Not the Last word in Catholic reviews.......2002-06-10
This source generally accomplishes what it tries to acheive by rating many movies from a somewhat Catholic perspective and can be useful in screening out some obviously offensive films. It may also help you to identify some good films you where previously unaware of.
It has three weeknesses from my perspective. 1: It is generally week in reviewing many foriegn classics. Even several important works of Kurosawa and C. Theodore Drieser and others are not reviewed in this book. So as a guide to findings foriegn classics, you may be dissapointed.
2: The reviews are often taken from a very superficial viewpoint, I suspect many of the reviews where done by someone given an assignment to review a set number of films and that person may have lacked the insight or experience to review the film adequately. For example, in reviewing the various Mutiny on the Bounty films, all reviews predictably laud those films which portray Fletcher Christian as the hero and Captain Bligh as the villian. 'The Bounty'(Mel Gibson) is panned for not being true to this pattern. Those who truly know the full story of the Bounty know that Chritian was far from perfect and that the unfortunate Bligh had his good points. Not to mention that Chritian's subversion of authourity led to the Deaths of many. Is he really a hero? Another Example, this guide predictably pans 'Tombstone', largely for its violence. However a review of the true history of this event shows that the film was not far from the truth of events, including the ugly but real violence. Doc Holiday's deathbed conversion to Catholicism is portrayed and did happen. Why not point out these positives? Just because violence is in a film should not discredit it (all to often in this book). It is the context and use of violence which matters. Anyone familiar with just war theory knows that the Church does not condemn all use of force.
3: At times supports films that a Catholic should outright reject. Example, this book does not pan the film 'Dirty Dancing'. A silly movie in which the heroine tries to help finance an abortion for Patrick Swayze's dance partner. This is shown as a real selfless act. In addition the multitude of dance scene's in which the couples are generally grinding their midsections with one another can only send one message to impressionable youth about where happiness comes from. Hello!~ someone wants an abortion as a result of this behavior!
Great guide...........2000-01-25
This book follows the USCC movie rating system. Each movie and video entry covers a synopsis of the movie and then rates it based on issues that would be of concern when viewing the show in a family setting. Excellent!
Book Description
Going far beyond the standard imagery of Rasta—ganja, reggae, and dreadlocks—this cultural history offers an uncensored vision of a movement with complex roots and the exceptional journey of a man who taught an enslaved people how to be proud and impose their culture on the world. In the 1920s Leonard Percival Howell and the First Rastas had a revelation concerning the divinity of Haile Selassie, king of Ethiopia, that established the vision for the most popular mystical movement of the 20th century, Rastafarianism. Although jailed, ridiculed, and treated as insane, Howell, also known as the Gong, established a Rasta community of 4,500 members, the first agro-industrial enterprise devoted to producing marijuana. In the late 1950s the community was dispersed, disseminating Rasta teachings throughout the ghettos of the island. A young singer named Bob Marley adopted Howell's message, and through Marley's visions, reggae made its explosion in the music world.

Good Intent, Needs Editing.......2007-02-08
I expected more from someone with Helen Lee's experience in Journalism. The book gives little actual information, and focuses instead on rambling conjecture. Though I respect the intent and agree with many of the sentiments, the structure of the book is poor and unfocused. I would recommend this book only as the most basic of introductions to rastafarianism; for anyone who knows even a little, I would suggest you look elsewhere to enhance your knowledge base.
HAILE BLESS!!!.......2004-01-20
This book was very informative and the research done was astounding!!! I would like to thank the author for her taking the time to research such a delicate and profound subject matter as most of Howell's origins are obscure. This book answered many questions for InI on this topic of InI "calling" to Rastafari. Blessed thanks!!!
Shockingly Informative.......2003-08-26
I absolutely love this book. Never really one for reading, this book has kind of enthused me to go back and actually READ some of the dozens of books I had purchased over the years but never really set down with.
As a descendant of Rastafarians (and a person whose family majority consists of Rastas, I found it very interesting, and answered some of the questions more distinctly than any of my family had in the past. Its mainly about Leonard Percival Howell, "The First Rasta", and talks mainly about his life and times, but the parts of this book that i find most interesting are the parts that deal with other figures in Rastafari culture i.e. Selassie and Marley.
