    Book Description

Tom Slick was a legend among the "independents"--those who hunted for oil the way mountain men hunted for furs. Ray Miles traces the growth of Slick's career and the modern petroleum industry, including the oil conservation movement, of which Slick was an early proponent. He examines the first generation of oilmen who sought fortunes in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas and looks at Slick's unique hands-on business style of brokering on street corners and eschewing stockholders and board members. In 1929, Slick sold his Oklahoma holdings in the Prairie Oil and Gas Company--the largest sale of oil properties by an individual to that date.

". . . Miles gives us a highly readable biography of an intriguing person and a welcome addition to the history of oil's first century."--Southwestern Historical Quarterly

" . . . an informative and well-written account of the life of one of the most successful and best known independents of an earlier time. It belongs on the shelf of any reader with special interest in the histories of the domestic oil industry and of Oklahoma."--Western Historical Quarterly

      Book Description

Of all the great National Football League coaches, none have enjoyed the respect and reputation that Vince Lombardi earned during his tenure as head coach of the Green Bay Packers. Both feared and beloved by players and peers, Lombardi coached the Packers to five NFL championships and victories in the first two Super Bowls ever played. Over ten seasons, his Green Bay teams compiled a remarkable 98-30-4 record, although it was Lombardi's relentless, uncompromising tactics and values that defined him and his career more than the victories themselves.

I Remember Vince Lombardi takes readers back to a bygone era when professional football was a game of guts, grit, and spit. Lombardi embodied greatness, and he demanded it from his staff and players. In this book, dozens of people who knew him recount their favorite memories of him in their own words, including former players, assistant coaches, opponents, and league officials. What they reveal is a man who was a genuine legend on and off the field.

Included are his days as an assistant coach for the New York Giants with colleague Tom Landry, the "Ice Bowl" NFL title game of 1966, his two Super Bowl victories, his sudden departure from the Packers, and his short-lived position as coach of the Washington Redskins. Many aspects of his personal and professional lives are covered, offering a refreshing look at one of football's greatest icons.

I really like the book. Her research is done with a select population of women, most of whom went to private schools as children. Thus there is an inherent bias but I think it brings a tangible light to the real divide that continues to grow between classes in America. This was a required reading for a Masters in Education class.

2 out of 5 stars Review for Dividing Classes.......2006-05-09

Dividing classes reaises many questions regarding how the middle class views school advantage. Through interviews and personal experiences, the author describes her positive and negative experiences with the educational system. We found this book gives rise to many controversial issues some with which we agree as well as some issues we disagree with. While the author does give concrete examples, we believe SES is not the only predictor for educational success.

4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking book.......2003-11-16

This book is interesting because of the author's choice to focus on the middle class. Despite the fact that you may disagree with this approach (as i did in the beginning) it pushes one to think about the class positionality of the middle class and one's self as well. I would especially read this book if you are in the middle class and have children who will be or are in school now.

By far the most interesting and challenging of all card games, bridge is enjoying renewed popularity following a decline from it's peak several decades ago and is currently under consideration as an Olympic sport. As an activity for children, it provides the opportunity to develop numerous skills and attributes beyond sheer intellectual stimulation. It requires such social skills as communication and cooperation with a partner as well as respect for one's opponents. Likewise it develops personal abilities such as how to think and perform under pressure and demands an honest assessment of one's assets and liabilities. There are hundreds of bridge books on the market written for adults, including easily a dozen for beginners, but only one that is designed for children. Fortunately, it's a good one. This book leads the reader through the game step by step and takes nothing for granted, not even the fact of there being four suits in a deck of 52 cards. However, don't think for a minute that it's simplistic or that teaching is by rote. On the contrary, it presents the material in such a way that the reader actually understands the game rather than just learns the rules. Anybody who learns the material in this book - adult or child - will not only be a better bridge player than the party bridge players he or she encounters, but will be well on the way to becoming a serious duplicate bridge player.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable resource.......2007-10-01

A person can drown in the sheer volume of CSS information available in print and on the web. In my quest to learn the ins and outs of CSS, I found plenty of primers, tutorials, how-to articles and resource sites. I did not find a unifying document that would allow me to assemble all of that information into the knowledge needed to use CSS effectively until I found this book. The author has done a fine job of bringing the underlying tenets of CSS and XHTML together in a way that makes all the other sources make perfect sense. He also writes in a way that shows he is smart and writing to smart people. It may not be perfect, but it is extremely useful, even indispensable. As the 2d edition will be available November 13, this edition is probably best checked from the library. But if you are new to CSS, this book is must-read material.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to follow.......2007-07-09

This book is easy to follow and gets into the nitty gritty of css. You'll be coding in no time, and will understand why you're doing what you're doing. I love it. It's so informative, and has given me the confidence to really run with css.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......2007-06-01

I'm currently taking a CSS class online and often find myself scratching my head witht the 2 books required for the class - this NOT being one of them - I picked this one up on my own and now it's like - "Oh, so that's what those other books meant" - this one is easy to follow and understand - I'm a designer by trade - so any type of code makes my head hurt - this books makes it so much easier!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Start to CSS.......2007-03-30

I have bought and read many HTML books over the years in an attempt to write even a simple web page or two, but with little success. HTML always seemed very clumsy and totally illogical. Layout code seemed to be repeated time and time again and could hardly be seen amongst the content (and vise versa). Then along came CSS - this, I thought, must be the way to do it!

