+1/2 -- Fascinating subject in need of a stronger co-writer.......2003-02-27
It's difficult to blame Bowen for the hodge-podge nature of this book - after all, he was busy living this life, rather than thinking about and analyzing it. And with a personality as strong as his, it's difficult to lay too much blame at the feet of co-writer Jerome, either. The result of their collaboration is an interesting set of anecdotes that sketch Bowen's character (you get the sense that the writing voice is largely accurate), with occasional flashes of insight, but very little real depth.
Bowen's life in music has been an unusually rich one. Having started out as an early rock 'n' roll musician (with Buddy Knox and the Rhythm Orchids), progressing through a career in the music industry that included reviving the careers of Dean Martin (Bowen produced "Everybody Loves Somebody") and Frank Sinatra (Bowen produced "Strangers in the Night"), and a string of successful engagements as a record company executive in Nashville, Bowen's path crossed that of numerous fascinating characters. There's an interesting story about each, but they often fail to reveal much about the acquaintance, Bowen or their relationship.
Bowen's post-Reprise years led him through early work with soon-to-be luminaries Don Henley and Glen Frey, but the book has surprisingly little to say about their music. His tenure at MGM provides an interesting anecdote about drop-shipping around the label's regular distribution system, but fails to discuss why. Again, interesting stories, but not particularly revealing.
The book really doesn't take off until Bowen arrives in Nashville. Here there are interesting insights on Bowen's studio work, his view on musicians (including an enlightening discussion of stage versus studio players), his effort to drive Nashville to digital recording, and his philosophy about constructing an album as a 40-minute performance.
Bowen concludes with a nicely detailed view of Garth Brooks' rise to 400-pound-gorilla status. While there are certainly other sides to the story, Bowen's rings with a lot of truth - most especially his description of how Brooks' contract demands crippled Capitol/Liberty as a label.
This is a good read, but given Bowen's life, it should have been a great read.
Not great lit., but a wealth of well-told music biz tales.......1997-05-07
Usually when you read an "autobiography" of a Nashville musician, you just know the co-author really wrote it and let the star put his or her name at the top. This book sounds just like Bowen would sound if he were chatting with you over coffee. It's filled with great insider trivia about everyone from Little Richard to Sinatra to Garth Brooks (and, yes, that's steam coming out from under Garth's big hat). The word "unapologetic" in the title should be taken literally. Bowen gives us the often-outrageous, sometimes-ugly, unvarnished truth about himself and about the star's who've crossed his path

Typical Paolini excellence.......2007-05-07
I love this book. I bought it for my kids to give me for Mother's Day. I'm a handspinner and just love this story about Charlie the shepherd who needs a new cloak. He goes through all the steps from shearing his sheep to sewing the finished fabric together into a new cloak. It has great humor and is a fun read.
Superb preschool book!.......2006-12-23
I enjoy dePaola's books very much, but this one I am extra enthusiastic about. I work in a classroom of 3,4 and 5 year olds, and I am responsible for selecting literature for, and reading to, the younger children in the class. Sometimes when I am reading a dePaola book I have to cut some of the narrative to keep their attention. I don't have to do that at all with this book. This is a book that will keep the 3 year old's attention and still offer something to the older children as well. A lot of the charm of this story is the pictures which feature the action outlined in the text as to what Charlie is doing and also clearly represents the agendas of a spunky sheep and craftly mouse. YOung children love to discover these little "surprises" within the illustrations.
Charlie Needs a Cloak.......2006-07-13
Tomie dePaola always writes such good books, that I don't worry if it will be good, I know it will be. I will be using this book to help with a yarn/fiber art unit in class. I have enjoyed reading it and I know my students will like it too.