As I said, I was never one for reading too much, so if this book got me re-interested in reading then there is definitely something to it. Written by the ex-wife of legend Alpha Blondy. If you're interested in the topic, not a bad place at all to start.

Fixer/Pointman adds good "spy tech" flavor to Spycraft world.......2003-10-16
The Fixer/Pointman Class Guide is the latest supplement for the Spycraft campaign setting. It is written by Scott Gearin with contributions by Alexander Flagg, Cameron Haigh, Patrick Kapera, and Clayton A. Oliver. Interior art is by Paul H. Way and cover art by Veronica V. Jones. The book is 128 pages in length, carries a retail price of $24.95 and is published by Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG).
The book is divided into four distinct focus points: prestige classes, new rules, "tradecraft" and an official mission guide. The prestige classes include the Cleaner (who handles worst case scenarios), Courier (specializes in transporting packages), Forward (a covert scout who works far behind enemy lines), Goodfella (respected member of an organized crime syndicate), Grifter (specialist thief), Inventor (tinkerer who can make almost anything), Ninja, Officer, Provocateur (specialist in indirect warfare), Ranger (wilderness expert), Saboteur and Smuggler.
The new rules include new backgrounds and how fixers and pointmen fit into existing departments (along with four new departments). There are new skill uses and new feats of several types. There are new rules for remotely operated vehicles that include chases and combat. Wrapping up the chapter are new vehicle-related rules including gadgets.
Tradecraft is the subject of chapter three. Here are topics and rules suitable for fixers and pointmen. Such topics include ambushes, brainwashing, harassment, interrogation, police actions, and using the streets to gather information, make contact and set up deals. Twenty generic sample NPC packages are included to make it easier to flesh out those contacts.
The final chapter expands upon the foundation for designing threats that is presented in the core Spycraft book, which is called the Mastermind System. Tips for developing a landmark serial, which not only brings a mastermind villain but also raises the danger level to agents, is described in detail. Threat resources allow evil organizations access to areas and things they normally would not have, such as favor checks, special minion types or even nuclear weapons. Instructions on how to use the Mastermind System to create multiple threats (instead of the single linear ones that are most common) at the same serial are included through the use of threat agendas. The biggest addition to the rules, however, is action sites. These are locations that support threat resources and simultaneously provide the GC/GM with a dedicated clue chain for his agents. Agents visiting these sites will encounter both challenges and rewards, along with the clues that will eventually lead them to the evil organization's headquarters.
The biggest asset of this book lies in the expansions of the core rules. The broader abilities of the Mastermind system coupled with the development of action sites really help in breaking away from the linear "one bad guy at a time" plot. The new rules are presented in a fashion that not only makes sense, but is also easy to comprehend and adjudicate. This is a book useable by both player and GC/GM.
Many of the prestige classes are better suited for NPCs rather than players, although some would be suitable for heavy role-play groups. This has been a bit of an ongoing issue with the Spycraft/Shadowforce Archer line in that in trying to develop more player options, some classes aren't really a good fit.
Once again, AEG has succeeded in broadening the world of Spycraft. The Fixer/Pointman Class Guide opens the rules up to another dimension by letting the Game Control craft more complex and realistic scenarios that mirror both real world events and headlines, but yet maintain that "hot and fast" feel of a Hollywood movie. Living Spycraft players can expect to see this book added to the list of useable sources in the near future. The flavor is good and the writing top notch as usual. For Spycraft fans, it's a must.

When the second edition of Programming Perl was released, the authors omitted two chapters: "Common Tasks with Perl" and "Real Perl Programs." Publisher O'Reilly & Associates soon realized that there would be too many pages in Programming Perl if it put updated recipes in the new edition. Instead, O'Reilly chose to release the many Perl code examples as a separate entity: The Perl Cookbook.
The recipes are well documented and the examples aren't too arcane; even beginners will be able to pick up the lessons taught here. The authors write in relatively easy-to-understand language (for a technical guide). Through this book and its arsenal of recipes, you will learn many new things about Perl to help you through your toughest projects. The next time you're working on a project at 2 a.m., you'll thank yourself for the guidance and direction The Perl Cookbook provides. --Doug Beaver

Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
Very useful, well worth it. Getting a book like this and having it save you the time of working out how the (yes, come on, admit it, a lot of perl syntax etc. is quite arcane) actual program should be set out, formatted or whatever, is fantastic. Several times this book has done that for me, so one of the best computer book purchases I have ever made.
