Book Description

In the late 1800s John Ernst Worrell Keely claimed to have discovered a source of unlimited energy. For over 30 years his company survived, but never produced a product. This biography (originally published in 1893) seeks to explain the Keely mystery.

The author, Clara Bloomfield Moore, financed his work for many years.

Opinions on Keely are still sharply divided over a century later - those who call him a free energy pioneer versus those who refer to the "Keely Motor Bubble" as a stock fraud.

Chapter XIX, "Latent Force in Interstitial Spaces - Electro-Magnetic Radiation - Molecular Dissociation," was written by Keely.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest mystery of the 19th century.......2001-08-22

Did John Ernst Worrell Keely really discover a secret motive force in nature - or was he the greatest charlatan of the nineteenth century?

In 1874, Keely demonstrated a mysterious "force" to a group of hard-headed businessmen. His demonstration was so compelling that they launched the Keely Motor Company, and within five years it had capital stock of five million dollars.

Keely's experimental apparatus exhibited sensational results, although he failed to produce a marketable engine in more than twenty-five years of research and experimentation.

The inventor also developed a model airship (though never a full-scale prototype) many years before the first successfully powered Zeppelin.

Intellgent scientists who examined Keely's apparatus and experiments during his lifetime were unable to detect any irregularities in his "Compound Disintegrator," "Provisional Engine," "Musical Ball," "Globe Engine," "Vibratory Accumulator," and "Pneumatic Rocket Gun." Learned professors, shrewd businessmen, lawyers, and others watched awestruck as they saw the known laws of physics utterly violated. Keely was endorsed by men like Dr. J. M. Willcox, Professor Joseph Leidy, and Professor D. G. Brinton of the University of Pennsylvania.

Keely also found many supporters among Theosophists, who believed that he had liberated occult forces.

But investors wanted profits. Keely Motor Company shareholders sued. Keely went to jail for contempt of court for refusing to obey a court order to disclose his "secret" to a committee of experts.

At this low point in Keely's fortunes, Mrs. Clara Bloomfield Moore - poet, novelist, philanthropist - entered his life, became his campion, invested money, enlisted the support of reputable scientists, and wrote Keely and His Discoveries.

As a result of Mrs. Moore's efforts, Major Ricarde-Seaver, a Fellow of the Royal Society in Britain, went to Philadelphia to investigate Keely's work, and returned saying that Keely was working with and had apparent command over mysterious forces which were aboslutely unknown to him or to modern science.

Clara Bloomfield Moore's book, first published in 1893, is the only complete account of Keely's work and theories, and it includes his description of his discoveries and the hypotheses involved.

            Book Description

Just to say the name Vivien Leigh invokes two quick images to anyone familiar with motion pictures--Scarlett O'Hara and Blanche DuBois. Yet, Vivien Leigh did not want to be remembered wholly for her screen performances in Gone with the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire. This book is comprised of a biography describing Leigh's life, work, and travels. A chronology contains the important events and dates in her life and the people who were part of it. The stage appearances list cast and crew credits as well as the theater's in which a play was presented and the dates. The filmography, like the stage appearances, provides cast and crew credits and synopses. Molt lists the radio and television appearances, as well as the awards and nominations. Annotated discography and annotated bibliography follow. Assembled separately, posthumous tributes are the firsthand words and memories obtained by the author from those who knew Leigh or are knowledgeable about her. An index completes this excellent addition to Greenwood's Bio-Bibliography in the Performing Arts series.

jan harold is the best writer of the urban legend books. they have ben alot of immanters but his are the best. this one was second in the serires. the tile urban legend is well researched.

              5 out of 5 stars Well-Written and Enjoyable.......1999-07-26

I bought this book because the title was too strange to pass up. I found it to be thought-provoking and very well written. Although it's not a scary-story book, and the author proved all the legends weren't true, I didn't get any sleep the night after I read it! If you like spooky books, I highly reccomend "The Choking Doberman."

5 out of 5 stars An eye-opening and enjoyable read.......1998-03-19

The Choking Doberman, the second in a series of books examining urban legend and folklore, is a rare find not only for its attention to the friend-of-a-friend stories that we've all heard, but also for its perhaps unintended window into the evolution of modern legends. Written in 1986, the myths and legends regarding computers and other modern inventions reviewed in the book, as well as the means by which such stories were disseminated, reflect the growing influence of information technology -- old legends about "cable lice" proliferating in phone or power cables have given way to doomsday viruses and other computer-age legends. I also was amused to discover so many legends being integrated into movies and television, such as the "baby on the car roof" (Raising Arizona), the woman who punishes her philandering husband with superglue (Reservoir Dogs), etc. Just goes to show that a good story always deserves a retelling.

