Book Description
Comprised largely of the detailed journals kept throughout his travels, this narrative of a bicyclist's seven-year, 40,000 kilometer odyssey around the world documents the richness of the planet's sights, sounds, and teeming life as experienced from the saddle of a bicycle. During his journey, the author experiences firsthand the effect of international politics on media-invisible cultures while mingling with an endless array of unusual and wonderful characters. As he immerses himself in the culture of every country he visits, learning the languages and customs as he travels, he witnesses the clash of values between developed and developing worlds and the inherent tensions between tradition and progress. Throughout, he comes to a deep understanding of the role that the bicycle plays not only in his life but also in the lives of the world's citizens.
Customer Reviews:
What a wonderful journey!.......2007-05-07
I take my hat off to Dave for pulling this off. He travels 40,000 kms across some of the most inhospitable, yet sometimes beautiful terrain in Japan, China, Nepal, India, Australia, South East Asia, Turkey, across many countries in Europe and finally, through his homeland, the US. He lives in some of these countries for varying periods of time and his entire journey takes 8 years to complete. It is an amazing story of the man and his diverse experiences with humankind. A must read for those who love adventure.
Best of the genre.......2006-05-11
I've read a fair number of cycling oddessy books because I like the topic. Admittedly, within this genre, it can be rare to find a book that is well written, and even rarer to find one with a compelling narrative. However, this gem scores well on both accounts. The author has a lot of material to draw from, as he describes a 7 year adventure around the globe that takes him to some pretty rough but exciting places. More importantly, the events the author faces have a deep impact on him. He conveys this with thoughtfulness and intelligence, but the text is never preachy. This book does offer a unique and honest perspective on world travel however. The events described really stuck with me after I had turned the last page, and I was sad to see the adventure end. For me, "Odysseus' Last Stand : The Chronicles of a Bicycle Nomad," represents the best of the genre. For a more humorous collection of cycle travel anecdotes, Kurmaskie's Metal Cowboy is quite good.
Seven years and 40,000 kilometers around the world.......2005-05-19
In 1992, Dave Stamboulis began a bicycle trip that was to last seven years and 40,000 kilometers around the world. Odysseus' Last Stand: The Chronicles Of A Bicycle Nomad his his account of his adventures as he bicycled through obscure countries and foreign cultures, taking in all the sights, sounds, and teeming life that can be viewed from the slower and more intimate pace of a bicycle. What motivated Stamboulis to his epic odyssey was the need to slow down in a world that was moving every faster, and to explore the role that the bicycle plays in peoples' lives around the world. Odysseus' Last Stand is also a candid and informative study of an attempt to find his place in a world that is a complex web of tensions between ancient traditions and technological/industrial progress, value differences between the developed and the developing countries. Along the way we are treated with insights, compassion, and a great deal of humor. Enhanced with eight pages of color photographs, Odysseus' Last Stand: The Chronicles Of A Bicycle Nomad is especially recommended reading for armchair travelers, as well as anyone who has thought about traveling the world along the lesser known paths.

Customer Reviews:
Only Dummies buy Goldmine.......2006-08-08
Used the product for years, and had nothing but database corruption and Goldsync synchronization problems. I like and use salesforce dot com. Goldmine is a company that has milked the database and not kept up with the times. Act! is also a stronger product. Goldmine's days are numbered, the database is still contact centric rather than account centric which makes it difficult to use in a business to business selling environment.
Very Helpful.......2005-08-12
The steps are easy to follow and now using more features on GoldMine. Has help simplify my records.
When they say dummies, they mean dummies.......2005-08-06
I was thinking this was going to be better than the manual or the help files. I thought wrong. I was hoping to get some insight to the technical side of GM. This is not that. Typically good dummies book - my low-ish rating is more my frustration in finding a technical GM reference.
Straight talk for regular folks........2005-08-06
Terrific, common-sense writing. As the Midwest's oldest public GoldMine training center, Publish or Perish, Inc. wouldn't be without it as a supplement for our professional training. If you want understandable how-to that's technically correct, and you're not a propeller-head, you really need this book!
Never a Dumb Buy "for Dummies" .......2005-07-22
I've been a fan of the "for Dummies" books for some time now. Although my exposure has only covered about a dozen titles, none of them disappoint.
GoldMine 6 is no exception. Perhaps some might think it dumb, I chose to purchase GoldMine 6 despite possessing GoldMine 5 by the same author...feeling confident that the information in "what's new in this release" would more than pay for the inevitable redundancy. It has, indeed.
Scott explains the use of GoldMine 6 in simple (not condescending) language, with a touch of humor and includes the all-important "bombs" alerting readers of potential loss of data or other pitfalls. He incorporates plenty of tips, sidebars and screenshots throughout the book. On occasion, I wish he would have gone into greater detail, but usually you can find enough direction in the software's online help to supplement the book's explanation.
An excellent buy.

