This book misses the mark regarding a remarkable man........1998-12-29
John Templeton is a great man. A successful investor who gained, if not the whole world, a large part of it without losing his soul. His life story should hold valuable lessons for all of us. Yet this book, displaying the lack of perspective and questioning that offen occurs when a close friend and coworker attempts biography, paints an image of a rather robotic being with discipline and intelligence but lacking humanity.
Templeton is disciplined, focused and successful from his youth. But he buries his mother and wife in quick succession seemingly without letting those traumatic events interfere in any way with the business of business.
World War II, a defining moment for his generation, is little more than an investment opportunity for Sir John- no mention of having contributed to the war effort in any way. Was he exempt for physical or family reasons? Was he a contentious objector? Did he feel badly that others were fighting and dying while he went about building a fortune?
He leaves America for the Bahamas and becomes a British citizen. Why? He seems to have changed national allegiance with no more thought than most of us give to changing a shirt. No explanation is given, no soul searching is hinted.
In the end, this book fails to tell anything more about who John Templeton really is and the forces that shaped him than could have been gleaned from a newspaper interview. Even the chapter on Humility theology is so filled with references to "Sir John" that one wonders if the word has been given a new meaning!
Where is the humility?, where is the humanity?

Thank You Susie! from a Man!!.......2007-03-15
I do love this book! It's so far removed from the glossy, polished, airbrushed world so many perceive as the norm for Lesbians, all their (mis) information having come from the fantasy world of pornography, a world run by mostly male or compliant, obedient, submissive women. Real lesbians are more likely to have hairy underarms and vaginas, have their own behaviours and love rituals, possibly even involving hurting each other and the subsequent compassion of that shared pain and they mostly don't live in the Penthouses and Billion dollar properties that high gloss image creators can afford to hire for a day's photo-shoot.
Real lesbians are often overweight by comparison (as are most of the straight peers to the glamour/fantasy industry's girls), living real and normal lives in real and normal places and suffering the same real and normal emotional harrowings the rest of us do on life's path.
I enjoy the casual candour of this book, so accepting of everything from some pretty `out there' behaviours to the same casual acceptance of the possibility of lesbians wanting sex with a man now and then (often a demonized lust in the `scene' circles where we men are sometimes more perceived as `the enemy' by the militant).
I don't care what your `thing' is, gay, straight, outrageously kinky, bizarre or whatever. What I will always applaud is open acceptance of anyone's behaviour that doesn't interfere with any other's right to the same (and that protects the aged, the children and the infirm-the responsibility of all of us who are blessed not to be in the vulnerable categories). The other thing I love about this book is it so readily acknowledges the power and force of female sex drive-That connection to the sacred when in it's purest form there is no taboo-Where it can be Blood, saliva, vaginal fluid, menstrual discharge, where all is felt, expressed and experienced with abandon and total absorption in the fragility and momentary nature of our humanity and the indestructibility and eternity of our spirituality. For all the books about sexuality and `guides' by people who write like it's a manual and provide pictures that are so sterile and unemotional they could make a red blooded bloke contemplate celibacy, it's almost a pity that the heights and power provided by abandon and surrender is found in a gay womens' manuscript, but who cares? At least someone is acknowledging it and maybe it's some compensation for Lesbians having to deal with being a marginalized minority most of the time. (Access to `the secret'?!!)
Cheers
Lloyd
Larger than life compilation.......2006-09-13
This is an amazing collection. Explicit photos and top of the line production quality.
I enjoyed how the chapters and photographs were presented. The introductions do a great job explaining to the reader what they are about to see and they should not be skipped. The first four sections (labeled Dyke, C*unt, Butch and Sex) carry a huge spectrum of images from the lovely to the not so lovely, from the sensual to the outrageous. I can't imagine the editors believe all the images would appeal to all the readers so I chose to enjoy what I found appealing, study those I didn't and move on.
I initially bought the book as it has a wealth of material by the artist Tee A. Corinne and devotes 8 pages to her and another 5 of her images are carried in other sections. The other major artists profiled are Honey Lee Cottrell, Della Grace, Morgan Gwenwald and Jil Posener.
I especially enjoyed the sidebar that accompanied many of the pages `Behind the Camera: Interviews with the Artists'. The candid replies by the artists made for exceptional reading. The topics:
Family
Coming out
Feminist politics
Camera
S/M
School days
Lesbian porn
First picture, first camera
Shooting sex
Cruising
Femme
Money and fame
First dirty picture
Censorship
Lesbian erotica
The art world
Provactive, Challenging, and Honest.......1998-07-12
A provactive look at real lesbian sexual life at the edge. Some of the photographs are artistically brilliant, some are fascinating, and some may be repellent, but all have an honesty and intensity which is refreshing and unusual. As a photographer, I highly recommend it. Some of the images are quite graphic and powerful.

