What was most remarkable about Jim Ling among the great players of corporate games is that he invented his own. And it worked for a while. In fact, he convinced some of the smartest people on Wall Street that he had a foolproof way. It has been more that 25 years since Ling strode the scene as creator and CEO of Ling-Temco-Vought, once the 14th largest corporation on Fortune's 500 list. When the financial magic he used wore off, he was ousted from the helm. They even changed the name to plain LTV to get his name off the facade that wound up as a bankrupt steelmaker.

Without any education beyond high school in Oklahoma and electrician's training in the Navy during World War II, Ling discovered a way to create free money for a while. He called his series of acquisitions and spin-offs Project Redeployment, which made it sound like something grander than it proved to be. But while it worked, it was dazzling, even compared with Michael Milken's rediscovery of undervalued, high-yield (junk) bonds. Unlike Milken, a convicted felon, Ling was a man of integrity whose worst trouble with the law involved a minor regulatory matter. He believed in himself and his venture so thoroughly -- and wrongheadedly -- that he kept all his own and his children's money in his company's stock and was wiped out.

The trouble with financial games is that they are easier to play than focusing on sound management and products, and they are surely more fun to watch.

A well written anecdotal story book on LTV and corporate culture in general. Written in 1972 after LTV had collapsed. Has withstood the test of time. Anybody who works in a corporation today can see the similarities with then and now.

This is exactly what it says. It's the classic battletech core book. Other than the starter box set, which you may need to play, the core book is what you really need. This is the main rule book with optional combat rules and construction rules. It also has rules for vehicles, naval, infantry, battle armor, and the new protomechs. This book is a step into the open door of the Battletech universe. Have fun gaming.

The Current Must-Get Battletech Book.......2004-01-14

Unless you're an extremely casual Battletech player (as in maybe play once a year and with interest in playing outside family), skip the Classic Battletech Boxed Set and go straight here, do not pass Go. The Classic 'Tech box contains the very minimum to play, but to really get rolling as well as use any of the 'Mechs in the Technical Readouts, this is the book to go with. Includes all the rules to play any game up to tournament level, including miniature scale play, create your own 'Mechs or use 'Mechs from the Record Sheets or Technical Readouts. Literally a must-have for playing Battletech.

As good as it gets........2004-12-07

Let's get right down to it. This book is sensibly organized and many rules have been clarified (as a matter of fact the most significant changes are noted near the back for ease of reference). Some new level 2 equipment has been added (Inner Sphere) as well as several suits of battle armor. The extensive salvage and repair rules from Maximum Tech are also present.

As for missing the Protomech rules from TRO 3060: this is actually a good thing. Protomechs are a foolish idea that unbalance the game, while TRO 3060 is a piece of garbage.

One final note... this write-up is for the unrevised rulebook. The revised rulebook is another piece of trash.

MECH WARRIOR IS BASED OFF THIS GAME
NOW THE REVIEW:
Nowadays there are two paths for minature gaming.
1: Warhammer, which is overpriced and has confusing rules.
2: Wizkids. Even worse. Untillegent play, "collectibily", and worse yet they made a "Improvemnt" to battltech that took mage knight, added a rule or two, made battle-y units and sold the [stuff] to your local store.

But this gem of a rulebook is Battletech. Intelegent and strategic play. Unit cuztimization, or you can even create your own. (Unit as in a peice on the board, not a group of peices). Lots of cool weapons that make sense and are very balanced. ...
Battletech is a lot of fun to PLAY. Its worth every last penny.

Helpful but still confusing.......2002-01-04

This book is helpful for clarification. If you want a campaign, this is one of the books needed. If you are a newbie, play level ONE a bit more, I still am rereading it for certain things. The omission of AEROSPACE support is a bit confusing, is it legally there, or not?

I think this is an excellent Battletech source book. The layout is well done and easy to follow. Rules are easily understood and implemented. "Battletech Master Rules" is excellent all around and is definitely a must have for any fan of the game.

