Customer Reviews:
A Brilliant, Influential Man .......2006-09-24
A biography of Bernard Baruch written in 1957 (before his 1965 death), this book reveals amazing facets of American history from just after the Civil War (it's hard to deal with the author's attitude toward the early KKK) in Camden, South Carolina, to the NYC financial world at the turn of the century where Baruch made his millions, through all the organization of US resources for WWI, which he managed, the Peace Treaty talks for which he was an economic advisor, and the painful aftermath of its rejection, along with the League of Nations, by the U.S., dooming us all to WWII, when Baruch was also an influential figure. The author is too non-critical and assumes the kind of detailed knowledge of the then-recent past that any educated adult would have had in the 50's, but which is long-gone now. Still, a fascinating study of economics, anti-semitism, and the condition of the South.

Book Description
"Dishonesty inspires more euphemisms than copulation or defecation. This helps desensitize us to its implications. In the post-truth era we don't just have truth and lies but a third category of ambiguous statements that are not exactly the truth but fall just short of a lie. Enhanced truth it might be called. Neo-truth. Soft truth. Faux truth. Truth lite." Deception has become the modern way of life. Where once the boundary line between truth and lies was clear and distinct, it is no longer so. In the post-truth era, deceiving others has become a challenge, a game, a habit. High-profile dissemblers compete for news coverage, from journalists like Jayson Blair and professors like Joseph Ellis to politicians (of all stripes), executives, and "creative" accountants. Research suggests that the average American tells multiple lies on a daily basis, often for no good reason. Not a finger-wagging scolding, The Post-Truth Era is a combination of Ralph Keyes's investigative journalism and solid science. The result is a spirited exploration of why we lie about practically everything and the consequences such casual dishonesty has on society.American society has become permeated from top to bottom by deception. Its consequences for the nature of public discourse, media, business, literature, academia, and politics are profound. With dry humor, passionate fervor, and deep understanding, Ralph Keyes takes us on a tour of a world where truth and honesty are no longer absolutes but mutable, fluid concepts.
Customer Reviews:
An Entertaining Yet Challenging Read.......2005-03-07
This book manages to be highly entertaining even while it requires readers to think hard about important questions about how we live and the kind of society to which we belong. As is usual in Keyes' work, he has researched every conceivable point of view and bit of evidence on the matter: we learn and wonder about casual lies of Hillary Clinton; why the lies of Reagan and Oliver North were forgiven and those of Al Gore were not; and get a bipartisan look at the styles of lying of both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. The book features the lies many political, judicial, literary, academic leaders have told and offers a fascinating analysis of the many reasons they may have done so. We learn that the average American tells one lie a day; that both sexes lie equally, but in different ways; and that an early Puritan method for catching liars was the "ultimate no win:" put under water, liars would float and therefore survive to be executed; truth tellers would sink and be vindicated though drowned.
The author of Is There Life After High School? and ten other works of honest, comprehensive and human commentaries on how we live today, Keyes combines humor with ethical concerns and compelling insight. The reader is treated to "A Brief History of Lying" which puts our current dilemma into historical context. The problem is not that we are the first generation to lie: it is that we are increasingly willing to believe that it doesn't matter if we lie; that a lie can be considered a "deeper truth" or that we no longer have to make distinctions between what is true and what can be made true. Keyes examines the consequences of an increased indifference to lying in terms of the trust that is required between people who need and depend on each other. Having taken us to the bleak awareness of the extent of untruth in our society, he shows compassion for the dilemma of those struggling with the truth. He relates examples of how individuals and communities opt for honesty and describes ways in which people can consciously relearn the value and satisfaction of being known as themselves rather than through false words and histories.

Required Reading For All Americans.......2004-11-12
This well-researched and cogently written expose should be required reading for all Americans. Mr. Keyes utilizes both anecdotal evidence, and to the extent it is available, statistics and other evidence, to demonstrate that "truth" is a rapidly vanishing value in our current society. He then explains that the ramifications of this value decline are significant; the ability to be able to "presume" honesty is at the core of our relationships, both personal, financial, and professional.
Indeed, dishonesty is our society is so prevelant that the truth-teller is currently at a distinct disadvantage. The witness is a judicial proceeding who tells the truth without embellishment will be discounted, as judges and juries presume that the witness, like all those before them, has exagerrated. Similarly, the job applicant who does not fudge will be rejected, as fudging is now presumed.
Despite its weighty subject, Mr. Keyes' writing style is engaging. Moreover, the validity of Mr. Keyes' points are reinforced by everyday life. I highly recommend this book.

