Hardly An In Depth Book.......2005-10-21
It has become fashionable in the last several years to write books about a particular year in sports whether it is baseball, or in this case, football. David Halberstan wrote "October '64", and "Summer of '49", both of which do justice to the subject at hand. Unfortunately, this effort on the Chicago Bears' 1963 championship season is a short read, and certainly not an in depth study of the topic at hand. At times the authors seem to fill in space on matters that have nothing to do with the Bears' season. An example is when we are told about ex Baltimore Colt and Pittsburgh Steeler Eugene "Big Daddy" Lipscomb's death which took place after he was not only out of football, but after the Bears' championship. Short anecdotes are told by various players on a variety of subjects throughout the book and appear to act as a filler. I had a local bookstore order the book for me. If I had a chance to leaf through the book in a bookstore to see the format of comments jumping from one individual to another I probably would have put it back on the shelf. The subject matter of the Bears 1963 season is a worthy subject of a book, but we need someone else to tell the story. This book appears to have been hastily put together.

The Making of the X-Files: Fight the Future brings the reader onto the set and into the studios. If you are not familiar with the intricacies of producing a film, prepare to be boggled by the hectic schedule required to make Fight the Future possible. Combining a past-tense narrative on the various stages of production, with first-person, present-tense journal entries for anecdotal flavor, Duncan offers a dual perspective on the evolution of the movie. Her narrative is punctuated with stills from the film, and behind-the-scenes photographs. The movie's concept illustrations also adorn the pages, and make for interesting backgrounds to the text and photos. Die-hard X-philes will get their dose of trivia, with interesting facts on everything from secrecy protocols to set construction to bee wrangling. While some "making of" books are little more than marketing tie-ins with big movies, Duncan actually tells the story of Fight the Future's "life," from conception to completion, creating a "making of" book with both substance and style. --Brian Patterson

A Must Have to ULTIMATE X Files Fan.......1999-07-04
I didn't know if I would like it when I first bought it, but as soon as I started reading I fell in love with it. I was great, it tells you all the details about the movie, how each scene was shot and the special effects. It also concentrates on every character, not just on Mulder and Scully. I think it is great. If you are a true X Files fan, you have to have it.
Excellent for what it was........1998-11-14
The book was good for what it was. It goes into great depth of how hard it is to make a movie. I thought the book got boring at times. I would recommend this book to the true x-files fan or just anyone who wants to see how a movie is made.

This book was written for everyone....from newbies to real X-files addicts. It takes you to the whole process. A definitive must-read. You'll enjoy it!
This book is exactly what it says it is........1998-07-26
It contains great pictures and sometimes exhaustive details about the making of this feature film. From the concept of the movie to post production work, you get an inside look at all of the planning and hard work involved in getting this film into theaters. If you are interested in the steps involved in movie-making and the X-files in general then this book is for you. It gave me a better appreciation for the movie.

A GREAT BOOK ABOUT THE MOVIE!.......1999-08-05
This book tells you all about the making of the X-filesmovie. It has info about hardships, funny events during shooting, andis overall an informative book. It is great for everybody interested in the X-FILES!
This is the most interesting book I've ever read!.......1999-01-20
Jody Duncan really captures the real aspect of the X-Files. She turned odd words into understandable terms. I myself am an X-Phile, and I'm guessing she is too. I am surprised there is only 1 review so far. Everyone should buy this book.
The X-Files: Behind The Scenes....pick it up!.......1998-06-22
This book is the only behind-the-scenes look at the X-Files. I am a loyal X-Phile and the cover alone is worth the cost. It is Xellent! Filled with photos, snippets of dialogue from the feature film and trivia, this book is Xellent! Jody Duncan is brilliant...my guess is she is a devoted X-Phile herself, as she delivers her thoughts accross to the reader so well. This book also has great facts about the movie, and the pages about the "black oil" is just dessert for any fan of the show or film! This book also explains a lot about the ongoing conspiracy line so far, where the film leads Mulder and Scully to as well as exclusive interviews with Chris Carter [creator], David Duchovny [Fox Mulder], Gillian Anderson [Dana Scully], other old faces from the show as well as newcomers - but it just wouldn't be complete without interviews with the crew who make The X-Files movie what it is. I suggest any movie buff or true X-Phile goes down to their local bookshop and buys this immediately - a must have! Now, here is a sentence from BEHIND THE SCENES: THE X-FILES: FIGHT THE FUTURE FILM "Never forgetting their past, or how precarious their present remains, Agents Mulder and Scully are armed with the truth...and the courage to fight the future."
