Book Description
As late as 1976, George Roy Hill was the first and only director to have two films on the all-time top ten box office hits: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting (both starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman). A filmmaker with a diverse background in music, drama and television, Hill proved to be a popular storyteller in a variety of genres. His films are tied to important American themes and reflect an ironic, bittersweet vision of life.
The book begins with a discussion of the way Hill's films often make their most important statements on the subtextual level. The stories entertain, but the subtext is often disturbing, contradictory, unresolved. Hill felt that all of his major characters "create an environment, a fantasy, an illusion, and then go on to make it happen." It continues by tracing the thematic characteristics that are consistent with Hill's depiction of protagonists who create their own environments and then attempt to inhabit them. Then, individual chapters study in detail the art, craft and style of each of his films, including Thoroughly Modern Millie, Slaughterhouse Five, A Little Romance, The World According to Garp, Little Drummer Girl and Hill's last film Funny Farm.

Book Description
Handy advice on how to survive, thrive, and be spectacular. These experiential, very real commentaries from today's underground luminaries offer honest and humorous advice on everything from "Door Etiquette for the Nightlife-Challenged" by Clint Catalyst to "How to be an Art Star" by downtown New York City scenester Reverend Jen.
Customer Reviews:
We All Need Someone We Can Lean On.......2005-11-16
A compendium of useful tips, GOOD ADVICE will increase your chances for success in every imaginable field. Jennifer Blowdryer has located exactly the right team of experts to help her out with the writing. If they don't know their stuff, they have access to those who do, and their insights will surprise you. They interview tattooists, for example, about what tattoo they'd rather quit the business than do again. "Yosemite Sam" was the reply. Who'd have thought that the obstreperous Warner Bros. pioneer would produce such a reaction? I would have picked a dozen other denizens of Toon Town as my candidate for overkill. I wonder who likes Yosemite Sam enough to have him tattooed on their skin? I remember him in KNIGHTY-NIGHT BUGS, and that was a sad, sad day for me.
There's a delicious article on how to survive prison. I appreciated the tip about, once you're there, stop trying to run the lives of people on the outside. And there's a good article about how to run up credit cards and abscond without paying your bills, for "there is no debtor's prison in America." Editor Blowdryer provides the best advice herself, however, and she has her own take on everything from the Gabor Sisters to why you should never say anything bad to one person in a couple about the other, even if they are on the outs with each other at the moment. It will come back and haunt you.
She has lived a thousand lives, and with this book you will gain admission into the secret sanctorum of her inner brain, where her heart and her conscience often go to pay their respects. You'll have some good laughs, but better than that you will be confronted with someone very special, a pure soul like one of the characters in an old Robert Bresson movie.
Loved it........2005-06-28
Jennifer Blowdryer never fails to blow my mind. Witty, sarcastic, raw and real. She is insightful, articulate, a survivor and has a beautiful way of consuming the world.
The book includes chapters on how to work a room, how to raise kids, drugs (doing `em and not doing `em), how to survive in prison and buying, using and packing a strap-on. Contributors include Jennifer Blowdryer, Clint Catalyst, Bucky Sinister, Lynn Breedlove and many other talented peeps.
I especially enjoyed the "how to do your time in prison" piece. So many of my friends from the neighborhood I grew up in went to prison. As a youngster I figured eventually everyone ends up there so it was inevitable for me too. Consequently I have been squirreling away prison survival techniques since I was about 14 years old. Luckily I have not had to use 'em. Better safe than sorry!

Customer Reviews:
Not too bad.......2007-03-23
If you liked the first book, The Art of Warcraft, then you'll probably enjoy this one, too. As expected, this book is packed with concept art and beautifully painted digital art. From characters to environments, this book has it. However, unlike The Art of Warcraft book, this one doesn't have as much text to explain the new characters, environments, and weapons. This book, as well as The Art of World of Warcraft book, seems like it was slapped together in a hurry so that it could be released to the public.