Rigger 3 Revised features everything that the rigger needs to go beyond the rules in Shadowrun, Third Edition. This book offers vehicle construction rules for everything from drones to ships and beyond, to advanced sensor and electronic countermeasures. It even provides rules for security riggers - those intrepid runners who jump into a building's security system and "pilot" the building itself. Rigger 3 Revised also contains information for running smuggling operation, plus guidelines for the border patrols that hunt down smugglers. Please note that this product has changed significantly from the Rigger 3 book released by FASA - many corrections have been made and images have been added!
Customer Reviews:
IIf you are into Rigging, this is it.......2004-03-15
If you want some extra rigging rules, droids, vehicules, etc this is the book you want. Specially considering this is the revised edition which includes upto date errata and corrections.
As usual, the main Shadowrun book is enough to do some rigging but if you plan on doing it for serious, get this.
Book Description
Rigger 3, the advanced vehicle book revised for Shadowrun, 3rd Edition, offers rules for designing unique vehicles, using state-of-the-art sensors and electronic countermeasures, running a smuggling operation, and everything else that can be done in or with a vehicle. This rules supplement replaces Rigger 2.
Customer Reviews:
Mostly just a reprint.......2001-07-04
First, I'd like to clarify the 3 stars. If you do not have Rigger 2, then this book could get 4 stars. It has rather good information for rigger characters in Shadowrun. I don't recommend it as a general-purpose book, as the Cannon Companion and Man and Machine books are because it just doesn't do enough. From a non-rigger player perspective, it offers very little to be used in any campaign. From the rigger or GM perspective, though, it is a very valuable tool.
The biggest problem with the book, however, is that it differs very little from the Rigger 2 book. Pretty much the only change is the addition of ships and subs and the rules governing them. If you already own the Rigger 2 book, I urge you not to waste your money with this book. While the other 3rd edition books offer good consolidations, reorganizations and even large rewrites, this one really includes none of that.
MUST HAVE.......2001-05-16
If you never buy another Shadowrun book, ever, you must purchase this one. It expands the rules covering vehicles and drones in the Shadowrun universe. It changes vehicle pricing and the way certain things work. All in all, it's a great resource to have.
A long awaited overhaul.......2001-05-05
I've played Shadowrun since 1990 and once tried to collaborate on a 'net project to overhaul the Rigger Blackbook. I once argued that GURPS Vehicles (1st ed.) by Steve Jackson Games was the _real_ Rigger Blackbook (only published by the wrong company *grin*).
With that on my resume, I confidently exclaim that Rigger 3 represents a long awaited overhaul and expansion for the neglected rigger. For years, anyone who wanted to play a rigger had to endure weak rules that made play impossible even for those "never say die" fans who struggled to make sense of the anemic and confusing construction rules.
With Rigger 3, the rigger not only becomes a viable player character, but he may very well be the most versitile and dangerous member of any shadowrun team! This book includes outstanding construction rules for anything mechanical and visible to the naked eye, and now your PCs can steal boats, cars or tanks and actually take off without stopping the game to invent rules.
For me the most exciting part of Rigger 3 was the volumes of material on drones - from bug-sized crawling drones, to aerial drones, to remote controlled vehicles. It's wonderful! I love the idea of a rigger and her army of drones (depicted on the cover). Orders can be issued to single or multiple drones or the rigger can "move into" an individual drone or vehicle and take control with a first-hand perspective. Drones rules.
And finally, I'm satisifed they resolved the "ghost-in-the-machine" debate, and that the vehicle is an extension of the rigger's body (heart-engine, oil-blood, wheels-legs) rather than the rigger losing her spirit in the machine (e.g. decker).
Excelent.......2001-04-16
This book is a must for any rigger, street sam,merc,shaman......
add some flavor to your runs this book is great clarifies rules on vehicle combat building vehicles and customising vehicles A great buy

Book Description
This is a selection of essays from the author's Web site, http://www.joelonsoftware.com. Joel Spolsky started the web log in March 2000 in order to offer his insights, based on years of experience, on how to improve the world of programming. His extraordinary writing skills, technical knowledge, and caustic wit have made him a programming guru. This log has become infamous among the programming world, and is linked to more than 600 other websites and translated into 30+ languages!
This book covers every imaginable aspect of software programming, from the best way to write code to the best way to design an office in which to write code. The book will relate to all software programmers (Microsoft and Open Source), anyone interested in furthering their knowledge of programming, or anyone trying to manage a programmer. Spolsky will be writing an introduction for the book.
