As an owner of a small business, I'm always reading and keeping up with the tax laws, and ways to implement legal tax avoidance strategies. I have read quite a few books on the subject. Mr. Fellman's book is technically accurate, however I had trouble with his "joking" style of writing. I suppose he is trying to make a dry subject more interesting, but I found the style to be condescending and that it sometimes made the material more confusing than it is. Yes, the tax laws are tangled, but I prefer to read without the joking, questionairre format. A more readable, straightforward book on the subject is Robert Cooke's Doing Business Tax Free. Also, for a true in-depth reference volume of the small business owner's tax avoidance options, I found it helpful to skim & reference the very thick, but very informative, How to Pay Zero Taxes by Jeff Schepper.

5 out of 5 stars A big time book.......2001-12-05

This is one of those gems you get lucky on, stumbling across it at the local bookstore. That's what happened to me last week and I haven't put the book down since buying it.

Moore has a fantastic eye for detail and depth, and a wonderful ear for verse. For those of you who think all of the great stories in college athletics happen at Notre Dame or your local Division I university, I suggest you get this book.

Moore chronicles life at a Division III university (Chapman) in Southern California. Proving that a good story can be found anywhere, Moore tells the intersting tales of coaches and athletes at a small college. Like D-I athletes, they hit game-winning home runs, have great successes, and experience disappointing failures. There are many heart rendering stories to be told at any athletic venue, and Moore finds many at Chapman.

Moore worked as an athletic administrator at the school, but he didn't sit idle pushing papers or crunching numbers. He went out and got to know the athletes and coaches, even running miles with some of the distance runners. There's great context to this book.

At the same time he doesn't slip into the old cliche of making every small college experience seem quaint and cute, like most sportswriters. Moore explains the drawbacks, as well as the positives to the Division III experience.

I wish more people knew about this book. Perhaps Chapman Press could promote it a little better.

It truly is a wonderful read.

4 out of 5 stars Not So Small Time After All.......2000-05-17

Is the definition of "big time" based soley on whether a college offers athletic scholarships to its students? Maybe in some peoples' eyes.

After reading this book, I came to realize that the true definition of "big time" should be based on the hearts of the athletes themselves. Those students who play for the love of their sport, and somehow manage to maintain their grades and prepare themselves for a life outside sports at the same time.

Mr Moore writes about Chapman University and its athletes with humor, love, and admiration. I would challenge anyone to come away from reading this book and not have found a game, or an athlete, who touched them deeply, and made them remember something wonderful about their own college experience.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves sports, not for the glitz and glamour, but for the athletes who sweat, bleed, and live, simply to play the game.

Book Description

The people who directed, produced, and starred in the scary and fantastic movies of the genre heyday over thirty years ago created memorable experiences as well as memorable movies. This McFarland Classic brings together over fifty interviews with the directors, producers, actors, and make-up artists of science fiction and horror films of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. From B movies to classics, Samuel Z. Arkoff to Acquanetta, these veteran vampire baits, swamp monsters, and flying saucers attackees share their memories.
This classic volume represents the union of two previous volumes: Interviews with B Science Fiction and Horror Movie Makers ("more fun than the lovably cheap movies that inspired it"-Booklist/RBB); and Science Fiction Stars and Horror Heroes ("candid...a must" -ARBA). Together at last, this combined collection of interviews offers a candid and delightful perspective on the movies that still make audiences squeal with fear, and occasionally, howl with laughter.

This collection of interviews is a must have for anyone interested in horror/science fiction films and the people that helped create them. Tom Weaver does a typically excellent job of asking the right questions to a host of famous and lesser known contributors to the genre.