If this one had more text behind it and a little more organization, I would have given it more stars, but for those of you who care only for illustrations, then this book will probably appeal more to you.

Great.......2006-11-23
This book is a fantastic display of artwork. Anyone who enjoys conceptual artwork will enjoy this book. The hardback cover makes it a nice collectors item. The book itself has sketch work, as well as full color renderings, and everything in between. The amount of detail is amazing. The artists at Blizzard definately know their stuff, and it clearly shows in this book. A great gift for any fan of Warcraft or conceptual artwork in general.
Top of the line!.......2006-08-12
The book I got was in excellent condition, and when I looked through it. Wow! I was blown away. It's extraordinary. Such and incredible piece of art! There is so much to learn from the artists in it, and it'll be such a great inspiration. One of the best books I have ever bought!
quick and painless.......2006-06-28
Actually I had bought the first concept book from blizzard and loved it. And when I found that it was available through amazon I was relieved becuase it was part of limited edition package. But anyhow the delievery was quick and I am pleased with the art. Alot to look at and get inspired from.
Good stuff.......2006-03-22
I've always been impressed with the artwork with Warcraft, so books like these are always a treat. Although this one didn't have as much artwork as the first artbook the released "the Art of Warcraft", it still made an impact.
Beautful.......2006-03-21
If you are a fan of World of Warcraft, this is a must have. Some of the most beautiful and inspiring game art I've seen in a while. Dont miss this one.

Book Description
This book shows how the UN has proven inept at maintaining world peace and promoting human rights. The author proposes a smaller version of the organization, refocused on simpler aims.
Customer Reviews:
Deeply Flawed and Sharply Biased Study.......2007-04-09
Muravchik has written an inconsistent and contradictory work that masquerades as a serious study. He reviews the history of the UN's successes and purported failures, along with its well-known organizational inadequacies. He then proposes a preposterous set of "solutions" to the UN's problems. In a section that would be funny if it weren't so dangerous, he proposes the elimination of the UN Security Council and General Assembly. What does he propose to substitute in their place? He states, "The UN would continue as a gathering place for diplomats from all over, a high-level salon." Then, "If nations had issues on which they wished to express themselves, nothing would stop them from calling a meeting of whomever was interested." So much for scholarship the American Enterprise Institute.
Short but incisive.......2006-07-23
This slim but info-packed book explores the dismal history of the UN and offers some suggestions for reform. Muravchik is an expert on the behaviour of the organization, describing the waste, corruption and expedient vote trading in an illuminating but detached manner. Covering its history, he discusses both its overwhelming failure as peacekeeper and the limited success of its humanitarian efforts. Noting that the UN has failed utterly as a promoter of peace, he observes that it will always have its devotees because the concept of a "world parliament" sounds so noble.
It is perhaps understandable that during the Cold War the UN could not achieve much. But its record since 1991 has been equally, if not more, disgraceful. That is because the members are mostly totalitarian regimes representing ruling cliques and not the citizens of their countries. Muravchik chronicles the long list of failures and the UN's complicity in human rights abuses and corruption on a breathtaking scale. The tragic failures include Darfur, Kosovo, Rwanda, Somalia and Bosnia. Then there is the Oil For Food scandal and the abuse of children by UN peacekeepers in places like Sierra Leone and Liberia. In addition, the organization has become a model of hypocrisy in its antisemitism and bashing of Israel.
The author does not believe that any current reform proposals will improve matters. He argues instead for political bodies like the Security Council to be done away with, while specialized agencies like the World Health Organization deserve to survive. He also thinks that the organization's role as an informal diplomatic forum might serve a useful purpose. In the interim, regional alliances like NATO are far more effective at keeping the peace. Other valuable books dissecting the United Nations include The UN Gang by Pedro Sanjuan, Tower Of Babble by Dore Gold and The UN Exposed by Eric Shawn.
