Book Description
Mel Brooks is often regarded as one of Hollywood's funniest men, thanks to such highly successful films as The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein. Both critics and fans have, however, noticed that his films have a tendency to turn out much like the jokes that comprise themhit-or-miss, one minute shoot-the-moon brilliant and the next minute well short of laughs.
This work is devoted entirely to Mel Brooks' work, good and bad, as a writer and director of big screen comedies. It provides a thorough synopsis and thematic analysis for each of his twelve films: The Producers (1968), The Twelve Chairs (1970), Blazing Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Silent Movie (1976), High Anxiety (1977), History of the WorldPart 1 (1981), To Be or Not to Be (1983), Spaceballs (1987), Life Stinks (1991), Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), and Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995). The analyses include consideration of each film in relation to his other films to find common themes. Complete cast and production credits are provided for each film.

Book Description
A beautifully illustrated portrait of Beat icons Jack Kerouac, Gary Snyder, and Philip Whalen and the years in the Cascades high country that shaped their lives and work.
This is John Suiter's first book, and it evolved from a magazine assignment that took him to Jack Kerouac's remote fire lookout on Desolation Peak on the fortieth anniversary of the publication of The Dharma Bums. For two weeks in the summer of 1995, Suiter-an East Coast city-dweller all his life-lived in Kerouac's still-standing fire lookout, making photographs for his magazine project. Meanwhile, the awesome beauty and profound solitude of the surrounding North Cascades worked their magic-as it had for Kerouac and countless others since.
In 1996, Suiter met the poets Gary Snyder and Philip Whalen, who had also worked as fire lookouts on peaks in the North Cascades in the 1950s. It had been Snyder-the real-life model for Kerouac's fictive "Japhy Ryder"-who had first come into the Upper Skagit country as a fire lookout in 1952 and blazed the way for Whalen and Kerouac to follow. Suiter returned to the North Cascades during the next few summers for further shooting-hikes on Crater, Sourdough, and Sauk mountains. Illustrated with thirty-five beautiful photographs, Poets on the Peaks tells how the solitary mountain adventures of three young men helped to form the literary, spiritual, and environmental values of a generation.
Based on scores of previously unpublished letters and journals, plus recent interviews with Snyder and Whalen and several others, Poets on the Peaks creates a group portrait of Kerouac, Snyder, and Whalen that transcends the tired urban clichés of the "Beat" life. Poets on the Peaks is about the development of a community of poets, including the famous Six Gallery reading of October 1955, and contains unexpected cameos by fellow poets and mountain-climbers Allen Ginsberg, Kenneth Rexroth, Philip Lamantia, and Michael McClure. Poets on the Peaks is also a book about Dharma and the years of Dharma Bums--from the 1951 roadside revelation in the Nevada desert that led Gary Snyder to drop out of academia and head for Japan, to Kerouac's lonely vigil with The Diamond Sutra on Desolation Peak, to Philip Whalen's ordination as a Zen priest. Finally, Poets on the Peaks is the story of the birth of a wilderness ethic, as well as a photographic homage to the Cascades landscape, a landscape virtually unchanged since these men journeyed there thanks to the environmental protections they helped inspire.

The sources of "The Dharma Bums" & more.......2007-04-11
This is the perfect companion to Jack Kerouac's classic novel, offering a wealth of information, fascinating stories, and gorgeous photographs about the world chronicled in that novel's pages. But it offers so much more -- a richer understanding of Gary Snyder & Philip Whalen, as well as their poetic work, and an in-depth look at the times & experiences that shaped all three writers. There are countless books about the Beats, many of them quite good indeed ... but this is surely one of the best. The author truly knows & loves his subjects, without being blinded by any need for glossy hagiography. It's as honest a book as you'll find about these three remarkable men & their times. A very enthusiastic recommendation!