Book Description

In this pioneering work of cultural history, historian Anthony Harkins argues that the hillbilly-in his various guises of "briar hopper," "brush ape," "ridge runner," and "white trash"-has been viewed by mainstream Americans simultaneously as a violent degenerate who threatens the modern order and as a keeper of traditional values of family, home, and physical production, and thus symbolic of a nostalgic past free of the problems of contemporary life. "Hillbilly" signifies both rugged individualism and stubborn backwardness, strong family and kin networks but also inbreeding and bloody feuds. Spanning film, literature, and the entire expanse of American popular culture, from D. W. Griffith to hillbilly music to the Internet, Harkins illustrates how the image of the hillbilly has consistently served as both a marker of social derision and regional pride. He traces the corresponding changes in representations of the hillbilly from late-nineteenth century America, through the great Depression, the mass migrations of Southern Appalachians in the 1940s and 1950s, the War on Poverty in the mid 1960s, and to the present day. Harkins also argues that images of hillbillies have played a critical role in the construction of whiteness and modernity in twentieth century America. Richly illustrated with dozens of photographs, drawings, and film and television stills, this unique book stands as a testament to the enduring place of the hillbilly in the American imagination.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Ever--I'd give it 10 Stars If They'd Let Me.......2006-07-17

This is simply the best book on the subject--I use it in my research, and as I do I am continually impressed with the depth of research and documentation and also with the author's interpretations and analyses.

4 out of 5 stars well-researched and fascinating.......2005-07-02

Harkins is a professor at Western Kentucky University, and his academic background is reflected in the writing of this book. It's pretty analytical, throwing tons of facts and research tidbits at the reader, occasionally drawing conclusions or extrapolating from data or hypothesizing. It's not the driest of academic texts though; i wasn't rolling my eyes at any overusage of "trendy" academic semantic BS (by which i mean, he doesn't say things like "in order to appreciate the resonance of the cultural icon, we must unpack the meaning intrinsic to the tropes of hillbilly semiotics" or whatever-the-heck). Chapter by chapter, he traces the development and metamorphosis of the concept of "hillbillies" and all the various meanings of the word, from noble mountaineers to gun-shooting moonshiners to inbred rapist morons to string-band radio stars. The text is full of dozens of illustrations, vintage photography, advertisement reproductions, and cartoons which illustrate his various points. It's not a quick read or a mindless read, but rather, it's fascinating, well-researched, and if you like sociology and cultural studies and various looks at rural cultures, I recommend it.

I expected better and more advanced information on MS Project. Unfortunately this manual covers only the basics, although it does a very good job doing it.
Remember when you use to purchase software and it included a Manual?
Kind of dissapointed of the sustance (or lack of) for advance users.

3 out of 5 stars Better books out there on MS Project.......2004-09-23

Not the best book out there for MS Project. It didn't really seem like the author was a power user. Some of the directions are very superficial and not very useful. Not a good book at all for Project Server administration. Get more bang for your buck with MS Project Special Edition.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book For Rookies and Pros.......2004-03-09

I needed to learn the ins and out of Microsoft Project in a weekend. The book was the best reference for me to do so. It took me step by step to learnings all the quirks and strategies when working with project.

I still use it as a reference in my work today and may have to buy another because I am wearing it down so much. It is a very easy book to reference and I would recommend it to any Project user.

3 out of 5 stars Read the Online Help for Project Pro and PWA.......2004-03-09

I was somewhat disappointed. The things I had questions about weren't covered any more deeply in this book than in the Microsoft Help. Download and read the Microsoft Online books that cover administering and installing Project Server for a free alternative.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference for Project Pro, still too light on Server.......2004-01-20

As an EPM consultant, a good thorough reference book is absolutely essential for me. I have carried my copy of Project 2002 Inside Out all over the country with me and have just about worn it out. I ordered a copy of Project 2003 Inside Out the day it became available, and have recommended it to several clients, all of whom have bought it and thanked me for it.

The Inside Out books are wonderful, complete references on Project Professional, but they don't go into anywhere near the same level of detail on Project Server or Project Web Access. Granted, if they did, both the 2002 and 2003 versions would have been 10,000 pages long, rather than the current 1,000 or so.

This book will help you answer pretty much any quesiton you've got about Project Pro, and that tends to be where most of the questions are. As a reference, this is a great tool. The index is thorough, the detailed TOC is very easy to use, and there is a TON on information in here.

To be fair, I have to say that the 2003 version does cover more of Project Server and PWA than 2002 did. However, it's still just barely scratching the surface. If Ms. Stover would cover only the security model, that would be a huge step forward.

Bottom line: If you're going to be using Project 2003, either stand alone or in a full-blown Enterprise Project Management scenario, Project 2003 Inside Out is a great tool. I recommend it enthusiasticly.