Book Description
Ringlingville USA is the story of seven brothers who started with next to nothing and became the most famous circus family ever known. This is an extensively illustrated history with many never before published photos. This first history of the Ringling Circus in over fifty years recounts the hard work, business savvy, and entrepreneurship of the Ringling Brothers as they created the largest, most famous circus in the world. Author Jerry Apps presents a comprehensive history of the family business while at the same time recreating the sights and sounds of the circus at the turn of the century.

Customer Reviews:
An important book for anyone interested in American pop culture!.......2005-08-28
Besides teaching the history of popular entertainment at the University of Wisconsin, I'm a writer and historian. There are a lot of circus surveys and shallow Ringling histories out there. No other circus book I've found has been so detailed and pleasant to read as "Ringlingville." It places the brothers in their proper context without being one of those rehashed "life and times" works that are short on content.
Especially interesting is Apps' look at the family's dynamics -- a three ring circus in itself. There's lots of new material here, with locations, dates and the wagon-by-wagon growth of this American icon.
Anyone interested in the Ringlings or American pop culture will find this a fascinating and important book!
An amazing saga of real-life legends.......2004-12-08
Ringlingville USA is the fantastic true story of seven brothers' odyssey from immigrant poverty to immortality as the creators of an enduring circus world. Recently and for the first time, the brothers' financial records and personal correspondence have become available to researchers; Wisconsin and U.S. history specialist Jerry Apps consolidates information from a wide range of sources to offer an unmistakably human portrait of the Ringling Brothers and their personal challenges amid taxation, war, economic pressure, technological advances, and individual tragedy. An amazing saga of real-life legends, illustrated throughout with vintage black-and-white photographs, Ringlingville USA is a must for students of Big Top history and a "must" for all Wisconsin school and community library collections.

Okay book, but too short........2000-08-09
Vortex of Madness is interesting, but weak. It has a bunch of unrelated settings that are tied together with the machine of Lum the Mad. Unfortunately, this seems like a cheap excuse to put a bunch of settings together and publish a book. The settings themselves are interesting, but not really detailed enough. If you like this idea get Well of Worlds instead. Actually, you'd be better of getting The Great Modron March and Dead Gods too, before getting this book.
Good, but could have been better........2000-05-23
This module is actually an excellent module...if you can find some way to fit it into your campaign(which I found quite dificult). It has a good story line but it is difficult to piece together how everything works. If you are planning to start some Planar travel with your PCs then this is a good module to get. If this book was a little more understandable then it would have been five stars.
Complex & absorbing.......2000-03-27
This is a very good book, detailing several sites in the D&D Outer Planes, all linked together (sort of) by an encounter with an ancient artifact, and its famous creator (Baron Lum the Mad no less!). In here you will find a wonderful mechanical demiplane, which had me actually feeling sorry for Tinker gnomes, and a very tragic golem-like creation who is doomed to live there. There is also another richly detailed planar city (somewhere other than Sigil to base campaigns from), set on the Elemental Plane of Water.
While not a Planescape campaign line book, this can be easily used with that campaign. This book is an example of the new way that D&D will be looking at the planes, as part of the core setting, rather than a setting in its own right. Providing they can keep this level of writing, I look forward to many more like this.