Beat Beginnings:The right place at the right time..........2003-11-10
John Suiter's work on the founding fathers of Beat poetry and prose is a marvelous read. Suiter takes us along the trail through post war America and ties together the Beat poets, Jack Kerouac, McCarthyism, San Francisco and the North Cascades Forest Service Fire Lookout system of the 1950's. Imagine the poet/Zen Buddhist Gary Snyder being blacklisted from working for the Forest Service! Do you want to know how Jack Kerouac got the idea for his Dharma Bums work? What was it like spending a month and a half completely alone on top of a mountain in the Pacific Northwest, looking for the telltale smoke of a developing forest fire? Do you know what a "lightning stool" is, what you do with it and would you like to see a photograph of one? What was it like being at the famous Six Gallery poetry reading in 1955 when Allen Ginsberg first read "Howl"? If these questions interest you, or if you want to know about the origins of Beat writings-this is the book to get. Author Suiter launches the reader away through Old Mexico to visit with young Robert Mitchum as Christ in a glass coffin and William "Junky" Burroughs, up through Yosemite to camp with Kerouac and Snyder, a stop in San Francisco at City Lights Bookstore and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and finally Japan and Hozomeen, and the Void from Desolation. A delightful Masterpiece of fact and photographs!
Covers beautiful Cascade Mountain scenes and peaks.......2002-11-07
Writer-photographer Suiter provides a literary portrait of Beat era poets Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, and Jack Kerouac in Poets On The Peaks, which centers around their early experiences as fire lookouts in the 1950s. As such, Poets On The Peaks provides a hard book to easily categorize: it covers beautiful Cascade Mountain scenes and peaks, fire lookouts, and literature and biography alike. The writings of these three juxtapose nicely with the photos and images, making this a recommended gift choice for the holiday season.
Significant contribution to literature on early Beats.......2002-11-01
In his first book, John Suiter has produced a work that contributes significantly to the literature on early development of the Beat literary movement and to understanding the disparate characters of Snyder, Whalen, and Kerouac. Using the common experience of all three men serving as fire lookouts in the Northern Cascades in the early to mid 1950's, the author evokes portraits of how each writer was influenced by wilderness and the isolation of a fire lookout, and how each used the experience in his work. Drawing from recent interviews with Snyder and Whalen and others who knew them during the early 1950's, from previously unpublished letters and journals, and from extensive close readings of all three writers, the author crafts a portrait of the evolution of a literary movement, of a wilderness ethic, and perhaps unintentionally, the devolution of Kerouac contrasted against the focus and dedication of Snyder and Whalen. The book is illustrated with photographs of the fire lookouts and their locales.
Gifted Photographer/Story Teller Explores Poets/Peaks.......2002-08-17
"Poets on the Peaks" by John Suiter is a beautiful and insightful book. The text and pictures hold your hand through wonderful reminiscing with and about some of the greatest poets of our time. The landscapes that inspired the poetry that Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen and Jack Kerouac are famous for is staged perfectly throughout the book. It gives you a sense of time and place that makes you feel as if you were in those look out towers and you experienced that electric and quiet time. Learn, escape, and love with this book. It is well worth it!

Book Description
As with most adventure modules, this one is packed with action...confrontation and combat. There is more, though. The players must think, as must their game personas. There is sufficient problem solving herein to suit most, even hardened veterans. The same is true for being "in character," and role-playing with proper dialog-comedic, dramatic, and the rest are all possible here. As for the other elements of the game form, well, only unless you, the Game Master, wish to work them in will they be found. The adventure doesn't include much in the way of extensive exploration, as you'll see, although there are many unique and wonderful places to visit. Business, intrigue, politics, and so forth are not likely given the setting, save for innovative addition to the work. As for story, other than the backstory that opens the adventure, that must await the conclusion of the action, can then be told as a tale of what occurred. This is for gaming, not stage presentation, after all. This adventure is suitable for a party of six d20 adventurers of 8th or greater level. If the party is to be given a free hand in deciding the order in which the panes are accessed then a few of the characters should be of the 9th or 10th level. With just a little work of the GM's part characters of 11th-14th level could adventure here-simply increase the number of monsters encountered, add extra levels to the NPCs, or place horrific guardian creatures here and there as pickets for the areas already detailed.

Hall of many panes (pains)........2007-06-30
Gary Gygax does a respectable job in an imaginative way to combine many small adventures into a very large campaign. We were able to get through some of the adventures in a single session, while some (pane 8 - Dungeon Delving) took several nights to complete. There's enough hack and slash, with problem solving throughout, to keep players involved. The presentation may be lacking, but a good GM needs only the basic story to keep the over 50 adventures moving along.
Interesting Idea, Horrible Execution.......2006-12-09
Maybe it's me. I remember a moment, far too many years ago, when I opened the magic box for the very first time, exulted in the worlds of fantasy it opened to me, and praised the name of Gygax. The Dungeons and Dragons game promised to transport me beyond my mundane, grammar school existence, and I was in awestruck rapture.