A sober analysis of the United Nations.......2006-03-19
This book does a fine job of summarizing the performance of the United Nations during the past sixty years. The UN has not been too good at preserving peace. And as the author points out, in the case of the Sinai in 1967, it actually helped to precipitate a conflict! There were some successes, but there were huge failures in Bosnia, Serbia, and Rwanda that make one wonder if the UN is of any value at all.
Perhaps the UN is at its worst in the field of human rights. Muravchik explains one reason is that roughly half of the most oppressive governments on Earth are members of the UN's commission on human rights! That's why the world's worst human rights offenders ordinarily get away without mention. Still, as the author explains, each year about a dozen less powerful states do actually get criticized, always with just one mildly worded resolution. The one exception is Israel, which gets a big bunch of harsh (and totally absurd) resolutions every year. Muravchik says of this that "in a thousand ways, the UN acts as a kind of permanent pogrom against the Jewish state."
The author includes four excellent appendices, showing (among other things) the freedom score and frequency of voting the way the United States does for the 190 UN nations other than the US, and the amount of money each nation pays to support the UN.
Well, what recommendations does Muravchik have? I would like to outlaw the UN, but Muravchik is far more moderate than I: he merely wants to abolish the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Commission on Human Rights, and other useless or pernicious agencies. He'd keep the building, and he'd let folks meet there.
Muravchik explains that we Americans often view government as a necessary evil. That's true. On the other hand, he says that world government is an unnecessary evil. I agree. I also agree with his suggestion to replace the political bodies by ad hoc ones that would command respect by their own actual merits. I think that would indeed be helpful, given that the agencies we now see have been so horribly perverted.
I recommend this book.
Book Description
Vast and majestic, the Grand Canyon represents one of scienceÂ's most challenging puzzles: How did this massive canyon come to be? This is the story of the search for the answers, and the first account of the consensus geologists have reached in the last few years.
A scientific detective tale packed with colorful characters, Grand Canyon follows the explorers, adventurers, and geologists whose efforts led to the understanding of the canyonÂ's mysteries. Modern scientists have revealed that the Colorado River once ran in the opposite directionÂand for many years flowed hundreds of feet beneath the ground. These efforts also led directly to the discovery of tectonic plates, one of the most important advancements in the history of geology. An eloquent, breathtaking narrative, Grand Canyon is a fascinating true story that is as epic as its subject. BACKCOVER: ÂPowellÂ's well-crafted account makes one appreciate just how [the Grand Canyon] came to be so grand.Â
ÂNatural History
ÂGrand Canyon will be enjoyed by anyone who is curious about how geologists think, piece together disparate information, and assemble explanations.Â
ÂScience
ÂWhat many readers will walk away with is a sense of the awesome power of water running over the surface of the earth.Â

Not much geology.......2007-08-31
"Geologists I admire" might be a better title. There is an awful lot more scattershot history of the exploration of the GC than there is explanation of geology. Plus it skimps on maps, diagrams, photos, drawings.

Worth a read if you're somewhat technically curious.......2006-07-11
I think James Lawrence Powell had pretty big ambitions for this book when he set out to write it: to tell an adventure story or two about the early exploration of the Southwest, to give the history of the development of several important geological concepts, to go into the biographical details of a few of the leading figures in the field, and to bring the interested lay reader with some but not too much technical background up to date on where Grand Canyon science stands at the moment, the basic question being "How did this thing get here?". Yes, we know the Colorado River did it, but exactly how and when?
For the most part he was successful at these somewhat disparate tasks, though I don't think I can give a grade higher than B+/A- for the overall product. Here were my "issues" with the book:
1) At times it went off in one direction a little too far for my tastes (mostly in the adventure/biography parts), and it was a bit of a confusing mish-mash at others if you can't keep the whole panoply of figures fully in mind. The multiple objectives led to a little gear-stripping at times as the topic changed back and forth.