i moved this review from the rage across russia, single book.......2006-09-30
a great book...dark with the overwhelming feeling of doom.,
i can't believe no one ever reviewed this book i owned it years ago, in the 90's and from the moment i picked it up i could not put it down. RAR was hands down the best source book i ever read for werewolf (apocalypse)
the entire book made you feel as if amragedon was months away and that it was unavoidable.
it really made a lot of comparisons to how americans veiwed soviet russia during the cold war, with how the garou outside of russia veiwed those stuck (trapped)behind the iron shadow (nod to the iron curtain) it was by far the darkest themed book werewolf had,
and if you ever read the Silver Crown, this book gave an all new depth to the character Arkady, and what he had to do to escape Baba Yaga's reach.
i think the new forsakken series (or new WOD in general) could probally have something similar to this story arch, given the actions Vladimir Putin has taken to consolidate the kremlin's power (as of september 2006)
or better yet they could give a peak into the world of Kim Jong-il and the DPRK (north korea)
so all the above stills applies from my other review only with this package you get an extra book, caerns places of power, in of itself a great resource....
Great BYE.......2000-04-10
This is a great buy especialy for a ST just getting into W:TA. For it contains two sorce books that are out of print. This book help flesh out chronicals that span more then just one area of the world.

Digg deep into the application.......2007-01-19
This book is great for beginners and people who have been using InDesign for years. Very detailed from start to finish. If you are working on a project and don't know how to do something it is very easy to find answers in this book.
Learning what the software can do.......2007-01-09
This book is in detail for what Indesign software is made up to do. Easy to understand and to learn. Easy reading.
The Best!.......2005-09-03
This is the best InDesign book out! Sandee knows this program inside and out! She explains it clearly, quick and concise! I recommend this to every desinger I know. I have a copy at work, and keep a copy for home use too!
Thanks Sandee for sharing your wisdom!
Inexpensive, comprehensive, and easy to navigate and reference, .......2005-08-12
I've only bought a few computer manuals in my life [and never ended doing much with them but setting them on a shelf] before this, so perhaps I am not the best person to review one. Furthermore, I have never used a desktop publisher program of any kind (beyond WORD) before picking this book up - so I am about as clueless going into this as I can be. But, I had to learn In Design (along with Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat) fast. A design instructor recommended this book.
With just a little time, reading, and playing with direction - I feel like I can use In Design to do my publishing tasks. And that is saying a lot for a computer dummy like me.
There were personal forwards to the chapters that made the chapters easy to understand and that relate the software to technical/design concepts that even someone with no art and little design background can catch onto.
This books works well as a walk-through tortorial AND as a comprehensive reference book. But, unlike a $200 tutorial, this $20 book still has more to answer your questions and easy tables and listings to reference when you've walked yourself through the program.
I actually ENJOYED reading through this manual and playing with In Design- because it feels personal and interactive - without being condescending. And I felt like I was actaully moving along as I progressed through the book.
I have heard that this book may not be quite comprehensive enough for a professional designer who uses the full Adobe Creatve Suite to do professional ad and design work on a daily basis- and who is already comfortale and confident with the program. If that's you - go ahead and look into a $150+ set of manuals. But, if you are the average, even professional, individual who is looking to become familiar with In Design and its uses - then this book is very reasonably priced, easy to read and navigate, easy to reference, and -have to repeat - reasonably priced.
Organized for Users.......2005-07-28
With several InDesign texts close at hand, this is the one I find myself reaching for first. Cohen has an approachable style and the material is logically organized. The linkage of virtually every section of text to one or more illustrations gives the reader "two kicks at every can." Her VQG for CS2 InDesign will be my first purchase after upgrading.
Book Description
Renowned as the creator of the detective story and a master of horror, the author of "The Red Mask of Death," "The Black Cat," and "The Murders of the Rue Morgue," Edgar Allan Poe seems to have derived his success from suffering and to have suffered from his success. "The Raven" and "The Tell-Tale Heart" have been read as signs of his personal obsessions, and "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Descent into the Maelstrom" as symptoms of his own mental collapse. Biographers have seldom resisted the opportunities to confuse the pathologies in the stories with the events in Poe's life. Against this tide of fancy, guesses, and amateur psychologizing, Arthur Hobson Quinn's biography devotes itself meticulously to facts. Based on exhaustive research in the Poe family archive, Quinn extracts the life from the legend, and describes how they both were distorted by prior biographies.