"All who know Coe’s own work expected something extraordinary. Our expectations are surpassed. This may well be one of the finest literary biographies ever written…As much as possible, Coe lets Johnson’s own words and the words of those who knew him speak here, content to give support in the unobtrusive manner of a fine accompanist…Long after the reading, the impression persists that Coe may have given us that very “representation of the inside of my mind” to which Johnson aspired. And this, of course, both in intent and in execution, whether novel or biography, is the highest art.” -James Sallis, The Boston Globe

“The best literary biography in years…In its artfully fragmented structure, autobiographical inserts, and circular conceits, Like a Fiery Elephantadopts Johnson’s own imperatives (all is chaos, you canonly write about yourself) even while questioning them.” - The Village Voice

“Let me say-flat out and without the usual reviewer’s cavils-that this is a wonderful biography…Coe reveals the multifaceted artist in all his intensity and periodic bellicosity…Perhaps best of all, Coe lays out the threads of Johnson’s life, shows how they may be convincingly knotted together and then chooses to leave them largely ‘untied, untidily.’” -Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book World

            4 out of 5 stars A Writer of Merit.......2007-07-05

This biographer wrote about a man whom 99% of readers have never read his books. And he does it well. Johnson wanted to push into the future and not repeat the linear exposition of novels that remain popular today. Johnson was a literary artist, not a bestselling author. Coe recognizes this and should be acclaimed for the honest and careful style he uses as a biographer to explain Johnson and his work. Johnson influences many writers today who seek the leading edge.

5 out of 5 stars takes the biography on to a whole new level.......2006-03-13

Coe has taken a subject known for his experimentation in fiction and produced a delightfully experimental biography.

Johnson was a difficult character and, at times, an unlikeable person. Overly arrogant concerning his talents and constantly annoyed at his lack of sales the reader of this study will find it hard to warm to him.

Nonetheless, he did genuinely try to innovate with his fiction and I am a big fan of his experimental writing. As with many experiments, they don't all work, but I respect him for trying and find his failures more interesting than a lot of writers' successes.

Coe has constructed this book in four parts.

The first is broadly a critical analysis of his work, focussing on his novels in chronological order. This is an insightful and measured look at the books and adds a great deal for both the fan and reader new to Johnson's work. This is a section which will be re-read by many each time they tackle one of his books.

The second, and major bulk of the biography, is a life told in 160 fragments. Here Coe tells the story of BSJ's life through a collection of writings - diaries, letters, notes, published and unpublished work. It is a wonderful way to let the reader into BSJ's state of mind and the finest moments are the many times that BSJ rants at an editor or agent for not selling enough of his books.

The third is a neat collection of quotes from people interviewed for the book. Memories and views on BSJ from friends and colleagues.

The final part is a fascinating piece of detective work from Coe, piecing together BSJ's last days.

I cannot remember having read a more imaginative, honest or thought-provoking biography. This is a masterpiece and deserves a wide audience.

The Washington Post reviewer betrays his own mindset when he allows that Johnson's ALBERT ANGELO to be "an impressive novel, though redolent of 60s experimentalism," in which the word "though" stands out like a red flag. What does he mean, "though"? Read the sentence without "though" and it would represent my point of view. Oh well to each his own. But I say, what's wrong with 60s experimentalism? You'd think it was a taint of some kind.

The truth is that Bryan Johnson, ill read and ill served by his publishers (though he couldn't have been easy to handle) is a far more interesting author than Jonathan Coe, no matter how many awards the latter has received. The whole project had a quixotic tilt for Coe, who seems to have regarded himself very reflexively, for of course he is constantly having to defend his own bourgeois conception of the novel against the avant-garde of Johnson and, say Beckett, and constantly he is shading his generally well thought out exegeses on Johnson's books (a few of which I have not read) by citing their inhuman, formalist coldness, a quality he abhors, a quality that he believes contributes to the "deadness" of experimental writing.

So it's a funny book in many ways, and yet I am grateful to Coe for writing it, for it establishes a context, no matter how skewed, by which he might form a coherent view of BS Johnson's life and times. And surely we owe him a huge debt of gratitude if only for spending eight years interviewing many souls (and many who have since passed on) who knew Johnson and who otherwise would have let their knowledge go quietly into the grave of experimentalism in England. It is a rich turf, nearly unknown, terra incognita and nearly untouched by biographers.