Book Description
Gold on Ice takes a behind the scenes look at Canada's golden couple. At the 2002 Olympic winter games in Salt Lake City, gold medallist pairs skating couple Jamie Sal and David Pelletier inspired the imaginations and captured the hearts of millions of viewers from around the world and found themselves at the heart of International Olympic controversy. When Jamie Sale and David Pelletier finished second to Elena Berezhnaia and Anton Sikharulidze, after skating what was considered an incontestable perfect performance, there was an uproar of disapproval from Canada and several other nations. French judge Le Gougne later admitted that she had been pressured to place the Russians first. After an intense investigation, the International Olympic Committee, awarded a second gold medal to Sal and Pelletier acknowledging the injustice that had been committed. Gold on Ice details the investigations and political games that were uncovered at the 2002 Olympics and tells the story of the two skaters who did all the right things, dreamed all the right dreams and in the end made all the difference for future skaters. Beverley Smith chronicles the early lives and events of this dynamic pair - the disappointments and the triumphs - and the events leading up to and following the skate that would define their careers.
Customer Reviews:
Nice story of the Olympic champions.......2004-12-02
How nice for these skaters to be remembered in print for something other than one tough moment in their otherwise stellar careers - the Salt Lake Olympic Judging debacle. Smith gives a warm, intimate account of Sale and Pelletier, from their early training to their close personal relationship and other athletic triumphs. Recommend for fans of this pair, figure skating, and anyone who wants to learn more about this charming twosome and their REAL story....not just one moment.
2 Thumbs Up!!.......2003-02-10
This book has some great color photos of Jamie Salé and David Pelletier. It also has good detail on how they each got into the sport of figure skating. There were a couple problems that I had with the book:
1. The other did not write original captions for the pictures. They are exerps from the text.
2. The author wrote that Salé and Pelletier received scores of 5.7's and 5.8's from the judges for their long program. They actually received 5.8's and 5.9's.
The Brightest and the Best.......2002-09-28
What a Love Story! Anyone who watched the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City couln't help but feel for this young couple who skated their hearts out only to have their Olympic gold snatched from them by judges with their own political agenda. We will always remember their tears of sadness, then their tears of happiness when it was decided they did deserve a gold medal around their necks! The fact that they are a couple in real life made the story even more sweet. This book, while short on words, is not short on pictures which makes it well worth the money. These are two young people who definately have their hearts in the right place and they deserve every good thing that comes their way!

This is a rich compilation of photographs, essays, and timelines, breaking the 20th century up into decade-long sections such as "The Age of Big Business" (1900 to 1909) and "Challenging the Establishment" (1960 to 1969). A number of respected scholars (including what feels like the entire Yale history department) have produced the historical essays, while National Geographic experts deliver articles on topics such as "Adventure and Exploration," "Mapping Our World," and "Earth's Forces." The brief items in the timeline section try to maintain a balance between "history" and "popular culture"; thus, 1969's articles include information on Chappaquiddick, the Manson family, Northern Ireland, Woodstock, and Joe Namath.
Book Description
At the threshold of a new millennium, we look back on an extraordinary century, the most momentous and eventful in the history of humankind. In a hundred years that encompass both astonishing achievements and unparalleled horrors, the world has seen the greatest scientific triumphs ever imagined and the two most destructive wars ever fought. At the dawn of the 20th century, powered flight was a visionary dream. A mere seven decades later, American astronauts stood on the moon and gazed back at Earth. As old empires, fell, new superpowers arose to take their place. As new discoveries vastly increased our store of knowledge, new technologies shrank the globe and accelerated the pace of life. And as era succeeded era. National Geographic was there to chronicle our ever changing world.
Highlighted by 600 dramatic photographs and illustrations, this lavish and fascinating volume captures all the amazing variety of the 20th-century experience. Decade by decade, it presents the main themes and monumental events that transformed whole civilizations as well as the colorful details that shaped our daily lives. Here are authoritative essays on historical and cultural trends that reflect the moods and concerns of each decade, from America's arrival on the world stage at the start of the century to the increasing globalization that marks its end. Here too are year-by-year sidebars on important developments and personages, a yearly time line of modern milestones, and features on the subjects of special interest to generations of National Geographic readers. Along with these serious and informative sections, there's a treasury of delightful trivia and lighthearted lists of the people, the songs, the movies, and the accomplishments that gave each decade its unique flavor, from the first Teddy bear to the last episode of Seinfeld, from Kitty Hawk to Cape Kennedy, from Marconi to Microsoft and beyond.
This wonderful, wide-ranging portrait is colorful, comprehensive, compelling, entertaining, and utterly engrossing -- in short, a perfect mirror of the varied, vivid, vital century that it celebrates.
Customer Reviews:
good summary.......2003-07-17
Eyewitness to the 20th century is of typical National Geographic high quality. Each decade consists of one chapter. Each chapter egins with a summary of the decade. Each year is given a two page summary that highlights many of the trends and events of the year. At the bottom of the page there is a timeline that lists specific dates of important events that has happened during the year. In general, this book is a good summary of the past century and the major events.
A must for workplace trivia.......2000-05-11
This book is loaded with all things I should have already known, or better yet, learned in high school and promptly forgot. It is well laid out with a summary of the decade, then quick yearly details in easy-to-read and interesting short paragraphs. It's the essential handbook for all of us who want a foundation in history, but don't care enough to buy an entire book on every subject or person of interest.