              5 out of 5 stars great series.......1998-01-13

My family and I have read the whole series and shared and laughed at these stories many times. They make a great share-read on family trips!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and fun follow-up to "The Vanishing Hitchhiker".......1997-10-09

The Choking Doberman (1984) is folklorist Jan Harold Brunvand's follow-up to The Vanishing Hitchhiker. Unlike that previous work, however, The Choking Doberman is less didactic and more just plain fun, with newer stories, a wider variety of legends, and less academic analysis. Highly recommended for general audiences.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful bridge humour.......2000-06-15

This is the second book in the "Monks of St.Titus" series in which we see the Abbot and his community spending as much time at the Bridge table as at Prayer. The book is presented as a collection of individual or grouped hands and there is no need to tackle these books in sequence. The hands are interesting and the presentation is very funny indeed.

The material originally appeared as a series of articles, written by David Bird, in various Bridge magazines. Terence Reese is credited with adding some polish and a famous name, to the book form.

The great appeal of this book is that the characters seem so real. Of course, you do not meet that many monks at the local bridge club, but you do meet people just like the Abbot and so on.

By setting part of the book with two monks working as misisonaries, the authors also have an opportunity to introduce a fair share of the zany too though.

The highlight of this book is the section in Africa where the missionaries win the trials to represent Upper Bhumpopo in the African championships and then travel to Tunis to play as internationals and have a shot at qualifying for the Bermuda Bowl. It's very funny and the hands are also interesting.

The hands are well chosen and the play problems presented all fit to the characters of the players involved. Often this gives a clue if you are trying to solve the problems before reading about them.

Any Bridge player with a sense of humour will love this book.

Anyone who has managed the process of developing or redesigning a Web site of significant size has likely learned the hard way the complexities, pitfalls, and cost risk of such an undertaking. While many Web development firms have fantastic technical expertise, what sets the topnotch organizations apart is the ability to accurately manage the planning and development process. Web Redesign: Workflow That Works directly addresses this crucial area with a specific, proven process.

This brief but important book lays out a specific five-step strategy--called the Core Process--that can always be applied to the development of Web sites and fine-tuned to almost any type of project. Each step--defining the project, developing site structure, visual design and testing, production and QA, and launch and beyond--contains three related but distinct tracks. The text begins with a brief overview of each of the steps, then delves deeper into each with detailed explanations as well as specific forms and project-management strategies. This book does not cover back-end, server-side programming. Instead, it focuses primarily on the visual, conventional components of a Web site.

Authors Kelly Goto and Emily Cotler compiled this book in an attractive, easy-to-read format. This process guide uses numerous full-color screen shots to illustrate site examples, as well as plenty of site diagrams and sample forms. The book even has a companion Web site with downloadable forms in PDF format to put the Core Process into immediate action. --Stephen W. Plain

                  Book Description

If anything, this volume's premise--that the business of Web design is one of constant change-has only proven truer over time. So much so, in fact, that the 12-month design cycles cited in the last edition have shrunk to 6 or even 3 months today. Which is why, more than ever, you need a smart, practical guide that demonstrates how to plan, budget, organize, and manage your Web redesign - or even you initial design - projects from conceptualization to launch. This volume delivers! In these pages Web designer extraordinaire Kelly Goto and coauthor Emily Cotler have distilled their real-world experience into a sound approach to Web redesign workflow that is as much about business priorities as it is about good design. By focusing on where these priorities intersect, Kelly and Emily get straight to the heart of the matter. Each chapter includes a case study that illustrates a key step in the process, and you'll find a plethora of forms, checklists, and worksheets that help you put knowledge into action.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book .......2007-04-11

This book is a good intro into how to manage a website implementation or redesign from the prospective of a designer. I am not a designer, but still found the book useful because it does cover all the steps; not just the ones that designers are concerned with. The book takes a good approach and is easy and interesting to read.

I have my quibbles with this book, but they are all very minor. It could stand an update, but what web book over 6 months old couldn't. I have to give it five stars because it is head and shoulders above anything else.

Despite being the best book I have read thus far on this topic, it's content now is a little dated. Certainly a worthwhile purchase, it outlines a typical site development workflow and now having deployed portions of this methodology in my workplace I know it works.

