Customer Reviews:
Not entirely engaging, but informative.......2001-12-09
This book describes the life of a merchant (Abu Taqiyya) and some details about his family. You see how he traded, where he traveled, how he negotiated, etc. Also, you see how his family was affected by Abu's merchant lifestyle. It's informative cultural history. But, it's a little slow.
The details sometimes get a little too detailed. It's not a sweeping novel, by any means. This was written by a scholar, so expect to see more detail and analyzation than you would in say, a historical fiction novel.
The book does its job -- teaching you about merchant culture in 17th century middle east. It's just not a "fun" book compared to most.

I am 14 years old and am hoping to become a Disney Animator. This book comes from a very reliable source, Don Hahn (producer of many Disney Films). This book gave me very useful information about what to do to prepare myself to become an animator, and also very interesting facts about what goes into making a genuine Disney Animated Feature Film. I would recommend this book to any Disney fan or future animator
Book Description
Middle-class family life in the 1950s brings to mind images of either smugly satisfied or miserably repressed nuclear families with breadwinning husbands, children, and housewives, much like the families depicted in Ozzie and Harriet and Father Knows Best.
Jessica Weiss delves beneath these mythic images and paints a far more complex picture that reveals strong continuities between the baby boomers and their parents. Drawing on interviews with American couples from the 1950s to the 1980s, Weiss creates a dynamic portrait of family and social change in the postwar era. She pairs these firsthand accounts with a deft analysis of movies, television shows, magazines, and advice books from each decade, providing an unprecedented and intimate look at ordinary marriages in a time of sweeping cultural change.
Weiss shows how young couples in the 1950s attempted to combine egalitarian hopes with traditional gender roles. Middle-class women encouraged their husbands to become involved fathers. Midlife wives and mothers reshaped the labor force and the home by returning to work in the 1960s. And couples strove for fulfilling marriages as they dealt with the pressures of childrearing in the midst of the sexual and divorce revolutions of the 1960s and 1970s. By the 1980s, they were far more welcoming to the ideas of the women's movement than has often been assumed. More than simply changing with the times, the parents of the baby boom contributed to changing times themselves.
Weiss's excellent use of family interviews that span three decades, her imaginative examination of popular culture, and her incisive conclusions make her book an invaluable contribution not only to our understanding of the past but also to our understanding of men's and women's roles in today's family.
"Weiss has written an enlightening book that examines the dynamics of American families past and present. . . . Since Weiss is a historian, she provides analyses of her arguments that are factual rather than emotive, and her use of family interviews further contributes to a strong presentation. Overall, this is a unique works because its multidisciplinary approach informs but never preaches on the emotionally charged topic of the American family.—Sheila Devaney, Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating social inquiry.......2000-10-25
Most people believe the feminist revolution of the 1970s was the force that helped women re-draw the boundaries of family relationships, but this incisive exploration of the of baby-boomers' parents reveals the seeds of change were sown in the 1950s. History professor Jessica Weiss' book is a work of rigorous academic research, yet her lively and conversational style makes it enjoyable reading for anyone. Weiss explodes the myths of 1950s conformity showing how the dramatic social changes of the latter 20th century began with the more subtle shifts of the '50s. And she doesn't simply spin theories -- she updates a study that traced families starting the in 1950s, so we can hear the words of women facing the challenge of evolving roles.
To Have and To Hold starts with an exploration of how youthful marriage and early childbearing led to a redefinition of marital roles and goes on to consider how working women influenced the family's balance of power. Later chapters examine fatherhood, the quest for family togetherness, and the impact of divorce. And there's a fascinating evaluation of myths propagated by magazines with a sharp-eyed juxtaposition to what was really going on. Weiss even takes on Freidan's classic "Feminine Mystique" showing where it was on target and where it oversimplified issues. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a fuller understanding of how the great social quakes of our time have affected our families.

A few of these patterns I've seen in other leisure house books, but mostly new and original patterns - I love the fact that they have pictures of every afghan right next to the patterns - and though I haven't tried making any yet, the patterns themselves seem quite consise, without much confusion.

Customer Reviews:
Uninspired.......2005-07-20
I was looking for afghans that were a little different. The designs in this book were uninspiring - I have much better books. None the less I will probably make at least one afghan out of it.
A bit disappointed.......2003-11-29
This book is beautifully photographed and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. However, I would have preferred a more contemporaty selection of designs. Most of the patterns have a dated, 60's, 70's look to them.
I love this book.......2003-08-14
I love this book. It has so many lovely afghans to make. It is presented in a great color photo fashion. There's not much more I can add to the other people's reviews. It a great book!
One wonderful afghan book!.......1999-07-07
This truly is a wonderful book. It has afghans of varied difficulty; great detailed technique illustrations and some beautiful and ingenious designs. I guarantee that you will find several afghans that you will want to make for those special people in your life.