Not for a Role Play Newbie........2001-05-22

Yes, I hate to give anything with the words Battletech and Fasa on it one star. but I read through this manual and while I found the games it laid out to be played in the Battletech boardgame some of the stuff even I could not figure out. I have played "Hero Quest" some of you may remember the old board/Role-Play game. But, Battletech totally throws me on this concept. I just could not get this. If you are a veteran to RPG and advanced board games, buy this it can spice up your game. If your a newbie, look for a veteran to help you out to this stuff.

I've been a "micro-ISV" for 30 years (if you can count pre-Internet years) and I still found a lot of very valuable information and insight in this book. I tend to not read software-related books cover to cover, usually just referring to the parts of interest. I read this entire book and added a large number of tasks to my "to-do" list. I wish I had this years ago!

Good scope, lots of helpful references.......2007-03-27

I read this book after about ten years of running my own ISV, and while there weren't any huge surprises, it still had a number of helpful items in it.

I like the fact that Bob goes into a number of useful tools (both software and otherwise), and that the book has lots of screenshots and graphics. The sidebars include lots of interviews, and while many of the people interviewed are obviously pushing their own products, it's always nice to be able to read many different perspectives in a single book.

It's a good overview of running a small software company - I recommend it.

If you want to write a shareware this is a book you should read........2007-03-26

If you want to write a shareware through a micro-isv (micro independent software vendor) this is a book you should read. I like it covers all the aspects neccessary to be a micro-isv. It includes information applicable to the U.S. and U.K., but no other countries.

It mentions software to help you throughout the phases of development of your software, but sometimes it is windows or visual studio oriented. Java programmers need to search for equivalent software elsewhere. In such cases the good part is that with the help of the book you know what to look for.

It has four stars because it is really good, but the information can become obsolete quite quickly (legal changes, new software appears, etc).

It's okay.......2006-02-28

This is the 5th book of it's type I've read in a row. You know the genre, Americans buy a home in ruins and fix it up. I'm a sucker for this kind of book. But the things I've learned from these books are: 1. You have to have bottomless pockets. 2. French government regulations are enough to drive me insane. 3. If I ever do buy a house in France, I will find one that someone else has already roofed, tiled, windowed, painted, landscaped etc etc etc! What a nightmare.
If you like this sort of book, this one is great because it's located in a different, less written about area of France. And it's every bit as good as Ann Barry's. I always thought Ann was a ninny sort of wimp that depended on the kindness of her neighbors way too much. At least Jeff Greene and his wife were more self reliant.

Then what?.......2005-05-13

I just finished French Spirits and then read other reviews. It never occurred to me that the author was being a braggard. The story is full of real characters and the author's acceptance and appreciation of their quirks is obvious. My only complaint is that this swift read ends abruptly. There are implications that his mother does not continue to live with them in France, but we never learn what happens to her. Surely there is a sequel, but perhaps more life has to be lived before he will be ready to write it. I will certainly be waiting.

I've been had!.......2003-05-31

Beware the spate of books on the topic of Americans/Brits living in France! Talk about publishers milking a trend! Unfortunately, not every author is a Peter Mayle or an Ann Barry. Greene's book, for example, is hopeless--- a shambles as far as organization goes, peopled by clueless, insensitive, and incompletely delineated characters (maybe that last is the good news, because the bad news is that this is a work of non-fiction.) It is about as illuminating of the French culture and countryside as a Greyhound bus tour of the Top Ten tourist sites of the Ile-de-France.
Don't be taken in by the book's title, as I was. Even we bibliophilic Francophiles have some standards!

A memoir in France.......2003-04-02

I just finished reading this book. I have never wriiten a review , but I do feel compelled to after reading some of the other reviews posted here. For me, this is a memoir, not a travel guide. I admire anyone who is willing to share his life experiences with me--I find it a most generous act. I feel like writing to the author to thank him for his book. He brought the area and the people to life for me. I am studying French; so the sentences in French (don't be alarmed, he supplies a translation just following) were fun for me to figure out. I liked learning about Henri IV's locks, and learning about the author's childhood. I love a good memoir--and particularly, one by someone who is not famous except in his own circle. I would encourage anyone who feels the same to buy, or borrow this book--and order "Eyewitness France" if you want a travel guide. This book is a lovely eyewitness to a man's life.