2) I was most disappointed with the maps: they seem to be scattered around somewhat at random (I found myself flipping pages a lot trying to find this or that map), and I swear some important features mentioned in the text can't be found on the one where you'd think you'd find it - i.e., the maps don't seem to have been made for the book but rather pasted in from some other source.
3) Finally, while the "grandest puzzle" is at heart a science puzzle involving river system geology, I thought the author avoided going into too much scientific detail for fear of perhaps alienating the reader. I would have liked more science, and sooner in the book. I.e., I don't think downcutting rates (with actual numbers) were even mentioned until the very last pages. Powell has a clear talent for deftly explaining technical concepts and should have used it more. But if you're looking for the current state of the science on the Grand Canyon you'll have to plow through a lot of seemingly marginally relevant material first, as Powell seemed more determined to develop fully the whole history of all the relevant ideas involved. As the book had a "teachy" tone to it, it may have worked better for me if it had been in more of an actual textbook format; fundamental concepts layed out first, then assembled into a comprehensive model. Maybe one has to be an actual practitioner in the field to fully appreciate the history and biography.
Still, Powell is a very good writer and the book is basically not hard reading in the least. I think it would be good for someone who wants to understand how the Grand Canyon came about but wants the telling occasionally spiced up with frequently colorful characters overcoming obstacles and limitations (both physical and mental). If you think this book might interest you, don't let the drawbacks I noted keep you from picking it up as they're not fatal flaws by any means. Almost any book on the Grand Canyon will give you a greater appreciation of it, and this is no different.
Excellant overview.......2006-04-24
This is a lovely overview of the Grand Canyon, its discovery by Europeans, and its study by scientists from the mid 19th century to the present time. It is sort of a history of a history.
While the author discusses early Spanish visits to or near misses of the Canyon, he spends most of the first several chapters discussing John Wesley Powell's voyage of discovery and his documentation of the Colorado River's course to the Gulf of California. This is almost an adventure story in itself, and serves to capture the imagination in a way that most geological works don't. Although the quotes from Powell's work seemed a little over-the-top, I still felt like getting a copy of his work to read it for myself. Certainly the discussion of his later life produces a much more rounded and engaging portrait of the man than most texts provide.
Succeeding chapters deal with the careers of Powell and his various coworkers and successors and the development of theories regarding the Grand Canyon's origins. In the process, the author also discusses the history of geology and of the theory of earth history, covering among other things, the work of Nicholas Steno, James Hutton, Louis Agassiz, Charles Lyell, and Alfred Wegener. For the geology student these names will already be familiar; for others the brief introduction will offer a quick recitation of the Who's Who of geology without belaboring the point.
Professor Powell's discussion makes it apparent that the science of geology is as much a work in progress as the Grand Canyon itself, since the concept of the canyon building processes have been reshaped as geology itself has matured as a field. He carries the reader through the thought processes of each of the researcher's contributions, ending the book with a final summation of his own on the subject that he admits is thoroughly tentative but is still a best approximation. Among the most interesting points on the Canyon is the fact that, while on first glance it seems so obvious with respect to its structure, dynamics and age, it is in fact much more complex than it appears.
The author's style is very readable, although there were places where I got rather lost in the descriptions of channels, directions, etc. along the course of the river. Anyone intimately familiar with the terrain, however, will have little difficulty following the discussion, but those of us less familiar with the Canyon will find it somewhat confusing. The gist of the information is, however, quite clear.
Those not familiar with geology will find the author provides explanations of terms in context, and will also find a glossary of terms at the back of the book. For the most part, the description of erosional and depositional processes is quite clear and does not require any background in the subject. It would probably serve as a good book for high school libraries, since its presentation of science as a profession and a discipline is quite clear.
A thoroughly enjoyable book for those interested in the history of geology, history of science, history of the West, John Wesley Powell's expeditions and contributions, structural geology and geomorphology, the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon, and hydrodynamics.