Customer Reviews:
Microsoft Project 2003 seems to be an afterthought.......2007-01-09
This book does a very good job of explaining the essentials of project management, as well as basic project management theory. The problem for me lies with the "with Microsoft Project 2003" part of the book - the lack of practice or at least example files. Screen shots illustrating various Project 2003 screens were just not enough for me - I needed to see (and the book should have referred to) actual sample Microsoft Project projects. In addition, it could have been a bit more comprehensive - I found that a lot of basic Project 2003 how to information was missing. Project 2003 is a very feature rich application and this book just scratches the surface. I think the Microsoft Press Step-by-Step volume is a much better introduction to using this application for project management (although not as strong on the theory).
Does what it says on the tin.......2006-11-02
Good read that gave me lots of handy hints and tips, both in project management itself and in using Project 2003. A definite buy.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Project Management with Microsoft Project 2003.......2006-06-30
I feel this book is easy to understand and implementable. I use the book daily to help me improve my event planning and managment.
The Complete Idoits Guide to Project Management w/ Microsoft Project 2003.......2005-10-15
Ron has delivered a powerful book for anyone that uses Microsoft Project 2003 because he explains complicated concepts in an easy to understand format. But this book is more than a software guide, it provides an enlightening approach to project management that makes this book worth reading for anyone in project management regardless of whether they use Microsoft Project or not.
Unfortunately, too many books and articles on project management offer poor advice. These are written by technicians who don't understand the real world - they focus on process instead of results. Project Management is simply the art of getting things done. Ron knows how to get results and reveals the secrets to getting the desired results. I've presented hundreds of seminars on project management, yet the advice Ron conveys in his easy to read style still opens my eyes to new ideas. This is a book everyone in project management must read. I know my copy will be worn out.
Covers all the basics for handling Microsoft Project .......2005-05-10
Covers all the basics for handling Microsoft Project 2003, 2000 and 2002, providing updated terms, tips for approaching workgroup projects and communication requirements, and project presentation. Chapters show how to both operate the application itself and get the most from project goals.

Book Description
This beautifully written book, illustrated by four-time Caldecott Honor recipient Jerry Pinkney, makes the story of Harriet Tubman's childhood accessible to very young readers. As a young slave, nicknamed "Minty," Harriet Tubman was a feisty and stubborn girl with a dream of escape, and whose rebellious spirit often got her into trouble. Pinkney's expressive illustrations bring every emotion to brilliant life-from troubled sorrow to spirited hope for freedom.
"Rich with melodrama, suspense, pathos, and a powerful vision of freedom. This exquisitely crafted book resonates well beyond its few pages." -Kirkus Reviews, pointer review

Good Classroom Book.......2006-03-11
I used this book as part of a Black History Month. The class loved it.
A powerful book.......2002-12-31
Eight-year-old "Minty," a fictionalized version of a young Harriet Tubman, suffers greatly while working as a slave on a Maryland plantation. Her rebellious nature adds an extra degree of conflict, and she has several traumatic experiences. With the guidance of her father, she starts planning to escape.
Scenes of Minty with her family are very tenderly rendered in this 1997 Coretta Scott King Award winner. Illustrator Jerry Pinkney effectively combines pencils and watercolors to add an appropriately subdued, somewhat dreary cast even to bright, sunny scenes. The strong text describes the horrors of scenes too disturbing to show in the illustrations.
The story really tugged at my heartstrings. It is a very moving story, well told, but still very sad.
Minty the girl.......2002-01-17
Minty was treated awful wiped to her bones. Most of us don't know how badly Minty was treated and this story will help you under stand Black history please read this book and you will know how i feel.
Young Harriet Tubman.......2000-07-03
A fictionalized story mixed with facts about the young Harriet Tubman. It chronicles her life from the Maryland plantation from which she escaped, and provides details of what life was like as a slave on a plantation. Wonderful book that is dramatic and full of interesting details about a famous American. Harriet Tubman was a hero of her time and this book does an excellent job of telling her story. Schroeder's mixture of fact and fiction make this book a joy to read.
The life of young Harriet Tubman........1999-07-13
As a teacher, I found this book to be helpful in introducing my students to one of America's famous female heroines. This is an appropriate book for third to sixth grade students. Fifth and sixth graders should have an easy time reading this book; however, third and fourth graders will probably enjoy it more if it is read to them. Pinkney's illustrations are wonderful. If you enjoyed his use of pencil, colored pencils, and watercolors in other books (e.g. The Patchwork Quilt) then you'll cetainly enjoy the work he's done in this book. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to remind children that it's important to dream, hope, and have faith.