Customer Reviews:
An Easy, Compelling, Informative Read.......2007-09-02
In this book, Mr. Spolsky makes dozens of apt, lucid observations and suggestions about the state of the industry and the practice of software development as it applies to developers, managers and CEOs alike. Don't be discouraged by his occasionally flippant treatment of some issues--whether you agree with him or not, it would be downright foolish to do anything but devour the veritable fountain of knowledge contained within this book. Mr. Spolsky clearly shows an honest and empathetic concern for the health of the software industry and ALL of the people involved in its enrichment.
Top notch insites into the field of technology..........2007-07-05
Though you probably won't agree with everything Joel says about the development and use of software in the technology realm, he presents his viewpoints in a way that will make you think through your argument and come out on the other side with a more thorough understanding on the subject and its role in business.
He presents multiple delicious morsels of knowledge that stem from his professional experience (both good and bad) that make you say "well, duh!! That makes sense." A very easy and enjoyable read.
Real experience in a book.......2007-06-09
I like most the lively style of the book. Reading this kind of excellent stuff reminds me that sometimes there are authors that goes so deep in theory that forgets about reality.
For example, I am not an enthusiast of any operating system but his explanations about Ms Esxel gives quite a lot of light on the subject. Each chapter is a good combination of hands-on experience and easy reading.
...it is only 20$! if it is bad (and I am wrong) you will not loose to much.
Common Sense over Dogma.......2007-04-10
This is a great book for the techie-turned-manager, and for the career manager with an open mind. I can see Joel's philosophy enraging the typlical corporate middle manager who is steeped in "methodologies" and "certified processes". And that's a good thing. Joel takes an empirical approach, describing his experiences, and what he has learned that works or does not work.
Those who disdain wry wit will be frustrated with this book. Those who savor it will feel like they're being taught by one of their own. The writing style is loose and light, and easy to read. If software design documents were written more like this, they'd be far more readable -- and in fact, far more pleasant to write.
One thing to note is that it can often seem like the examples discussed do not apply to your type of organization. To appreciate the author's understanding of that issue, I recommend that you read through chapter twelve, "Five Worlds", early on. You'll see that he does understand the different kinds of organizations and software projects.
This is one of those books that belongs on the "close at hand" shelf of just about anyone in the software business. It empowers the reader to strive for the common sense approach over "heavy iron" dogma in developing a management style and in making decisions. This book makes a great gift for anyone you know who is moving into a software management role, or anyone who is frustrated with "management by tradition" and the status quo.
A must for any software developer who is passionate about developing software.......2007-01-22
I took this book with me on my island holiday and consumed it faster than my cosmopolitan cocktails. Everything in this book rings true and it is a must read for any software developer that cares about improving themselves and others.
Book Description
A book of adventure and hope, vividly portraying one manÂ's successful quest for meaning. A life covering the grand panorama of the 20th century, filled with tragedy and triumph, intense passion, verve, and a whole lot of guts, glory and wit. Hans Kraus was a legendary rock climber, known for hair-raising ascents on two continents. Few realized he was the same man considered one of the great unsung medical pioneers of the 20th century, making headline news throughout the second half of the 1950Â's, guest of honor at EisenhowerÂ's White House, cover story of major magazines throughout America, including Sports Illustrated.
His pioneering work in muscles and fitness uncovered a shocking truth about American children. And his work curing back pain brought him into the Kennedy White House and inner circle of Camelot. Here now is the life of Hans Kraus, including the never before told story of KennedyÂ's back, based on new documentation, including KennedyÂ's own White House back records and first time interviews with two Kennedy White House doctors. Kraus lived life so fully, so fearlessly, another famous climber said, ÂHis cojones are so big he needs a bag to carry them in. (author website: susanebschwartz.com)
ÂAnyone who was anyone went to Kraus.ÂÂMike Wallace
ÂBravo! Schwartz does an excellent job portraying a life that Hollywood could have scripted.ÂÂJames M. Clash, Adventurer columnist, Forbes Magazine, and author of To The Limits
ÂI kept turning the pages. Schwartz is a born story teller.Â
American Alpine Club, past President Jim McCarthy
Customer Reviews:
A remarkable man.......2007-06-15
I was so pleased to see that Dr. Kraus's biography had been published, I bought this book last year, read it in three days and truly enjoyed it. A mix of history, medicine and the joys and dangers of climbing mountains. A lovely account of a memorable, inspiring personality, whose name lives on thanks to his innovative ideas in the medical field and the thousands he cured, including President Kennedy, all the way through his beloved family and friends and, of course, his beloved mountains.