I suppose I was hoping to recapture some of that same magic with this boxed set, but--in the same way the new Star Wars movies fail to recapture that lens of childish innocence through which we watched the first three epics--Hall of Many Panes falls utterly short.
After running afoul of a being far too powerful to run afoul of (if you will pardon the dangling participle), the party finds itself transported to a tower. The tower is home to a long, spiraling ramp, two "safe" areas where they can rest and possibly interact with a handful of generally-benevolent fae, and numerous (indeed, many) panes of various shapes and colors. Each pane is the pathway to a new world--a world seemingly conjured up by the capricious force that trapped them in the tower.
It must have been a daunting task, coming up with fifty unique "worlds" capable of being described in 264 pages (less those required for introduction, finale, and the inevitable appendix of "crunchy bits")--and indeed, that may be the primary flaw of the set. It seeks to do too much, with too little space (a problem exasperated by the dual-statting of the game for d20 and Legendary Adventures); there are a few ideas that could be brilliant, but they are not given adequate space to be fully developed. At the other end of the spectrum, there are "worlds" which are simply unforgivably silly: it is a rare group of gamers that would appreciate having their characters turned into walking acorns. In between these extremes are a number of mazes, ambushes, and random encounters, some of which require the players to suddenly assume another persona (or shape, for that matter) with no knowledge of who or what they are supposed to be, or how to get out of the situation and back to the tower. If played as written, the party must endure a substantial number of these random worlds before they finally find the way home.
The boxed set is allegedly enhanved by a book of maps and illustrations. While the maps are marginally useful, the illustrations serve little purpose; they are a random collection of common images from a handful of the mini-worlds. While a GM could conceivably show them to his or her players to illustrate, say, a sleeping dragon, there are no truly useful sketches (e.g., an illustration of the layout of the tower, showing the way the panes hover and float in the air). One gets the impression this is simply a collection of interior art that got squeezed from the main books by excessive text.
All in all, the boxed set fails, by far, to live up to its promise of "a mega adventure in all its classic glory." Dragon Mountain this is not, and in the final analysis, nothing could save it.
Not even the name of Gygax.

Excellent Source of CSS Information.......2007-09-06
This book has proven to be an invaluable source of information for CSS and web design! I have used CSS over the past few years, and Rachel Andrew's is an excellent book that ties concepts together with pratical and well planned examples. I highly recommend this book to any individual wanting to see CSS in action.
Not bad.......2007-07-10
Not a bad book
Very text heavy though and operates best as a reference book than anything else. CD that comes with it is useful.
You can work through this book over a weekend and get a firm grasp on CSS fundamentals. Not inspiring though, just handy.
I hate coding but this made it easy!.......2007-06-05
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for writing this book RACHEL ANDREW!
After many frustrating attempts looking for a CSS book, this is the only book I've found that had me ENJOYING doing the code. I'm a designer at heart and I HATE coding. This book made it very easy for me to get my CSS web pages quickly up and running.
Every section presents a question and an answer on how to do the CSS. For example "How do I create tabbed navigation with CSS?" She would then present the HTML, an image of how the page should look, then the CSS, and briefly explain how it works.
This is great for beginners and intermediate learning. It's not so heavy on theory that you get lost, she makes it easy to learn. I wish all coding books were like this.
All in one book about you need to know on CSS.......2007-05-19
Excellent. Clear, practical and funny.

Customer Reviews:
Just What I Needed.......2007-02-27
I purchased this book out of desperation after using a 1000 page Javascript Wrox book published in 2000 that was worse than useless. The author's blog posting here is very accurate: it is a modern javascript book that gives usable solutions and concepts that work well. I recommend this book to anyone who has at least some programming background and is sick of cut and pasting garbage code from other mickey mouse tutorial sites that break at the slightest change. It is also a great start for working with AJAX, which is what I needed it for.
That said, the book is surprisingly a great read. I am reading this book cover to cover and also use it as an every day reference with dozens of tips. It is obvious the authors have worked extensively with web sites and write from experience. Thanks for a job well done!
Javascript 4 U.......2007-02-16
This is an excellent next-step up from an introduction to Javascript and looks at its use in real world situations. You will need to be reasonably fluent in the language to get the best out of it.