As for why it gets 4 stars, well there were a few major editing flaws in my copy, but after contacting WotC, I got sent a replacement for free, in which these had been corrected. Still a few typo's & grammar mistakes that could have been easily spotted & fixed though, but perhaps I am just picky! ;-P

Among network designers and administrators, wired Ethernet is a known quantity. Plenty is known about how to build good twisted-pair network infrastructures, how to keep them secure, and how to monitor their excess capacity. Not so for the wireless Ethernet networks (built around the IEEE 802.11x standards)--these hold much more mystery for even experienced network designers. 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide aims to codify the body of knowledge needed to design and maintain wireless local area networks (LANs). The authors succeed admirably in this, covering what installation and administration teams need to know and digging into information of use to driver writers and others working at lower levels.
The only significant detail that's been excluded has to do with security--a notorious weak point of 802.11x LANs. The authors cover the feeble but widely used Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) authentication protocol in detail and devote another whole chapter to 802.1x, which is an emerging authentication scheme based on Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP). The author has considerable skill in communicating information graphically and does a great job of using graphs to show how communications frequencies shift over time and how conversations among access points and network nodes progress over time. This is indeed an authoritative document. --David Wall
Topics covered: How IEEE 802.11a and 802.11b wireless networks (also known as WiFi networks) work, and how to configure your own. The framing specification is covered well, as are authentication protocols and (in detail) the physical phenomena that affect IEEE 802.11x radio transmissions. There's advice on how to design a wireless network topology, and how to go about network traffic analysis and performance improvement.
Book Description
As we all know by now, wireless networks offer many advantages over fixed (or wired) networks. Foremost on that list is mobility, since going wireless frees you from the tether of an Ethernet cable at a desk. But that's just the tip of the cable-free iceberg. Wireless networks are also more flexible, faster and easier for you to use, and more affordable to deploy and maintain. The de facto standard for wireless networking is the 802.11 protocol, which includes Wi-Fi (the wireless standard known as 802.11b) and its faster cousin, 802.11g. With easy-to-install 802.11 network hardware available everywhere you turn, the choice seems simple, and many people dive into wireless computing with less thought and planning than they'd give to a wired network. But it's wise to be familiar with both the capabilities and risks associated with the 802.11 protocols. And 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition is the perfect place to start. This updated edition covers everything you'll ever need to know about wireless technology. Designed with the system administrator or serious home user in mind, it's a no-nonsense guide for setting up 802.11 on Windows and Linux. Among the wide range of topics covered are discussions on:
- deployment considerations
- network monitoring and performance tuning
- wireless security issues
- how to use and select access points
- network monitoring essentials
- wireless card configuration
- security issues unique to wireless networks
With wireless technology, the advantages to its users are indeed plentiful. Companies no longer have to deal with the hassle and expense of wiring buildings, and households with several computers can avoid fights over who's online. And now, with 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition, you can integrate wireless technology into your current infrastructure with the utmost confidence.
Customer Reviews:
Intersting, fun, and informative.......2007-10-04
This book is based on the hack series from O'Reilly so the book is broken into categorical chapters, each of which cover a wireless networking topic.
There are 7 broad chapters each which average about 12 hacks. The hacks vary greatly from composition and varying according to platform (Windows, Mac, Linux), difficulty, and expertise required. All hacks are covered well with diagrams, examples, explanations, and links for further reading.
One of the best items about the hacks is that they can be done at home to improve modest networks. In fact, most are designed to show a home or SOHO network owner "how to" improve networks of modest means. The chapter on homemade antennas is particuarly interesting. I was inspired to build my own out of duct work sheet metal, masking tape, and a coat hanger after reading "Pringles Can Waveguide" hack. The antenna actually worked which was the best part.
There are 100 hacks covered so everyone will find something of interest. For the most part, each hack is a separate chapter in itself so it is not neccesary to flip back and forth to find information. In general, they are written in instructional prose and are meant to teach you how to accomplish each hack.
Other chapters of interest cover wireless network security (many of which could just be labeled basic network security - wired or wireless), network discovery, and hardware hacks.
There are also 2 appendices covering wireless standards (the 802.1x's) and various hardware components that can be used for do-it-yourselfers.