I worship at the altar of Poe........2006-08-22
As a lifelong fan of Edgar Allan Poe, I admit that I worship at the altar of Poe. Therefore it was a delight to discover this most excellent bio, extensively researched by another worshipful fan (from an earlier era) of American's greatest short story writer. This is a must for your reference library. I read and absorbed every single page. I'm grateful that the author followed his own lifelong passion for Poe and went against the grain of Poe bashing biographers of his time, and produced this work that extols Poe's positive character features while not neglecting the negatives. Compare this bio with other "negative" Poe bios of the past (esp. early 20th century), still available in libraries, and you'll understand why it was such a pleasure for me to find this particular book which provides a more balanced picture of the artist's life and career.
Edgar Poe died for your sins........2006-08-11
if you agree alot with the title you would love this book. Before copyright laws and respectability for writers, authors unless they were connected with money would literally peddle their offerings like a door to door magazine subscription salesperson. So the story of Poe goes. Needless to say the hardships attendant on such a life. there are alot of primary sources here in fact a goldmine for readers unwilling to take anyones suspect interpretations. The rev. griswold letters are here exposed in all their distortions with a column showing what Poe actually wrote and then as Griswold reprinted them adding his own "spin". If education without religion creates clever devils then education with religion can at times create even cleverer devils as proved by the Reverend Griswold. An excellent biography, you might even run the Poe category (or potent potables) on Jeopardy and make the first payment on that student loan---NAAAA!!.You just choked and for Rev. Griswold you answered Gus Griisom(the astronaut)!! Alex sent you packing and that what you get for treating Poe as trivia. This book right up there with the Silverman bio.
An Exhausting Accumulation Of Often Superfluous Facts.......2006-06-13
First published in 1941, Arthur Hobson Quinn's critically acclaimed Edgar Allan Poe: A Critical Biography is a dry, strictly academic work which presents its readership with over 700 dense pages containing thousands of thoroughly researched 'hard' facts concerning the life of one of America's greatest literary figures, but which completely neglects to create a vibrant, three-dimensional, shadow-casting portrait of the writer himself.
Throughout the volume, its human subject remains little more than a blank, three-letter sieve endlessly referred to as "Poe": "Poe lived up to his standard...", "Poe signalized his departure from the editorial staff of...", "Poe wrote the critical notices for October and November...", "Poe did not lecture, however....", "Poe was still hearing echoes of his visits to Mrs. Whitman's home..."
The problem, of course, is that, despite the avalanche of facts, many of which are utterly superfluous, the reader comes no closer to gaining an understanding of the man behind them. "Who was Edgar Allan Poe?" is a fundamental question the text never comes close to providing a genuine answer to.
As Quinn's evaluation of Poe's prose and poetry is routinely perfunctory and unexceptional, Edgar Allan Poe: A Critical Biography is a work that few readers, with the exception of committed Poe scholars, are likely to find worthwhile or engrossing.
A perfect narration of Poe's Life........2000-12-30
This is the best biography about Edgar Allan Poe I have ever seen. Meticulous and clear, Arthur H. Quinn take us to the real world that E.A.POE lived and show us with facts that Poe was more than a writer, a Genius.