An excellent overview!.......2000-01-28
Out of all the books outlining the events that shaped the twentieth century, I found this to be the most enjoyable and informative. Set up in an accessible, easy to read format, it details the major historical events of the past century, providing entertainment and education along the way.
The best century in review book I've found.......1999-12-02
I have found this book superior to those by Time, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. I especially like the year by year layout w/timeline that includes both hard data and trends & trivia of the period. You'll find it hard to put down.
Good review of the Century.......1999-08-13
While not a comprehensive account of the entire century there is enough here to get a good idea of what happened, who it happened to and why it happened. All things considered this a good buy that can be used as a launching pad for further research about any particular event in any year. It will point you in the right direction.
Book Description
This visually exciting and reader-friendly coverage of important events and trends that shaped the 20th century uses memorable and surprising photographs, chronologies, time lines, fact boxes on trends and trivia, and authoritative text from noted historians, scientists, and explorers to bring to life this remarkable century. Organized conveniently by decade, each section begins with an essay by an eminent historian that addresses the prevailing topic or issue of the decade. This is followed by twenty pages of yearly chronologies for each decade. These spreads are lively and self-contained, with handy reference features that make any year easy to find and understand. They cover events of serious national or worldwide importance as well as factors that affected the daily lives of millions of Americans. Between each decade are special thematic essays describing the National Geographic's long-standing contributions in the areas or archaeology, exploration, animal studies, photography, cartography, the environment, Earth's forces, underwater exploration, and space. Sprinkled throughout are spreads that highlight National Geographic magazine's own coverage of significant events of each decade.
Book Description
William Braud, Ph.D., is a highly regarded researcher in the field of transpersonal psychology, and "Distant Mental Influence" represents twenty years of his original thinking and experiments. A compilation of articles originally published in peer-reviewed journals between 1983 and 2000, "Distant Mental Influence" covers a diverse array of subject matter in the fields of biochemistry and transpersonal psychology. These twelve articles reveal Braud's discovery of experiments capable of measuring human interconnection and person-to-person influence across space and time.
Customer Reviews:
Proof for the "orthodox" naysayers..........2004-12-31
"Distant Mental Influence" is a book that the field of research on the abilties of human beings (and animals for that matter) was in desperate need of.
For decades the so-called "orthodox" scientific community has been denying overwhelming evidence that human beings can simply influence each other mentally and otherwise from a distance because there hadn't been any "proper" scientific research on this.
And, because it couldn't fit the dimensions of the often narrow-spaced theories they hold so dear. This book changes all that.In an impressive array of experiments conducted by sizey teams of scientists including psychologists, neurologists and other professionals needed for them as well as different teams of subjects who participated in them it was shown with a more than satisfying ratio of success that mental influence does of course occur and it does so in different applications and beyond physical obstacles.
The subjects of certain experiments were placed in shut tight rooms while the influencer was in a considerable distance. Moreover the subjects were not aware if, when, and how the influencer was going to attempt to influence them. Yet the results were always impressively succesful. Speaking of those results they will undoubtedly be very annoying to the hordes of deniers in the scientific community.
The implications put serious questions (as well as some sizeable dents) in many of the currently accepted theories. While all this will not be any news to many independent researchers or honest scientists who arent interested in an ill-perceived "reputation", it is a very important step in finally coming to terms with the fact that there's more than meets the eye concerning interconnectedness and even more than we think happens in our dimension.
As to the book it might be tiring for some readers since it's focused more on the technical side of the experiments and less so on the implications or even the explanations of the results. This is in a way understood since the explanations aren't fully grasped yet. And I'm using the word "fully" quite vaguely here. The authors are more concentrated in presenting the scientific properness of the experiments and making sure the science thereof cant be questioned than actually dealing with what their showings imply. Obviously an extra tome would be needed for the latter and one should remember that there's several books on the market (albeit widely ignored) that do deal with this aspect.
Overall, if you belong among those who've accepted what these experiments prove as fact long before they took place this book will be invaluable in your arsenal when you are faced with stubborn and myopic argumentators who insist on living in a microscopic and boring world. If not, then "Distant Mental Influence" will definetely urge you to revise whatever theories you've been entertaining thus far. And that's to say the very least.
EXCELLENT SUMMARY OF BRAUDS PATH-BREAKING RESEARCH.......2004-09-07
This is a superb book, ranking eg with Dean Radins "Conscious Universe". It is a summary of Brauds research over many years into what he terms "distant mental influence" ie the ability of people to influence (or not influence) objects and processes that are distant in space eg the ability of one person to calm another who is in a distant room and unaware of the attempt being made to influence them. Brauds research shows overwhelmingly that distant mental influence occurs and is much more frequent and more powerful than chance would suggest. He argues that the influence occurs in some unorthodox way (not by usual sensory routes eg sound or sight) and, whilst this might be very low frequency sound vibrations....it is more likely to be some as yet unexplored process perhaps to do with non-locality and the connectedness of all things.
The excellence of the book consists in the careful presentation of summaries of research papers, the extensive references and sources quoted, the thought-provoking introduction that sets the research in context, and the balanced quality of all the research and comment.
