that you can install the "e-book" on a laptop and a desktop at home and never carry the hard cover book around.
I had been using SQL Server 2000 for years and thought this would be a snap for me. After reading this book I thought I was ready for the test. On the practice exam I saw words that were used that I had no idea what the context was. Those functions are not discussed in this book but you can trust they will be covered completely on the test! You will thoroughly need to know things like triggers, functions and constraints, and all their possible parameters, or you will not be prepared for the exam.
After going through the book you will be ready for the material that is available at the practice test vendors Microsoft recommends at the Microsoft Web sites for MCAD & MCSD Certification. I am not trying to promote any company and I have nothing to gain by saying the following: The study guide I purchased for about the cost of this book prepared me for the exam. This book prepared me for the study guide.
Book for SQL novice.......2005-04-17
This book is good for a person whom does not know any thing about SQL and Database Designing. If you are an Experience whom trying to get ready for the exam. then save your money and look for different one. This book will just wast your time.
Microsoft Blew it - Again.......2005-03-22
This book is so full of ommissions and errors that it is virtually usless as a tutorial or reference.

Inspirational.......2007-01-12
Fannie Lou Hamer was a remarkable person who may not have received the publicity and accolades of other Civil Rights personalities, but she certainly accomplished as much as anyone in the movement. Lee does a very solid job of taking the reader through Hamer's life. The only criticism I have is that Lee on occasion editorializes about contradictory things that Hamer said, as well as speculates as to what motivated Hamer in certain instances. It would have been more effective to simply let the reader think about such things and make up their own mind. This is a minor quibble, however, because Lee has contributed to the small body of work on Hamer in a substantive manner. I had a hard time putting this book down even though I already knew all the details of Hamer's life from reading other books. Lee synthesizes her information nicely which makes this book a coherent read. The reader gets a vivid picture of the ups and downs Mrs. Hamer encountered in her brilliant life. Fannie Lou Hamer's life was a testament to the human spirit and will to fight for justice. The Civil Rights Movement cannot be fully understood without knowing about the contributions of Hamer. You need to read this book.
A Wonderful Book.......1999-11-29
I have read and heard so much about men in the Civil Rights Movement, and I have read so little about women. This book for me filled a gap.It told an exciting story with great eloquence. It portrayed the life of a heroine of the Civil Rights Movement, and described the times. And it was at the same time rich and intellectually sophisticated. I cannot recommend this book enough to all readers, and I hope these comments motivate others to get this wonderful book and read it.
A stirring and important biography of an important American.......1999-10-06
Chana Kai Lee makes a crucial contribution to our understanding of the civil rights movement with this stirring and important biography of Fanny Lou Hamer. Mrs. Hamer, an icon in the movement and a force unto herself, was one of the strongest and most influential voices in the African American struggle for freedom. Thanks to Professor Lee, that voice echoes for the ages in the pages of For Freedom's Sake. This is a book that all Americans should read and that students and general readers alike will enjoy. Like its subject, this well-crafted book will be a beacon for freedom for many years to come.

Book Description
Provides the 300 most useful manhour tables for practically every item of construction. Labor requirements are listed for sitework, concrete work, masonry, steel, carpentry, thermal and moisture protection, door and windows, finishes, mechanical and electrical. Each section details the work being estimated and gives appropriate crew size and equipment needed. Includes a CD-ROM with an electronic version of the book with National Estimator, a stand-alone Windows estimating program, plus an interactive multimedia video that shows how to use the disk to compile construction cost estimates.
Customer Reviews:
Be Careful On The Pricing........2002-09-03
This book uses "unit pricing" or "flat rate pricing," a helpful way to estimate a project when you are sure the pricing reflects your material and labor costs plus the correct markup for your business. You should take a sample case and compare your actual costs to a listed unit price. You can then adjust (increase or decrease) the listed prices to reflect your situation. I suggest you use the prices as a guide to a pricing system that is best for your type of business. New home building costs less than remodeling and repair. Any unit price process has to take into account the demands of the project. Many home builders have gone broke pricing a remodel project using the same cost process as they did on a new home.
Many Manhours For Construction.......1999-03-30
I'm impressed with the amount of manhours are in this book. Just about every job in construction is listed -- with the amount of time it takes to complete that job -- from digging a ditch to installing a toilet.

Book Description
As with most shorelines around the world, New Jersey beaches are slowly, but inexorably, being eroded, threatening coastal structures and development. In some years more sand is deposited than removed, but all of the state's monitoring devices show that sea level is gradually rising and pushing the New Jersey shoreline inland. The shore is a valuable resource, and its natural, cultural, and economic attractions draw a multitude of permanent and temporary residents, extending housing and commercial development onto areas that were once wetlands. Not surprisingly, development at the water's edge has been accompanied by an increasing exposure to the natural hazards of the coastal zone¾erosion, flooding, and wind damage.
In this book, Norbert Psuty and Douglas Ofiara incorporate perspectives from the areas of coastal sciences, economics, public policy, and land-use planning in creating a systematic plan for coastal management and protection. It has been more than two decades since New Jersey developed the nation's first state shore stabilization plan, and this volume provides a timely evaluation of its achievements and future challenges. This self-contained book provides key relevant theories, models, and examples so the reader will not need to refer to any other literature to gain an understanding of the issues and policies surrounding shore stabilization. It is the authoritative handbook for practitioners and policy makers in many fields, including coastal science and management and engineering, as well as public policy and economics.
