Book Description
A big city boy with a university education, Jim Greer was haunted by the kind of dreams that afflict people like Thurber's Walter Mitty: dreams of running away from respectable careers to live intensely, on the edge, by the sweat of your brow and the skin of your teeth. At age forty, Jim Greer fled the conventional middle-class life in Denver he believed was killing him to operate a guide and outfitting service on Colorado's Western Slope. {Riding West{ is the story of his adventures.
Some of Jim's stories of outfitting--the business of taking men and women into the wilds and supplying them with the necessities of life--are grim, others hilarious. He tells how he reinvented himself as "Doc" Greer, a cross between Holywood's rhinestone image of a cowboy and the real thing; how he struggled with the dangers posed in the high country; how he fought for his authority, and sometimes his life, with headstrong horses and mules; how apparently trivial mistakes he made while hunting bears nearlly got him killed. And how the winter comes--when clients go home and snow closes the roads--the bone-weary, dead-broke, and out-of-work outfitter retreats to town to live by his wits and dream of spring and another year in the high country.
A unique and engaging look at the life of a contemporary outfitter, {Riding West} should appeal to those interested in fishing, big-game hunting, the American West, or to city slickers who want a taste of life in the great outdoors.
Jim Greer is a graduate of the University of Denver, a former teacher, state official, and college administrator, whose heart is still in the great outdoors.
Charles Miller is a professor emeritus at Western State College, where he taught English, journalism, and film studies for thirty years.
Scott Yeager (illustrator) is a Gunnison wildlife artist and sometime guide whose work is displayed in various Western Slope galleries.
Customer Reviews:
Riding West is a real keeper!.......2000-02-04
Ordinarily I skip or only skim prefaces, but that would have been a big mistake in this book which starts right out with a hilarious account of Jim Greer's encounter with Jack Nicholson, the famous actor immediately recognizable to everyone but clueless Jim. Riding West is always entertaining and frequently moving. Greer's description of his metamorphosis from performance auditor for the Colorado legislature to outfitter in the rugged high country of Gunnison County should be of interest to anyone who has ever contemplated reinventing himself in the midstream of life. Greer emerges as a fascinating (if somewhat eccentric) personality and a superb storyteller. I hated to see this book end. Someday, I suspect, it will be made into a film. It has all the earmarks of a classic, one that belongs in the distinguished company of other such classics as A River Runs Through It.

Product Description
Though Elvis Presleys music is widely credited as starting a sea change in American popular culture, his films are often dismissed as superficial. Beyond the formulaic plotlines and the increasingly weaker songs, however, the films are rich with resonance to the changing times in which they were produced (roughly 19551970). They were also a means by which Elvis communicated deeply felt autobiographical material to his fan base, although in the guise of lighthearted escapist fare. This work takes a new stand, maintaining that Elviss 31 Hollywood features and two documentaries reveal a profound statement from the star and auteur. Analyzing each film in detail and exploring the body of work as a whole, Brode reveals the Elvis persona as a contemporary Candide, attempting to navigate an ever changing social and political landscape.

Elvis Cinema and Popular Culture.......2007-01-11
Save your money! This author can't be serious! I laughed through most of what he thinks is a serious topic. I have never read such psychobabble in my life. Throughout the entire book he is hung up on the same 2 subjects which are certainly part of the dumb Elvis movies but nothing that any reasonable person would take seriously. The movies were meant to be just fun & nothing more. There is no underlying message in any of those movies. Except for Jailhouse Rock & King Creole, the movies are about the same, just meant for young kids to be entertained by a good looking guy who can sing. This author is just trying to impress readers with his supposed knowledge & his vocabularly. If he sees underlying sexual perversion in an Elvis movie, I'd hate to see how he reacts to the movies of today! He needs to get a life, some movies are just meant for one thing only - entertainment. They don't have to mean anything. Poor guy.

Awesome Elvis Book!.......2002-10-12
This book is a must for any Elvis fan. Just read the foreward by actress Yvonne Craig who co-starred in two of Elvis' movies. This book talks about his movie career like no other book has done. The information is fun and educational. The book is illustrated with magnificent, unique international posters. When reading the book, it is as enjoyable as your favorite childhood storybook because the illustrations describe what has been written. The collecting section gives the novice and experienced collector useful and valuable information. This section is unique in that it describes many of the U.S. movie posters but also features information about collecting foreign posters which is not readily available to the collector. Finally, there is a special pricing section for the American movie posters which shows the increase in prices from 1983 to 2002 for the Elvis posters.