The book presents a topic as a question and then presents code to action that query as a solution, then goes through that code in a discussion section. This is where I have a relatively minor criticism of this book; the necessities of discussing the code do not always mesh well with the question and answer format of the layout.
The authors have gone to great effort to ensure that the book is as up-to-date as possible, though this is a rapidly moving target of course, and detail how to ensure that the code will run on as many platforms as possible, rarely giving up and saying 'forget it..', though this proved necessary in a number of the more esoteric options and older browsers.
A highly recommended read if you are looking for a quick solution, or a detailed understanding of what's going on.
The most useful JavaScript book on my shelf.......2007-02-06
I didn't really think I needed this book -- I have sever other JavaScript books, including the O'Reilly JavaScript Cookbook, and it seemed like this would just be a duplication. But I kept reading really positive reviews of this and other SitePoint books on sites that I trusted, so I decided to take a flier on it.
I'm really glad I did. Unlike some of the O'Reilly books, which are dated at this point, this has really up-to-date, professional code that incorporates best practices. Depending on what kind of JavaScript code base you need to integrate with, you may be able to use this code as-is in many instances. Even if you need to modify it for your own uses, you will never find poorly-organized hackwork here.
Also nice is the up-to-date topic selection. Classics like DOM, form validation, drop-down menus, and cookies are supplemented with topics about accessibility, XMLHttpRequest, in-page dialogs, and using class prototypes. When the authors tell you how to launch popups, they also tell you about all the pitfalls and problems.
No cookbook is going to cover ever possible topic (personally, I would have liked to see JSON examples), but this one is about as complete as you could reasonably ask for. Really, the only downside about this book that I can see is that you need to have at least an intermediate understanding of JavaScript to understand what's going on. There isn't a lot of handholding, and you will likely want to own both a good tutorial and a solid reference on JavaScript and spend some time with them before you're ready for this book. But if you have a good working knowledge of JavaScript and are looking for practical, well-written examples of how to incorporate new techniques into your code, you won't find a better book than this one.
Good and elegant book.......2007-01-24
It is a good book with useful tips and tricks.
the authors use an elegant way to catch the target.
For serious developers!.......2007-01-10
This book has chosen a different approach for teaching javascript to the readers. It first raises a question and then gives you the solution. What I like most about this book is that the solutions are very brief yet complete. It is obvious that the authors have years of work experience in web-development industry because they mention all the most popular problems that a developer might face while developing a website. (If they wanted to point all the tips and tricks, the book had to be named 10001 tips and tricks not 101 ... !!!).
I'm not quite sure if this book can be very handy for absolute beginners. I had a good(but not extremely good) understanding of javascript yet there were parts of this book that I struggled to understand. However, if you are serious about javascript, this book is the one you can't afford to miss!

If you're frustrated with trouble on the dating front, not to worry: even the professionals don't always get it right. That's one of the big lessons of Matchbook, an entertaining whirlwind glimpse of the life of a professional matchmaker (in particular, the one whose life is the basis for the LivingTV series "Miss Match"). Samantha Daniels mixes her career--setting up big-bucks clients with the aim of living happily ever after-- with her personal life--where she has her own dreams of a happy ending.
It's a fun, fast beach read that hides solid dating advice in slightly disguised real-life adventures of Daniels and her clients. Each receives a nom de guerre--Ms. Boobs, Brad Pitt Guy, Mr. Metrosexual and The Girl I Always Thought Hated Me are just a few of the bicoastal mix. Daniels realizes that matchmaking is more than just introductions; she recommends therapists, personal stylists, and nutritionists, and provides lessons in body language and dating etiquette. While none of it is necessarily phrased as advice to the reader, there's plenty to learn if you're trying to improve your own romantic life.
The upscale, urban setting is more like Sex and the City than real life for most of us--designer shoes, private cars and trendy restaurants are the rule, rather than the exception. Nevertheless, the background is a big part of the fun; being reminded that millionaires need love too is a fun break from the reality of blind dates and evenings alone. The ending chapter is a list of 101 dating tips, proving that Daniels knows her stuff. Whether she's urging "never give up on love", or "sometimes the more social you are, the more alone you feel", the combination of self-esteem pumping and pointed behavioral suggestions sneaks solid advice into the high-flying fun. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Fans of Sex and the City and Bridget Jones's Diary, and anyone who loves to date vicariously, will fall in love with Matchbook. In this irresistible read, America's hippest Matchmaker borrows from her real-life experiences to create an urban love story about searching for "The One."