This is a good detailed process for designing and redesigning web sites. Great re-usable documents and worksheets to help you on your way. Details and describes the process very well with good examples.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the buy........2006-09-28

I found it a very useful book, especially with all the downloadable forms. I felt it was a little light on user testing - but otherwise, very good. It felt a bit repetitive and that things were presented in an odd order sometimes, but it's still worth the buy.

                    Book Description

When you have a child that doesn't fit in, what do you do? Debra Ginsberg knew that her son, Blaze, was unique from the moment he was born in 1987. What she didn't know was that Blaze's differences would be regarded by the outside world not as gifts, but as impediments to social and academic success. Blaze never crawled. He just got up and walked when he turned one. He called his mother 'Zsa Zsa' until he was three. By kindergarten, he loved the music of Miles Davis and Ella Fitzgerald. He fears butterflies and is fascinated by garbage trucks. With the same honesty that made Waiting a success, Raising Blaze: Bringing Up an Extraordinary Son in an Ordinary World chronicles Debra's experience in raising a child who has defied definition by the host of professionals who have sought to label his differences. Ginsberg introduces us to a remarkable child and her own unusual childhood. She writes about a family which shows us the redemptive power of faith, humour and love.

4 out of 5 stars The Beat of a Different Drummer.......2006-02-12

What would the world be like if we all didn't want to stand in line, sit on our name at circle time, or refuse to eat sandwiches? I imagine that there would be some chaos in the world, but I don't think that the world would come to an end.

This is the story of a little boy who walked to the beat of a different drummer, and his mother's struggle with the school teachers and personnel to hear the beautiful song that he was playing.

The book gives plenty of insight on what it's like to be Debra, but we don't get much insight on what it's like to be Blaze. Of course, Debra wrote the book so it's only logical that we would know her better. I would have liked to have heard more about Blaze outside of school. What did he like to do at home, what kind of conversations did they have? Most of all, what is he doing now? Is he in high school, or being home-schooled? I'll just have to wait for the sequel.

                    4 out of 5 stars good book.......2005-08-12

I am not a doctor but from reading this book about Blaze, I suspect his problems are caused by a combination of the breathing problem at birth and thimerisol (mercury) in vaccines given to babies at that time. I tried to email Ms. Ginsberg about this but her web site was down.

5 out of 5 stars For all the children who think Tuesday is blue.......2005-06-02

Our society loves to pigeonhole kids, and the educational system is the worst. My own experiences with public schools led me to home schooling in the 1970s, which makes my mother a pioneer. Back then though people looked at her as though she had just arrived from Mars. I made the leap to private school at twelve. Twenty-one years, three books and a master's in professional writing later, I can see the educational system hasn't gotten any better. In its defense, the US educational system tends to squeeze the life and curiosity out of students and teachers.

Even Debra Ginsberg, who spoke last year at the Palm Springs Writers' Conference, admits that she fell prey to the same blinders people often show towards kids who don't fit the "sit down and be quiet" mold in public schools. (The liberal elite expresses horror at the elitism of private schools while sending their kids to them, and horror at religious schools while ignoring the discipline and respect kids can receive.) She has difficulty with teachers offering diagnoses of "problem kids"---a valid point. but she has sympathy and respect for the teachers themselves. Principals are often portrayed as bad guys, but one principal of Ginsberg's son Blaze's school writes upon retirement:

"It has been a real pleasure to know you and Blaze. I have appreciated the benefits of the positive approach your entire family takesm as each person helps Blaze to grow while making it clear that he is well-loved. You have done a great job of supporting him this year. He is in good hands as a member of your family."

Single-mom waitress Ginsberg has a strong, loving family of eccentrics that make Katharine Hepburn's family (as depicted in "The Aviator") pale in comparison. Coming out of people who think outside the box (and yet know how to work the system), how could Blaze be other than extraordinary? Sure, he doesn't color inside the lines or sit in line, but the overwhelming positive embrace of his abilities and personality in this book shows that there is a place for everyone, even in a world where we can't see past the surface and glibness masquerades as wisdom. Ginsberg offers no excuses for her son; she doesn't ask for any pity or portray herself as a victim. This is not a whining memoir. She shows how her family helps Blaze to grow and to conform in the way that everyone has to ("Go along! Go along! Go Along!" mocks Henry David Thoreau in THE NIGHT THOREAU SPENT IN JAIL) for pleasant social interaction, but she also accepts and acknowledges that Blaze has a right to be different, e,g, not eating sandwiches. So do we all.

There are marvelously funny, poignant moments in this book, and Blaze's poem "Breanna Crying" as well as his songs are not to be missed.