I looked into the points raised by Mr. Franz Kraus, Dr. Kraus's younger brother, as reported in his own review and found them interesting. I felt that, coming from such a close family member, it was only fair to print them and add them to my own copy of the book, to give it a sense of completeness which at first sight did not seem to lack upon finishing the book, however his comments made me think twice about a few facts/details not accurately reported by the author.
In any case, I feel that the missing/incorrect details didn't tarnish the essence of this book and I truly think it is a must-read. Historically and medically interesting, it's also an inspiring, beautiful read, for all of you out there who love the mountains. Enjoy!
A Must Read for Health Care Professionals.......2006-05-17
Book: "Into the Unknown, The Remarkable Life of Hans Kraus" by Susan Schwartz
copyright 2005
This book is a must read for any bodyworker, physical therapist, orthopedic doctor or mountain climber. Dr. Hans Kraus was a pioneer mountain climber and pioneer bodyworker who is one of our most unknown and unsung twentieth century heroes. He rejected our commonly accepted treatments for musculoskelatal conditions of drugs and surgery for hands on bodywork and exercise. Time Magazine listed him as one of the prominent medical pioneers along with Dr. Salk of the polio vaccine and Edward Jenner of the smallpox vaccine. His contribution to health research was simple and easy. It was bodywork and exercise. He became the Back Doctor to President John Kennedy. When Janet Travell was promoting her trigger point theories she was giving Kennedy trigger point injections with procaine and lidocaine. Kennedy had had two failed back surgeries and this was kept secret. When Travell's treatment stopped working, Hans Kraus was called in. He began doing trigger point injections of saline solution only with big needles. Very similar to what we do with elbows and knuckles. Then he did bodywork, massage and began an exercise program. Kennedy said this was the most benefical program he had ever done. And Kraus had to sign a confidentiality agreement so the press did not find out how injured Kennedy was. The anecdotes in this book are remarkable and professionally notated. Hans noted that Kennedy's back pain got worse when he was home with his wife and mother. He seemed to be able to handle averting World War Three easier than dealing with his family. This is of interest to the Hellerworkers and others trained in dialogue.
Some of you may remember the Presidential Fitness Program of Kennedy's. This was inspired by Hans Kraus.
Hans Kraus also put together a series of 6 postural muscle tests that he claimed would predict back pain incidents. These simple exercises could be used as part of a physical exam in just the same way that we do blood tests to predict health conditions. If a person could not touch their toes or hold a sit up for 10 seconds then exercises were prescribed to correct this situation. Hans attempted to get these included in the public school system of New York. The resistance won out. I'll bet the insurance companies today would love to have access to this kind of testing and study. We (Hellerwork) could be the ones to promote this.
Hans also has some very good techinques for not immobilising, casting or splinting broken or sprained bones. He said and practiced that muscle work and movement was much more efficient to repairing broken bones and sprains.
The book is an easy read, fun and professionally annotated with a complete bibliography.
I got reinspired to our work (Hellerwork) and am looking forward to some current research projects we could in this area.
The book is available in soft or hard cover from Amazon.
Enjoy.
Dr. Jim Dohn
GREAT READ FOR HISTORY BUFFS.......2006-04-10
"Into the Unknown" is a compelling read for both the casual reader and for anyone interested in modern presidential history. As a biography of a fascinating character, it is difficult to put down. More significantly it is a 'must' for anyone interested in unravelling the mysteries of President Kennedy's health and the conflicts amongst the crowd of doctors who treated him.
Into The Unknow : The Remarkable Life of Hans Kraus.......2006-04-06
What a life Doctor Hans Kraus lived. His climbing and medical accomplishments are amazing and Schwartz has given us a wonderful look into his life. If you are a climber, have back pain, enjoy presidential history, or love a great story you need to read this book.
A marvlous Story.......2006-03-12
Schwartz has done a fine thing recording this remarkable life. This is a great read for anyone who appreciates the unsung hero. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in biography, the outdoors, and good health.
Book Description
The Venture of Islam has been honored as a magisterial work of the mind since its publication in early 1975. In this three-volume study, illustrated with charts and maps, Hodgson traces and interprets the historical development of Islamic civilization from before the birth of Muhammad to the middle of the twentieth century. This work grew out of the famous course on Islamic civilization that Hodgson created and taught for many years at the University of Chicago.