Evergreen classic.......2007-07-15
Once you've learnt the syntax of a language, you want to learn the idioms, and how it's used most effectively. And given Perl's famous 'There's More The One Way To Do It' motto, you'll need all the help you can get. Perl Cookbook is that help.
Neither a reference nor a tutorial, if you've ever read another cookbook, you'll know what to expect -- after all, this is the daddy of them all. Themed chapters, consisting of short tasks that most people will find handy e.g. trimming white space from a string, or populating a hash. What makes Perl Cookbook so valuable is not just finding out how to do it, but finding out what the most efficient and idiomatic way to do it is. This is where you'll see the Perl way of doing things in action, and it's an immensely valuable learning experience, even if you never need to do exactly any of the things in the book.
For me, the most vital material is the earliest stuff, which takes you through how to use the string, array and hash, the guts of any Perl program. The final half of the book explores Perl's libraries for the use of databases, and a lot of network and web-related stuff, from simple socket programming, to CGI, and the use of mod_perl.
This is a cornucopia of Perl lore, firmly established in the Perl Canon, and deservedly so. You want it on your bookshelf if you want to really call yourself a Perl programmer.
Code examples that you can use and learn from.......2007-04-25
As a programming cookbook, this book presents a bunch of problems that you, as a Perl programmer, may encounter in your everyday development work and then shows you both the code that solves the problem and a lengthy discussion on how the code works. So far none of the problems has applied to my everyday Perl development chores, but by simly reading through some of the more interesting problems, I've learned a great deal more about Perl than before.
So this book works well as a learning tool for someone who already knows Perl but is still intrigued by its vast arsenal of powerful features -- and arcane usage. Any serious Perl programmer can be helped by this book, whether he or she finds the examples in the book directly applicable or not.
Very good examples.......2007-03-10
This book is filled with great examples by very experienced authors, which will not only show you how to do that exact thing you want to, but also point you to the Perl ways of solving problems.
As any other cookbook it's not intended for complete beginners (If you are a beginner look at "Learning Perl" by Randal L. Schwartz, Tom Phoenix, and Brian D Foy), but rather for programmers with some experience in Perl.
This book is a great recipe book which will spare you a lot of issues if you keep it at your hand while coding.
Must have for the beginning or intermediate perl programmer.......2007-02-20
I've got both the 1st and 2nd edition of this book. While my perl skills are strong, I'm not a guru my any stretch of the imagination. I've found this book useful on many occasions. Every time I've wanted to do something but wasn't sure of a good approach, I could always find examples in this book. The problem and solution approach is great. For the beginner it will help them get started right away, even if they don't quite understand what they are typing. For the intermediate user, it provides a good base of quick examples. For the advanced user, you probably wont need it, but is a handy item to hand to the guy who is always asking you perl questions.

brilliant.......2007-09-22
a book that gave me a better view of famous people's lifes. they are not all that they appear to be. worth buying spec. if you are a fan of AJ but good also if you have a friend or family member going through a tough period
A good read but..........2007-02-09
Focusses a lot more on her and her work for the group than I'd have liked, but overall good.
She provides a no-holds-barred look at Alex's decline as an addict, her own denial of his addictions, his manipulative behaviour (same as any addict's), his rock bottom, and his struggle to recover.
It's a bit unclear if it covers only his first recovery or if it covers his relapse and second recovery as well which is frustrating.
Definitately a must read for any die-hard BSB or Alex Mclean fan though!
Backstreet Mom.......2006-03-03
I would highly recommend this book not only to any Backstreet Boy fan. This book shows us all that no matter the challenge life throws at us and how difficult we think it sometimes is, only we have the power to change and most importantly we CAN change. A.J McLean along with his mother Denise should be commended. You are both an inspiration. Thankyou for sharing what would have been the most challenging and difficult time in both your lives with us. A book I will treasure!
Backstreet Mom.......2004-04-01
This is pathetic! WASTE OF MONEY; out of over 200 pages, only 9 are related to A.J.'s actual drug intervention and treatment. Mostly just about Mommy Dearest and how hard she worked for A.J. DON'T BUY IT....