Book Description
As Americans enter the new century, their interest in the past has never been greater. In record numbers they visit museums and historic sites, attend commemorative ceremonies and festivals, watch historically based films, and reconstruct family genealogies. The question is, Why? What are Americans looking for when they engage with the past? And how is it different from what scholars call "history"?
In this book, David Glassberg surveys the shifting boundaries between the personal, public, and professional uses of the past and explores their place in the broader cultural landscape. Each chapter investigates a specific encounter between Americans and their history: the building of a pacifist war memorial in a rural Massachusetts town; the politics behind the creation of a new historical festival in San Francisco; the letters Ken Burns received in response to his film series on the Civil War; the differing perceptions among black and white residents as to what makes an urban neighborhood historic; and the efforts to identify certain places in California as worthy of commemoration. Along the way, Glassberg reflects not only on how Americans understand and use the past, but on the role of professional historians in that enterprise.
Combining the latest research on American memory with insights gained from Glassberg's more than twenty years of personal experience in a variety of public history projects, Sense of History offers stimulating reading for all who care about the future of history in America.

Customer Reviews:
The only Illustrator book I'm willing to buy.......2007-08-14
No offense to Mordy Golding, but this is the only book on Adobe Illustrator I've ever seen that is actually worth the amount of money you pay for it. It's not something I would recommend to a person with reading comprehension issues who'd never touched the pen tool in their lives, but if you learn well through unstructured independent study, it's pretty hard to beat Sharon's work. There aren't any epic tutorials that drag on for pages and pages, so you can either read it cover-to-cover or flip through it randomly until you see something that catches your eye with equal degrees of ease and the text will tell you everything you need to know about what you're looking at. In the very few instances where the words fall short (the section on knockout groups has always felt a little murky to me), the example files serve as ample gap-fillers, allowing you to drill down as deeply as you feel comfortable.
A WOW! of a book.......2007-07-06
The Adobe Illustrator CS2 WOW! Book has been a great resource during my first foray into computer illustration. First of all, as it says on the cover, the "Wow" book contains tips, tricks, and techniques from 100 top Adobe Illustrator artists. But most compellingly for me, it has beautiful examples of a wide variety of artwork printed in full color both in the book, and on the CD which comes with it. The CD has a dimensional advantage by providing access to the "layers" within each illustration, so you can see how the artist created, or "built" the illustration. The "Wow" book also says it is the definitive book on mastering Illustrator, which may give you the impression that is only for the advanced user. However it has a surprising amount of really good Illustrator basics wedged into 400-plus pages. It has an overall summary of what Illustrator is, system requirements, setting up your page, and how to use each tool, along with great exercises for beginners.
The "Wow" book goes on to explain the basics of drawing and coloring, using brushes and symbols, managing and using layers and appearances, working with type, making compound paths and shapes, and finally, using Live Trace (which turns raster images into editable vector paths) and Live Paint (which allows you to paint those vector graphics as if you are painting them by hand). And then, the "Wow" book just rockets off up the steep learning curve of using blends, gradients, transparency, masks, 3D effects, mesh, and beyond, which I admit, I am not anywhere near understanding or managing, much less mastering! But along the way, there are those great illustrations to lead you on and make you want to learn, practice, and become an Illustrator (with a capital "I").
More than I expected!.......2007-04-22
This book is beyond question appropriately titled: Wow! What you get:
1. Full color presentations throughout the 400+ pages of text, from the sample art to the tutorials and other tips.
2. A CD with 542 MB worth of files! That alone is probably worth the price of the book.
3. Detailed, and well thought out, tutorials that will quickly get you up to speed on Bezier curves, keyboard shortcuts, etc.
4. So many examples of truly stunning artwork that the book itself is a work of art!
I have looked at other Illustrator books and quickly devoured the contents which left me wanting more. No doubt this book will take some time to digest, and I will be revisiting many of the examples again and again!
WOW is not so wow........2007-04-11
The reason why i got this book was because i thought it would be the same as the Photoshop WOW book. I was mistaken although a very good book as to what people can do with Illustrator it is not good at explaining it. This book comes with a CD and they put finished artwork on it so people can go through it and see what they did. I think that is garbage, because how m i suppose to understand it. The only good tutorials it gives is for way beginners. The Photoshop WOW book is the best book i ever read for Photoshop. The only reason i give this book 4 is because it is the only one I can find with advanced techniques, but garbage at explaining it. It is like they want to keep it a secret and you have to figure it out on your own.
Not as great as everyone says.......2007-03-18
Great examples, but a limited explanation of how to get them. I need the steps laid out for me. More detail please.