All in all, a splendid book, a book you can lose yourself in, and perfect for long winter nights

5 out of 5 stars "Telling stories is telling lies".......2005-06-18

You may love BS Johnson, you may never have heard of him, but if you're interested in writing - how to write, why to write, what does it all mean? - this book is wonderful: interesting, enjoyable, thought-provoking, but most of all, somehow heartwarming, even though it is about a writer who killed himself.

In a way, this is the biography of BS Johnson that BSJ himself would have wanted (and then some). I'm not talking about the content particularly, although Johnson's life has been rigorously researched and then described in fascinating detail, but the tone and form of the biography. It holds a mirror up to what Johnson was trying to do with his own (mostly autobiographical) novels and reflects as much as it can back at you. Johnson had two strongly (passionately, belligerently) held beliefs about the novel. First was the idea that 'telling stories was telling lies' and he tried to make his writing as honest as possible (or did he? is there in fact as much artifice in the 'truth' he writes about as in any work of fiction?), writing mostly about himself and his experiences. He didn't believe in 'fiction' but he did believe in the 'novel' and his second strong belief was that James Joyce's Ulysess changed the novel so significantly that to act as if it had never happened was tantamount to treason, instead the novel must continue to evolve. An experimental writer (although Johnson himself disputed this term, claiming his experiments were just that and never submitted to publishers), his most common experiment was with form - using whatever form he felt best suited his material.

And that is exactly what Jonathan Coe has done. He grapples with the act of writing biography, how to get at 'the truth', how to write honestly about someone you never knew, and he freely admits when he's guessing or extrapolating. He talks personally about his experience of Johnson, as a teenager, a student, a biographer, a fan, but also as a successful novelist, standing in direct opposition to Johnson, not just because Coe is admired by the literary establishment but because he creates fantastic stories/'lies'(although is it just coincidence that Coe's novel The Rotters Club, written at the same time as this biography, is more strongly rooted in his own past than any before?). And then, having collected all his biographical evidence, Coe creates a narrative out of it by using whatever form works best to 'tell the story' - usually directly quoting from a friend, an irate letter of Johnson's, one of his poems, screenplays or novels. This is done most evocatively towards the end of the biography in one section that consists solely of recollections from friends and Johnson's widow.

BS Johnson himself, of course, is the only person who could ever reveal the real truth behind the truth, what really went on 'inside his skull', but Coe manages to reveal the heart of the man. While Johnson could dismiss Coe's tentative Coda suggesting what might have led up to his suicide, BSJ and the rest of us can only admire this honest, passionate, playful portrayal of a troubled, confused man, a single-minded writer, and writing itself.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest of All Greek Historians.......2007-06-26

The greatest of all Greek historians was the Athenian general Thucydides (455-400 B.C.E.). Thucydides' classic work, "History Of The Peloponnesian War", provides us with the historical framework for 5th century Greece, a golden age of intellectual achievement and creativity rarely equaled in human history. This history is by far the best account of the bitter war between Athens and Sparta as well as the only surviving contemporary record of the rise of the Athenian empire. Thucydides as a master storyteller does not just cover the battle scenes; he records the great political speeches of Pericles, leader of Athens, and Lysander leader of Sparta with great acumen. He is recognized as the first historian to actually go and get eyewitness accounts, visit battlefieilds and research documents and records. This work took him over 20 years and it shows!

The lessons he teaches about imperial over reaching and unreasonable peace settlements are prescient today as they were during his times. President Woodrow Wilson, read this book on his voyage across the Atlantic to the Versailles Peace Conference and vociferously fought the other Allies in making unreasonable demands of the Germans. Wilson learned the dangers that the world would be placed in by backing the Germans into a corner politically and economically from Thucydides book.

I never before recommended reading an abridged work of history; however, Paul Woodruff does the best job of abridging Thucydides that I have ever come across in historical texts. He gives you the basic narrative and makes sure to include all of the important orations and debates from the original work.

As a graduate student in philosophy and history, I heartily recommend this timeless classic to anyone who is interested in political philosophy, and history. I also recommend you read it with David Cartwright's "A Historical Commentary On Thucydides."