Backstreet Mom..........2003-12-21
This book is fantastic, its a real eye opener, ITS A MUST READ AND IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY!!!!!!!!!1
Book Description
Volume II of The Oxford History of the British Empire examines the history of British worldwide expansion from the Glorious Revolution of 1689 to the end of the Napoleonic Wars, a crucial phase in the creation of the modern British Empire. This is the age of General Wolfe, Clive of India, and Captain Cook. An international team of experts deploy the latest scholarly research to trace and analyze development and expansion over more than a century. They show how trade, warfare, and migration created an Empire, at first overwhelmingly in the Americas but later increasingly in Asia. Although the Empire was ruptured by the American Revolution, it survived and grew into the British Empire that was to dominate the world during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Series Blurb The Oxford History of the British Empire is a major new assessment of the Empire in the light of recent scholarship and the progressive opening of historical records. From the founding of colonies in North America and the West Indies in the seventeenth century to the reversion of Hong Kong to China at the end of the twentieth, British imperialism was a catalyst for far-reaching change. The Oxford History of the British Empire as a comprehensive study allows us to understand the end of Empire in relation to its beginnings, the meaning of British imperialism for the ruled as well as the rulers, and the significance of the British Empire as a theme in world history.

When Irene Pepperberg, a professor at the University of Arizona, says goodnight, she typically hears the reply "Bye. I'm gonna go eat dinner. I'll see you tomorrow." Though the response itself is not unusual, the source is, for it comes from Alex, a gray parrot, Pepperberg's main research subject for the past 22 years. That parrots can talk is well known; what Pepperberg set out to study was their cognitive abilities. By teaching the bird the meaning--not just the sound--of words in order to communicate, she hoped to discover how his brain worked. She exhaustively details her fascinating results in The Alex Studies.
Pepperberg bought Alex--a parrot of average intelligence and without lofty pedigree or training--from a pet store when he was 1. Since working with Pepperberg, he has developed a 100-word vocabulary and can identify 50 different objects, recognizing quantities up to six, distinguishing seven colors and five shapes, and understanding the difference between big and small, same and different, over and under. He can tell you, for instance, that corn is yellow even if there is no corn in view, as well as correctly select the square object among various shapes and identify it verbally. What this all means, stresses Pepperberg, is that Alex is not merely parroting but actually thinking; he bases answers on reason rather than instinct or mimicry.
Though the anecdotes are rich and Alex makes a lively subject, this is principally a research paper relying on intricate details and a prodigious amount of data (the notes and references alone run to 79 pages). This is not light reading, particularly for the layperson. Still, The Alex Studies manages to be more than a valuable contribution to science, for in providing ample evidence of our similarities to other creatures, the book ultimately calls into question the concept of human supremacy over the animal kingdom. Pepperberg's stated goal is "to provoke awareness in humans that animals have capacities that are far greater than we were once led to expect, and to remind us that all we need to examine these capacities are some enlightened research tools." She has provided such tools in this seminal work. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
Can a parrot understand complex concepts and mean what it says? Since the early 1900s, most studies on animal-human communication have focused on great apes and a few cetacean species. Birds were rarely used in similar studies on the grounds that they were merely talented mimics--that they were, after all, "birdbrains." Experiments performed primarily on pigeons in Skinner boxes demonstrated capacities inferior to those of mammals; these results were thought to reflect the capacities of all birds, despite evidence suggesting that species such as jays, crows, and parrots might be capable of more impressive cognitive feats.
Twenty years ago Irene Pepperberg set out to discover whether the results of the pigeon studies necessarily meant that other birds--particularly the large-brained, highly social parrots--were incapable of mastering complex cognitive concepts and the rudiments of referential speech. Her investigation and the bird at its center--a male Grey parrot named Alex--have since become almost as well known as their primate equivalents and no less a subject of fierce debate in the field of animal cognition. This book represents the long-awaited synthesis of the studies constituting one of the landmark experiments in modern comparative psychology.
Customer Reviews:
Alex the african grey! The Alex Studies by Dr Irene Pepperberg.......2007-10-10
This is a great book about how Alex came to be and how he became so smart. Dr Irene Pepperberg chose Alex as a young parrot and began teaching him language and to associate words with objects. Alex became very smart and could hold a pretty decent conversation. This book shows just how intelligent parrots are and they are more than just pets, they are our lifelong companions. The Alex Studies is an excellent read, I reccomend this book highly.