                    5 out of 5 stars Honest & Courageous.......2005-05-04

This book is a must-read for all moms of "extraordinary" kids everywhere! It is also a great book for family members and teachers of kids on the PDD/Autism spectrum, to help them understand what we go through as moms, and the frequent confusion/uncertainty of any diagnosis.
I was encouraged and inspired by her bravery in standing up to the "system", her willingness to sacrifice for her son, and moved to tears many times by their struggles. I admire her honesty in revealing parts of her life she must have known many would judge or be critical of. The result is a book we can truly relate to, written by a mom who is imperfect (like the rest of us), who simply wants what is best for her son.

5 out of 5 stars Really great view into a quirky autism spectrum family.......2003-10-13

Debra Ginsberg doesn't like labels, that may be the main theme of the book.

I do like lables. I have one, I am autistic, I have another, I have Asperger's syndrome.

I would say that Debra's son probably could get an AS diagnosis and may have one by now. So in spite of her view of labels, I think it's a good book to read if you have AS yourself or have a child with AS.

The descriptions of good, bad, indifferent and truly hideous school district staff and teachers are great. I had forgotten about the power that teachers can have over families and the visciousness that they can dump onto parents and kids. That all came back to me in reading this book. It's post traumatic IEP syndrome. (yes, some teachers are fabulous)

I'm glad she gave such a detailed view of her extended family and I'm very glad that she and Blaze had them for support.

I hope Blaze is doing well.

This wonderful book contains beautiful pictures of the last Romanovs. I own about 50 books related to Tsar Nicholas II, and this one is my favorite!

                        5 out of 5 stars Incredible!!.......2005-06-29

This book is THE best pictorial/essay on the last Romanovs. I am a Russian history buff and probably have most, if not all, books on the Romanov family (up to this last Tsar-Nicholas II) and this book is by far the most interesting and fascinating with many photos that have never been published before. This book remains close at hand since I find that I go back to it to either re-read, or use as a reference as I am reading another book. It definately belongs in your library if you find that this time in history is of interest to you.

5 out of 5 stars The best Romanov book out there!.......2004-03-21

If you are the type of Romanov buff that really enjoys seeing a good deal of photos of the family as you read, then this is the book you need to get. This book is awsome, the pages are filled with photographs of the family. Some of the pictures take up the entire page. The photographs range from Nicholas's family, to Alexandra's family, and then to the family they made together as the Tsar and Tsarina of Russia. Some of the photographs are really rare, that have not been seen in other books. You will really appreciate that when you look through this truly well accomplished book.
When you have had your fun looking at all the great photographs thats when you should start to sit down and read the book. The text is so rich and well written. The author goes into great detail in describing the life of this wonderful family. Each major event of their life is carefully laid out into a well researched story. It's an easy read that is not at all boring or misleading. The book is not entirely political, which is a big plus to me. If you just want to educate yourself more on this extrodinary family, don't get a book that is completely focused on Russian politics of the period. This book is the one to buy and trust me it is well worth the money.

This book is too good for words!!!! The pictures are wonderful and the text is just as good. I suggest this book to anyone. It is worth it!!!

                        5 out of 5 stars ASTONISHING!.......2003-04-10

This is an astonishing book about the last Imperial Family of Russia. Crisp text backed up with amazing and wonderful array of exclusive, never-before seen photographs from the Russian State Archive. Truly, a book that will change your view on the Romanovs.
Highly recommended to those who build a library on the Romanovs.
                        Great job, Leppi Publications!!!

                        2 out of 5 stars Hmm..........2007-07-24

This was an OK book...I planned to use it for altered books and art journals, and I'm afraid that the number of images (few) and the types of images (limited) kind of limit this book's usefulness. The thing I didn't like is, there are one, two, even three pages wit hthe same stuff on them. And it's not a bunch of little related images; it's a whole page out of some ancient book that doesn't look like it will lend itself very well to cutting and pasting this or that very particular image out of the whole scene.

If you're looking for many intricate images of the same thing (the human skeleton, for instance, or the mechanical plans of some old-fashioned machine) then this is for you. If you're looking for just 1 or 2 smaller images per topic but with many topics (like most of the other clip art books by this publisher) then you may not find this to be of much use to you.

                        4 out of 5 stars A valuable resource.......2005-01-23

This book was a valuable resource when I designed a Biology-themed project. The images are well-rendered and the book scans well enough. The variety is good enough for the price, but for less desirable subjects such as fungi, ferns, and even some aspects of meteorology the depiction leaves something to be desired. However, (especially) for dicots, astronomy, anthropology, and ornithology, the drawings are superb.