When people learn what Samantha Daniels does for a living, they have to know more: How did she become a Match-maker? How many matches have led to marriage? How does it work? Who's her craziest client? And most of all, how can a Matchmaker be single?
Samantha Daniels is unlike any Matchmaker you've ever heard of. Young, ambitious, and, yes, single, she's the founder of Samantha's Table, an introduction service that caters to singles in New York and Los Angeles who are ready to invest seriously in the task of finding The One. After handpicking their matches, Daniels works with her clients as their cheerleader, part-time therapist, dating coach, voice of reason, and closest confidante as she helps them down the road to happily ever after.
Readers learn how Daniels started her Matchmaking business (How much do you charge for finding the love of someone's life? How do you screen out the Undatables?) and get to know the colorful cast of characters whom she fondly refers to as her "Desperados." There's Mr. Cheapskate, Miss Manhunt, and Looks Good from Afar Guy. There's the 39-year-old female corporate exec who wants a husband yesterday; there's the guy who will only date women worthy of Brad Pitt; there's the gazillionaire who offers a $60,000 bonus if Samantha can find him a supermodel wife; there's the very well endowed woman who's having trouble finding men attracted to her mind; and a host of others. Will Samantha be able to make them a match?
And more importantly, will this Matchmaker find herself a match? You would think that meeting hundreds of single men would make dating a snap, but not even a Matchmaker can avoid the pitfalls of single life. Readers are introduced to another lively cast of characters -- the men that Daniels herself dates. Readers meet the many Not for Me Guys and a few Maybe for Me Guys, to see that even a celebrated Matchmaker can be a Desperado herself.
Throughout the book, Daniels also offers real dating advice (such as the most common first-date mistakes and tried-and-true conversation topics) and secrets of the trade (why September is the best month for Matchmaking). Like a real-life episode of The Bachelor, Matchbook is a wild ride through the flirty, unpredictable world of urban dating, with a wise and witty guide at the helm. For those who love romance and anyone looking for love, Matchbook is a perfect match.

Me encanto - super lectura de vacaciones.......2007-08-04
Me encanto el libro. Es una lectura super para unas vacaciones, o para cualquier momento que uno quiera divertirse mucho. Se los recomiendo a todos.
Hilarious - Loved Devil Wears Prada -- this is Fun too .......2006-07-30
Fun story of a modern-day matchmaker in NYC -- somehow has some of the same strange humor of DEVIL WEARS PRADA and NANNY DIARIES except this is true story-- totally hilarious. Great gift for a pal who is recently single again -- or great reading after a bad date. Also fun for any married person who is itching to stray-- tells you why even a fair marriage is better than being on the meat rack. Thanks to the author for her sincere insider look-- she's a darling and witty and saucy and droll look at what men and women want in a mate!
Entertaining, but..........2006-03-20
Samantha Daniels's book is undoubtedly entertaining and a fast read; it also contains some useful if obvious advice, in the course of describing classic dating mistakes. But the author, in cavalierly declaring that men all require great looks and women all want lots of money, makes no allowances for the fact that her high-paying long-single clientele are liable to be more demanding than most on these points. Most of us in the real world are looking for a combination of moderate looks or security with someone who makes us feel comfortable and consistently loved. Also, I felt many times that this is not so much a book, as a book-length advertisement for both Samantha's dating service and for her own single self (in case any suitable bachelors are reading). It's ultimately quite annoying. I'd give it 2 1/2 stars if I could.
Consider passing this book over.......2006-02-28
I just couldn't get into this book. It definitely read like a blog. In all honesty, I thought the book was written with a teenage audience in mind. The writing was pretty elementary and wasn't nuanced at all. As a result, I found myself getting bored with the book rather quickly. The one thing I do like about the book is the fact that if you pay attention, the authors slips little dating suggestions into the narrative, from time-to-time, but these suggestions are fairly obvious to anyone who may possess an iota of tact, grace, savvy or manners.