Overrated and full of hyperbole.......2007-07-31
The authors have written a book with a clear-cut agenda--to force American students to recognize and overcome their evil "Eurocentric" biases. (The word "Eurocentric" too often today is code for racist.) While I do agree that there are other histories, other perspectives, trashing Europe, Europeans, and by extension Americans, to build up an argument for knowing about the Chinese, Aztecs, and Africans fails to impress. This book is the textual equivalent of shouting the loudest to gain the greatest attention, and that very hyperbole makes for a very bad book, both from reading and teaching perspectives. Furthermore, Pomeranz, who studies China, seems to be under the impression he's the only one who knows anything about China and the rest of us are totally ignorant on the subject. Anybody who has read ANY Jonathan Spence or Patricia Ebrey or John King Fairbank knows better--in every sense of that world. For India, read PJ Marshall, Barbara Stoller, or Richard Barnett; Africa, John Thorton and Linda Heywood, Philip Curtain, or David Northrup. Frankly, THE WORLD THAT TRADE CREATED is a polemic, not a history. One would more profitably spend time with Curtain's THE WEST AND THE WORLD.
The world that Pommeranz and Topik invent.......2007-05-07
Fun reading for those that enjoy economic history. The problem is that it is impossible to know what is real.
For example, when talking about the euro, they say that by 2003 "pesos, francs, and marks had become things of the past." That is, Messrs. Pommeranz and Topik confuse pesos (used in several Latin American countries) with pesetas (the vanished Spanish currency). A superficial mistake, no doubt, but one that any well-informed student would avoid making. One can only wonder about the world the authors invent, or get superficially or deeply wrong, when they travel further into the past.
fast and loose with the facts.......2007-04-02
Written by college professors, "The World that Trade Created" tries to sound like a textbook, but is in reality a fictionalized novel that uses history as its vehicle.
Warning sign: there are no footnotes. The book contains thousands of quotes and factoids, but the authors give no indication where they came from. This intellectually dishonest technique keeps the reader from determining for themselves whether the "facts" presented are reliable, unreliable, or made up.
Yes, sometimes stuff is simply made up. Example: "Remote Andorra is now in the center of the world." (p.214) This is just nonsense masquerading as fact. I could find no similar description of Andorra anywhere else. Every other account I found calls Andorra "remote", the opposite of central. Andorra is not alone in offering tax advantages or relying on tourism, so it cannot be central metaphorically. Here and elsewhere, the authors simply make a fanciful statement as if it were fact.
"The World That Trade Created" is at best a loosely organized, fictionalized version of trade history. If you want a revisionist view of history told in People Magazine format, this is the book for you.
only a stiff could possibly find this book remotely interesting.......2006-02-21
After reading this book and writing this review, I considered reporting it to the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commision, because this book is dangerously boring! I found no new information relevent to anything important. In addition, I believed that certain parts were extremely repetitive, and the topics were dull. The AP teachers may find this book interesting, however, they obviously do not care how their students will react to reading such a dry group of essays. I would highly not recommend this book to anyone, and if you do have to read it for AP World History, good luck.
Anxious.......2006-02-19
Reading this book just makes me exremely anxious... I don't know why.. Maybe its because it just talks about a bunch of stuff that I'm already aware of.. i would rather opt for an interesting story that shows this rather than a bunch of essays. However, if you're into trade and want to sharpen up your knowledge on it, this book is for you.