In this concluding volume of The Venture of Islam, Hodgson describes the second flowering of Islam: the Safavi, Timuri, and Ottoman empires. The final part of the volume analyzes the widespread Islamic heritage in today's world.
"This is a nonpareil work, not only because of its command of its subject but also because it demonstrates how, ideally, history should be written."—The New Yorker
Customer Reviews:
deep, rich, well considered and comprehensive.......2000-06-17
This review really applies to all three volumes. Hodgson's work is not for those new to Islamic studies, and his writing style is complex. Few are the sentences that lack at least one subjunctive clause. But his adoption of key Arabic terms in his narrative; his broad geographic sweep, from Andalusia and the Sahel through Nile and Oxus to India and Indonesia; and his comprehensive consideration of political, social, religious, cultural, and economic aspects of civilization make for a series as broad and deep as this student of history could want. It took me several years to read the whole set, as only recently did I have enough interest in the artistic and philisophic (falsafah) traditions.

A book that has stood the test of time........2007-08-11
Now in its 5th edition, this book has become "the" muscle testing book to have. Who's it for? Anyone who has a need to be able to MANUAL muscle test any of the body's muscles. This would include such professionals as doctors, nurses, physical therapists, athletic trainers, personal trainers, etc.
How does the book work? Well, you look up the particular muscle you want to test, look at the picture of the test position, and then simply apply manual pressure to the limb in the instructed direction. If it sounds easy, it is the way this book shows you- included are dozens and dozens of GREAT pictures that show you precisely what to do. So if you have a need to test muscles, I highly recommend you get this book- its a little bit more expensive than some of the other muscle testing books, but its the best I've come across so far- in fact it sits right on my desk for reference. Readers who treat a lot of shoulder patients may also be interested in Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff.
Worth every penny!.......2007-03-05
This book is so comprehensive and yet so comprehensible. And it reads so smoothly for a textbook! This is a must-have!!!
Invaluable for your library.......2006-04-08
In the fields of fitness, physical therapy, sports, orthopedics or anatomy and biomechanical interest, this book is a classic that should prove invaluable to you. It can help professionals or laypeople discover muscular imbalances, injuries and causes of pain in their bodies or the bodies of others.
It is clearly and well presented, very well-researched and accepted in the medical field. My main profession is fitness and health trainer and this book is a tremendous contribution to my practice.
BEST BOOK FOR MUSCLE TESTING.......2006-03-22
Being an athletic training student, this is by far the most useful book i have bought. It has the muscle testing in simple terms with pictures. I recommend if for anybody going to be an athletic trainer.

Reference for OTs and PTs.......2005-11-30
I found this book (older edition) at one of my clinical sites. It it well put together and easy to follow. This is a great text for students who are learning MMT. I only wish that I had know about this book sooner.
A Must Have For All Body Therapies!.......2004-03-17
This is an excellent book.
It is a important reference book which I use and read cover to cover. The biggest plus about this book is the concept of alignment, and the various grouping of restrictions and weaknesses within the body. It shows this and explains these (rectrictions vs weakeness) very clearly and specifically which makes it easy to pick up theses patterns in people's bodies.
Although there are better books which are set out better, the commentary and insights contained within the book are invaluable.
It is a bit of a bible in many physical therapy circles.
Don't get too caught up, and remember that this book should only be a start point as things are more complicated than this.
Worthwhile purchase.......2000-10-30
If you ever needed to know what all the muscles in the body were, where exactly they attached to the skeleton, what movement they created, and ways to test how strong they are this is the bible. As a physical therapist, this has been an invaluable book to have both as a student and as a clinician.
Book to work with.......1999-02-07
This is a refined and refinded text of an excellent book. It has a place in so many therapists bookcase eg.Osteopaths chiropractors physiotherapists etc etc. Go and buy!

Book Description
This timely book presents strategies for mitigation of the greenhouse effect. It provides practical counter measures to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Key substitute technologies discussed include energy efficiency and conservation, biomass, and nuclear energy. These technologies are both mature and can be applied on a large scale. Important concepts can apply to other technologies as well. Technologies for a Greenhouse-Constrained Society will help scientists and engineers identify the technological and policy actions needed to counteract the greenhouse effect. Solutions are aimed at both developed and developing countries. Technologies for a Greenhouse-Constrained Society will appeal to environmental engineers and scientists, meteorologists, social scientists, geologists, educators, fuel engineers, energy engineers, economists, and others interested in this field.