A few more books on CSS later (Amazon are making a fortune out of me) but still no headway. The reason, I decided, was that all the books I had read were written by programmers (no disrespect, I do a bit myself). What I needed was a book written by a designer, someone who can tie together the XHTML and CSS from a designer's viewpoint but in a structured and logical way.

Enter Charles Wyke-Smith and Stylin' with CSS.

If any of the above description fits you, then this book is what you're looking for. The treatment is logical, well paced and above all relevant. It is written by someone who understands page design and shows you how to setup a descent web site using CSS. OK there are more typos in the first print than there should be, but they shouldn't throw you off course.

It is not the definitive design manual - it never pretends to be. It is an excellent book to start you on the right path to understanding CSS and using it correctly. I whole heartedly recommend it.

        Book Description

He served as Hitler's architect, the undisputed master of the German war machine, and the one responsible for conscripted foreign labor in the Third Reich. And, when Albert Speer was captured and sentenced at Nuremberg--after becoming the only defendant to plead guilty--he started keeping this secret diary, much of it on toilet paper. After 20 years of imprisonment, he found 25,000 of the smuggled pages waiting for him, and from those entries he shaped this deeply powerful document. "Albert Speer's book is a deeply moving document. It is also of extraordinary political and psychological interest...a must for anyone interested in psychological motivation of political action and the problem of guilt and repentance. But, beyond this it is so fascinatingly written that I could not put it down before I finished it." --Erich Fromm.

That which was good (Inside the Third Reich) is now even better for "Spandau" is Speer's soul-searching account of and reflection on himself and his life while he was imprisoned for 21 years. The book was written in a day-by-day diary entry form so one almost feels one is there with him sharing his emotions and observations. He made it quite clear from the very outset that writing kept him sane but ".. it must be more than a matter of organizing sheer survival. This must also become a time of reckoning. If at the end, after these twenty years, I do not have an answer to the questions that preoccupy me now, this imprisonment will have been wasted for me. And yet I fully realize that even at best my conclusions can only be tentative..." Upon his release in 1966, he left the mass of papers of his prison diaries lay untouched, unread for over ten years before he finally published them. Apart from the historical importance, readers will enjoy the writing of a fine intellectual mind despite his sad observation that "Diaries are usually the accompaniment of a lived life. This one stands in place of a life."

This is an immensely personal and moving book that no one could afford to miss and deserves much more than a running commentary.

4 out of 5 stars Wonder Boy of the 3rd Reich.......2004-06-09

First hand accounts of the workings of the German High Command and the interactions between the parties, including Adolph Hitler, are rare and becoming rarer. Many of those involve left memoirs, but those are becoming difficult to find, as most are now out of print. Speer's Spandau writings are among the endangered species.

Anyone who wishes to understand the minds of the men who made the Reich work and particularly the mind of Adolph Hitler can do so by the evidence of their deeds at one level. However, the records of their thoughts, conversations, behavior and rationalizations while they did so is certainly a facet of understanding. The writings of Von Manstein, Doenitz, Rommel, Guderian, and the diaries of Joseph Goebbels are each worth the reading in this sense. As is Albert Speer.

Speer was imprisoned longer than any of the other members of Hitler's inner circle. He had many years of solitude to contemplate his deeds and reflect on how and why he came to be imprisoned in Spandau. Maybe these musings qualify as revisionist history. Maybe they're merely self-serving rationalizations. But his anecdotes will definitely add to your understanding of the 3rd Reich. You don't have to believe everything he says, but it's worth reading it and making the choice for yourself.

Speer thought of himself as a 'nice guy'. You can't make an informed decision as to whether it was true without reading what he had to say. In the end most of us believe we are 'nice people' and are justified in whatever horrendous deeds we pursue.

        5 out of 5 stars Fascinating account.......2004-02-26

What a good story. I couldn't put the book down. I recommend that you read a book on the Nuremberg trials (Persico's is a good one) before plunging into Speer's diary. Speer wrote his diary while paying his 20 years sentence at Spandau prison for his responsibility as one of the leaders of the Thirch Reich.