5 out of 5 stars Philosophy; Tragic History; and Greek Geopolitics.......2004-06-26

I agree with the first reviewer: this book is a great condensation of Thucydides' work. The book is editted to retain all of Thucydides' great insights into human nature, power, and politics, but summarized in a way where all of the essential details of the story are left in place.

With its sweeping description of events in various areas of the Greece, and its dramatic portrayal of historic figures: the book works as a great description of the nature of politics, democracy and war, and at the same time an engaging study of leadership, and the men who were perported to be great during these times.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Distillation of Thucydides' Genius.......2003-10-05

I can't think of another abridgment of a classic more after my own heart. I am a passionate believer in reading all of Thucydides, but this book is still the ideal way to get to know what is great about the historian. (And, as our democracy is at war & struggles with imperial entanglements, Thuc. is more relevant than ever.)

Basically, Woodruff has an unerring instinct for where Thucydides (not a mere fact-compiler, but one of antiquity's great thinkers) is at his sizzling & profound best. The introduction is a marvelous piece of criticism and analysis: in merely 24 pp. it acquaints the reader with Thucydides' important ideas. The idea of this book is to give you 185 pp. to read cover-to-cover (if not in a single sitting!--what are you waiting for?--do it, and blow your mind). Woodruff's connecting summaries & brief introductory comments to each excerpt make sure that readers will experience the whole coherently.

My one quibble is that I'd like to have the defeat of the Sicilian Expedition & its aftermath in all its gruesome detail, but this would have almost doubled the size of the book and defeated the purposes I've praised above. For a complete translation, try Lattimore (also pub. by Hackett)--or, if 17th c. English doesn't bother you, Hobbes' translation is a real treat to savor.

              Book Description

Stimulating and often startling discussions between three friends, all highly original thinkers: Rupert Sheldrake, controversial biologist, Terence McKenna , psychedelic visionary, and Ralph Abraham , chaos mathematician. Their passion is to break out of paradigms that retard our evolution and to explore new possibilities. Through challenge and synergy they venture where few have gone before, leading their readers on an exciting journey of discovery. Their discussions focus on the evolution of the mind, the role of psychedelics, skepticism, the psychic powers of animals, the structure of time, the life of the heavens, the nature of God, and transformations of consciousness.

"Three fine thinkers take us plunging into the universe of chaos, mind, and spirit. Instead of leaving us lost, they bring us back with startling insights and more wonder than we knew we had." -Matthew Fox, Original Blessing and Sheer Joy

"A jam-session of the mind, an intellectual movable feast, an on-going conversation that began over twenty years ago and remains as lively and relevant today as it ever was. Sadly, Terence had to leave the conversation a little earlier than planned. But the appearance of this book of trialogues at this critical, historical juncture is a reaffirmation of the potency of the optimistic vision that the trialogues express." -Dennis McKenna, brother of the late Terence McKenna

Rupert Sheldrake is a biologist and author of many books including The Sense of Being Stared At, And Other Aspects of the Extended Mind. Ralph Abraham is a mathematician, one of the pioneers of chaos theory and the author of several books including Chaos, Gaia, Eros: A Chaos Pioneer Uncovers the Three Great Streams of History. The late Terence McKenna was a scholar of shamanism, ethno-botanist, psychedelic researcher and author of many books including Food of the Gods and True Hallucinations.

I can honestly say this is one of the best books I've ever read, truly mind-expanding, profoundly important in every way. The breadth of knowledge brought to the subjects through the trialogues was awesome. I was first attracted to the book by Terence McKenna, who I love; this was my first exposure to Rupert and Ralph (the combo is great!). For any McKenna fan this book is essential to your collection, full of new material not found in his other works.

5 out of 5 stars Not To Worry..........2005-08-19

I had been waiting for someone to come along and put a note up about this recently released book and comment on whether it was essentially just "Chaos, Creativity and Cosmic Consciousness" repackaged.

Finally, I took the plunge and ordered it and I am happy to say that no, it is not the same book as "C, C and C." The chapters in this book feature further talks by the three thinkers at Esalen.

However, I'm pretty sure that the content in both this book and "C, C and C" were included in the original publication "Trialogues at the Edge of the West" - but since that book has been out of print for years, it's unlikely that many would have it.