Fantastic reference book .......2007-05-30
Works great as a reference book for aircraft and spacecraft design classes.
Useful and Helpful Textbook.......2007-04-09
This is a well written book that aeronautical engineers and particularly those engaged in a serious study of aircraft structures design and analysis will find useful, helpful and handy. The author reinforced his message with numerous examples which should help the reader to grasp the fundamental aircraft design ideas and principles. Although the book has been around for some time (I first used it at university as a recommended text in aircraft design over 25 years ago), the theory and concepts are still very much relevant and applicable today.
For the beginner and expert alike, this book serves as a comprehensive reference on aircraft structural design concepts. I recommend that you buy it, read it and keep it on the shelf where you can easily access it and refer to it for critical insights into aircraft structural design.
Elmer Bruhn Rocks!.......2006-05-06
Analysis and Design of Flight Vehicle Structures by Elmer Franklin Bruhn may as well have been written in Latin when I purchased my first copy more than twenty years ago.
While many of the methods in the book have been overshadowed by Finite Element Analysis, they provide valuable insight into the fundamentals of aircraft design and an appreciation for the men and women that designed aircraft before John Vincent Atanasoff and Clifford Berry invented the electronic digital computer at Iowa State University.
Today you won't find many aircraft stress analysts using the Moment Distribution (Hardy Cross) Method, Slope Deflection Method, Method of Elastic Weights or the Methods of Dummy Unit-Loads, Area Moments, Virtual Work, Influence Coefficients ... but working on an example in this book is good, clean fun and frustration ... for the "geek" in all of us.
Some of the standard cliches apply to Analysis and Design of Flight Vehicle Structures. It is the analyst's "best friend" ... "a classic" ... "finer than frog hair split four ways" ... "the stress analyst's Bible" ... that "kicks [...] and takes names" ... and has "withstood the test of time".
If you like puzzles, you will love this book. It contains more aircraft stress analysis examples than you can solve in one lifetime. Many examples remind me of a combination of crossword puzzle, Jumble and Sodoku .... only more difficult ... and less fun. Examples range in difficulty from elementary ... to more painful than a root canal without Lidocaine done by your mother-in-law before electricity.
The problems are condensed. The book could easily be expanded to a five volume set. I would organize it differently ... but as Marge and Homer Simpson might say, "It's easy to criticize ... and FUN TOO!"
While there are many minor errors or "typos" in the book ... a few worth mentioning are:
Page B1.8 Ramberg Osgood Stress-Strain Curve - Add "3/7" before the parentheses to equation (3).
Page C1.9 Octahedral Shear Stress Theory - Top equation in right column ... portion in last parentheses should square each term within and not without.
Page C11.17 Average and Maximum Stress in Upright or Web Stiffener - Column 1, Section C11.20, fs ... .05 ( 1 - k ) should be 0.50 ( 1 - k ) and the area of the upright should be the effective area of the upright. See NACA TN 2661, page 19, equation (30a).
William F. McCombs of Dallas, Texas has written excellent supplements for Analysis and Design of Flight Vehicle Structures. Titles include ... "A Supplement to Analysis and Design of Flight Vehicle Structures" and "Engineering Column Analysis - The Analysis of Compression Members".
Dr. Bruhn has taught me more from beyond the grave than I learned cramming five years of college into nine. Many thanks to his family and publisher for keeping this book in print. Also many thanks to Dr. Charles (Ben) Basye, Bill McCombs, Glen Crawford, Keith Francois, Rex Sanger, Bill Merrick and all of the fine folks in Maquoketa, Iowa.
My advice to younger earthlings ... manage a hedge fund, be a stockbroker, or go to medical school. If you insist on punishing yourself and throwing your life away by pursuing a career in aeronautical or aerospace engineering ... if you just can't get enough "chick repellent" ... buy this book.
A lot of subjects are still Greek to me, but in the last thirty years I have learned this much pseudo-Latin ... Illegitimi Non Carborundum.
Mange Takk!
A classic book.......2004-02-21
I think every aircraft structures designer should get this book. I have gone through many other books but its unique and the best.
An Aerospace Standard.......2000-05-12
In my 16 years in the Aerospace Industry I have rarely come across a more quoted or well known text with the possible exception of Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain. Bruhn is the basis for most Aerospace company strength manuals. It is truly the Bible of flight vehicle analysis.
However, there is no index, only a cursory table of contents. A very good reference for a great deal of practical formulas but abrupt on theoretical explanation in most cases. Many example problems but again very abrupt on explanation. Could have better illustrations.
For all of the above reasons Bruhn gets high marks as a reference but as a text for learning it is lacking; even for someone with a background and education in basic stress analysis. It is still one of the most comprehensive and practical aircraft structural text around and still a must read for any flight vehicle structural engineer.

Book Description
While tropical forests are being cleared at an alarming rate, the clearing is rarely complete and is often not permanent. A considerable amount of tropical forest exists as remnants that have significant value both for the conservation of biological diversity and for meeting the needs of local people.
This volume brings together world-renowned scientists and conservationists to address the biological and socio-economic value of forest remnants and to examine practical efforts to conserve those remnants. An outgrowth of a year-long study by the policy program at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, Forest Patches in Tropical Landscapes provides a broad overview of theory and practice, and will help foster both interdisciplinary research and more effective approaches to tropical conservation and development.

Forest fragments in a context.......2000-06-04
This is an excellent collection of distinct approaches to the forest fragmentation process in tropical landscapes. These approaches include social economical and environmental aspects well based on case studies and scientific data. With one publication it's possible to analyze several points of view and draw an image of the tropical forest's situation.