5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding Recollections From Hitler's Architect!.......2002-09-18

No figure emerged from the Second World War with greater controversy and attention than did Nazi architect and Hitler confidant Albert Speer. Sentenced to twenty years in the military prison in Spandau for war crimes, Speer was the only one of the principals tried at Nuremberg to admit his culpability in the horror that was the Third Reich. Many questioned his sincerity, for although he said all the right things, it was extremely self-serving to do so at the moment of final judgment, for his capitulation surely saved his life. Yet Speer served his twenty years and then was released to live out his life amidst even greater controversy, for Speer had compiled an amazing 25,000 page secret diary during his long confinement.

This treasure trove of personal anecdotes, reminiscences, and observations was eventually serialized into two distinctive books. When the first was published in 1969 in Germany, the diary, entitled "Recollections", caused a literal firestorm of controversy based on a range of observations and positions taken by Speer. Yet the book, released a year later in a translated version for the English-speaking world as "Inside The Third Reich" was a runaway best seller based primarily on the detailed and absolutely spellbinding descriptions Speer offered regarding the principals of the Nazi regime. Shortly thereafter, Speer released the present volume, entitled "Spandau; The Secret Diaries". His observations, tidbits, and anecdotes about Hitler himself were endlessly fascinating and occasioned a lot of dinner conversation all over the world. Likewise, his portrayal of the day to day life within the so-called Nazi elite gave reader s a graphic and telling account of what these people were like, and how it was possible that they could do so much of what they did.

It also establishes a consistent pattern of personal denial of any real responsibility for what had happened on Speer's part. He claimed to have been only tangentially involved in what happened to the Jews, and that he never understood that the policy of deportation and relocation to 'work camps' was part of a conspiracy to systematically murder all of Europe's Jews. Yet careful readers find that his role as Chief Administrator Of Armament Production, which employed slave labor by both Jews and other subjugated prisoners of war certainly had a systematic policy of working these slave laborers to death.

In later works he claimed to be less involved in the politics of the Third Reich than in the day to oversight of functional management of its policies. This is a fascinating book, and one cannot help but to come to admire this man and his struggles to maintain his balance and his sanity during the two decades he was held at Spandau. It provides a penetrating look both at his own mental processes as well as sharing his ruminations about various details and aspects of life within the whirlwind of excitement, agony, and horror that the years of Nazi reign in Germany represent. This is a book I can highly recommend. Enjoy!

Albert Speer give a day to day account of what it is like in Spandau. The diaries are divided daily so you soon feel that you are there. You soon feel that his memories are yours and wonder what you would have done. Sure you know now, but wait until you read this book. There are 32 pages of exclusive photos. It is weird win you think what you or a relative was doing on the same days. Albert got out just one month before I went in to the military. Even his epilog is impressive.

                        Part One Of Two Parts

On the first day of October 1966, Albert Speer, onetime Reich Minister for Armaments and War Production and personal architect and confidant to Hitler, walked out of Spandau Prison, free for the first time since the end of WW II. Waiting for him were the more than 25,000 pages of notes and diaries he had secretly written and smuggled out of Spandau during the course of his 20-year sentence. As Speer himself said, "This [diary] stands in place of a life."

This has all the plusses of recorded versions. You get to here how names and words are pronounced. Letting the tape do the pacing you can finish the book in a reasonable time. The tapes are portable allowing you to listen on the go. And it is still nice to back-up and re listen to particular sections. The down side is no pictures and spelling. So I suggest that you also buy the book.

Albert Speer gives a day to day account of what it is like in Spandau. The diaries are divided daily so you soon feel that you are there. You soon feel that his memories are yours and wonder what you would have done. Sure you know now, but wait until you read this book. There are 32 pages of exclusive photos in the book version. It is weird win you think what you or a relative was doing on the same days. Albert got out just one month before I went in to the military. Even his epilog is impressive.

                          Book Description

A social history within a political and cultural framework, The West in the World looks at the development of western civilization within the context of the rest of the world. Rather than treating the evolution of western civilization as an isolated event, Sherman and Salisbury examine how the west evolved in time with--and often, as a response to--the events that shaped civilizations around the globe. In addition to setting the history of western civilization in context, this groundbreaking new text distinguishes itself from standard survey texts by being the first to fully integrate visual history with traditional narrative style. Readers glimpse the true craft of the historian through integrated discussions of the visual program in the book; throughout the text, the authors address how the paintings, sculpture, and other art of the times serve as primary sources in informing the reader about that period in history. In addition to drawing the art program into the text, The West in the World includes visual learning tools such as Thinking about Geography maps with guiding questions, and timelines at the beginning and end of each chapter. The West in the World also offers complete coverage of western civilization in a midsize book--this unique length provides more detailed and comprehensive coverage than brief books, but is not as exhaustive and unmanageable as larger survey texts.