Anita Roddick is one of the worldÂ's most outspoken, controversial, and successful entrepreneurs of the age. Her autobiography, Business As Unusual, charts the story of Roddick and her company The Body Shop through all the highs and lows since 1990. It also examines the parallel growth of vigilante consumerism and predicts how businesses can evolve in this millennium.
Roddick tackles a wide range of personal and political issuesÂfrom self-esteem to human rights abuses associated with globalizationÂand offers her own vision for dealing with the demands of an ethical economy. She proposes that the power of public pressure to create change must never be underestimated and argues that waves of public consciousness are steadily forcing corporations to re-evaluate their actions. By expanding the role and responsibility of the entrepreneur, as well as the definition of business ethics, the corporate world will be compelled to change. In this new edition Roddick brings the story up to date.

An Excellent World History Primer.......2007-09-21
There is no doubt that this series is well written. My son read each of the four books in the span of less than a week. They really piqued his interest. These books will let you know what really turns on your child, but you'll need to go on for further, more in-depth review.
Can't recommend this series enough for the pre-teen set!
Great Homeschool Material for Classical Learning.......2007-09-12
This is a great history curriculm for homeschoolers doing classical education or not. The material is listed very well and very user freindly for the facilitator. Highly recommended.
History for children.......2007-09-04
Was an excellent review. It is designed for parents to read with their children. It provides a good overview of major events in history as well as other information that makes history fun for children, such as recounting folk tales. However, it is a watered-down version of history...it does not go into details about anything in particular so if you are looking for something in depth about something specific, then you need an additional source.
the story of the world.......2007-08-23

Customer Reviews:
I can imagine how difficult it is to write short and good..........2007-05-13
I read about a dozen of books about testing, and I put this one into a reference for my workers. This is short and very robust. My highest rank.
Very good reference for Testing Software.......2006-11-11
This book is very interesting to learn or to progress (I have 10 years of experience in software developpement) in Art of Testing. The only tedious point is that the author are not really integrate the new principales of Test Driven Development in its book. So, I advise to read a book on this subject before or after.
Benoit, a French Programmer ;-)
Updated classic--Inadequate Value for the Money.......2006-06-29
It's hard to give the appropriate number of stars to this edition. On the one hand, this is one of the classics of the field, and deservedly so. In it's first edition, this may have been the first great book on testing, and there is something about the "first great book" on any topic that makes it a lasting value decades later: DeMarco on Structured Analysis, Brooks on the wicked complexity of software project management, Booch on object-oriented design, K&R on C. And so I think it goes with The Art of Software Testing. It's a short book, and full of good ideas that will stay with you.
But.
This revised edition is simply a terrible value. At the full list price, you'd be paying something like fifty cents a page...and, let me tell you, a book had better revolutionize my life for that kind of money. I'm a dedicated capitalist sell-out software developer, but this kind of pricing arouses even _my_ hacker sensibilities. Also, the value of the revision is questionable: there may be a chapter on Extreme Programming, but it seems to me that the best material in this book is still the classic text that survives from the 1st ed. So, my recommendation is that you simply _buy_ the first edition, new or used, at a fraction of the price. Then, you get nearly all of the benefit, plus the cachet of having the "classic" on your shelf. You can put it right next to "The C Programming Language" and "The Mythical Man-Month." Then, your visitors will know you're a serious software developer...and, you know what? They'll probably be right.
I also like and recommend Kaner, Falk and Nguyen, "Testing Computer Software," for a more in-depth and up-to-date treatment of testing issues.
Excellent value for money.......2006-03-15
This book is expensive, however it is well worth its price. A top 10 book for IT professionnals.
The Bible of Software Testing.......2005-09-15
This should be the first book anyone should read about software testing. Having read it, all other books become mostly immaterial. To put it in another way, if there is ONE book you should read about software testing, then this should be the ONE.