Great for teaching sequencing...........2005-11-02
While I am a pre-service teacher, the second grade classroom that I am observing is currently working with _Charlie Needs a Cloak_and sequencing. The students are given the prompt of each of Charlie's actions on 'wool' pieces and then the students write 2-3 complete sentences using various punctuation. Also, there is a story within a story, which students (at least these 12 second graders) showed enthusiasm with prediction and sequencing. The story within a story format is one big reason why I am a fan of this book!
from white fleece to red cloak.......2005-06-16
Though it's rated at the pre-school level, I've found Charlie Needs a Cloak to be useful and entertaining for kids up to third grade. In my work as a museum educator, this delightful tale serves as a valuable intro to the world of pre-industrial textile production, especially in colonial America. The illustrations are humorous, which dePaola is famous for. Charlie needs a new cloak, and he takes the reader through the process of making one, from shearing his whimsical sheep, who help him with his work, to weaving, dyeing, and sewing the new garment. Too bad Charlie doesn't notice, as soon as he puts it on, that his favorite sheep is already chewing on his hem!

Book Description
From the late 1960s on, there has been one highly profitable movie genre that has received little or no critical attention or documentation-black action pictures. These are very popular, slam-bang, heavy-duty, ethnic action feature films like Beverly Hills Cop, Blacula, Cleopatra Jones, Foxy Brown, Greased Lightning, Shaft, and Superfly. Here the genre is given its due in this comprehensive compilation of four filmmaking decades. For each of the 235 films, there are detailed filmographic data and full cast and credits listings, plus an essay interweaving a synopsis, contemporary critical quotes, production information, and an analysis of the film and its stars.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive but rife with inaccuracies and extraneous entries.......2007-09-13
Black Action Films is a fairly good addition to your library if you're into niche films--it does cover a genre of film that has gotten little serious attention anywhere else. Unfortunately this book suffers from the same two ills that virtually all the McFarland library bound reference books do--it costs way the hell too much and it is very poorly edited. The main thing that irritated me about this one was that the author included entries on films that simply were not black action films. He includes films that are not action films simply because they have a black star or supporting player and also includes action films that feature minor roles by black actors in otherwise white-dominated films. For instance he includes the Dudley Moore comedy "Best Defense" just because Eddie Murphy had a small role in it and 1987's "The Principal" starring James Belushi simply because Louis Gossett Jr has a supporting role. This is just a matter of filling pages to fill pages.
Also, there are some blatant inaccuracies that are just stupid. In his entry on Issac Hayes' "Truck Turner" for instance, the author repeatedly referrs to the character as "Matt" Truck Turner. The characters name was MACK "Truck" Turner. "Mack Truck"--get it? I mean that's a joke in the film, which the book's author obviously never saw and the book's editor obviously never checked.
And for this they want $60 a copy? For $20 it'd be worth it. I'd rate it at 2 1/2 stars if I could.

the best journal in the world.......2003-02-10
This journal is great. I have tried and tried to keep a journal, but I can never keep one going, you know I'll do it for a few weeks or months, then I get tired of it and stop...It always seems to get boring or somehthing. Well, this journal has been completely different. I hav been doing it for quite a while, and not gotten bored. It keeps you interested with little words on each page, like little insights and stuff, I love the way it's bound like a book on the side and not like a spiral notebook, and it's very girly with its pretty pink...the outside look is very attractive and cute and really caught my eye, I actually bought mine at Border's bookstore, and I was looking at the journals I saw this one, flipped through andd went straight over to buy it. Simplyshe did a great job with this one. This cute little book even fits in my purse! I love it, and it really was a great purchase for me. Studies even show that keeping a diary or journal can increase your social life, and keep you from being depressed. This is a great journal and I highly recommend it.
It's all about me!.......2003-01-31
I have several of the SimplyShe products, and I believe all women should have at least one. The journal is salted with small uplifting witty remarks (e.g. "You are hipper than you think".) No matter your age or relationship status this is a good journal. It's easy to write in and can even fit in your purse. Perfect for grrl power.
Your new best friend wrapped up in a book..........2002-12-18
This girly journal is perfect. Of course, it is a journal, but it's like a little mini-support group for the journal's writer. It's colorful and cute, which makes it a joy to write in. But then each page has little captions (that speak only to women) like "I'm bloated. How bout you." or "You're so hot. There, now do you feel better." and (my personal favorite) "You're not alone. I don't like your boyfriend, either."