The New How Things Work updates the original with informative coverage of the objects and ideas that are changing our everyday lives, from DVDs and MP3 music files to plasma screen televisions and wireless internet technology. While most of us are curious about the inner workings of gadgets and machines, we often feel intimidated in our efforts to really understand them. The New How Things Work, a fascinating and clearly written and illustrated volume, uses anecdotal information to help readers understand the mechanisms and principals behind technological wonders, painlessly folding in the basic scientific principles that make each of them work. With chapters including Home, Buildings and Building, Power and Energy, Transportation, Entertainment, Manufacturing, and Tools of Medicine, the book covers every important technological category, focusing on familiar items such as clocks and locks, planes and trains, elevators and escalators, and the not-so-familiar-"smart" clothes and buildings, laser surgery, and DNA manipulation.Like David Macaulay's classic The Way Things Work and Bill Bryson's recent bestseller, A Short History of Nearly Everything, this eminently browsable book presents ideas and concepts in clear, concise language. The text, which is organized into stand-alone spreads, is lavishly illustrated with more than 400 photographs, technical drawings, diagrams, and sidebar concepts that visually reinforce the science explained in the text.National Geographic's The New How Things Work is a comprehensive reference that will satisfy the curious and educate the perplexed. If you are curious about everyday gadgets, machines, tools, even industrial and medical processes, you'll find the answers you've always wanted in The New How Things Work.

I would recommend this book to people because I really thought this book was a page-turner. It was a page-turner because I would always want to know how the next things work and function. Another reason why I recommend this book to people that really like to learn about how combustion engines work or how a cell phone works, and everything in between.

This is a DK book, and they have never disappointed me. The quality is the best, beautiful detailed photograps and the descriptions are easy to understand. It's expensive, but I found it worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for mechanical or science loving teens!.......2006-10-22

I gave this book to a 11 year old boy for Christmas. He loves it! It is his favorite 'pick up once a week to learn something new book'. It is actually very clear and concise. For instance, me, the unmenchanical mind can understand it, yet it has enough depth that bright science crazed boys and the odd girl will love it.

                            1 out of 5 stars I Was Not Pleased!.......2006-02-01

Just another glossy coffe-table book. About 30 years ago there was a great informative book with same title, "How Things Work". That book gave detailed information, was one of our favorite books. It seems alll good thing are now 'dumbed down!

5 out of 5 stars How Things Work by John Langone.......2005-04-18

How Things Work is a vast compilation of explanations on everyday appliances that are dealt with in all areas of life. The book is divided into eleven chapters with categories ranging from household appliances, to mining and manufacturing, and health and medicine. Each chapter is two pages long with a descriptive page and a picture page which puts an image with the words. The description begins with a brief history of the machine followed by a description of the principles governing the machine.
This book is both interesting and informative and would capture the curiosity of a wide group of people. One of the great parts of the book is that the machines range from simple designs, such as a non-electric lawn mower, to highly complex designs, such as space telescopes; and there is no prior knowledge required before reading any of the descriptions. When you think about the thousands of gadgets, both small and large, that makes our lives possible; it is easy to pass them by without thinking about them. This book describes these items in a fashion that keeps the readers interest and makes them want to read on. I would recommend this book to anyone with the slightest interest in the mechanical world around them.

                            Book Description

Protocols for an All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory of Fungi in a Costa Rican Conservation Area by A.Y. Rossman, R.E. Tulloss, T.E. O'Dell and R.G. Thorn is the result of a workshop that took place at the Area de Conservacion Guanacaste (ACG) in northwestern Costa Rica. At the workshop, a group of 25 mycologists from around the world met to design a project to sample all of the fungi in the ACG. The book is a how-to-manual for isolating and sampling fungi. The methods described in this book range from a double transect design for sampling mushrooms and large fungi over an extended period to procedures for isolating fungi from leaf litter and dung. It is a "cookbook" of recommended procedures that would result in locating fungi from most substrates. Many of the techniques described here, although aimed at sampling/isolating fungi in a tropical region, are applicable anywhere. Numerous references are included for isolating and characterizing the resulting fungi.

5 out of 5 stars A very specialized and useful procedure book.......2001-09-25

It is a very specialized book that covers in great detail inventory making procedures for biodiversity which includes all fungi taxonomical groups existing in a protected area of Costa Rica.

Even though the method selection foundations are not present, the names of the people who helped in the elaboration of methodology design are (all of them are specialists in different areas of fungi study), as well as their addresses, making it possible for the reader to contact them if he or she needs to know more about their work.

The book shows the inventory procedure job under a very interesting point of view. Not only does it limit to field technical aspects, but also considers management aspects, such as execution problems and function manuals of the researchers. It also includes a budget design and an integrated view of the whole study.

This book is doubtlessly very useful and maybe unique because there are very few publications related to fungi monitoring methods in tropical zones until now.