On another note, this book totally depressed me about the state of dating in NYC. Every "character" in the book seems incredibly shallow. In the case of the males, they all seem to be looking for hot, trophy girlfriends/prospective wives and in the case of the women, they all appear to be looking for men with big bucks. I agree with one of the other reviewers... I live in NYC and haven't encountered people as shallow as the author paints her clientele out to be. It's no wonder that some of her clients are persistently single if they nit-pick over things like the borough where one of their matches were born, the fact that a match might be a "mere" two or three inches taller than them or that while a woman may have a fabulously successful career, is beautiful and interesting, she's just not "built" enough. So sad! What is this world coming to? And these are supposedly successful and bright people that the author is taking on as clients.
In short, if you feel like reading a fairly mindless, vapid book with a very two-dimensional view of single life in NYC, read this book. Otherwise, consider passing it up.
Real and Really Funny.......2006-01-30
Samantha is a brilliant, funny and insightful writer... shall I go on?
All of my girlfriends bought the book and read it. It is a great read, once you start you can not put it down. Anyone that has ever been single and it the nutty world of dating will relate to the stories!

Book Description
Written by a Romani (gypsy), this introduction to Roma life, health, food, culture, and society provides an insightful look at this despised by mysterious minority originating in India. Extensively illustrated, it looks at the people, their history since leaving India 1,000 years ago, and their rejection and exclusion from society in the countries where they settled. It offers candid advice on rejecting prejudices and stereotypes and getting to know the Roma as individuals, with short biographies of Roma in many different walks of life.
Customer Reviews:
Superb.......2006-10-07
This modest 180-page book offers a tremendous introduction to the Romani people, for any and all of Rom descent, as well as those who are simply sympathetic observers.
Published by the University of Hertfordshire in Britain, the book adds to the Interface Collection (published in 12 languages), developed by the Centre for Gypsy Research at Paris' Universite Rene Descartes, with support from other European organizations.
In addition to a brief introduction, the volume includes 14 chapters covering everything from the history of the Rom people and their 500-year enslavement in the heart of Europe to the bigoted reactions of Europeans, the Rom experience during the Holocaust and current-day anti-Rom hatred.
The book also discuses the Rom people's origins in the Indian subcontinent (from which they were transported as slaves by the Muslim conquerors), Rom cuisine and health practices, contributions of famed Roma (including guitarist Django Reinhardt, actress Rita Hayworth and actor Freddie Prinze) and the Rom language.
Also included are an impressive appendix, with a brief explanation of Romani grammar, a bibliography of recommended Internet, printed and organizational sources, a listing of the author's more than 150 references and a complete index.
One of the most useful and enlightening of the educational chapters is that on appropriate interactions with Romani people. It's well past time that scholars addressed the almost universally held (and highly unacceptable) attitudes towards the Rom, and provided remedies.
All in all, this is a superb book.

a good introduction to Gypsies 101.......2005-06-04
Likely Gypsies are one race that has been stereotype, maybe often without real thought. Such as the "stolen by the Gypsies..." I often heard that when I was growing up, but never stopped to see it for what it is - a perpetuating of a myth. Well, this book gives you a good start at shattering these pre-set images that are connected to the Gypsies. Written by a man of Gypsy blood, he set out to break these prejudices. He gears this book for schoolteachers, social workers, physicians or other walks of life that comes in contact daily with those of Gypsy origins, with eye to making you see them as the diverse people they are. He gives you a light introduction to Gypsy life and customs, challenges the narrow minds and misconceptions, replacing them with clear-cut, well written
information designed to enlighten and foster tolerance between the Romani and the gadze.
As one who adores my Scottish heritage, I have a great interest in the lore and ethnic heritage of different races. This book does a lot to answer questions and get you started on the road to leaning more about the Romani people.
Very interesting reading.
I recommend this to everyone.......2004-04-29
I just recently read this book, and I think it is very good, especially for those of non-Rom blood who would like some basic information. The author is himself Rom, so this is not written "about" Gypsies, but actually by one. I was very glad to see that, and was the reason that I picked it up in the first place. The book doesn't (and can't) go into very much detail about particular cultural practices, etc, and that was my only disappointment with it.