The purpose of most journals is to allow the writer to vent... about whatever. And believe it or not, this journal makes you feel comfortable about complaining about everything... even issues you feel absolutely alone on. And more importantly, it makes you laugh at times when you really need it.
colorful fun journal!.......2002-08-15
This journal gives the small insights we gain from life and relationships in a humorous way through short quips amongst the journal's pages. Its very funny, and a great space to truly express your inner thoughts. All the pages are colorful and uniquely designed. I love it!

Customer Reviews:
Quickbooks doesn't NEED its own manual..use this one!.......2007-09-24
I am not a professional reviewer, but I needed to comment on the value of this book. I just started my own business and am lost in software land. I heard Quickbooks was the way to go, so, I followed suit and purchased it. Upon recommendation, I took part in the "online tutorials". It helped me learn a few things. "What next?", I inquired. "Use the help menu", was the catty reply. Forget that...I went searching for and found this book. Immediately, I found what I was looking for..Explainations! Examples! Education! Horray! Thank God I found the Missing Manual...
Effective material.......2007-07-11
I haven't read the book from cover to cover, but instead by using the index and table of contents to find what I am looking for. The book is well laid out and does a very good job of covering the key components of the QuickBooks system.
It's a little more comprehensive that many other books, but that is what I wanted so its a good choice.
Very Good for nubies.......2006-11-03
Very good book for those just starting out. It goes over the basics of setting up.
I've worked with QB for 7+ years and thought the book was about shortcuts and secrets and workarounds, so I was dissapointed in my choice. My part time assistant finds it invaluable.
Great book for the non-beancounter.......2006-08-28
This is an excellent book to help you through the tough spots of Quickbooks Pro 2006. Since I am not an Accountant but have used Quicken for many years I am a dedicated Intuit customer (wouldn't touch MS Money for anything). Quickbooks is an excellent product but the learning curve is extensive. However, between "QuickBooks 2006 (Missing Manual)" and "Tax Loopholes for eBay Sellers" by Diane Kennedy I am attacking and winning with Quickbooks
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-07-05
Do you want to take control of your company's financial future? If you do, then this book is for you! Author Bonnie Biafore, has done an outstanding job of writing a practical manual that provides you with step-by-step instructions for using every QuickBooks Pro feature.
Biafore, begins by explaining how to create and manage a company file; create accounts, customers, jobs, invoice items, and other lists; and configure preferences. Then, the author describes how to bill customers, manage the money that your customers owe you, pay for expenses, run payroll, manage your bank accounts, and perform other bookkeeping tasks. She also explains how to keep your inventory at just the right level, how to keep track of time and mileage, how to build budgets and plan for the future, and how to use QuickBooks reports to evaluate every aspect of your enterprise. Finally, she helps you take your copy of QuickBooks to the next level.
In this most excellent book, the author shows you how to save time and prevent errors by downloading transactions electronically. More importantly, this book helps you set up QuickBooks so your financial data is secure.

Don't go confusing your Thomas Cranmer with your Thomas More; now there is a Tudor faux-pas if ever there was one. Cranmer made the divorce happen, More lost his head over it. Cranmer wrote the Book of Common Prayer, More was the author of Utopia. And it was More who was canonized a saint, while Cranmer was executed by "Bloody" Mary Tudor for his fiendish plotting on behalf of Lady Jane Grey as well as for his embracing an evangelical brand of Protestantism the Catholic queen found wholly disagreeable. In this highly readable biography, we get the first new treatment of Cranmer in three decades, bolstered by recent scholarship and new sources. Think this stuff is remote? Cranmer, as Archbishop of Canterbury, crafted two editions of the English Book of Common Prayer. The success of this book had an enormous impact on the English language, loading terms with meaning and influencing the rhetoric of power for the next two centuries.
Book Description
This prizewinning biography provides the definitive account of Thomas Cranmer, archbishop of Canterbury, architect of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, King Henry VIII`s guide through three divorces, and ultimately a martyr for his Protestant faith. English Reformation scholar Diarmaid MacCulloch draws on new manuscript sources in Britain and elsewhere to create this vivid new study-the first on Cranmer in over thirty years.