This book is a very good value for network admins, hobbiests, and those looking to improve home or SOHO wireless networks.
Good overview .......2007-06-28
This is a great book to get started with 802.11 wireless networks. It gives a great overview and a decent amount of detail. For more detail I used open source available on the web, Linux drivers, and a book on 802.11i for more in depth knowledge on security.
Very good, but dated.......2007-05-13
This book is a very detailed and mostly thorough description of 802.11 wireless networking. The author clearly describes the protocols and how they are typically used, plus various wireless network topologies, and even information about deployment such as antenna types.
Where the book falls short is that it was clearly written before the growth in popularity of "wireless controllers" or "wireless switches", and the auther says almost nothing about them or how wireless networking works when using a wireless-controller-based network.
There also was not much information about wireless network management, although that might be beyond the scope of this book.
Excellent book.......2007-04-15
I've been looking for a book that discusses 802.11 technical details but that is easier to follow than the standards themselves. I've been very happy with this book, as it has helped me find the answers I was looking for. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I wish it had a few more sections that walked through sequences of actions (such as association and re-association). The information is there, but is sometimes scattered, so you have to pull together from different parts of the book and mentally reassemble. Othewise, it's very well written and I recommend it to anyone who needs a good working reference book for 802.11 operations.
\_/\_/ .......2007-02-21
The books in not very complete in what it teaches you. It is fine for beginners, but does not meet the needs of advanced users.

Much like the Delany sisters of Brooklyn, Constance Baker Motley was one of the first black women to overcome the barriers of race and sex to become a leading figure in her field of expertise. In the mid '60s, Motley became the first black female senator, the first black woman elected to the office of Manhattan borough president, and the first woman appointed to the federal bench. Now a senior judge in a U.S. District Court of New York, Motley looks back on a lifetime of unprecedented achievements and gives personal testimony to some of the greatest moments in the civil rights movement in her autobiography, Equal Justice Under Law. Her story is an impressive one: she dramatically recounts sitting on-stage with her son as Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech and recalls the traumatic times in Mississippi that led to the murder of her colleague and friend, Medgar Evers. She served on the NAACP's Legal Defense and Education Fund, fought alongside Thurgood Marshall in Brown v. Board of Education, and made 10 other appearances before the Supreme Court. Fascinating as Motley's life has been, those with some prior knowledge of civil rights may fare best with this book, considering its weighted language and complex prose--an expected caveat, considering the author has spent her life steeped in the language of law.
Book Description
This wise and affecting memoir is the inside story of the great efforts leading up to the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 and the fight to implement it-and its implications for affirmative action and black poverty today.
A black woman who moved in the corridors of power in the middle of this century, Constance Baker Motley has been a pioneer in both black civil rights and women's rights. As the key attorney assisting Thurgood Marshall at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, she argued a dozen cases before the Supreme Court (winning all but one), and her representation of James Meredith in his bid to enroll in the University of Mississippi made her famous. Subsequently, as Manhattan borough president and a U.S. district court judge, she has fulfilled the highest aspirations of our legal and political system.
This book, the most detailed account to date of the legal conflicts of the civil rights movement, is also an account of Motley's struggle, as a black woman, to succeed, a record of a life lived with great courage and responsibility.
Customer Reviews:
Inspirational personal history by American Legal Icon.......1998-11-21
The book was best when the Judge provides her perspective on events and personalities known to most of us only through news accounts. I enjoyed the book which was a quick read and left me hoping Judge Motely would write another book with greater detail of some of the very interesting episodes in her career. The author's career is remarkable and tracks the major events of the civil rights movement through the eyes of a women who appears to be uneasy with the role model label. I had been looking for a book on Judge Motely after reading several books concerning the civil rights movement. It is remarkable that Judge Motely has not been the subject of biographers. Her story is unique. The book would be useful for lawyers, legal buffs and those searching for true role models. It avoids legalease and is written in a manner which made it a very easy read.