Hancock Is a Good Example that PhD's Do Not Matter.......2003-07-18
Anyway, I would like to tell you something else. I just received my papers. I hope you remember my and your comments about Hancock's "Romaivi." I will use Latin letters here for the sake of legibility. To refresh your memory, according to Hancock, the Byzantines called themselves "Romaivi" - which is absurd. The ancient Greek "Romaioi" (pronounced [ro'ma'yo'i], today [ro'me'i]) is the plural of Romaios ([ro'ma'yos], today [ro'me'os]) which means "a male Roman person" and comes from the Greek (or Hellenic, if you prefer) word for Rome - "Roma." The Byzantines called themselves Romans - that is, "Romaioi" and not "Romaivi." To distinguish between Romans and Byzantines, in Modern Greek the word "latinikos" (Latin) is broadly used to define "Roman" as an adjective. I am all too well aware of everything you commented about the origin of the word "Rumelia" and do not need to consult Dr. Erdinc or anyone about the matter. It indeed comes from those "Romaios" and "Roma" - not from "Romaivi" or any such nonsense of a word. The invented word "Romaivi" cited by Hancock, like the many other mistakes he makes in an attempt to show knowledge in everything, ruins his otherwise very informative and interesting book, thus (maybe undeservedly) casting a shadow of doubt on the other more "central" points that he makes. Therefore, I would suggest to you in good faith not to use this edition of his book or use it only with extreme caution. That is the point I wanted to make.
A must-have.......2003-04-05
This is a must-read book for anyone who is interested in not only the Romani people but also in the roles they have played in history. So much of their story is not known or not understood and this book deals with it in such an honest and straight forward way. It discusses and tackles the issues faced by the Romani people but does it in a way that doesn't point fingers or make excuses. Of the few books that actually deal with this topic, most of them are slanted to one side or the other. Hancock's book gives out the informattion for anyone who wants to read it. His personal insight is so helpful, as most of the other authors writing on this topic are non-Romani. This is such an important book, especially for someone interested in specific genres of history like the Holocaust or Middle Ages that it should definitely be on recommended reading lists. Of course you don't need to be a historian just to find this book insightful and interesting. I think everyone should read this book.

Customer Reviews:
Even a moron could raise sheep after reading this book!.......2007-10-04
In "Living with Sheep: Everything You Need to Know to Raise your Own Flock" the author covers exactly what the title implies, EVERYTHING you will need to know to raise sheep! Mr. Wooster writes in a very relaxed, and often humorous way. It's kind of like having coffee with a friend who's giving you pratical and essential instruction from 1st hand experience with sheep. Let me also say that the photo's in this book are excellent- bravo to Geoff Hansen!
Amongst topics covered by this book are: Sheep history, picking your sheep, things you should think about BEFORE you even get sheep, how to handle sheep, the various type of sheep breeds (meat, wool, dual-purpose and heirloom), land support, sheep shelter, fences, hay, how to properly feed your sheep, pasture rotation, raising lambs, organic lamb meat, butchering, wool production, rams and sheep health. This book also has a wonderful Appendix section in the back. Among the Appendix list is: Ewe gestation charts, tools & equipment you will need, summary month-by-month of a shepard's year, and a listing of state sheep sources and breed associations.
That being said Mr. Wooster really knows his sheep! I would invest in a hardback copy as here on Amazon it is cheaper than most retail paperback editions. The paper stock is thick, semi-glossy, flexible and will survive through repeated reading.
A solid 5 stars!
loved this book.......2007-06-05
This is a wonderful book for beginning shepherds (more experienced too). Very entertaining and informative.
What a great book.......2007-03-22
If you are a newcomer to living on a small farm and are looking for information on livestock to keep on your small acreage, this is a great book.
The author is very detailed yet understandable about every aspect of sheep raising and care.
It is also written for people from every angle. If you want to raise your own lambs and slaughter them or, like me, you don't want to use them for any other purpose other than as pets who keep the lawn down, this is just the book for you. The author covers everything you will need and makes you look forward to getting your first flock.
Really enjoyed it.
Great Photo's.......2007-01-23
I liked this book it has great glossy photos in it. Lots of storys and good advice. I would buy Storey's Raising Sheep book as a basic book but this one was a real nice read.
Fully fleeced in the NW.......2007-01-12
Geoff Hansen's guide to raising sheep is an honest and oftentimes humourous look at the joys and sometimes sorrows of raising and better yet "living" with our fleecey friends. I found the section dealing with lambing to be excellent, easy to follow and informative. I also like that Mr. Hansen takes the time and trouble to look at all aspects of living with sheep and not just his own preferences. I highly reccomend this book for anyone at any level of experience as it reads like you have a friend standing next to you offering sage advice and useful information in a language that all can relate to.