Customer Reviews:
The Jury is still out.......2007-06-15
I have'nt finished this book but as you've asked me I respond. The book is heavy going, but probably no one will ever do better owing to the subject i.e Cranmer's deeds are known in all their inconsistancies in the earlier years, but nothing is known of the personal reasonings that gave rise to them.
Even the glories of his style of writing just seemed to come from nowhere, but the Author does a good job in explaining its inimitableness
A Worthwhile and Eye Opening Adventure.......2006-05-23
I took "Thomas Cranmer" on in order to make sense of a seeming paradox: What I already "knew" of him did not square with the theology I had begun to discover in his Collects and Prayer Book. I was curious!
MacCulloch does a masterful job at presenting this complex, and sometimes contradictory figure of the early English Reformation. Despite the derrogatory review given by "a reader," I found very little bias and no axe-grinding in this work. Actually, I came to the book expecting some bias. Even being thusly prepared and properly skeptical, I found only a very few times that MacCulloch let his own opinions show through. (When he does, it is in parentheses with exclamation points!!) You can almost hear him chuckle at times.
I read the book in 9 or 10 days, and never found it to be a chore; in fact, the most difficult thing was putting it down and going to bed! While the book is scholarly, and masterfully written, it is definitely not tedious or boring.
I came to the end of the book with a deep respect for Cranmer. I have many points of disagreement with him, and yet a certain admiration for his eventual willingness to heroically stand where he believed the Gospel compelled him to stand. Fr. James DeKoven, an early Anglican theological hero in Wisconsin, once said "We live at a time when cowardice in matters of religion has been elevated to the status of virtue." Archbishop Thomas Cranmer proved, in the end, to be anything but a coward.
I have corresponded several times now with Professor MacCulloch, and find him to be humble, dedicated, and helpful. I am now reading his "The Reformation: a history," and I plan to read everything else of his that I can get my hands on!
A masterful biography.......2005-06-10
Many Anglican history books have an axe to grind. But not this masterful biography. The Thomas Cranmer of MacCulloch is very human, but no villian nor an unblemished hero.
We see his theological evolution from a fairly orthodox Catholic to a stauch Protestant who went to the stake in defiance of Bloody Mary and the "Antichrist" Pope.
MacCulloch also takes the reader into the historical sources and their reliability. These, along with his extensive footnotes will be of interest to any serious student of Anglican history.
Yet this longish book is very readable and rarely gets bogged down, again unlike some other Anglican histories.
If you want to learn about Thomas Cranmer or about early Anglicanism, this book is a must read.
Mark Marshall is the author of God Knows What It's Like to be a Teenager.
Flawed Saint of the Church.......2003-11-05
MacCulloch's book provides access to the singularly foundational figure of the reformation in England. Most who recognize Cranmer's name at all know him only as the author of the first Prayer Book or the man who attained Henry VIII's annulment from Catherine. MacCullogh gives depth to Cranmer as a flawed yet faithful agent of the Church, one who sought with conviction the reformation of the Church of England but was also willing to slavishly follow his prince in order to achieve that reformation. The final chapter, chronicling Cranmer's fall and ultimate martyrdom, reads with the pace of a good novel. For Episcopalians and others with an affinity for the Anglican tradition, insight into Cranmer's life and thought is crucial, and MacCulloch presents that insight with skill.