Book Description
In this classic portrait of Jews in the South, Eli N. Evans takes readers inside the nexus of southern and Jewish histories, from the earliest immigrants to the present day. Evoking the rhythms and heartbeat of Jewish life in the Bible belt, Evans weaves together chapters of recollections from his youth and early years in North Carolina with chapters that explore the experiences of Jews in cities and small towns across the South. He presents the stories of communities, individuals, and events in this quintessential American landscape that reveal the deeply intertwined strands of what he calls a unique "Southern Jewish consciousness."
First published in 1973 and updated in 1997, The Provincials was the first book to take readers on a journey into the soul of the Jewish South, using autobiography, storytelling, and interpretive history to create a complete portrait of Jewish contributions to the history of the region. No other book on this subject combines elements of both memoir and history in such a compelling way. This new edition includes a gallery of more than two dozen family and historical photographs as well as a new introduction by the author.
Customer Reviews:
Evans should update his book! The South is no longer 'Fiddler on the Roof'!.......2005-07-03
I am a Jew living in a college town in Mississippi for the past 5 years. I was born & raised in the North. I think Evans should rename his book "Fiddler on the Roof in the South". His book is a very nostalgic look back at Jewish history - as it was in the past here. It's very much: the southern Jews were all so happy, they all fit in and were accepted, etc. He does cite a few instances where they had problems - but these usually involved us 'Yankee Jews', like the instances when a few (Yankee)Rabbis in the South fought for civil rights.
Evans should realize that times have REALLY CHANGED HERE! The evangelical Christians in my town (which is most people here) harrass me like crazy - 'I am praying for you!' 'Have you read the words of Jesus, who was a Jew like you?' 'When will you come to my Church'. Blah, blah, blah. Thank God for the minority of Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians and a few others who live here. They are the only ones to accept me for the way I am, and the way I will stay - a Jew.
I want all who are reading this to realize that I am only speaking for my experience. Jews who reside in cities in the South have told me that they have had far better experiences, and that they cannot relate to what I am saying.
But I do want to ask Evans a few questions:
1) If things are so great for the Jews in the South: Why have you lived in New York for decades now???
2) Why don't you at least write either a new Forward to the book, a magazine article, etc., contrasting some of the ways in which the lives of Jews in the South have changed over time (for some of us at least), primarily due to the rise of the evangelical Christians?
I read Evans' books before I moved here, and nothing much he describes in his books is my life here. For a Jew who really cares about her/his religion living here is depressing; it is practically Jew-less; and, at best, the majority of a certain denomination of Christians here ignore me. (By the way, I am planning to move to a city!)
By the way, don't bother writing to me to tell me that I am "wrong", or to invite me to things like the Bible Study at your Church. Believe me, with all the praying for me that is going on in this town, and all the myriad attempts to convert me, if it hasn't happened by now, as they say in these parts, it just ain't gonna happen!
A great book about the Jewish South!.......2003-06-08
"The Provincials" proved to be especially meaningful to me. First, my wife gave it to me for our anniversary; I am researching the Jewish Confederacy, and I had included it on my reading list. Second, we went to Vicksburg, Miss., for our anniversary, and I began reading the book there. I have family roots in Vicksburg, where we met a number of wonderful people at the synagogue who knew my cousin, a World War II veteran who grew up in Vicksburg but now lives in Texas.
My wife and I also toured the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience in Utica, which is very close to Vicksburg.
Putting everything together, including our visit to the Jewish cemetery in Vicksburg, I feel I now understand "the Southern Jewish experience." Eli Evans tied a lot of loose ends for me and helped put a lot of things in perspective. (I plan to view "Driving Miss Daisy" again, this time with new appreciation and understanding.)
And I might add, I found this book very easy to read. Since I'm generally reading two or three books at the same time (well, you know what I mean), I had planned to spend three weeks reading "The Provincials." I finished it in a week and was sorry when it was over.
One of the worst books I ever read.......2001-06-19
I was very interested in reading this book due to it's title, but as the saying goes, "never judge a book by it's "title"". I found the author to be arrogant, bregadocious and totally prejudiced against anything not of the "democratic" persuasion. In addition I dont think he stayed on the subject matter, but rather used this book to expound his biased views.