5 out of 5 stars if you liked 'what the bleep' you'll love this book.......2005-07-11

What a great read! like a rollorcoaster through a cosmos of meanting, these three great minds explore the dimensions of trancendental attractors, end-time apocalyptic visions, the psychic powers of animals, the nature of time, God and a letter from the Christian mystic Father Bede Griffiths who was Sheldrake's spritual guide. These famous 'trialogues' recorded at Esalen also reveal a touching portraint of an intellectual friendship grown ripe over the years of testing each others mettle. Also, recommended is Chaos, Creativity and Consciouness by the same authors.

"… the `proof' of man's destruction of the environment is consistently flawed. … the scientific method is being abused and ignored. The errors are not random, however, but are systematically biased toward attempting to prove the guilt of man in the alleged destruction of the planet. Objective science is disappearing and is being replaced by the pursuit of a philosophical agenda." — Richard F. Sanford in Environmentalism and the Assault on Reason Chapter 1 "The public has numerous misconceptions about the relationship between environmental pollution and human cancer. Underlying these misconceptions is an erroneous belief that nature is benign." — Bruce N. Ames, Ph.D. and Lois Swirsky Gold, Ph.D in Environmental Pollution and Cancer: Some Misconceptions Chapter 7 "Greenhouse gases have been increasing in the atmosphere, largely as a result of human activities. However, the climate record does not show the temperature increase and other telltale signs of the expected greenhouse effect. The mathematical models used for predicting such effects are evidently not complete enough to encompass all of the relevant physical processes in the atmosphere, thus throwing grave doubt on the drastic warming hypothesized for the next century." — S. Fred Singer in Global Climate Change: Facts and Fiction Chapter 13 "… There is now no prima-facie case for any expensive policy of safeguarding species without more extensive analysis than has so far been done." — Julian L. Simon in Disappearing Species, Deforestation and Data Chapter 26

As an engineer I've been trained to draw conclusions based on data. I've been frustrated by the junk science that dominates the discussion of environmental issues. This scholarly, yet readable, work puts to rest the many myths propogated by psuedo-scientists with a political agenda to promote. It presents leading experts in a wide variety of fields who explain the relevant facts in the context of solid theory. The reader will come away with a deeper understanding of the situation which is: there are real problems, but they can be solved without the burden of massive regulation of our lives.

              5 out of 5 stars Rational Readings.......2000-07-13

Rational Readings is a massive compilation of essays written by the worlds top scientists on today's most discussed topics. Void of doom and gloom predictions that we hear so much about through the scare tactics of the media and political groups, Rational Readings gives us the truth about today's environment concerns. In response to the review from Wisconsin, I find it humorous that this reader could possibly think that all of these world renowned scientists have come together to write a reference book to support their common political agenda. Perhaps the spreading of truth should be a more common political movement. My compliments and many thanks to the contributing scientists and to the editor, Dr. Jay Lehr for putting together this great reference book.

1 out of 5 stars Irrational readings for political reasons.......1999-07-09

As a scientist, I am embarrassed and outraged that this tome contains a myriad of errors and makes a number of outrageously hilarious statements: for example, the authors claim that acid rain is beneficial because it removes "unwanted" organisms from lakes and streams, and thus creates a "pristine environment" for swimmers and bathers. Of course, this ignores the effects of acid rain on ecosystem functioning in terms of multi-trophic interactions and ultimately, stability. Other topics are handled in a similarly contemptible fashion. This book is a perfect example of science distorted to support a political agenda. Certainly, its one of the LEAST scientific books on the subject that I have read in a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars A Common Sense Review of the Environmental Debate!.......1997-12-18

A big read! But easy and extremely informative and full of references. The various authors of the essays contained within are not social scientists, but scientists within the field of which they write. They debunk and explain in laymans terms for the most part, the arguments and evidence against the "chicken little" attitudes of the modern environmentalists and the political and media agenda. It is not a book that you pick up and read in a couple of days in your spare time. It is a superior reference book for the layman to use to question and make sense of the environmental activism of our period. If you buy this book you will want to throw rocks at your television or radio every time you hear an environmental PSA or listen to the evening news or read a magazine or your daily newspaper, warning you about such and such peril and how we must turn over our freedoms and money to the environmentalists and government. You will be more able to tell what is fraud and what is not.