Schooling psittacines.......2007-08-16
What can a bird learn? Irene Pepperberg set out to find out. As with children, the best way to assess what has been learnt is to ask. Primarily for that reason, she chose birds capable of forming human words. An African Grey parrot, who she dubbed Alex [Avian Learning EXperiment], became the subject of her investigations. Earlier efforts in laboratories were unsatisfactory. Why should Mynahs, reputedly excellent mimics, fail to learn speech in laboratory conditions? When in homes with several people providing input, they chatter endlessly, almost to distraction. The solution, Pepperberg decided, was the intense social environment. To that end, she developed a training method that produced astonishing results.
This book thoroughly documents the author's methods and results, providing a fascinating account of the cognitive abilities of at least one psittacine species, the Grey Parrot. Incorporating a technique she calls M/R - for Model/Rival, Pepperberg would "teach" an assistant what she wished Alex to learn. The bird observed this, then was encouraged to emulate the learning experience. This meant the bird had to understand what was to be learned and use its innate abilities to achieve it. Speech was the first lessons, but things moved well beyond simple words quickly. Shapes, colours and materials were the next level, with Alex discriminating among them both singly and in groupings. The object was to understand what Alex could comprehend and act on. Alex also learned to differentiate - "larger", or "different" or, most significantly for a bird - "abscence". He could note when something was missing, naming the missing object. The method resulted in Alex's expressing his own needs and wants, even ending a training session by declaring he wished to quit.
Pepperberg's research findings are in direct contradiction to past scientific efforts. The book is therefore richly detailed with the methods used and was information was obtained. There are photographs of test object layouts, even stills from X-ray videos of how Alex forms his speech. She is clearly challenging the received wisdom of established opinion. She's careful to avoid terms like "consciousness" or even "intelligence", although the latter comes in for some discussion late in the book. She finds only one example of Alex's communication she thinks can be deemed "creative". Much more important, in her view, is that we need to understand previously under-evaluated cognitive capabilities in parrots. They are a long-lived and social species, conditions which lead to interaction among individuals and reinforced learning. Social interaction, combined with carefully devised teaching methods are essential to proper learning, whether with children, other primates or psittacines. The capacity is there, and we need to recognise it. The Alex studies clearly demonstrate that at least these psittacines are capable of far more than the simply mimicry we've long attributed to them. Human primacy in learning, once considered fundamental to our place in Nature, is clearly at an end.
Pepperberg's narrative is thoroughly detailed and supported by an equally thorough bibliography. The reading may be a bit of a slog for the novice reader. The citation method breaks up sentences, a common technique with ethography studies, but cumbersome to cope with. The method is in line with her concern for academic acceptance. She excuses the approach as not desiring "to overwhelm readers with facts and figures" [although there are still plenty of those] but to encourage an enlarged sensitivity to the abilities of non-human species. She has certainly accomplished that task, and admirably. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
Brilliant work.......2007-04-13
The importance of Dr. Irene Pepperberg's work is much wider reaching than just talking parrots. This book chronicles the amazing studies she has done with Alex, her African Grey parrot in cognition and language acquistion. Discovering that Grey parrots have such abilities should make the threat to their habitat and the horror of illegal smuggling of these intelligent birds much more pressing and urgent to the public. That Dr. Pepperberg's techniques can also be applied to assisting children with learning difficulties adds to the benefits of these unique and startling discoveries. If you are interested in animal intelligence, especially if you have a Grey at home, you will be amazed by this book.
Thanks!.......2007-01-20
The book was in great condition and it arrived promptly. The price was also great- I've seen it for more than twice as much more elsewhere. Thanks for the pleasant transaction!
Excellent information, but ridiculously tough to read.......2005-03-08
The work that Irene Pepperberg and Alex have done is incredible, and this book would be fascinating if the "Notes" were included in the text and the references were footnoted at the end of the book or at the bottom of the page. While the use of APA style substantiates the credibiltiy of her research and increases the book's value as an intellectual property, it is difficult to find a complete sentence without multiple references cited in parentheses scattered throughout. This makes the normal "flow" of reading almost impossible, and unnecessarily compromises both enjoyment and ease of comprehension. Definitely read this book if you're interested, but keep the aspirin close for the headache you're bound to get while trying to sort out the legitimate text from the references.