longer version is better.......2007-05-15
this is a the 2nd half of the set and it's better to get this larger version than the little books. These books are full of pics and descriptions. There's a spin .. a little towards the left.. but like most of these types of humanity type courses you're going to get that anyway.

Order it now, you won't be sorry!.......2006-12-07
One of the hardest things a beginner faces when jumping into amateur astronomy is "Where do I start?". That question has been answered in great depth by this book. Considered by almost everyone to be "the bible" of amateur telescope making, if this book doesn't inspire you to start cutting wood, then you need to find yourself another hobby!
One of the authors is responsible for the "Obsession" line of high-end Dobsonian telescopes. This book is almost a step-by-step guide on how you can build your own large Dobsonian, with optics and performance nearly as good as an Obsession. Yes, you probably won't save much money over a purchased 'scope, but the pride of being able to say "I built this myself!" more than makes up for that. Plus, you will know (and understand) every single square inch of your telescope, so modifications and changes won't be as frightening to you as they would if you had to cut into a $3000 commercial telescope.
If you think you're going to use this book and build an 18" 'scope for $500, you're going to be in for quite a shock. The authors in this book both stress the importance of premium optics, and these do not come cheap. Expect to spend roughly $1500, or more, for a good quality 12.5" primary mirror alone. Quality doesn't come cheap, and with the only commercial Pyrex production line in the US shut down for the next several years, expect mirror prices to rise, drastically.
For those who can afford it, a scope like this can last for a lifetime. But if you can't afford such a huge investment, this book also covers construction of an 8", closed-tube Dobsonian (The larger sizes in the book are all truss tube models), which can be assembled for roughly $600.
Right now, several of my friends and I are starting to plan our dream scope, using nothing but this book as a reference guide. We're going to build slowly, completing one major piece at a time. This both insures that the finished unit is as high a quality as we are capable of producing, plus helps to defer construction costs over a longer period of time.
Even if you have no intention of every getting a Dobsonian, you will find many things of value in this book.
Why are you still reading this? Go and order a copy for yourself. Experience firsthand just how well written and useful it really is, and I'll bet you also start dreaming of cutting wood and aligning optics.
The Bible on Building Dobsonians !.......2006-05-02
If you are interested in building a Dobsonian with professional results, this is the book for you. It even excercises pragmmatic guidance on what aperture should one choose by describing a series of scenarios one would not contemplate before building, but would clearly regret in the after. This is specially useful for those suffering from "aperture fever".
The author wisely leaves aside the craft of making your own optics. He reduces it to one chapter. The reason: if you you want to build a serious and large aperture telescope; buy the optics. This, with time and experience, comes as the best option.
Nothing is left aside on what building a Dobsonian may concern. I honestly didn't look for anything else after this book. (The only thing I surfed the internet for was for more images on Dob designs).
This is a rare book, for it accomplishes to fill virtually every doubt you may have on the subject.

The Best!.......2003-02-10
This book is the most helpful resource (including the internet!) I had when planning and building my truss tube 10" dobsonian. I loved it! For anyone thinking of building a telescope that is large in aperature and small to store, this book is for you!
Helped me build my 12-inch portable Dob.......2001-06-19
I used this book The book was incredibly helpful. Though, because of the constraints of a travelscope, many concepts had to be modified. The index listing sources of strange materials was very useful and I even had a few emails to Dave Kriege who responded right away with great advice.