I loved this book. It is not egotistical at all; it writes of an area less explored than Provence or Tuscany; and the author has a knack of bringing his characters alive; the house itself is so well described one feels one has walked through it. There was not a chapter I found dull, and I devoured it in a sitting. Greene doesn't laugh at the locals, or sneer at the imagined "quaintness" of Europe. You can't do better than this for travel narrative.

Excellent resource, study it like you would a bible........2006-01-11

This is a huge brick of a book. As other reviewers have pointed out, it is comprised of three volumes on pretty much all undergraduate math, bound into one. Other reviewers have correctly pointed out that the material is exhaustive, and although one or two chapters are a bit dated, reading this work and studying it carefully is a very rewarding endeavour. I am a social scientist, and studying this book in depth has made me conversational in pretty much all the math an engineer would be expected to know at the end of his undergraduate studies. This is to stress that although this book is accessible to the motivated amateur, the knowledge you can gain from it with dilligent study carries quite a bit of weight.

Although I think the content of a book is more important than its physical composition, I would like to point a few things out because they have not been mentioned by other reviewers and may be useful if you are considering buying this edition, or the separate three volumes.
Like I said, it's quite a tome, and not something you can easily carry around in a backpack on a day to day basis. In this sense, or if you are only interested in particular topics, you are better off buying one or all of the separate three volumes.
However, note that this edition has an index which covers ALL three volumes, which makes looking things up and using this book as a reference text very useful.

I know keep this book handy, precisely to use as a reference texte. The index makes it easy to find what I am looking for, and the treatment of the topic always strikes a nice balance between being accessible and yet in enough depth to have practical value.

Dover has released all three volumes of the original in an affordable single volume paperback.

Although the book is necessarily uninformed by developments since the 1960s, it is a solid and challenging introduction to mathematics useful to the motivated high-school student.

It is consciously informed by a Marxist philosophy of mathematics which may be unfamiliar to some readers. The authors believe that mathematics is less about an ideal world of forms and more emergent from daily work. For this reason they reference their examples to practical examples of the sort popular in the Soviet Union in the 1960s taken from heavy industry.

The section on computer technology, of course is useful primarily to the antiquarian.

Because the authors are not excessively formal in the Western mode the student has to do extra work to derive results they illustrate with physical metaphors in some cases.

There's also a certain motivation here to sing the praises of Russian mathematicians which is fortunately subordinated to the truth. As such, the book is a document from a period when Russia's greatness was based on its prowess in science and mathematics, prowess based on a universal availability of public education. This resource has been sold to Western investors for pennies on the dollar with no plan to reproduce it for the next generation, which is rather sad.

A great text to have in your collection!.......2005-03-24

This book gives a nice overview of the various fields of mathematics (no pun intended ;-)). Famous Russian authors have pooled their talents to come up with a book that summarizes the majority of the mathematics available the time. It's basically a dictionary for mathematicians! Covers topics from number theory, calculus, analysis, topology and even higher up subjects such as functional analysis and differential geometry. There are interesting theorems, and examples throughout.

I whole-heartedly agree with the other positive reviews offered here. There are only a few things I would like to add:

(1) Popular math and science has become quite popular lately. I'm sure that there are many pop-math/pop-sci readers who would like a more 'meatier' treatment of math that still has an accessible style. If you're in that group, then this book is for you.

It basically requires recollection of high school algebra and a willingness to wade through and learn some challenging material. I should add that the book looks intimidating in size but this is mostly due to the fact that Dover has bound 3 volumes as 1 (which is actually a great deal for readers).

(2) I can't think of too may books that can, with effort, take a novice through the bulk of a college/university level math curriculum.

(3) This book contains material by 2 of the greatest mathematicians/scientists of all time: Andrei Kolmogorov (famous for his work on probability and information theory as well as Kolmogorov Complexity/Algorithmic Information Theory) and I. M. Gelfand (for his work on mathematical physics). The book is worth buying for that reason alone.