An interesting look at Southern Jewish culture........2001-06-01
I share many of Bonita Davis's good feelings about this book. It is a great collection of stories about Jews throughout the South and throughout much of American history. I particularly enjoyed the insights into the schism between the early-arrived German Jews and the later-arrived Eastern European Jews. In any case, the book is well written, but not as easy to read as his Judah P. Benjamin biography.
Southern, Jewish and Proud of It.......2000-01-04
To say that you are a southern Jew may sound like a contradiction in terms. After all, Jewish culture and life is demoniated by the historic enclaves of the urban north. Eli Evans' book, The Provencials breaks that stereotype by telling the story of the south's Jewish population whose very presence made an impact on a region that is so misunderstood by its northern cousins. Evans describes for us the challenges and triumphs of growing up Jewish in a southern culture. Like their southern gentile counterparts Jews in the south share a deep rooted southern soul and culture which embeds itself into one's psyche. Although the south harbors within it painful memories for Jews ( Leo Frank lynching of 1915), overall the community managed to survive and thrive. Jewish communities in many instances took on the same cultural charistics of the southern gentile but there was always that sense of being the outsider that made the community a distinct entity. Evans skillfully weaves his own autobiography of growing up Jewish in the Bible Belt with the stories of the regions' people and various events that impacted upon the Jewish community. I throughly enjoyed reading about the peddlers who went throughout the rural south bringing with them not only merchandise but news from the larger communities. The book shows the struggles Jews had in building communities, establishing synagogues, and balancing the racial tensions of the majority culture. This book is a must read for those unfamiliar with the Jewish presence in the south.

Helpful Guide to Ethical Questions in Research.......2005-10-26
The book was brief, to the point and helpful in explaining some of the contemporary ethical questions involved in writing a research article or paper, especially when co-authors are involved. It could be used as a textbook for a class because each section included ethical questions for debate.
A valuable resource . . ........2000-04-01
This well-written primer grounds both neophyte and experienced scientist in the culture of Western science as it is today. It explores such topics as values in science, conflicts of interest, assigning of credit, and authorship conventions, meanwhile managing to shed useful light on a whole range of other topics. I would recommend this book to any scientist, science student, or person interested in pursuing the sciences. "On Being a Scientist" fosters interest in the sciences and builds a foundation upon which to become a more informed, responsible, and productive researcher. Additionally, this text could benefit educators, policy-makers, and nonscientists by giving them a window into the pressures and experiences associated with life in the scientific realm.
Without being discouraging or unrealistically sanguine, this concise document lays out the conventions, factors, and shifts of perspective that scientists today need to know about both regarding behavioral expectations within the disciplines and the roles of science and scientist in the public domain. Subtler points of a largely unspoken scientific etiquette are also elaborated, and knowledge of these conventions and expectations can go a long way toward preventing harmful mistakes of omission, misunderstandings, and hard feelings among scientists, colleagues, and student researchers.
Ethically challenging case studies at the end of each section stimulate reflection and discussion on ethical decisions that can be especially fruitful in science or ethics of science courses. In relatively few pages, this book plants a broad spread of ideas and perspectives in the developing scientists' mind. Accounts of scientists' responses to potentially awkward or unethical situations are helpful and extend the range of possible approaches today's scientists might take given similar dilemmas (i.e. credit for pulsars).
Traditional ideas and newer ones meld together for clear, often insightful outcomes. For example, an early chapter plainly states: "Citations are part of the reward system of science." That fact and the importance of reputation have long been a reality in scientific circles. On the other end of the spectrum, one the closing chapters alludes to the limits of science in forming public policies: "But science offers only one window on human experience. While upholding the honor of their profession, scientists must seek to avoid putting scientific knowledge on a pedestal above knowledge obtained through other means." This is definitely a view that has only more recently been acknowledged. Kudos to the National Academy of Sciences for an effective, well-rounded essay on science, scientists, and responsible conduct!