Misleading information on Cranmer's theology--rubbish........2001-11-16
MacCulloch seeks to present Archbishop Cranmer as a radical protestant with little scholarly interest or knowledge of the early church, and also that the "via media" of Anglicanism that resulted from the English Reformation was contrary to Cranmer's radical protestant beliefs and is a "myth." While MacCulloch may have written a biography he failed to examine the source of Cranmer's beliefs and theology. MacCulloch claims that Cranmer's eucharistic theology stems from the Swiss Reformed tradition: one had only to read Basil Hall's essay in "Thomas Cranmer: Churchman and Scholar" edited by Ayris and Selwyn to see that this is demonstrably false. Cranmer was heavily influenced by Lutheranism as well as by the "exposition of the most holy and learned fathers and martyrs" of "the holy catholic church of Christ from the beginning" (Cranmer's words) and as such his theology clearly stands in the same line as that of Richard Hooker and Lancelot Andrewes. This sort of "scholarship" with an obvious ax to grind is perhaps the worst sort. If you want to know Cranmer's views on the Sacraments (as most Anglicans or scholars of the Reformation do) please read him in his own words in "A Defense of the True and Catholic Doctrine of the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ" (if you can find a copy in the library) or in "Thomas Cranmer: Churchman and Scholar."

Book Description
Here are two dozen tales in the grand adventure of engineering from the Henry Petroski, who has been called America’s poet laureate of technology.
Pushing the Limits celebrates some of the largest things we have created–bridges, dams, buildings--and provides a startling new vision of engineering’s past, its present, and its future. Along the way it highlights our greatest successes, like London’s Tower Bridge; our most ambitious projects, like China’s Three Gorges Dam; our most embarrassing moments, like the wobbly Millennium Bridge in London; and our greatest failures, like the collapse of the twin towers on September 11. Throughout, Petroski provides fascinating and provocative insights into the world of technology with his trademark erudition and enthusiasm for the subject.

I have been reading Dr Petroski's books for a long time. I was particularly struck by the study of the Texas A&M Bonfire collapse. I was impressed that he went beyond the "nuts and bolts" of physicial studies of materials and failure analysis. The comments on psychological factors was insightful and engaging.
Highly recommended
Tells stories of daring enterprises .......2004-11-06
In the push for longer bridges, taller buildings and larger-scale projects of all sizes, engineers face new challenges which go beyond physics to tackle the aesthetics and functionality of engineering itself. Henry Petroski's PUSHING THE LIMITS tells stories of daring enterprizes which envisioned engineering achievements beyond ordinary measure; from Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Bridge to China's Three Gorges Dam project. His isn't just a celebration of technological achievement either: PUSHING THE LIMITS also examines the underlying costs and problems of such projects, focusing on both design and human challenges in the process.
Engineering Successes and Failures.......2004-11-04
It's pretty clear that Mr. Petroski likes bridges. I do to. In fact I just recently drove many miles out of my way to go see the new Sundial bridge designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava in Redding, California. My one complaint here would be that I'd sure like to have seen more pictures. His words are elequent, his descriptions great, but remember the bit about picture and a thousand words.
Bridges take up about half the book. then he goes on to describe an eclectic collection of engineering projects that don't quite fit together but which make nice little essays of their own.
Interesting enough, a couple of his essays cover engineering projects that failed. In his interestingly named Vanities of the Bonfire, he gives an engineering report of the collapse of the stack of logs that made up the 1999 bonfire at Texas A&M. It would be very amusing except that it killed a dozen people and injured several more. Consistent with todays law suit environment, it is now estimated that a new bonfire would cost between one and one and a half million dollars.
Mostly Bridges.......2004-09-24
This book is a worthwhile addition to Petroski's accounts of adventures in engineering. His many essays on the possibilities of gutsy achievement in large scale engineering is leavened by cautionary tales of overconfidence and hubris. His stories are especially enlivened by his lacing some of his personal experiences with encountering the structures with erudite discussions of the technical challenges faced by the engineers and sometimes lyrical peans to the beauty of the artifacts they had created.
I especially appreciated his chapter on his visit to the Three Gorges--a place I hope to visit soon. And the one about London's Millennium Bridge and the Wheel was tops too.
On the other hand, it is apparent that the book is rather unevenly done. It is a collection of essays that do not tie together very well. The chapter on fuel cells near the end of the book seems quite out of place and pedantic to boot. And while the book has 28 illustrations, most of them are pretty cheesy--it really needs more and better pictures.
But overall, I enjoyed the book and I'll be using it to enhance my visits to some of the same places that he describes so well.
